Seraphic Fire’s mission

is to present the highest quality performances of historically significant and under-performed music, and advance art through the professional development, refinement, and documentation of our musicians’ talents and promote community connectivity through education programs.

Seraphic Fire’s 2022-23 20th Anniversary Season is almost upon us, and I’m eager to share the exciting programs and events we have planned. We’ll feature local and national collaborations – including partnerships with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano, New World Symphony, and the Aspen Music Festival – as well as new initiatives focused on raising funds for growth and sustainability. Stay tuned for additional announcements throughout the year as November draws near.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, I’m also reminded of the fact that we are still a young organization, and the connection we have to our original audience is unique. The opportunity to get to know listeners who have been with Seraphic Fire since its founding year is a special experience. It is also a pleasure to see new faces and audiences as we expand our reach beyond South Florida.

A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Leon Schelhase, found himself resonating with Baroque music from an early age. Early Music America Magazine has praised Leon’s solo performances as “exquisite… and filled with virtuosity,” and as well as being a recipient of the American Bach Soloists’ prestigious Goldberg Prize he was a finalist in the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition. As a freelance continuo artist, he has played with both major orchestras and opera companies including the Phoenix Symphony, Chicago Opera Theatre, American Bach Soloists, and Tempesta di Mare, and with chamber ensembles House of Time (New York), Pegasus Early Music (Rochester, NY), Chatham Baroque (Pittsburgh), the Boston-based conductorless string orchestra A Far Cry, and The Philadelphia Bach Festival Orchestra. Leon holds a BMus (Hons) from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s Degree in Historical Performance from Boston University where he studied with Peter Sykes. In 2012, Leon joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music as a harpsichord instructor.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT JONATHAN WOODY BASS

Jonathan Woody is a versatile and soughtafter musician who works primarily as a performer of early and new music. An accomplished bass-baritone, Jonathan performs regularly with the GRAMMY®nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street, and with ensembles including TENET Vocal Artists, the Clarion Music Society, and the Washington Bach Consort. In recent seasons, he has performed as a soloist with leading historically-informed orchestras including Portland Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the Boston Early Music Festival, and Apollo’s Fire.

Established in the world of new music as a performer and composer, Jonathan has, in recent years, premiered or performed new works by Ellen Reid, Missy Mazzoli, Ted Hearne, and Du Yun, among others.

Jonathan is committed to racial equity in the field of the performing arts and currently serves on Early Music America’s Task Force for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, Jonathan holds degrees from McGill University and the University of Maryland, College Park.

BIEBL: AVE MARIA MUSIC FOR MEN’S CHORUS James K. Bass, conductor

Associate Conductor James K. Bass leads the men of Seraphic Fire in a rousing concert of sea shanties, German partsongs, and the centerpiece of Franz Biebl’s iconic Ave Maria. Biebl wrote Ave Maria for an all-male Bavarian Firemen’s Chorus in the summer of 1959. Seraphic Fire now performs the Biebl and explores the tradition of music for men’s choirs that inspired this singular work. This stirring concert showcases the men of Seraphic Fire in a presentation of favorites as well as new compositions from Ileana Velazquez and Seraphic Fire University of Miami Student Composers-in-Residence, Melissa D’Albora and Sydney Doemel.

HANDEL: MESSIAH Patrick Dupre Quigley, conductor

Handel’s Messiah has been in continuous performance since virtually the day of its premiere. Given its first performance in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah was instantly recognized by audiences and critics alike as a singular piece of music. For the first time since 2004, Seraphic Fire will perform Handel’s complete work. From the excitement of For Unto Us a Child is Born to the magnificence of the Hallelujah Chorus, Messiah is one of the consummate masterpieces of the Baroque canon. Though now most commonly performed at Christmastime, Seraphic Fire will perform the masterwork in April as a tribute to its original composition for the Easter season.

John must have been filled with the Spirit, the bond of love drew him already in his mother’s body, so that he knew the Savior, even though he could not yet name Him with his mouth, he became lively, he leapt and stirred, while Elizabeth expressed the miracle, while Mary’s mouth made her lip’s offering.

If you, o believers, note the weakness of the flesh, if your hearts burn in love, and yet your mouths do not acknowledge the Savior, then it is God who will powerfully strengthen you, He will stir up the power of the spirit in you, indeed lay thanks and praise upon your tongues.

SHARES HIS PASSION FOR BACH

By Beth Braswell “Bach is the bedrock of music and Seraphic Fire.” As Quigley describes the music of Bach, it’s like watching a teenager wax passionately about their first love.

There are pensive moments where he is remembering the exhilaration of past Seraphic Fire performances, and as he describes each composition, there is sincere adulation for the genius present in the music.

Seraphic Fire’s first performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor – a ‘onenight only’ show in front of 1,000 people – was one of its greatest early accomplishments. Only a year earlier, Seraphic Fire did not exist. Being able to embrace the music of Bach wholeheartedly and with such success paved the efficacious path of Seraphic Fire. Similarly, collaborating with The Cleveland Orchestra on Cantata 34 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts was a defining triumph. The members of Seraphic Fire stood on stage with one of America’s greatest orchestras and were equals in their performance. It was exhilarating for everyone involved.

After almost 20 years of sharing Bach with South Florida audiences, Seraphic Fire will present three of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works during the ensemble’s annual Enlightenment Festival in February 2022.

Cantata 147, Hertz und Mund und Tat und Leben, contains one of the most memorable melodies in all of music, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

Cantata 62, based on Martin Luther’s Advent hymn, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, features arresting choruses and luxurious arias. Bach’s Mass in G Minor is, effectively, a jewel box for his most favorite cantata pieces and not to be missed.

