Legal Immigration Assistance & Referrals SEPA Mujer's Legal Assistance for Victims Program has been able to provide the proper legal assistance to immigrant victims of crime and their families for 26 consecutive years!

The anti-immigrant rhetoric under the current administrations has made it difficult for the immigrant community to access the resources they need, and has further isolated victims and their families into lives of violence and despair. In spite of this, we continue to provide legal assistance to immigrant survivors of gender violence.

Leadership Model & Launch of New Pilot Program

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 1 At this level we explore ; building the power of the community through advocacy. We also learn about the history of migration and civil rights in the United States, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, legislative process and government, community organizing tools and communications with the purpose of organizing. This year we have graduated 18 from our Western Suffolk Chapters and 12 from our Southampton Chapters.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 2

In this training, we explore the history of immigration specifically on Long Island by learning about the core of current systemic and cultural problems. We immerse ourselves in the intersectionality of the feminist movement in Latin America, gender inequality in immigrant communities, and learn about past and present Latino activists. We explore the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as tools for effective defense.

Finally, we learn more about voting, gerrymandering and power mapping as tools to organize and promote greater local and state civic participation. This year in an effort to ramp up efforts to introduce this training into our new Huntington Station Chapter, we have delayed implementation to continue outreach, consistent meetings, civic engagement and a second Level 1 training.

SEPA Mujer’s unique 5-week, 25 hour intensive Civic Engagement and Leadership Development Training's (C.E.L Level 1 & 2), also known as “Talleres de Liderazgo”, are especially crafted using popular education methods and in partnership with the American Friends Service Committee; an Immigrants Rights Program from Newark, New Jersey in December 2006.The training manual is designed to engage local Latina immigrant women with insider advocacy tools and skills concentrating on the fundamentals of civic engagement. The training also prepares participants to be more actively engaged in local grassroots campaigns and community projects.

The training ends with a closing ceremony with certificates of completion with local legislators. The entire program is conducted in Spanish and is intentioned to be a safe space for latina immigrant women and girls.

LAUNCH OF NEW COORDINATORS the sales increase for TRAINING first quarter of 2020 For our last tier in our Leadership Development and Mentorship Program and Model, we launched a new COORDINATORS Training. This training was built to offer our member leaders with the tools they need to self organize and create self sustaining and self running chapters throughout Long Island.

In January with a pilot training with 4 member leaders and a full launch in November with 13 new COORDINATORS.

SEPA MUJER INC Expands Services to Victims New York State Office of Victims Services has award SEPA Mujer a 3 year award to work with victims of crime.

Through this Victim's Assistance Program SEPA Mujer will be providing: * AYUDA LATINA, an hotline for victims of gender based violence, hate crimes, wage theft, and gang violence.

Hotline volunteers will participate in 40 hours of training on these issues. It is anticipated that AYUDA Latina hotline will begin in April 2020. *A Sexual Assult Survivors Support Group meets on Tuesday nights, and is open to anyone who has experienced sexual assault as an adult. *Case Management Services will help crime survivors access any needed services after the crime, and will help them apply for Crime Victims Compensation if they meet the eligibility criteria. *Expanded immigration legal case relief services

Girls A.C.T (Activists Creating & Transforming) SEPA'S SUMMER LATINA YOUTH PROGRAM This is the third year of SEPA Mujer’s Latina Youth Program, Girls A.C.T. (Activists Creating and Transforming). As the Girls A.C.T program has grown, so have our community relationships and efforts. SEPA is so proud of our participants and can’t wait to see how they affect change in their lives and communities.

It is critical to our mission that we invest in, foster and nurture growth and leadership in our GIRLS ACT is the only future generation. culturally-competent and uniquely designed and tailored to each individual girl’s interest with a focus on social justice and community-building exercises. Concentrations include: grant writing, community videography, design, graphic organizing and event building. They are our leaders of tomorrow and SEPA sheroes!

2019 HIGHLIGHTS: Stony Brook University comprehensive tour in partnership with STRONG Youth, the participants were in a day-long series of department orientation, campus tours, workshops and seminars.

Social Justice Campaigns &​ COMMUNITY ORGANIZING ISSUES WE FOCUS ON: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IMMIGRATION GENDER INEQUALITY CIVIL RIGHTS

This year has been one of hardship, resilience and justice for our immigrant families. Through one of the hardest times for our immigrant community, it has been community hope and perseverance that has led the advocacy and community mobilization efforts to make our voices strong and powerful. SEPA Mujer also thanks our amazing grassroots partners and allies whom have joined forces and believed in SEPA Mujer inc.

