Welcome back to Connecting Waters! I’ve received a lot of questions about Baby Seniors so I thought I’d take this opportunity to let you know who a Baby Senior is and what we can do for them.

For those of you who do not know, a Baby Senior is a person who has either just turned 55 years old or is about to. Many new seniors are unaware of all the services we offer here at Senior Services. For example, did you know we provide Life Alert devices or that we offer exercise programs for seniors and adults with disabilities? We even take sightseeing trips out of state! We are not always all business and no fun here. We also like to offer fun, social activities for you as well!

I just turned 55.

What services can I receive and how do I go about signing up for them?

Getting started here is really quite easy. Let me share the pathway of becoming a Baby Senior!

Simply give us a call at 480.362.6350 and we will schedule an appointment with our friendly and knowledgeable Intake and Assessment Coordinator.

During your appointment, she will go over all the services and resources Senior Services have to offer.

She will then conduct an intake assessment. Based on your assessment, a personalized case plan will be developed for you which could include services such as homecare assistance, transportation or meal delivery.

If you feel you are not in need of any of those services, no problem!

Our Intake and Assessment Coordinator will note that, but you can still be added to our email or text alerts to keep you informed of activities or events hosted by us so you can participate.

We understand becoming a senior can seem overwhelming at times. We here at Senior Services want to make that transition as easy as possible.

Additionally, often times I encounter people who tell me they do not want to reach out to us because they do not “feel old”. My answer to them is always the same: 1. Age is a blessing 2. Consider us more of a social club where you can see and interact with friends and family, and maybe get some assistance with your needs at the same time.

Employee Spotlight Raul Riena

Meet Raul Riena, transportation driver with Senior Services.

Raul grew up in Salt River with his mom and two sisters. He attended day school in the community and transferred to Carson Middle School in the 7th grade. He remembers being shock.

It was the first time he realized there were other nationalities, but he made many friends, especially by 8th grade when he became more comfortable with himself. He then attended Westwood High School in Mesa.

His favorite memories growing up were of his family get-togethers his mother and uncles would have. They would play all kinds of music and Raul loved it. He also enjoyed listening to the oldies with his mother who had an extensive collection of music from the 40s and 50s.

Later when Raul got a car, he would often drive his friends to the clubs as the designated driver. There, he was exposed to house music, which he loved, and the magic of spinning disks as a DJ. That started him on his house music collection. He worked at Fry’s on Indian School and Miller for 10+ years, moving up through various departments, and his collection grew.

Raul loved music so much that in 2011 he took music engineering classes at the Conservatory of Recording Arts in Mesa to learn recording, mixing and all the software needed to produce music.

He became a certified audio engineer and would DJ at his friend’s club in downtown Phoenix and occasionally, other venues.

In addition to working at Fry’s and 6

DJing, Raul was also a Lyft driver. He enjoyed chatting with his riders and providing them with good service. That experience would serve him well.

The pandemic brought Raul back to Salt River. He moved his small family in with his mother so they could quarantine together. Raul was looking for a job within the community when he saw a driver position for Senior Services. He joined the Transportation team in June of 2021.

“I like driving and helping the elders out here. I enjoy talking to them and listening to their stories about their lives and making them laugh,” said Raul. “I love all my coworkers. It’s such a great team. It feels like I’d been here for years, we fit so well.”

Raul delivers meals to homebound seniors and adults with physical and adaptive needs.

“It’s more than just delivery. You get to know people,” said Raul. “You make sure they are OK, visit a bit and brighten up their day.”

Raul lives with his longtime girlfriend, their 11-year-old daughter, his mother, sister, nieces and nephews. He is glad that all the kids are growing up together and he can interact with extended family every day. He enjoys photography and still DJing upon occasion.

Divison Spotlight Food & Nutrition

Senior Services Food & Nutrition grew out of the need to provide delicious and nutritious meals for seniors 55+ and adults with physical and adaptive needs.

