hHello Everyone,
Happy November! I trust that you have all settled into the school year, tucked those Halloween costumes away, and are looking ahead to the holiday season. For me, the fall is always an exciting time of year. Growing up in Canada and living in New England, I love experiencing the change of season. Perhaps cliché, but watching the leaves transform the landscape is a magical moment that I look forward to every year.
This month, our U.S. destination is Ohio, where we explore a world of learning opportunities across the state, from the storied halls of its museums to the sweeping shores of Lake Erie. In Canada, we take you to the capital, Ottawa, a city that blends old-world charm with modern vibrancy, along with gorgeous nature and rich Indigenous culture. And venturing across the pond, France beckons with iconic landmarks and hidden gems alike, offering unforgettable sights, deep history and, of course, delicious cuisine.
We’re also excited to talk with two of our inaugural Traveling Teacher of the Year finalists—each sharing their immense passion and years of experience that they bring to student travel. Their insights are sure to inspire you as you plan your next adventure.
Beyond destinations, we’re covering some important logistical topics for educators, like what to consider when planning international student trips and how to handle illness while on the road. We also get into the future of travel planning with an initial look at how “AI” can be integrated into your itinerary building and trip management. We’re really just dipping our toes into the possibilities (along with the accompanying challenges) there.
Finally, this issue has our annual Educators Buyers Guide. This comprehensive directory of SYTA membership is your go-to resource for trusted travel partners, making it easier than ever to plan your next trip with confidence.
I am excited for you to dig into this issue as it is packed with awesome content that touches on favorite destinations of mine. I wish you all a successful holiday season and look forward to reconnecting in the new year! STRATEGIC PARTNERS
SYTA AND BONARD RELEASE 2023 STUDENT TRAVEL BUSINESS BAROMETER
SYTA and our research partner, BONARD, have been actively engaged in monitoring the global student group travel market since 2014. Five years ago, we introduced the Student Travel Business Barometer to equip our stakeholders with timely, relevant and reliable data on the industry’s performance.
In its fifth year, the Barometer now offers a comprehensive view of one complete market cycle—capturing the industry’s pre-pandemic size and trends, documenting the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and tracking the gradual recovery that has led to establishing 2023 as a new baseline for future measurement benchmarks.
This report draws upon a consistent sample of leading student tour operators spanning up to 20 countries who contributed their time and data. This year, 134 student tour operators spanning 16 countries responded to the 2023 Business Barometer. They represent 30% of the leading student tour operators globally and moved more than 1.4 million students. Read the study now to learn from their insights.

HONORING THE PAST
This fall, the National Museum of the Marine Corps is unveiling two brand-new galleries that will take visitors on a journey through the United States Marine Corps’ history from the end of the Vietnam War to modern-day conflicts. The “Forward
Deployed” and “Afghanistan and Iraq” galleries open on October 6, 2024, and span over 20,000 square feet of immersive exhibits and powerful storytelling.
These galleries showcase the Marines’ experiences in post-Cold War operations, the Gulf War,
humanitarian missions, and the long conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Highlights include the M198 howitzer that fired the first shot in Desert Storm, a recreated Marine Corps berthing compartment, and an interactive walk through an Iraqi street. Visitors will also see the evolution of combat medicine, an F/A-18 Hornet that patrolled Washington, D.C., after 9/11, and much more.
Experience the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of our Marines through artifacts and narratives that bring history to life. Plan your visit and explore these captivating new additions to the museum. Plan your visit today at usmcmuseum.com.

Step back in time to learn, see, and experience how steam-powered engines drove the industrial revolution.
Lackawanna County’s history, much like the steam engine locomotive, is coal-powered. At Steamtown National Historic Site, located in downtown Scranton, you can learn the history of the steam engine, see the giant locomotives that helped expand our nation, hear the sensational true stories of those who rode, worked for, and built these beautiful machines, and, best of all, you can ride the rails. You will feel the weight of history as you tour this national museum and be amazed at the ingenuity of the engines and the turntable. Learn more at visitnepa.org.

TIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GROUP TRAVEL
iInternational travel can ignite a sense of wonder and curiosity like nothing else. But behind every unforgettable moment is a carefully laid plan—a balance between adventure and organization.
Leading a student group abroad is more than just booking flights and packing bags; it’s about navigating cultural nuances, overcoming logistical hurdles, and ensuring every student experiences something life-changing. Here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth and successful journey.
1. PARTNER WITH RECEPTIVE OPERATORS
When traveling to a foreign country, it’s incredibly helpful to work with a receptive operator— local experts who are often highly knowledgeable about local customs, logistical challenges and safety issues, which is especially important when traveling to extremely popular destinations that are currently experiencing (and sometimes even combating) profuse tourism. For example, if you’re touring with a band, a music-specialized operator might help arrange practice spaces, secure concert venues and connect you with an audience. Alternatively, your destination’s tourism board can be a valuable resource for local recommendations, safety tips and activity ideas.
2. UNDERSTAND LOCAL DIFFERENCES
Cultural and logistical differences between countries can catch even the most seasoned travelers off guard. Hotels: Don’t assume hotel rooms will follow the same setup as they do back home. In some countries, triples and quads are the norm, versus singles and doubles. Dining: Familiarize yourself with local dining customs. Restaurant hours, meal times, and tipping practices differ widely, and students should be prepared for changes in options and etiquette. Water: Tap water isn’t always safe to drink. Check the guidelines ahead of time and consider bottled water, especially in rural areas.
3. INSTRUMENTS
International travel with bulky or fragile instruments can be a logistical nightmare. Renting instruments in your destination may be a more practical and costeffective solution. If that’s not possible, consider buying new and then donating instruments afterward to local music schools or community groups. For larger instruments like mallet percussion, an electronic alternative such as a MalletKAT may offer flexibility.
4. COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL GROUPS
If your group plans to perform abroad, look into partnering with a local ensemble or team. Not only does this ensure a built-in audience, it also provides further opportunity for cultural connections.
5.
PLAN COMMUNICATIONS
Before departure, settle on a method of communication that
The more prepared they are for cultural differences, the more enriching and less stressful the experience will be.
works for the whole group, whether it’s WhatsApp, Skype, or traditional text messaging. Make sure everyone has the necessary apps installed and understands the potential for limited Wi-Fi or cellular service in certain areas.
6. SMART FINANCIAL PRACTICES
When it comes to handling finances, research is your best friend. Work only with trusted, peer-reviewed, bonded and licensed companies. Ensure you’re using safe payment methods, and be cautious about wire transfers or handling large amounts of cash in unfamiliar environments.
7.
PACK LIKE A PRO
Encourage students to pack light but smart. Include universal power adapters, portable chargers, and essential medicines (with any prescriptions) in their carry-ons.
8. PREPARE FOR CULTURE SHOCK
Traveling to a new country can be a big adjustment. Hold pre-trip meetings to educate students about the local customs, language, and etiquette of your destination. The more prepared they are for cultural differences, the more enriching and less stressful the experience will be.

MICHAEL MCLAUGHLIN:
EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO TAKE CHARGE
mMichael McLaughlin was the furthest he’d ever been from home, yet still had never been out of the country, when the idea of arranging a student trip overseas was first raised. Hailing from Massachusetts, he was teaching European History at a school in Mississippi, discussing Renaissance art in the classroom, when one of his students raised his hand and said, “Mr. McLaughlin, we’ve gotta go!”
The student’s point was valid, and it inspired the research and planning that followed. It’s one thing to read about art history in a book or hear about it through a lecture, but it’s an entirely different experience to learn about it—and see it—firsthand, in the places where it was made.
Mr. McLaughlin did go, first on his own, embarking on his first teacher training in Paris in 2009. Within a year, he launched a student travel initiative that has since taken him all around the globe over the last 15 years. That’s 21 different countries to be exact, and more than 1,000 students who have participated in his programs. It’s
no wonder he was among the finalists in Teach & Travel’s inaugural Traveling Teacher of the Year Award!
