Innovage Pace Helps Marvin On his morning InnovAge PACE Keep on Truckin’ bus ride, 89-year-old Marvin looks forward to his day at the Pueblo PACE center.

He enjoys reading, doing crossword puzzles, and most of all, reminiscing about his time in the U.S. Air Force and career as a truck driver for 42 years. PACE is a great fit for Marvin, who is determined to maintain his mobility. After years as a truck driver, Marvin can tell you how to get anywhere in the U.S. and has likely been on every major interstate in the country. He has spent much of his life traveling, and he doesn’t plan to let his age slow him down.

Marvin comes to InnovAge as a participant in the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), an alternative to nursing facilities that provides customized healthcare and social engagement to older adults to help them stay independent.

Marvin’s team of InnovAge PACE doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, dentists, physical therapists, nutritionists, home health aides, and social workers provide him with medical care and social support at the Pueblo PACE center. They work together to address all of his healthcare needs. With this support, Marvin is 2 SOUTHERN COLORADO – SPRING 2018-2019

able to live safely in his home.

Recently Marvin fell a few times and his treatment required surgery and rehabilitation. His mobility wasn’t as good as it was, and he worried about falling again. Marvin spends five days a week at InnovAge. He attends restorative physical therapy at the PACE center to maintain his functional mobility and decrease his risk for falls.

The InnovAge Pueblo PACE center is located in the historic Bessemer neighborhood. The building was originally the Minnequa Bank of Pueblo. InnovAge retained historic aspects of the building, including rich woodwork and vaulted ceilings.

The original bank vault, which can be seen in the cover photo, is used for storage and is located in the physical therapy gym.

The mission of InnovAge is to sustain and enhance the independence and quality of life for those it serves.

Centura Center for Rehab

REHAbiLiTATiON HOSPiTALS Rehabilitation Hospitals, sometimes referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury or other medical conditions. They can be found within a hospital or in a free-standing building. Rehabilitation hospitals were created to provide services less costly on a per diem basis than general hospitals but provide a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. Rehabilitation Hospitals must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day.

The Changing Face of Aging in The aging landscape is changSouthern Colorado ing at a rapid rate with the baby boomer population nearly fully aged into senior status.

Colorado is now a state on the forefront of innovating services and options for retirement and Pueblo Area Agency on Aging is working with the State Unit on Aging and the Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging to address concerns and innovative approaches for Southern Colorado. Along with 16 other Area Agencies on Aging; Pueblo is positioned to ensure the aging agenda is kept at the forefront of conversations in the community. There is now a statewide initiative to increase aging funding to meet the demand of an almost 70% increase of population over 60 by the year 2030.

Yes, that’s right, the Baby Boomers have arrived. There has never been a time in our recent history when this dynamic has made such a great impact on culture and society. If you’ve heard, “I’m not my Grandmother” or “Life really begins at 60”, you’re most likely talking to a Boomer. We cannot look at services or community development the same in the coming years. Over 60 means, lifestyle, travel, aging in place, innovating intergenerational services.

Aging means creating community and developing connections to ensure aging is enjoyable and safe.

The Area Agency on Aging is working with community partners and agencies to develop dialogue and assessments to address Southern

Colorado’s capacity to care for our aging population as well as identify opportunities to enhance the great services and housing options we already enjoy. They are also developing initiatives to increase awareness about elder abuse, emergency planning, community dialogue, intergenerational outreach, and much more to support the many other aspect of community life here in Southern Colorado. The Senior Resource Development Agency and Colorado Legal Services have also teamed up to identify ways to address need and look to future for innovative approaches, ensuring the needs of this new aging population are addressed.

Why is a Durable Power Sometimes I am asked what of Attorney planning documents are most Necessary? important, and people are often surprised when I first mention the need for powers of attorney.

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that appoints a person to act as your “agent” in your absence or when you are unable to act for yourself. Depending upon how the document is drafted your agent can be authorized to make financial and health care decisions for you.

Married couples frequently believe their spouse will be able to handle everything on their behalf should a need arise. This is simply not the case. For example, if a married couple owns property together, and one of them is mentally or physically incapacitated, without a proper POA the other spouse would need to be appointed as a guardian for the incapacitated spouse in order to sell the property. This would likewise apply to investment and retirement accounts and other types of property.

