Seasons of Country come to life at show WHAT’S ON | ARTS YALLINGUP Aboriginal Art will welcome the return of its annual Bush Flowers and Foods Exhibition this spring, bringing together contemporary Aboriginal art, local wildflowers and stories of Country. Running from Sunday, September 27 to Sunday, October 11, the exhibition celebrates the Noongar seasons of Djilba and Kambarang and the changing colours, plants and foods that emerge across the South West at this time of year. The exhibition features Aboriginal artworks inspired by bush flowers, bush foods, medicines and
Country, displayed alongside locally sourced wildflowers throughout the gallery. Djilba marks the transition from winter into spring, with new growth and the first bursts of wildflowers beginning to appear across the landscape. As the weather warms, Kambarang brings an even greater explosion of colour, with more plants coming into flower and increased activity throughout the natural environment. For Noongar people, these seasonal changes are understood through close observation of Country, with flowering plants, weather, animals and changes in the landscape helping signal the availability of bush foods, medicines and water. Gallery director Sara Greay said
the exhibition was designed to reflect those connections between art and the natural environment. “The Bush Flowers and Foods Exhibition celebrates the incredible connection between Aboriginal art, Country and the natural environment,” she said. “Displaying the artworks alongside local wildflowers brings the exhibition to life and reflects what’s happening in the landscape around us at this time of year.” The exhibition includes works from Aboriginal artists from different Countries and communities across Australia, with pieces ex-
ploring relationships with native plants, seeds, fruits, medicines and traditional foods. Visitors are encouraged to look beyond the colour and beauty of the works to the stories, knowledge and connections to Country they represent. The local wildflower display will add another layer to the exhibition, bringing the colours of Djilba and Kambarang into the gallery and linking the works on the walls with the landscape outside. The exhibition will run from September 27 to October 11 at Yallingup Aboriginal Art, at the entrance to Yallingup Maze. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 4pm, with free entry. All artworks will be available for purchase.
The Bay OK Open Native Gardens Weekend will be held on October 10 and 11, with attendees given the chance to explore some of the region’s finest garden landscapes while learning practical tips to create paradise in their own backyards. Images supplied.
Open gates, wild spaces COMMUNITY PRIVATE gardens across Busselton and Dunsborough will open their gates to the public next month, giving locals a rare chance to explore inspiring native landscapes and pick up practical ideas for their own backyards. Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Bay OK Open Native Gardens Weekend, to be held on October 10 and 11, with a program of private garden visits, guided walks, workshops and expert advice. Hosted by GeoCatch, the weekend will showcase a collection of private native gardens not normally accessible to the public, highlighting creative landscaping, wildlife-friendly features and the use of local plant species. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet garden hosts and hear from horticulturalists, ecologists and naturalists on topics including native plants, habitat gardening, soil health and creating landscapes that support local wildlife. GeoCatch Executive Manager Drew McKenzie said the event would demonstrate what could be achieved when native plants were placed at the centre of garden design. “Visitors will be able to gather ideas for their own gardens, hear directly from experienced gardeners and learn how they can support local wildlife while cre-
ating attractive outdoor spaces,” he said. “It’s also a celebration of the role local gardens play in supporting birds, pollinators and wildlife while helping to protect the health of our waterways and the unique environment of Geographe Bay.” Saturday’s program will focus on Busselton, with entry to four private native gardens as well as workshops on native gardening and habitat creation. Participants can also join a guided walk through Ambergate Reserve, tour the Geographe Community Landcare Nursery and seek advice from local native plant experts. On Sunday, the program will move to Dunsborough, where visitors can explore a large native garden on a rural property and learn about FireWise gardening. The day will also include a guided wildflower walk and workshops covering soil health and wildlife-friendly garden design.
Bay OK Project Officer Lisa Massey said the weekend offered a rare opportunity to see what other gardeners had achieved. “Visitors will have the chance to step inside gardens they would never normally see and learn how native plants can bring colour, biodiversity and resilience to their own backyards,” she said. Organisers say the program has been designed to appeal to everyone from experienced gardeners to people just beginning to explore native planting, as well as those simply looking for a different way to enjoy spring in the South West. Several activities have limited places available, and GeoCatch is encouraging people to book early. Locations of the private open gardens will be provided to ticket holders before the event. The full program and tickets are available at https://events. humanitix.com/bay-ok-opennative-garden

