As a supporter and partner, I hope you take tremendous pride in this organization. Our resilience over the past 20 months, and ability to experiment and continue pursuing our strategic vision, is largely due to one all-important factor – you! I cannot overstate how appreciative we are to be cared for, supported, and trusted by such generous and loyal individuals. As Patrick expresses in his note on page 33, we are nothing without your presence. With your support, we now can look to a season full of live musical experiences, and plan for a celebratory 20th Anniversary Season just around the corner. What a joy it will be to make music together with you again! Rhett M. Del Campo Executive Director
On behalf of the entire Board at Seraphic Fire I would like to welcome you back to a full season of inspiring and transcendent live musical performances. During a conversation about what it is that makes people want to support this organization, I realized that for me it is because every time I attend a performance I am changed for the better. I feel more peaceful, more inspired, and ready to accept the beauty in our world despite its many challenges. In what is likely the most challenging year ever faced by Seraphic Fire, we have witnessed the determination of the artists and staff in creating six multimedia concerts, twelve podcasts with conversations that enlighten us, the release of a remarkable and groundbreaking CD of Hildegard von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum, and, in May, a recording session that resulted in multiple videos and the recording of two CDs for our future enjoyment. We also added over 100 new supporters during a period when many arts organizations have been dormant. All of this is made possible by the passion, hard work and creativity of our artists and staff, the careful guidance and leadership of our executives, and most importantly, your faith in and support of Seraphic Fire and its mission. For sheer impact on arts and arts education in South Florida, you cannot make a better investment than to support the work of Seraphic Fire. Thank you and welcome back. Dr. Thomas C. Boyd Chair, Seraphic Fire Board of Directors

Reginald Mobley
Lauren Snouffer
Francesca Zambello
Particularly noted for his “shimmering voice, a voice which also allows lucid and pure levels” (BachTrack), countertenor Reginald Mobley is highly sought after for baroque, classical and modern repertoire.
Recognized for her unique artistic curiosity in world-class performances spanning the music of Claudio Monteverdi and Johann Adolph Hasse through to Missy Mazzoli and George Benjamin, American Lauren Snouffer is celebrated as one of the most versatile and respected sopranos on the international stage.
Francesca Zambello is an internationally recognized director of opera and theater, as well as the General Director of The Glimmerglass Festival since 2010 and the Artistic Director of The Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center since 2012. She has also served as the Artistic Advisor to the San Francisco Opera from 20052011 and as the Artistic Director of the Skylight Theater from 1987-1992. In her current roles at the Kennedy Center and the Glimmerglass Festival she is responsible for producing 12 productions annually. She has begun major commissioning programs for new works in both companies that have resulted in productions of many large and small-scaled new works. Both companies have thrived financially and increased their national and international profiles as a result of her artistic vision and leadership.
Reginald leads a very prolific career in the United States, where he resides. In March 2020, he became the first ever programming consultant for the Handel and Haydn Society following several years of leading H+H in his community-engaging Every Voice concerts. He is a regular guest with Cantata Collective, Musica Angelica, Agave Baroque, Charlotte Bach Akademie, Seraphic Fire, Quodlibet, Pacific Music Works, Bach Collegium San Diego, San Francisco Early Music Society, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. In Europe, his career is expanding; in the UK, he has toured with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists for the last five years, and continues to do so, and has performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music and is due to make his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in June 2022. He was also invited to perform with the OH! (Orkiestra Historycsna) in Poland and the Vienna Academy in Austria (Musikverein), gave a recital (with a Spiritual programme) at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, toured with the Freiburger Barockorchester under Kristian Bezuidenhout, Balthasar Neumann Chor & Ensemble and the Bach Society in Stuttgart.
During the current season, Lauren Snouffer makes her debut at the Opéra national du Rhin in the lead role of The Snow Queen, by Hans Abrahamsen, in a new production directed by James Bonas and Grégoire Pont under the baton of Robert Houssart. She returns to Houston Grand Opera for a production by Francesca Zambello of Dialogues des Carmélites conducted by Patrick Summers and bows in no less than two new productions with the Opernhaus Zürich: she is the title role in the world premiere of Girl with a Pearl Earring by composer Stefan Wirth and she performs Argene in Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade in a new production conducted by Ottavio Dantone. The soprano joins The Dallas Opera for Opera Galas and concertizes with Patrick Dupre Quigley and Seraphic Fire in their performances of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. She returns to Mercury Chamber Orchestra for a program of Vivaldi and Handel and appears with Ars Lyrica Houston in fully-staged performances of Purcell’s Dido and Æneas.
Her American directing debut took place at the Houston Grand Opera with a production of Fidelio. She debuted in Europe at Teatro la Fenice in Venice with Beatrice di Tenda and has since staged new productions at major theaters and opera houses in Europe and the USA. She has worked at over 50 major opera houses including: The Met, La Scala, Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Paris Opera, the Bolshoi, Munich State Opera, Covent Garden and the Australian Opera.

Program Note from Patrick Dupre Quigley: Two of the finest singers to ever grace the Seraphic Fire stage – Lauren Snouffer, soprano, and Reginald Mobley, countertenor – return to open Seraphic Fire’s triumphant 2021-22 Season with Giovanni Battista Draghi’s (a.k.a. “Pergolesi”) undisputed masterpiece, Stabat Mater dolorosa for voices, strings, and continuo. Arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach, borrowed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, and quoted by Esteban Salas, the Stabat Mater would be one of, if not the most, influential pieces of concert music during the entire 18th century. By 1800, the Stabat Mater had been published more than 30 times, its influence reaching all the way to the New World. Rounding out this program will be two capricci from L’arte del violin (The Art of the Violin) by the ultimate Baroque virtuoso and 18th-century influencer Pietro Locatelli.

