Locals lament closure of beloved market bakery

ONE of Busselton’s best-loved bakeries will close its doors at Origins Market on Christmas Eve, with Dusty Buns owners Joel and Mel Benbow saying rising costs, staffing pressures and the personal toll of running the business have made its current model unsustainable. The couple announced the decision this week after “a great deal of thought, reflection and some incredibly difficult conversations”, with December 24 pencilled in as the bakery’s final day of trading at the West Street market. For a business accustomed to queues, sell-outs and glowing reviews, Joel said the difficult part was that Dusty Buns was not closing because customers had stopped coming. “In many ways, the hardest part of this decision is that we’ve never been busier,” he said. “We’re producing what I genuinely believe is the best baking of my entire career, creating new products every week and constantly pushing ourselves creatively. “The demand for our products has been incredible, and for that, we’re truly grateful.” Dusty Buns has developed a devoted following since opening at Origins Market, becoming known for its handmade pastries, sourdough, pies, sausage rolls, doughnuts and elaborate sweet creations. The bakery’s reputation grew quickly, becoming Busselton’s only five-star bakery within eight months of opening and regularly selling out. That popularity has endured.

Baker and business owner Joel Benbow says he and partner Mel are going out on a high - closing down their beloved Dusty Buns bakery at Origins Market while they remain one of the most popular spots in the South West for their sweet treats and pastry creations.

Dusty Buns was named the bakery winner for the South West and Margaret River region in the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide Readers’ Choice Awards, while its Google listing carries a five-star rating from more than 500 reviews. For Joel, the closure comes after almost three decades in an industry he entered as an apprentice baker in 1998. Over his career he has won multiple baking competitions, represented WA nationally and received the prestigious LA Judge Award in 2004. But he said commercial success had not been enough to overcome the realities of operating a small business with substantial overheads while trading only four days each week. “Sometimes, even when business is good, the numbers and the reality of running a small business simply don’t stack up,” he said. “Staff shortages, rising operating costs and the economics of operating a business with significant overheads but restricted trading

days have created challenges that are increasingly difficult to overcome.” Behind the financial pressures, however, has been an even greater personal cost. Joel said keeping pace with demand had seen him working more than 100 hours a week, seven days a week, while managing Crohn’s disease and the effects of three bulging discs in his back. “I’ve spent much of my working life pushing through, putting the business and our customers first,” he said. “But I have to acknowledge that my health and wellbeing need to become a priority. “As heartbreaking as this decision is, I know something has to change.” The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from customers, with hundreds responding online and describing Dusty Buns as a Busselton institution and, for some, the principal reason they visited Origins Market. Joel said he was enormously

proud of what the team had created and paid particular tribute to Mel, whose work behind the counter has become just as familiar to regular customers. “Anyone who has visited us knows the consistency, efficiency, care and love she brings to the business,” he said. “I couldn’t be prouder of her, and none of this would have been possible without her.” He also thanked staff member Elisha, former employees and the customers who have supported the business from its beginnings. While Christmas Eve will mark the end of their time at Origins Market, it may not necessarily be the end for Dusty Buns. Joel and Mel are exploring opportunities for a different production space which could allow them to continue baking under a more sustainable model with less pressure on their time and health. “Our hope is to find an environment that supports small business, encourages creativity and

gives us a realistic opportunity to build something sustainable for the future,” Joel said. “We’re hopeful that the right opportunity will come along, and if it does, we’ll certainly explore it.” Joel is also considering further study and other career opportunities, including the possibility of a move into politics. He said he was in the early stages of exploring the establishment of a federal political party, drawing in part on his experience as a small business owner and employer. No party has yet been established, with Joel describing the idea as exploratory while he gauges community interest. For now, however, there are still almost three months of croissants, pies, sourdough and sweet treats ahead before the ovens are due to switch off at Origins for the final time. Joel said that rather than viewing the decision as a failure, he wanted Dusty Buns to finish its chapter at the market with pride. “We’re going out on a high, not a low,” he said. “To every customer who has supported us, every person who has lined up for our baked goods, and everyone who has encouraged us along the way, thank you. “You’ve made this journey incredibly special.” He dedicated the bakery’s success to his mother, who he said had instilled in him the values that guided him throughout his working life. “This decision breaks my heart, but I’m proud of what we’ve built, grateful for the community that has supported us, and hopeful about what the future might hold.”

