Experience a magical holiday musical journey inspired by Clement Clarke Moore’s ’Twas the Night Before Christmas
By James K. Bass
This year’s holiday program is built around a very famous poem: A Visit From St. Nicholas, typically referred to as ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. The verses will be woven throughout the program.
“’Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” Awaiting St. Nicholas’ arrival, the children portray hopeful eagerness and anticipation. That’s what we are trying to capture in this program.
The poem evokes images of “sugar plums dancing in their heads.” We all know that Tchaikovsky wrote Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. There’s a choral arrangement of that which I’m going to reprise.
One of my absolute favorites is Only in Sleep by Ēriks Ešenvalds, and it has a stunningly beautiful soprano solo. This Latvian work takes us through memories of childhood: “it’s only in sleep that I remember being there on the landing of the stairs, and there’s my friend with her little hair and ponytails, and there’s the toys.” We will all go through this memory together, and it feels much like Christmas morning. At the very end, the soloist says, “Only in sleep, you know, I have these things. Wait a minute, am I a child?” Maybe this journey is not a dream at all.
There are new works by Audrey Snyder, The Christmas Processional, Sally Beamish’s In the Stillness, and June Collin’s The Quiet Heart. We’ve never sung Jolly Old St. Nicholas, but he appears on the roof of the house in the poem, so our singers will delight you with this rendition.
Always a favorite, Seraphic Fire’s holiday concert is the perfect way to start the season. Hopefully, you will love this new “twist.”
“Precious Lord, take my hand; lead me on, help me stand.” Thomas Dorsey, father of American Gospel, revolutionized music by setting these remarkable words to a haunting tune you know today. From Amazing Grace to up-tempo classics, the internationally celebrated Jason Max Ferdinand leads the singers of Seraphic Fire in this joyous and electrifying program.

John Francis Wade (1711-1786)
Arr. Patrick Quigley (b. 1977)
Adeste fideles, laeti triumphantes; Venite, venite in Bethlehem; Natum videte regem angelorum. Venite, adoremus Dominum. En grege relicto, humiles ad cunas, vocatis pastores approperant. Et nos ovanti gradu festinemus. Venite, adoremus Dominum.
A boy is born in Bethlehem, alleluia: And joy is in Jerusalem, alleluia, alleluia.

Our inmost hearts rejoice; Christ is born and we adore him With new and joyful song.
Though in a manger bed he lies, He reigns until the end of time