A STRONG contingent of South West operators has been named among the finalists in the 2026 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards for Business Excellence.
Printmaker Elmari Steyn will unveil a collection of works at the Saltwater Gallery in Busselton, following the evolution of her creative career from her birthplace in Namibia to life in Western Australia.
A NEW exhibition at the City of Busselton Art Gallery will bring together 15 years of work by contemporary printmaker Elmari Steyn, tracing the evolution of a deeply personal practice shaped by memory, landscape and belonging. Born in Namibia and based in Western Australia since 2012, Steyn grew up among the remote landscapes of the Namib Desert and Skeleton Coast, experiences which continue to influence her work. Her exhibition, Just Me, begins with a period of reflection in 2011 that marked a turning point in her prac-
the works, allowing stories and recollections to emerge gradually through image, symbol and material. Steyn is no stranger to recognition in Busselton, having been joint winner of the City of Busselton Art Award in 2019 alongside sculptor Peter Zappa, before taking out the award as a solo recipient in 2021. Just Me will open with a function at 5pm on Friday, October 9. Steyn will also present an artist demonstration from 10.30am on Saturday, October 10, while an Art After Dark event will be held from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, November 6.
tice and follows the development of her imagery and ideas through significant changes in place and life. Working mainly in copperplate etching and intaglio printmaking, Steyn creates detailed compositions through a slow process of mark-making, layering and repetition. Trees, boats, houses and fragments of landscape recur throughout the works, moving between the familiar and the imagined and forming a visual language through which she explores memory, emotion, identity and place. The exhibition invites viewers to spend time with

Chorus of community to land next month WHAT’S ON | COMMUNITY BUSSELTON will join a global celebration of music, wellbeing and community next month when World Singing Day comes to Mitchell Park. Local choirs, performers and singers of all ages will gather on Saturday, October 17 for a relaxed community singalong celebrating the joy of making music together. The event is being presented by Building Busselton Town Team, The Shine Project Busselton and the Lions Club of Busselton. Building Busselton Town Team member Sheila Bentley said the idea was inspired by her own experience at World Singing Day in Perth in 2020. “I loved the experience so much that it became a dream of mine to make this happen here in Busselton,” she said. “Our community loves music and so we’re inviting everyone to come along and sing together in Mitchell Park. “It’s not how well you sing, it’s how well you feel while singing that makes it so much fun.” This year’s World Singing Day will place a particular focus on mental health and community connection, with events held in communities around the world. World Singing Day founder Scott Johnson said singing together could help people feel more connected. “Singing with others makes you feel less lonely and more part of the community,” he said. The Busselton event will feature a program of familiar songs spanning different eras and musical styles, with TV presenter, performer and educator Brigitta Pollard acting as MC.

Local performers David Pilpel, Karen Bigwood, Tim Cross and Sussane Siegrist will be among those helping lead the singalong, alongside singers from The Shine Project and Soundwaves Singing Studio. Participants will also have the chance to learn and perform the 2026 World Singing Day Song of the Year, Room for Everyone, led by Karen Bigwood and Sussane Siegrist. Ms Siegrist said The Shine Project was excited to be involved. “World Singing Day is about the joy of singing whilst creating harmonious communities — what can be better than that?” she said. World Singing Day Busselton will be held from 2pm to 3.30pm on Saturday, October 17 at Mitchell Park, on the corner of Queen and Prince streets.
FIFTEEN Great Southern wineries will head north to Busselton next month for a one-day tasting event showcasing more than 75 wines from across WA’s largest wine region. The Great Southern Wine Odyssey will be held at Shelter Brewing Co. on Sunday, October 4, giving South West wine lovers the chance to explore wines from Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup, Denmark and Albany without leaving Busselton. Great Southern Wine Producers Association chair Tom Wisdom said the event was designed to offer local wine drinkers something different while recognising the South West’s own strong wine culture. “People in Busselton and Margaret River are naturally loyal to their local wineries — and rightly so,” he said. “What we’re offering is a relaxed chance to taste wines from further south that they may not have come across yet.” The Great Southern is
known for cool-climate styles including Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz, along with a growing range of lesser-known varietals. Mr Wisdom said Busselton was a natural fit for the event. “Busselton locals are curious, engaged wine drinkers,” he said. “Many will jump at the chance to explore another region’s styles without needing to travel.”