Mayor Phill Cronin said bringing Do to Saltwater represented another exciting addition to the venue’s growing program. “I am delighted that our community will have the opportunity to enjoy a performer of Anh Do’s calibre at Saltwater Theatre,” Mayor Cronin said. “Anh’s ability to combine humour, inspiration and genuine human connection has made him one of Australia’s most loved entertainers, and it is very exciting that Saltwater is

ONE of Australia’s most beloved entertainers will take to the stage in Busselton next year, with Anh Do bringing his acclaimed The Happiest Refugee Live to Saltwater. The bestselling author, comedian, actor and painter will perform at the Busselton venue in March 2027, marking the Saltwater theatre’s first stand-up comedy performance. Based on Do’s bestselling memoir The Happiest Refugee, the national touring production combines comedy and storytelling with family photographs and film footage to tell the remarkable story of his journey from fleeing Vietnam as a child to becoming one of Australia’s best-known entertainers. After arriving in Australia as a young refugee, Do and his family faced language barriers, financial hardship and bullying as they established a new life. He later studied law before choosing a very different career path and establishing himself as a comedian, actor and television personality. With his trademark warmth and humour, The Happiest Refugee Live explores the experiences and people that shaped his life, with a story centred on family, resilience, determination and optimism. The production has toured extensively around Australia, earning standing ovations for its combination of comedy and deeply personal storytelling.

CHRISTMAS magic will be shared with 20 local families doing it tough this year, thanks to a partnership between Busselton photographer Abby Murray and local business owners Sonia and Chris Rigoll. Abby is preparing for her ‘Personalised Santa Experience’ promotion in the lead-up to Christmas, but alongside the festive photo sessions, she wanted to continue a tradition particularly close to her heart. Each year, she offers five free photo shoots to families facing difficult circumstances, whether it is a single parent working hard to provide for their children or a family dealing with cancer, illness or other challenges. “I just want to give back at a time that can be tough for many,” Abby said. Last year, she invited people to nominate friends and family members who could benefit from a shoot. The response made such an impression that five sessions quickly became many more. “I was so touched when the referrals came in that I ended up offering free shoots to the majority of people,” she said. “I just couldn’t believe the stories of strength and courage and just what mums do to keep their heads above water.” Expecting Christmas 2026 to be particularly difficult for some households, Abby decided she wanted to reach even more families. She approached several businesses looking for someone willing to help expand the initiative, initially without success. Then came a chance meeting with Sonia

Sonia and Chris Rigoll were quick to jump on board with photographer Abby Murray (centre) as she prepares to once again offer some Christmas cheer to local families doing it tough.

and Chris from Busselton Agency. Within about 30 seconds of Abby explaining what she hoped to achieve, she said, both had agreed to help. “It made me a little emotional knowing that by having their help I could offer my personalised Father Christmas meet and greets along with family photos,” Abby said. “I could even offer some small gifts perhaps too.” With Busselton Agency’s sponsorship, 20 local families will now be offered the opportunity to have a special photograph with Father Christmas or a professional family portrait. For Sonia and Chris, saying yes was an easy decision. “At Busselton Agency, we have always believed that being a local business is about

more than simply doing business in our community,” Sonia said. “It’s about being part of the community and supporting the people and families who make Busselton such a special place to live.” Sonia said Christmas could be a wonderful time for families, but the financial and practical pressures of the season could also make it difficult. The partnership was a chance to give families something that may seem simple now, but could become increasingly precious with time. “For us, it’s really about creating memories,” she said. “A photograph might seem like a small thing, but years from now that image can become something incredibly special for a family — a moment in time they can look back on and treasure.” Importantly, Sonia said the focus should remain firmly on the people receiving the gift. “We didn’t want this to be about Busselton

Agency — we wanted it to be about the families,” she said. “If we can help give 20 families a beautiful Christmas memory that they can keep forever, then we’re absolutely delighted to be involved.” Chris said the initiative captured what the festive season should be about. “Christmas is about family, connection and a little bit of magic,” he said. “We’re really proud to support Abby’s idea and look forward to seeing the smiles when the families meet Santa.” Abby is now asking the community to help find the families who could benefit most. Locals can nominate a friend, relative or another family doing it tough by emailing Abby with a brief explanation of their circumstances and the nominee’s contact details. “I am so excited to bring a little Christmas magic this year,” Abby said. To nominate a local family, email Abby at abbymurrayphotography@gmail.com.

Sun comes out for Jetty walkers to mark start of Mental Health Week

response.

MORE than 60 walkers took to the Busselton foreshore last week, joining communities around Australia in stepping out to support mental health research and conversation.

Funds raised through registrations and sponsorship will go directly to Australian Rotary Health to support mental health research in Australia.

