one with dementia or a chronic health issue, you may be wondering if an adult day program would be an appropriate solution.

Here are some questions to help you assess your situation: n Do you need occasional assistance taking care of your loved one? n Are you worried about the person’s safety when you aren’t around? n Are you leaving your loved one too often in order to do errands or go to work? n Are you taking more time off work to care for your loved one? n Would you feel better if he or she was able to enjoy a nutritious meal during the day, the opportunity to socialize more or to get more exercise? n Has a good relationship with your loved one turned into a troubled one? Are arguments increasing? n Is your loved one feeling isolated? If you can answer yes to even one of these questions, an adult day program might be the answer to your loved one’s care needs. This can be a difficult decision. You may feel guilt and or that you are not taking care of your responsibility. But keep in mind that you also need time to take care of yourself and to run errands or hold down a job without worrying about how your family member is managing at home. You also need to relax and reenergize so that you can be at your best. For your loved one, feelings of

anger, fear, denial and resistance are common first reactions at the idea of an adult day program. Understand that it may take time to make the adjustment. Here are some tips to help your loved one accept your decision: Give a convincing reason: Encourage your loved one to look at the program as her “club,” or a “class.” Schedule your family member’s visit when there is an activity she might enjoy. itan area, one of the greatest challenges faced by elders and their families is how to pay for such care. For many, the Medicaid Program is there to help. To qualify for Medicaid for longterm care, the Medicaid applicant: (1) must need a nursing home or assisted living level of care; (2) have gross monthly income of less than $8,039 (the income of the well spouse is not included in this calculation); and, (3) not have more than $2,000 in “countable assets.” “Countable assets” do not include: a home, an automobile, pre-paid burial/funeral plans, small life insurance policies, medical equipment, and most personal property. For married couples, there are some very important protections. First, the well spouse is entitled to keep $1,991 of the couples’ income (increased to a maximum of $2,981 if the well spouse has certain additional qualified expenses). Then, in addition to the home, car, personal property and other exempt assets, the well spouse is also permitted to retain roughly $119,000 in countable assets. If a Medicaid applicant has countable assets in excess of the permissible amount ($2,000 if single; $119,000 if married), there are Medicaid planning strategies which can be used to protect your es-

tate. One set of strategies involves converting excess countable assets into exempt assets. For instance, the well spouse might use some of the assets in excess of $119,000 to make improvements to the home, purchase a newer automobile, prepay burial/funeral plans for both spouses, etc. The other set of Medicaid planning strategies involves giving away assets. This only works if it’s done just right. There are penalties for giving away assets to create Medicaid eligibility. If done properly, however, a significant portion of a person’s assets can often be preserved. Because Medicaid is a very complex and rapidly changing area of law, and this is only a brief summary, individuals considering Medicaid should seek the assistance of a knowledgeable Elder Law attorney prior to acting on any such information. The Aging Workforce The percentage of persons aged 65 and older in the workforce has steadily increased over the past decade. In 2005, employees over 65 years of age accounted for 14.5% of the workforce; at the beginning of 2015, older adults made up 19% of the workforce. Recession-eaten nest eggs and increasing health care costs may be driving many older workers to delay retirement. But for already retired adults who find they need to return to the workforce, the job-seeking process may be intimidating. Having only a will in place when you die may not be enough. As MarketWatch noted recently, research from the Williams Group (a major estate planning firm) indicates that estate fights reduce inherited wealth for as many of 70% of families. inheritance is no simple matter. In a simpler world, an individual with a $3 million estate could pass away and simply leave $1 million each to his or her children – enough said, over and done. But life isn’t so simple: one heir may deserve more money as a result of a disability or fate dealing out hardships, while another may truthfully deserve less due to his or her behavior, or his or her financial success. If you feel one heir should receive more of your estate than another, that wish needs to be articulated in your estate planning. Stating these wishes before you pass away (the why, the how, the how much) and letting your heirs know

of their future value, and disagree on their destiny. Being clear about who is going to get what today (and why specific decisions are being made) may help defray potential legal challenges tomorrow. Consider leaving some things up to the kids. You could call in appraisers to set values for your real and personal property, make a list of those assets and their values, and subsequently allow your heirs to take

every year one in three adults over the age of 65 falls and 2 million are treated in the emergency room for fall-related injuries.