TEXT & TRANSLATIONS | PERGOLESI’S STABAT MATER America the Beautiful
Taedet animam
O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
Taedet animam meam vitae meae, dimittam adversum me eloquium meum, loquar in amaritudine animae meae. Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnare: indica mihi, cur me ita iudices.
I am weary at heart of my life; I will speak out at my own risk, and express the bitterness in my soul. I shall say to God: Do not condemn me, but show me why you judge me this way. Shall it seem a good thing to you to cheapen me and oppress me, a man of your own making, and to support the schemes of the wicked?
Are your eyes like human eyes? Do you even see only as men do? Is your life like the life of men, and do your years pass like the days of men, that you should search for faults in me and investigate my sins? Surely you know that I have done no wrong and no one could rescue me from your hand.
Samuel Ward Newark, Katherine Lee Bates arr. Patrick Dupre Quigley
O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law! O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine! O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea

Oh, miserable Iphigenie, Your family is extinguished! You don’t have any kings left; I don’t have any parents left. Intermingle your painful cries With my moaning. You have no kings; I have no family.

We hasten with weak, yet eager steps, O Jesus, o Master, to you for help. You faithfully seek the ill and erring. Ah, hear, how we lift up our voices to beg for help! Let your gracious countenance be joyful to us!

Adeste Fideles
O Come All Ye Faithful
Adeste fideles laeti triumphantes, Venite, venite in Bethlehem. Natum videte Regem angelorum. Venite adoremus Dominum.
Oh, come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant! Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, Born the King of Angels: Oh come let us adore him Christ the Lord.
En grege relicto, Humiles ad cunas, vocati pastores approperant. Et nos ovanti gradu festinemus;
See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle, leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze. We too will thither bend our hearts’ oblations
John Francis Wade arr. Patrick Dupre Quigley
God of God, Light of Light, Lo! He abhors not the Virgin’s womb; Very God, begotten, not created: Oh come let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Sing choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above; Glory to God, Glory in the highest; Oh come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
Coventry Carol
Quem Pastores Laudavere
Lully, lullay, Thou little tiny Child, By, by, lully, lullay, Thou little tiny Child, by, by, lully, lullay.
Quem pastores laudavere, quibus angeli dixere: absit vobis jam timere, natus est rex gloriæ.
Shepherds sang their praises over him Called by angels to adore him: Have no fear, but come before him, The glorious King is now born.
Ad quem reges ambulabant, aurum, thus, myrrham portabant, immolabant hæc sincere Leoni victoriæ;
Eastern sages came to view him, Judah’s conquering Lion knew him, Gold, and myrrh, and incense to him As their tribute offering.
Exultemus cum Maria In coelesti heirarchia Natum promat voce pia Dulci cum melodia.
Let us rejoice with Mary, In union with the Celestial Hierarchy, Singing a pious song to the Newborn, That be sweet in its melody.
Christo regi, Deo nato, per Mariam nobis dato, merito resonet vere ‘Laus, honor, et gloria!’
Of Christ the King, God born, Who was given to us by Mary, We should sing the merit: ‘Honor, praise, and glory be!’
Anonymous, English arr. Paul John Rudoi
O sister too, how may we do For to preserve this day This poor Youngling, for whom we sing By, by, lully, lullay? Herod, the king, in his raging, chargèd he hath this day his men of might, In his own sight, all young children to slay. That woe is me, Poor Child, for Thee! And ever morn and day, For they parting neither say nor sing, By, by, lully, lullay.
Michael Praetorious arr. Susan LaBarr
I Wonder as I Wander
John Jacob Niles arr. Patrick Dupre Quigley I wonder as I wander out under the sky, How Jesus, the Saviour, did come for to die. For poor ornery people like you and like I: I wonder as I wander, Out under the sky.
In Dulci Jubilo
When Mary birthed Jesus, Twas in a cows’ stall, with wisemen and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall, and the promise of ages it then did recall.
In dulci jubilo, Nu singet und seid froh! Unsers Herzens Wonne Leit in praesepio; Und leuchtet wie die Sonne Matris in gremio. Alpha es et O!
Michael Praetorious In sweet rejoicing, now sing and be glad! Our hearts’ joy lies in the manger; And it shines like the sun in the mother’s lap. You are the alpha and omega
If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing: A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing; Or all of God’s angels in heaven to sing, He surely could have had it, ‘cause he was the King! I wonder as I wander out under the sky, How Jesus, the Saviour, did come for to die. For poor ornery people like you and like I: I wonder as I wander, Out under the sky.