No longer teaching in Mississippi, Michael McLaughlin now serves as Head of Middle School at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Massachusetts, where he’s been for a decade. He also oversees all of the school’s major travel programs. But, it was certainly a journey getting there.
When asked about advice he would give to other educators who want to start or broaden a student travel program, McLaughlin stresses the importance of understanding the school’s identity and how traveling relates to it. “Our mission at Austin Prep is to ‘inspire hearts to unite, minds to inquire, and hands to serve’,” he says. “Knowing my school’s identity and its mission, I take the travel program through that prism. And, I think about the ways we are building community; a community of travelers and also the global community and connections there.”
He further elaborates by noting that for a school that
specializes in the arts, a service trip may not align, nor might a band trip for a school with a STEM focus. But when approached through the lens of a school’s mission, everything will fall into place. In short, he says, “Know thyself.”
McLaughlin also underscores the importance of planning in advance. That may sound like a given, but it takes on greater complexity when considering more than just logistics, hotel reservations, and motorcoach routes. “I try to be really thoughtful about how students are actively engaged in the learning,” he says. “An itinerary could include going to a certain museum or monument, or taking a walking tour. But, I pause to think about how, along the way, my students will be able to really participate in the experience and immerse themselves in the site.”
As an example, when Austin Prep students go on their annual Washington, D.C. trip—an eighth-grade tradition—they take an illuminated monuments tour. They break into small groups of 10 with a teacher chaperone, but instead of the teacher guiding them, the students in the group are assigned a different monument. And, when they get to their monument, that student acts as the docent for it, teaching their fellow classmates and giving them the history of it. Similarly, during trips to London, students share tidbits about royal history in front of the very palaces that house the monarchy. “Storytelling is essential in student travel, and you can’t tell good stories without good activities,” McLaughlin says.
One would forget for a moment that we’re talking about adolescent kids. And, while that may be a tough age group to wrangle, McLaughlin embraces the challenge by ensuring his students take ownership and aren’t passive travelers. That’s what results in a successful trip and provides the material to win support for future trips. “Students come back on fire and also very knowledgeable,” he says. “They’re able to be more articulate about their experiences and make connections
to the classroom. Parents see that value-add of how their child was transformed through travel.”
And it’s that shift that’s meaningful to McLaughlin, who sees how travel can often be transactional, but strives to ensure that, instead, it’s transformational. “As educators, we’re in the business of people, and of young people in particular,” he says. “It may be more cost effective to go with tour operator A, for example, but operator B may have offerings that are really going to enhance the student experience. That’s important because when kids get outside of the classroom and into the world, that’s when they’re able to have these incredible windows into the lives and cultures and experiences of other people. It’s really powerful.”
“We’ve taken to heart our patron St. Augustine’s observation that ‘the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page,’” Dr. James Hickey, Head of School says. “Austin Prep students and staff annually have exciting travel opportunities. Some are to places we travel each year and others are to places that are new and novel. Each trip creates an experience found in no book or classroom and nurtures some wisdom to navigate the journey ahead.”
For the 2024-2025 academic year, Japan, Bermuda, Quebec, Washington, D.C., and Orlando, as well as a study abroad program in London are all on the horizon. And, Austin Prep continues to grow, with a goal of visiting six continents. That eventually means travels to Africa, which McLaughlin is especially excited about.
As his nominator for Traveling Teacher of the Year wrote, “Michael has presented and written about the importance of youth travel and has appeared on podcasts about experiential education, meaning that he is not just a practitioner in the field but is also contributing to the dialogue that empowers other teachers to journey with their students.”

HEALTHY TRAVELS: MANAGING STUDENT ILLNESS ON SCHOOL TRIPS
wWhen leading a student group on a travel adventure, nothing can derail a trip faster than illness. From motion sickness to full-blown flu or even Covid, student health must be a top priority to keep the group experience enjoyable and safe.
