SOME of the young gymnasts arriving at Horizon Gymnastics Club last weekend had only ever seen Georgia Godwin and Kate McDonald on screen. The Olympians and Commonwealth Games gold medallists were everything these young athletes aspired to be. By the weekend’s end, they were chalking up alongside their heroes, picking up tips on beam routines and taking part in a lively Q&A filled with advice, stories and fun. From September 4 to 6, families travelled to the Vasse club from across Western Australia, some from as far north as Exmouth and as far south as Albany. The three-day Horizon Thrive training and wellbeing clinic grew from an idea close to owner Linda’s heart: young athletes should never have to choose between performing at their best and looking after themselves along the way. The idea began in 2025, when Linda and her partner Caleb joined a webinar featuring Paris Olympians Emma Nedov and Georgia-Rose Brown. “We were so inspired by their stories of resilience, determination and perseverance that we wanted to provide an opportunity for athletes, coaches, families and clubs to come together, meet, learn and thrive

alongside world-class athletes,” Linda said. They launched the first Thrive clinic in June that year and returned with the event in 2026. Over five sessions, small groups rotated through six stations. Georgia and Kate led training on bars and beam, drawing on years
at the highest level to offer support and encouragement. Refresh Physio Margaret River guided gymnasts through landing technique, strength and injury prevention, while nutrition expert Shannon Prideaux made her session hands-on, with athletes rolling protein balls as they learned about fuelling training and recovery. Away from the mats, young gymnasts had time to ask questions, collect autographs and pose for photos with the Olympians they admire. On Saturday evening, more than 60 parents and coaches gathered for an open forum about guiding young athletes through the pressures, setbacks and triumphs of the sport. Across the weekend, Horizon welcomed 240 gymnasts and 20 coaches from 21 clubs. “It was such a success,” Linda said.

“We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback on how the event ran, the initiative itself, and the opportunities it provides, as well as lots of excitement for next year.” The experience was especially meaningful for those who rarely have the chance to meet elite gymnasts close to home. “Access to athletes they admire and aspire to be like is very rare, especially in the regions,” Linda said. “It is an invaluable experience and a memory we hope stays with them for the rest of their lives.” Linda and Caleb took over Horizon in 2023, with gymnastics already having been part of Linda’s life for more than three decades. She began coaching at 12, trained at the West Australian Institute of Sport and competed nationally until she was 24 before later earning her International FIG 2 Coaching
Accreditation. “Horizon has continued to grow as a family-run club since we purchased it,” she said. “We want to offer high-quality, affordable gymnastics and bring together people who value movement in a balanced, sustainable way.” For Linda and Caleb, the goal extends well beyond medals. “We believe in building great humans, not just great athletes,” Linda said. “Gymnastics is a small window in our athletes’ lives. Maybe they’ll stay in the sport forever, like me, or maybe they won’t. “Regardless, we want them to leave as better people for having been involved.” With the chalk barely settled, planning for next year is already underway.

MORE than 90 women packed Tonic by the Bay last month as Busselton VIEW and Vinnies Busselton joined forces for their annual Sustainable Fashion Show. The August 20 event combined fashion, fundraising and community connection, with five Busselton VIEW members stepping onto a makeshift catwalk in preloved outfits curated by the Vinnies Busselton team. Before the runway began, Vinnies Manager of Volunteer Services May Bowden spoke about the importance of having a “third place” beyond home and work, and how volunteering can help people build connection and a sense of belonging. Then it was time for the fashion, with organisers joking that “Paris came to Busselton” as the models took to the runway. Vinnies Busselton’s Sandy provided commentary throughout the show, introducing each outfit and helping bring the looks to life. While there may have been a few nerves on the first walk down the catwalk, organisers said confidence quickly grew as the models returned for outfit changes and embraced the fun of the event. After the show, two guests took home door prizes donated by Vinnies before the catwalk was trans-

Everyone knows wood burns best when its dry. Our bulka bags of firewood are stored undercover, and covered on the truck in bad weather, so the wood arrives as dry as possible, not rain soaked. Even better we can usually place the bags undercover, on a verandah, under a carport on in your garage saving you the trouble of having to stack it to keep it out of the rain. No messy pile of wood on the driveway. For dry, no mess, zero effort warmth this winter give us a try. Order online or over the phone.