Woods in Winter
Away in a Manger
Dominic DiOrio
continued
When Winter winds are piercing chill, And through the hawthorn blows the gale, With solemn feet I tread the hill, That overbrows the lonely vale. O’er the bare upland and away, Through the long reach of desert woods, The embracing sunbeams chastely play, And gladen these deep solitudes. Where twisted round the barren oak, The summer vine in beauty clung, And summer winds the stillness broke, The crystal icicle is hung. Where from their frozen urns, Mute springs pour out the river’s gradual tide Shrilly the skater’s iron rings, And voices fill the woodland side. Alas! How changed from the fair scene, When birds sang out their mellow lay, And winds were soft and woods were green, And the song ceased not with the day. But still wild music is abroad, pale, desert woods! Within your crowd; and gath’ring winds, In hoarse accord, amid the vocal reeds, pipe loud. Chill airs and wintry winds! My ear has grown familiar with your song: I hear it in the opening year, I listen and it cheers me long.
O Magnum Mysterium Morten Lauridsen
O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio. O beata Virgo, cuius viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Jesum Christum. Alleluia.
O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that beasts should see the new-born Lord lying in a manger. O blessed virgin, whose body was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia
Away in a Manger Ola Gjeilo
Away in a manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby wakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.
The Holly and the Ivy Ola Gjeilo
The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown: O, the rising of the sun, And the running of the deer The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a blossom, As white as lily flow’r, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To be our dear Saviour: The holly bears a berry, As red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To do poor sinners good: The holly bears a prickle, As sharp as any thorn, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, On Christmas Day in the morn: The holly bears a bark As bitter as the gall And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ For to redeem us all The holly and the ivy When they are both full grown Of all trees that are in the wood The holly bears the crown
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree Elizabeth Poston
The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit, and always green, The trees of nature fruitless be, Compar’d with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel, By faith I know, but ne’er can tell, The glory which I now can see, In Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure I have dearly bought; I missed of all but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree. I’m wearied with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile; Under the shadow I will be Of Jesus Christ the apple tree. With great delight I make my stay, There’s none shall fright my soul away, Among the sons of men I see, There’s none like Christ the apple tree I’ll sit and eat this fruit divine, It cheers my heart like spiritual wine. And now this fruit is sweet to me, That grows on Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.

Her magnum musical opus, the Ordo virtutum, is a musical morality play pitting the forces of good against those of evil. The celestial virtues, sung by only female voices, aim to rescue the soul Anima from the clutches of the songless, shouting Devil. Broadway and opera director Francesca Zambello creates a new staging for Seraphic Fire as the ensemble celebrates the release of its newest recording of Ordo virtutum. Made possible by Marty Davis and Alix Ritchie

TEXT & TRANSLATIONS | HILDEGARD: ORDO VIRTUTUM Ordo virtutum
Hildegard von Bingen Introit for the Dedication of a Church Terribilis est locus iste: hic domus Dei est, et porta caeli: et vocabitur aula Dei. Quam dilecta tabernacula tua, Domine virtutum! Concupiscit, et deficit anima mea in atria Domini. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, Et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
Awesome is this place: here is the house of God and the gate of heaven: It shall be called the court of God. How beautiful is your tabernacle, Lord of the Virtues! My soul longs and faints for the court of the Lord. Glory to the Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and always, And forever and ever. Amen.
Prologue 1. 2. Virtutes: O antiqui sancti, quid admiramini in nobis? Verbum dei clarescit in forma hominis, et ideo fulgemus cum illo, edificantes membra sui pulcri corporis. 3. Patriarche et Prophete: Nos sumus radices et vos rami, fructus viventis oculi, et nos umbra in illo fuimus.
1. Patriarchs and Prophets: Who are these who fly like clouds and like doves to their windows? Their backs are full of eyes and sparks flash therein like torches. 2. Virtues: You holy ones of old, why do you marvel at us? The Word of God grows bright in the shape of man, and thus we shine with him, building up the limbs of his beautiful body. 3. Patriarchs and Prophets: We are the roots, and you, the boughs, fruits of the living eye, and in that eye we were the shadow.
Part I - The Soul Invokes the Virtues 4. Querela Animarum in carne positarum: O nos peregrine sumus. 22