Knowing the risk factors for falling is the first step in preventing an incident. The most common risk factors include: a history of previous falls, balance impairment, gait abnormalities, dizziness, reduced muscle strength and flexibility, visual impairment, medications, advanced age, peripheral neuropathy and recent hospital discharge. As we age, falling becomes of greater concern, however, it is not an inevitable part of aging. The following steps can be taken to help significantly reduce the risk. Meet with your doctor: Have a discussion with your doctor about your medications. Are there any that can cause dizziness, drowsiness or cognitive impairment? These may need to be discontinued or dosing may need to be modified. Keep moving: Many older adults lose their sense of balance or experience a decreased level of coordination, flexibility and muscle strength. With your doctor’s approval, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi. There are also exercise programs designed to specifically target strength, balance and flexibility. Physical therapy is advised after a recent hospitalization or while recovering from an injury or surgery.

See your podiatrist: There are multiple foot and ankle conditions that can compromise balance during gait. Bunions and hammer toes can limit the ability to use your toes to purchase the ground and maintain balance. Calluses and corns or peripheral neuropathy can decrease tactile sensitivity, making it difficult to feel the floor under your feet. A podiatrist may be able to help reduce the risk due to these conditions. Wear sturdy shoes: Wearing slippers, socks or being barefoot has consistently been associated with an increased risk of falling. However, not all shoes are protective for falls. Avoid wearing high heels, flimsy shoes, shoes without adequate fixation (laces, straps, or buckles) and shoes with smooth tread. Have your vision checked: Older adults should have their eyes examined every year to evaluate for cataracts, retinopathy, glaucoma and other forms of visual impairment. Those with contact lenses or glasses should have the strength of their prescriptions confirmed and changed if necessary. Safety in the home: Remove fall hazards that could be tripped over and install better lighting and handrails where appropriate.

Laser cataract surgery Today’s world has benefitted from great advances in all aspects of modern medicine. Some of the most rewarding gains, in terms of outcomes for patients, have been within the field of cataract surgery. Cataract surgery works to eliminate the blurry vision and glare caused by cataracts, which can form in the lens of the aging eye. Traditionally, this has been accomplished by using a combination of surgical technique, scalpels and ultrasound. Recently there have been advances in the procedure of cataract removal, which now utilizes laser and optical coherence (OCT) technology. This breakthrough has resulted in greater safety and accuracy, and improved outcomes for patients. Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery is now available nationwide, and the results from cataract surgery have never been better. This new technology utilizes the power and accuracy of laser energy to replace many of the critical steps in traditional cataract surgery and also optimizes the execution of these steps to maximize safety and accuracy. These processes are multifactorial in their scope of effect on the eye. The laser energy is used to create all corneal incisions to enter the eye,

so a knife or scalpel is no longer required. These incisions are designed to be multi-planar, which allows for a higher level of wound sealing without sutures. The laser treats corneal astigmatism, which reduces the need for glasses following surgery. The laser also opens the natural capsule, which envelops the cataract, with a roundness, centration and precision that no human hand can duplicate. Additionally, the laser fragments the cataract, which decreases the amount of ultrasound energy required to break up the lens opacity. This theoretically is safer for the delicate endothelial cells on the inner surface of the cornea. The face of modern medicine constantly is changing to improve the lives of people with all manner of disease, and age-related degenerations. Cataract surgery is among the leaders of this continuum with Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery. Bladeless cataract surgery has already helped thousands of patients in northern Colorado. Long Term Care Insurance (LTCI) can be very daunting and intimidating for just about anyone outside of an insurance agent or financial planner. There are so many nuances and requirements that it’s very important to read your policy in full and follow the exact procedures the policy outlines in order to qualify for coverage. Every policy is different and ultimately it is up to you, the policyholder, to submit the correct information. This article is intended as a very basic guide to LTCI, it is not legal or financial advice.

How do I qualify for my LTCI? When is the best time to use it? Should I wait or should I proceed with a claim? What is the maximum daily limit? What is the maximum lifetime benefit? How do I get reimbursed? To whom does the claim get paid? All of these are very important questions. To be eligible for any type of benefit under most policies, your Physician may be required to show that you meet one of the three following benefit qualifiers: n

What is an Elimination Period? The best way to describe an elimination period is simple. It’s basically the same thing as a deductible or cash out of pocket the policy holder must pay before the benefits begin to be paid. Typically the elimination period is 0-100 days, but there are several important questions to ask. How does the policy qualify these days? Do they require service days? Calendar days? What counts as “one service day”? These are very important questions to ask when you call to review your policy. Knowing what to ask may save you money and headache. Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. Rehabilitation Hospitals, sometimes referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury or other medical conditions. They can be found within a hospital or in a free-standing building. Rehabilitation hospitals were created to provide services less costly on a per diem basis than general hospitals but provide a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. Rehabilitation Hospitals must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day.

