Authors‘ Note

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Korea! As fellow exchange students, it is our honor to present to you our view on student life in Korea. As students of Korean Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands, our interest and love for Korean culture and language brought us to Korea. Throughout our frequent stays at Korean universities, we have gained first-hand experience of Korea’s extensive cultural heritage and have overcome many difficulties in conquering the language.

One day, we happened across this small bookstore, tucked between two ancient palaces in downtown Seoul, called Seoul Selection Bookshop. After browsing many interesting books on Korea and having a nice chat with the owners, Seoul Selection invited us to consider the opportunity to write a book for fellow exchange students. Who could resist the offer to introduce Korea to more people! We were very glad for the chance to spread our love for Korea and make the experience of newcomers easier.

To know Korea, knowing the language is an important step. Therefore, the focus of this book lies on language, along with practical information to guide you in every step of your life as a foreign exchange student. We introduce some unique, fun elements of student life in Korea, like university festivals

and MTs (membership trainings), but also some necessary everyday things like study spots, housing, and shopping.

We hope this book will help you find your way in Korea. Good luck at your university and have fun during your stay!