4. The lament of (a chorus of) embodied Souls: Oh we are strangers here! What have we done, straying to realms of sin? We should have been daughters of the King, but we have fallen into the shadow of sins. Oh living Sun, carry us on your shoulders back to that most just heritage we lost in Adam!
O rex regum, in tuo prelio pugnamus. 5. Felix Anima: O dulcis divinitas, et o suavis vita, in qua perferam vestem preclaram, illud accipiens quod perdidi in prima apparitione, ad te suspiro, et omnes Virtutes invoco. 6. Tu debes in nobis superare diabolum. 11. Anima illa: Succurrite michi, adiuvando, ut possim stare! 12. Certe illud volo abicere! 14. Virtutes: O infelix conscientia,
King of kings, we are fighting in your battle. 5. Anima (happily): Oh sweet divinity, oh gentle life, in which I shall wear a radiant robe, receiving that which I lost in my first manifestation – I sigh for you, and invoke all the Virtues. 6. Virtues: You happy Soul, sweet and divine creation, fashioned in the deep height of the wisdom of God, you show great love. 7. Anima (happily): Oh let me come to you joyfully, that you may give me the kiss of your heart! 8. Virtues: We must fight together with you, royal daughter. 9. Anima, depressed, laments: Oh grievous toil, oh harsh weight that I bear in the dress of this life: it is too grievous for me to fight against my body. 10. Virtues (to Anima): Anima, you that were given your place by the will of God, you instrument of bliss, why are you so tearful in the face of the evil God crushed in a maidenly being? You must overcome the devil in our midst. 11. Anima: Support me, help me to stay firm! 12. Knowledge of God (to Anima): Look at the dress you are wearing, daughter of salvation: be steadfast, and you’ll never fall. 13. Anima (unhappily): I don’t know what to do or where to flee. Woe is me, I cannot complete this dress I have put on. Indeed I want to cast it off! 14. Virtues: Unhappy state of mind,
O misera Anima, quare abscondis faciem tuam coram creatore tuo? 15.
oh poor Anima, why do you hide your face in the presence of your Creator? 15. Knowledge of God: You do not know or see or taste the One who has set you here. 16. Anima: God created the world: l’m doing him no injury, I only want to enjoy it!
Part II - Enter the Devil 17. Strepitus Diaboli ad Animam illam: Fatue, fatue quid prodest tibi laborare? Respice mundum, et amplectetur te magno honore. 18. Virtutes: O plangens vox est hec maximi doloris! Ach, ach, quedam mirabilis victoria in mirabili desiderio dei surrexit, in qua delectatio carnis se latenter abscondit, heu, heu, ubi voluntas crimina nescivit et ubi desiderium hominis lasciviam fugit. Luge, luge ergo in his, Innocentia, que in pudore bono integritatem non amisisti, et que avariciam gutturis antiqui serpentis ibi non devorasti. 19.
17. Devil (shouting to Anlma): What use to you is toiling foolishly, foolishly? Look to the world: it will embrace you with great honor. 18. Virtues: ls this not a plangent voice, of utmost sorrow? Ah, a certain wondrous victory already rose in that Soul, in her wondrous longing for God, in which a sensual delight was secretly hidden, alas, where previously the will had known no guilt, and the desire fled man’s wantonness. Mourn for this, mourn, Innocence, you who lost no perfection in your fair modesty, who did not devour greedily, with the gullet of the serpent of old. 19. Devil: What is this power, as if there were no one but God? I say, whoever wants to follow me and do my will, I’ll give him everything. As for you, Humility, you have nothing that you can give your followers: none of you even know what you are! 20. Humility: My comrades and I know very well that you are the dragon of old who craved to fly higher than the highest one: but God himself hurled you in the abyss. 21. Virtues: As for us, we dwell in the heights.
23. Virtutes: O gloriosa regina, et o suavissima mediatrix, libenter venimus. 24. Humilitas: Ideo, dilectissime filie, teneo vos in regali talamo. 25. Karitas: Ego Karitas, flos amabilis – venite ad me, Virtutes, et perducam vos in candidam lucem floris virge. 26. 32. Virtutes: O dulcissima vocatrix,
22. Humility: I, Humility, queen of the Virtues, say: come to me, you Virtues, and I’ll give you the skill to seek and find the drachma that is lost and to crown her who perseveres blissfully. 23. Virtues: Oh glorious queen, gentlest mediatrix, gladly we come. 24. Humility: Because of this, beloved daughters, I’ll keep your place in the royal wedding-chamber. 25. Charity: I am Charity, the flower of love – come to me, Virtues, and I’ll lead you into the radiant light of the flower of the rod. 26. Virtues: Dearest flower, with ardent longing we run to you. 27. Fear of God: I, Fear of God, can prepare you, blissful daughters, to gaze upon the living God and not die of it. 28. Virtues: Fear, you can help us greatly: we are filled with the longing never to part from you. 29. Devil: Bravo! Bravo! What is this great fear, and this great love? Where is the champion? Where the prizegiver? You don’t even know what you are worshipping! 30. Virtues: But you, you were terrified at the supreme Judge, for, swollen with pride, you were plunged into Gehenna. 31. Obedience: I am Obedience, the shining one – come to me, lovely daughters, and I’ll lead you to your homeland and to the kiss of the King. 32. Virtues: Sweetest summoner,

nos decet in magno studio pervenire ad te. 33. Fides: Ego Fides, speculum vite: venerabiles filie, venite ad me et ostendo vobis fontem salientem. 34. 36. Virtutes: O vivens vita, et o suavis consolatrix, tu mortifera mortis vincis et vidente oculo clausuram celi aperis. 37. Castitas: O Virginitas, in regali thalamo stas. O virgo nobilis, te numquam inveniet umbra in cadente flore! 38. Virtutes: Flos campi cadit vento, pluvia spargit eum. O Virginitas, tu permanes in symphoniis supernorum civium: unde es suavis flos qui numquam aresces. 39. Innocentia: Fugite, oves, spurcicias Diaboli! 40. Virtutes: Has te succurrente fugiemus. 41. Contemptus Mundi: Ego, Contemptus Mundi, sum candor vite. O misera terre peregrinatio in multis laboribus – te dimitto. 42. Virtutes: O gloriosa domina, tu semper habes certamina Christi, o magna virtus, que mundum conculcas, unde etiam victoriose in celo habitas.