Busselton Geographe Bay Rotary Club held its fourth annual Lift the Lid Walk on Saturday, October 3, coinciding with the beginning of WA Mental Health Week. Participants completed the 1.8km walk from Busselton Jetty along the foreshore and back, joining a national initiative raising funds for mental health research through Australian Rotary Health. Busselton Geographe Bay Rotary Club is part of an Australian volunteer network of around 30,000 Rotarians, with Rotary clubs around the country hosting their own Lift the Lid walks. Some attract crowds of up to 600 people, but organisers said the purpose extends beyond the number of people taking part. The walks are deliberately designed to show the difference communities can make at a local level — starting conversations about mental health and bringing together adults, children, community services, businesses and other organisations to create genuine connections where they live. With more than 60 walkers joining the Busselton event, organisers were delighted with the local

The Busselton walk was supported by local sponsors Total Horticultural Services, Workclobber, Retravision, Battery World and Beachside Chiropractic, as well as photographer Abby Murray who donated her time to the cause.

Adult registrations included a Lift the Lid Walk shirt, while children aged 15 and under could participate free of charge, with walkers also coming together for a breakfast burger after completing the course. The annual event forms part of Australian Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid on Mental Illness initiative, encouraging communities to raise awareness and funds for mental health research while helping break down barriers around conversations about mental wellbeing. For Busselton Geographe Bay Rotary Club, that combination of research funding and meaningful local connection is particularly important. Club members said there had never been a more important time to play a role in supporting mental health within local communities while contributing to the wider Australian research effort.

A FAMILIAR Busselton resident with plenty of personality is about to become the star of a new children’s book inspired by one of the South West’s best-known landmarks. Local author Liesl Dowling, who writes as Dorothy Dowling, has created What’s in Monty’s Pouch?, following the adventures of Monty, a pelican who makes his home around the Busselton Jetty. For Liesl, the idea began with the Jetty itself and the generations of families who have memories tied to the landmark. “I really wanted to write something about the Busselton Jetty because it is such a loved part of this community and such a beautiful place,” she said. “Pelicans, in particular, seem made for children’s stories. They are comical and beautiful, slightly mysterious, and they naturally arouse curiosity and imagination.” But Monty also carries a deeply personal connection. Liesl lost her sister Lexie to breast cancer two years

Michelle’s illustrations even feature the beloved Jetty Train.

Local author Dorothy Dowling (left) and illustrator Michelle Babb (right) have collaborated on the first in what is xpected to be a series of children’s books, featuring a cast of characters who all live around the Busselton Jetty.

The book, which is launching today at Shelter Brewing Co on the foreshore, features the iconic Busselton Jetty, and follows the adventures of Monty the pelican who makes him home in Geographe Bay. Images supplied.

ago, and said Lexie had adored pelicans, particularly watching them skid across the water as they landed. “Seeing one makes me think of her,” she said. Monty’s Busselton world has been brought to life by

born-and-bred local artist Michelle Babb, whose original watercolour illustrations capture the Jetty, foreshore, birds and coastline. The pair met through Hippo Lakes Café, where proprietor Liz introduced Liesl

to Michelle after mentioning her cook was also an artist. After initially pursuing other options, Liesl and Michelle eventually reunited over coffee and discovered they shared the same vision for Monty. “She took all of that information and somehow drew the Monty I had been carrying around in my imagination,” Liesl said. Michelle’s connection to the local environment also meant plenty of firsthand research. “One of my favourite stories about Michelle is that someone once rang her and asked what she was doing,” Liesl said.

“Her answer was, ‘I’m at the beach sketching seagulls.’” A local nurse and midwife, Liesl’s path to children’s writing also grew from profound loss. After her son Alex died in an accident aged 17, her husband encouraged her to write down the stories she had made up for her children, including one Alex had particularly loved. That story became her first children’s book, Chookity Chook, and writing became a way of finding joy again. What’s in Monty’s Pouch? is now set to become the first book in a planned Monty and Friends series, with

future characters including Gerald the blue manna crab, Cyril the seagull, Dolly the dolphin and Ottilie the octopus. The book will be launched at Shelter Brewing’s Function Room on the Busselton Foreshore today, Wednesday October 7, with readings every half hour from 3.30pm and a final reading at 7pm. Early-childhood teacher Emily Patterson will join the readings, while Liesl and Michelle will sign books and Monty will make another debut — as a plush toy children can take home. “I’d love him to become a familiar little part of childhood in Busselton,” Liesl said, “and perhaps one day a character children remember fondly long after they’ve grown up.” To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/dorothydowling

Local’s internship makes a lasting impact on future A BUSSELTON student has turned a university internship into an opportunity to give back to the community she grew up in, while helping improve inclusion and accessibility across the South West. Tegan Espinos, who is studying a Bachelor of Science in Genetics, recently completed a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with Advocacy WA in Bunbury. She said choosing a regional placement was important to her. “I was particularly interested in working in a regional area as I wanted to make a genuine impact in the community I was raised in,” she said. Advocacy WA works to promote inclusion, accessibility and participation for people with disability, and Tegan joined the organisation’s Community Projects Team. Her role covered everything from research and communications to workshops, social groups and community events. Tegan began by researching employment outcomes for people with disability, including barriers to employment and the policies that can contribute to inequality. She also helped develop accessible resources and supported events designed to create stronger social connections. “My favourite part of the internship was supporting inclusive community events and social groups,” she said.

