It can be very difficult to obtain vaccinations for those who are homebound due to disability, advanced age or bedbound status.
We are very fortunate that the Health Departments in Mobile, Baldwin and Escambia Counties will provide certain COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters in the home for those not able to go to a pharmacy or other medical provider.
In Mobile County, homebound vaccines can be obtained by either filling out a short form online at http:// mchdcares.com/ or by calling Family Health at the Mobile County Health Department at 251-410MCHD (6243). The phone number for the Baldwin County Health Department is 261-947-1910 and the Escambia County Health Department is 251-368-9188.
The Area Agency on Aging can complete the on-line registrations for COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters for persons needing this assistance, call us at 251-706-4680 for help.
COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are effective at protecting people from getting seriously ill, being hospitalized, and dying. As with other diseases, you are protected best from COVID-19 when you stay up to date with the recommended vaccines, including recommended boosters.
Updated COVID-19 boosters can
both help restore protection that has decreased since previous vaccination, and provide broader protection against newer variants. The updated, or bivalent boosters, target the most recent Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, that are more contagious and more resistant than earlier strains of Omicron.
You are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines if you have completed a COVID-19 vaccine primary series and received the most recent booster dose recommended for you by CDC. Older adults should also get an updated (bivalent) booster if all below apply.
n Age: 50 years or older
n Primary series: Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna
n Updated (bivalent) booster not yet received
n Length of time since last COVID-19 vaccine: At least 2 months ago
The Area Agency on Aging encourages older adults to obtain recom mended COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters to promote healthy, active aging.~

Many, if not most, large cemeteries are investor-owned profit oriented commercial endeavors. Regardless of how they are promoted, their ultimate driving force is generating income that can be divided among owners, often times an out of town corporation.
Mobile Memorial Gardens is different. It is an independent, not for profit (501 c13) organization that is almost a one of a kind in Alabama.

Caregiving can be a serious challenge for even the most experienced caregiver.
Dementia affects everyone differently as each person is unique and has their own needs. What may work for someone may not work for your loved one as effectively, but a caregiver can take aspects of different methods, tweak them, and then apply it to best fit their loved one’s needs.
Dementia is a cognitive disorder and your loved one cannot help the way they think, and this can lead to exaggerated stubborn behaviors. Often times, challenging behaviors are caused by a negative stimulus like pain, exhaustion, or an unmet need. One of the best skills you can have as a caregiver is observation, understand your loved one’s body language and queues to recognize when something is wrong. Dementia inhibits your loved one’s communication skills, and sometimes they won’t be able to tell you what is bothering them. You can try asking, but make sure you use simple and prompt questions, dragging out a conversation can lead to more confusion. You might notice through their body language, that they have a slight limp in their gait, telling you that they could be experiencing joint pains. Or you might notice they are
lethargic during the day, meaning something is preventing them from getting a proper night’s rest. Redirection is also an effective tactic for approaching challenging behaviors. If a loved one is agitated or combative, don’t confront and argue, redirect their attention to something else. Every person is different and has unique body language, it’s up to caregivers to take the time and understand the body language of their loved ones so they can recognize when something is wrong, because they may not have the ability to tell us themselves.
There are many skills caregivers need, and due to the ever-changing nature of dementia, it’s up to you to keep on learning, and adapting new strategies for your loved one’s care. However daunting the task may be, just remember that you are not alone! Several resources to help you are just a click or a phone call away. Whether it’s respite care, or just getting advice on how to proceed with providing care, make sure to seek help when and where you need it!