Our team members creatively prepare hot, nutritiously balanced meals incorporating traditional foods for those who are unable to cook or who would otherwise not receive proper nutrition. Meals are available dine-in or delivered to our 220+ homebound clients in partnership with Senior Services Transportation.

“As we get older, we lose our sense of taste and our appetite, so seniors will sometimes skip meals or choose highly processed foods that have flavor, but aren’t nutritious,” said Jo Figueroa, Food & Nutrition supervisor and chef.

“We want to make sure that our seniors and vulnerable adults are getting all the food groups in their diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and vitamin C.” Meals are prepared according to USDA MyPlate guidelines and menus are approved by a certified nutritionist.

But it is about more than nutrition. Our team of cooks and cook aides are educated and have years of experience in the food industry. Many have a culinary degree. They bring that creativity to preparing meals that are nutritious and that includes new and traditional food items.

“I enjoy the expressions [our clients] make when they really like something,” said Jo. “I think about nutrition but also ask myself, Is this something they will enjoy—something that maybe they’ve not tried before?”

Jo recalls a time when an HDM driver shared how much his client enjoyed his lunch, “He never had a steak salad before and he enjoyed it so much that

he wanted to know when we could do it again.”

As much as possible, Jo and her team try to incorporate traditional foods.

“We’ve had cactus, tepary beans, squash and foods that many of our seniors ate growing up, like Spam and potatoes, homemade tortillas—foods that they find comforting,” explained Jo. “It’s a balance in providing new and innovative foods like mesquite flour cornbread and food they remember from their youth that brings comfort.”

In addition to considering the flavor and nutrition of meals, the team is always looking for opportunities to better serve our seniors and adults with physical and adaptive needs.

Breakfast To-Go was recently added as an option for working seniors. To-go breakfasts are available at the Salt River Senior and Lehi Community Centers starting at 7:45am Monday through Friday. Simply come in and sign for your meal.

In addition, Food & Nutrition recently acquired a smoker to create new options for meat and vegetables.

“We are always looking for new flavors and ways to prepare foods that add variety and interest to our menus,” said Jo. Dine-in meals are provided Monday through Friday at Salt River Senior and Lehi Community Centers. Breakfast is served 8-9am and lunch is served 11:30am-12:30pm.

“We invite all of our seniors to come in and enjoy a meal and visiting with one another in our dining rooms. We’ve missed everyone so much,” said Jo. “Bon appetit.”

Community Spotlight

Jesus Almanza

Jesus and his little brother were raised by their grandmother. They loved watching Saturday morning cartoons, cooking shows and watching Grandma make a big breakfast of bacon, eggs, pancakes and sausage.

When he was three, Jesus recalls a time when he and his brother did not want to wait until Grandma woke up to make breakfast. After watching her so many times, the boys decided they could do it themselves. Needless to say, breakfast was burnt and the house was filled with smoke.

Awoken by the noise, their grandmother entered the kitchen and informed them that since they could not be patient and they could not waste food, they had to eat the breakfast they made. It was a lesson that brings a smile to Jesus to this day.

When he was four, his mother married a good man and Jesus went to live with her and the man whom Jesus grew to consider a father.

From him, Jesus learned the value of work. He had chores in the yard and around house and when he was old enough, Jesus went with his stepfather on weekends to clean landscape trucks.

“He taught me a valuable lesson: I had to earn my money— nothing is free in life, you have to work for it,” said Jesus. “I didn’t always like him at the time, but 8

looking back on it, I realize how lucky I was to have him as a stepfather. He accepted me as his own son and he taught me about life.”

But it wasn’t all work and no play. Being from Guatemala, Jesus’ stepfather loved soccer and taught Jesus how to play. He loved it.

“It was our favorite game to play at the park—me and my dad and my mom. Later I had siblings, we’d all go to park, said Jesus.

As his grandmother aged, Jesus and his stepfather would regularly go to help with things she could no longer do. When his grandmother became ill, the family moved in to help provide care. Unfortunately, she passed away when Jesus was just 14. It hit him hard. Then another blow, his mother and stepfather divorced.

