HEALTH AT HOME - NONMEDICAL CARE, HOME HEALTH CARE AND HOSPICE CARE

This section offers three different comparison grids; the first features Non-Medical Care, the second contains Home Health Agencies, and the third grid showcases Hospice Services for end of life care. First familiarize yourself with the different services that are offered by each agency. You will find definitions about each service at the beginning of each section. Many options exist; we hope this will help you find a provider to meet your specific needs.

Heart WITH ALL MY

“Take a deep breath in and hold it!” I yelled very loudly into the room. The patient had difficulty hearing me when I was standing right beside her, so my yelling from behind the glass felt futile. Everything was feeling futile that day. Work felt like I was trying to build a sandcastle right in the middle of pounding surf.

I gave her a moment to breathe in, and then pressed the exposure switch on my x-ray machine.

It was hard to tell if she’d heard my instructions, but the x-ray image that popped up looked good when I inspected it. Or at least good enough. I went back into the room and said a hasty goodbye as she climbed on her stretcher and my coworker rolled her out of the room. Quickly, I went to the computer and sent the x-rays electronically to the doctor. I knew another patient would be ushered into my room in a minute. I had already x-rayed thousands of patients in this Emergency Department over the past few years. What did it all mean?

“Oh Lord, where are you in this day?”

The next gentleman was in the room already. He was probably in his 80’s. He had a steady presence despite being a bit frail at this point in his life.

“Hi. My name is Kristina. I’m going to take a chest x-ray as part of your heart and lung checkup.”

He smiled at me, but cupped his hand to his ear. He had a hard time hearing, too. So, I tried again!

“HI! I’M GETTING YOUR CHEST X-RAY TODAY!”

He smiled and followed my lead for the two quick x-rays. Before he left, he gave me an interesting look, like he was weighing both my face and his thoughts before deciding whether or not to speak. Then he asked me a question.

“Do you know Jesus, as your Savior?”

Surprised, I nodded, yes, and said so.

“Wonderful! I could tell by your eyes!”

He could tell by my eyes?! By my eyes! On a day when I was barely going through the motions, he could tell by my eyes…what a funny thought! What a happy thought!

As I said goodbye to my new friend, I turned away to go on about my shift. But I felt different. Because of that gentleman’s boldness, I remembered again that the Spirit of the Creator God was present, and because of Him, it all matters.

I would guess we all feel like we’re building sandcastles in the surf at some point. Maybe you’ve felt like this when cleaning the house or washing the dishes or clocking in at work, again. Maybe

you’ve felt this way because your health struggles or those of a family member have left you outside of the fast-paced stream of the world. Now, when I lack purpose in my daily actions, I try to remember Colossians 3:22-23:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.”

Paul wrote these words specifically to the slaves of his time. These believers could not control what work they did, or where they lived. Yet, Paul made it clear that what they did, and most of all, why they did it and who they did it for, mattered. The God of all Creation would accept their work as meaningful!

So today, remember with me that we are not building in the sandy surf. We are building on the solid rock that is Jesus. We get to use whatever strength God has placed in our hands to do whatever work God has placed in our path and do it with all our heart!

Editor’s Note: This devotional was contributed by Kristina Harnish. Kristina has been an x-ray technologist at Lancaster General Hospital for the last 15 years. She lives on a dairy farm with her husband and finds rural life a nice counterpoint to the hospital.

JUNE 21 IS THE LONGEST DAY

On June 21, 2023 – the summer solstice and the day with the most light – Greater Pennsylvania Chapter residents will join advocates across the world to participate in The Longest Day® to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s through an activity of their choice. Together, they will use their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness to advance Alzheimer’s Association® care, support and research programs. The event coincides with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month® in June.

On The Longest Day, participants will choose an activity – biking, hiking, playing bridge, swimming, knitting and more – to shine a light on the 5.7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and the more than 16 million family members and friends providing care and support. In Pennsylvania alone, there are more than 400,000 people living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia and more than 500,000 family members and friends caring for them.

Getting started is easy and the Alzheimer’s Association can help you every step of the way. We’ll help you turn your passion into a purpose, create your own fundraising page and then provide resources to help you spread the word! Following these three simple steps will get you started helping us move towards a world without Alzheimer’s.

Start fundraising early and you’ll make an even bigger difference! The Longest Day staff and volunteers will be there to cheer you on with tools, tips and coaching.