Everyone should execute a durable power of attorney for healthcare and for finances. This legal document gives someone you appoint the ability to make healthcare decisions for you if you can’t, or to handle your finances if you are unable. If you do not execute these documents and you become incapacitated suddenly, your family will be forced to go to probate court and seek a guardianship. This is an expensive and difficult process that is unnecessary in some cases if you do take care of your paperwork in advance.
A power of attorney allows someone to sign you into a hospital or nursing home. It does not make someone your boss. This document cannot be used to trump your free will. So, if you are at home recovering from an illness and wish to pay for care at home, no matter the cost, the person you appoint cannot
“overrule” your decision by using the power of attorney you gave them.
It does serve to insulate your loved one from accruing your debt. For example, your child rushes to the hospital when they get word that you are ill. When they arrive, the business office hands them paperwork to sign that “gives us permission to treat.” Later, the paperwork actually includes a financial guarantor clause. By signing in their own name, they are undertaking any associated bills. If they have a power of attorney, then they can sign your name and avoid that liability.
This is a court appointment, and in Alabama, the Probate Court of your county opens a case upon the filing of a petition for guardianship, and appoints two lawyers to your case; one lawyer will represent you – the “alleged incapacitated
person”, and the other will represent the Court. The Court requires that you be given proper notice and the opportunity to appear at a hearing. Medical evidence showing your incapacity must be sworn. If the court finds that you are incapacitated, then the Court enters an Order finding so and issues Letters of Guardianship, which gives the Guardian the ability to make healthcare decisions, or Letters of Conservatorship, which gives the Conservator the ability to handle financial matters. In this case, since the Court oversees this process and ongoing finances, then the Guardian and Conservator have the final word, even if it means doing something different than what you want.
The most important thing would be to execute your powers of attorney, because the person you appoint has priority to serve as your Guardian or Conservator. This helps the person you trust the most if something terrible happens and you aren’t able to take care of yourself. Please see an elder law attorney to find out the best way to plan for your future. Although no one wants to think about a time when we are not able to make decisions, by not deciding, you might have an uncertain future. ~

No one needs to tell older adults that exercise is good for the body. According to health statistics, Seniors have increased their physical activity rate more than 30% in the last two decades.
Seniors know physical activity helps their muscles and bones, improves balance and coordination, makes their hearts healthier and combats disease.
But, what about brain health? As researchers have begun to focus more on the cognitive benefits of exercise, studies are showing that physical activity results in amazing benefits to the Senior brain. And, improved cognitive ability combats the number one fear of older adults: the loss of their independence due to their inability to think and make decisions for themselves.
New neuroscience research is demonstrating that exercise is one of the most transformative things you can do to improve your brain. Better learning, thinking, memory and focus all help Seniors become smarter, live longer and stay in control of their own lives. Here’s how exercise boosts your brain health:
New Brain Cells. Exercise actually promotes the growth of new brain cells. One of the most significant
benefits of exercise, is the promotion of “neurogenesis,” or the creation of new brain cells. It also improves the functioning of the synapses (the space between neurons) and this allows brain cells to communicate better.
Less Anxiety, Depression and Social Isolation. Studies show that every time you move your body, beneficial neurotransmittersincluding dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin - are released into your brain. A study conducted during the Covid pandemic – when senior fitness centers were forced to shut down – tracked Seniors participating in online fitness programs, instead of in-person classes. While the typical physical benefits were shown, participants overwhelmingly reported social isolation and depression.
More Focus. Exercise improves focus and concentration. Researchers have found that a single workout improves the ability of Seniors to shift and focus attention. Improved reaction time helps with avoiding slips, trips and falls and may help keep you out of your next fender bender.
Bigger Brain. Exercise can help protect your brain against Dementia
and Alzheimer’s Disease.
The brain is like a muscle, and it gets bigger and stronger the more you exercise it. Studies show the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex (which are susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases) can better protect themselves.
How much exercise do you need to super charge your brain? First a side note, exercise does not have to be a drudgery! Walking together, doing low-impact chair exercise classes (aerobic exercise provides even more benefits because it gets your heart pumping and more oxygen circulating throughout your body), line dancing, playing a group sport, such as Pickleball, all boost your brain. You can do three to four 30-minute
workouts per week that are fun and give your brain a decent work out.
Senior Centers are a good place to start getting your brain in shape, where you can be among your peers, and classes are geared toward older adults. You will also experience a camaraderie among others that feel strongly about staying in control of their own lives.
So…get moving, build your brain and help ensure you can maintain your independence. ~

With offices in Brewton, Bay Minette, Fairhope, and Foley, Naro provides high-quality care to several communities.
In February 2021 Naro Audiology & Hearing Solutions announced their partnership with the American Institute of Balance (AIB), located in Largo, FL. AIB is one of the country’s best-known diagnostic, treatment, and educational facilities specializing in equilibrium disorders. The Institute is widely recognized for providing practitioners with the most current clinical and scientific breakthroughs in treatments. “We are proud to announce that AIB has qualified us as a Center

Naro understands the connection between hearing impairments and other health issues, and how these problems can affect patients’ personal and professional lives. With accurate diagnostic testing and top-notch resources, Naro’s skilled team can identify and treat hearing deficits and issues related to balance and dizziness with efficiency. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, Naro develops an individualized care plan for each patient, aiming not only to address hearing and balance needs, but also to improve their overall health and quality of life. ~

Hearing Aids are medical devices. Self-treatment for hearing issues (over the counter devices) could cause someone to miss out on proper ear and hearing treatment. Contact our office at 251-970-3277 for an appointment to discuss treatment .

