From one striped animal to another, Cool Cat is helping raise money to house the new zebras coming to Brevard Zoo by tooting its horn for Jazzoo. The contemporary sculpture was specially designed by Viera High School art students and is being posted at community events and on site to promote ticket sales for the popular zoo fundraiser.

“Wow, we are amazed at the incredible job Viera High School’s Art Department did in capturing the fun times to be had at our upcoming Jazzoo,” said Karen Davis, development director at Brevard Zoo and coordinator for the event.

“It is a perfect artistic tribute.”

The creation features a stylized tiger-striped tabby cat playing a saxophone, sitting upon a specially crafted garbage can. It performs double duty because viewers are encouraged to donate to the zoo as well as attend the fifth annual Jazzoo, a live music and food event at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

It is a generous, selfless act, but one that provides an indirect benefit in return.

Suntree author Jaimie M. Engle donated and shipped 50 copies of her popular book aimed at elementary to middle-school age children to an orphanage in Africa that is so poor that there

The books are scheduled for distribution at the orphanage in Botswana in early December.

Her debut novel, “Clifton Chase” tells of a local boy chosen for heroic deeds who travels through time to the year 1485. Children learn about history while discovering an exciting tale that includes ancient kings and princes, dragons, dwarfs, and talking mermaids.

References to local landmarks like Wickham Park help to put area young readers in the hero’s shoes.

“I wanted to write a book that taught historical facts hidden beneath a fun story,” Engle said.

The novel was inspired from the famous oil painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg, in which he depicts the Battle of Bosworth Field, where King Richard III was defeated and the War of the Roses

officially ended. Engle researched the battle and discovered the fates of the king’s nephews, Edward V and Richard Plantagenet, who were locked in the Tower of London and never seen again. In her book, Clifton plays a key role in the overthrow of the tyrant king with his inspired derring-do.

While Engle’s impact across the globe has lifealtering possibilities, her affect on local children is manifold as well. She does private tutoring and homeschool classes, and offers free writing courses through the public libraries.

Gifted-program teachers Kitt Kane at Suntree and Sue Reiter at Quest elementary schools are assisting in the development of a teacher’s guide to accompany the book, using Common Core standards to determine which sections are best received by their students before the book is released.

Nature festival wants no child left inside

Recycle Brevard will roll out a new name at its fourth annual festival Saturday, Nov. 15 at POW/MIA Park in Suntree on U.S. 1 north of Pineda Causeway.

The reason for the new name? Being a good steward of the Earth requires much more than recycling, according to the nonprofit’s founder.

The 3Rs & Beyond Family Festival is “A Celebration of Sustainability,” and will showcase the local rock stars and their agencies that reduce, reuse and recycle, such as Brevard Zoo, the Reusable Resources Adventure Center, Eastern Florida State College and the Florida Institute of Technology Environmental Club. Representatives will lead children in arts, crafts and other hands-on environmental interactivities.

“With the work we have been doing in the last year of our development, we see that it really is much more about conservation overall rather than simply recycling,” said Marcia Booth, founder and director of 3Rs and Beyond, which will retain its use of Recycle Brevard name for related purposes and for its official presence as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity entity, the status it received in the past year.

Booth was named one of 10 recipients of the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards in April, named for the Suntree resident and Florida Naturalist who helped make the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands the go-to spot for wildlife photographers and nature tourists.

nature, and that while recycling is vitally important, it is one piece in the puzzle,” Booth said.

Booth is the founder of an environmental program at her daughter’s Manatee Elementary School, helping the school to earn a major “green” award and designation. She is a fixture at area environmental festivals and has launched numerous other community projects. The newest is the No Child Left Inside Awards, which seeks to reward and inspire individuals and entities who offer creative outdoor nature activities for children.

The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. festival will feature interactive animal characters brought to life by student performers from the Viera Studio for the Performing Arts. Participants can vote for their favorite Creative Recycled Art Contest entry,

another Booth brainchild.