Tegan Espinos says her recent internship with Advocacy WA had changed the way she looks at everyday spaces - considering how accessible and suitable they are for everyone, and the importance of inclusive design.

“I had the opportunity to connect directly with community members and help create welcoming spaces where people felt valued, included and connected.” Tegan said hearing directly from people with lived experience of disability had been one of the most valuable parts of the placement. “Meeting such inspiring people gave greater purpose to the work I was doing and reinforced the importance of creating a more inclusive community,” she said. Her supervisor, Advocacy WA Community Projects Manager Larissa Beeby, praised Tegan’s ability to work across a broad range of tasks. She said Tegan moved confidently between research, community engagement, workshop support, communications and direct

assistance to participants. The experience has also changed the way Tegan looks at everyday spaces. “I now find myself constantly noticing whether businesses, community spaces and public facilities are physically accessible,” she said. “It has made me much more aware of the importance of inclusive design.” While the internship strengthened her research, teamwork and communication skills, Tegan said some of the most important lessons were empathy, active listening and recognising the impact of small actions. “These are skills that can’t be taught in a classroom and will benefit me regardless of where my career takes me,” she said.

R

ecently, I advocated for our local, state and federal representatives to help pull the necessary regulatory levers to enable the electrification of the freight corridor from Perth to Augusta. Some of you who have followed my interest in this issue may remember the mixed, and mostly negative, responses I received. The only genuine interest and assistance I received came from Libby Mettam, despite the fact that we disagreed in principle on some aspects of the issue. So it was with great delight that I read that Purpose Energy intends to roll out three electric truck charging hubs at Forrestfield, Kwinana and Bunbury. My only disappointment is the location of the southern hub in Bunbury rather than here in Busselton. Could this be a missed opportunity for our city? On the positive side, Busselton should still benefit from the transition away from diesel-powered freight vehicles. Electrification has the potential to reduce reliance on imported fuels, provide greater energy-price certainty and, ultimately, contribute to quieter and cleaner freight

Could electrification of the freight corridor between Perth and the South West provide cleaner, quieter transport in our region?

transport throughout our region. I also believe this shift to electric transport supports Frank Bear’s recent letter (Letters, September 23) about maintaining the peaceful ascetic of our region and the maintenance of our beautiful environment. I believe we should all welcome the prospect of quieter, cleaner and potentially more economical freight transport for the goods and services we rely on every day. Purpose Energy describes its project as establishing Western Australia’s first integrated network of shared-use electric truck charging hubs. The planned network is expected to provide 36 high-capacity charging bays and two battery-swapping stations across Forrestfield, Kwinana and Bun-

bury. The proposed Bunbury charging hub will include twelve high-capacity charging bays and one battery-swapping station, servicing freight electrification in the South West. This is a significant step towards electrifying heavy freight in Western Australia. It also raises an important question for Busselton: if we are serious about becoming a cleaner, quieter and more energy-secure regional city, should we be doing more to position Busselton as part of the emerging electric freight network? Perhaps the announcement from Purpose Energy is not just good news for the South West, but an opportunity for Busselton to consider what comes next. Stay safe, find solutions not problems. ll things happen within a context and if we are not aware of the context we risk failing to understand the true nature of a person’s or a nation’s words of a persons or nation’s actions. The context of Zomi Frankcoms’

words and actions was her desire to make a difference for good. She saw a need and decided to do something about it. She was, in many respects, a beautiful human being, a woman of great courage and compassion. Her life deserves to be celebrated, her death mourned, and those responsible or her death, to be held accountable. The Rule of Law holds that in places of conflict non-combatants are not to be targeted. This is clearly spelt out in the Geneva conventions and in the Rules of Engagement of many defence forces. Thus aid vehicles, clearly marked, schools and hospitals, medical personnel, aid workers, journalists and civilians are not to be targeted. Tragically in Gaza, evidence exist where some of the above have been deliberately targeted by the Israeli defence force. Some would argue that because of the atrocities of October 7th “all bets are off ” that the deaths of over 74,000 people, the majority women and children, the leveling of 50 percent of all structures in Gaza and the damaging of a further 32 percent, and the displacement of 90 percent of the entire population would have not occurred but for the actions of Hamas in the

October 7. A policy now described as “genocide”, by many people, world leaders and the United Nations. What if the ongoing actions of the Israeli Government and the Israeli Defence Force are a result of the deliberate policy to forcibly remove all Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank? That October 7 was not the cause of their ongoing actions but rather the opportunity to implement the objective that some have had since 1948. The extreme and the ongoing nature of the actions, give credibility to the above as their actions go well beyond a response to October 7 and rather point to a much bigger and long held objective. Tragically a monumental failure of Israeli Intelligence has unleashed the “dogs of war” on so many innocent people.

