NORTHERN LIGHTS: MUSIC OF SCANDINAVIA
Seraphic Fire brings together professional vocal and instrumental artists from around the country to perform repertoire ranging from medieval chant and Baroque masterpieces to commissions by leading living composers. The Seraphic Fire media catalog contains 16 releases. In 2012, two of the ensemble’s recordings, Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem and A Seraphic Fire Christmas, were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards.

Seraphic Fire’s artistic accomplishments also have translated to partnerships with The Cleveland Orchestra and New World Symphony, among others. At the forefront of Seraphic Fire’s mission is a commitment to community well-being and musician advancement through educational programs for South Florida’s underserved elementary students, as well as rising music professionals at University of Miami, Florida International University, UCLA, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. 5

Patrick Dupré Quigley is the Founder and Artistic Director of Seraphic Fire. He has guest conducted San Francisco Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra, Utah Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, and New World Symphony, among others. This season, Quigley debuts with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and New Jersey Symphony. In his 18 years as Artistic Director, Seraphic Fire has grown to present an annual, multi-venue subscription concert series. Seraphic Fire’s multiple educational outreach programs – including the Seraphic Fire Youth Initiative, Seraphic FireUCLA Ensemble Artist Program, and the Professional Choral Institute at the Aspen Music Festival – reach thousands of students, from elementary to graduate school. Quigley holds a master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, and has pursued further professional studies at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s Fundraising School. Seraphic Fire presents a concert of musical highlights from past seasons, including music that Vivaldi wrote for the famed Ospedale della Pietà, Monteverdi’s ravishing Selva Morale et Spirituale, and the joyous and rhythmic music of the Baroque traditions of Cuba, Peru, and Mexico. A highlight of this concert will be the world premiere of Alvaro Bermudez’s Danzas del Silencio for chorus and guitar, played by the composer.

Diamond has presented more than 400 solo vocal performances in works by Cavalli, Monteverdi, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Rossini, Berlioz, Orff, Bartok, Janacek and Britten with symphony orchestras and opera companies across North America and Europe. He completed his Bachelor of Music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ in 1991. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music. Diamond is assistant professor of voice at Samford University in Birmingham, AL.

Ragnar Bohlin is renowned as one of the leading choral conductors of the world. He was named Director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus in 2007, conducting them regularly in such pieces as Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the B Minor Mass and preparing this ensemble for performances under internationally renowned conductors. His outstanding work has been recognized with three GRAMMY® Awards for Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony including Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance of 2009.
James K. Bass, three-time GRAMMY® nominated conductor and singer, currently serves as the Director of Choral Studies at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA and is the Artistic Director of the Long Beach Camerata Singers. He has prepared choirs for some of the most important conductors of our time including Sir Colin Davis, Sir David Willcocks, Michael Tilson Thomas, Gerard Schwarz, Giancarlo Guerrero, and Robert Shaw among others. He was selected by the master conductor of the Amsterdam Baroque Soloists, Ton Koopman, to be one of only 20 singers for a presentation of Cantatas by J.S. Bach at Carnegie Hall. He has appeared as a soloist on a GRAMMY® nominated recording with the Austin, TX based choir Conspirare and has performed with numerous professional vocal ensembles, orchestras, and festivals.
Melissa D’Albora began her music studies at the age of seven on the piano. At 14, she began playing viola. Since her early studies on viola, she has performed many works ranging from Bach Cello Suites to Harbison’s Mirabai Songs. D’Albora’s works have been performed along the East Coast. One of her later performances was her work I Am Waiting in Coral Gables, Florida on February 24, 2018. Since January 2018, she has received six commissions. Three commissions were educational from the Frost Preparatory Program, Walter C. Young Middle School, and Coral Gables Senior High School. The most recent commission is Perception of Sound for violinist Kendall Grady’s string quartet.

Mr. Bohlin studied conducting with Jorma Panula and the legendary choir director, Eric Ericson, piano with Peter Feuchtwanger in London on a British Council scholarship, and singing with the great Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda. He holds a master’s degree in organ and conducting and a degree in conducting from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Mr. Bohlin in on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has taught at the Royal Academy in Stockholm and was Visiting Professor at Indiana University, Bloomington in 2008. In 2013 he was awarded the Swedish American Chambers of Commerce Cultural Award.