it is right for us to come, most eagerly, to you. 33. Faith: I am Faith, the mirror of life: precious daughters, come to me and I shall show you the leaping fountain. 34. Virtues: Serene one, mirror-like, we trust in you: we shall arrive at that fountain through you. 35. Hope: I am the sweet beholder of the living eye, I whom no dissembling torpor can deceive. Darkness, you cannot cloud my gaze! 36. Virtues: Living life, gentle, consoling one, you overcome the deadly shafts of death and with your seeing eye lay heaven’s gate open. 37. Chastity: Maidenhood, you remain within the royal chamber. How sweetly you burn in the King’s embraces, when the Sun blazes through you, never letting your noble flower fall. Gentle maiden, you will never know the shadow over the falling flower! 38. Virtues: The flower in the meadow falls in the wind, the rain splashes it, but you, Maidenhood, remain in the symphonies of heavenly habitants: you are the tender flower that will never grow dry. 39. Innocence: My flock, flee from the Devil’s taints! 40. Virtues: We shall flee them, if you give us aid. 41. World-rejection: I, World-rejection, am the blaze of life. Oh wretched, exiled state on earth, with all your toils – I let you go. Come to me, you Virtues, and we’ll climb up to the fountain of life! 42. Virtues: Glorious lady, you that always fight Christ’s battles, great power that tread the world under your feet, you thereby dwell in heaven, victoriously.
43. Amor Celestis: Ego aurea porta in celo fixa sum: qui per me transit numquam amaram petulantiam in mente sua gustabit. 44. Virtutes: O filia regis, tu semper es in amplexibus quos mundus fugit, O quam suavis est tua dilectio in summo deo! 45. [Disciplina] : Ego sum amatrix simplicium morum qui turpia opera nesciunt; sed semper in regum regem aspicio et amplector eum in honore altissimo. 46. Virtutes: O tu angelica socia, tu es valde ornata in regalibus nuptiis. 47. 48. Virtutes: Tu es in edificatione celestis Jerusalem, florens in candidis liliis. 49. 50. Virtutes: O laudabilis mater peregrinorum, tu semper erigis illos, atque ungis pauperes et debiles. 51. Victoria: Ego Victoria velox et fortis pugnatrix sum – in lapide pugno, serpentem antiquum conculco. 52. Virtutes: O dulcissima bellatrix, in torrente fonte qui absorbuit lupum rapacem -– O gloriosa coronata, nos libenter militamus tecum contra illusorem hunc. 53.
43. Heavenly Love: I am the golden gate that’s fixed in heaven: whoever passes through me will never taste bitter rebelliousness in her mind. 44. Virtues: Royal daughter, you are held fast in the embraces the world shuns: how tender is your love in the highest God! 45. Discipline: I am one who loves innocent ways that know nothing ignoble; I always gaze upon the King of kings and, as my highest honor, I embrace him. 46. Virtues: Angelic comrade, how comely you are in the royal nuptials! 47. Modesty: I cover over, drive away or tread down all the filths of the Devil. 48. Virtues: Yours is a part in the building of heavenly Jerusalem, flowering among shining lilies. 49. Mercy: How bitter in human minds is the harshness that does not soften and mercifully ease pain! I want to reach out my hand to all who suffer. 50. Virtues: Matchless mother of exiles, you are always raising them up and anointing the poor and the weak. 51. Victory: I am Victory, the swift, brave champion – I fight with a stone, I tread the age-old serpent down. 52. Virtues: Oh gentlest warrior, in the scorching fountain that swallowed up the voracious wolf – glorious, crowned one, how gladly we’ll fight against that trickster, at your side! 53. Discretion: I am Discretion, light and moderator of all creatures, the impartiality of God, that Adam drove away by acting wantonly.
57. [Humilitas]: O filie Israhel, sub arbore suscitavit vos deus, unde in hoc tempore recordamini plantationis sue. Gaudete ergo, filie Syon!
54. Virtues: Fairest mother, how sweet you are, how gentle – in you no one can be confounded. 55. Patience: I am the pillar that can never be made to yield, as my foundation is in God. 56. Virtues: You that stay firm in the rocky cavern, you are the glorious warrior who endures all. 57. Humility: Daughters of Israel, God raised you from beneath the tree, so now remember how it was planted. Therefore rejoice, daughters of Jerusalem.
Part III - The Soul Returns 58. Virtutes: Heu, heu, nos Virtutes plangamus et lugeamus, quia ovis domini fugit vitam! 59. 62. Virtutes: Noli timere nec fugere, quia pastor bonus querit in te perditam ovem suam. 63. Anima illa: Nunc est michi necesse ut suscipiatis me, quoniam in vulneribus feteo quibus antiqus serpens me contaminavit. 64. Virtutes: Curre ad nos, et sequere vestigia illa in quibus numquam cades in societate nostra,
58. Virtues: Alas, alas, let us lament and mourn, because our master’s sheep has fled from life! 59. Anima (laments, penitent and calling upon the Virtues): You royal Virtues, how graceful, how flashing-bright you look in the highest Sun, and how delectable is your home, and so, what woe is mine that I fled from you! 60. Virtues: You who escaped, come, come to us, and God will take you back. 61. Anima: Ah, but a burning sweetness swallowed me up in sins, so I did not dare come in. 62. Virtues: Don’t be afraid or run away: the good Shepherd is searching for his lost sheep – it is you. 63. Anima: Now I need your help to gather me up – I stink of the wounds that the age-old serpent has made gangrenous 64. Virtues: Run back to us, retrace those steps where you’ll never falter, in our company:
et deus curabit te. 65. Penitens Anima ad Virtutes: Ego peccator qui fugi vitam: plenus ulceribus veniam ad vos, ut prebeatis michi scutum redemptionis. O tu omnis milicia regine, et o vos, candida lilia ipsius, cum rosea purpura, inclinate vos ad me, quia peregrina a vobis exulavi, et adiuvate me, ut in sanguine filii dei possim surgere. 66. Virtutes: O Anima fugitiva, esto robusta, et indue te arma lucis. 67. Anima illa: Et o vera medicina, Humilitas, prebe michi auxilium, quia superbia in multis viciis fregit me, multas cicatrices michi imponens. Nunc fugio ad te, et ideo suscipe me. 68. Humilitas: O omnes Virtutes, suscipite lugentem peccatorem, in suis cicatricibus, propter vulnera Christi, et perducite eum ad me. 69. Virtutes: Volumus te reducere et nolumus te deserere, et omnis celestis milicia gaudet super te – ergo decet nos in symphonia sonare. 70. Humilitas: O misera filia, volo te amplecti, quia magnus medicus dura et amara vulnera propter te passus est. 71.
God will heal you. 65. Anima (penitently, to the Virtues): I am the sinner who fled from life: riddled with sores I’ll come to you – you can offer me redemption’s shield. All of you, warriors of Queen Humility, her white lilies and her crimson roses, stoop to me, who exiled myself from you like a stranger, and help me, that in the blood of the Son of God I may arise. 66. Virtues: Fugitive Anima, now be strong: put on the armor of light. 67. Anima: And you, true medicine, Humility, grant me your help, for pride has broken me in many vices, inflicting many scars on me. Now I’m escaping to you – so take me up! 68. Humility: All you Virtues, lift up this mournful sinner, with all her scars, for the sake of Christ’s wounds, and bring her to me. 69. Virtues: We want to bring you back – we shan’t desert you, the whole of heaven’s host will have joy in you: thus it is right for us now to play our symphony. 70. Humility: Oh unhappy daughter, I want to embrace you: the great surgeon has suffered harsh and bitter wounds for your sake. 71. Virtues: Living fountain, how great is your sweetness, you did not reject the gaze of these upon you – no, acutely you foresaw how you could avert them from the fall the angels fell, they who thought they possessed a power which no law allows to be like that. Rejoice then, daughter of Jerusalem, SEASON 2021-2022