IN YOUR PATCH with TERRI SHARPE

IT’S EASY to garden in spring as the clear, warm weather ensures outdoor pursuits are delightful. But a successful garden requires work and planning. True gardening success requires a year-round commitment. If however, like many of us it’s the spring weather that gets you outside and into your neglected garden, here’s a few lessons that will improve your chances of success. Prune back dead wood on any dormant ornaments, like hydrangeas for example. Check all fruit trees and cut back dead wood, crossing branches, and anything diseased. Dispose of your waste carefully. Apply neem oil on citrus to ensure new growth is citrus leaf miner free. I also apply a trace element foliar spray, copper, or sulphur if any of my edible fruit trees show signs of pests or disease. Cut your lawn, weed it, and fertilise. Keep the reticulation off until as late as possible. Every drop counts. Plant your summer crops according to soil temperature, rather than a calendar date. As a rule of thumb, plant pollinators 1 to 10. I like edible self-seeders like Californian poppies and violas. But you’ll see mass planting of everlastings and strawflowers in the Margaret River Primary School edibles garden and South Regional TAFE Margaret River campus. Both flowers are covered in native and European bees.

Can you help??? For the month of October, donate your used six cell seedling punnets to the Margaret River Community Pantry.

October should allow planting of summer favourites like sunflowers, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and beans. Plant with plenty of growing room around each plant and resist the temptation to crowd or plant closer than the recommended spacing. You’ll regret it later with plants that will be fighting each other for food, water, space, and

Hi, I’m Bella

light. These plants will often produce inferior growth and fruit and may succumb more readily to pests and diseases. Despite what you may see on AI, I’d wait on planting basil and corn until next month, except in all but the most sheltered micro-climates in the region. It’s now time to ensure you have no bare soil in your garden beds. Apply mulch 50 to 70mm thick. Too thin and weeds will come through, too thick and the very moisture you are trying to trap will be repelled. For my veggie beds, I prefer softer mulches that decompose over time adding a slow-release nutrient rich layer over summer. Larger established trees can handle harder mulches like woodchip that take longer to decompose but importantly continue to keep our soils cool and help retain the diversity and number of microorganisms in our soil – so crucial for effective plant growth processes. Leave a gap around stems or trunks to prevent collar rot. I include tomatoes in this rule. Also remove tomato leaves that are touching surrounding soil to minimise the likelihood of fungal spread. Put your stakes or supports in now, while your seedlings are small. Pinch our any shoots between lateral growers and the main stem. They are easy to spot. It may seem strange but try a little experiment if you’re not con-

vinced – twotomato plants growing as neighbours, pinch one, and see how both plants fair over time in terms of growth, health, and number and quality of fruit. THE Margaret River Community Pantry has a big idea in mind for this year’s Christmas Street Parade. The Pantry is asking the community to donate six cell used plastic seedling punnets. While school holidays are on, they can be dropped into Bunnings Margaret River, Mitre 10 Margaret River, South Regional TAFE Margaret River, Margaret River Community Garden, and the Community Pantry. For the remainder of October when school returns, you can also drop them into Margaret River Primary School, Montessori Primary School, Rapids Landing Primary School, Karridale Primary School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, and Margaret River Independent School. All donated punnets will be used in the 2026 Christmas Street Parade in Margaret River Thursday December 17, from 4pm. You’ll have to attend to find out what the Pantry’s got in store for them – and you. Happy October planting, and if I can leave with one line of advice it’ll be this - get those tomatoes in the ground right now!

Early detection is key

HEALTH SOUTH West residents are being urged to get to know what is normal for their breasts and seek medical advice if they notice any unusual changes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. Cancer Council WA South West Regional Cancer Prevention Coordinator Emma Handreck said awareness of the body was an important part of detecting possible breast cancer early. “Get to know your breasts and what is normal for you, and if something feels off, trust yourself and get it checked; your future self will thank you,” she said. Possible symptoms can include a lump or hard area in the breast or underarm, changes in the size or shape of the breast, redness or rash, changes to the nipple, persistent pain or discomfort, or an area of the breast that feels different from the rest. Ms Handreck said anyone concerned about a change should make

Busselton resident Kitty McQueen is urging locals to advocate for their health, by speaking to their GP and seeking advice when things change.