Whether they be accomplished, awardwinning or simply an army of one, presenters hope to inspire young and wise alike that the actions of one person can and do make a difference, Booth said. River Grace, young teen winner of the 2013 Broadcom MASTERS National Science Competition, and his father, Dr. Michael Grace, associate dean and professor of Biological Sciences at FIT, will perform together and give an update on River’s winning “dancing tortoises” project. Third-grader Lily will discuss how her actions changed her community’s recycling habits.

Expert exhibitors will include the Solid Waste Management Department, Brevard Nature Alliance, Anglers for Conservation, Sebastian Inlet Surfrider and many more. Educational

films “Bag It” and others will be presented by The Story of

Stuff Project.

Festival admission is free, but donations of gently used toys are greatly appreciated and can be swapped for other toys or simply donated to Devereux, which runs a residential school in Viera for children with emotional challenges, coordinates foster care services in Brevard and provides behavioral health and intellectual/developmental disabilities services for youth.

Student wins trip to Washington D.C.

Talk about beefing up your college application.

Viera High senior Emily Hazen found out this past September she had won the high school student category of the Engineering for You Video Contest put on by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE).

For her win, Hazen received $5,000 and a trip to Washington D.C. to attend the NAE’s 50th Anniversary celebration at the Academy’s annual meeting.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt spoke at the meeting, as did U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell.

There were also professors from prestigious schools like Stanford and Duke and a number of foreign dignitaries as well.

“I met a lot of people who were engineers, very successful,” Hazen said. “I actually ate brunch with the chair of the committee (Robert Cook) who judged our videos. He invented RenderMan, which is the program Pixar uses to render all their frames, the textures and lighting.

“Which is funny, because that’s kind of what I want to do. I want to do the rendering and the shading and lighting for animation, or even live action. It was kind of cool to meet the guy who kind of changed how that sort of stuff

She wrote the script, made the video and used the school’s audio room to lay down her narrative.

“I talked about MRIs, bridges, buildings that can stand the power of (earth) quakes,” Hazen said. “The title was, ‘Engineering is Incredible.’ They had a very broad theme that they wanted us to follow, so I made sure I highlighted as much as I could.

Blood, sweat and tears mix with mud in challenge course

Virgin, 33, marketing representative for Wuesthoff Health System on Spyglass Hill Road in Viera, and her boyfriend, Beil, 47, competed in their first extreme obstacle race Sept. 20. The Reebok Spartan Race World Championships at Killington Mountain Resort & Ski Area in Killington, Vt. featured a 16.3-mile “Beast” course and its 35 obstacles, which the pair completed in 7 hours, 58 minutes.

The couple crawled though mud and under barbed wire, swam in 50-degree water, scaled walls from 4 to 8 feet high, climbed ropes, tossed spears into hay bales, pulled tires and cement cinderblocks, carried sandbags and hauled rockfilled 5-gallon buckets up and down Mount Killington during the grueling race, which attracted more than 10,000 competitors from 17 countries. An uncompleted obstacle meant a punishment of 30 “burpees,” or squat thrusts.

Virgin finished 46th out of 224 open-race competitors in her 30- to 34-year-old age group.

“I was very surprised. I definitely was taken aback by that,” Virgin said with pride of her significant accomplishment. The Dallas native came to Florida in 2007 and is pursuing her master’s degree in health services administration at the University of Central Florida.

Beil stuck by Virgin’s side the whole race, finishing 99th out of 285 participants in the 45- to 49-year-old age group.

“He said we signed up together, we trained together and we’re going to finish the race together,” she said. “That was the only way I think that I could finish. Not one time did he ever complain about being tired or anything hurting. I slipped and bashed

The Viera Company advances principals for land use planning, general counsel VIERA VOICE STAFF REPORT

The Viera Company has appointed Todd Pokrywa as senior vice president for land use planning and development and promoted Jay Decator III to senior vice president and general counsel.

Pokrywa will be in charge of planning and directing the development process for land owned and managed

by The Viera Company, primarily the ongoing expansion of Viera, a masterplanned community.

“I am very excited to be part of such an inspiring organization with a track record and reputation for business integrity, environmental stewardship and a commitment to quality development,” Pokrywa said.

“It’s a distinct honor to join The Viera Company in this capacity and I am eager to begin working with their extraordinary team to build upon what has been created over the past 25 years in this vibrant master planned and mixed use community.”