It was then that Jesus entered a dark time in his life. He turned to alcohol, was constantly running away and in trouble. This lifestyle took a toll on him and Jesus developed type 2 diabetes at age 16. His struggles continued through young adulthood and his health further declined. He started dialy-

Know Your Health

Heat Exhaustion & Stroke

We are entering the warmest time of the year in the Valley and with the rising temperatures comes an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Both are very serious.

Heat exhaustion is tied to dehydration. Hydration is not just about drinking water, but also about maintaining your body’s balance of essential electrolytes.

Warning signs of heat exhaustion • • •

What to do for heat exhaustion If you are, or you see someone, suffering from these conditions, it is important to cool down by going to a cool place, removing constrictive clothing and excess layers, icing pulse points or showering/soaking if possible, and drinking cool, sugar-free flu-

trolytes. Cooling down prevents symptoms from progressing to a heat stroke, a much more serious condition where body temperature rises to the point where organs can begin to fail. Heat stroke can lead to death or permanent disability. If symptoms do not improve within 15 minutes, seek immediate medical atten tion.

What to do for heat stroke If you are suffering from these symptoms or suspect that someone is experiencing a heat stroke, immediately call 911, move to a cooler location and try to cool the body with cold compresses or cool liquid on the skin. Do NOT give fluids.

Risk factors If you are elderly, take medications for hypertension or heart conditions, or are overweight, you are at increased risk for both heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

High humidity also increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Prevention

Avoid being outside for prolonged periods of time, especially during hot afternoon hours If you must be outside, hydrate before, during and after activity or exercise Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing Drink plenty of water or electrolyte fluids Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages which are dehydrating

“Conduct physical activities early in the day when temperatures are lower. Also, as tempting as it might be to jump into the canal to cool off, it can be very dangerous and for that reason, only swim at a designated community pool with a life guard.”

Practice gratitude

Whether you keep a journal or simply recount all the things you were grateful for during the day before bed—the warmth of the sun, a coworker who praised your work, a good hair day— Being thankful improves your physical and mental health.

Just move Your body is meant to move. Even light exercise reduces stress, builds strength, improves mood and increases stamina. Build at least 10 minutes of movement into your daily routine whether it’s a walk, simple yoga routine or dancing to your favorite tune.

Laugh Daily Studies show laughter is good medicine—it can improve your immune system and mood, reduce pain and sooth stress. Try to spend at least 15 minutes watching, reading or listening to something that makes you LOL.

Dental Services at RPHC May saw the grand opening of the River People Health Center. The new center features a variety of services for seniors including a state-of-the-art dental clinic.

Stovall Clark, practice manager for the dental clinic, is proud of the new facility and the level of service provided.

“We currently have six dentists, four hygienists, a number of assistants and a full office staff. We provide comprehensive, compassionate and culturally respectful care,” said Clark. “Our goal is to get people the treatment they need.

We work with all insurance companies and if someone is uninsured, our benefits coordinator will work to see what programs, such as AHCCCS, they may qualify for.”

The clinic is located in the Northeast corner of the second floor and features exam and treatment rooms with stateof-the-art equipment and serene views of the surrounding mountains.

Chief Dentist Leland Pond said comfort is a primary concern, especially for seniors. He encourages seniors and adults with physical and adaptive needs to come in and get comfortable with the clinic.

“We work with seniors to figure out their specific needs and to develop an individualized treatment plan that takes into account the medications they are taking, their physical condition and their level of anxiety with dental services,” said Dr. Pond.

The clinic also considers a patient’s

mobility, level of comfort and need for assistance when providing care.

Dr. Pond also stressed prevention and early treatment.

“It’s important not to wait. Some con-

ditions can become life-threatening if left untreated or require more complex procedures than if treated in the early stages,” cautioned Dr. Pond.

INSTRUCTIONS

Creamy Jalapeno Mac & Cheese Serves 8-10

Chef Jo shares these sensational summer recipes. They are perfect to make and take to your summer BBQ celebrations.