– Patrick Dupre Quigley Seraphic Fire’s members are recognized as stellar Bach singers. In fact, they are required to audition with Bach repertoire. As just one example, Seraphic Fire soprano Nola Richardson has the distinction of having won first place in the three major Bach competitions in the US. Likewise, Seraphic Fire’s period orchestra is supremely talented. The violins, violas, and cellos use gut strings as they would have in the Baroque period, in contrast with modern metal strings. The earthy quality, the warmth and overtones in historical instruments are readily audible and completely different from today’s instruments.

Seraphic Fire audiences, listening to Bach played on copies of original

instruments, are privy to the tones and nuances the composer himself would have heard.

“Performing on period instruments helps clear away some of the soot and varnish to get back to what Bach originally heard,” said Quigley.

Quigley emphasizes that it’s important that everyone perform this historically relevant and revered music, not just Seraphic Fire. There is not much argument on the worth of Bach’s art. His music is widely accepted as the standard to which all composers strive to achieve. Bach’s music speaks profoundly in very few notes; those notes are simultaneously new and reverent of the past. Although prolific in his compositions, Bach wrote little besides notes and tempo on the page, with an economy of articulation and dynamic indications. Nonetheless, the arresting nature of Bach’s music is so universal that it has been quoted in jazz, in popular music, and even commercials.

This season, Seraphic Fire’s Enlightenment Festival includes the breadth of Bach’s compositions. Listeners will hear very complicated and virtuosic writing for voice and instruments and, equally compelling, Bach provides supremely simple, yet majestic moments.

Cantata 62. Translated as “Savior of the Nations Come,” this cantata is written for the Advent season. The listener can hear and feel from the first heraldic notes of the oboe that something magnificent is about to happen.

G Minor Mass. Many people are unaware that Bach wrote more than just the B Minor mass. Concerned about where his music fit into music history next to Vivaldi, Pergolesi, and particularly Palestrina, Bach references the counterpoint of the Renaissance but brings it into the Baroque period.

Cantata 147. Quigley describes this cantata as one of the pinnacle experiences for lovers of Bach and Seraphic Fire. The opening movement features a trumpet concerto that seamlessly interacts with contrapuntal music for the chorus. Conversely, the piece that divides it and ends it—Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring—is a very simple melody played in the orchestra. This composition ranks as one of the most recognizable melodies of all time.

Nola Richardson, soprano As a singer, I love that Bach really treats the voices as instruments.

They are interwoven so beautifully with the entire ensemble; the choir is never a separate soundscape.

Seraphic Fire is a masterful choir; they love understanding harmony and listening to the other singers and instruments.

They perform as expertly and cohesively as Bach intended. Your brain can almost hear the calculus going on; your part is just one beautiful thread within the entire tapestry.

Josh Cohen, Baroque trumpet I have played across the country with groups who perform on original instruments, and I hear a lot of choruses. Patrick only picks the best of the best of the best singers, so it’s a thrill to hear the highest quality Bach performances in the US, right here in South Florida. The advantage of the Baroque trumpet, because of its 2.5 - foot length, is that it has twice the overtones, sounding 2 times bigger than the modern trumpet. It is, however, a difficult instrument to master. With no buttons, a different tension in your lips is how the sound is made to climb higher or descend.

David Webb, Seraphic Fire patron I have been attending Seraphic Fire performances since 2007 and am a donor as well. It is incredible that this ensemble has never ceased to impress. The singers that Patrick pulls in are always high, highlevel artists. I float out after every Seraphic Fire concert; I am so elevated spiritually. Bach is so inspiring and exhilarating that I listen to him on a daily basis.

My ear loves the sound of the original instruments. It’s a purer tone, less strident. It sucks you into the music.

SERAPHIC FIRE YOUTH INITIATIVE WORKSHOPS

EDUCATION CONCERTS

The Seraphic Fire education quartet visited eight public schools in Miami-Dade County in November to share an educational workshop on American music. Students learned new songs, sang along with our education quartet, and learned more about African American spirituals, Harriet Tubman, and composer Undine Smith Moore.

In December, Seraphic Fire singers presented two education concerts to a total of 700 students and teachers. Concerts included excerpts from A Seraphic Fire Christmas. A highlight of these concerts were students from our two Choral Education Residency programs —Fulford Elementary and Dr. E. L. Whigham Elementary— joining Seraphic Fire to sing Still, Still, Still. Each school also presented a musical selection that they prepared throughout the fall semester for an audience of their peers.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music (EAP) provides season-long vocal ensemble training to undergraduate and graduate voice students at UCLA. Participating artists are chosen through competitive auditions chaired by Associate Conductor James K. Bass. This collaboration aims to help emerging professional singers discover outlets for professional employment while fulfilling Seraphic Fire’s educational mission to advance art through the professional development and refinement of our musicians’ talents while promoting community connectivity. Participating students are invited to South Florida every season to perform alongside the professional ensemble in subscription concerts. The EAP is one part of Seraphic Fire’s multi-pronged education initiatives that aim to develop the next generation of professional ensemble singers.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT ANITA PLATT

I have been volunteering for Seraphic Fire for about 6 years. I have always loved choral music and have been singing in choirs much of my life. When I first heard a Seraphic Fire performance, I was mesmerized. This group takes it to a whole new level. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to help in a small way to make performances run smoothly. I’m looking forward to the new season after a year and a half without any live music.