Pokrywa, who joined the company on Oct. 1, most recently served as vice president of strategic affairs for SchroederManatee Ranch, Inc., a land management and agribusiness company and developer of Lakewood Ranch in Manatee County.

Upon his arrival in Viera, Pokrywa plans to get involved with local nonprofit and business organizations.

“I strongly believe in giving back, and doing so requires an authentic commitment to become part of the fabric of the community in which I live,” he said.

A native of Toronto, Canada, who relocated to Florida in 1995 and became a U.S. citizen in 2010, Pokrywa graduated with honors from the University of Waterloo, Canada, with a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning.

Decator earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Florida in 1975, graduating with high honors. After graduation, he co-founded a construction company, which he operated with his brother for seven years. In 1985, he graduated with honors from the University of Florida School of Law, where he was inducted into The Order of the Coif for academic excellence.

Decator practiced real estate law in Orlando and Daytona Beach before joining The Viera Company. He and his wife, Renee, have two adult sons.

Pokrywa, the current chairman of the Association of Florida Community Developers, also is an active member of the Urban Land Institute, American Planning Association and the Florida Planning and Zoning Association. He served on the boards of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Pokrywa said he will work closely with The Viera Company team to respond to the growing community’s residential and commercial market demands, “all the while striving to make it even stronger and enduring.”

“I envision that this growing community will continue to provide a multitude of diverse residential product offerings while also introducing new and varied commercial and job creation opportunities,” he said.

There is satisfaction, to be sure, in knowing you’ve accomplished something no other team in your school’s history has ever done before.

But if you think the Viera High football team is going to be satisfied with just making the Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs for the first time … well, you just don’t know the Hawks very well.

This is one program that will not be taking a we’rejust-happy-to-be-here mentality to the field on Nov. 14 when Viera will not just play, but host, it’s first-ever postseason game.

“We’re not going to be happy just making the playoffs,” Hawks coach Kevin Mays said. “The goal isn’t over. We’re not done. The real season starts when the playoffs start.”

The list of senior classes who said they wanted to be the ones to turn things around at Viera stretches back to when the Hawks started playing varsity football eight years ago.

Last year’s group came close, going 8-2, but losses to Eau Gallie and Melbourne prevented Viera from reaching the playoffs. After defeating Eau Gallie earlier this season, Viera clinched its first playoff spot with a 2114 win at Melbourne last month.

While players like Tre and Devin Nixon, running back Zack Blanch and quarterback Hayden Kingston have received a lot of credit — and deservedly so — the Hawks are a talented, deep group all around.

The defensive line rotates eight players, the offensive line has only one senior and the linebacking corps has played well.

While there is no telling

how far the Hawks will go in the playoffs this season, one thing is for certain: With a number of young players playing key roles on this year’s team, and a JV squad that went 7-0 this season, Viera is built to last.

In its first six seasons, Viera won a total of 14 games. The Hawks have topped that number in just the past two years. Not only is that a credit to Coach Mays and his staff, but mainly to the players who have put in all the dedication and hard work.

“Every once in a while, I tell them to look back and think about what you’ve done, what you’ve created,” Mays said. “The whole school … football has a different respect about it at this point.

“The kids like it. The kids want to be a part of it. When I first got here, it was almost embarrassing to play football (at Viera). It definitely feels good.” V V

Fifty-six VEMA golfers crowded the manicured links at the Viera East Golf Club in perfect weather. Her Career Day presentation this month at DeLaura Middle School, for which Suntree and parts of Viera are zoned and where her son, Lucas attends, will be as much a fan con as it is a chance to inspire young writers to follow their dreams. The gist: it’s great to dream big, and have ways to make money in your field while you wait.

“It will be so cool to talk with the kids about balancing this with reality.”

She works closely with writing students in the Future Problem Solvers groups at local schools that aspire to national competitions. She is a writing coach to aspiring authors of all ages.

Suntree Elementary School is close to her heart for many reasons, among them that her son, Ezra, attended school there while Clifton’s journey took shape on the page.

“It’s truly awesome for these students who have watched the mom of one of

their classmates take her dream to publish a book and turn it in to something tangible they can hold in their hands,” Engle said.