an appointment with their doctor, clinic nurse or Aboriginal health worker, particularly if the symptom had lasted for four weeks or more. “Most changes won’t be cancer, but if you notice anything different or unusual for you, it’s best to get it checked,” she said. “If it is breast cancer, finding it early gives you the best chance of

successful treatment.” Busselton breast cancer advocate Kitty McQueen also encouraged people to speak up about their health. “Go to your GP, ask the question, and advocate for your health,” she said. In 2022, 150 women in the South West were diagnosed with breast cancer and 26 died from the disease. Across WA, 2090 women were diagnosed and 291 died in the same year. BreastScreen WA offers free mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 74, while women aged 40 to 49 and over 75 are also eligible. Anyone who notices a change should not wait for a scheduled screening appointment and should seek medical advice. More information is available at findcancerearly.com.au or by calling Cancer Connect on 13 11 20. BreastScreen WA can be contacted on 13 20 50.

Snake spotting prompts warning for playground LOCAL NEWS FAMILIES are being urged to take extra care at the Vasse Nature Playground following reports of a snake living close to the popular play area. The City of Busselton issued an alert after the snake was sighted in close proximity to the playground, advising visitors to remain aware of their surroundings while using the area. While snakes are a natural part of the local environment, the City has asked people to stay on designated paths where possible, closely supervise children and wear enclosed footwear. Temporary signage will also be installed around the playground to alert visitors to the snake’s presence. The City acknowledged the sighting may cause

concern among some community members and said it was investigating options for potentially relocating the animal. However, snakes are protected native wildlife and can be difficult to safely locate and capture unless they pose an immediate risk and can be found when licensed wildlife professionals attend. The City said it would continue monitoring the situation and seek advice from appropriately licensed wildlife professionals as required. Anyone who spots the snake is urged to keep a safe distance and not attempt to approach, catch or handle it. Sightings should instead be reported to the City of Busselton.

This weekend, the Busselton Jetty will host the Steps of Hope fundraising event for Telethon, with all proceeds going directly to the research charity.

Stories to join on the Jetty WHAT’S ON | TELETHON

Australians.

TWO remarkable Telethon stories spanning almost six decades will come together on Busselton Jetty this Saturday for a special community fundraising event.

Busselton Jetty CEO Lisa Shreeve said bringing the pair together would make the event particularly meaningful.

Scott Guerini OAM, founder of Scott’s Great Walk, and South West local Maryanne Lazarides, Telethon’s first Telethon child in 1968, will take part in Steps of Hope: Busselton Jetty Telethon Giving Day on October 10. Scott has been named an ambassador for the event and will spend the day walking the length of the 1.8km Jetty, encouraging community members to join him and help raise funds for Telethon. He began walking and fundraising for Telethon at just four years old and has since covered thousands of kilometres, raising more than $200,000 for WA children. Joining him will be Maryanne Lazarides, whose connection to Telethon goes back to its very beginning. As the first Telethon child in 1968, Maryanne represents an extraordinary link to the history of the annual fundraiser and the generations of children and families who have benefited from the generosity of Western

“It is incredibly special to have Scott and Maryanne together at Steps of Hope,” she said. “Scott has dedicated much of his life to walking for Telethon, while Maryanne’s story takes us right back to where Telethon began. “Together, they remind us why we continue to walk, give and support WA children and families.” Ms Shreeve encouraged locals to head to the Jetty, meet Scott and Maryanne and walk alongside them during the day. Steps of Hope will run from 9am to 3pm, with participants invited to walk one or several lengths of the Jetty, or simply come along and support the event. Registration is $5, with 100 per cent of the fee donated directly to Telethon. The event will be held at Busselton Jetty on Saturday, October 10. To register, go to stepsofhope.telethon7.com

Pads on for an early start to season

ALLAN MILLER CRICKET THE earliest ever start to a Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association season will be equalled this Saturday when round one of C-Grade gets under way. Only once before in the 115-year history of the BMRCA has the season started as early as October 10. The early start is attributable to the record number of nine teams in C-Grade, which means one team will have a bye each weekend. In this Saturday’s opening round of C-Grade starting at 1pm, Cowaramup will be at home to Dunsborough White at Cowaramup, St Marys will host Nannup at Churchill Park, Dunsborough Blue will play Vasse at the Dunsborough Playing Fields and YOBS Academy will meet YOBS in the club derby at Bovell Park 4. Margaret River Hawks will have the bye. The A-Grade and B-Grade competitions will get under way the following Saturday, October 17. The long winter has limited the numbers at early season training and most clubs are still looking for new faces to fill their sides. Umpires are also being sought for the BMRCA competition, particularly for the B-Grade and