Cooler future for our rarest reptile BETTER SPEEDS
ONE hundred juvenile western swamp tortoises bred through Perth Zoo’s Native Species Breeding Program were released at a site in the State’s South West earlier this month under a project being delivered via a partnership between South West NRM and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). The project is part of an ongoing recovery program for the critically endangered tortoise which dates back to the early 90s, involving a range of stakeholders, and designed to save the petite reptile from the brink of extinction. Twenty-five of the newly released tortoises have been fitted with radio tracking devices which will enable continued monitoring of the population health over the next year. Once thought to be extinct, numbers of western swamp tortoises in the wild clung to less than 50 for many years but thanks to tireless conservation efforts by DBCA, Perth Zoo, researchers, environmental organisations and community groups like Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise, estimates today number around 300 across four locations. However the tortoise remains one of the most critically endangered reptiles in the world.
The Western Swamp Tortoise was once thought to be extinct - but thanks to efforts from Perth Zoo, conservation experts, volunteers and government agencies, it is estimated around 300 are alive in four locations today.
Originally found just north of Perth, work began to establish a more southerly population of western swamp tortoises to cooler habitat in 2016 by translocating individuals bred at Perth Zoo outside of their known range, recognising that one of the ma-
jor threats to their survival was a warming and drying climate. With funding from the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, South West NRM has been able to assist with this latest leg of the recovery program which has involved monitoring the health of previously translocated tortoises which, once identified as healthy, paved the way for these new additions. South West NRM CEO Dr Manda Page said it was a privilege for the organisation to be involved in and contribute to this latest stage of a long-term recovery program for such a truly unique species found nowhere else on earth. “Once we reach the stage of undertaking interventions like
translocations, we know that a species is really in peril,” Dr Page said. “When it comes to preserving the rich and internationally-recognised biodiversity of this region, every species counts and we must sometimes take bold but cautious action if further extinctions are to be prevented.” DBCA Research Scientist Bethany Nordstrom said the release marked another important milestone in the long-term recovery of the western swamp tortoise. “This release is an important step in helping the species reach cooler southern habitat, which may provide an important safeguard as the climate continues to warm and dry across its traditional range,” Ms Nordstrom said. “The release of these additional 100 juvenile tortoises reflects more than 15 years of collaboration between Perth Zoo, South West NRM, researchers and community conservation groups working together to secure the future of this remarkable species. “Thanks to the ongoing support of the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, we can continue vital monitoring, research and on-ground recovery actions that are helping give the western swamp tortoise the best possible chance of survival.”

FOR BUSSELTON MORE than 8,000 homes and businesses across Busselton are now eligible to upgrade to full fibre internet through the nbn network. The Fibre to the Premises upgrade replaces older copper-based nbn technology, with more than 1,800 local customers already making the switch. Nbn says fibre offers greater reliability and faster speeds, with participating providers able to offer wholesale download speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps. The upgrade is aimed at supporting the growing number of people working from home, running businesses remotely, studying online and using multiple connected devices. “Fibre is not only our fastest technology, but also our most reliable and future-ready one,” Nbn WA’s Naomi Evans said. “As the region continues to grow, fibre upgrades are helping replace legacy copper infrastructure and provide access to a more reliable and resilient nbn network. “Whether it’s running a business, working remotely, studying online or staying connected with family and friends, reliable broadband has become an essential part of everyday life.” Busselton CCI boss Victoria Sorrell said improved reliability would be welcomed by local businesses. “The fact that now more than 8,000 homes and businesses can get access to a free fibre upgrade is a big step forward,” she said. “Reliability is critical when the town is busy.” Eligible customers can check upgrade availability through their preferred internet provider or via the nbn website.