Preparation is key, and handling sickness efficiently can minimize disruption while keeping your students as healthy as possible. Here’s how you can manage the health of your students during travel, both in preparation and if illness strikes.
Collect Medical Forms Early | Before your trip begins, gather signed medical forms from parents or guardians. These forms should include a list of any medications the student may need and authorization for emergency medical treatment. Having this documentation on hand will make it much easier to respond swiftly and effectively if a student falls ill or requires medical attention.
Prepare Bus Bags | Long bus rides can lead to various discomforts, from motion sickness to irritability, but you can prepare with bus bags. Essentials like motion sickness medication, hand sanitizer, bottled water, and snacks should be included, as well as remedies for minor headaches or nausea.
Emphasize Cleanliness | Emphasize the importance of regular hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer, especially before meals and after handling shared items like railings or doors. Germs spread fast in close quarters, but good hygiene can help prevent illness from spreading throughout the group.
Prepare Students for Common Travel Woes | First-time student travelers often aren’t prepared for the physical demands of long trips. Motion sickness, ear pain, jet lag, and sunburn are just a few examples of travel issues that can arise unexpectedly. Be proactive by bringing along extra medications, such as ibuprofen, motion sickness tablets, and sunscreen. Encourage students to prepare for discomforts by packing these items themselves—anything to avoid the last-minute scramble for relief.
Motion Sickness | For students prone to motion sickness, sitting at the front of the bus can make a big difference. Let them know they’re welcome to sit in these seats, with a pillow for comfort and a trash can nearby for safety.
Encourage Healthy Eating | During travel, it can be tempting for students to overindulge in soda, greasy fast food, or sugary snacks. While a little indulgence is fine, remind your students to keep a balanced diet to avoid upset stomachs and low energy. Greasy food in particular can lead to nausea, which isn’t fun on a moving bus or plane.
Keep Students Hydrated | Spring and summer travel often means warm weather, and dehydration can creep up quickly. Encourage students to drink water regularly throughout the day. Carrying cases of water bottles on the bus is a great way to ensure hydration is accessible.
Get Travel Insurance | Travel insurance is vital in case a student needs medical attention while abroad and/or needs to leave the trip altogether. Ensure that parents are strongly encouraged to obtain insurance for their teens.
WHEN ILLNESS STRIKES
Notify Parents Immediately | As soon as a student feels unwell, reach out to their parents or guardians promptly. Keeping the lines of communication open allows parents to feel reassured and provides them with the chance to share any helpful advice or medical history.
Arrange Transportation | If the illness requires medical attention but is not an emergency, assist the student in getting to the hospital or clinic. Tour leaders will often stay with the main group while chaperones or trusted adults help with transportation.
Encourage Rest and Hydration | Sometimes, all a student needs is a day to rest. Encourage sick students to rest at the hotel or lodging, rehydrate, and take it easy. Depending on their recovery, you can discuss rejoining the group at a later point in the day. Make sure they’re in a comfortable environment with easy access to water, light snacks, and any necessary medications.
Quarantine the Sick Student | In today’s post-pandemic world, illness prevention still matters. If a student shows signs of contagious illness, isolate them from the rest of the group as much as possible. A separate hotel room or a quieter space is ideal for minimizing the risk of spreading illness to others. Avoid bringing the sick student back into close quarters with the group until they’re feeling better.
Having documentation on hand will make it much easier to respond swiftly and effectively if a student falls ill or requires medical attention.
EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCES PUT THE OH! IN OHIO
What’s there to do in the Buckeye State, you ask? More than you might imagine! This Midwest gem is filled with a mix of educational and recreational activities for student groups, whether it’s history, the arts, science, nature, or straightup fun. Let’s look at some of our favorite places and activities to put on your trip itinerary.
Set on Lake Erie, the Shores & Islands region overflows with excitement, starting with African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. The 65-acre grounds offers drive-thru and walk-thru safaris where students can see a variety of animals up close and attend an educational show. There’s also a life-sized Dinosaur Takeover exhibit that’s included in general admission. A number of Animal Encounters are offered as well, plus gem mining and an on-site café. Note that they are open late spring to late fall and have varying hours, so check the calendar before you go.
At Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center at Put-inBay on South Bass Island, groups can venture into a natural limestone cave, visit the Butterfly House, play miniature golf with a history lesson along the way, mine for gems, or weave through Fort aMaze’n giant maze challenge. Planners can purchase a daily or hourly tour train package to get there and get around.
There’s also Cedar Point, which is kind of selfexplanatory, isn’t it? But, in addition to thrill rides, they offer educational programs, performance opportunities, and meal and drink options. And, Ghostly Manor Thrill Center, also in Sandusky, offers chills on top of thrills, with an escape room, haunted house, laser maze, roller skating, VR gaming, and an XD 4D theater. They have group passes and food options, as well. While in Sandusky, stay and play at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, which, in addition to accommodations, has indoor and outdoor waterparks and a safari park.
Onward to Zanesville, in Muskingum County, which is about an hour east of Columbus. Fun fact: Zanesville served as the capital of Ohio from 1810 to 1812! Here is a place to slow down and immerse students in the important history of the area.
Begin with a stop at The Stone Academy, one of the oldest buildings in the county. It functioned as a school, a public building, a private residence, and a station on the Underground Railroad. Today, it’s a museum with a number of fascinating exhibits, from a hidden trapdoor leading to a secret crawlspace, to books, artwork, artifacts, and more. While on site, make sure to visit the Putnam UGRR Interpretive Center, open May to September. Also of interest is Dr. Increase Mathews House, which features historic room settings, a military history display, archaeological and Native American artifacts, and other items from the past. Afterward, head to The Gant House, nearby, which is the once residence of Nelson T. Gant, a former enslaved person and conductor on the Underground Railroad.
Another must in the area is the John & Annie Glenn Museum, which honors astronaut and senator John Glenn and his wife, Annie, who was a disability rights advocate. Of additional interest in Zanesville is the National Road and Zane Grey Museum. Three museums in one, it highlights U.S. 40, known as “the Main Street of America;” the life and works of Zane Grey, a prolific writer of western novels; and a collection local pottery.
Not far from Zanesville is The Wilds, a 10,000acre safari park and conservation center—one of the largest in the world. Students can take a guided safari tour across expansive pastures and grasslands, with rare and endangered species, such as giraffes, rhinos, and cheetahs, on view in their natural habitats. There’s also the DayVentures School Day Program led by their Conservation Education Team. Topics and activities typically focus on wilderness
survival, canoeing, and a pasture tour. Education Overnights—complete with yurt sleeping quarters and s’mores—are also a popular choice for school groups. Also led by the Conservation Team, these stays involve night hikes, educational activities, and safari tours. The Wilds is a partner of The Columbus Zoo, and that’s where we’re headed next.
Turning attention to the state’s capital, one of the noteworthy destinations in the vicinity is Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The zoo serves as home to 10,000plus animals representing more than 600 species. It also offers a wide range of programs, including self-guided activities for day trips and after-hours adventures that include night hikes, animal encounters, special activities, and next-day admission to the zoo. They also provide downloadable resources for educators. If traveling in November, consider taking part in the Teen Eco Summit, which assembles 300-plus high school students to create Conservation Action Plans, work with experts, and apply for grant funding.
Last stop, Cleveland! We’ve touched on history, nature, and amusement, now let’s turn our attention to art, culture, and entertainment. The performing arts are alive at Playhouse Square, the country’s largest performing arts district outside of New York. The district has 12 venues, including restored historic theaters, and shows range from local productions to Broadway hits. Here, student groups can not only see
a show, they can also book a behind-the-scenes tour. Also recommended is Karamu House on Cleveland’s east side. It’s the oldest African American producing theater in the nation and described as “A place of joyful gathering.” It also touts Langston Hughes among its alumni.
A visit to University Circle is definitely in order, with such draws as Severance Music Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland History Center, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. All of these attractions are within walking distance of one another and each has its own unique offering.