ehabilitation is a medical specialty that helps people recovering from disabling diseases or injuries such as strokes, brain, spinal cord, or orthopedic injuries. “Rehabilitation helps patients to improve their quality of life and reduce subsequent illnesses or problems,” says Dr. Revelyn Arrogante, Medical Director of Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital. “The goal is to help a person reach the highest level of function possible – physically and cognitively. For some, this may mean learning to walk again or how to maneuver a wheelchair. For others, it may mean learning how to communicate with loved ones.” For Judy Hartman, a Scottsbluff resident, it meant getting her life back. Today, you can find Hartman gardening, camping, swimming, or even jet skiing. But two years ago, she thought none of this was possible. After a serious car accident, she was left in a wheelchair and could only walk about 5 feet with assistance. She was referred to Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital. “Even though it was more than two hours away, I was so glad I could get treatment at a hospital that’s nationally known for its care,” Hartman says. “I would have traveled even further to reach them if I had to.” Patients like Hartman who receive rehabilitative services often experience positive results in regaining or improving productivity and independence. For example, a national study commissioned by the ARA Research Institute, shows that patients treated in inpatient rehabilitation facilities live longer, have less hospital and ER visits, and remain longer in their homes without additional outpatient services. With Hartman, after 10 days of individualized therapy – and much determination – she could walk on her own, perform daily activities and was able to go home. “While I don’t wish for anyone to need these services, the good news is that we have rehabilitative services available to us right here in Johnstown that are recognized among the top 10 percent nationally,” Arrogante says. Hartman agrees. “They are my Angel Army,” she says. “They provided me with optimal conditions to heal and find peace. Two years later, I’m still so thankful and overwhelmed by the staff’s care and compassion.”

It is the only one of the ten top causes of death in America with no treatment, prevention or cure. It robs the person living with the disease of their memories and basic social skills, which can leave the caregiver feeling isolated even from the person they care for daily. In addition, studies have shown that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can impact the caregiver’s health and cognitive function. To help address the unique challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers, the nonprofit ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s has produced a book of meditations, Seasons of Caring – available at www.seasonsofcaring.org where you can read excerpts of the book free of charge. Grouped by seasons of the year, the book’s interfaith meditations offer spiritual support and motivational insights to comfort and encourage caregivers. Edited by Dr. Daniel C. Potts, Seasons of Caring features watercolors by his father, Lester, who began painting after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Dr. Potts writes, “Alzheimer’s and other dementias are no respecters of persons. In this cold, dark reality, how do we share the warm hope of spring? We share our stories of having been there before, of having found faith’s fire in our

own cold reality.” Another resource is the USAgainstAlzheimer’s Facebook Caregivers’ Community for those with Alzheimer’s, their family members and friends. Members share information and questions about caregiving and Alzheimer’s/dementia, share family updates and the stresses of caregiving, and provide advice, understanding and comfort to others. The group’s moderators have each been Alzheimer’s caregivers and maintain a warm, safe and supportive environment, offering advice from their personal experiences. Question: Have you heard of a ‘not-so-popular’ benefit called the Aid & Attendance through the VA? In 1952, Congress passed Title 38 of the US code creating the Department of Veteran’s Affair which authorized benefits for Veterans. One of these benefits was the Aid & Attendance (a.k.a. the A & A) that was created to provide non-medical care for those that qualify. An incredibly powerful benefit that covers non-medical expenses of light house cleaning, bathing, meal prep, laundry, transportation, medication reminders, companionship and much more… again, if you ‘qualify.’ Qualification requirements include the following: n over 65 years old n Veteran served 90 days of active duty, one day during a major wartime (i.e. WWII, Korean, Vietnam) n be honorably discharged n have a medical condition causing them to need assistance with ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living)

have limited income and assets (excluding home and car)

Fact: Traditional methods of getting ‘entitled’ with the A&A takes an estimated 6-15 months before care starts… why so long you ask? Because most family members don’t understand the precision and articulation of the estimated 16-18 VA required forms. When these items are submitted to the VA, in most cases they’re sent incorrectly. So what is our estimated start of care? It ranges from 2-4 weeks! It’s not voodoo or black magic but it does include an experienced staff. Moreover, there are never any hidden fees or upfront costs and remember, once you’re entitled, the benefit can remain in effect for the rest of your life! “I can only imagine how good life would have been for Ninny- had we known about this program so many years ago. My goal today is to NOT allow other ‘Ninny’s’ to go through life without the awareness of such an awesome and available offering!”