MIND-ED | COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Art of connection & recovery
HEALTH & WELLBEING MIND-ED is committed to promoting organisations that strengthen mental health and wellbeing in our region. For their latest spotlight feature, Mind-Ed asked Lamp Inc about their Art Recovery Workshops, exploring how creativity, connection, and self-expression can support wellbeing in a safe and inclusive environment. Can you tell us about the Art Recovery Workshop? During the Art for recovery workshops, we offer creative activities to help people explore emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-awareness, and communicate experiences that may be hard to express in words. The focus is usually on the process of creating, rather than making ‘good’ art. What inspired the creation of the workshop? Lamp Inc has been offering community-based mental health support for 30 years. The current Lamp Inc Day-2Day program offers Art Recovery in Busselton, and we have Margaret River participants who travel to attend. This inspired Lamp Inc to improve mental health in the broad-
Workshop facilitators Sam and Sarah create a welcoming space for connection, creativity and self-expression through Lamp Inc’s Art Recovery Workshops in Margaret River. Photo: Mind-Ed
er community, by creating a new space to outreach in Margaret River. Who is the workshop designed for? This workshop is designed for any adults experiencing Mental Health challenges who are looking for community connection in a non-clinical, safe space. Lamp Inc celebrates the diversity of our community, and this is an all-inclusive workshop and we welcome NDIS participants, LGBTQI+ and people who are Neurodivergent. The focus of this workshop is not
artistic skill, although if you have some creative talent, that’s a bonus! We are focused on connection, safety, and emotional regulation in a non-judgemental space. Our facilitator, Sam is a qualified Art Therapist, and Sarah has a Degree in Positive Psychology. Together Sarah and Sam facilitate this Art Workshop combining art and science to create a more intentional Art Recovery program. Positive Psychology focuses on a more strengths-based approach to mental health. It uses evidence-based strategies
to help people to thrive! Participants will engage in art activities with elements of Positive Psychology, such as gratitude, strengths, meaning or mindfulness. What does a typical workshop feel like for someone walking in for the first time? The Wash House at the Margaret River Community Centre is a cozy intimate space where we all gather around a shared table to participate in creative activities with intention. We have the warm heaters on, low sensory lighting and music, with colourful buntings along the ceiling. All the art materials are provided at no extra cost. Why is creative expression and peer connection important to mental health recovery? Expressing ourselves through creativity is a form of play, and it is so important to play! Art is a creative way to express ourselves safely, to stay grounded and focus on the present. Sarah and Sam have lived-experience with their own mental health challenges, and work alongside you on the activities as peers. What are the current workshop details people should know? We are located at the Margaret
River Community Centre Wash House every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm. We offer free hot coffee and tea, and often share a nourishing vegan curry meal together, which is provided by the Soup Kitchen onsite (meals cost $5 cash and are optional). Referrals and bookings are required and self-referrals are welcome. Referral forms can be found on the Lamp Inc website or can be emailed to you - just call 9754 1834. You can also drop in on a Wednesday during the workshop and we can help sign you up. There is a fee for NDIS participants who have access to funding in their ‘core budget’. It is free for non-government funded referrals. Donations are always welcome, and donations are a vital part of non-for-profit organisations and contribute to ongoing services. Mind-Ed is a community-led initiative that empowers individuals through early intervention and prevention education, promoting mental wellbeing and building a resilient, informed community. Memories on show
FACES + PLACES CAPECARE has marked 65 years of caring for older people in the South West with the opening of a special exhibition celebrating the people, stories and milestones that have shaped the organisation. The exhibition brings together historic photographs, newspaper clippings and memorabilia tracing Capecare’s journey from its early beginnings in Busselton to the range of aged care and support services it provides today. Capecare Chair Martha Ryan said the anniversary was as much about the community as the organisation itself. “Capecare’s story has always been a community story,” she said. “Over 65 years, thousands of people have contributed to Capecare in different ways — as residents, clients, families, staff, volunteers, Board members, donors and supporters.” Guests at the exhibition opening had the chance to revisit moments from across the decades and reflect on the organisation’s long connection with the region. The exhibition will remain on display in Capecare’s main administration building until October 30. Entry is free and everyone is welcome. Photos thanks to Abby Murray Photography.