Another area where a lack of a Power of Attorney can create problems is in healthcare decision making. Do not make the mistake of believing you have the right to make health decisions for your parent or spouse if they are unable to do so. A

Durable Power of Attorney should be in place to deal with these situations or you could end up in court seeking a guardianship order so you can take care of a loved one.

Court proceedings can be quite costly in that they involve court filing fees, attorney fees, physician’s fees, and other costs. These can be avoided with some simple planning. When my wife’s mother suffered a stroke we were able to administer her affairs because we had planned in advance. We never had to go to court, and my wife took care of all her mother’s financial and medical needs without ever having to obtain court permission.

Moreover, do not be fooled by a “one size fits all” power of attorney.

POAs need to be drafted with your specific needs in mind, so do not trust your needs to something that can be pulled off the web. Overcoming Your PROBATE – AHH!!! Just the Fear of Probate mention of the word sends chills down many American’s backs. But is it really that bad?

We in Colorado are fortunate that our laws allow us to choose how to proceed into probate (which is the process of winding up the affairs of a decedent by paying creditors and distributing assets and property).

The two choices are informal probate or formal probate.

Informal probate means that the estate is not court-supervised. Administration of the estate begins by filing a number of probate forms with the District Court, having the Court admit the estate into probate and appointing a personal representative (formally known as an “executor” or “executrix”) to begin the process of paying bills, taxes, selling property and/or distributing the decedent’s assets pursuant to the decedent’s Will or by the intestacy statutes if the person died without a Will. An informal probate can be wrapped up after six months, but most estate matters take up to a year or more.

Formal probate, sometimes referred to as supervised administration, occurs rarely, but is sometimes necessary when a dispute exists between those people interested in the decedent’s estate. In this case, the Court conducts hearings periodically regarding the distribution of the estate and other matters that arise during the administration process. A formal probate can last years and is often very costly.

The good news is that 90% of all estates in Colorado are not supervised, thus there are less costs and attorney fees associated with an informal probate. Because Colorado has adopted what is known as the Uniform Probate Code, probate matters have been greatly simplified, thus, reducing the fear of probate that many of us exhibit today.

So, does every estate need to go through the probate process? Not necessarily. For example, if an individual passes away with personal property and bank account assets (not real property) that are valued less than $66,000.00 a small estate affidavit can be used to transfer the property. Also, some property may just pass to another by operation of law, i.e. joint tenancy with right of survivorship, beneficiary designations on life insurance policies and IRAs, payable on death accounts (PODs), transferable on death accounts (TODs), and trusts. However, beware of transferring property or setting up a trust just to avoid probate. There could be significant tax implications and other unnecessary costs by transferring property without the advice of an attorney or accountant.

Remember, probate should not be feared. Consult with your attorney on how probate can affect your estate. ~

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Most people think of Noise-Induced Is Serious Hearing Loss (NIHL) occurring only when their job or environment is filled with constant noise.

They think that you will only get this type of hearing loss if you work in noisy jobs like construction, mining, or some kind of industrial setting. While this is definitely true, you can have NIHL from even the slightest noisy environments.

In my experience, I have encountered a variety of people who have this type of hearing loss, that come from many different worlds.

From people who work in offices, to parents that stay at home with their somewhat noisy children! Also NIHL can occur and show symptoms, at ANY age. The important thing to understand, is that we start to lose our hearing at birth, and NIHL is accumulative over your whole life.

So a job at a construction site in your teens to a loud concert or two (or more), to occasional weekend shooting practices, all add up and are very permanent.

The other thing about NIHL, is that damage can occur, depending on the noise level, in LESS THAN 8 SECONDS! Yes, 8 seconds of loud noise can start to permanently damage your hearing.

The tricky thing is that the damage from noise usually occurs in our higher frequencies (pitches) first, where our speech clarity happens, and not in the lower frequencies where most of our perception of

volume is at. So, what that means, is that most people erroneously think that because they can hear a pin drop, that their hearing is fine.

When we start to lose our higher pitches (clarity), the issues we have include, knowing people are talking to us but not understanding everything they said, and also having difficulty understanding people speaking when in noisy environments like restaurants. This is NOT normal. This indicates that there is some high frequency hearing loss occurring, that is not allowing you to discern softer speech. This is most often presented simultaneously with tinnitus or ringing in your ears as well.

