Rika pulled out much of her rose garden, keeping just four favourites, and replanted with natives including correas, callistemons, grevilleas, lemon myrtle, pimelia, eremophila, chorizema, billy buttons and boronia. “The fragrance, beauty and joy which emanated in the first year gave me a renewed appreciation of the unique and spiritual properties of the Australian bush right outside my door,” she said. From there, the incense idea began to take shape. Rika started studying incense-making online and experimenting privately, gradually learning how botanicals, woods and resins

Ingredients are considered as top, middle and base notes, with sharper or fruitier scents sitting above woody, herbaceous and longer-lasting elements. One of her first successful blends was Rose Gold, made with Western Australian sandalwood powder, frankincense, lemon myrtle and red roses from her garden. “It’s still a regular favourite in my collection,” she said. Where possible, Rika sources Australian ingredients, including Western Australian sandalwood and Queensland-grown agarwood, while growing bay leaves, mint, lemon myrtle, rosemary and jasmine herself.

Some traditional ingredients, such as frankincense, still need to come from overseas. “There is something quite satisfying about using local botanicals, knowing where it’s grown, if it’s gathered sustainably, perhaps energetically resulting in a deeper connection to the fragrance,” she said. The pottery side of her creative process evolved in a new direction, as the incense developed. Each holder is individually made, kilnfired and glazed in Rika’s studio, with forms influenced by the monumental coastal rocks she has seen along local walking tracks. She wanted them to feel handmade, not just look handmade. “The incense holders are not just functional — they are tactile,” she said. “I wanted people to be able to touch them and feel they are handcrafted.” The pieces are finished with washable, food-safe glazes and can also be used as small vessels. In Rika Rouw’s light-filled Margaret River studio, the connection between her two creative worlds makes immediate sense. Light pours through the space. The air carries the scent of her garden, mingling with the familiar earthy aromas of timber, clay and a pottery practice built over more than four decades. Now those long-established surroundings have become the home of something new. Rika has launched Margaret River Incense, a small-batch collection combining handcrafted natural incense with individually made pottery incense holders, drawing inspiration from the region’s landscape, botanicals and sense of place. The idea began with a simple question: could she create an alternative to commercial incense using natural ingredients, without artificial glues and unnecessary additives, while still continuing the pottery she loved? “I wanted to create a product that was uniquely Margaret River,” Rika said. “I could think of nothing more evocative than incense, because fragrance evokes emotions and memories more strongly than any other sense.” The answer, she realised, was already growing around her. Outside her kitchen door were lavender, roses, lime and lemon trees, bay leaves, herbs, flowers and even a pomegranate. In the pantry were cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and ginger. Then came a bigger change.

“The more you learn, the less you know — it’s a lifetime obsession. Same with the incense.” That learning process has given her a renewed sense of purpose. She is continuing to refine her blends, deepen her understanding of incense traditions and grow more plants for future use. Margaret River Incense is now available through Rika’s online store, and she will also take part in the Spirit of Christmas Fair at Reuther Park on Saturday, November 21, giving people the chance to experience the pottery and fragrances in person. For a maker who has spent decades working with earth and fire, the move into fragrance feels less like a departure and more like an extension. Clay, garden, smoke and scent now sit side by side in the same light-filled studio — each carrying a little of Margaret River with them.

MIND-ED | COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

MIND-ED is committed to promoting organisations that strengthen mental health and wellbeing in our region. For their latest spotlight feature, Mind-Ed asked Lamp Inc about their Art Recovery Workshops, exploring how creativity, connection, and self-expression can support wellbeing in a safe and inclusive environment. Can you tell us about the Art Recovery Workshop? During the Art for recovery workshops, we offer creative activities to help people explore emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-awareness, and communicate experiences that may be hard to express in words. The focus is usually on the process of creating, rather than making ‘good’ art. What inspired the creation of the workshop? Lamp Inc has been offering community-based mental health support for 30 years. The current Lamp Inc Day-2-Day program offers Art Recovery in Busselton, and we have Margaret River participants who travel to attend. This inspired Lamp Inc to improve mental health in the broader community, by creating a new space to outreach in Margaret River. Who is the workshop designed for? This workshop is designed for any adults experiencing Mental Health challenges who are looking for community connection in a non-clinical, safe space. Lamp Inc celebrates the diversity of our community, and this is an all-inclusive workshop and we welcome NDIS participants, LGBTQI+ and people who are Neurodivergent. The focus of this workshop is not artistic skill, although if you have some creative talent, that’s a bonus! We are focused on connection, safety, and emotional regulation in a non-judgemental space. Our facilitator, Sam is a qualified Art Therapist, and Sarah has a Degree in Positive Psychology. Together Sarah and Sam facilitate this Art Workshop combining art and science to create a more intentional Art Recovery program. Positive Psychology focuses on a more strengths-based approach to mental health. It uses evidence-based strategies to help people to thrive!

