Welcome to S&ERFC The warmest of welcomes from SERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league. The 2026-27 season brings new fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met (at least in League Rugby) at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane. During the extraordinary summer of 2026, the Club has busied itself in te never-ending business of development and refurbishment. Amongst the improvements to the infrastructure are the new easy access facilities which have been financed by means of an appeal which was generously responded to by numerous members. Although the primary purpose of the appeal was to better enable our visually impaired sportsmen to navigate the contours of the Club, others of us are also grateful for having fewer steps to negotiate en route from the Clubhouse to the pitch! On the topic of generosity, no club of our size and status could survive in the modern age without the support of sponsors. Each of our sponsors is represented by an advertisement in this programme. Foremost amongst them is our headline sponsor: MB Associates, the company whose Managing Director is the redoubtable Monica Bradley. The Club is very grateful to all its sponsors for their continuing support – and I take the opportunity to remind all members that sponsorship is a two-way street: the more business Club members give to our sponsors (often on advantageous terms), the more that entrenches the relationship between the sponsors and the Club – to the advantage of both. Not only has the Club’s infrastructure undergone improvements over the summer break, so, too, recruitment has been positive in all sections of the Club. The women’s section played last year in the dizzying heights of Women’s Championship South 1, following their promotion the season before. Unfortunately, the ever-increasing skills and fitness levels in the women’s game proved too much for our women to match – but they have learned a great deal from being exposed to such a level. They will be back. Despite the vagaries of the last season, the men’s section have a highly experienced, skilled, and motivated coaching-team under the guidance of Paul Hodgson who combines the experience of being an ex-England international with a family background that makes him a SERFC man ‘through and through’. The first XV compete in what is generally recognised as the most competitive league in level 6 – and the quality of the games they play is of a seriously high level. The Minis and Youth section continues to delight us all – what a fantastic contribution to the rugby community they make! We are also delighted to welcome our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all. So, welcome once again. Let season 2026-27 be a season to remember at SERFC – for all the right reasons! John Hardy President @SuttonEpsomRFC Programme design: Haime & Butler. Editorial and statistics: Paul Beken & John Croysdill.

Headline sponsor’s message
We are again delighted to be supporting S&ERFC in our tenth year as the headline sponsor. Our ongoing partnership with the club is a constant source of pride, both for myself and my team. To be a part of something that is such a cornerstone of the local community and is so inclusive, on so many different levels, is indeed a real privilege. As a business based in Cheam Village which has traded in Surrey for nearly twentyfive years, we share many of S&ERFC’s values. Therefore, it’s a great pleasure to be involved again this year, both from a sponsorship perspective but also with members of our staff yet again playing for some of the senior teams. Wishing everyone at the club all the best for the 2026-27 season, and of course enjoying some outstanding rugby in the coming months! Monica Bradley Managing Director MB Associates

Sutton through the Ages The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing. And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England. The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers. By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season. Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years. We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”
Founded in 1855, Epsom College is one of the country’s leading independent co-educational day and boarding schools for 11-18 year olds.