As they age, they realize that if either one of them needs Long Term Care, that their property and other assets could be at risk.

They need accurate information they can trust so that if Long Term Care needs come on suddenly, or if Long Term Care is some years away, they are prepared and are doing all they can to ensure that their future generations can enjoy this farm and other things they have worked hard for.

It is estimated that over 70% of people over 65 will need some type of Long Term Care(LTC) according to the US Department of Health & Human Services. Colorado has many resources for financial help like Health First Colorado, Colorado’s Medicaid Program. Medicaid will help with in home care, assisted living and nursing facility care.

Most Colorado elderly who need help paying for LTC feel that they will not qualify for Medicaid because they have too much income or too many assets. In reality, many could qualify if they had the information from a knowledgeable professional, holding a Certified Medicaid Planner (CMP)

designation. The role of a CMP is to assist an applicant file a complete and correct Medicaid application and work with the Department of Human Services to gain approval for LTC Medicaid.

The rules around Medicaid eligibility are readily available online. Incomplete or inaccurate advice often causes people to think that spend down is the only way to qualify for LTC Medicaid. This simply is not true and can lead to an unnecessary spend down and/or liquidation of the limited assets people have worked a lifetime to obtain.

There are legitimate means of preserving valuable or sentimental assets and income. Here in Colorado, to the surprise of many, the Medicaid guidelines afford numerous opportunities to protect income and assets. Consulting with a CMP who specializes in LTC can help you and your family to file a successful application and qualify for Long Term Care Medicaid. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was written

T

he year was 1976. The emergency room was the only primary-care option available to many residents, especially those who lacked health insurance. In an attempt to remedy this and provide quality, comprehensive health care to all residents served, a citizens group founded Valley-Wide Health Systems.

A lot has changed since 1976, and the healthcare industry has been far from immune to these changes. The advent of technology continues to influence the way organizations care for patients. Patient records are now stored electronically. Physicians are sometimes seen on a screen. Yet sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Primary Care We aim to keep our communities healthy and provide family Services medicine services at clinics across the San Luis Valley, Arkansas Valley, and Cañon City. These clinics provide services for all, treating both acute and chronic conditions.

Dental Spread across eight clinics in Southern Colorado, Valley-Wide Services offers excellent dental services for the entire family. Our dentists

and dental hygienists provide preventative education to adults and children both in our clinics and through outreach in our communities. We also provide basic dental services such as exams, x-rays, and cleanings, in addition to more extensive services when necessary. Staying true to the organization’s mission, our teams work with patients to ensure they have the guidance necessary to prevent dental problems in the future.

Behavioral Recognizing the tremendous benefit that Behavioral Health Health services can have on an individual living a healthy lifestyle and Services staying true to the mission of being an integrated health care

organization, Valley-Wide has implemented Behavioral Health services into the organization’s service line offerings. As this initiative continues to develop, Valley-Wide will integrate Behavior Health services into the patient care model, providing a comprehensive and team-oriented approach to health care.

SRDA – Joseph H. Edwards The Senior Resource Development Active Adult Agency, Inc. (SRDA) in Pueblo, Center Expands raised money to enclose the 2nd floor balcony area at the Joseph H. Edwards Active Adult Center. This capital project will enable SRDA to increase its programming by providing a safe, comfortable, and quiet environment in which to participate.

To meet the needs of the aging population of Pueblo County and provide multi-use space for the larger community, SRDA is expanding usable space by enclosing a 1,100 square foot patio on the 2nd floor of the Joseph H. Edwards Active Adult Center. The Active Adult Center located in downtown Pueblo at 230 North Union Avenue, near the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project, City Hall, Historic Union Avenue District, and senior apartment complexes, houses the SRDA offices and its many comprehensive programs.

The newly enclosed space will provide our community and regular visitors — of all ages — with state of the art multi-purpose room(s) at no charge to non-profits and room rental for private sector meetings.

The space has been designed to be used as one large room with complete audio/visual support to facilitate community-based meetings, trainings, physical, social and educational activities. Weidner Associates designed the project and

Acorn Construction was awarded the contract to build it. The projected completion of the enclosure is Spring of 2018.

“The overall goal of this capital expansion campaign is to create a functional space, enabling SRDA staff and community partners to deliver top-notch programming and services for the individuals of Pueblo County,” said SRDA Pueblo Executive Director, Steve Nawrocki.