Study exposes scale of housing crisis
CHILDREN, families and people aged over 65 are among dozens of Busselton residents identified as experiencing homelessness or severe housing instability in a new local study. Data gathered during Accordwest’s Connections Week identified 86 people without secure housing, including 17 children and young people aged under 18, eight families and 10 people aged 65 or older. More than half – 54 people – were sleeping rough, while others were couch surfing, staying in caravan parks or crisis accommodation, or sleeping in vehicles. Accordwest stressed the figures represent-
ed only people identified during Connections Week and should not be considered the total number experiencing homelessness across the Busselton region. The community-led initiative saw service providers engage directly with people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity to better understand their circumstances and the barriers to finding and keeping a home. The results also highlighted the role of family and domestic violence, with 54 per cent of respondents reporting they had lost or left housing because of violence in the home. Accordwest CEO Danelle Milward said

the findings challenged stereotypes about who experienced homelessness. “Behind every number in this report is a person with a story,” she said. “What the report revealed is that homelessness in Busselton is affecting people from all walks of life, many of whom would not fit the stereotype of what people expect homelessness to look like.” Housing affordability was identified as another significant pressure, with median weekly rents in the region now exceeding median weekly individual incomes. The study also found significant health challenges among those surveyed, with 61.54 per cent reporting serious ongoing health issues. Rates of respiratory disease were eight times the 2021 Busselton Census rate, while cancer, diabetes and heart disease were reported at more than twice the rate of the broader community. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accounted for 15 per cent of participants, compared with about 2 per cent of the local population. Accordwest homelessness programs manager Matt Wilson said many participants had previously rented or owned homes, held jobs and contributed to their community. “The reality is that a relationship breakdown, family violence, illness, rising rents or unexpected financial hardship can quickly lead to housing instability,” he said. The report also found homelessness could erode people’s connection to the community

in which they had lived, compounding existing disadvantage. City of Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin said the findings would help local organisations better understand community needs and identify practical responses. As a next step, the City will establish a Local Housing and Homelessness Leadership Group, bringing together agencies, service providers and community stakeholders to coordinate responses to housing and homelessness issues. “Housing affordability remains a critical issue,” Cr Cronin said.

HAPPY CAMPERS FACES + PLACES MORE than 10,200 people flocked to Churchill Park for the Busselton Caravan & Camping Show at the weekend, with attendance up 11 per cent on last year. The two-day event brought together caravans, camper trailers, motorhomes, camping gear and accessories, along with demonstrations, family activities and local entertainment. Caravan & Camping WA CEO Carol McCracken said the turnout reflected the South West’s strong interest in the caravan and camping lifestyle. “To welcome more than 10,200 people through the gates across the weekend was a wonderful result,” she said. “There was a fantastic atmosphere across both days, with people coming to see what’s new, talk directly with industry experts and find inspiration for their next adventure.” Visitors also had the chance to experience the RAC Rescue helicopter through virtual reality, explore a St John WA ambulance and take part in the Passport to Freedom competition. For the first time, public entry was free, with Caravan & Camping WA funding admission for the 2026 event. The Busselton Caravan & Camping Show will return to Churchill Park in September 2027.