The League Round Up Week 2: Saturday 3rd October Beckenham 50 Brighton 17 Beckenham stayed on top of the table with a second bonus point win, a second half-century of points and for the second week on the spin the largest winning margin in the league. In a six-try canter Tom Ward collected a brace for the early season leaders. Dartfordians 17 Bromley 35 Bromley won on the road to maintain their unbeaten start. In contrast, Dartfordians are still in search of their first point of the season. Gravesend 24 Hammersmith & Fulham 21 The hosts commemorated former Chairman and President Graham Haggar in the best possible style with a win. Tries from Josh McKenzie, Josh Barnes, Stan Dadson and Les Falefatu earned Gravesend a 5-point win. Hammersmith & Fulham, as in Round 1, rallied late in the game with tries from the ‘Dans’, Perry & Whitaker, for a bonus point but no win to celebrate Tim Russell’s 100th appearance. Horsham 59 Cobham 31 The Coolhurst crowd feasted on a 9-try display by a rampant Horsham. Half-backs, Morgan James (9) and Joe Wilde (10), both scored a brace whilst the latter added seven conversions for a 24-point day. Cobham had the consolation of collecting their first point of the season in what has become a harsh awakening at Level 6. However, five tries from Murphy, Springett, Joyce, Fielding and a penalty will give the newcomers much encouragement. Old Elthamians 12 Medway 42 These two clubs were separated by two levels last season. The upwardly mobile Elthamians had enjoyed three seasons of unbridled success. For the first time in ages their supporters at the QMU Ground had to bear witness to a thrashing as Max Bullock with a hat trick and John Sipawa with a brace starred in Medway’s 6-goal procession. Week 3: Saturday 10th October Beckenham 26 Old Elthamians 20 The Balmoral Avenue Boys stayed on top but were taken all the way by a young, fit and mobile Old Elthamians who sank to the bottom. The Old Boys will hope that their lowly status is just an anomaly and a reflection of the quirks and fates of the fixture list having also encountered Brighton and Medway. Brighton 28 Gravesend 38 George Bruce opened the scoring for the visitors with a goal before the hosts levelled the scores. Gravesend finished the first period 21-14 with further goals from Stan Dadson and Josh Barnes. Despite Dadson adding to his tally Brighton stubbornly drew level at 28 apiece. It took a penalty and a goal from Rhys Betts to finally subdue the Blues.
Bromley 32 Hammersmith & Fulham 31 Unbeaten but fourth in the league having dropped one bonus point is a most satisfying start for Bromley. In contrast H&F are rapidly getting the reputation as the nearly men with losses by two, three and, this time, by a sorry solitary point and a last play drop kick. Cobham 38 Battersea Ironsides 28 Harty, on debut, opened the scoring for Cobham before McQuade (2), Harker & Incledon made it 31-0. Saywell added a sixth to go with his four conversions for a 13-point afternoon. A spirited Battersea rallied late on but their consolation scores were not enough to gain a bonus point as the hosts recorded their first win of the season at the third time of asking. Dartfordians 34 Horsham 34 Horsham were the draw specialists last season with two and have secured their first for this campaign. Though the score was perhaps not so surprising as last season it was 38-45 in the corresponding fixture. Week 4: Saturday 17th October Battersea Ironsides 35 Gravesend 27 This was the shock result of Week 4 as winless Ironsides overcame unbeaten Gravesend. After Josh Barnes opened the scoring for the visitors Battersea hit back with four unanswered tries to lead 28-7 at the break. Despite the efforts of evergreen Samraj Chahal with a brace of tries the Kent side could not overhaul the hosts. Brighton 69 Dartfordians 12 The Blues certainly enjoy playing Dartfordians having won the last four encounters and scored 47, 52, 32 and 68 points in the process. The result was hardly a surprise but the margin of the slaughter will be a concern for the visitors as much as a surprise for Brighton’s neighbours. Cobham 27 Old Elthamians 11 Centre Henry Lunn celebrated his first start for Cobham with the opening try. The OEs hit back with two goals to lead at the break. The hosts rallied superbly with a trio of tries from Taylor Burnett, Will Springett and Jordan Bond. A late score by Elthamians Xavier Turner meant a tense finish but the home team hung on for victory. Hammersmith & Fulham 39 Horsham 36 At last Hammersmith & Fulham were favoured with a victory in a close finish. Unusually there is no report from the H&F correspondent. I do hope the high anxiety of their close results has not been injurious to his health. More optimistically one might ponder his celebrations were so flamboyant he lost all his notes in some random hostelry. Hearty congratulations to the Hurlingham Park men who were at last favoured by the rugby Gods. Medway 13 Beckenham 29 The turning point in this match came late in the first period when a clash of heads saw Medway receive a red card. Beckenham led by 7-3 at the break but with the numerical advantage, indeed Medway played for a while with 13, the hosts never posed a serious threat in the second half.
The League Round Up Week 5: Saturday 24th October Beckenham 10 Cobham 28 Perhaps the stand out performance of the season so far saw newly promoted Cobham inflict the first defeat of the campaign on leaders Beckenham in their Balmoral Avenue backyard. The new boys are now taking to Level 6 like a mallard to H2O. Dartfordians 7 Medway 22 Rather more predictably Medway took advantage of Beckenham’s slip by overcoming the basement boys from Dartfordians. However, after the shellacking the hosts received the previous week at Brighton the margin of defeat offered a modicum of encouragement. Brighton 31 Bromley 10 No team was as affected as much as Bromley by the congestion at the top of the league. The Kent side’s defeat to the Blues saw them slide from 4th to 8th in the Table. For the freescoring hosts it was another comfortable bonus point win as they now have the most points scored this season. Horsham 19 Battersea Ironsides 18 This afternoon’s opponent came through the round’s tightest match. The Ironsides recorded another bonus point but the solitary point dividing the sides in the favour of the hosts was enough to delight the Coolhurst crowd. Old Elthamians 32 Hammersmith & Fulham 22 Last season two levels separated these two teams. However, in 2026-27 the glory went to the elevated Old Boys at the expense of the demoted H&F. It was cause for celebration at the Queen Mary’s ground as it was also OEs first victory of the campaign.