Bass also serves as Associate Conductor for Seraphic Fire and serves as Associate Program Director and faculty for the Professional Choral Institute at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Bass received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami, where he was a doctoral fellow and was a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy.

D’Albora holds two Bachelor of Music degrees in viola performance and composition from the University of Connecticut. She received her Master in Music Composition at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Her composition mentors have been Dr. Kenneth Fuchs, Dr. Augusta Read Thomas, Dr. Christopher Theofanidis, and Dr. Dorothy Hindman. She is currently studying with Dr. Mason while earning her D.M.A. in Composition at the Frost School of Music.

a 5-minute work that Seraphic Fire will premiere during season subscription concerts. This student works closely with Seraphic Fire Associate Conductor James K. Bass throughout the season and regularly attends rehearsals and performances in preparation for the premiere. The residency includes composition workshops and routine guidance from Seraphic Fire artists and conductors.
CAT BENNETT WALLING Cat Bennett Walling is a choral educator, voice teacher, and Ph.D. candidate in Music Education at the University of Miami. As an educator, she has taught vocal methods and the undergraduate student teaching seminar on campus. In the wider community, she has supervised student music teachers and taught choral music to underserved youth in Little Havana through Shalala MusicReach. Over the past 10 years, Cat has taught and studied music in many countries around the world. She has taught K – 12 general and choral music in Japan and Thailand and has worked as a volunteer music teacher in Honduras and South Africa. She has studied Hindustani Classical voice in India, choral music in South Africa, Tembang in Indonesia and Ewe music in Ghana. Cat has a B.M. in music education from Ithaca College and a M.M. in music education from Indiana University, where she assistant directed the International Vocal Ensemble for two years.
I, ISSUE III
Seraphic Fire’s Youth Initiative, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the University of Miami, and Florida International University, is a free music education program serving elementary, middle, and high school students in some of Miami-Dade County’s most challenged communities. During multiple workshops throughout the school year, elementary students learn music theory, vocal pedagogy fundamentals, and elements of music history through interactive exercises with Seraphic Fire artists. In December and April of each season, Seraphic Fire performs a side-by-side concert with students from one of our partner elementary schools. These students receive weekly instruction through tandem work with the music specialist and an education liaison from one of the areas advanced degree music education programs. The elementary students perform pre-determined selections with the Seraphic Fire ensemble for approximately 1,200 pupils from the MiamiDade County public schools. Secondary students are invited to participate in a one day masterclass working side-by-side with Seraphic Fire musicians in intensive sectionals, a joint rehearsal, and then performing in a concert with the Seraphic Fire ensemble that is open to the public free of charge.

SERAPHIC FIRE SETS THE STAGE FOR A DECADE OF GROWTH
A new strategic plan will guide the organization’s path forward, setting the stage for broader impact within the choral community. From nationwide performances and collaborations to educational endeavors and an endowment, the last 18 years have seen significant growth for Seraphic Fire. But as the organization enters the next decade, it is at a critical juncture – one that comes with an opportunity to capitalize on the momentum it has built to move into the future in a resounding way. That is why Seraphic Fire is approaching the next 10 years with renewed enthusiasm and energy as it works to set standards for choral music. Guided by the creation of a first-ever strategic plan, efforts will focus specifically on transformations within four areas: musical experiences, engagement through education, recording and documentation, and artist and organizational development. “We’ve taken a step back to look at the organization holistically and to determine how we can continue to elevate not only Seraphic Fire as a professional ensemble, but the choral industry as a whole,” said Dr. Thomas C. Boyd, Board Chair. “The result is a plan that will enable us to achieve our vision to become the exemplar of quality for, and contribution to, professional choral art in North America.”
As the organization continues to seek new opportunities to broaden the positive impact Seraphic Fire has on neighboring communities, efforts will also focus on expanding existing educational programs. Locally, Seraphic Fire will work to engage more South Florida schools and universities through workshops, masterclasses, and residencies. Nationally, the Professional Choral Institute at Aspen Music Festival and School will expand to allow for additional paths of study for a more diverse pool of participants. Both initiatives will create greater awareness of Seraphic Fire among future leaders in the choral field. RECORDING & DOCUMENTATION – Create a body of work that defines and advances professional choral music. Developing and executing a process for the recording and documentation of Seraphic Fire’s music will help expand not only the life of its performances, but also their reach. Through annual and archival recording projects, the organization will be able to increase its audience base, gain radio play, and ultimately generate more awareness across the country.