C-Grade levels. Any former players interested in umpiring can contact the umpires coordinator at missingoff@hotmail.com for more information. While many clubs are still in the process of organising their B-Grade and C-Grade captains, the skippers for all six A-Grade sides have now been confirmed for the 2026-27 season. Shane Joyce will captain Marga-

ret River Hawks, Haig Colombera will captain Yallingup-Oddbods, Jeremy Murphy will captain Vasse, Zoraiz Saeed will captain St Marys, Cain Reynolds will captain Dunsborough and Fraser Oates will again captain Cowaramup, as the Bulls search for their third A-Grade flag in a row. ed visas to play in our competition. However, three clubs have managed to overcome the obstacles in getting an overseas player, these lucky clubs are Cowaramup, Dunsborough and Vasse. Allrounder Ben Cox from Birmingham, who proved so valuable for Cowaramup in 2023-24, is returning for his second season with the Bulls, while Cowaramup have also obtained a young batsman in Tom Saunders from Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Dunsborough have secured a top order batsman and legspin bowler from the UK named Ben Martin, and Vasse have gained a new UK player named Nehal Butt. Butt is a right-arm opening bowler and middle-order batsman who should prove a valuable acquisition for Vasse, said club president Matt Enright. Dunsborough also have top bowler Anthony Quinn from New Zealand returning for the season, according to club president Cam Morris. Top order batsman Tim Reynolds and fast bowler Harry Sutherland will again be among Dunsborough’s key prospects in A-Grade this season. Dunsborough have named Kane Bayer (B-Grade), Ben Cadd (Dunsborough White) and Mat

Lepidi (Dunsborough Blue) to skipper their lower grade sides. Nannup have again named Lachlan Smith, last year’s C-Grade Cricketer of the Year, to captain their C-Grade side. “We should be okay with our numbers this year, we have picked up a few players,” said Nannup president Pieter Bresser. Bresser said Nannup are starting their 25th year in the BMRCA and will celebrate the season by hosting a Pink Stumps Day, a Reconciliation Round and a Mental Health Round in what looks to be a busy season. This weekend’s Country Cup competition in Geraldton will see strong representation by Busselton-Margaret River players. BMRCA is one of the four teams competing in the Cup, while another side, Country Colts, will feature many Under-21s from our region. The preliminary Country Colts squad named no fewer than seven BMRCA players, these being Sam and Tom Joyce, Ky South, Aaron Mattock, Kieran and Sean Zahra and Rory Calhoun. After competing in the Country Cup, the Country Colts will also play in Perth’s T20 Colts knockout competition in November.

Earlier this year, former club president and life member Julie Fairclough (second left), son Mitch Fairclough(far right) and the Realmark Dunsborough team visited the Sharks, where Julie was presented with a club guernsey in recognition of her support and work to develop football in the region.

Social footy returns AFL | SHARKS DUNSBOROUGH’S popular AFL 9’s competition returns this week, with ten weeks of fast, social and inclusive football set to bring players from across the region together. The Dunsborough Sharks Football Club’s AFL 9’s competition kicks off on Thursday, October 8, running each Thursday night through to the grand final on December 10. Now entering its sixth season, the competition began as a pilot program and was the first club-run AFL 9’s competition in WA approved by the WA Football Commission. Since then, it has grown into a popular fixture attracting teams from Dunsborough, Busselton and surrounding areas, including local businesses, sporting groups, gyms, social clubs, former players and people simply looking to give football a go. AFL 9’s is a modified version of Australian rules football designed to be quicker, simpler and more social than the traditional game, with an emphasis on participation and fun. Inclusivity remains an important part of the Dunsborough competition, with teams required to have at least three female players on the field at all times. The club hopes that participation will continue to grow ahead of the anticipated launch of a Dunsborough Sharks Women’s Masters team in 2027. Realmark Dunsborough has

come on board as naming rights sponsor for the 2026 season, extending a relationship with the Sharks that stretches back to the club’s early years. The agency has sponsored the Sharks’ League jumper for the past four seasons, while members of the Realmark team have longstanding personal connections with local football. Principal Julie Fairclough is a former president and Life Member of the Dunsborough Junior Football Club and a past South West Country Football Association Volunteer of the Year. Both of her sons have played for Dunsborough, with son Mitch Fairclough now working alongside her at Realmark Dunsborough. Realmark’s Lance Hart has also coached junior teams over several seasons while continuing to play for the Dunsborough Ducks. “Realmark has always believed in supporting local initiatives that bring people together,” Ms Fairclough said. “The AFL 9’s Competition is a fantastic example of football creating opportunities for participation, connection and fun for people of all ages and abilities.” The Sharks said the relaxed format meant the competition was equally suited to experienced footballers, former players returning to the game and complete beginners. The competition begins on Thursday, October 8, with matches continuing weekly until the grand final on December 10.