Losing Vision? What Now? Did you know that 1 in 4 families Here is the Insight is impacted by vision loss? WhethInto Vision Loss. er it is a young child losing vision because of juvenile eye disease, a working aged adult who struggles with Diabetic eye disease, or an older loved one who has Age-Related Macular Degeneration, the outcome is the same. Vision is lost and they have to learn to adapt.

According to the 2014 US Census, approximately 15% of Coloradoans are experiencing medical issues that leads to low vision, including diabetes. Low Vision is defined as the loss of vision that cannot be corrected through the use of prescription lenses and cannot be fixed through medical interventions. A person with low vision may find it difficult or impossible to accomplish activities such as reading, writing, shopping, watching television, driving a car or recognizing faces. This is where adaptation becomes a necessity. Because many people who are currently living with vision loss are over 60, (1 in 6 people over the age of 60) adaption maybe very difficult. The team at the Ensight Skills Center for visual rehabilitation urge Coloradoans to reach out to find services that will help walk them through the difficult transition. A skilled team of professionals, like the team at Ensight, can facilitate skills training, modifications

to activities, and introduce devices that can help to manage tasks. 24 HOUR ON CALL – Refers to ‘around the clock treatment’ in a home environment. The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver. Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care – Non-skilled care provided for clients with memory issues includes but not limited to establishing a routine, reminders for activities for daily living, redirecting if necessary and assistance with sleep issues or ‘sun downing’. By using creativity and caregiving skills, you can adapt routines and activities as needs change. BONDED – Being bonded means that a bonding company has secured money that is available to the consumer in the event they file a claim against the company. HOMEMAKER/COMPANION – Non-medical assistance with meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, errands, activities, outings, companion-ship and other household duties. These agencies are licensed by the state. HOURLY MINIMUM – This refers to the minimum number of hours that an agency provides service. INSURED – This refers to what happens if someone gets hurt on the job. If the company isn’t insured, then the claim gets filed against the homeowner’s insurance. If the company is insured, then the claim gets filed against the company’s insurance.

LICENSURE – A home care agency, whether medical or non-medical, shall be issued a license consistent with the type and extent of services provided. CLASS A – A home care agency that provides any skilled healthcare service. Agencies with a Class A license may also provide personal care services. CLASS B – A home care agency that provides only personal care services. An agency with a Class B license shall not provide any skilled healthcare service. STATE REGISTRATION – The State of Colorado does not license homecare placement agencies. Placement agencies are registered with the state. Registration ensures that placement agencies are adhering to certain minimum standards such as background checks for caregivers and insurance requirements for agencies and caregivers.

The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver. 24 HOUR ON CALL – Refers to someone being available 24 hours a day to speak with you. CARDIAC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment, specific diet information, and management of the disease process, medication management and education. Cardiac care is a program designed to help a person with heart disease return to health. Cardiac care may consist of exercise, modifying risk factors to prevent further heart damage, or psychological rehabilitation. DIABETIC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment specific diet information, management of the disease process, medication management and education on all the above. Services are provided by Registered Nurse under the supervision of a M.D. Some agencies may have certified diabetic nurse instructors or cardiac care specialty RN’s in their employ. ENTERAL FEEDING – Enteral feeding, or tube feeding, is a way to deliver nutrients through a tube if you cannot take food or drink through your mouth. HOSPICE – Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness

with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment. HOUR MINIMUM – The least number of hours a Non-Medical Home Care Agency will be available for hire. Medicare certified Home Health Agencies are not on a specified time frame. INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV) – Refers to any medical treatments/ medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a MD. Some of these include: inter-infective/ antibiotic therapies, hydration therapy, pain management, chemotherapy and central line care and maintenance.