BUSSELTON Holiday Village has been sold to Avari Capital Partners in a major South West accommodation and tourism transaction. The property covers about 4.37 hectares and includes 94 long-stay sites and 46 short-stay sites, combining permanent residential accommodation with holiday stays close to Busselton’s CBD and beachfront. CRE Brokers confirmed settlement of the sale was completed on Thursday, September 3, with broker Mark Walsh handling the deal. Mr Walsh said the prop-
erty attracted strong interest during the sales campaign because of its scale, established operations and location in one of WA’s major tourism and retirement markets. “Busselton Holiday Village represented a genuinely rare opportunity to acquire a substantial accommodation asset in one of Western Australia’s most sought-after tourism and retirement markets,” he said. “The combination of longstay and short-stay accommodation, the size of the property and its proximity to Busselton and the broader
South West region made it highly attractive to buyers.” Mr Walsh said the level of enquiry reflected continued investor demand for quality caravan parks, holiday parks and accommodation properties around Australia. CRE Brokers thanked vendors Rob and Linda for entrusting the company with the sale and acknowledged Avari Capital Partners for its approach throughout the transaction. The property had been marketed at more than $15 million, although the final sale price has not been disclosed.

Festival unearths the past
THE South West Heritage Festival will return for its third year this October, with a theme inviting audiences to look beneath the surface — literally and figuratively. This year’s theme, Underground, will explore everything from geology, caves, soil and water to hidden histories, cultural memory and stories that have long sat out of sight. Organisers say the theme is intended to encourage deeper thinking about the landscapes and histories of Wadandi boodja, including the difficult and complex stories that form part of the region’s heritage. The program begins with the Underground exhibition at the Holmes à Court Gallery at Vasse Felix in Wilyabrup from October 5. The exhibition will explore hidden histories, truth telling and relationships with the natural world through works by artists including Brendon Darby, Sandra Hill, Monique Tippett, Merrick Belyea, Sandra Harben and Kelsey Ashe, alongside historical works by George Pitt Morrison and John Campbell. A major seminar will be held at Nala Bardip Mia – Margaret River HEART on October 31, bringing together speakers from across cul-

for a special heritage walking tour.
Wadandi custodian Zac Webb and archaeologist Joe Dortch will lead a conversation exploring Devil’s Lair and other significant archaeological sites, while Bill Bunbury will host a panel examining the region’s agricultural history, from dairy to viticulture, and the role of soil and land in shaping those industries.
Led by Sian from Busselton Walking Tours, the tour will take participants on a journey through the people, places and stories of Busselton’s past.
The Heritage Skills Association will also explore the history of local building techniques and community efforts to care for heritage places, with stonemason Bec Wiley providing a practical demonstration and workshop.
The walk departs from the Busselton Visitor Centre at Railway House, near the Jetty, just before 4pm and runs until 6pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Doors open at 10.30am, with Mr Webb welcoming attendees at 11am. The event is free, but bookings are essential. Later that afternoon, the festival moves to Busselton
With the tour falling on Halloween, participants are invited to dress up for the occasion, with a trick-or-treat surprise at the end.

