CSRA Area Agency on Aging’s

Centenarian Club The CSRA Area Agency on Aging would like to honor centenarians in the CSRA and capture their stories to bring attention to their amazing lives! CSRA residents who are 100 or older are invited to join the Centenarian Club and attend an annual special ceremony held in their honor. The Centenarian Day reception is held annually at the Area Agency on Aging Annual Awards and Recognition Program during Older Americans Month in May. We understand that not every centenarian wants to participate in a community event, but we want to capture their stories and acknowledge how they’ve touched our community. If you or someone you know would like more information on the Centenarian Club, please contact Joyce Tutt-Cherry at (706) 210-2079 or jcherry@csrarc.ga.gov. The agency provides case management services and coordinates on-going support to centenarians and their families.

For over 40 years, Trinity Home Health and Hospice Services has served the CSRA with compassionate, quality home health and hospice services. Our team has over 250 years of collective experience. Call us first for your home care needs!

What is Home Health? Home Health provides clinical support to patients by providing services to help them regain their independence through medical care in their familiar home environment. Think of home health care as an extension of the care you receive from your doctor’s office or hospital, provided at home. From medication management to treatments to therapy that helps you gain your strength back, we have the skilled clinical services your doctor says you need to get better – all in your living room. What services does Home Health provide? • Skilled Nursing • Physical Therapy • Occupational Therapy • Speech Therapy • Home Health Aides • Medical Social Worker Services • Nurse On-Call 24/7

What is Hospice? Hospice provides supportive care to terminally ill patients who usually have a life expectancy of six months or less. Hospice promotes palliative care, which means that efforts will be made to keep patients as comfortable as possible with primary emphasis on preventing, reducing and controlling pain. Hospice can also prevent unnecessary hospitalizations. While family members or other caregivers attend to the patient on a daily basis, members of the Hospice team make regular home visits to offer medical, emotional and spiritual support. What services does Hospice provide? • Skilled Nursing • Medical Social Worker Services • Bereavement Counseling • Respite Care • Medical Supplies • Palliative Medication • Inpatient Care • Chaplain • Home Health Aides • Nurse On-Call 24/7 How do we get started? The patient or family member can start the conversation with their physician. It is always a good idea to bring up the subject before you really feel it is needed. This allows time to get all questions answered and still have time to make a decision.

Planning for the Second Half of Life: Asset Protection Focused Estate Planning As with anything in life, your estate planning needs to change as your life changes. In retirement, the greatest risk to you & your assets is the potential for long term care crisis – and the attendant costs for that care – to decimate your estate. Statistics show that between 50-70% of all people over age 65 in the U.S. will need long term care at some point in the future, with the average length of stay between 3.5 to 4 years. Does your financial plan account for $6,500-$7,500 per month in extra expenditures for a long term care event? Over four years, that could equate to over $360,000 at today’s cost – and the cost always, always goes up each year. Most are unprepared for this very likely event and. In fact, most people have never given a thought to planning for long term care. This is where a Board Certified Elder Law Attorney, or CELA for short, can help. There are only nine CELAs in the state of Georgia. Without planning for long term care, a family could lose everything they have saved to a spend-down, and also their home to the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program. Most of the clients of The Smith Law Firm are not concerned about protecting against estate taxes because they do not have over $11.2 million in assets (the new Federal Estate Tax limit for 2018). Instead they want to avoid probate & make their passing as simple as possible for the family, protect against long-term care a provide a legacy to their children. One of the best tools a Certified Elder Law Attorney has in his/her tool box to assist with these goals is the modern asset protection trust. We never recommend just giving your assets away to children or others for numerous reasons, not the least of which is that you lose control. Incorporating long term care planning and an Asset Protection trust into your estate planning makes sense for many families for a variety of reasons. Typically clients like the flexibility, asset protection, and simplicity provided by the Asset Protection Trust. With this type of trust, you can: • Stay In Control • Avoid Probate • Provide Asset Protection for Your Children • Provide Asset Protection for You • Protect Against Long-term Care Costs • Protect Against Lawsuits • Avoid Trustee Problems • Leave a Legacy for the Next Generation

The utilization of these types of trusts is critical to anyone looking to plan ahead to protect their estate from long term care costs, while also remaining in control of the assets in their estate.

Elder Law . Estate Planning . Asset Protection . Special Needs Planning

What about the standard old revocable living trust used in estate planning? The biggest difference between the traditional Revocable Living Trust (RLT) and the irrevocable Asset Protection Trust is that the latter can protect your assets from creditors and nursing homes. The Asset Protection Trust is a modern form of irrevocable trust that allows you to change beneficiaries, change trustees (and be the trustee yourself ) and get assets back into your name at any time following certain rules we set up. And these types of trusts do not require a separate tax return or tax ID number, making them very easy to manage: as easily as you manage your assets without one. Perhaps the strongest reason to create an Asset Protection Trust is its great flexibility to meet a wide range of needs. With a this Trust you can maintain control of your assets (unlike outright transfers of assets to a child or to a traditional Irrevocable Trust), while at the same time protecting your assets from probate (unlike wills) and from creditors and nursing homes (unlike Revocable Living Trusts). A Certified Elder Law Attorney has the expertise to properly guide you towards the type of estate planning might be right for you in retirement, based on your needs and concerns.

4 Simple Steps to Lower Your Taxes Tax planning allows you to take advantage of opportunities throughout the year that could save you money now, next tax season, and in retirement. Tax preparation is historical by nature, preparers look at your past year and determine whether you will get money back, owe the government, or hopefully break even. New “simplified” tax rules don’t discount the importance of tax planning, if anything they create new opportunities. Here are some tips on how you can save money now and later: WITHHOLD THE CORRECT AMOUNT FROM YOUR PAYCHECK Getting a big return during tax season can be fun, but what it really means is that you gave the government an interest-free loan. I understand some people use this as a forced savings account, but the actual interest you can earn in a savings account on that extra income is more than you will get from the government (and in this interest rate market that is saying something). PUTTING MONEY AWAY IN A QUALIFIED RETIREMENT PLAN This has two benefits; first, it improves your chances of being able to retire comfortably, and second, whatever you put into a qualified retirement plan reduces your tax liability. You can contribute up to $18,500 per year into a qualified employer plan and an additional $6,000 if you are over age 50!1 BRACKET BUMPING Knowing where you fall within your tax bracket is critical and presents a plethora of tax planning solutions that can potentially save you money come next tax season or allow you to convert fully taxable investments into tax-free or tax-advantaged investments. If we expect taxes to be higher in your retirement and can convert taxable assets to tax-free assets at a lower rate today, why wouldn’t you? CONTROL INVESTMENT INCOME Make sure your financial advisor and tax planner are on the same page when it comes to tax planning. Dividends and capital gains that you are not actually pocketing can cost you money in taxes at the end of the year. Tax-loss harvesting and asset location can help solve this problem, but it takes a coordinated effort. Do you think taxes will go up or down in the next 20 years? What about 50? I can tell you as of right now they will go up in 102 This presents you with a unique opportunity to potentially decrease your tax burden next year and beyond.