Support closer to home HEALTH & WELLBEING PEOPLE living with type 1 diabetes across the South West, including Augusta Margaret River and Busselton Dunsborough, will have access to a new regional support network launching next month. More than 1,000 people across the South West live with type 1 diabetes, but many opportunities for specialist support, education and connection have traditionally been centred in Perth. That will begin to change with the launch of the T1D South West Chapter, the first regional chapter established in WA by the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre. While officially launching in Bunbury on Sunday, October 11, the free network will support children and adults with type 1 diabetes, along with their families and carers, throughout the South West. Members will be able to connect through a dedicated online community as well as regular face-toface gatherings and activities led by trained local volunteers with support from the Family Centre. The initiative follows a Family Centre needs assessment which identified connection as one of the strongest needs among people with type 1 diabetes in the South West.
Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune condition with no known prevention or cure and requires continual management of insulin, glucose levels, food, exercise, illness and other aspects of everyday life. For people living in regional areas, those demands can be compounded by distance from services and fewer opportunities to meet others who understand the condition. South West local Amy Twist, who lives with type 1 diabetes and will host the chapter launch, said having that community closer to home could make an important difference. “When you’re living with type 1 diabetes in the South West, it can sometimes feel like you’re the only one,” she said. “Knowing there are other people nearby who understand the everyday challenges makes such a difference.” Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre CEO Jemma Iles said the aim was to establish a lasting regional network rather than simply bring services from Perth for occasional events. “Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you have access to support, education and a community that understands the
realities of living with type 1 diabetes,” she said. “This chapter is our response. It’s not about coming down from Perth for a one-off event; it’s about building an ongoing network in the South West, shaped by local people and supported by the Family Centre for the long term.” The chapter, supported by funding from the WA Department of Health, could also provide a model for similar networks in other regional communities. Two events will mark its launch in Bunbury on October 11. A free T1D Family Day will be held at the Koolambidi Woola Youth Services Building from 11am to 1.30pm, offering children with type 1 diabetes and their parents, carers and siblings a chance to meet other South West families. T1D Adult Connect will follow at Bayview Bar from 4.30pm to 7pm, featuring South West local and guest speaker Nina Gelbke of Naturally Nina. Tickets are $25 and include dinner and a drink. South West residents can also join the T1D South West online community for local connections and information about upcoming events. For details and registrations, visit www.type1familycentre.org.au

Residents say a decision with such long-term implications warrants broader public discussion before further landfill infrastructure is committed. Their concerns also include the site’s contamination history. The City says investigations have identified substances indicative of landfill leachate in groundwater at the western boundary, with further investigations underway. The CNCA is encouraging residents to examine the proposal before the consultation closes and has established an online campaign outlining its concerns and calling for greater scrutiny of the City’s longterm plans.
CAPE Naturaliste residents are calling for greater scrutiny of plans for the Vidler Road Waste Management Facility, as the deadline for public submissions approaches. The City of Busselton has applied for a new works approval covering development including a new landfill cell and leachate pond at the Naturaliste facility. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation consultation closes on Friday, October 2. The Cape Naturaliste Community Association says its concerns extend beyond the immediate impacts on neighbouring properties to how the City has planned for Busselton’s long-term waste needs. Record field for summer season
busseltonmail.com.au
Wednesday 30 September, 2026
A RECORD field of 21 teams will take part in the 2026-27 Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association season, starting on Saturday, October 10. For the first time there will be six separate clubs fielding three or more sides each, said BMRCA president James Gannaway. “It’s great to see Cowaramup Cricket Club back to three sides for the first time since 2018,” Gannaway said. “Vasse were tossing up whether to field two or three sides this year but they have decided to go with three again. “Vasse were considering not putting a team in B-Grade but they have decided to do it. “Any new players looking for a club to join will have plenty of choices. We are still building our numbers and there are strong signs for the future of cricket in our region. “Vasse are particularly keen to recruit new players as they currently have only 31 players on their books for three sides.” The BMRCA competition will feature six teams in A-Grade, six teams in B-Grade and nine teams in C-Grade. The uneven number of C-Grade

sides will create one bye each week, and this is the reason for the C-Grade competition starting on October 10 – one week earlier than the A-Grade and B-Grade divisions. The BMRCA committee has also voted that there will not be a mid-season T20 competition, repeating last year’s break which coincided with the Australian Country Cricket Championships in the
Busselton-Margaret River region. The major rule change in the BMRCA this year will be the introduction of a free hit for all no-balls in regular A-Grade, B-Grade and C-Grade home-and-away games, as well as finals. The rules for the power play have also changed for all grades. The umpires will need to be constantly watching how many fielders are standing outside the 30-yard circle.

