“With the flowery crowned spring / Now the vernal rose we sing; Sons of mirth, your sprightly lays / Mix with ours, to sound its praise: Rose, the gods' and men's sweet flower; / Rose, the Graces' paramour: This of Muses the delight, / This is Venus' favourite...” The e-bulletin presents articles as well as selections of books, albums, photographs and documents as they have been handed down to the actual owners by their creators and by amateurs from past generations. The physical descriptions, attributions, origins, and printing dates of the books and photographs have been carefully ascertained by collation and through close analysis of comparable works. (Charles-Marie-René Leconte de Lisle (1818 - 1894), "La Rose", from Poèmes antiques, in Odes anacréontiques, no. 9, published 1852)

I shall speak of the Rose with its graceful folds. The Rose is the embalmed breath of the Gods, the dearest care of the divine Muses! I shall speak of its glories, o delight of my eyes, O flower of Kypris, queen of the hills! You bloom between the lovely fingers of the dawn dispelling the sombre shadows; The azure air becomes rosy and tints the woods, The lips and breast of virgins are rose-blushed! Happy the virgin with rounded arms that in the humid thickets gathered you Happy the young face that you adorn! Happy the cup where your petals float! Carried along on the primeval flow, When from the sea Aphrodite emerged Glistening naked under the clear blue sky, The jealous earth gave birth to the Rose; And the whole of Olympus, transported by love, Saluted the flower as the Queen of Beauty! (Translation from French to English by Douglas Watt-Carter, 2003)

Bertram Charles Percival Park (1883-1972) Bertram Park was a portrait photographer whose work included British and European royalty. His photographs were widely used on British postage stamps, currency, and other official documents in the 1930s, and the source for two paintings by Walter Sickert. For example, Park provided the photograph of George VI on which the 4d Southern Rhodesian stamp was based. In 1910, Bertram Park was one of the founders of the London Salon of Photography. In 1916, Park married the photographer Yvonne Gregory (1889-1970) at Hampstead and she became one of his principal models. They produced together a number of photographic books of the female nude. In 1919, with funding from the Egytologist Lord Carnarvon, he established studios at 43 Dover Street, London, with Yvonne and photographer Marcus Adams. They shared darkroom staff and facilities and were known as the "Three Photographers". Park exhibited as part of the European avant-garde movement in the Premier Salon International de Nu Photographique which took place in Paris in 1933 in the company of Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy, and others. Police career. Outside photography, Park was a Commandant in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary and was noted as such in 1927 and 1939. He was an expert in the cultivation of the rose and the editor of The Rose Annual. In 1957, a review in the American Institute of Biological Sciences described his Guide to Roses, for which he also provided the photographs, as "the last word on roses".

Peut-on dire que la Rrose est la plus bellle des fleurrs ?