Consider becoming a TLD Executive Committee Member. The Executive Committee gathers leads from across the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, helping to promote The Longest Day in their communities. This group meets once a month to discuss strategies on making The Longest Day a success, increase awareness for Alzheimer’s and help the Association reach their fundraising goal. What’s not to love? If you are familiar with Bellomo & Associates, you may think you already know, but peek into my world as a Bellomo employee and lead of the firm’s Life Care Planning (LCP) program for a moment… An LCP client can’t remember how to play “500 Rummy”? Client Services Coordinator, Amber and Meg spend the morning playing cards with him. The wife of a hospitalized client is worried about discharge plans?

Medicaid Paralegal, Sharee alerts Meg, who provides education, emotional support, and collaborates with the discharge planner on her behalf. A client’s bride is struggling?

Our Chief Operating Officer, Jennah gets a heads up from our Medicaid Team and sends flowers to brighten her day. A client’s financial planner needs clarification on next steps? Attorney, Jeff Bellomo, immediately reaches

out to him. A long-time Bellomo client is hospitalized and passing? Two team members visit to love on him and sit with the family… and our whole team grieves.

Another LCP client is passing? Meg is at the bedside for hours, hugging on his bride and helping to navigate decisions. The wife isn’t sure what to do now that he’s passed? Probate Paralegal, Michelle calls to ease her worries and begin her “probate education”. I had lunch with the bride recently. We talked about her journey, the tough decisions made along the way, her gratitude to the facility and hospice teams for their exceptional care. Weeks ago, the wife insisted that I thank Jeff Bellomo – she called our team “cracker jacks”. During our lunch, she talked about how thankful she is to have found our firm, citing above all else, the peace of mind she has knowing that our team is in her life, protecting her. When I returned to the office that day, Client Services Coordinator, Andrea stopped me to ask how she was doing, and Andi was sincerely interested and relieved to hear that our client was doing well. I find myself thankful that this man’s bride is still going to be in my life, despite her husband having passed, she has signed on for another year as a Bellomo maintenance client and another year of Life Care Planning for herself, as well as for her disabled adult son –a resident of a local nursing facility.

Understanding Dementia’s Effects ON YOUR LOVED ONE AND FAMILY

The feelings that an older adult experiences at the onset of dementia and memory loss—namely frustration, anxiety, and fear—are also felt by family members. And just as the person with dementia depends on sources of comfort, security and consolation, that individual’s family often requires support, as well.

Families need to understand what their loved ones are going through and how to add quality to their lives and cope with these changes. And, if families feel they can’t care for them on their own, this is understandable and acceptable. That’s when they may need guidance in selecting a memory support program. A lady is driving down a country road and sees a blossoming ornamental tree out the corner of her eye. Since she has extra time to get to her destination, she slows down and puts the car in Reverse. She wants to go back and enjoy the beauty of the tree.

This is something that a lot of us want to do in life. If we have time, we want to go back and enjoy something. The problem is that we may not be able to afford to go back.

In many ways borrowing money is the same thing. We want the money to enjoy something, but we cannot afford the payment that comes with borrowing. This is the reason that you want to go in Reverse.

A REVERSE MORTGAGE gives you money, AND you are not required to make payments on the loan. How can this be? It is actually simple. A person that has an abundance of equity in their home can essentially use their equity as a pledge in place of making a payment on the loan.

Here is one basic example. A person has a home that is worth $100,000, and they do not owe any-thing on the home. This is great, but what is the equity doing for the person? The answer is ‘noth-ing’. You cannot eat equity, you cannot

do any renovations or additions with equity, you cannot take a trip with equity, and you cannot pay for a grandchild’s education with equity. But what if you converted the equity to something useful called money? You can use the money to buy food, do renovations and additions, take a trip, and pay for college expenses. The problem with this is that to get the money, you will need to use your home as collateral for a loan, and then you will need to make payments every month. I don’t know anyone that likes to make monthly payments, and some people cannot afford to make monthly payments.

In 1989 FHA, a governmental agency, created a HECM. A HECM is a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage. This means that you can convert your equity to money, BUT you do NOT need to make a payment. This is akin to actually having your cake and being able to eat it too!

Getting back to our example of the $100,000 home that has a zero balance… A person may be able to use a HECM to access $50,000. The person would then not be required to make ANY loan payments on the $50,000. The reason is that the remaining $50,000 of equity is used to cover any amount that would be paid.

There are still requirements. You need to qualify for the loan. You need to maintain the home and pay your taxes, insurance, and other related housing expenses.

There is not anything in our world that is perfect for everyone, but practically everything is perfect for someone. A REVERSE MORTGAGE may be the perfect fit for someone that you know.