The finals will be played early this summer, getting under way on March 13 with the grand finals set for March 20. The BMRCA wind-up will be held the following day, Sunday, March 21. Gannaway said the reason for the early grand final and early windup is that Easter falls the following week and the BMRCA are keen to finish the season before a compulsory Easter break. Talks between the BMRCA and the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association for a joint five-round “premier-league” competition in January between the respective A-Grade teams in both competitions have been put on hold pending further discussions. “We did not have enough time to resolve a number of unanswered questions,” Gannaway said. A novel bid by Marist Cricket Club – one of the most successful clubs in the Bunbury competition – to join the BMRCA this season has also not eventuated. “Marist were interested in playing different teams apart from the same old sides in Bunbury, but in the end it did not happen,” Gannaway said. In other pre-season news, a representative team from Busselton-Margaret River will compete

in the statewide Country Cup competition on October 10 and 11 in Geraldton. Country Colts, Wheatbelt and Geraldton will be the other teams competing in the Country Cup competition this year. A three-game round robin of T20 games will be played, with the final to be staged on the afternoon of Sunday, October 11. “The BMRCA owes a debt of thanks to Danny Weston and Shane Joyce for their support in travelling with the team,” said Gannaway. The inaugural BMRCA Tigers, the first ever women’s team to fully represent the BMRCA, will be playing in the Bunbury league this year. “Thanks are due to Pieter Bresser, Elle Weston, the Lepidis and many others for their hard work in getting the side off the ground,” said Gannaway. “It’s the start of something big for women’s cricket in our region.” The WA Country Masters Carnival will also be held on January 15 and 16 in Bunbury, one week before Senior Country Week. Teams of Over-40s and Over-50s from Busselton-Margaret River will take part in the carnival. “The BMRCA old boys play under the name of the Thylacines, and they are itching to get back into it,” said Gannaway.