YALLINGUP Steiner School recently welcomed families, former students and members of the wider community for two Open Days showcasing life and learning at the school. Separate events were held for Early Childhood and Primary School, giving visitors the chance to explore classrooms, meet teachers and see examples of student work including Main Lesson books, artwork and handwork. Families were also able to learn more about the school’s approach from Kindergarten through to Class 6, including how academic learning is combined with storytelling, art, music, movement, nature and practical experiences. A school spokesperson said the Open Days were designed to give families a clearer picture of not just what children produce, but how and why they learn at different stages. “It was lovely to be able to open the classrooms and share the learning journey behind the work,” the spokesperson said. “Families could see the strong academic foundations, but also the creativity, movement, practical skills and connection to nature that are such an important part of the school.”
Visitors to Yallingup Steiner School were able to explore the classrooms at both the Early Childhood and Primary School learning areas, learning more about the school’s approach to education from Kindergarten to Year 6. Past students were among the attendees, returning as parents of school-aged children. Photos Supplied.
One of the highlights was the return of several former students, some now visiting with young children of their own. For a school that has been part
of the South West community for more than 30 years, the spokesperson said seeing past students return as parents was particularly meaningful. “It was a beautiful reminder of the long connections people can have with the school and the community around it,” they said. Yallingup Steiner School offers education from Kindergarten to Class 6 using the nationally recognised Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework. Its place-based approach draws on the South West’s natural environment, seasons and community while providing a creative and developmentally responsive pathway through the primary years.
The school thanked teachers, staff, students and families who helped welcome visitors across both events. Prospective families who missed
the Open Days can arrange visits or make enquiries with the school throughout the year. For more, visit yss.wa.edu.au

A YALYALUP woman who broke new ground as Western Power’s first female apprentice at its Picton and Collie depot has been named WA Apprentice of the Year. Georgia Shinnick took out the major honour at the 2026 WA Training Awards after completing a Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead through Power Training Services WA. Now working as a line worker with Western Power, Georgia was recognised for her progress from apprentice to skilled tradeswoman, as well as the example she is setting for women considering careers in traditionally male-dominated industries. Described as a trailblazer and role model, Georgia said her apprenticeship had been filled with milestones, challenges and rewarding experiences. She is now passionate about en-

Georgia was one of seven women to claim the eight individual honours at this year’s WA Training Awards, which recognise outstanding apprentices, trainees, students,

FIRST responders and community volunteers from across the South West are being encouraged to swap emergency call-outs for a community walk next month as part of Steps of Hope: Busselton Jetty Telethon Giving Day. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 10, inviting SES volunteers, firefighters, police, paramedics, surf lifesavers, marine rescue crews, St John volunteers and other community groups to walk the 1.8km Busselton Jetty in support of Telethon. Participants can take part individually or form teams with colleagues, friends and family, with groups encouraged to wear their service colours and costumes. “Our first responders and community volunteers are there for us when we need them most,” Busselton Jetty chief executive Lisa Shreeve said. “Steps of Hope is a chance for us to come together and recognise that spirit of service while taking a few steps ourselves to help create hope for WA kids.”
Members of Busselton’s State Emergency Service, St John Ambulance and WA Police service get behind the Busselton Jetty Steps for Jope fundraiser coming up on October 10. Photos supplied.
Registration costs $5, with the full amount donated directly to Telethon. Ms Shreeve said the event was designed to be inclusive and focused more on participation than distance. “It’s not about how far you walk or how fast you go,” she said. “It is about taking a step together and knowing that every $5 donation and every
person who participates can help make a difference.” Prizes will also be awarded for costumes.

A rat, or native neighbour?
WHAT’S ON | ENVIRONMENT
SOME of the South West’s smallest native mammals will take centre stage at a free community sundowner in Dunsborough this month, helping residents tell the difference between introduced rats and local wildlife. Cape Naturaliste Conservation Enterprise will host “Is it a rat, or…?” at the Dunsborough and Districts Country Club on Wednesday, September 23. The idea came from CNCE officer Mandy Polley, who said she had noticed an increasing number of social media posts from residents asking for help identifying small mammals seen around homes and properties. “I was noticing a lot of posts from the community asking for help identifying an animal they’d observed, and whether it was a rat or a native mammal,” she said. The evening will feature zoologist Jess Johnston from Biologic Consulting and wildlife carer Jo Kennedy from A Single Leaf South West. They will introduce species including quenda, rakali and phascogales, explaining
the features and behaviours that can help people work out what is moving through their gardens, bush blocks and backyards. “Not every whiskered, furry visitor is a pest,” Ms Polley said. “Some of these animals are incredibly cute, fascinating native species that play an important role in our ecosystems.” The session will also cover safe ways to manage introduced black rats without accidentally harming native wildlife. Ms Polley said knowing what to look for could help people better appreciate the animals living around them. “Once you know what to look for, you start to see them in a completely different light,” she said. The sundowner forms