Workshop facilitators Sam and Sarah create a welcoming space for connection, creativity and self-expression through Lamp Inc’s Art Recovery Workshops in Margaret River. Photo: Mind-Ed

Participants will engage in art activities with elements of Positive Psychology, such as gratitude, strengths, meaning or mindfulness. What does a typical workshop feel like for someone walking in for the first time? The Wash House at the Margaret River Community Centre is a cozy intimate space where we all gather around a shared table to participate in creative activities with intention. We have the warm heaters on, low sensory lighting and music, with colourful buntings along the ceiling. All the art materials are provided at no extra cost.

Why is creative expression and peer connection important to mental health recovery? Expressing ourselves through creativity is a form of play, and it is so important to play! Art is a creative way to express ourselves safely, to stay grounded and focus on the present. Sarah and Sam have lived-experience with their own mental health challenges, and work alongside you on the activities as peers. What are the current workshop details people should know? We are located at the Margaret River Community Centre Wash House every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm.

We offer free hot coffee and tea, and often share a nourishing vegan curry meal together, which is provided by the Soup Kitchen onsite (meals cost $5 cash and are optional). Referrals and bookings are required and self-referrals are welcome. Referral forms can be found on the Lamp Inc website or can be emailed to you - just call 9754 1834. You can also drop in on a Wednesday during the workshop and we can help sign you up. There is a fee for NDIS participants who have access to funding in their ‘core budget’. It is free for non-government funded referrals. Donations are always welcome, and donations are a vital part of non-for-profit organisations and contribute to ongoing services.

Art goes beyond gallery walls Nature’s latest advocate

AN exhibition that began in Margaret River has made an impression on Perth audiences, with five artists from Arts Margaret River’s Gathering Ground featured in the statewide Radical Futures exhibition at John Curtin Gallery. Radical Futures brings together 49 artists selected from 13 regional exhibitions across WA, celebrating the diversity of contemporary regional arts practice. For Arts Margaret River, it is an extraordinary outcome for Gathering Ground, presented at Nala Bardip Mia – Margaret River HEART in January as part of the Regional Arts Triennial. Curated by Margaret River artist Elisa Markes-Young, the exhibition explored belonging and displacement, identity and memory, community and history. Five participating artists — Markes-Young, Ruth Halbert, Jane Tangney, Katharina Meister and Yu-Hua Lan — are now represented in Perth. Their involvement extended to the WA Regional Visual Arts Summit, where Markes-Young, Halbert, Tangney and Meister presented Artist Walk & Talk sessions, while MarkesYoung and Halbert joined the

Art as a Catalyst panel. For Markes-Young, the response has been deeply meaningful. “I’m genuinely overwhelmed by the response to our artists’ works, our artists’ generosity of spirit and the undeniable impact Gathering Ground has made far beyond Margaret River.” Arts Margaret River General Manager Michelle Wright said the response reinforced the strength of the original exhibition. “What began here in Margaret River has travelled into a major metropolitan gallery, and our artists are now contributing directly to conversations about regional

contemporary art across Western Australia.” Gathering Ground was one

of 13 exhibitions developed for the third WA Regional Arts Triennial, which collectively generated more than 160 new artworks by 137 artists. “Regional artists don’t need to wait for opportunities to come to Perth,” Arts Margaret River Marketing Manager Christopher Young said. “They are already making important work in their own communities. “What Gathering Ground has shown is what can happen when that work is given the space, support and opportunity to travel.” Radical Futures continues at John Curtin Gallery until December 6.

A background in forensic investigation and environmental law is bringing a new perspective to efforts to protect the Margaret River region’s natural environment. Nature Conservation Margaret River Region has welcomed specialist volunteer Julieta Mendenson to its advocacy team, contributing expertise spanning forensic science, investigation, law and compliance. The volunteer team monitors planning proposals, environmental issues and government policy, researching potential impacts and preparing evidence-based submissions. Originally from Argentina, Ms Mendenson is a criminalistics graduate with experience in forensic science, investigation and financial crime prevention, and is completing a Diploma in Environmental Law and Management. Her university thesis explored the use of microscopic algae as indicators of water pollution and potential evidence in environmental investigations. Now living in Margaret River, Ms Mendenson said the region had strengthened her interest in environmental protection.

Julieta Mendenson has joined the Nature Conservation volunteer crew, adding another layer of expertise to the talented team.

“Living here has made me realise even more how special these environments are and how important it is to protect them,” she said. Nature Conservation chair Ann Ward said specialist volunteers strengthened the organisation’s advocacy work. “A lot of the work happens quietly in the background – reading planning documents, understanding legislation, examining environmental impacts and working out where we can make a constructive difference,” she said. “We are incredibly fortunate to have people willing to volunteer their professional skills and experience for the benefit of our natural environment.”

Last chance to join Potato Race WHAT’S ON | THEATRE MARGARET River audiences have been laughing their way through The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race, with the community production heading into its final weekend at Nala Bardip Mia – Margaret River HEART. The show opened to an enthusiastic response, with audience members praising the cast, comedy and com-

munity spirit behind the production. One theatre-goer described the show as “hilarious”, while another urged locals not to miss the production after laughing “until my sides hurt”. “It’s local theatre and it’s brilliant theatre,” they said. The production has brought together a dedicated local cast and crew, with

countless hours spent both on stage and behind the scenes bringing the story to life. There are still tickets available for the final performances from 7pm on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3. Tickets are available at artsmargaretriver.com or from the box office at Margaret River HEART.

Attention musos: Time to apply for Sundowners SOUTH West musicians are being invited to put their hands up for a spot on stage as Arts Margaret River prepares to bring its popular Sundowner Sessions back in 2027. Expressions of Interest are now open for local musicians and bands keen to perform as part of the free summer concert series, which regularly attracts crowds of more than 500 people. Held on Sunday afternoons from 5pm to 7pm, the Sundowner Sessions offer relaxed outdoor performances designed to bring the community together for live music in some of the region’s best-loved public spaces. The 2027 program will begin on Sunday, January 17 at the Augusta Hotel, before moving to Pioneer Park in Cowaramup for concerts on January 31, February 7 and February 14. Arts Margaret River is seeking Expressions of Interest from South West musicians and bands across all genres.

Each Sundowner will feature two live acts, with all participating musicians receiving a performance fee. The sessions have become a popular fixture on the summer calendar, giving local performers the chance to play to large community audiences while offering families and music lovers a free afternoon of live entertainment. Musicians interested in taking part are asked to provide information about themselves or their band, links to music samples, their preferred performance dates and their performance fee. Expressions of Interest close on Monday, October 26, with all applicants expected to be notified by mid-November. Applications and enquiries can be sent to Steph at info@artsmargaretriver.com. THE MUCH-loved Exhibition Hall competitions will return to the 2026 Margaret River Agricultural Show, with online registrations now open ahead of the Show on 7 November. This year introduces new classes for backyard brewers and beverage makers, giving locals the opportunity to showcase their creations and receive feedback from industry experts. Amateur brewers, kombucha makers, tea blenders and tincture creators can enter their products to be judged by brewer Iliya Hastings and the team from Margaret River Brewing Co. The new drinks categories join crowd favourites including arts, crafts, baking, home gardening, produce, photography and preserves. With more than 1,500 entries received last year, the 2026 Exhibition Hall is set to be bigger than ever. Another new addition is an art category dedicated to repurposing old and broken surfboards, offering a creative outlet for boards tucked away in sheds and garages across the region.

Margaret River & Districts Agricultural Society Vice President Julie Kirby with some of the beautiful entries at last year’s Show. Image supplied.

Exhibition Hall Coordinator Janine Carter said the category reflects the region’s surfing culture while encouraging sustainability and creativity. “Surfing is such a popular pastime in our community, and this is a fantastic way to turn something that might otherwise end up as waste into a unique piece of art,” she said. “What better way to make use of a broken board than by transforming it into a work of art to display at the Show and then enjoy in your garden or games room?” Now in its fifth year of online registrations, the Exhibition Hall entry process continues to receive positive feedback for its simplicity

and convenience. Those requiring assistance can visit the Margaret River Library or contact exhibit@margaretrivershow.com. More than a competition, the Exhibition Hall celebrates local talent, skills and traditions, bringing together people of all ages and interests. The Margaret River Agricultural Show provides opportunities to learn new skills, share knowledge, encourage creativity, support local producers and inspire the next generation of farmers, makers and artists. Long friendship is built to last

MARGARET River Lions were delighted to be invited to a special sundowner at Noble Made WoodworXs in Margaret River on the evening of September 24. The invitation came from owner Peter Noble, whose connection with the Lions Club goes back to a difficult period in his life. Following a serious workplace accident some time ago, Peter spent part of his recuperation volunteering with Margaret River Lions. During that time, he made many new friends within the club and developed a lasting affection for the organisation and the work it does in the local community. Peter has remained a strong supporter of

Lions ever since. Lions members attending the sundowner were warmly welcomed by Peter, his mother Glenda and his partner Judith. Guests were treated to a tour of Peter’s workshop, along with an opportunity to admire the impressive range of craftsmanship

and displays of his work. The hospitality continued with a wonderful spread of cheeses, pâté, crackers, dips and homemade cakes, accompanied by a selection of beer and wine supplied by Margaret River Lions. With a beautiful spring evening providing the perfect backdrop, the gathering was a relaxed and enjoyable occasion, giving Lions members the opportunity to catch up with Peter, see his work and celebrate the friendship that began during his time volunteering with the club. For Margaret River Lions, it was a lovely reminder that volunteering is about more than simply giving time to the community — it can also create friendships and connec- Peter Noble (left) with MR Lions Club Member John Philips and one of Mr Noble’s handcrafted works. Groms mark milestone with epic surf NICKY LEFEBVRE SURFING THREE decades of junior surfing were celebrated in style as the Gracetown Grommets competition returned for its 30th anniversary, with sunshine, quality waves and a strong field of young surfers making for a memorable edition of the long-running event. Hosted by the Cowaramup Bay Boardriders Club, the grassroots competition has become a muchloved fixture on the WA junior surfing calendar, giving emerging surfers the chance to compete in the waves around Gracetown while celebrating the region’s strong surfing culture. Organisers described this year’s commemorative event as a huge success, with competitors, families, volunteers and supporters enjoying a day of “epic waves and high vibes”. There was plenty of talent on display across the age divisions, beginning with the 12 and Under Boys, where Kyuss Rimmer took the win, ahead of Finn Sapwell, Patrick Wray and Alby Bromfield. Luna Thomas claimed the 12 and Under Girls title, with Sienna Johnson second, Jasmine Willet third and Tyler Hetzel fourth. In the 14 and Under Boys, Jack Bowdell topped the field ahead of Oscar Blackburn, Bill Farmer and

It was a celebration for the ages - and all ages - at the 30th anniversary Gracetown Grommets event, bringing together junior athletes from the South West coast to celebrate grassroots surfing, the strength of the local community, and the commemorate the lives lost in the 1996 Gracetown cliff collapse tragedy. Nate Spooner, while Rosie Annesley took first place in the 14 and Under Girls ahead of Paige Hayward, Lily Naylor and Summer Barkhuizen.

Annesley was thrilled with the event, and her result. “Such a fun day at Gracetown Grommets,” she said. “Super stoked to win at South Point and get some

good waves with my friends.” Cruz McDonald claimed the 16 and Under Boys title, with Jahli Clarke finishing second, Charlie Harris third and Ace Flynn fourth. Poppy Redman Carr led the 16 and Under Girls field, finishing ahead of Stella Annesley, Grace Cook, Jessie Elliott and Sienna Bowdell. A number of special awards were also presented across the day. Bill Farmer collected the Best Manoeuvre award, while Jahli Clarke received the Anders Award. Farmer said he was “so stoked” to take home the award, described it as an “epic” day and praised the club for its efforts in supporting junior surfers. Tyler Hetzel was named Hellwoman and Jack Bremner took out the Hellman award, while Stella Annesley was recognised as the event’s Allrounder.

New era for local gym NICKY LEFEBVRE A MAJOR transformation of Plus Fitness Margaret River is almost complete, with new owners Nathan Parsons and Sanjai Andersen preparing to reopen the doors following a two-week renovation. The reopening follows an extensive makeover by the local pair, who took over the gym earlier this year with plans to modernise the facility while retaining the welcoming atmosphere familiar to its existing members. Mr Andersen said the pair had both trained at the gym and elsewhere around Margaret River before deciding to invest in the facility, delivering high tech, custom-made equipment. “We saw the opportunity come up, and we felt the town really needed it,” he said.

“So we just wanted to kind of invest into it and give back.” The renovation includes new flooring, changes to lighting and a substantial investment in new equipment, including Life Fitness and Hammer Strength machines. Walls have been removed to create a large, open HIIT space with synthetic turf, increasing the gym’s functional floor space and bringing a fresh, light perspective.

Mr Parsons said the aim was to create more than simply a place filled with exercise equipment, with the pair keen to develop a strong community around the gym and make quality training accessible.

Cowaramup Bay Boardriders Club thanked the competitors, volunteers and sponsors who helped make the milestone 30th anniversary event possible. Support came from Margaret River Tyrepower, GATH, Rip Curl Margaret River, Creatures of Leisure, Beach Life Margaret River, Von Boards, Sessions Surf Shop, Shane Reed, Fundd Mortgage Brokers, Margaret River Law, West Surfing, Harsun Australia, Margaret River Surfing Academy, Margaret River Mitre 10 and Anders Surf Photography. After 30 years, Gracetown Grommets remains firmly rooted in its original spirit — a community-driven event showcasing WA’s next generation of surfers and giving young competitors the chance to test themselves in one of the region’s most iconic surfing locations.

where we build a strong community base in here,” he said. That includes having trainers available to help members with correct technique and injury prevention, as well as creating an environment where newcomers feel as comfortable as experienced gym-goers. “We just want to get locals, the community, experts and trainers involved as much as we can,” Mr Parsons said. “People can come in and do their own thing, but we’re always here for assistance if they need it.” Particular thought has also gone into making the renovated space welcoming for women and people who may find traditional gym environments intimidating. New equipment includes machines focused on women’s training requirements, while softer lighting will replace what the pair jokingly described “hospital-grade” brightness. “It’s important to us that everyone feels comfortable, and

motivated, and focused on their health and training,” Mr Parsons said, pointing out new privacy decals on exterior windows to further create a sense of privacy and respect. Existing members who signed up before October 1 retain the $16.95 weekly membership rate, with new memberships from reopening priced at $21.95 per week. Members will regain access from October 1, with the October 3 launch designed as an opportunity for the wider community to see the completed transformation. Plans for the day include a public walkthrough of the newlook facility, collaboration with other businesses in the centre, and giveaways. Mr Andersen said people would be welcome to come through and explore the revamped gym even if they had no plans to train. “We’re pretty stoked,” he said. “It’s going to be unreal.”

Record field for summer season

ALLAN MILLER CRICKET A RECORD field of 21 teams will take part in the 2026-27 Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association season, starting on Saturday, October 10. For the first time there will be six separate clubs fielding three or more sides each, said BMRCA president James Gannaway. “It’s great to see Cowaramup Cricket Club back to three sides for the first time since 2018,” Gannaway said. “Vasse were tossing up whether to field two or three sides this year but they have decided to go with three again. “Vasse were considering not putting a team in B-Grade but they have decided to do it. “Any new players looking for a club to join will have plenty of choices. We are still building our numbers and there are strong signs for the future of cricket in our region. “Vasse are particularly keen to recruit new players as they currently have only 31 players on their books for three sides.” The BMRCA competition will feature six teams in A-Grade, six teams in B-Grade and nine teams in C-Grade.

The uneven number of C-Grade sides will create one bye each week, and this is the reason for the C-Grade competition starting on October 10 – one week earlier than the A-Grade and B-Grade divisions. The BMRCA committee has also voted that there will not be a mid-season T20 competition, repeating last year’s break which coincided with the Australian Country Cricket Championships in the

Busselton-Margaret River region. The major rule change in the BMRCA this year will be the introduction of a free hit for all no-balls in regular A-Grade, B-Grade and C-Grade home-and-away games, as well as finals. The rules for the power play have also changed for all grades. The umpires will need to be constantly watching how many fielders are standing outside the 30-yard circle.

The finals will be played early this summer, getting under way on March 13 with the grand finals set for March 20. The BMRCA wind-up will be held the following day, Sunday, March 21. Gannaway said the reason for the early grand final and early windup is that Easter falls the following week and the BMRCA are keen to finish the season before a compulsory Easter break. Talks between the BMRCA and the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association for a joint five-round “premier-league” competition in January between the respective A-Grade teams in both competitions have been put on hold pending further discussions. “We did not have enough time to resolve a number of unanswered questions,” Gannaway said. A novel bid by Marist Cricket Club – one of the most successful clubs in the Bunbury competition – to join the BMRCA this season has also not eventuated. “Marist were interested in playing different teams apart from the same old sides in Bunbury, but in the end it did not happen,” Gannaway said. In other pre-season news, a representative team from Busselton-Margaret River will compete in the statewide Country Cup com-

petition on October 10 and 11 in Geraldton. Country Colts, Wheatbelt and Geraldton will be the other teams competing in the Country Cup competition this year. A three-game round robin of T20 games will be played, with the final to be staged on the afternoon of Sunday, October 11. “The BMRCA owes a debt of thanks to Danny Weston and Shane Joyce for their support in travelling with the team,” said Gannaway. The inaugural BMRCA Tigers, the first ever women’s team to fully represent the BMRCA, will be playing in the Bunbury league this year. “Thanks are due to Pieter Bresser, Elle Weston, the Lepidis and many others for their hard work in getting the side off the ground,” said Gannaway. “It’s the start of something big for women’s cricket in our region.” The WA Country Masters Carnival will also be held on January 15 and 16 in Bunbury, one week before Senior Country Week. Teams of Over-40s and Over-50s from Busselton-Margaret River will take part in the carnival. “The BMRCA old boys play under the name of the Thylacines, and they are itching to get back into it,” said Gannaway.

Triple triumph for hockey club HOCKEY MARGARET River Hockey Club enjoyed a remarkable grand final weekend, claiming three premierships across two days of action. The club’s Year 9-12 girls and boys both lifted premiership cups on Friday, September 18, before the women survived a nail-biting grand final against Robins the following day. The women’s decider proved the thriller of the weekend, eventually going all the way to one-on-ones after scores were locked at 1-1. Margaret River made the early running, with a strong passage of play down the right allowing Aimee Keast to find the hotspot, where Debbie Storey finished to give her side a 1-0 half-time advantage. to level the scores. Margaret River appeared to have snatched the premiership in dramatic fashion after winning a penalty corner in the final minute and finding the net, but the goal was overturned for a foot, sending the grand final to one-on-ones. Abby Ralston earned a stroke from her attempt and calmly converted, while Josefina “Josie” Rodriguez also

found the back of the net. At the other end, Margaret River goalkeeper Emma Pointon produced a series of crucial saves as the shootout remained deadlocked at 3-3 and moved into golden-goal territory. With the premiership hanging in the balance, Rodriguez stepped up again and scored to seal a memorable victory for Margaret River.

Chelsea Pickford was named MVP of the grand final. Coach Wally Zalewski said he was incredibly proud of how the group had learned, developed and aligned throughout the season, with the grand final victory rewarding the work of the entire squad. The senior triumph followed an outstanding Friday night for Margaret River’s

Year 9-12 sides, with both defeating Countrys in their respective grand finals. The girls secured their premiership with a 2-1 victory after also claiming the minor premiership, while Immy Ensor was named grand final MVP and Busselton Hockey Association Year 9-12 girls Fairest and Best. The Margaret River boys completed their own pre-

miership campaign with a 3-2 grand final win over Countrys. They too entered the finals as minor premiers, with Jake Pawelski producing another strong performance to earn grand final MVP honours. Andy Male coached the premiership-winning boys, while Zalewski guided both the Year 9-12 girls and women to their respective titles. MORE HOCKEY | PAGE 15