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
$1,556 deductible (per benefit period)
It is possible to pay the $1,556 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.
Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.
Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.
No coverage outside USA. No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Most people pay monthly $170.10 (Premium could be higher based on income) $233 annual deductible. (this can increase each year) 80/20 after deductible.
Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits
Most doctors accept Medicare.
No coverage outside the USA.
No out-of-pocket maximum.
Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be avalable) These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits
When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered
Can provide benefits outside USA
Plans are available through insurance companies.
Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
There is NO additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional. Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance.

Medicare Advantage plans are governed by Medicare. They are only offered through insurance companies that have an annual contract with Medicare. They are NOT the same as Medigap policies. They must cover all Medicare approved services. Most Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.
Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).
Part B premium $170.10 is still paid (Premium can be higher depending on income)
There are many plan types available: PPO, HMO, HSA, PFFS, etc.
Plans have co-pay and / or coinsurance for covered benefits & services.
Preventive care is covered 100%.
Plans have an annual out-of pocket maximum.
Plans may have additional services and discounts, including dental, vision, gym membership & more.
There is an Annual Election Period (AEP) which runs from October 15–December 7 of each year. This is the time to make changes in company or coverage.
Must have Part A & B to enroll.
Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).

OF CARE – Flexible levels of service geared to accommodate different needs over time. Rates may vary depending on the changing levels of care while one maintains the same physical residence.
PUBLIC HOUSING (PH) – Affordable apartments for low-income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Many skilled nursing facilities offer restorative and rehabilitative physical and occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services. Short-term rehabilitation services may be provided to individuals with diagnoses such as joint replacements, stroke, etc. Long-term rehab may also be provided for permanent residents of the facility who have chronic or progressive illnesses. Occupational therapy services in this setting are generally reimbursed by Medicare Part A for short-term, acute care clients; Medicare Part B for long-term residents who require skilled services and have medically necessary need for rehab; and often by private insurance, Medicaid, or private pay for younger clients.
Assisted living homes are private residential homes that typically have a small number of residents who live together and receive care from live-
in caretakers. Adult family homes offer room and board for seniors who want a more private, home-like community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are provided. Amenities and nursing services vary greatly between homes. Ask about their services when you tour. They are also referred to as personal board and care homes. Most accept private pay; Medicaid in some instances.
STAY – Otherwise known as a shortterm stay. Any provider of IL, AL, ALZ or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time. Rates usually quoted on a daily basis and are typically inclusive of all services and amenities.
RETIREMENT COMMUNITY –Housing designed specifically for mature adults. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths are available. Services include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal librar ies, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gath ering spaces. Rates are monthly, and are typically based on size/location of apartment.
SECURED UNIT – A secured unit dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia
Perhaps you have come to the decision that you or a family member would benefit from senior living and have already begun looking into your options. You know what level of care is needed and have found the community that offers these services with the right amenities in the perfect location.
The only thing left to figure out now is how to actually pay for these senior living services. As a senior living provider in Alabama, Community Senior Life’s goal is to help individuals navigate their senior living journey every step of the way. We commit to meeting our residents’ social, spiritual, physical, and financial needs, so we are sharing some ways to pay for senior living care and services. We have Home Ownership, Assisted Living, Independent Living, and Memory Care options.
The simplest and most widely accepted way to pay for senior living is through private pay or paying
through personal finances. Any savings, income, or retirement funds can be used to cover the costs of senior living, but it’s important to be realistic and budget-conscious if you are relying solely on this source.
If you have been preparing and saving for retirement or still receive a regular income, private pay options
may be enough to cover your senior living costs. However, this is not the case for many individuals, and the cost of senior living quickly uses up what they have saved. Because of this, below are some alternative options that can be used separately or in conjunction with your retirement savings.
While it may be difficult, selling your home is a great way to cover the costs of senior living. The equity that your home has accrued over the years can be used in addition to your other private pay options and make your savings last longer.
According to Forbes Advisor, “a bridge loan is a form of short-term financing that gives individuals and businesses the flexibility to borrow money for up to a year.”
Even though a bridge loan can be a somewhat risky option since financing is only up to a year, this is a good option if you or a loved one needs to quickly move into a senior living community, but the sale of a house is still pending.
For some individuals, selling their homes is simply out of the question. Maybe they aren’t ready to part with their house, or they want to leave it to a child or grandchild. If this is you, that is okay, but you might as well make some money off of it.
To help cover the costs of senior living, renting out your home may be an option. By doing so, you will get to hold onto your house and the memories it has while also receiving a regular monthly income. This option requires more planning, though, since rental properties require upkeep and maintenance. If you do not have someone who can help with these tasks, a rental management company can help oversee the logistics, finances, and maintenance of a property.
Individuals who served in the United States military and their spouses may be entitled to benefits that can help cover the costs of senior living services. The United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) provides care resources to active-duty soldiers and veterans.