We praise the Holy Trinity, Let us give thanks to God today
REFRAIN
As we regard this joyful birth, We bless the Lord who came to earth
REFRAIN
O Come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, Come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come, and behold Him, born the King of Angels.
O Come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. And leaving their flocks, humbly The shepherds approach his cradle. And we hurry to sing before his throne. O Come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
Sally Beamish (b. 1956)
In the stillness of a church
Where candles glow, In the softness of a fall
Of fresh white snow, In the brightness of the stars
That shine this night, In the calmness of a pool
Of healing light, In the clearness of a choir
That softly sings, In the oneness of a hush Of angels’ wings, In the mildness of a night By stable bare, In the quietness of a lull, Near cradle fair, There’s patience as we wait For a new morn, And the presence of a child Soon to be born.
- Katrina Shepherd
This is the truth sent from above
R. Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
This is the truth sent from above, The truth of God, the God of love, Therefore, don’t turn me from the door, But hearken all, both rich and poor.
The first thing that I will relate That God at first did man create; The next thing which to you I tell Woman was made with him to dwell.
Thus we were heirs to endless woes, Till God the Lord did interpose; And so a promise soon did run That he’d redeem us by his Son.
And at this season of the year Our blest Redeemer did appear, And here did live, and here did preach, And many thousands he did teach.
Thus he in love to us behaved, To show us how we must be saved; And if you want to know the way, Be pleased to hear what he did say.
’Twas in the stillness of the night that Jesus came; No blare of trumpets heralded his birth Nor broke the wonted silence of the earth; No clang of bells or blatant hue and cry
Disturbed the calm beneath the Bethlehem sky. When Jesus came ’twas night, And the world was still.
’Tis to the quiet heart he loves to come: Not often ’midst the tumult of the day, When we can find small time to think or pray, Or when, confused by agitating care, We find no secret place for him to share. We must be still if we his voice would hear.
’Tis to the quiet heart he loves to come.
Arr. Charles Wood (1866-1926)
Once, as I remember, At the time of Yule, After mid-December, When it bloweth cool, I o’erheard a Mother Was a-singing, ‘Sweet Jesu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, Lu-lay la-lu.’
Near as man was able, On my knee fell I, in the Bethlem stable Where the Babe did lie, And the Virgin-mother Was a-singing, ‘Sweet Jesu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, Lu-lay la-lu.’
Ox and ass around him, Courtier-like, did stand: Fair white linen bound him, Spun by Mary’s hand, While the Virgin mother Was a-singing ‘Sweet Jesu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, Lu-lay la-lu.’
Ev’r among and o’er us Angelquire ‘gan sing Antiphons in chorus To the newborn King. Then the Virgin mother Fell a-singing ‘Sweet Jesu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, La-lullay-lu, Lu-lay la-lu.’
O Magnum Mysterium
Owain Park (b.1993)
O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Jesum Christum. Alleluia!
O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Jesus Christ the Lord. Alleluia!
Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
James Lord Pierpont (1833-1893)
Jolly old Saint Nicholas, Lean your ear this way! Don’t you tell a single soul What I’m gonna say; Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now, you dear old man, Whisper what you’ll bring to me; Tell me if you can.
When the clock is striking twelve, When I’m fast asleep, Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you’ll creep; All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row; Mine will be the strongest one, You’ll be sure to know.
Johnny wants a pair of skates; Susy wants a dolly; Nelly wants a storybook; She thinks dolls are folly; As for me, my little brain Isn’t very bright; Choose for me, old Santa Claus, What you think is right.
The First Nowell
David Willcocks (1919-2015)
Arr. Patrick Quigley (b. 1977)
The first Nowell the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went: Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
This start drew nigh to the north-west; O’er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay: Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
Then entered in those wise men three, Full reverently upon their knee, And offered there in His presence Their Gold and myrrh and frankincense Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, and with his blood man-kind hath bought: Nowell, born is the King of Israel!
Carol of the Bells
Mykola Leontovich (1877-1921)
Arr. Peter J. Wilhousky (1902-1978)
Hark! how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say, “Throw cares away.”
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old Meek and the bold.
Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear Words of good cheer
From ev’rywhere Filling the air.
Oh how they pound, Raising the sound, O’er hill and dale, Telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
While people sing Songs of good cheer Christmas is here!
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas. Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas.
On, on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone
To ev’ry home.
Ding, dong, ding, dong. Bohm!
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987)
The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit, and always green: The trees of nature fruitless be Compar’d with Christ the apple tree.
His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell, The glory which I now can see In Jesus Christ the apple tree.
For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree.
I’m wearied with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be, Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.
Arr. Lowell Mason (1792-1872)
Joy to the world; the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let ev’ry heart prepare him room, And heav’n and nature sing.
Joy to the world: the Saviour reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains, Repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace; And makes the nations prove, The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love.
Ēriks Ešenvalds (b. 1977)
Only in sleep I see their faces, Children I played with when I was a child, Louise comes back with her brown hair braided, Annie with ringlets warm and wild.
Only in sleep Time is forgotten— What may have come to them, who can know? Yet we played last night as long ago, And the doll-house stood at the turn of the stair.
The years had not sharpened their smooth round faces, I met their eyes and found them mild. Do they, too, dream of me, I wonder, And for them am I too a child?
Sleep My Pretty One, Sleep
Joseph Phibbs (b. 1974)
Lullaby, lullaby; Sleep my pretty one sleep, And I shall sing a lullaby. Close your eyes, close your eyes; Sleep my pretty one sleep, And I shall sing a lullaby. Sleep my child, sleep my child; Sleep my pretty one sleep, And I shall sing a lullaby.
Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863)
Arr. Quigley
Stille Nach! Heilige Nacht! Alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute heilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lokkigten Haar, Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright ‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from Heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia; Christ the Saviour is born.
