Serge Island Farm 9 has been established with the responsibility of caring for pregnant cows during their late stage of pregnancy. The objective is to provide standardized management of livestock and to minimize calf mortality. Farm 9 provides optimal care and comfort for pregnant cows and their new-born calves.

Nutrition Corner 6 Ways to Use Calorie-Dense Products in your diet Research has linked people's intake of high-calorie-dense foods to weight gain, obesity, and other lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. But not to worry, at Seprod, we are going to show you how to use our calorie-dense products without fear of becoming obese or getting sick. What is a calorie-dense food? A calorie-dense food is usually high in energy/calories and low in nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein).

Some nutritionists may consider Sweetened Condensed Milk and Margarine as calorie-dense foods.

Let’s take a look at the nutrition make up of these two foods.

1 Serving (2 tablespoons/~30g) Betty Sweetened Condensed Milk provides the body with: 90 calories 18g Sugar 2g protein 1g fat 70mg Calcium 5mg Cholesterol

Betty Sweetened Condensed Milk is high in energy/calories as such it provides quick energy to the brain. It has 0g trans-fat and consist of 70mg calcium which is 7% of your daily requirement.

How can we consume these foods without fear of becoming obese or getting sick?

1 Serving (1 tablespoons/~14g) Chiffon Margarine provides the body with: 100 calories 0g protein 11g fat 0g Sugar 466IU Vitamin A

Chiffon Margarine does not contain cholesterol, trans-fat and has added vitamin A. We know that foods with cholesterol and trans fat can lead to clogging and hardening of the arteries, leading to higher risk of blood clotting, heart attack or stroke.

1. Moderation is key, hence if you consume a lot of foods whether it is high calorie-dense or not, you may gain weight

4.Choose energy-dense foods that have other nutrients adding two tablespoon of Sweetened condensed milk will provide you 90 of those calories but also provides 2g protein, 70mg calcium and 100mg potassium. These are nutrients that the body requires.

2. Eat small portions of energy-dense foods at each meal, do not overindulge.

5.You can mix these high-calorie-dense foods with nutrient-dense foods for a more balanced meal. E.g.

a. 2 tablespoons (30g) of Betty Sweetened Condensed milk have 90 calories this is equivalent to ½ cup Cow’s Milk. b. 1 tablespoon of Chiffon Margarine has 100 calories; this is equivalent to 1 medium chicken leg.

3.Know your daily calorie requirement. Recommended daily dietary requirement is 2000 Calories for the average individual. This may vary dependent on age, activity level and gender. a. An employee who sits for six hours per day working away at a computer will utilize 1800 caloriso one serving of Betty in coffee and one serving of chiffon on a slice of white bread will give 340 calories.

6. Add some physical activities to your routine. Most of us live a sedentary lifestyle; we sit to perform our jobs, spend a lot of time on our computers, phones or watching television.

Instead let’s incorporate 30 minutes of physical activities at least three days per week, these may include brisk walking, jogging, skipping, dancing, playing football, helping with chores around the house, gardening. etc.

So next time you consume a serving of Betty Sweetened Condensed Milk or Chiffon Margarine, don’t feel guilty but rest assured that you are consuming foods that are not only delicious but contain nutrients that our body needs. Always remember moderation is key.

1. Get involved Supervision isn’t an armchair occupation, nor does “getting involved” mean running your section “by decree” from a closed office. It means getting out and understanding the day-to-day operation firsthand. It means knowing your people as individuals and being known by them. Visible and personal involvement by the supervisor builds morale and a sense of cohesion within the entire section.

This forms a substantial base for a productive supervisor/subordinate relationship.

2. Open channels of communication Effective communication probably won’t occur unless you, as supervisor, take active steps to open channels between yourself and your subordinates.

To be effective, communication should travel in both directions from the bottom up, as well as from the top down. Most important, you must create situations in which frank communication is possible and likely to occur.

Here are some effective practices: • Schedule meetings for the entire work team.

• Invite suggestions and use them whenever possible.

• Be available for discussions.

3. Give your people a chance to develop Human beings, unlike machines, are inherently dynamic. They work best in situations where they can develop

themselves, rather than simply repeat a static routine. Allowing for and promoting worker development is a key to effective human relations.

Be sensitive to individual differences in your people.

Tailor their duties and their training to match their respective capacities. People, doing outstanding work or who demonstrate superior capacity, should be challenged with tasks that are more responsible.

It is important to rotate your people through many jobs within the section to give them experience in various aspects of their career.

4. Establish standards and stick to them A major part of your job as supervisor will be to evaluate the people in your section. Since all evaluations must be based on some standard of judgment, the supervisor should communicate job performance standards to the workers at the outset.

5. Provide feedback Feedback is communication between supervisor and subordinate, intended either to correct substandard performance or reinforce superior performance. Besides establishing standards, providing people with feedback on their work is an essential step in evaluating your personnel.

Frequent, well-intentioned feedback builds a “therapeutic environment” in which workers perform in their full capacity. Withholding negative feedback hurts everyone concerned- it hurts the worker who isn’t given a chance to correct poor performance, and it hurts the organization because you are tolerating substandard work.

SEPROD FOUNDATION Robotics League Webinar Series: Supporting SMEs Seprod Foundation has proudly partnered with Halls of Learning to offer Virtual Robotics Jamaica from October 2021 to January 2022 as a part of our series of #codejamaica virtual activities. Each of the 4 tournaments in the Halls of Learning Robotics League has a particular theme and topic. The themes and topics present a unique opportunity for students to learn about the real life problems (and real life solutions) that they are competing to solve in the tournament. The first Under 13 topic is Supporting Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Seprod Foundation hosted a webinar on the theme of Supporting SMEs for primary school students. The webinar featured various experts offering different perspectives on how students can Support SMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Richard Pandohie, President of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association explained what SMEs are, and why they are so important to the economy.

Callia Smith, Vice President of Programmes at Junior Achievement Jamaica provided students with information on how they can start their own small businesses. Mariame Robinson-McIntosh, President and CEO of First Global Bank helped students understand the role of banks in supporting SMEs.

Seprod Foundation & Musson Foundation Back-to-School Drive Seprod Foundation in collaboration with Musson Foundation engaged our staff to contribute to our Back to School Drive. A big ‘thank you’ to all the staff who made donations that can assist other children in preparing for Back to School. We successfully collected exercise books, textbooks and other school supplies that will be packaged and distributed to children’s homes to assist with virtual learning.

Community Donations We continued to provide support to our communities through COVID care packages and Back to School Assistance. We supported communities including Seaview Gardens, Tivoli Gardens, Ackee Walk, Waltham Gardens, Jones Town and Yallahs.

We also provided significant assistance to 100 Jamaicans studying in Cuba who were in need of food and sanitary items.