Every senior living community is different, but many people do not consider that the monthly rate for a senior living community includes more than just a place to live. This price often includes meals, a certain level of support and care services, community amenities, and home maintenance. Make sure to check with the community you are considering prior to moving in to verify everything that is included in the monthly rate.

Loneliness has long been a serious problem for older adults. With the pandemic, health and mental health issues have been exacerbated by circumstances – home orders, closed senior centers and churches, fewer family gatherings, restrictions on hospital and nursing home visitation. All have brought a face to the problem of loneliness.
Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are public health risks. Older adults are more likely to face living alone, loss of family, chronic illness and hearing loss.
The AARP Foundation and the National Council on Aging, in extensive studies, found older adults who describe themselves as lonely have a 59% greater risk of functional decline and a 45% greater risk of death. Surveys reported 17% of adults aged 65 and older are isolated (nearly 1 in 5), with 46% of women aged 75 and older living alone.
Isolation is harmful at any age but is especially dangerous for people over 50. The health risks of prolonged isolation have been found to be equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Social isolation and loneliness are associated with higher blood pressure, increased susceptibility to the flu, greater risk of heart disease, the earlier

onset of dementia, depression and $6.7 billion in additional Medicare spending annually.
Some of the most prevalent causes of isolation reported by the AARP Foundation are:
n Transportation challenges
n Poor health and well-being including hearing loss, mobility impairments, frailty, and poor mental health
n Societal barriers, such as lack of opportunities for older adults to engage and contribute, to have meaningful activities
n Lack of access and inequity, including issues of poverty, rural living and marginalized groups
So, what can help mitigate this? No matter the future, loneliness will continue to be a challenge for older adults. The Area Agency on Aging is increasing resources to address this issue by developing the Circle of Friends program.
The Circle of Friends program will include:
1Intervention by a social worker to address needs and provide home visitation when indicated.
n Feeling Good and Staying Connected workbooks to educate in habits to relieve loneliness, offers engagement activities and ways to improve connections.
n On-line resources with free access to many social, educational and health zoom classes through GetSetUP, Connect2Affect and Trualta.
n Robotic pet dogs and cats for persons with dementia
Calling: The telephone reassurance program aimed at addressing feelings of social isolation and improving mental and emotional well-being through increased socialization and friendships. The Area Agency on Aging RSVP Volunteer program will be expanded to offer friendly phone visitation, and in-person visitation when indicated between matched “friends” utilizing volunteers who have been prescreened.
Isolation Resources:
To improve social connectedness the Area Agency on Aging will provide the following resources:
n A home study toolkit and small groups calls for Chronic Disease Self-Management classes.
The Area Agency on Aging will offer free GetSetUp virtual senior center classes to those able to benefit from live zoom social get-togethers, health, travel, educational and technology classes. Trualta classes will also be available free on-line for isolated caregivers. These resources help older adults stay mentally, spiritually, and physically fit, with activities that reduce isolation and associated negative health and mental health impacts.
Circle of Friends is open to anyone age 60 or over in Mobile County who lives alone or is homebound, has little or no family or friend support, or simply would like someone to talk to on a regular basis. To volunteer for the friendly calling program, to sign up for virtual GetSetUp or Trualta classes or home wellness classes, to enroll in the Circle of Friends program or to obtain a robotic pet for a persons with dementia, contact the Area Agency on Aging at 251-706-4680. ~