An Open Day hosted by the Geographe Outriggers Club on October 24 will give experienced paddlers and complete beginners the chance to meet the club members and try outrigger paddling for themselves, in the beautiful waters of Geographe Bay.

New paddlers invited aboard GEOGRAPHE Outriggers are preparing to launch their 2026/27 season with an Open Day and beginner paddling program designed to welcome newcomers onto the water. The club’s Open Day will be held on Saturday, October 24 at its shed inside Geographe Bay Yacht Club, giving experienced paddlers, returning members and complete beginners the chance to meet the crew and try outrigger paddling for themselves. Outrigger canoes are 42-foot vessels fitted with an ama, or outrigger, for stability. Each canoe carries six paddlers, with the sixth also responsible for steering. With roots in ancient Polynesian and Hawaiian traditions, the

sport combines fitness, teamwork and time on the water, with opportunities for both social and competitive paddling. Geographe Outriggers added a new ultra-lightweight Hydra canoe to its fleet last year with assistance from the City of Busselton’s Community Assistance Program. The fully carbon canoe is significantly lighter than traditional craft, making it easier to move on and off the water and giving the club access to a faster, more modern style of paddling. Following the Open Day, qualified coach Jill Johansen will lead a four-week Introduction to Paddling course beginning on Saturday, October 31. The program will cover basic

paddling technique, water safety, teamwork and the history of outrigger paddling, with plenty of time spent on the bay. The four-week course costs $50, with the fee deducted from club membership costs for participants who decide to join. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle, hat, shorts and rashie. The Open Day begins at 9am on Saturday, October 24, with the four-week course starting at 9am the following Saturday. Geographe Outriggers are based at 1 King Street, Busselton, inside Geographe Bay Yacht Club. More information is available at geographeoutriggers.org.au.

Tigers roar into action

NICKY LEFEBVRE CRICKET A NEW chapter for local cricket is taking shape, with the Busselton Margaret River Tigers hitting the field for their first Come & Try game as the region’s new female team gathers momentum. Following initial Come & Try training sessions at the Sir Stewart Bovell training nets, the Tigers welcomed a group of women from Bunbury for a friendly game on Sunday. The afternoon brought players together for cricket, fun and plenty of new friendships, with organisers already suggesting the get-together could become an annual event. South West Cricket Manager Sam Cunningham joined the players on the field and got involved in the action, while Pete Bresser, Danny Weston and Matt Lepidi were also on hand to support the new team.

Come and Try days are allowing women to learn more and try their hand at the game of cricket, as the newly created Busselton Margaret River Tigers women’s team continues their training program ahead of the summer cricket season. Images: BMRCA

Veronica Lepidi kept the players well fuelled, providing afternoon tea for the group. The game came after the tryout sessions, designed to encourage local women and girls to give cricket a go, whether they are experienced players, returning to the sport or picking up a cricket ball for the first time. And while the Tigers are now up and running, there is still plenty of room in the squad. The team is continuing to recruit new players and is encouraging women and girls of all skill levels to head along, meet the group and have a go. The next Tigers training session will be held at the Bovell training nets from 4.30pm on Wednesday, October 7. No previous cricket experience is required. Local women squash the competition

BUSSELTON’S female squash players have enjoyed a standout month, recording strong results across international, state and national competitions. At the 2026 World Squash Masters Championships in Perth, Busselton’s Kitty McQueen claimed the Plate title in the Women’s 35+ division. The international event attracted more than 900 competitors from over 55 countries, with players aged from 35 through to 85-plus contesting 21 divisions across eight days. Just weeks later, Busselton had eight women competing across three divisions at the WA Country Week Teams Championships from September 25–27. The 2026 event marked the 60th anniversary of Country Week, and Busselton made history with the trio of Bec Treasure, Kelsie Docking and Emma Handreck winning the Ladies A Grade division for

the first time. The result went one better than 2025, when Busselton finished runner-up. Treasure, Louise Moss and Docking were also recognised among the tournament’s top female performers, with all three named in the four-player 2026 Ladies All-Stars team. Busselton junior Lucy MacKenzie has also continued the club’s strong run of results after being

selected to represent Western Australia in the Under 13 Girls division at the Australian Junior Championships in Devonport, Tasmania. The 12-year-old has now represented WA at the national championships in consecutive years, with around 175 of Australia’s leading junior players taking part in the 2026 event.

Within the space of a month, Busselton women and girls have represented the club from junior state level through to Country Week and the World Masters stage. The results cap a strong period for women’s squash in Busselton and underline the growing depth of female talent within the local club.
