Welcome to Season 24
Dear Friends,
It is a great honor and joy to welcome you to Season 24 of Seraphic Fire. Having sung with and conducted this remarkable ensemble for many years as Associate Conductor, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to step into the role of Artistic Director and continue the extraordinary work that has shaped Seraphic Fire for more than two decades. This ensemble has long stood for artistic excellence, curiosity, and heartfelt connection, and I look forward to building on that legacy together.
Our opening program celebrates the start of the season with works never before performed for our home audiences, including Vaughan Williams’ radiant Serenade to Music, Eric Whitacre’s powerful When David Heard, and a dialogue across centuries between Buxtehude’s Ad Manus and Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands.
Throughout the season, we explore the remarkable breadth of choral music. Blue Notes pairs the ensemble with a jazz combo to celebrate classics made famous by Nat King Cole, Etta James, and Cole Porter. Our beloved candlelit holiday concerts return with Medieval and Renaissance carols from across Europe. In January, the tenors and basses take center stage in a program of music for men’s voices, featuring Danny Boy, Poulenc’s Laudes de Saint Antoine de Padoue, and Vaughan Williams’ Loch Lomond.
February honors Philip Glass as he approaches his 90th birthday alongside luminous works by Ola Gjeilo, Arvo Pärt, and Henryk Górecki. In March, American Poets celebrates the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary through choral settings of texts by Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr. We close the season with the vibrant rhythms of Latin America, featuring Ariel Ramírez’s beloved Misa Criolla and music by Miami composers Álvaro Bermúdez and Sydney Guillaume.
Seraphic Fire has been a cornerstone of choral excellence for more than 20 years, and I am honored to continue that legacy. Thank you for being part of this community—I look forward to sharing this season with you.

Season 24 opens with a celebratory program welcoming Seraphic Fire’s new Artistic Director, Dr. James K. Bass. Spanning more than three centuries of choral artistry, this luminous concert features works live for our audiences. Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to pairs piano, solo violin, and chorus in a radiant tapestry of Romantic lyricism. Eric Whitacre’s When David Heard offers an unaccompanied tour de force of vocal color and profound emotional depth. Buxtehude’s Baroque meditation Ad Manus is reimagined through Caroline Shaw’s contemporary response, To the , weaving strings and voices into a striking dialogue across time. Together, these works explore beauty, grief, devotion, and the transcendent power of the human voice.

Seraphic Fire sizzles in a stylish evening of jazz standards, backed by a small combo of piano, guitar, bass, and drums. With the rich blend of 13 voices, the ensemble explores the close harmonies and uncanny American “cool” that defined classics made famous by Nat King Cole, Etta James, and Cole Porter alongside many more legendary voices of the Great American Songbook. From and When I Fall in Love to shimmers with warmth, swing, and sophistication, transporting audiences to the intimate jazz clubs of the early twentieth century— an unforgettable celebration of timeless melodies and velvetsmooth sound.

Timeless carols such as O Come, O Come Emmanuel and Adeste Fideles mingle with cherished European songs of the season, from France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and England, tracing their roots from the Medieval era to the flowering of the Renaissance. A millennium of music for men’s voices

Seraphic Fire celebrates the rich tradition of music written for men’s voices. This spirited and powerful program traces more than 1,000 years of repertoire, from Renaissance madrigals and Romantic part-songs to folk traditions. Along the way, audiences will hear the vibrant colors of Poulenc’s Laudes de Saint Antoine de Padoue. Folk songs such as Loch Lomond and Danny Boy bring warmth, humor, and camaraderie, creating an unforgettable evening that celebrates the depth, power, and brotherhood of men’s choral singing.

This program honors the late-20th century style of musical minimalism. Transforming the landscape of contemporary music, minimalism uses hypnotic soundscapes, shifting patterns, and luminous textures that, set alongside music, can evoke the vast landscapes and quiet transcendence of Northern Europe. Seraphic Fire performs works by Ola Gjeilo, Arvo Pärt, and Henryk Górecki, culminating in selections from Glass’s groundbreaking opera Einstein on the Beach—celebrating the enduring legacy of America’s most recognizable minimalist voice.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Seraphic Fire presents a stirring program honoring the voices that shaped the American story. Featuring musical settings of texts by writers commemorated in the National Garden of American Heroes—including Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Susan B. Anthony, Mark Twain, and Martin Luther King Jr.—this a cappella program brings the words of America’s most influential poets, authors, and orators to life. Through luminous choral settings, Seraphic Fire explores the ideals, struggles, and enduring spirit that define the nation.

Season 24 closes with a vibrant celebration of Latin American music, centered on Ariel Ramírez’s beloved Misa Criolla. This groundbreaking work blends the traditional Mass text with the rhythms and folk instruments of Argentina, creating a sound world alive with guitar, percussion, and dance-like energy. The program also features music by Miami composers Álvaro Bermúdez and Sydney Guillaume, weaving contemporary choral writing with the musical traditions of Argentina, Colombia, and Haiti in a joyful, rhythm-filled finale to the season.