Penitens Anima: Ego omnes vias meas malas esse cognovi, et ideo fugi a te. Modo autem, o illusor, pugno contra te. 74. [Anima illa]: Inde tu, o regina Humilitas, tuo medicamine adiuva me! 75. 72. Devil: Who are you? Where are you coming from? You were in my embrace, I led you out. Yet now you are going back, defying me – but I shall fight you and bring you down! 73. Anima (penitently): I recognised that all my ways were wicked, so I fled you. But now, you trickster, I’ll fight you face to face. 74. Anima: Queen Humility, come with your medicine, give me aid! 75. Humility (to Victory): Victory, you who once conquered this creature in the heavens, run now, with all your soldiery, and all of you bind this Fiend! 76. Victory (to the Virtues): Bravest and most glorious warriors, come, help me to vanquish this deceitful one! 77. Virtues: Oh sweetest warrior, in the scorching fountain that swallowed up the voracious wolf – glorious, crowned one, how gladly we’ll fight against that trickster, at your side! 78. Humility: Bind him then, you shining Virtues! 79. Virtues: Queen of us all, we obey – we’ll carry out your orders totally. 80. Victory: Comrades, rejoice: the age-old snake is bound! 81. Virtues: Praise be to you, Christ, King of the angels! 82. Chastity: In the mind of the Highest, Satan, I trod on your head,
et in virginea forma dulce miraculum colui, ubi filius dei venit in mundum; unde deiectus es in omnibus spoliis tuis, et nunc gaudeant omnes qui habitant in celis, quia venter tuus confusus est. 83. Diabolus: Tu nescis quid colis, quia venter tuus vacuus est pulcra forma de viro sumpta ubi transis preceptum quod deus in suavi copula precepit; unde nescis quid sis! 84.
and in a virgin form I nurtured a sweet miracle when the Son of God came into the world; therefore you are laid low, with all your plunder; and now let all who dwell in heaven rejoice, because your belly has been confounded. 83. Devil: You don’t know what you are nurturing, for your belly is devoid of the beautiful form that woman receives from man; in this you transgress the command that God enjoined in the sweet act of love; so you don’t even know what you are! 84. Chastity: How can what you say affect me? Even your suggestion smirches it with foulness. I did bring forth a man, who gathers up mankind to himself, against you, through his nativity. 85. Virtues: Who are you, God, who held such great counsel in yourself, a counsel that destroyed the draught of hell in publicans and sinners, who now shine in paradisal goodness! Praise to you, King, for this!
Epilogue 86. 87.
86. Virtues: Almighty Father, from you flowed a fountain in fiery love: guide your children into a fair wind, sailing the waters, so that we too may steer them in this way into the heavenly Jerusalem. 87. Virtues and Souls: In the beginning all creation was verdant, flowers blossomed in the midst of it; later, greenness sank away. And the champion saw this and said: “I know it, but the golden number is not yet full. You then, behold me, mirror of your fatherhood: in my body I am suffering exhaustion, even my little ones faint. Now remember that the fullness which was made in the beginning
et tunc in te habuisti quod oculus tuus numquam cederet usque dum corpus meum videres plenum gemmarum. Nam me fatigat quod omnia membra mea inirrisionem vadunt.
need not have grown dry, and that then you resolved that your eye would never fail until you saw my body full of jewels. For it wearies me that all my limbs are exposed to mockery:
Pater, vide, vulnera mea tibi ostendo. Ergo nunc, omnes homines, genua vestra ad patrem vestrum flectite, ut vobis manum suam porrigat.
Father, behold, I am showing you my wounds.” So now, all you people, bend your knees to the Father, that he may reach you his hand.

