Older American’s Act Funds Much Needed The Older Americans Act established in 1965 continues Services to provide funding to a wide range of services that prevent unnecessary nursing home placement, promote healthy aging and help people age with independence and dignity where they want to live, in their home and communities. In the Pikes Peak region, El Paso, Teller and Park counties’ funds are administered through the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging. The OAA helps millions of older adults each year by providing in-home supportive services that assist them to bathe, get dressed and maintain a clean safe home. It provides transportation services to keep people engaged in the community and 19 other services like family caregiver support and vision services. The PPAAA also houses the State Health Insurance Program, providing no-cost insurance counseling for those with questions. Services are coordinated through a state four year plan. The full plan can be accessed on the Pikes Peak Area Council of Government’s

website. Highlights address stable and age-friendly housing, equity, broadband, caregiver supports and transportation resources.
Services to explore this year include the PPAAA’s Retirement Series with Ent Credit Union, Family Caregiver Support Center’s lending library and the support of the Ombudsmen. About LEAP The Colorado Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) is a federally funded program that helps eligible hard-working Colorado families, seniors and individuals pay a portion of their winter home heating costs. Our goal is to help bring warmth, comfort and safety to your home and family by assisting with heating costs. The LEAP program works to keep our communities warm during the winter (November through April) by providing assistance with heating costs, equipment repair and/or replacement of inoperable heating tools. While the program is not intended to pay the entire cost of home heating, we aim to help alleviate some of the burdens that come with Colorado’s colder months. In most cases, the energy assistance benefit is paid directly to the household energy supplier. In most cases, if you are approved for LEAP, payments are made directly to your primary heating fuel vendor and a notice will be sent to you informing you of the benefit amount. Other benefits provided by LEAP include repair or replacement of a home’s primary heating system, such as a furnace or wood-burning stove. The program does not provide financial assistance for any type of temporary or portable heating.

If your income is up to 60% of the state median income level, you may qualify for heating assistance through LEAP. The state median income level used for the 2025-26 LEAP season was released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in April 2025. Do Not Add Your Children’s Names Don’t add anyone to the deed to To Your Financial your home either. The moment you add someone (let’s call him Paul), to Accounts your account, ALL the money in that account is now yours AND Paul’s. If Paul drains the account, it is not theft because when you added Paul to the account you gave him full ownership of the money. I know Paul is a good kid and he would never do that to you. But if Paul gets a divorce, guess what is now considered his money? Your bank account, because it’s his now too. What? Paul and his wife are 100% trustworthy? If you say so, but if Paul gets sued after a fender bender, your money is now at risk again. If you need another reason not to add anyone (other than a spouse) to your accounts or deed wait until you learn it may cost Paul extra taxes. If you add Paul to assets like stocks or a rental house, you also lose the potential tax benefits he may have been eligible for if you had transferred it to him upon your death rather than before.

The final reason not to add anyone to your accounts or the deed to your home is because if you change your mind they don’t have to give it back. You may want to sell your home and get a smaller one or move to another state, but you won’t be able to sell the house if Paul doesn’t agree to it. So don’t do it. Maybe your parents or grandparents did it and it worked fine, but there are much better ways to avoid probate. The one exception is to add Paul to a specific checking or savings account so he will have access to the account in time to pay your funeral expenses. Buy a Stair Lift or Move? For those with limited mobility, single-floor living may seem the most ideal option, but there are many costs to consider—and not just financial ones.
MONEY You’ll need to compare the total cost of moving with the cost of modifying your existing home. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage sits at around 7%. If you purchased your current home when rates averaged around 4% or less, your monthly mortgage payment would be taking a big jump. On top of that, you’d have to pay agent fees, closing costs, and a variety of smaller expenses like movers, cleaners etc. A stair lift is a one time cost, starting around $3,200. TIME A straight stair lift takes only a few hours to install, and we can typically do this within just a couple of days of your purchase. If you need a curved stair lift, you’ll need to wait several weeks for the rails to be custom-built to fit your staircase. On the other hand, it’s unlikely that you’d be able to find, purchase, and move into a new home within a month. Housing inventory of one story homes is low so it could take even more time to find

It is the wish of all who enter the workforce to retire one day. Most of us do retire but at different ages depending on many factors. Some want to work for as long as possible and in some cases forget to review the benefits only available after the age of 65. It is here where mistakes are made if you do not do any research. The earliest you can draw Social Security benefits is 62. If you are unable to work and are disabled prior to age 62 the Social Security Administration provides benefits that can support you until retirement. Most people are required to apply for Medicare at 65 or after 24 months
of Social Security disability with the exception of those with other creditable coverage. The reason for this is that the Federal Government and the State Government share the load for healthcare and support for those retiring or disabled. If you do not become aware of these guidelines you could risk being penalized. This is usually a monetary penalty applied to your premiums once you finally get your benefits in place. Lower Back Pain’s Missing Piece: Four out of five people will suffer Sacroiliac Joint from back pain in their lifetime. For Dysfunction many it’s debilitating and impacts their quality of life. Their pain can go on for years without relief.
One common cause of low back pain originates from the sacroiliac or SI joint. The SI joint is located in the pelvis and links the iliac bone (pelvis) to the sacrum (lowest part of the spine above the tailbone). This joint transfers weight and forces between your upper body and legs. It is an essential component for shock absorption to prevent impact forces during walking from reaching the spine. Sacroiliac joint disorders are commonly misdiagnosed in patients with low back pain due to the similarity of symptoms with other spinal conditions such as a herniated disc or sciatica. Pain generated from SI joint disorders occurs in varying degrees on one or both sides of the low back. The pain can also be felt in the groin, hip, thigh, buttocks, and down the back of the leg. Certain movements or positions can provoke pain in the SI joint. Many people experience pain when sitting and will shift their weight to the opposite side. Moving from a seated position to standing, twisting, climbing stairs, crossing legs, rolling over in bed, getting in/out of the car,