Bon appetite!

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. rotini pasta 16 oz. Velveeta, diced 4 cups cheddar, shredded 2 ½ cups half and half 1 ½ cups whole milk 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup flour 3 jalapenos, seeded, roasted, diced 1 Tbsp. onion powder 1/2 Tbsp. salt 1 tsp. Dijon or yellow mustard 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. paprika 16 FALL 2022

1. Preheat oven to 325° F and butter a 9x13” baking dish. Set aside.

2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add pasta. Cook until almost done for a firmer texture.

3. Cut jalapenos in half and deseed.

Roast in oven until soft and golden.

Cool and dice.

4. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine. The mixture will look like very wet sand. Cook for about one minute, whisking often. Slowly pour in milk and halfand-half. Whisk constantly until smooth and combined.

5. Continue whisking over medium heat until mixture is very thick.

6. Remove mixture from the heat and stir in spices, jalapeno, Velveeta, and half the cheddar. Continue stirring until the cheeses have melted.

7. In a large mixing bowl, combine drained pasta with cheese sauce.

Pour into the buttered baking dish.

8. Sprinkle the top with remaining cheese and bake for 15 minutes, until cheesy is bubbly and light golden brown.

Apple Pie Serves 6-8 INGREDIENTS Crust 2 ½ cups flour 2 sticks unsalted butter, very cold & cubed 8 Tbsp. ice water 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. Kosher salt Filling 1 lb. Granny Smith apples 1 lb. Gala apples ¾ cup brown sugar 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ lemon, juiced ½ tsp. Kosher salt ¼ tsp. nutmeg Egg wash 1 egg 1 Tbsp. water

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°F and place a baking sheet in oven.

2. In a medium bowl, combine 1 ½ cups of flour (reserve one cup), salt and sugar.

3. Add cubed butter. Using a fork, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like bread crumbs.

4. Add the remaining cup of flour and cut it in until the mixture looks crumbly and forms pea-sized pieces.

5. Add half of the ice water and mix with rubber spatula. It should start forming a dough. If not, add more water 1 tablespoon at a time until dough holds together.

6. Remove dough from bowl and form into a ball. Cut in half and press each ball into a round flat disc shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour.

7. Peel and slice apples. In a bowl, mix the apples, sugar, spices, cornstarch and lemon juice until well combined. Set aside.

8. Take one disc from the refrigerator and let it sit for five minutes. On a floured surface, roll it into a 12-inch circle.

9. Place dough in 9-inch pie dish making sure it’s even and that there is a 1 inch edge all around.

10. Take out second ball of dough and let it set five minutes. Roll it into a 12-inch circle.

11. Evenly spread the apple mixture in the pie dish, spreading it evenly.

Cover apples with the second crust.

12. Trim excess dough and pinch edges together or use fork to seal.

13. Refrigerate pie for 20 minutes before cooking.

14. Create the egg wash by beating egg and water. Evenly brush mixture on pie crust.

15. Cut four slits in the top.

16. Place pie dish onto hot baking sheet in the oven. Set timer for 20 minutes. Once timer goes off cover pie with foil and cook for another 40 minutes.

“Don’t be hesitant even if you’re unsure if it’s a service we provide,” said Rito. “We will work with you and complete a needs assessment and create a plan to meet those needs,” said Rito.

Esther echoes his advice.

“Just call them. They are great and so willing to help. Don’t get discouraged because even when it might take them a bit to get to your project because they are busy helping other seniors, they will come as soon as they can and what they do makes such a difference,” said Esther.

In addition to accessibility services, SHRRP provides a variety of other services to qualified community residents.

SHRRP also provides day-to-day services that seniors and those with adaptive and medical needs may find challenging such as changing air filters, repairing exterior doors that do not close correctly or improperly sealed windows.

Qualified individuals must be members of the community, age 55+ or qualify with medical disability, and have a home condition that detrimentally affects the individual’s health, welfare or safety.