Engle’s past professional experiences rival the

adventures of her protagonist. She ran a body shop, modeled bikinis, danced in the Aloha Bowl halftime show and managed a hip-hop band. Added to her current novelist personae:

Young guitar player makes his debut as Brevard’s newest music prodigy

Williams students find FAME

When Viera High School senior Travis Daigle was 3 years old, his uncle recognized that the toddler had a gift for music and began teaching him how to play the guitar.

At age 6, he had to begin occupational therapy for hand coordination and balance. He has since overcome those setbacks. At age 9, he received his first electric guitar for Christmas.

It wasn’t long afterward that Travis decided that he wanted to take lessons and learn both acoustic and electric guitar.

Ever since, music has become his obsession. He has been singing with the Viera High concert choir for four years and to this day, he takes lessons to improve his voice.

“I learned at an early age that you have to present yourself in a way that people will remember,” he said.

“That goes for vocals as well as guitar.”

Now the 17 year old plays music at more than twenty venues. His band, ROKSLYDE, is beginning to make a name for itself. But Travis often plays solo acoustic and is making a name for himself that way as well.

Six years ago a former disc jockey, Jeff Nave, realized that Travis had extraordinary talent and begin working with him as his manager.

As neighbors in the same subdivision, they spend a lot of time working out the kinks in some of Travis’ original songs and Jeff (aka Wytch Doktor) helps to get him bookings. Travis has been fortunate to play with some of Brevard’s finest rock musicians, including the

Daigle doesn’t just play music. He is now signed up with a recording studio in Palm Bay, Paradise Sound Arts. Daigle’s original song, Without War, was recorded at the studio and has gained popularity. His latest recording is Fade Away, another original piece.

Travis owns not one, but five guitars—three electric, one bass, and one acoustic.

He practices in a dedicated music room at his home.

“I will always play music,” Travis said. “It’s my passion.

I don’t play video games or watch much TV. I don’t do sports. What I do, and what I love, is music.”

“I enjoy working on projects with my students because they have such creative ideas,” said Susan West, Ph.D., NBCT, VHS art teacher. Students in the Art Club came up with the concept of a Cool Cat playing the saxophone, and then they decided it would be easier to have it sitting on something, and first considered a drum or a bongo.

“I thought a trash can would be perfect because Cool Cat is an alley cat.”

Students earned community service hours toward their Bright Futures Scholarships for the commissioned work.

“I enjoy being able to help the community, especially when it is something I enjoy,” said 12th-grader and student artist Taylor Thompson.

For a few days this month, the Merritt Island High School Auditorium will be transformed back to the 1950s. The Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a sweat-shop type of a workplace, where employees are overworked, underpaid and employee morale is at an all-time low.

The Edgewood Harlequins, the young actors in Edgewood Junior/Senior High School’s Drama Club, will present their production of “The Pajama Game’’ at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6; 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7; and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.

A 2 p.m. Sunday matinee will conclude the four-day run on Nov. 9.

Thank you for joining us at the 2014 Harvest Festival and Scarecrow Stroll. We hope you had as much fun as we did. We had nearly 2,000 visitors of every age at the Harvest Festival and more than three dozen charities reaped the rewards of generous volunteers and donations. We ran out of zucchini for our Zucchini 500 race.

The winner of four Universal Studio tickets is Stephanie Sisler. Krystle Hubble won tickets for four to the Melting Pot. Their names were drawn from nearly 500 people who voted on scarecrows after visiting them at local businesses. We hope you enjoyed yourselves.

Congratulations to our scarecrow winners. Thirty-six scarecrows were custom-built and put on display for two weeks. Our readers voted on their favorites and generous donors ensured their favorite charities were represented among the 16 finalists at the Harvest Festival on Sunday, Oct. 19.

This year’s voting and fund raising was very close, with one vote separating the top two in popular votes and only a small difference in most funds raised by Vista Florida Realty and Ace Hardware, with Olive Tree Greek Grill raising the third largest amount for the Wounded Warrior Project.

While growing up on Long Island, Eli Handler was a curious child. He learned how to navigate the route from his childhood home via the Long Island Railroad and on to the subway systems that help make New York City one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

On one of those treks, a 12-year-old Handler went to the New York City Public Library to do some research on hypnosis.