Green Light NY 2019 Legislation A03675/ S1747 (STATE) SEPA Mujer joined the fight to restore access to drivers licences for all regardless of immigration status in New York State on February 2019 at the most critical point of the state-wide campaign where everyone was looking for support and the final push from the Long Island Democratic Senators. It was in this time when SEPA Mujer decided to respond to the community needs and confusion and organize with our partners local committees made up of organizations, leaders and most importantly community members to roll out a comprehensive community response targeting the areas with the most need as well as a massive grassroots mobilization. Massive Town Halls were organized within days, Riverhead has a response of 350+ people in assistance forcing us to organize two simultaneous presentations in two separate rooms. 3 Days after we marched to the DMV in Riverhead with over 300 people in assistance. A week later we organized in Huntington with over 150 people in assistance and just 2 weeks later a third in Patchogue was organized with over 300 people in assistance. We continued to organize 2 more town halls were organized in Nassau County, Hempstead, and Hicksville and collected more than 1,000 petitions from the local latino community. On June 17th 2019 SEPA Mujer was in Albany to witness the historic 7 hour vote in the Senate and on our way home we celebrated Governor Cuomo signing into law. SEPA Mujer is conituing the grassroots work to ensure successful implementation and community educaiton.

Public Charge & Public Benefits ​(FEDERAL) The Trump administration moved to target legal immigration and immigrants applying to become first time legal residents and those petitioning to entre legally into the United States. Historically, Public Charge is an unofficial test immigration agents conduct on applicants, if considered public charge, not only will immigrants get denied their adjustment of legal status, but could face deportation in extreme circumstances. The Trump administration filed to to expand to SNAP, Section 8, Medicaid (NY exempt) and Medicare part D (medicine assistance for people with disabilities). SEPA Mujer created grassroots education material and action items to engage the community about their rights on the changes to the Public Charge rule. On September 2019, news was made public that the proposal rule change was approved and would go into effect October 15th 2019. SEPA Mujer acted quickly on a local level, organizing dozens of people to submit their testimonies and also helped translate and submit testimonies for people who were unable to do so themselves. We quickly moved to start an educational campaign to alert service providers and community members that no changes have been made, but action is required to stop the dangerous changes. SEPA Mujer also enacted an online campaign to inform and engage people into action on Long Island (bit.ly/cargapublica19). Days before the date of implementation a New York Federal Judge submitted the first of five Federal Injuctions blocking the change.

Social Justice Campaigns &​ COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

V.A.W.A Re-authorization & IWVPA H.R.4319 (Federal)

ONGOING

When Trump shut down the government, he also halted the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The House has passed their version, however, the bill is at a stand-still in the Senate.

VAWA not only provides resources for victims of violence, it also allows for immigrant victims of domestic violence to self-petition. SEPA Mujer organized one of the largest rallies to be held out of Congressman Lee Zeldin’s office in Patchogue to push him to stand for our Long Island victims and survivors regardless of immigration status. We also created a letter of support with over 40 organizational sign on’s that were sent to all Long Island Senators and Congress representatives. We collected petitions with hundreds of signatures both online and grassroots. We continued supporting efforts of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and Planned Parenthood.

As we continue to advocate for full VAWA Reauthorization we also are starting to mobilize and advocate for IWVPA Immigrant Witness & Victim Protection Act H.R.4319 act Provisions in the IWVPA include:eliminating the restrictive annual cap on U Visas providing employment authorization to survivors while their petitions are pending for immigration protections under U and T visa and VAWA self-petitioners. Limiting deportation of victims and survivors with pending U visa, T visa, or VAWA-based relief should be released from detention. The fight continues...

DREAM ACT, D.A.C.A., AND T.P.S.

ONGOING

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients have been used as bargaining chips on a federal level by the Trump administration. As it stands right now DACA is no longer available for new applicants under Federal Executive Order and still uncertain pending a U.S Supreme Court ruling. TPS has also been moved to also end for certain countries.

Organizations and leaders now are calling for the passing of the American Dream and Promise Act (HR6) that looks to create a path to residency for DACA TPS and even those who qualify for legal permanent residency. As with many campaigns, there is a huge need to explain, break down and make the critical ever evolving information of campaign changes and create targeted specific content and action items for the latino immigrant community. This is the task SEPA Mujer brought on for our Long Island community who are often times disconnected and neglected from larger organizations. We have also been participating in roundtables, coalitions and committee organizing on a local level around DACA/ DREAM Act specifically the Long Island Dream Act Coalition targeting Long Island Senators and stakeholders, organizing rallies and forums to bring attention to DACA and DREAM Act. This year we also joined efforts with the local organizing group Pro Residencia TPS that’s in coordination with National Alliance TPS to support the grassroots organizing across Long Island. We organized rallies when the Journey for TPS bus arrived to Long Island, we marched together in Washington and have visited Congressman Peter King among others to fight for TPS holders!