KEEP YOUR MONEY SAFE –SCAMS AND HOW THEY WORK

In the good, old days, children played outside without fear. Americans left their doors unlocked at night. The thought of a robbery – or something worse – was incomprehensible. Unfortunately, we live in a different world now.

There are people who prey on others for their own financial gain. Sometimes, those criminals break into homes to steal goods and money. Other times, the crooks are harder to spot because they present themselves as people who are trying to help.

While there are many ways that schemers attempt to dupe people out of their money, the two most common scams performed over the phone are the lottery winner and bail money scams.

The lottery winner scam involves an unknown caller contacting the victim and explaining that he or she has been randomly selected to win money. The victim is requested to wire a small amount of money to “register” his or her account to receive the lottery winnings, which will never be paid to the victim because it is a scam. Another scam involves bail money. An unknown individual will contact the victim stating that they’re the victim’s grandchild or an attorney for

24 HOUR CARE – Refers to “round the clock care” in a home environment. The care may be shared by multiple caregivers or by a single caregiver.

DIABETIC CARE – Refers to services including patient assessment specific diet information management of the disease process medication management and education on all the above. Services are provided by Registered Nurse under the supervision of a M.D. Some agencies may have certified diabetic nurse instructors or cardiac care specialty RN’s in their employ.

ENTERAL FEEDING – Enteral feeding or tube feeding is a way to deliver nutrients through a tube if you cannot take food or drink through your mouth.

HOUR MINIMUM – The least number of hours a Non-Medical Home Care Agency will be available for hire. Medicare certified Home

Health Agencies are not on a specified time frame.

HOSPICE – Refers to a comprehensive program of care to patients and families facing a life threatening illness. Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment. The dying are comforted. Professional medical care is givenand sophisticated symptom relief provided.

INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV) –

Refers to any medical treatments/ medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a MD. Some of these include: inter-infective/antibiotic therapies hydration therapy pain management chemotherapy and central line care and maintenance.

NON-MEDICAL HOME CARE –

Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s)homemaking companionship and other non-medical in home care. These services are available for hire after or in conjunction withMedicare certified services. Private payment Medicaid and Veterans Benefits are a few of the ways personal care can be paid for.

THERAPY SERVICES (STPTOTRT)

Speech Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat speech and swallowing disorders. Speech

therapy can treat speech language cognitive skills or swallowing.

Physical Therapy – Refers to services for the treatment and the rehabilitation process where a physical therapist will often stretch strengthen facilitate muscles challenge balance test coordination abilities teach home exercise programs and enhance basic mobility skills.

Occupational Therapy – Refers to services to assess and treat patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments. Patients may have mental physical developmentalor emotional disabilities. Therapists also help them to developrecoveror maintain daily living and work skills.

Respiratory Therapy – Refers to services for care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. It may include the therapeutic use of medical gases and their equipment environmen-

tal control systems humidification aerosols ventilator support bronchi pulmonary drainage and exercise respiratory rehabilitation assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitationand maintenance of natural artificial and mechanical airways.

TRACH CARE – Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstructionallow air to get to the lungsor remove secretions.

WOUND CARE – Refers to services for providing diagnosis and treatment for ulcerspressure sores and other wounds. Treatments may include but is not limited to irrigationsdressingand wound vacs. Some agencies may employ specialty nurses to provide and instruct in care specifically for patients with more complicated wounds.

HOSPICE Hospices provide individuals facing a terminal illness with care in a private residence or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to provide quality of life and to assist patients to live the last stages of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than curative treatment of the terminal illness.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

RN-REGISTERED NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family education as needed

SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, and provides counseling and support to meet identified needs, and makes referrals to other providers based on family and patient’s needs

CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient

and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations.

VOLUNTEERS – Provides companionship and needed non-medical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement.

LEVELS OF CARE:

RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in managing the individual’s disease symptoms. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence or in a healthcare facility.

RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a skilled nursing facility. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the facility.

GIP – GENERAL IN-PATIENT CARE – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This higher level of care is due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required.

The room and board are covered by hospice during this period.

CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided to the patient at their private residence or in a personal care home or assisted living facility. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and

family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for crises that require a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

THERAPY SERVICES PROVIDED:

AR-AROMA THERAPY – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community, an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility.

A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

P-PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a fourlegged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare.

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice, 24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many hospice companies provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.

HOME HEALTH – Indicates whether the hospice agency has a sister home health agency that will provide assistance with medically based home health needs such as nursing services, home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy or speech therapy.

INDIGENT PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.

PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.

PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

Senior Housing Definitions

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (ADLs) – Activities involving personal care and mobility such as bathing, dressing, toileting, walking and meal preparation.

AGE RESTRICTIONS – Some communities have a restriction on the youngest age they are allowed to accept. These restrictions vary by community.

ASSISTED LIVING RESIDENCES (AL) – Typically apartment-style with kitchenettes and private baths. Assisted living services and personal assistance with ADLs are provided. In PA there is a licensure distinction between Assisted Living Residences and Personal Care Homes. An Assisted Living Residence in PA is “a significant long-term care alternative to allow individuals to age in place… and [to] develop and maintain maximum independence, exercise decision-making and personal choice.” according to PA Code, Ch 2800.

ADULT DAY SERVICES – Most providers can elect to provide day/ night services on a short or long term basis. Rates typically include a place to rest, one or two meals and snacks and activities for the day.

CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY (“CCRC”) – There are many different types of CCRCs. There are Pay for Fee Communities (Type C), Life Plan Communities

(Type A) and even some rental models (Type D) inside CCRCs, but the unifying factor Is that they provide all levels of care - Independent Living, Assisted Living/Personal Care, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Many offer many additional amenities, such as Rehabilitation Facilities, meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal libraries, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gathering spaces.

CCRC DEFINITIONS:

BENEVOLENT PROGRAM – A program created to maintain a resident’s lifestyle when they run out of resources through no fault of their own.

FEE FOR SERVICE COMMUNITIES (TYPE C) – Includes housing, residential services and offers different levels of healthcare, but not at the same monthly cost. Where you are on the continuum of care dictates what you pay for the monthly fee. There is typically an up-front fee that varies based on the type residential amenities and other factors.

LIFE CARE COMMUNITIES (TYPE A) – Includes housing, residential services and unlimited use of healthcare services with little or no increase in monthly fees. Your monthly fees are not dependent on the level of care that you need, which is why a Life Care Community may charge a larger up-front fee, as the Life Care Community is

RENTAL AGREEMENT (TYPE D) -

Typically a small amount of rental properties are available which are not subsidized. Does not participate in the buy-in fee, nor has access to the continuum of care benefits.

INSTRUMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (IADLs) – Activities involving more complex functioning such as grocery shopping, writing checks, housework, cooking, traveling, and managing money.

INTERMEDIATE CARE – 24-hour inpatient care for residents who need licensed nursing supervision and supportive care, but do not require continuous nursing care. Residents may receive full assistance with ADL’s and transfers. Residents receive medications from a nurse following a doctor’s orders and may receive outpatient rehab services.

MEMORY CARE RESIDENCES (MC) – Licensed Assisted Living or Personal Care Homes that specialize in delivering care to patients with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Spe-

SECURED UNIT – A secured unit dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents to prevent wandering outside the community without supervision.

Everyone deserves to have opportunities and accessibility to the people, places, and experiences they want as they age.

That’s why York County is working to improve livability through enrollment in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

An easy way to evaluate if something is livable is to ask, “Does this work for people of all ages?” If the answer is yes for someone age 8 and age 80, it will benefit everyone, and make a community a better place to live, work, and play.

To accomplish this, we engage stakeholders from all sectors to discuss the goals they will commit to over the next 3 years. These are used to create an Action and Evaluation Plan.

As the plan’s administrator, Embracing Aging is responsible for tracking its progress and reporting updates to the Age-Friendly network. We also work to recruit more stakeholders to join the plan.

Embracing Aging shares the status of this work because we want residents to hold us accountable for creating a county that is a great place to age.

There are 21 businesses joining us in the plan that features 29 goals to help residents live more easily in their homes and communities.

Some of the plan’s highlights:

• York County Planning Commission’s goal to increase the variety of quality and affordable housing options has led to creating Municipal Profiles to help with housing decisions.

They also reorganized The LGAC – The Local Government Advisory Council and implemented a monthly newsletter that contains contents to help municipalities learn about resources to improve livability.

• Through rabbittransit’s work to increase older adults’ accessibility to do the things they need; they launched the Stop Hopper program in two geographical areas. Customers use a smartphone app to request a ride to and from places they wish to travel within the service zone boundaries. Following a ride request, the app provides an estimated pick-up time, tracks rides in real-time, and provides an alert upon arrival. Stop Hopper is only $2.00 per one-way trip and is FREE for seniors with a registered Free Fare ID card.

Along with the progress, there are barriers too, such as COVID’s impact on operations and capacity, dwindling pool of volunteers, competing priorities for funding dollars, and the continued stigma around aging.