“I didn’t understand what it was about, so I put it on the shelf,’’ said the 51-yearold Handler, who opened his own hypnotherapist practice in Suntree early this year.

“I was fascinated by how it could help people.’’

At 28, Handler enlisted in the Army and trained to become a combat medical specialist. At 38, he became an Army paratrooper. Along the way, during his more than 20 years with the Army, he developed the counseling skills which have helped him to become a successful hypnotherapist.

Handler, who is a Fellow of the International Board of Hypnotherapy (FIBH), is a certified medical support clinical therapist.

“With my patients, I try to focus on those things that hurt and to throw everything else away,’’ Handler said.

“There’s garbage in your road and I try to help clear it and fix the potholes.

When we’re done, we’ll put in guard rails, plant trees and plant flowers. This is a tuneup where we fuel up and let’s go. But, we’ve got to clean the road first. I’m not complicated. I know what it feels like to be confident and happy. I want to help people tap into it today and lock it in.’’

Handler, who retired as a sergeant first class E-7 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, utilizes neurolinguistic techniques to help his patients reach their desired goals.

“Neurolinguistic programming is the study of subjective experience,’’ Handler explained.

“Everyone creates maps of their own world. In the experience of one guy, a day at the beach could be exhilarating and fun. When I get to the beach, I might not like the sand and the sun. That’s my map — the map that I have created of the world. I want people vieravoice.com

During his stint in the Army, Handler counseled soldiers who where hampered by post traumatic stress disorder.

“I didn’t want them to relive it,’’ Handler said. “That was not necessary. Hypnosis is an easy process. I want to allow the clients to access their unconscious mind to where all the beliefs are stored.’’

Potential patients who are suffering from physical ailments also can work with Handler through their own personal physician.

“There are so many people who can’t tolerate medication,’’ Handler said.

“Hypnosis can help aid in their treatment. There definitely can be a mindbody connection.’’

Other concerns might just require a couple of sessions.

“The ideal client is someone who is looking to achieve something in life or has a desire to improve,’’

Handler said. “There could be a block, a confidence issue, an anxiety issue or a fear or phobia. I want to clear that right up.’’

Besides saving lives as a medic, Handler also is proud of his two missions to Vietnam to help investigative teams search for the remains of fallen soldiers.

Viera High School Theatre Arts Department is producing “Little Women: the Musical,” by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland. Based on the 1869 semiautobiographical Louisa May Alcott family classic, the play is set in Concord, Mass. during the Civil War. The musical follows the adventures of the March girls, outspoken tomboy and aspiring writer Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind but sickly Beth, their beloved mother Marmee and their benevolent neighbors, the Lawrences, who help the March family while their father is serving as a Union Army chaplain. The letter came to Debbie Crews all the way from Africa. In a child’s earnest handwriting, the 14-yearold girl thanked the Viera resident for sending her a shoebox filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items like toothbrushes and toothpaste.

“It was very moving to get the note telling me how much it meant to her,” said Crews, who is part of the Brevard County team for Operation Christmas Child.

Organized by international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child is the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

Individuals, churches and groups help spread joy to needy children around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys and other items.

The boxes are dropped off at several local collection sites and then sent to centers in Atlanta, Ga. and Boone, N.C. for distribution to children around the world.

Since the program started in 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to more than 113 million kids in more than

150 countries. This year’s goal is to collect enough shoeboxes to reach another 10 million children.

“There are so many kids in need of hope,” said Beverly Gardner, volunteer area coordinator for Operation Christmas Child. “Each shoebox gift represents one more child who will learn he or she is loved and not forgotten.”

The 2014 Brevard goal is 15,000 shoeboxes. For many of the young recipients in impoverished faraway lands, the boxes represent the first gift they’ve ever received.

Crews, who has been filling shoeboxes since her children were young, likes to include a personal note and a photo with every box.

“I feel I am showing the children my love, even though they will never know me,” she said.