Crunch time at school SOUTH West primary schools are being encouraged to add some extra crunch to sports carnivals this term with a new healthy eating initiative from Cancer Council WA. The Great Carnival Crunch is designed to bring a healthy twist to sports day, cross-country training and other school sporting events by encouraging students to refuel with fresh vegetables. Cancer Council WA South West Regional Cancer Prevention Coordinator Emma Handreck said the program aimed to make healthy food part of the fun. “We know children love the excitement of a school carnival, so we’re bringing that same energy to vegetables,” she said. “The Great Carnival Crunch is about making healthy food part of the fun – getting kids cheering, moving and then reaching for fresh, crunchy vegetables to refuel.” The free program is open to all WA primary schools, with students encouraged to learn a special carnival chant before joining together for a

Schools can take part through a whole-school carnival activity, classroom session or cross-country training. Grants of up to $50 are also available to help schools
buy fresh vegetables. “There is also an element of friendly competition, with schools encouraged to count how many students and adults join their cheer and submit their results via the event survey for the chance to win prizes,” Ms Handreck said. Title treble for club DUNSBOROUGH Town Football Club is celebrating one of the strongest seasons in its history after securing three league championships across its junior and senior ranks. The club’s Men’s Reserves became the latest side to add silverware, claiming the Football South West Seniors League title with a 5-2 win over Dalyellup in the final game of the season. Their success completed a remarkable treble for DTFC, following league titles for the U14 Glory and unbeaten U17 Jets. Club president Tash Blefari said the results reflected the
to the wire, with the team’s composure and determination proving decisive. The club praised the squad’s commitment throughout the season, highlighting disciplined defending, pressure and strong finishing as features of the campaign. Ms Blefari said sealing the title in front of the home crowd made the achievement even more memorable. “Our Men’s Reserves have shown incredible commitment all season,” she said. “They turn up to training, they support one another and they play with pride every single week.” Jets complete unbeaten championship season
already making meaningful contributions at senior level. The U14 Glory also secured the 2026 Leeuwin Region League Championship after a season built around consistency, teamwork and development. Coach James Cross said he was “absolutely over the moon and proud of the squad and the professionalism they have brought to the game throughout the season”. The title capped a strong league campaign, but the team still has another opportunity for silverware with a Cup Final ahead. “We are not finished yet,” Ms Blefari said.

strength of the club across different age groups. “To see our U14 Glory, U17 Jets and now our Men’s Reserves crowned league champions in the same year is something truly special,” she said. “It speaks to the culture we have built — one of hard work, connection and genuine love for the game.” Men’s Reserves seal title at home The Men’s Reserves entered their final-round clash against Dalyellup knowing a win would secure the championship. They delivered when it mattered, producing a 5-2 victory at home to finish the season on top. Coach Andrew Porter said the title race had gone down
The U17 Jets were crowned Football South West Regional League Champions after completing the entire league season without a loss. The squad maintained a consistently high standard throughout the year, with coaches Steve Blefari and Brent Peterson guiding a group that also supplied several players to DTFC’s senior teams. Ms Blefari said the squad had shown maturity, discipline and resilience throughout the campaign. “They have shown what can be achieved when passion, hard work and community come together,” she said. The championship also provided an encouraging glimpse of the club’s future, with a number of the Jets
“They’ve already completed a brilliant season, but there could be another high to come.” Cup finals still to come DTFC’s season is not over yet, with several teams preparing for Football South West Cup Finals at Hay Park in Bunbury on September 19. Both U12 Victory and U12 Wanderers have qualified for the junior final, guaranteeing DTFC representation, while U14 Glory and the Men’s Reserves have also secured Cup Final places. The club said its success across the season had been underpinned by coaches, volunteers, parents, supporters, sponsors and grant partners who helped players train, travel and compete throughout the year.