and lifting may also cause pain. SI joint disorders affect both males and females, although they are more common in women. Many women experience low back pain during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, added weight, and compensatory changes in walking patterns. Postpartum the SI joints usually revert to their normal, stabilized position. For 20% of women, full tightening does not occur and they develop varying degrees of chronic low back pain. Pain in the sacroiliac joints can also be caused by age related degenerative changes, trauma, previous lumbar fusion, degenerative sacroiliitis, or other conditions such as Ankylosing Spondylitis. Most people respond to conservative treatments including physical therapy, SI joint injections, chiropractic manipulations, or radiofrequency ablations. We can never repay those who sacrificed so much, but we can remember them by name. Allan R. Simpson enlisted in the Army when he was just 17 years old. As he completed his basic training at Schofield Army base in Hawaii, he had no idea that he would endure some of the most grueling conditions in the Chosin Reservoir region of North Korea. Working as an Army Mountaineer, Simpson’s assignment was demolishing bridges to prevent enemy troop mobilization in regions where temperatures regularly dipped to 25 below zero. Honorably discharged after 3 years of service, Simpson endured chronic medical conditions tied to the severe frostbite he acquired while in North Korea. Allan R. Simpson, and all those who served before and after him, are heroes. As Colorado’s 143,000 WWII, Korean and Vietnam War veterans age rises, the need for skilled nursing and assisted Living facilities has increased. The Veterans Administration offers skilled nursing facilities in Colorado, however there are no VA Assisted Livings in Colorado.
The dream of providing room and board, quality medication oversight, transportation, and a welcoming homestyle environment became a passion for Crestview Assisted Living’s owner Rick Simpson when he learned of this gap in care. “My dad served and sacrificed. I wanted to do something tangible to give back”. – Rick Simpson Launching in 2021, nine veterans have made the Allan R. Simpson Veterans Residential Care Quarters home! Many of whom have used their Aid and Attendance benefits to offset costs. Upon reflection of the facilities first highly successful year, Simpson said, “We mean it when we say, ‘Because you served first…It is our greatest honor to now serve you’”.~

Remember and Honor is a project dedicated to honoring our veterans by preserving their life stories, with emphasis on their time in uniform—so they are never lost, never forgotten. To date, I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with over 600 veterans from Northern Colorado. There has always been only one rule with this project: every veteran’s story matters. It doesn’t matter whether they stormed a beach or spent their service peeling potatoes in KP duty. Their voices deserve to be heard for those who would like to tell their stories. When starting this project twenty years ago, I focused on World War II and Korean War veterans because the clock was ticking with them. Of the 400 WWII veterans I’ve interviewed, only five are still with us today, as of summer 2025. My focus now is the Vietnam Veterans. The clock is now ticking for them, with age and many sadly battling the devastating effects of Agent Orange.

Plan Eliminations Resulting in Less Many seniors currently enrolled in Choice For Seniors PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) Medicare Advantage plans received notice their plans were being eliminated for 2026. The number of available plans in Colorado declined as carriers eliminated PPO’s and consolidated similar plans. This has resulted in less choice for seniors.
Most Medicare carriers are scaling back or eliminating PPO plans due to a combination of financial pressures, rising healthcare costs, and new government regulations that make PPO plans less profitable to operate. They are also consolidating plans to increase the number of enrollees per plan which creates stronger plans overall, but results in reduced choice for seniors. In the past carriers offered several plan options with minor differences in benefits to tailor plans toward certain types of clients. To rein in costs, they are now lumping more people into each plan and focusing on balancing benefits that appeal to a broader market. PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans offer more flexibility than HMO plans, allowing members to see out-of-network doctors for a higher fee. This flexibility makes PPOs inherently more expensive for insurers to manage and run, especially as healthcare costs increase across the board. Insurers are facing lower reimbursement rates from the Centers for 120 COLORADO SPRINGS - WINTER 2026-2027
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), increased member utilization following the COVID-19 pandemic and new Medicare rules which provide stronger patient protection but also add administrative costs for insurers. Additionally, changes stemming from the Inflation Reduction Act, such as the annual out-of-pocket cap for prescription drugs which transfers more cost to insurers, are pressuring companies to find cost savings elsewhere. The plan terminations disproportionately affect PPO plans often in rural areas where it is more difficult to establish a cost-effective network of providers. Even in more populated areas it is leading many seniors to be pushed into Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans as their only option. Overall, most seniors will see the number of carriers, plan types and the number of plans offered per area reduced for 2026 with many carriers focusing on regrouping for 2027. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by AIS Medicare & More – Jolynn Allen – President – 719-404-3202.