Med-Alert – Company offers a pendent or home alert system that notifies staff that user is in distress and needs immediate assistance. Supportive Services is specialized medical care focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress associated with serious illness. The goal is to provide the highest level of medical assistance, comfort, guidance and emotional support to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family as they navigate through the illness. Individuals diagnosed with cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease, kidney failure, ALS, HIV/ AIDS and Multiple Sclerosis may all benefit from Supportive Services– but is certainly not limited to those ailments. Unlike hospice care, Supportive Services may be provided at any age and at any stage during a person’s illness, no matter the diagnosis. Supportive Services may even start as early as the time of diagnosis. It is appropriate for patients who are on treatment for a curable disease, or living with a chronic ailment such as pulmonary disease. For the patient, Supportive Services can assist with shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety, depression, poor appetite, weakness and other challenging day-to-day symptoms. The goal is to ensure as much comfort and physical activity as possible. For the family, Supportive Services

can assist in executing a plan of care that includes an understanding of the challenges that may arise; an assessment of the pros and cons of each medical intervention; acknowledgement of fears and concerns about the future, as well as guidance and education on community resources and financial issues.

RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a longterm care facility depending on the condition of the individual. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the Long-term care facility. GIP – General In-Patient Care – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This level of care is usually due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. If an individual is at a care facility, room and board are covered by hospice during this period. CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided at the individual’s residence no matter where that may be. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent

death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for end of life or other crises that requires a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice,24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays. AROMATHERAPY – Uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical wellbeing. This is not reimbursed by Medicare. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting. INDIGENT PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients. IN-PATIENT CARE – These hospices offer full hospice services in their on-campus unit or building. LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPY – Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication or prefer not to, massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare. MUSIC THERAPY – Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals”. A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare. PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency. PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing pa-

tients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. PCP-OVERSIGHT – Can the hospice patient retain their own primary care physician in addition to the hospice medical director? All hospice organizations require a medical director, a physician to oversee their care. Many times the hospice medical director will work in conjunction with the patient’s own physician. The patient, family and hospice team can determine which physicians will oversee the care and certify the hospice eligibility criteria. PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare. VA CONTRACT – If the patient is not a Medicare Recipient and is covered by the VA, the VA will make payments directly to their contracted agencies. If a patient is a Veteran, but is a Medicare Recipient, they may choose any Medicare approved hospice agency for their care.

AGE RESTRICTIONS – Some communities have a restriction on the youngest age they are allowed to accept. These restrictions vary by community. ALZHEIMER’S / DEMENTIA ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY – Licensed assisted living facility or skilled nursing facility that specialize in delivering care to victims of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Specifically trained staff usually serves the special needs of this population. Amenities vary for each community.

Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) – helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants. Housing Choice Voucher Program – (Sec 8) - find your own place and use the voucher to pay for all or part of the rent. Participating households are required to pay the greater of 10% of their gross annual income or 30% of their adjusted income towards rent. To qualify, a household’s annual income must not exceed the applicable income limit for the area as adjusted by family size.

INTERMEDIATE CARE – 24 hour inpatient care residents who need licensed nursing supervision and supportive care, but do not require continuous nursing care. Residents may receive full assistance with ADL’s and transfers. Residents receive meds from a nurse following a doctor’s orders and may receive outpatient rehab services. Facilities may use a nurse as a their consultant and the residents receive periodic assessments from a licensed practitioner. MEDICAID WAIVER – An assisted living waiver may be used to transition individuals out of nursing facilities or to provide persons at risk of institutionalization with options for remaining in their communities. Assisted living waivers are designed to provide an alternative to more costly nursing home care. PRICE DEPENDENT ON LEVELS OF CARE – Flexible levels of service geared to accommodate different needs over time. Rates may vary depending on the changing levels of care while one maintains the same physical residence. PUBLIC HOUSING (PH) – affordable apartments for low-income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

RESIDENTIAL HOME – Assisted living homes are private residential homes that typically have a small number of residents who live together and receive care from live-in caretakers. Adult family homes offer room and board for seniors who want a more private, home-like community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are provided. Amenities and nursing services vary greatly between homes. Ask about their services when you tour. They are also referred to as personal board and care homes. Most accept private pay; Medicaid in some instances. RESPITE CARE / SHORT-TERM STAY – Otherwise known as a short-term stay. Any provider of IL, AL, ALZ or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time. Rates usually quoted on a daily basis and are typically inclusive of all services and amenities. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY – Housing designed specifically for mature adults. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths are available. Services include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Research by the National Institute on Aging also suggests that people who have more cognitive reserve and/ or are able to adapt healthy parts of their brain to take over for impairment in other areas may add to the genetic and/or environmental factors on their side by living a healthy lifestyle. So what actions can you take to maintain your brain, as well as overall health, as you age:

Control for risk factors that lead to chronic disease, including heart disease and diabetes (monitor and control blood pressure and cholesterol within healthy range and maintain a proper weight)

Eat a healthy, nutritious diet including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