“The Board of Directors and leadership team at SRDA are excited to offer this space to the seniors of Pueblo and our community-at-large.”

The Daniels Fund, based in Denver, CO, generously contributed $60,000 to the project. Other significant funders include the Boettcher Foundation, El Pomar Foundation, Frank I. Lamb Foundation, E.M. Christmas Foundation, Bob and Doris Johnston Foundation, R.M. Does your agency utilize an Questions to Ask existing VA benefit called ‘Aid & Any Non-Medical Attendance’? Some agencies offer help to Veterans but it’s mostly Home Care Agency just gathering paperwork necessary for the A&A... and that’s it!

Care typically doesn’t start until the VA pays the agency, which can take months with those agencies unfamiliar with the process. If you call an agency and they don’t know anything about the A&A benefit OR they do offer it and/or it takes longer than 2-4 weeks to START care… move on! Instead, try and find an agency that understands the complexity of the A&A, can start care within 2-4 weeks and has no hidden costs to get started.

Do you have experienced VA Accredited Agents within your office to help with this process? Some agencies will outsource this critical step to local Attorneys or Financial Planners that may have accreditation, but the A&A benefit is just one of many products they offer.

Find an agency that has VA Accredited Agents on their team that are dedicated and focused only on

24 HOUR CARE – Refers to ‘around the clock treatment’ in a home environment. The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver.

ALZHEIMER’S/DEMENTIA CARE – Non-skilled care provided for clients with memory issues includes but not limited to establishing a routine, reminders for activities for daily living, rerouting if necessary and assistance with sleep issues or ‘sun downing’. By using creativity and caregiving skills, you can adapt routines and activities as needs change.

BONDED – Being bonded means that a bonding company has secured money that is available to the consumer in the event they file a claim against the company.

HOMEMAKER/COMPANION – Non-medical assistance with meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, errands, activities, outings, companion-ship and other household duties. These agencies are licensed by the state.

INSURED – This refers to what happens if someone gets hurt on the job.

If the company isn’t insured, then the claim gets filed against the homeowner’s insurance. If the company is insured, then the claim gets filed against the company’s insurance.

LICENSURE – A home care agency, whether medical or non-medical, shall be issued a license consistent

with the type and extent of services provided.

CLASS A – A home care agency that provides any skilled healthcare service. Agencies with a Class A license may also provide personal care services.

CLASS B – A home care agency that provides only personal care services. An agency with a Class B license shall not provide any skilled healthcare service.

MINIMUM HOURS PER VISIT – This refers to the minimum number of hours that an agency provides service.

STATE REGISTRATION – The State of Colorado does not license homecare placement agencies. Placement agencies are registered with the state. Registration ensures that placement agencies are adhering to certain minimum standards such as background checks for caregivers and insurance requirements for agencies and caregivers.

Home Health Care Definitions 24 HOUR CARE – Refers to “around the clock treatment” in a home environment. The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver.

CARDIAC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment, specific diet information, and management of the disease process, medication management and education. Cardiac care is a program designed to help a person with heart disease return to health. Cardiac care may consist of exercise, modifying risk factors to prevent further heart damage, or psychological rehabilitation.

DIABETIC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment specific diet information, management of the disease process, medication management and education on all the above. Services are provided

by Registered Nurse under the supervision of a M.D. Some agencies may have certified diabetic nurse instructors or cardiac care specialty RN’s.

ENTERAL FEEDING – Enteral feeding, or tube feeding, is a way to deliver nutrients through a tube if you cannot take food or drink through your mouth.

INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV) – Refers to any medical treatments/ medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a MD. Some of these include: inter-infective/antibiotic therapies, hydration therapy, pain management, chemotherapy and central line care and maintenance.

MED-ALERT – Company offers a pendent or home alert system that notifies staff that user is in distress and needs immediate assistance.

NON-MEDICAL HOME CARE – Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), homemaking, companionship and other nonmedical in home care. These services are available for hire after, or in conjunction with, Medicare certified services. Private payment, Medicaid and Veterans Benefits are a few of the ways personal care can be paid for.

PSYCHIATRIC CARE – Refers to the agencies’ ability to offer services related to psychiatric support with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness.

Services may include counseling or administering of medications.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

THERAPY SERVICES (ST, PT, OT, RT) – Speech Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat speech and swallowing disorders. Speech therapy can treat speech, language, cognitive skills or swallowing.