There’s also the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which should not be missed! With its four theaters and seven stories of memorabilia, artifacts, video, and interactive stations, its pays respect to some of the biggest icons in music.
Finally, cap off your trip at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. They have more than 250 species and 3,600-plus animals, seven exhibit-filled galleries, and daily and rotating activities, such as touchpools, discovery carts, feedings, animal encounters, and more. For one last hurrah while in the area, cross the Cuyahoga River on the free eLCee2 Water Taxi!

CANADA’S CAPITAL EXPLORED OTTAWA:
wWhen planning student group travel, Ottawa stands tall as a premier destination, offering a rich blend of history, culture, and adventure.
As Canada’s capital, it opens students’ eyes to the heart and soul of the nation, through landmarks, natural wonders, and interactive experiences that make learning come alive.
Whether it’s exploring the seat of Canadian democracy, cycling through scenic paths, or soaring across the Ottawa River, Ottawa is an educational treasure trove that leaves lasting memories.
Stepping Into History and Heritage
Ottawa’s national sites and monuments offer a front-row seat to Canada’s history. A visit to Parliament Hill is a must, where students can tour the iconic gothic buildings that house the nation’s leaders, and even catch the ceremonial Changing of the Guard in summer months. Just steps away lies the National War Memorial , a tribute to Canadian military personnel, and the Supreme Court of Canada , where students can gain insights into the country’s legal system.
Take a stroll along the historic Rideau Canal , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that played a crucial role in Canada’s early defense. In winter, the canal transforms into the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink. Imagine gliding across its glassy surface with students, hot cocoa in hand, as the crisp air invigorates your senses. This seasonal wonder is a highlight of Winterlude, a winter festival in February filled with ice sculptures, ice slides, and an array of frosty fun.
For a more contemporary yet fascinating stop, head to the Royal Canadian Mint, where students can see the magic behind coin-making unfold before their eyes. It’s a hands-on lesson in both economics and craftsmanship!
Indigenous Roots at Madahòkì Farm
A new and profound experience awaits at Mādahòkì Farm, where students can immerse themselves in the living history and enduring connection of Indigenous people to the land. From seasonal festivals to handson workshops, this attraction offers a space to learn about Indigenous traditions. The farm is also home to the Ojibwe Spirit Horses, a rare breed deeply rooted in Indigenous culture. The opportunity to encounter these majestic creatures while learning about their significance makes for a memorable and impactful visit.
Museums That Captivate
No visit to Ottawa is complete without exploring the Canadian Museum of History, the most visited museum in the country. The museum houses the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles and tells the compelling stories of Canada’s First Nations peoples, along with those who came after. Every artifact, every exhibit speaks to the diverse tapestry that has shaped this nation. From ancient Indigenous cultures to modern Canada, this museum is a journey through time.
For students eager to dive further into history, a day trip to Upper Canada Village offers a chance to step back into 1860. With over 40 heritage buildings and costumed interpreters, students can witness what life was like in rural Canada more than a century ago. History comes to life in every corner of this living museum, from the bustling blacksmith shop to the fragrant bakery.
Adventures in the Great Outdoors
Ottawa is a city where nature and recreation are never far. In the warmer months, over 800 kilometers of cycling paths crisscross the city, allowing students to take in its beauty on two wheels. For those seeking more thrills, Interzip Rogers offers the world’s first interprovincial zipline, soaring 120 feet above the Ottawa River from Ontario to Quebec. Ziplining, aerial parks, and white-water rafting adventures in the nearby Gatineau Hills are perfect for the adrenaline seekers in your group.
And then there’s Parc Omega , where students can experience Canada’s wildlife up close. USING AI FOR TRAVEL
rRecently, I attended a workshop on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to plan and implement festivals and events.
The facilitator asked the festival directors to highlight a challenge that they faced. One event planner shared that their town officials wanted to charge the festival committee for water, electricity, security and trash pickup. The festival had not been charged an impact fee in the 38 years it existed (an event that brings in 60,000 visitors and has a huge economic impact on the town). Now, the town wanted to recoup expenditures for this event. The event planner wanted to have a positive response to the town officials about this new impact fee.