Hildegard von Bingen Stage Director Francesca Zambello Two Avant-Garde Women: An Artistic Pair Unleashing Musical Magic “To say that Hildegard was ahead of her time is the biggest understatement ever.” Amanda Crider, alto
“It’s an incredible honor that Francesca Zambello is coming to direct Hildegard for us. She is a perfect fit. When I proposed the idea to her, she quickly said yes. Having a professional director of her caliber is a thrilling first for Seraphic Fire. I can’t wait to see the magic she creates.” Patrick Dupre Quigley In January, under the artistic direction of the much-celebrated Director Francesca Zambello, Seraphic Fire is excited to present four performances of Hildegard von Bingen: Ordo virtutum. This dramatic play, often referred to as the precursor to modern opera, was composed by Hildegard c. 1151 and specifically intended to be performed by the women of her convent. The music portrays a wandering soul struggling between the powers of good and evil. It certainly has the feel of a modern-day opera with a wealth of drama that explodes in the music. Hildegard was awarded tremendous respect during her life and that this music is the only medieval musical drama surviving with an attribution for both the music and the text is testament to that fact. 28

III, ISSUE I
Born to a noble family in 1098, Hildegard of Bingen began to experience religious visions even as a child. She would emerge as one of the leading thinkers of that period, making significant contributions to philosophy, theology, music, and sciences. She corresponded with Popes and kings, a remarkable involvement for a woman in that era.
“To say that Hildegard was ahead of her time is the biggest understatement ever.” Amanda Crider, alto Fast forward to the 21st century where Francesca Zambello has excitedly accepted the challenge of fashioning a descriptive scenario and unfolding the storyline for this ancient Latin dramatic work. Like Hildegard, Zambello’s creative, trail-blazing spirit, and leadership in her profession are duly recognized. An internationally-renowned theatre and opera director, Zambello is the Artistic and General Director of Glimmerglass Festival and the Artistic Director for Washington National Opera. Her love of the creative arts was nurtured growing up in the theatre with a mother
and father who were actors. “Being around theatre at an early age, I worked my way up from production assistant starting with my summers in high school. I always knew I wanted to be a director. I was interested in the big picture, the big story,” relates Zambello. Zambello’s musical talents were fostered by her grandmother, a concert pianist who taught her granddaughter regular lessons. She not only learned piano but picked up a variety of instruments in school including flute and bass clarinet. As she became more focused in her studies, the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center proved to be a learning ground where Zambello said she “would bury her head in scores and recordings. In a sense, that was my training.” Going back to Europe after school, Zambello’s first “job” was as an intern in Germany at an opera house. Today, her directing career features productions at premiere houses around the world: Met Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Bolshoi, La Fenice, Royal Albert Hall, Paris Opera, Covent Gardens, Munich Staatsoper, Houston Opera House, San Francisco Opera; the list goes on. Her talents expanded into BBC television and onto Broadway with shows such as The Little Mermaid. Fluent in French, Italian, Russian, and German, Zambello finds herself drawn to some of the classical directors in Europe for her inspiration. It makes perfect sense that she has received prestigious awards from the Italian, Russian, and French governments for her positive contributions and promotion of those cultures.
“I was the first woman to direct at many theatres,” remarks Zambello. “Even now, women General Directors, there are not very many of us. I worked very hard. It’s hard work and dedication, a little bit of talent and being in the right place at the right time. It’s really important to have a couple of people who believe in you.”
as Hildegard intended it to be – a drama. It’s a stunning piece of music. Hildegard had no orchestra and neither will we.”
“First and foremost, we are going to have to be off book. Everything will be memorized; no instruments and no auditory clues. You’re completely on your own. I love, love, love the idea of bringing staging to these works. If you are acting while singing, you will feel it and sing it differently. Francesca is a genius, and I can’t wait to work with her. This is really unprecedented to find singers of this caliber paired with a world-class director performing Ordo virtutum. It just doesn’t exist.” Luthien Brackett, alto In January, Seraphic Fire patrons will have the rare opportunity to see the talents of these two dynamic and creative female artists, albeit 1,000 years apart, meld together to create musical magic. Hildegard was an extraordinary and revered personality in her time, composing at least 70 pieces of music, preaching from the pulpit, creating her own language, and writing texts on botany and holistic medicine. Her legacy is undeniable. Likewise, Francesca Zambello has been a tenacious innovator throughout her career, not only as a creative virtuoso, but also leading the way for female artists to excel in their artistic career paths. By directing Ordo virtutum, she once again seeks to expand the realm of her audience, drawing them into the world of Hildegard von Bingen and her convent of nuns where they enact the age-old battle between human virtue and the devil’s temptation.
“As a director, you want to take on all types of genres. We are all storytellers; everybody, in all aspects of this profession.” Francesca Zambello
Zambello approaches her directing challenges from the audience perspective: “What is the way that I am going to build the world that the story lives in? How is the space going to help tell and clarify the story? You have to create a visual space that holds the story,” says Zambello. “I feel like I learned a lot from great directors of film. Film chooses where you look. We, the director, through lighting, scenery and production values create where you look. You want the performers to pop.” Patrick Dupre Quigley, Seraphic Fire’s co-founder and artistic director, had discussed Hildegard with Zambello a year ago and she expressed her intrigue with the Saint and her music. Once Quigley had a vision for the joint CD release and Seraphic Fire performance in 2022, he offered Zambello the opportunity to direct and was delighted with her quick acceptance. “There’s a different stage every night,” described Quigley. “There’s no typical theatre staff or costume designers. We wanted a production that could travel around. It’s a set of challenges that also intrigued Zambello. She is building the space dramatically with the staging rather than a set. Francesca is coming in to realize the full potential of the music. I am getting out of the way as much as possible. This is not a piece that is meant to be conducted. We are performing it
“This music is difficult in a very specific way. We all have to sing in unison for much of the piece. It requires intense concentration; like walking a tightrope all together holding hands. It’s super exhilarating. Adding staging and movement will be a great challenge; like doing a trust fall at the same time. It will take what was already a special experience and add 100 more layers of depth and understanding to the story.” Amanda Crider, alto SEASON 2021-2022