Physical Therapy – Refers to services for the treatment and the rehabilitation process where a physical therapist will often stretch, strengthen, facilitate muscles, challenge balance, test coordination abilities, teach home exercise programs and enhance basic mobility skills.

Occupational Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments.

Patients may have mental, physical, developmental, or emotional disabilities. Therapists also help them to develop, recover, or maintain daily living and work skills. Occupational therapists help clients not only to improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for

permanent loss of function.

Respiratory Therapy – Refers to services for care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. It may include the thera-peutic use of medical gases and their equipment, environmental control systems, humidification, aerosols, ventilator support, bronchi pulmonary drainage and exercise, respiratory rehabilitation, assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintenance of natural, artificial, and mechanical airways.

TRACH CARE – Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allowing air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.

SOCIAL WORKER – A clinical social worker whose purpose in health care is to enhance, promote, maintain, and restore the best possible social abilities of the patient or family. Services provided may be preventive, developmental, or remedial in nature.

WOUND CARE – Refers to services for providing diagnosis and treatment for ulcers, pressure sores and other wounds. Treatments may include but is not limited to irrigations, dressing, and wound vacs.

Hospice Care Definitions HOSPICE Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment.

Services Provided: N-NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family teaching as needed

SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, referrals and support to meet identified needs CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations.

HOME HEALTH AIDE – Provides direct personal care to patient, emotional support to patient and family, reports identified needs to RN.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

Levels of Care: RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community, an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility.

RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a long-term care facility depending on the condition of the individual. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the Longterm care facility.

GIP – General In-Patient Care – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This level of care is usually due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. If an individual is at a care facility, room and board are covered by hospice during this period.

CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs.

It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided at the individual’s residence no matter where that may be. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for end of life or other crises that requires a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

HOSPICE CARE DEFINITIONS

VOLUNTEER – Provides respite and needed non-medical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement.

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice,24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.

AROMATHERAPY – Uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical well-being.

This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.

Advance Directives: Sarah was young, in her thirties. She Sarah’s Story had been in a horrific car accident, left a quadriplegic, unable to speak or do anything for herself. She was being kept alive by a feeding tube inserted in her nose. The liquid meals, while keeping her alive, left her more than uncomfortable.

Her place of residence was now at a long-term nursing care facility, operated by a hospital. She, like so many of us, had her own story. She didn’t have any family to speak for her. Her only way of communicating was by having a pen placed in her mouth and shuffling-out, hard-toread scribbles.

With an attorney by her side, her day had come. She wrote her wishes, asking that her artificial feedings come to an end, her discomfort come to an end, and she be allowed to start comfort care. Sarah was of sound mind, knowingly asking that the regular feedings she received, the dichotomy of her existence, come to a halt and that she receive care to make her comfortable until she could pass. The hospital denied her wishes, and they were within their rights. If death should become imminent, even if the patient is of sound mind when making such a request, it can be denied by way of protection.

Talk to your loved ones and make your wishes known. Everyone, over the age of 18 should have their Advance Directives or Colorado Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST 88 SOUTHERN COLORADO – SPRING 2018-2019

form) completed. This can include a Medical Durable Power of Attorney (MDPOA): this person, also known as your health agent, is able to make decisions for you, regarding your health, if you are unable to do so: guidelines for CPR, medical interventions for treatment and comfort care, full, selective or comfort focused; and information on artificially administered nutrition, long-term/permanent, short-term/temporary or no artificial nutrition by tube.

Sarah maintained that the feeding tube was placed against her will; she never wanted it, and had she known the state of which the accident would have left her, she would have been more prepared, would have made her wishes known ahead of time.

The artificial feeding afforded her life. But at what costs? That’s to be determined individually. Medically, it would have added fifteen to 2o years to her life. She noted many stomach inconsistencies. She was uncomfortable.

Sarah’s case was escalated to the state Supreme Court where her wishes were granted. Her regular, artificial feedings were stopped. She was then given small increments of food, spoon feedings, by mouth and medications to make her comfortable.

It’s not my desire to place judgment on Sarah or her wishes. Only to provide comfort and support to those in need; be-it to patients with serious

illnesses, family members grieving the loss of a loved one and in need of support; or quite possibly, to those who have been in a serious car wreck and seeking quality of life and wanting to be comfortable during their remaining days. ~

This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.

