Starting off, we have split in Teams to Survey the historic center of Meda and document the characteristics of each building that is part of the dedicated survey area. Concluding from the survey, we came to identify the most important elements making up facades and architectural characteristics of the town. Some of these will become design driving elementsintheprojectlateron.

Consequently, a diachronic map has been put together, documenting the changes of the built fabric in the old town core and the survey area, as well as the later chosen Lacuna site, over time.

Furtherly, Analysis Plans have been made to further investigate on building heights, roof-types, green areas, functions and building ages in Meda.

Although the condition is not good and there is a lot of decay visible (mostly ground level facade), this building is entirely coherent with the urban fabric and architectural requirements of the historic part of Meda.

The urban center is incoherent with the city fabric and also concerning all architectural elements in the old town core. However, its positioning and function seem to have become a valuable contribution to the city of Meda.

CASA DI RINGHIERA

In the city of Meda and especially on our chosen site - Lacuna, we quickly came to acknowledge that the “case di ringhiera” are an important part of medas residential building history and have been shaping building courtyards.

Literally translated “guard rail houses”, casa die ringhiera are characterized by several flats sharing the same open gallery on each floor. The galleries in most cases run the whole length of the building and provide access to individual housing units that face the inner courtyards. Toilets where shared by each floor with a facility present at the end of each gallery.

Historically also the groundfloor functions have been shared spaces, such as laundry rooms, storages and workshops for the inhabitants.

FURNITURE DESIGN IN MEDA

The former agriculturally dominated city of meda has seen a population growth during the industrialization as well as a shit from the agricultural sector towards a more specialized industry: furniture disign and woodworking. Former peasents becalme artisans of furniture. With economic growth picking up, meda became the center of furniture design and production in Italy. Today, some of the smaller workshops have been abandonned. However, with furniture producers such as Cassina and Minotti having their Headquaters based in Meda, furniture Design remains significant for Meda and puts the city on the Map of furniture industry in Europe.

There is a lot of older people in the area, not helping to bring new residents to the area.

Buildings with historical value are being abandonded and risk being demolished.

There is a lack of economic growth and the pandemic did not help to attract new people to the area.

4. Lack of connectivity

The poor conectivity to other towns in public transport make reaching meda hard and loose more poeple.

For the second Step we have decided to work on the Lacuna Site close to the historic piazza in the very center of Meda. As information and access to the site was very limited, historic fotographs and plans, as well as drone footage has been used to carefully reconstruct the “status quo” plans of the buildings on site.

In addition, we have documented the current relationship between the site and the historic core using the urban section as well as the urban axonometry to further illustrate the current situation.

To better understand the site, in addition to the architectural sections, the material sections transfer more information of the material used on the facades. These have been further investigated in the prexservation section of the Studio.

The status quo plans are the starting point for our design process on the Lacuna site and should be regarded as the “before intervention” situation.