Suntree charity garners $30,000 donation to help save moms and babies

A $30,000 medical research grant awarded to the Suntree-based Preeclampsia Foundation will fund studies of the pregnancy disorder that can be deadly to both mom and baby, and its relationship to future cardiovascular disease in affected mothers.

The Community Foundation for Brevard presented the grant from the Kenneth R. Finken and Dorothy Hallam Finken Endowment Fund at a Sept. 30 reception at Suntree Office Tower, the Preeclampsia’s Foundation’s new headquarters since July.

and also to schedule an activity that I could bring and do with the children.

My primary goal was to divert materials from the landfill through a meaningful reuse project while spending time with children who need a caring adult in their lives. In that tour, I ended up learning a lot more about Devereux and other things that matter.

Devereux is “a leading nonprofit behavioral health organization [… that helps] empower children and adults with intellectual, emotional, developmental, and behavioral challenges to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.”

They offer abuse and neglect prevention services to inpatient psychiatric programs and foster care.

I had the opportunity to visit a couple of classrooms and tour their facility in Viera. I met some incredible teachers and kids. I also learned about one child who was 9 at the time and had been through 60 foster homes. Yes, 60; it is about seven different families per year since the first year of life. That really touched me and made me wonder what to do to help kids like that one who need not only material things — like shoes — but also some fun time in their lives.

So this year, donations of gently-used items (toys, clothing and shoes) brought to the fourth annual 3Rs and

Beyond Family Festival will go to Devereux. Devereux also was invited to bring some of the kids in their programs to the festival to participate in handson activities like kayaking, oyster-mat making, responsible fishing, earthfriendly crafts, biodomes, creative play, ocean friendly gardens and all other educational and fun activities that will give them a taste for caring for the Earth.

The festival will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at POW/MIA Park on U.S. 1, just north of Pineda Causeway. It is free and open to all families who would like to spend quality time with their children and connect to our environment and our community.

It will be a time for families to bond and learn together; to get information and perhaps make it grow into positive action because, after all, everything we do matters — matters for our families, for our own well-being, and for the well-being of others.

This will be a November to remember.

When Kimberlyn Day opened her upscale consignment shop Nighten Day in October 2012 in Cocoa Village, she was a novice to the furniture and antiques business. She began taking on consignments of unique furniture and accessories but soon realized she would need more space.

She leased a building across from her old location on King Street, which shares a courtyard with several other furniture and antiques businesses and a cabinet making company. She also shares office space with Atlantic Moving Solutions, her exclusive moving service.

The store is filled with everything from dining sets to sofas to beds to accessories, including authentic paintings, lamps and fixtures. The new store gives her plenty of space to display her wares without feeling claustrophobic.

When asked where most of her customers come from, she was quick to cite Viera Voice and Senior Life publications as well as snowbird business.

“The biggest compliment I have received is from a Canadian couple who said we have the most beautiful, unique offering of furniture and accessories,” Kimberlyn Day said. “We pride ourselves on offering low pressure sales techniques. It is all about you, the customer.”

She said the store is constantly accepting new pieces, including art and accessories.

“We also have a holiday room and an art room,” she said.

Kinna Blowdry Bar opened next to Belk at the Avenue in Viera on Sept. 22.

Owners Donna Sullivan and Kim Mooty are experienced hair stylists and cosmeticians. Sullivan was a successful Mary Kay consultant prior to opening the salon. Mooty had worked with Dr. Anthony Porter since 1988 in the skin care industry.

The two women wanted to open a business together that would offer patrons a luxurious experience when having their hair professionally washed and styled or their make-up artfully applied.

Many of their customers want to have special styling for weddings, homecoming events, proms and parties.

With Brevard County’s rich history of fundraising events, there are many opportunities for both women and men to receive special services for the big events.

The salon is upscale. A disco ball rotates from the ceiling, a warm and inviting electric fireplace is in one corner and there is original artwork on the walls and doors. Their motto is “Live, Laugh, Blow-Out”; their concentration on offering a fun experience is evident.

With five employees, including a professional bartender, they offer many specialized services to their clients.

Pet-friendly group opens thrift store

“We received our 501(c)(3) status in 2012. In 2013, we were able to spay over 370 and place over 130 animals, create our infrastructure — that is huge!”