IN-PATIENT CARE – These hospices offer full hospice services in their on-campus unit or building.

The patient moves into the inpatient care facility to receive their hospice services rather than in the patients’ home setting.

LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPY – Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication or prefer not to, massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

MUSIC THERAPY – Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals”. A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications.

Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.

PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

PCP-OVERSIGHT – Can the hospice patient retain their own primary care physician in addition to the hospice medical director? All hospice organizations require a medical director, a physician to oversee their care. Many times the hospice medical director will work in conjunction with the patient’s own physician. The patient, family and hospice team can determine which physicians will oversee the care and certify the hospice eligibility criteria.

PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit

Questions to Start Your Senior There are about 22,000 senior Living Search housing properties in the U.S. And there are different types of senior housing within that 22,000, so figuring out which one to choose can feel a bit daunting. Asking yourself two questions – “How much can I afford?” and “What level of services do I need?” – will help you narrow your range of choices so you can find the best fit for your lifestyle and budget.

What Level of Care Do I Really Need?

Before you begin to explore senior living options near you, ask yourself two questions that will simplify your search.

How Much Can I Afford?

You may think senior living is expensive. But a lot of people are surprised at how favorably costs compare to homeownership.

First, figure out how much it costs to stay in your own home. Even if you’ve paid off your mortgage, you still have home owner’s expenses such as senior-related renovations and ongoing home maintenance issues, as well as expenses for utilities,

taxes, groceries, dining out, entertainment, etc. and don’t forget to add up any medical or in-home health care expenses.

Next, take all your financial resources into account. In addition to income and your assets, this includes long-term care insurance, veterans or surviving spouse’s benefits, retirement investments or other pension benefits.

Once you collect this information, you can establish a budget. Then you can eliminate any retirement housing options that don’t fit within it – making your search that much easier.

What Level of Services Do I Really Need?

Make an objective list of current services and support you need, as well as those you anticipate needing down the road. You may not need health services now, but the reality is that 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will need some type of long-term care (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).

Here are some broad definitions to help you determine what level of care to look for: Independent Living – offers opportunities to pursue your interests, make friends, and take care of your mind, body and spirit – all while freeing you from the burdens of homeownership. If your overall health is good and you don’t need help with ADLs (activities of daily living), this could be a good fit for you.

Assisted Living – These communities are designed to help you live more independently through personal help with ADLs, transportation and home maintenance. Consider assisted living if there are mobility issues, medication management problems, or difficulties dressing, bathing or grooming.

Skilled Nursing – Care in a licensed health care facility may be best if you need short-term rehabilitation services or a higher level of continuous care for health issues too complex to be dealt with at home or in an assisted living facility.

Life Plan Communities – Also known as CCRCs (continuing care retirement communities), this is an option that offers a continuum of care that includes independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. It allows you to enjoy your independent lifestyle now and gives you access to future health care at controlled costs.

REHABILITATION AND THERAPY – Many skilled nursing facilities offer restorative and rehabilitative physical and occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services. Short-term rehabilitation services may be provided to individuals with diagnoses such as joint replacements, stroke, etc. Long-term rehab may also be provided for permanent residents of the facility who have chronic or progressive illnesses. Occupational therapy services in this setting are generally reimbursed by Medicare Part A for short-term, acute care clients; Medicare Part B for longterm residents who require skilled services and have medically necessary need for rehab; and often by private insurance, Medicaid, or private pay for younger clients.

RESIDENTIAL HOME – Assisted living homes are private residential homes that typically have a small number of residents who live

RESPITE CARE / SHORT-TERM STAY – Otherwise known as a short-term stay. Any provider of IL, AL, ALZ or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY – Housing designed specifically for mature adults. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths are available. Services include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal libraries, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gathering spaces. Rates are monthly, and are typically based on size/ location of apartment.

SECURED UNIT – A secured unit dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents to prevent wandering outside the community without supervision.

SHORT-TERM CARE – Acute care provided on a short term basis.

SKILLED CARE – 24 hour licensed nursing services, eight hours of which are RN covered. Patient may receive rehab services either inpatient or outpatient and may be fully dependent for ADL’s. Patients receive medications by an RN according to a licensed physicians orders.