The Horsham Connection Horsham RFC was founded in 1928 at the Station Hotel by A.G.S Hodgson, Bainbridge Copnall and A.G. Puttock. From their original Warnham Park home they have established a new home at Coolhurst since 1972. For a club fast approaching their centenary season they can boast a magnificently modern facility providing a splendid match day experience for players and spectators alike. Last season was the first time Sutton & Epsom had played the Sussex club in the league and Horsham took the honours with two fine wins. Though they did not bounce back to Level 5 at the first attempt they enjoyed a strong campaign. Their bogey side proved to be Gravesend. The Kent side drew at the Coolhurst ground on the opening day of the season and then won the last game of the regular season. That defeat meant that, as fate would have it, Round 22 was repeated as the first of the play-off fixtures and the Rectory Field proved to be an unhappy hunting ground once again. This season Horsham has had mixed success with wins over Battersea Ironsides and Cobham and a draw with Dartfordians tempered by losses against Hammersmith & Fulham and Medway. Last Time at Rugby Lane (22nd November 2025) Sutton & Epsom 29 Horsham 36 A try by Captain Bunting opened the scoring for Sutton before Horsham hit back with two tries in the opening quarter. Prop Luke Standing and prolific centre Tom Whittaker gave the Sussex men a 14-5 lead. S&E countered with hooker Sam Lennie crossing the whitewash for the first time in the afternoon. However, straight from the restart hirsute Horsham prop Jack Osgood made it 2110 to the visitors with what was the last score of the first period. A yellow card for Kyren Ghumra for a deliberate knock on in the opening moments of the second half impaired the Black & Whites’ hopes of recovery. Replacement prop Josh Earle completed a hat trick of tries for the unsung heroes of the front row who had spread the spoils magnanimously as Horsham lead 26-10. Sutton had a flicker of optimism as Sam Lennie gathered his second. This was undermined as the visiting 10 Joe Blake charged down an attempted clearance and scored under the posts for 33-15. There was time for Sam Lennie’s hat trick and a Ghumra try in time added on to create a dramatic finish. Horsham hung on for as deserved 36-29 win. Sam Lennie became the second front row forward after Gary Nash to score a league hat trick and the fifth player to collect a treble in a losing league cause. The others with muted post-match celebrations were Ollie BaptisteWilson, Will East, Kyren Ghumra and Rob Hegarty. Sutton & Epsom O’Brien, Fitzgerald, Bibby, Bunting ©, Ghumra, Lennard, Wise, Johnson, Lennie, Mount, McTaggart, Duey, Rea, Tame, & Hegarty. Reps: Boaden, Finney & Munford. Horsham Warwick, Sanders, Whittaker, Johnson, Nwachukwu, Blake Linfield, Standing, Kilfeather, Osgood, Denhart, Howard, Thompson, Paku & Smith. Reps: Earle, Murphy & Grogan.

CALLING ALL S&ERFC MEMBERS DO YOU PLAY GOLF? The Magpies are Sutton & Epsom RFC’s very own Golfing Society and all club members automatically qualify as members. You don’t need any particular high level of golfing skill although a sense of humour and ability to ‘lunch’ well will help! Come and join players, past and present, and enjoy your fantastically entertaining Golf Society – a warm welcome is assured. We have four meetings a year including the legendary Christmas meeting and Captain’s Away Day.

Sponsorship We are always looking for new business partners with whom we can build relationships for long-term mutual benefit. In return, we can offer our sponsors a range of benefits, including opportunities to promote their business and their products, to generate direct sales via club membership and to entertain their clients, both at the club and at Twickenham. We have a range of packages available to suit all budgets and objectives. For an initial discussion, without obligation, please contact:
