What makes 2022 so unique – so memorable?

YOU. Nearly ten months ago, Senior Services opened its doors again to the community’s seniors, elders, and adults with adaptive needs. From that first handshake at breakfast in April to that Christmas hug at the Christmas Dinner, we have been dedicated to bringing back services safely. As we enter the New Year, 2023, we anticipate having all our services back up and then some. Enhance Fitness is back, offsite activities are back, and we’ve added a new Health & Wellness program to accompany them. We’ve also added seated Sun-style Tai Chi into the mix. We believe variety and opportunity are vital to promoting senior independence and providing life-enriching activities and events.

We also had a theme of Gratitude this past year. I want to extend that sentiment into this New Year and ask that we all continue expressing Gratitude to those we love, encounter, and affect. My prayer is this: that we all express Gratitude to someone at least once a day. Tell someone thank you and share a smile with them. It’s an excellent way to begin and end the day.

Connecting Waters with Jessica Martinez

Hello all,

Welcome back to Connecting Waters, or welcome if you are new to this column. My name is Jessica Martinez, I am the Community Liaison for Senior Services. I use this column to answer some FAQ’s I receive from seniors around the community. Some range from really common questions about our services, to wacky questions like: “My dog needs a haircut, can you guys do that for me?” (Yes, I’ve really been asked that question before). I am here to answer them all!

I have recently been told I need to get medical coverage. Where do I start?

I don’t have much money to pay high insurance rates.

Don’t worry. We here at Senior Services know how scary and confusing medical insurance can be so we are here to guide you! If you are a current client of ours, simply give your assigned social worker a call and they will set up an appointment with you and a benefits specialist from our River People Health Center. Our social workers will sit in with you during the appointment to make sure that you completely understand what benefits you qualify for, and what benefits you will receive and they will make sure those benefits are at little to no cost to you. If you are not a current client, just schedule to meet with our Intake Coordinator to get signed up and we will go from there!

You can schedule at 480.362.6350 and ask for Christina Blackman.

Even if you already have insurance, it is a good idea to go over your coverage and see if anything has changed. For example, did you know that signing up for some insurance companies, such as Medicare, can disqualify you from receiving certain medical benefits? Seriously! We try to promote insurance companies that specifically care for tribal communities but the choice is up to you. We want to ensure you completely understand your medical coverage options.

Employee Spotlight Celinda Joe

My name is Celinda Joe. I’m originally from New Mexico near the Four Corners area. I was born in Shiprock and grew up on the Navajo reservation. I am from a mixed background but mostly identify with my Native culture. My mother is Navajo, Hopi and Tewa and my father is Scott-Irish and Jewish. My parents were school teachers and are both fluent Navajo speakers. My mother was not only a teacher but a potter.

She taught my two sisters and myself to make traditional Navajo pottery. I paid my way through college by making/selling pottery and receiving tribal scholarships.

I graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s and returned to New Mexico. There, I married and had three fabulous children. 10 years ago I became a single mother and entered the workforce as a social worker. I worked with Child Protective Services worker in the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Camp Verde. Later, I moved to the Valley and began working in the Gila River Indian Community as a child and family social worker. I transferred to Gila River Health Care and served five years at The Caring House, a skilled nursing facility assisting residents and

families with chronic, acute or terminal illnesses. I have a passion to work with Native seniors and was excited to learn of this position with Senior Services.

In late October, I started as the Health & Wellness Program Manager, a new program that I am excited about. I want to promote health and wellness by targeting health-related issues such as preventing COVID-19 and diabetes and making healthier choices. I have been enjoying getting to know many of you and getting ideas that will make this program the most beneficial for you.

When I am not at work or with my kids, my hobbies include hiking, swimming, gardening, exercising, cooking and interior decorating. I attempt to complete my daily Cross Fit workouts at 5:30 a.m. I have become versed in meditation and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping which is a form of body-centered therapy. I enjoy meditation, tapping and prayer after my workouts.

recreation team comes up with,” said Delphina. “I also like talking with everybody while we work on the projects. I know a lot of them, and for some, when we craft or go out, is the only time I get to see them.”

Jo, who took the reins of recreation in September of last year, is looking forward to creating more intricate crafts while keeping some of the simple ones to better serve all levels of crafters.

“I’d like to add more cultural crafts and have some guest crafters come in as well,” said Jo. “We are also looking forward to bringing back out-of-state

trips and adding more activities.”

Tony Dallas is excited about adding more trips as well. He enjoys the sports and other local outings, but has fond memories of a trip he took with Senior Services in 2018 that made a life-long wish come true.

“When I was in first grade, they showed us photos of the Space Needle being built in Seattle and I knew that I wanted to see it one day,” said Tony.

“Then many years later, I was able to take that trip. It was great to see all of the sites and to make new friends.”

Honoring Our Veterans

2022 Native American Veterans Memorial Washington D.C. In November of 2022, nineteen veterans and their guests traveled to Washington D.C. to march in a parade for the formal dedication of the Native American Veterans Memorial on Veteran’s Day. In addition, to celebrating the dedication of the memorial, they saw some amazing sights and laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Community Spotlight Vernon Soos, Sr.

Vernon grew up in a three-room adobe house at Oak and 92 street with his mom and dad and eight brothers and sisters.

When he was young, a tornado came through and took half of the main room.

He also remembers that a fire burned down their house. He then went to live with his grandma around Dobson and Indian School.

His grandma and grandpa had four horses and he liked to ride them. They

also had a little horse wagon they would use to go out, explore and pick up wood.

As Vernon grew older, he become daring.

“I used to take my grandpa’s bike which was hard because he would always lock it up, but I figured out how to get into his room and I tried all his keys until I found the right one,” recalled Vernon. “I’d ride that bike around all day but I always took it back before grandpa got home. If he caught me, it would be a spanking, but he never did catch me.”

Vernon attended day school in the community and elementary school at Carson Junior High where he enjoyed playing football and baseball.

Later, most of Vernon’s friends attended out-of-state boarding school in Nevada or California, but Vernon was to attend high school in mesa.

While in high school, Vernon’s dad had to have surgery. He remembers visiting him in the hospital with tubes everywhere.

“I watched my dad work and work all his life and I remember thinking there’s no way my dad can work now. There is no money coming in. There are no groceries. I am the oldest so I need to work and get groceries for the family,”

said Vernon.

At 15, Vernon got his first job. He drove a big tractor for farming. He loved it…being out in the open and getting dirty.

He worked 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a local farm.

“I remember I made 75 cents an hour when I first started,” said Vernon.

He drove tractors for many years and then in his early 20s, he joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He drove the big tractors grading roads in the community.

“I’d drive them on the canal all the way to Fort McDowell and go around Red Mountain and back into our community. There was a dirt road back then,” recalled Vernon.

He also operated heavy equipment dredging the canals to remove debris and silt.

It was also during this time that he attended a dance in the community building and a man he knew with the police force was providing security for the event. He encouraged Vernon to apply for the police reserves. Vernon did and soon began picking security jobs in the evenings and on weekends, in addition to his work with the bureau.

Eventually many of his friends left the force. In 1997, after 25 years of service, he also retired from the bureau.

Never idle, Vernon was again driving big equipment cutting and baling alfalfa. He was leaving work one Friday when a friend asked if he would like to keep his friend company on a drive to Mexico for the weekend. Vernon said sure.

They stayed with his friend’s sister in Mexico, Ramona. She cooked their meals and enjoyed hearing their stories through her brother. Though he didn’t say anything at the time, Vernon was quite taken with Ramona. When he

returned home, he found a way to keep the connection with her.

“I didn’t speak Spanish and she had no English, so I’d ask my friend to come over so I could call and talk to her,” remembers Vernon.

He’d call a couple of times a week when his friend was available to translate. He also wrote letters. Within six months, Ramona and her 4-year-old daughter, Laura, from a previous marriage, moved in with Vernon and his extended family.

It was a full house with Vernon’s five sons and daughters, as well as his son Junior’s girlfriend and three children.

Their five-room home is not far from where he grew up on Oak and 92nd Street.

Today, Vernon is 72 and still going strong. He is “retired retired” and enjoys going on outings with Senior Services, especially to billiards with the men’s group. He also likes to bowl and to garden. He grows watermelon, squash, tomatoes and cucumbers.

Vernon likes the serenity and open spaces of the community.

“In the city, you are too close to others. I like the free space where I can do what I want,” he said. “It’s just open.

I can see the mountains all the way around and I can breathe.”

Adult Protective Services

We are here to help

Adult Protective Services investigates reports received on abuse, neglect and or exploitation. Our client and family centered approach assists the vulnerable member and their family and helps them to reach their potential through referrals to partnering resources.

Case Management Case Management’s friendly and knowledgeable staff will help connect community seniors and adults with adaptive needs to vital services and programs. Intake Assessment Coordinators answer questions and determine eligibility a variety of services including congregate and home delivered meals, social worker and caregiver assignment, and home care assistance. Social Workers coordinate services through referrals with our partnering resources and assures the safety and wellbeing of our clients through home and facility visits.

Case Management also supports caregivers. Caregiver Coordinators help provide education, training and resources to help caregivers increase their knowledge and improve their care.

Our Support Group allows caregivers to share experiences and to develop a supportive network of those who understand what it is to provide care. Caring Counselors help caregivers deal with the stresses and difficult decisions of providing care. We also provide temporary Respite services and activities.

Food & Nutrition Food & Nutrition provides meals to community seniors ages 55+ and adults with adaptive needs. We provide nutritiously balanced meals incorporating traditional foods. Our team of cooks and cook aides are educated and have years of experience in the food industry. Many have a culinary degree. With our creativity, sense of purpose, constant pursuit of knowledge and sharing of expertise, we prepare and provide hot meals to those who are unable to 12 WINTER 2023

cook for themselves and to those who would not otherwise receive proper nutrition. We provide congregate breakfast and lunch at Salt River Senior Center and at the Lehi Community Building.

In addition, with the help of Case Management and Transportation, we prepare and provide nearly 220 home-delivered meals to homebound elders and adults with adaptive needs who are unable to come to the centers.

Home Care Assistance Home Care Assistance provides in-home service to homebound community seniors age 55 + and adults with adaptive needs. An in-home assessment determines eligibility and needed level of service. If eligible, our friendly, professional staff develop a personalized Service Plan based on the client’s needs. Our goal is to allow our clients to safely remain in their homes.

There are three levels of Home Care available: • Level I: Nutritional cooking and education. Light housekeeping associated with provided services • Level II: Assistance with bathing, dressing and walking. Nutritional cooking and education. Light housekeeping associated with provided services • Level III: Extensive assistance with showering, toileting, grooming and transferring. Nutritional cooking and education. Light housekeeping associated with provided services Transportation is provided to clients for medical, personal business appointments and grocery shopping. Requires at least 24 hours advanced notice.

Recreation Our friendly event-certified recreation team provides enriching experiences for our community’s seniors and adults with adaptive needs. Organized activities, crafts and field trips keep minds sharp. Annual themed events

such as our Valentine’s Dance, Senior Olympic Games, Grandparents Day and Christmas Dinner, provide much-needed social interaction. In addition, fully escorted out-of-state trips to add adventure, fun and social bonding.

Transportation Our friendly drivers excel at assisting our community’s seniors and adults with adaptive needs who are unable to drive or who lack transportation. Comfort and safety is our main priority. We provide transportation to and from: • • • • •

Medical appointments Errands such as shopping, banking, manicures, laundromat, etc.

Community centers for meals, events and activities Recreation activities on and off the Community Deliver meals to those who are homebound

While out and about, transportation drivers can help with pushing shopping carts, reaching items on top shelves, opening doors or pushing wheelchairs in and out of buildings.

Eat healthy We often feel less hungry as we get older, so make sure what you eat is good for you—lots of fresh fruits, veggies, protein and water.

Keep moving Staying active builds strength, stamina and improve balance which can prevent falls and other injuries.

Exercise your brain Whether trying a new hobby, learning a new language or doing Sudoku, keeping your brain active keeps you sharp.

Adapt and move on Realizing you may need a little help now that you’re getting older. It’s OK if you need hearing aids, glasses or canes to help you get around to get more out of life.

CULTURAL LIVING

Susan Ricci managed a tribal history museum in her home state of South Dakota, so it was natural for her to want to create an exhibit for the O’odham-Piipaash people when she became executive director of the Mesa Historical Museum three years ago.

“When I got here, I felt there was a huge component missing—there was nothing about our O’odham-Piipaash neighbors. I wanted to change that,” said Susan. “So many people don’t even realize that Pima and Maricopa are not the real names of the people.

I wanted to tell the story from their perspective.”

Susan did some research and was ready to reach out to the community, but the pandemic put the project on the back burner. As things began to open up again in early 2022, Susan reached out to SRPMIC Cultural Resources Director Kelly Washington.

“I was thrilled with the idea. I had a connection to the building the museum is in—I went to school at the old Lehi elementary school until second grade,” said Kelly. “I wanted to make

sure our story was told accurately.

Often the focus is on our ancestors, the Hohokam, and their supposed disappearance around 1450. Then they skip about 400 years of O’odham-Piipaash history until the arrival of American settlers. Obviously, we didn’t disappear.

We were here after 1450—we were here when the Spaniards arrived around 1700, here when the first Americans arrived in the 1800s and we are still here today. Our continuity in this place is something that needs to be recognized and often isn’t.”

Working together, the exhibit began to take shape. Susan created a dedicated space while Kelly gathered information, photos and artifacts. He also developed the narrative.

“It was truly a collaborative effort and shows how one person can make a difference,” said Kelly. “Over the years, we’ve worked with other museums sporadically. Good collaboration usually starts with one person that values our input and is willing to reach out to us.”

Susan credits Kelly.

“It was his knowledge, creativity and willingness to help. He truly did all the work and I am proud that our museum shares the origin story of our native neighbors from their perspective,” said Susan. “It is one of the things I am most proud of doing in my time here.”

The O’odham & Piipaash exhibit opened in October with an arts and craft festival featuring the works of community artisans. There were also demonstrations on traditional foods and crafts.

Susan already has plans to expand the exhibit in 2023, creating a room to show films about O’odham and Piipaash culture or created by community filmmakers. She also plans to have regular arts and crafts fairs in the spring and fall for community artists to demonstrate their skills and sell their items.

The Mesa Historical Museum is located at 2345 N. Horne Rd. in Mesa and is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm.

FOOD & NUTRITION

Yá’át’ééh (Hello) Friends, Health and wellness is important to our lives which are blessings. I encourage us all to develop a healthier lifestyle with the food intake we eat and the exercise we do. Studies show that when we exercise and eat right, we have more energy, think more clearly, deal better with stress and achieve more satisfaction in work and life.

Though Native people were once strong and physically healthy, we now face many chronic health problems. But, we can educate ourselves and live better.

With the New Year, I’d like to challenge us to live healthier by making two simple changes:

Cut the fast food

Prepare your food at home. Unprocessed foods are healthier and making it ourselves gives us control over what we and our families eat.

Add daily exercise

Designate a time daily to move for at least 15 minutes such as walking, stretching, swimming, chair volleyball, tai chi or yoga.

If you miss a day, no worries. Get back on track and keep going. I am excited to be here and to encourage you all to start and maintain a path of a healthy life. To help you get started, I am sharing two recipes you can make at home. Enjoy!

Turkey & Rice Soup Serves 6

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Simmer veggies, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper with olive oil in a covered sauce pot and over medium heat. Let them sweat for about 5-10 minutes.

2. Add chicken broth.

3. Once bubbling the soup is bubbling, add turkey and fresh parsley.

INGREDIENTS 6-7 cups of chicken broth 2 cups turkey or chicken 1 large onion, diced 2 large carrots, peeled and coined 2 large celery ribs, sliced into half-moons 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup uncooked wild or brown rice 3 thyme stems 1 bouillon cube Juice & zest of one lemon Handful of fresh parsley stems Salt & pepper to taste

4. Add rice and continue simmering about 20 minutes until rice is cooked.

5. Add bouillon cube and lemon juice and zest.

6. Pour yourself a hearty bowl and enjoy!

Chocolate Cuites Serves 4

INGREDIENTS 5 mandarin oranges, peeled and divide into segments 1/4 cup melted semisweet chocolate chips 1 tsp. coconut oil Flaky sea salt, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Stir together melted chocolate and coconut oil.

2. Dip each segment into melted chocolate and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.

3. Garnish with flaky sea salt.

4. Refrigerate until firm, 20 minutes.

5. Serve.
