Hospice, Quick and To-The-Point Hospice care is a special kind of care that focuses on the quality of life for people and their caregivers who are experiencing an advanced, life-limiting illness. Hospice care provides compassionate care for people in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible. The hospice philosophy accepts death as the final stage of life: it affirms life, but does not try to hasten or postpone death. Hospice care treats the person and symptoms of

Medicare 2021 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans) Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.” Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Three hours of therapy a day, five days a week A rehabilitation hospital requires that patients receive at least three hours of therapy five days a week. Patients have their personalized therapies spread out throughout the day to improve appropriate skills including walking, swallowing, eating, cooking, grooming and dressing. The Caregiver Support Program that is designed to support individuals caring for loved ones. A partnership between SMPDD and Trualta™ delivers a program that addresses caregiver educational and psychosocial needs

P rovides personalized online information. P rovides articles, videos, and printable tip sheets to caregivers who want information on how to best care for their loved ones. C aregivers can learn what is most important to them: brain health, personal care, safety, and their own wellness.

C ontact our Caregiver Support Coordinator, Susan Bone, PhD, who has been trained by Trualta to facilitate the program. Susan will assess the caregiving environment and share information about the program. The family’s information will be kept confidential. O nce a caregiver is registered, they will have unlimited digital or hard copy access to articles and tips about caring for their loved one.
T he Mississippi Department of Health and Human Services, Family Caregiver Program, Title III funds this program, so there is no fee to participants.

P articipants can access the program using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. P articipants can select modules/ lessons that are most relevant to them and have no limit on how many lessons they access. L essons range from 5 minutes to 2 hours, allowing for participants to easily fit the caregiver training in when it is convenient. T he Caregiver Support Coordinator, Susan Bone, will maintain contact with participants to guide them or answer any questions. ~

Home Health Care Definitions HOME HEALTH AGENCIES – Refers to someone State licensed health care providers that offer both medical and non-medical assistance in the comfort of your home. Services include skilled nursing, occupational, physical and speech therapies, assistance with activities of daily living, homemaker services and transportation services, both local and long distance. PERSONAL CARE SERVICES – Services provided by a companion/sitter to be with your family member for a specified amount of time each day up to and including 24-hour supervision. The companions may provide assistance with routine activities such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, errands etc. Many agencies provide transportation to doctor visits, shopping etc, as well as recreational activities. They may not dispense medications. HOSPICE – a comprehensive program of comforting care to patients and families facing a life threatening illness. Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment. Professional medical care is given, and sophisticated symptom relief provided. INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV THERAPY) – any medical treatments/medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins including antibiotic and
hydration therapy, pain management, chemotherapy, and central line care. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a M.D. RESPITE CARE – care that is shortterm or temporary. It is designed to give families a break from the stress of daily caregiving. Respite care can be for a few hours, overnight, or for days. The amount of care changes with the needs of the family and the patient. SKILLED NURSING – a higher level of care where services are performed by a licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Skilled Nursing includes, but is not limited to patient assessments, performance of prescribed medical treatments, administration of prescribed medications, education for the patient and the caregiver related to the disease process, treatment, health measures and medication management.

Senior Housing Definitions ASSISTED LIVING – Communities are typically apartment-style with kitchenettes and private baths. Also included in this category are residential area homes with an average of 5-8 residents. Some offer companion accommodations. Amenities vary. Services include meal plans, cable television, local phone, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and transportation. Also provided is personal assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, eating and ambulation. Rates vary from an all-inclusive to base rates with levels of care. CCRC / LIFE CARE – Continuing Care Retirement Community otherwise known as Life Care, offers a campus-style environment that may include villas, apartments/condos, assisted living and skilled nursing services. An endowment fee may be required that entitles residents to use assisted or skilled services when needed throughout their lifetime. DAY CARE – Any provider can elect to provide day/night services on a short or long term basis. Rates typically include a place to rest, one or two meals and snacks and activities for the day. Licensed ALFs are prohibited by law to promote these services without a license.

MEMORY CARE – These communities are either licensed assisted living facilities that specialize in delivering care to residents with dementia or a unit of a skilled nursing facility. Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Staff is usually specially trained. Amenities vary. Services include meal plans, cable television, local phone calls, housekeeping, laundry maintenance and transportation. Personal assistance with ADLs available. Rates also vary from all-inclusive to base rates with levels of care. Payor sources usually accepted are private pay or some insurance plans. Advantages of Assisted Living Many of us would refuse an opportunity to move into an assisted living community. We’re proud, independent, and we’re “comfortable” in our homes. The thought of change at this stage of our lives is usually answered with an emphatic “NO.” However, let’s look at this opportunity in a qualitative manner, that is, lets put it on a scale, weigh it, and see if it is, indeed, a good value and a smart move for us. Most if not all of us are on a fixed income. There’s a limit to our ability to pay for our needs. We are aware that the old standard of “the cost of a loaf of bread” is tangible proof of rising costs – and they always rise, not fall. It costs more and more to live independently in our own homes, even though they may be paid for. Here are a few costly items that we must have if we stay in our homes: n Repairs to the structure (siding, roof, windows, etc.) n Lawn and landscape maintenance (we can’t do this ourselves) n Utilities (electricity, water, gas, garbage) n Property tax (county and city) n Repairs to appliances (air conditioning and heat, refrigerator, washing machine and dryer, stove, plumbing) n Insurance on your house Now, let’s consider other tangible and intangible costs of staying in our homes: n Groceries (we all know how these costs have risen)

Cooking and cleaning after meals Dusting, sweeping, and keeping everything clean n Worrying, perhaps, about future problems around the house (air conditioning breaking or wearing-out, plumbing malfunction, electrical problems after many years of use, etc.) n Having to drive so much (to the grocery, bank, pharmacy) n Having to rely on others, family or friends, to do things for you n n
These are a few serious considerations that affect us. Perhaps “worrying” about the future and our ability, financially and mentally, to meet those problems is most concerning. Also, just facing the reality of aging and our lesser abilities can burden us. If we total the dollar costs of keeping the house, and the mental cost of worrying about this, the actual cost of assisted living is not so high. Assisted Living eliminates your “costs” listed above. You do not have to maintain the house, pay for groceries, prepare meals, clean-up, pay property taxes and home insurance. You will have a Registered Nurse available to you, and trained attendants to help you with your activities of daily living. You’ll have peer friends who are there for the same reasons.