Agingin PLACE

Aging in place is a term that refers to the opportunity for individuals to live where they would like to live and receive the care they need as they age.

Many people believe that when their care needs increase, it is an immediate cause to go into a “nursing home.” A nursing home is often the term used to describe any community that provides care and services to those with care needs.

Some used it to describe personal care and assisted living as well as actual skilled nursing facilities, which are, by definition, nursing homes. In Pennsylvania, skilled nursing facilities are licensed by the state and provide the highest level of care for the most frail and ill.

Today there are many options for people over 55 who desire a carefree lifestyle or live with chronic conditions that require some support in their day-to-day activities. The Baby Boomer generation represents a large portion of the United States population. Many have experienced caregiving for their parents and recognize what they want, should they need care in their advancing years.

With the development of nonmedical home care, skilled home care, home-based therapy, infusions, and just about any sort of treatment, you can now “age in place.” You can stay in your home, wherever that is, and bring in care that allows you to be safe and healthy.

Homeownership comes with its own set of responsibilities and expenses, which may become more of a burden as time goes on. That is why many retirees are deciding to move into independent living communities, eliminating the worries and isolation that come with living alone.

With independent living, and as part of many senior living communities’ philosophy, the core emphasis is always centered on health and wellness to maintain independence for as long as possible. PERSONAL CARE AND ASSISTED LIVING

Most people would use the terms interchangeably; however, in 2011, Pennsylvania legislation sought to make a distinction. Both offer housing, three meals a day, assistance with activities of daily living, and medication management. Staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In contrast, assisted living provides some skilled health care services to supplement personal care.

MEMORY CARE is long-term care for seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. These neighborhoods provide a secure and tranquil environment with structured programs and activities that instill fulfillment. Caregivers receive specialized training to support the changing needs of these residents.

NURSING HOMES provide round-the-clock clinical care overseen by trained medical personnel that encompasses skilled nursing services like IV therapy or wound care to treat chronic and acute health conditions.

CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES (CCRC)

also called Life Plan Communities, provide multiple levels of care on one campus. These care levels include independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. CCRCs require an entrance fee; the national average is approximately $300,000 to $350,000. Cost factors vary per location, housing option, and residency contract.

The Importance of Vaccines

In 2020, COVID-19 changed our lives and how we view vaccines. Today, more Americans have received their initial vaccines and are following up with regularly scheduled booster shots than ever before. But COVID vaccines aren’t the only type you should be considering this fall.

Flu Vaccines

Every year, more than 10% of Americans catch the flu. Each flu season is different, and each flu strain can affect people differently. That’s why it’s important to get the vaccine each year to protect yourself and loved ones from illness. The flu vaccine has been shown to have many benefits including reduced risk of illness, hospitalization, and even flu-related death. In 2019-2020 alone, the flu vaccine prevented an estimated 7.5 million flu illnesses and an estimated 105,000 flu-related hospitalizations.

Pneumonia Shots

Seniors should also consider receiving a Pneumonia shot. In the US, more than 250,000 individuals are hospitalized annually for pneumonia, and approximately 50,000 of those hospitalizations result in death. Adults aged 65 years or older are at a higher risk of catching bacterial pneumonia, as well as people with certain conditions including diabetes and chronic heart diseases. Pneumonia vaccines are shown to be highly effective at protecting against and reducing symptoms of the disease.

Shingles

Another vaccination that may go overlooked by seniors is the Shingles vaccine. Shingles is a painful rash

caused by the same virus that may have affected people as a child – the chicken pox. The CDC recommends that adults aged 50 and older receive two doses of the vaccine to prevent occurrence of the disease. In fact, the vaccines have been shown to be up to 97% effective in adults aged 50 to 69 and 91% effective in seniors over 70.

Vaccinations help protect us from harmful diseases while lessening the impact of symptoms.

They also aid in recovery time. Depending upon your insurance coverage they may even be low cost or no-cost to you. With many pharmacies and grocery stores offering them regularly they’re easy to get.

So, what’s holding you back? Talk to your pharmacist or other healthcare professional today about getting vaccinated.

These criminals make their living by creating a reality that doesn’t truly exist, whether it is the stress of a grandchild who accidentally ended up in an international jail or the elation of winning money. They have honed their craft, and they know just how to manipulate people they have never even met to invest in their lies.

They are persuasive and convincing, and can even be argumentative if victims decline their requests for money. If you find yourself in a situation like this, do not hesitate to simply hang up. Be wary when strangers call, and never share personal information over the phone.

By taking these precautions, we can safeguard our savings and our families.