The workshop facilitator typed the information into AI and within a minute, AI responded with a wellthought out, responsible answer in both paragraph and bullet points. As I listened to this presentation and saw the value of using AI, my wheels started turning. There is no doubt that AI could be used for a variety of purposes, including educational travel.
The educator could use AI to come up with a list of possible destinations to visit including highlights about each of those destinations to help the group decide where they wanted to visit. Once a destination was chosen, the educator could use AI to customize teaching about the destination for each participant. This would help
students get personalized learning and discover more about the destination. If assignments (before or after the trip) were related to the travel destination, the teacher could provide real-time feedback to the students.
The University of San Diego highlighted 43 examples of Artificial Intelligence in Education that included behavioral management, parent-teacher communication, language learning, transportation, and safety and security. When planning travel, the educator could use AI to implement behavioral management that highlights tactics other educators using to discipline students on a trip.
Prior to and during the trip, AI can be used to keep parents informed about the trip details, trip highlights, and unexpected occurrences like flight delays. The teacher can rely on AI to make sure the correspondence is delivered with upbeat words that invite positive feedback. The students can practice learning new languages (if traveling to a foreign
country), take quizzes and receive assessments on their progression through AI software.
Teachflow wrote an article about AI and School Travel and Tourism: Exploring the World. In the article, it stated, “AI has the potential to enhance every aspect of the travel experience. It enables them to explore different cultures, historical sites, and natural wonders, providing enriched learning experiences that go beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.” It further stressed that AI can be used in planning and booking personalized experiences, optimizing itineraries based on students’ interests and preferences.
Other information AI can provide includes cost-effective measures, flight availability, accommodations options, and local transportation.
The Teachflow article summed up their article about the impact of AI in three key areas: (1) Enriched learning experiences (2) Increased efficiency in travel management and (3) Improved safety measurements that would benefit an educator who
is leading a student trip.
There are some challenges, of course including infrastructure, data management and cost. Getting an AI account is free; however, the services provided are limited. Educators must have conversations with their school administrators to see if a paid account ($20-$40/mo.) is financially feasible.
Another key conversation between educators and school administrators is ethics. AI collects and analyzes personal information. Is this a violation of data privacy and security? What information is AI gathering that may violate FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Acts)? The teacher and school must weigh the pros and cons here.
In May 2024, USA Today surveyed 1,400 people to learn if they are open to or have previously used AI to plan their travel. 50% of
“AI has the potential to enhance every aspect of the travel experience. It enables them to explore different cultures, historical sites, and natural wonders, providing enriched learning experiences that go beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.”
those surveyed stated they have or planned to use AI for trip planning and listed AI as a major theme in the future of travel. Kayak, Expedia and other online travel tools already use AI whether you realize it or not. No matter whether you are using ChapGPT, Guide Geek, Forgemytrip, Co-Pilot or something else entirely, you must make sure the information
you receive is trustworthy and accurate. AI may be a good starting point to plan travel, but then follow up with a trusted source to verify the information.
Artificial intelligence is here to stay. It will never fully replace a qualified travel agent, but it can certainly be a helpful tool to supplement, prepare and brainstorm.

THE POWER OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE
cCraig Howat is a hotel, restaurant and tourism teacher at the Satellite Center in Luling, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. Howat has been teaching for more than 25 years, giving his students a hands-on experience by traveling to hotels, restaurants, performing arts centers, and beyond. That’s why three of his former students nominated him for the inaugural Traveling Teacher of the Year Award.
His unique class is all about travel and tourism, offering hands-on activities like catering events, or spending a day in the French Quarter acting as tour guides for younger students. This means high school seniors doing “on-site” research, developing their own four-hour tours, and then presenting them to a group of 4th graders. Howat says the students are often scared at first, but getting over that is just part of the growth they experience (not to mention the fact it looks good on a college app).