MUSIC EDUCATION SERAPHIC FIRE YOUTH INITIATIVE Seraphic Fire’s Youth Initiative (SFYI), in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the University of Miami (UM), and Florida International University (FIU), is a multi-pronged music education program serving elementary, middle, and high school students in some of South Florida’s most challenged communities. The first element is three in-school workshops, led by a quartet of Seraphic Fire artists, that offer an interactive approach to music education and choral performance for eight Title I elementary schools. During these workshops, students learn music theory, vocal pedagogy fundamentals, and elements of music history through interactive exercises with Seraphic Fire artists. The second program element, the Choral Education Residency (CER), is a two-year program now operating at two partner schools. A UM Frost School of Music doctoral student teacher and the schools’ music specialists present weekly vocal pedagogy instruction to two classes selected from the 3rd-5th grades at each school. In December and April of each season, Seraphic Fire performs a side-by-side concert with students from the CER program. As part of the third SFYI element, secondary students are invited to participate in a one-day Master Class working side by side with Seraphic Fire musicians in intensive sectionals, a joint rehearsal, and a concert with the Seraphic Fire ensemble. IMPORTANT UPDATES: Plans are underway to present our first High School Master Class, which will be held in February 2022 at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at FIU. Schools have applied and been accepted, and we look forward to this expansion as we continue to guide our secondary students in their quest for an opportunity to someday sing in ensembles such as Seraphic Fire. SFYI is pleased to announce a developing partnership with the school systems of Broward and Collier (Naples) counties. We will begin with introductory education concerts in May 2022, and eventually expand the program to present our workshops to selected Title I schools in both school systems. It has long been a vision of the Youth Initiative to expand past the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Thank you to all who saw this vision and contributed financially to make this first step happen.
PROFESSIONAL CHORAL INSTITUTE Seraphic Fire’s GRAMMY® nominated Professional Choral Institute at Aspen Music Festival and School is a 2-week summer program designed to prepare emerging singers to work in the growing industry of professional ensemble singing. OUR VOICES & YOU by Patrick Dupre Quigley
On May 11, 2021, in Coral Gables, Seraphic Fire made music in person for the first time in 14 months. As an organization dedicated to the live performance of classical vocal music, COVID-19 took a shot at the heart of our raison d’être. Everything about our musical lives had changed. Concerts became music videos. Classroom visits turned into virtual YouTube workshops. Supporters and fans watched on their computers, tablets, and smartphones. Artists learned how to make music in tandem with headphones, an Amazon microphone, and a click-track. Staff transformed their homes into ensemble offices. But May 11, 2021 would be different. The previous seven days spent in solo quarantine, we gathered on a breezy day in a Coral Gables rehearsal room. As we intoned Mozart and Monteverdi, deeply-missed physical feelings returned. Chords locked, fingers tingled, hair stood on end. We felt mixed emotions of joy, happiness, anxiety. The feeling of making music together in a room was overwhelming; yet, something was missing. Music is first and foremost physics. Sound gets to our eardrums through our bodies. We vibrate sympathetically to music. There are no spectators at concerts: Humans conduct sound. What was missing on May 11 was you. Your presence changes the music, changes the room, the energy, the sound. Without you in the room, we are sympathetically vibrating objects. With you in the room, we are Seraphic Fire.
Thank you for being an audience member, a patron, a Board member, a fan, a supporter, and a friend. You give Seraphic Fire its voice. We are grateful to you as our comrades in this endeavor, and look forward to finally making music together with you again.

FINANCIALS & STATISTICS Financial planning became uniquely challenging during the 2020-21 Season. Facing unpredictable revenues, we started by assuming a 30% reduction in the organization’s overall budget. Tectonic shifts in reliable revenue streams, coupled with the unknown expenses of producing and presenting our artistic and education programs in new and untested formats, made financial forecasting an art in and of itself. The Board’s Finance Committee worked closely with the administration to chart a financial path that would ensure compensation of our artists, retention of all administrative positions, and the flexibility to experiment with and produce high-quality digital content, all while leaving the organization with a comfortable cushion to minimize risk and emerge with an even healthier balance sheet.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT LAURA CALZOLARI
Almost 20 years ago, I attended a concert of Bach’s Mass in B minor that Patrick Quigley organized and conducted at Church of the Epiphany where he was serving as Music Director. The performance was spectacular. I felt – as did many others – that a new musical presence had arrived to enrich the classical music scene in Miami. And it continues to do so today. I am proud to be part of the Seraphic Fire family and happy to volunteer for fundraising projects and especially as a host to several of Seraphic Fire’s marvelous women vocalists. I look forward to the upcoming season.