Pies go back to back Doubles duo claim silver PICKLEBALL
FROM THE COVER THE Busselton Magpies Under 16s have capped another outstanding season with back-toback premierships after a thrilling extra-time Grand Final win over Bunbury on Saturday. The Magpies were made to work for every moment of their title defence, recovering from a Qualifying Final loss to Bunbury before defeating Harvey Brunswick Leschenault in the Preliminary Final to earn another shot at their rivals. Saturday’s decider at Eaton proved every bit as tough. Busselton trailed at different stages but refused to let the game slip away, fighting back to level the scores at the end of regular time and force an additional 14 minutes. From there, the Magpies’ fitness, depth and composure came to the fore. Every player took the court and contributed as Busselton gradually pulled away, eventually securing a five-goal victory and a second consecutive premiership. Club president Alli Edwards said the result was a fitting reward for a group that had shown resilience throughout a demanding finals campaign. Lead coach Sarah Burge guided
the team through the finals series, supported on the bench by Millie Wesley and Annette Kontogerogis, while team manager Michelle Devereux played a key role behind
the scenes throughout the season. The Magpies were also backed by a large contingent of blackand-white supporters who filled the stands and stayed vocal from
Local pickleballers Natalie Bowskill and Jo Bussell have given Busselton plenty to cheer about, claiming silver in a competitive women’s doubles field at the Southern River Doubles Classic in Rockingham.
Natalie Bowskill, teamed up with Jo Bussell for the Women’s 60+ (3.5– 3.99) Doubles category, where the pair quickly proved they were more than capable of matching it with a strong field. They won three of their four pool matches, earning a place in the gold-medal play-off and keeping Busselton in the hunt right until the final game. The final did not fall their way, with their opponents producing the steadier game to win 15–5, but the result still capped off an impressive tournament for the Busselton duo. Their silver-medal finish adds to Natalie’s recent run of strong performances and highlights the growing standard of play developing at the local club.

the opening whistle through to extra time. The premiership completes an impressive turnaround from the opening finals loss and reinforces Busselton’s strength at junior level. For the players, coaches, families and supporters, it was a dramatic finish to the season — and a memorable way to make it two premierships in two years.
Both players said the weekend was as valuable off the court as it was on it, with the chance to watch other matches, learn from different playing styles and enjoy the friendly tournament atmosphere. They hope to see more Busselton players entering events in the future, noting that pickleball tournaments are organised by age and experience level, giving newer and seasoned players alike the chance to compete against others at a similar standard. The pair credited much of their form to the club’s regular Friday night drill sessions, held one week in three under the guidance of club coach Jayne de Silva.

On the other weeks, club-run sessions keep players practising the repetition of shots and court movement needed to build confidence in match play. For locals keen to give the sport a try, Busselton Pickleball Club offers sessions for both beginners and experienced players. Friday night is drills night, while organised social pickleball is held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings, with club members available to explain basic strokes, court positioning and scoring. Players who have built up their confidence are also encouraged to join the slightly more competitive Thursday night session, which still keeps the emphasis firmly on fun. BUSSELTON star Mitch Tenardi has finally added the SWFL’s biggest individual honour to an already decorated career, winning the 2026 Hayward Medal at the league’s awards night on Friday. Tenardi polled 27 votes to finish four clear of Bunbury’s Aidan Clarke, with Augusta Margaret River’s Jed Spence third on 20. The Busselton midfielder had twice finished runner-up for the medal and also completed a clean sweep of the major League honours, winning the Kia Media Player of the Year and the Platinum Supply Player of the Year, voted by coaches. He polled in 12 of 18 qualifying rounds and was judged best on ground six times, becoming the first Busselton player to win the Hayward Medal since Chris Kane in 2015. Busselton also featured prominently in the women’s count, with Beth Beckett finishing runner-up to Harvey Brunswick Leschenault’s Trinity Brown in the Nola Marino Medal. Brown claimed her second Nola Marino Medal with 23 votes, three ahead of Beckett, while fellow Magpies Rennie Meadmore and Maddy Obal finished equal fourth on 15 votes and Sarah Lang rounded out the top 10 on 10. Augusta Margaret River also celebrated a major individual success, with Colts co-captain Tomas Cassi-