For a larger trip, he was hoping to take his class to Guadalupe for a cultural exchange, but natural disasters put that plan on hold momentarily, and they instead shifted to an exchange in Quebec. We asked Howat to tell us more about this special trip.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO DO A CULTURAL EXCHANGE?
The beauty of an exchange is you’re living in the house with the families, taking those memories and experiences. It was just beautiful. It was a 10-day trip so it’s not like they were learning to speak French fluently, but the households they’re staying at are fluent, and you have to be able to learn and communicate. So, we tied that into the curriculum, and every day they had 15 or so minutes of Duolingo time to work on their French.
ASIDE FROM STUDENTS EXPERIENCING SNOW FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, WHAT WAS A HIGHLIGHT?
Here in Louisiana, we have some families that struggle with generational poverty and don’t always get these experiences. Our district said, “Look, if you’re gonna take these kids, you gotta take everybody. It doesn’t matter who it is, it doesn’t matter how.” So, we did some class fundraising to be able to do this, and two of the kids, in the houses that they stayed in, their family had meals every night, and that was their greatest takeaway.
We had them present in front of other students at the school, faculty and parents as part of their reflection. Some of their greatest memories were sitting down and having that daily discipline of having a meal together. They’d never had that. And they said it was almost like a dream, like living in a fairy tale world. It made me appreciate, we might sit down and have a meal every day, but not everybody has that opportunity, or even knows about it, right? That, to me, is more than just a curriculum. It’s an impact on the way you live and possibly on the way that you raise your own children, and the way your own family may do things when you get to that age.
HOW ELSE DID YOU SEE THIS TRIP AFFECT STUDENTS?
I think it sparked a curiosity of the world. I know three of the 10 students, now in college, are planning to do an exchange year. Once you start, man, it lights that fire inside you, and that wanderlust just kind of takes over. One of them’s already been twice outside of the country since. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful way to see a young adult blossom into who they can possibly be.
THE VALUE OF “FAR”
hHow far do you want to be from the program house? Five minutes? Ten?
We were gearing up to start our nine-day homestays in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, and I was prompted by our group leader to take a geographical risk. They identified that a few more minutes of walking each day would create independent moments for exploration, thought, and discomfort; in a surge of boldness, I answered that question with a single word: far.
My stomach twisted with a roiling mix of excitement and nerves as I stepped out onto the porch where the homestay mothers gathered. Thoughts threaded through my mind: how could I form a relationship across the Spanish language barrier? What would it feel like to live with a family for nearly two weeks and then leave?
My homestay sister Belén was the first to draw me back to the moment. At 6 years old, she simply took my hand as she, my homestay mom, Victoria, and I walked home through the colorful streets of San Juan. She communicated through physical touch, play, and laughter. Less confined by the barriers of language, she was able to mediate a connection almost instantaneously.
My homestay mom and I took more time to understand each other, yet we fostered our relationship through cooking. Making pitiful, misshapen tortillas and watching her fry and eat them just the same taught me she was patient and compassionate.
While my immediate household was a unit of three, hidden in the word “far” was a larger network
of family. I got to know Victoria’s sister and mother who equally welcomed students into their homes. I grew up in a place where success is measured by the child’s departure from their parental figures. In San Juan, I witnessed the strength of siblings and parents who shared lives into adulthood.
Nine days encircled by their intertwined lives and love, my onedimensional understanding of my future began to shift. I endeavor to pursue my interests yet maintain strong community connections akin to what I witnessed.
On our final day, Victoria helped me dress for our homestay-family potluck, and we all gathered in the
library for a concluding meal. I tried to communicate my gratitude for her in my sputtering Spanish, but eventually, I reverted to 6-year-old wisdom and hugged her. I attempted to embrace her in a way that said “Thank you for creating a space for me in your family. Thank you for teaching me hidden and important lessons.”
The morning we left, Belén and Victoria parted with me at the first street corner. I took those minutes alone to feel all the emotions of departure, to savor the rainbowhued city streets and breathe in the aromas of tortillerias one last time.
As I walked that last distance to the program house, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for “far.”
