A Letter from Brian Windrope, Executive Director 2022 was, above all else, a year of transition for Senior Services and our community. Yet those transitions weren’t always clearly delineated. We were done with COVID. We were not done with COVID! People had returned to doing things. People had not returned to doing things! Programs were back. Programs were still returning! Yes, it was a Dickens-like year in the way we eagerly sought the “new” normal and yet were still wrestling with the impacts of that darn virus. At the start of 2022, we were still looking over our shoulders, feeling tentative, hoping the worst was past. By year’s end, we had found our stride and were eagerly planning for 2023. In my memory, 2022 will forever be the final year of transition out of that pandemic. I hope to not see another one too soon. During this year, we resumed operations in more or less similar ways to what we had been doing pre-pandemic, with exceptions being programs we’d begun and others we’d stopped. Our newly resumed Home Share program really took off in 2022, blossoming into a wonderful housing solution for those it serves. The Senior Nutrition Program adjusted to the return of community dining five days per week in our centers. Classes and Trips ended the year with good momentum that has continued into 2023.

2022 was a year when we took stock of how we had handled the pandemic. This self-reflection left us feeling very positive about the role and importance of Senior Services, during good times and bad. We were a vital lifeline for thousands of seniors, providing healthy meals, companionship and connection. We were tested, and felt we passed the test. The staff and volunteers of 2022 were absolutely fantastic in how they pulled themselves up from the wreckage of COVID and charged forward with enthusiasm. We had a newfound strength, born from struggle, and shaped by appreciation for all the little and large things we had lost and were regaining. Through all of the transitions of 2022, we relied upon, and remain incredibly grateful for, the financial support you gave us. Your belief in the importance of our mission lifted us up, the proverbial wind beneath our wings. As you look through this report of everything we accomplished in 2022, I hope you are as proud as we are. We could not have done it without you!

“I get a lot of gratification out of this,” said Cat, who volunteers at the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center. “The most important part is helping others.” It’s a sentiment we hear a lot from folks who donate their time. The lifeblood of our organization at over 200 strong, our volunteers work tirelessly to keep our center doors open and promote services to seniors. Volunteers who have spent time with us say that the work is rewarding, it creates closer ties to the community and fosters great friendships along the way. “It’s nice to help people out. Everybody that comes in is a friend,” Bob, another Lacey Center volunteer said.

Olympia Senior Center volunteer Hyacinth commented that she just wanted “to be and to belong, and I get to do that here.” Volunteers are integral to our organization, and our mission to improve the quality of life for people as they age. Each day hundreds of seniors in our community are served a nutritious meal through either our Community Dining or Meals on Wheels programs. “For some of us, this saves us,” said J.M., a Meals on Wheels recipient.” We don’t have to shop, we don’t have Instacart. You’re dependable, you deliver and make sure we’ve got one meal for every day,”

Not only does the Senior Nutrition Program see to dietary needs, but the program also comes with a side of human interaction that is invaluable. Whether it’s meeting friends over lunch at the Olympia or Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center, or looking forward to chatting with a Meals on Wheels volunteer once a week, SNP isn’t just about food, it’s about togetherness. As Martha told us, “When the volunteers come once a week, you start looking forward to it, because I live alone, like so many elderly people.” Want to learn more about our Senior Nutrition Program? PALS FUND

Many low-income seniors cannot afford to pay for routine veterinary care, much less a pet emergency and often put the needs of their pets ahead of their own, risking their own health and wellbeing. That’s where the PALS Fund comes in. Supported completely by donations, the PALS Fund—Pet Assistance for Low-Income Seniors—helps cover the cost of veterinary bills. From routine preventative care to emergency procedures, the fund provides much-needed support for seniors who simply cannot afford the rising cost of vet care.

“The PALS program made it possible for me to have Katherine,” Deborah said, lovingly holding her cat when she spoke to us. Owning a pet has been proven to improve the lives of seniors, one of the pillars of our mission. It is said that not only do pets relieve feelings of loneliness and isolation in their owners, but help with mindfulness and even speed up recovery. “She’s honestly my best friend,” Deborah said. “She makes my life so much better.” Want to learn how to donate, or qualify for pet assistance? TRANSPORTATION

Seniors aged 60 and older have the opportunity to utilize our Transportation Program, which connects those with no means of transportation with rides to essential errands such as medical appointments or trips to the grocery store. “Our clients truly have no means of transportation available to them,” said Transportation Manager Shel Barber, explained that the program is available to seniors living in Thurston or Mason counties who are not served by Dial-a-Lift, Intercity Transit or Mason Transit. “Volunteers are truly what make the program,” Shel said.

In 2022 our volunteers racked up a whopping 5,249 hours of driving for 2,848 total one-way trips, 93% of those being for medical appointments. “Without the Transportation Program, you would have people not getting the medical care they needed,” Shel said. “If someone needed to go to Tacoma or Seattle, that trip could cost hundreds of dollars.