Magpies set for monster showdown on Saturday THE stage is set for a huge South West Football League Grand Final day at Hands Memorial Oval, with premierships to be decided across League, Women’s, Reserves and Colts on Saturday. In the Dale Alcock Homes League, Bunbury booked a rematch with Busselton after defeating Donnybrook by 41 points in Sunday’s Preliminary Final.
their comeback win over HBL the previous week. HBL also advanced in the Solahart South West Reserves, overcoming Carey Park 8.7 (55) to 3.8 (26). The Panthers led by nine points at half-time, but the Lions took control with a five-goal third quarter before finishing strongly.

The Bulldogs led by 15 points at quarter-time and steadily built their advantage, with Kye Wright and Haydn Busher among the key contributors. Donnybrook stayed in touch through the second term, but Bunbury pulled away after halftime to win 14.11 (95) to 7.12 (54).
HBL will meet Bunbury in Saturday’s Reserves Grand Final. Augusta Margaret River’s Colts season ended one game short of the Grand Final, with South Bunbury prevailing by 11 points. The Tigers opened strongly

Cassidy polled a commanding 35 votes, six clear of HBL’s Riley Preece, continuing a strong recent run for Hawks players in the award after Harvey Fisher won in 2022 and Kaspa Donovan in 2023. The Hawks said Cassidy also shared the Colts Coaches Award after polling 39 votes and praised the young leader for the role he had played in the team’s strong season. Dunsborough also had two players finish inside the top 10 across the major counts. Caleb Stephens placed equal fourth in the Hayward Medal on 18 votes after sitting among the lead-

ers for much of the season, while Peter Rock finished fifth in the Colts medal with 16 votes. In the Reserves, Busselton’s Kobi Howell was the best-placed local player, finishing third in the Times Medal on 16 votes. Augusta Margaret River’s Anthony Marinovich and Busselton’s Tom Perks also made the top 10 with 11 votes each. The Times Medal itself finished in a tie, with Bunbury’s Jordan McGinley and Carey Park’s James Mead sharing the honour on 21 votes. For Busselton, though, the night belonged to Tenardi. Already a seven-time club best and fairest and a 2023 premiership player, the number three now has the Hayward Medal to add to the list.
The result sets up a much-anticipated Grand Final against Busselton, who advanced directly to the decider after their one-point Second Semi Final win. HARVEY Brunswick Leschenault created history in the Tronox Women’s competition, reaching their first Grand Final with a dominant 40-point win over Bunbury. The Lions burst out of the blocks through Maya Goudard, who kicked two first-quarter goals, and never relinquished control. Bunbury was held scoreless until the final term as HBL won 6.5 (41) to 0.1 (1).
The Lions will now face Busselton, who earned direct passage to the Grand Final with
fought their way back into the contest.
Goals to Kobi Walton, Cassidy Barr, Mitch Joliffe and Nate Poulsen helped Augusta Margaret River close the gap, but South Bunbury held firm to win 7.6 (48) to 5.8 (38). After finishing the regular season as minor premiers, the Hawks end their campaign in third place. South Bunbury will face Harvey Brunswick Leschenault in the Colts Grand Final. Grand Final day at Hands Memorial Oval begins with the Colts at 8.45am, followed by the Reserves at 11.30am, Women’s at 2.15pm and League Grand Final between Busselton and Bunbury at 4.25pm.