Rainbow Rides: Busso gears up for Worlds three chances to get on your bike CYCLING SOUTH West riders looking for an excuse to get on the bike in October will have three chances to join free community rides as excitement builds towards the 2026 UCI Gravel World Championships in Nannup. A series of Rainbow Rides will be held in Balingup, Bridgetown and Pemberton from October 4 to 6, giving riders from across the wider region an opportunity to be part of the international cycling event taking place just days later. Each event will feature a relaxed 15km community ride as well as a free Event Village, with activities designed for riders, families and children. The rides begin in Balingup on Sunday, October 4, followed by Bridgetown on Monday, October 5 and Pemberton on Tuesday, October 6. The 15km courses are open to riders aged 12 and over to complete independently, while younger riders can also participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children not ready for the full ride will still have plenty of chances to get on two wheels, with dedicated kids’ cycling activities alongside other free entertainment in the Event Villages. Australian professional cyclist Matilda Raynolds will attend all three events, meeting participants and joining riders out on the course. Warren Blackwood Alliance of Councils Executive Officer Katie McDonnell said the events were designed to allow communities across the wider South West to share in the excitement surrounding the championships. “The UCI Gravel World Championships are bringing an incredible international cycling event to our region, and we wanted to make sure our surrounding communities had an opportunity to be part of that excitement as well,” she said. “The Rainbow Rides are relaxed and community focused. You don’t
need to be an experienced cyclist – whether you’re taking on the 15km ride, bringing the younger kids along for the bike activities, or simply coming down to enjoy the Event Village, there’s something for everyone.” The timing could make the rides particularly appealing to the region’s strong mountain biking and recreational cycling community, with all three host towns within reach for South West riders keen to turn the event into a day trip or longer cycling weekend. The rides also form part of the wider lead-up to the UCI Gravel World Championships, to be held in Nannup on October 10 and 11. Businesses and venues throughout the Southern Forests and Valleys are preparing to welcome visitors during championship week, with the Rainbow Rides aimed at encouraging people to “Ride, Watch & Explore” and spend time discovering more of the region. Participation in both the rides and Event Village activities is free. Riders need to bring their own bike and helmet, and while pre-registration for the 15km rides is encouraged, participants can also register on the day.
CYCLING BUSSELTON will become a key base for some of the world’s best cyclists next month as the South West prepares to host the 2026 UCI Gravel World Championships. The championships will be raced in Nannup on October 10 and 11, with Busselton serving as the official event hub for rider registration, race-week functions and community activities. It will be the first time the UCI Gravel World Championships have been held outside Europe, bringing elite international riders, age-group competitors and cycling fans into the South West. From Wednesday, October 7, a daily Coastal Cruise Ride will leave Shelter Brewing Co at 7am, taking riders on a 54km flat route to Dunsborough and back. Busselton will also host the official welcome and registration activities on Thursday, October 8, with rider registration from 10am to 5pm and a Welcome to Country and official ceremony at 4pm at Saltwater Busselton. The championships will feature courses made up of more than 80 per cent gravel, with regular climbs of between one and 3.5 kilometres and the final summit just 3.5km from the finish. Event Director Stephen
Fourteen-time world champion and two time Olympic gold medallist Marianne Vos says she is keen to be back competing in the South West of WA ahead of the 2026 Gravel World Championships. Photo: Leon Van Bon/3RIDES
Gallagher said the course would offer a different challenge from previous editions. “At most races, the biggest challenges come early. Not here,” he said. “The climbing is relentless from start to finish, with the hardest kilometres saved for last.” Among the international stars heading to the region is Dutch cycling great Marianne Vos, a 14time world champion and twotime Olympic gold medallist. Vos has won world championships across road, track, cyclo-cross and gravel racing
and will attempt to become the first rider to win the UCI Gravel World Championships twice. “I have such good and special memories of Western Australia, especially from the Tour of Margaret River, so it feels really nice to be going back,” Vos said. Elite women and women’s agegroup competitors will race on Saturday, October 10, with the elite men and men’s age-group categories racing on Sunday, October 11. More information is available at gravelchampswesternaustralia. com.
The Balingup Rainbow Ride will run from 9am to noon at the Balingup Medieval Carnival Site on Sunday, October 4. Bridgetown’s event will be held from 9am to noon at Bridgetown Primary School on Monday, October 5, while the Pemberton event will run from 2pm to 5pm at Pemberton District High School on Tuesday, October 6. The Rainbow Rides are supported by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, Warren Blackwood Alliance of Councils, WestCycle and Cycling Eventures. Further information and pre-registration details are available at southernforestsandvalleys. com/2026-uci-gravel-world-championships/rainbow-rides
Three Rainbow Rides will be held across the Southern Forests region in October, aimed at giving riders across the region the chance to get involved in the UCI World Gravel Championships. The 15km courses are open to riders aged 12 and over to complete independently, while younger riders can also participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
A large crowd gathered in Nannup last week for the official accreditation of Nannup’s Trail Town status, the third town in WA to receive the honour. Photos: Daniela Tommasi Photography
Trail Town status for Nannup NANNUP has become WA’s third accredited Trail Town, joining Collie and Dwellingup in a growing network of regional trail destinations. Already known for its cycling culture, Nannup offers gravel, endurance and mountain biking experiences, including purpose-built downhill trails through the forests and landscapes of the South West. The WA Trail Town program, administered by Trails WA, recognises towns with strong connections between their trails, communities, local businesses and visitor economies. Trails WA chair Suzanne Hillier said Nannup brought something different to the network. “With Nannup joining Collie and Dwellingup, we now have a genuine network of Trail Town destinations in Western Austra-
lia,” she said. “Nannup has a particularly strong cycling identity, from gravel and endurance riding through to mountain biking and downhill experiences.” Shire of Nannup President Tony Dean said the accreditation followed years of planning, development and community support. “This milestone belongs to the community members, volunteers, businesses, government partners, contractors and Shire staff whose hard work and perseverance have
brought the Trail Town vision to life,” he said. “Their efforts are creating healthier lifestyles, stronger local businesses and new opportunities for future generations.” Ms Hillier said visitors could now explore one Trail Town or link Nannup, Collie and Dwellingup together as part of a wider trail-based road trip. Visitors can explore the three destinations and plan trail experiences through the Trails WA website and mobile app.