So far in 2014, the group has taken in 172 animals and placed 132. Five were euthanized because of sickness, with the remainder in foster care, she said.

Animals are placed in homes according to the temperament of the animal and the needs of the recipient, she said.

“We’re looking to see what the adopter is looking for — whether it’s playful and rambunctious or a lap kitty — and then the person will select one or two cats and we’ll review the qualities they’re looking for. If they match up, that’s fine, if not, we can suggest another cat,’’ she said.

“Cats don’t require walking so they’re good for people who might be challenged mobility-wise. You don’t have to worry about them pushing you over but cats can be trippers by weaving in and out of your legs,’’ she said.

HOPE offers a variety of services, all related to helping animals.

“Some cat owners want to surrender their cats but we talk them into fostering them until we find a placement,” she said. “For fixed income people, we’ll provide the medical until the end of their lives, especially if it’s a senior cat. We ask them to try to cover the food and litter and the cost of the annual vaccines.”

Brevard County residents who are interested in putting rainwater to use on their landscapes and gardens will have the opportunity to create their own rain barrels at a workshop in November.

The workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 15 at Rockledge Gardens, 2153 U.S. Highway 1 in Rockledge.

Participants will learn about the benefits of collecting rain while enjoying hands-on construction of 55-gallon rain barrels. The workshops are sponsored

by Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, University of Florida Cooperative Extensive, Marine Resources Council and Community Matters, Inc. The rain barrel kit includes the 55-gallon barrel, hose bib, flexible downspout extender, leaf filter and a DVD of instructions for building, installing and painting the barrel. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required to ensure that all materials are available.

Open-top or closed-top barrel should be specified.

Dogs and our health: The benefits of our furry friends

For thousands of years, dogs have been domesticated and bred to have qualities humans deemed suitable — a literal transformation from wild animal to man’s best friend.

They are our companions, friends, family and service dogs. That feeling we get when we see our furry friend jump with joy, give us a kiss (and accidentally hit us with that wagging tail) is well known.

The health benefits of dog ownership, however, are often less talked about. Here, we round up the scientific evidence of how dogs can significantly enhance health and quality of life.

Dogs enhance physical and mental health

• Dog owners reap amazing cardiovascular benefits, including lower cholesterol and reduced blood pressure.

• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of visiting the doctor.

• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of being on medication for sleeping and heart issues.

• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of health deterioration after losing their significant other.

• Dogs help fight depression.

• Dog owners feel safer outside when walking their dogs.

• Having a pet can save you money on health care due to less frequent doctor’s visits — a result of greater, more stable health.

Dogs have big benefits for children

• Children who have dogs at home are more active. This leads to a more physical and healthier lifestyle.

• Children with pets have higher self-esteem.

• Children with pets have an enhanced immune system and experience fewer allergies than children who are not around pets.

• Dogs make children feel safe.

Dogs in hospital and nursing homes

• Dogs help patients become more responsive and alert.

• Residential dogs in nursing homes resulted in less fatigue, less depression and an increase in vigor for patients.

• Residents of nursing homes socialized more with each other when dogs were present.

Dogs can prevent illness and injury

• A study showed that dog owners experience less minor injuries than nondog owners.

• Pet owners have lower risk factors for coronary heart disease.

Dogs can speed up recovery from illness • Dog owners are more than 8.6 times more likely to be alive after a heart attack than non-dog owners.

• Pets allow humans to cope better after learning they have a major illness.

• Pets allow humans to feel like they have a sense of support before, during and after their illness.

• Recently widowed women with dogs are on less medication and experience less symptoms of disease than their non-dog owning counterparts.

Dogs provide unspoken therapy

• Dogs help soldiers cope with post traumatic stress disorder.

• Some programs allow dogs to be trained for the

disabled by prisoners. This helped boost the prisoners’ self-esteem and taught them nurturing skills.

• Dogs are a great stress relief for students during exams.

• Patients with schizophrenia feel safer and less stressed with friendly dogs around.

• Dogs provide love and relief from loneliness.

Dogs help the disabled

• Dogs are used as service animals for the blind, deaf and people with other disabilities.

• Dogs provide companionship and emotional support. They allow the disabled to feel more independent and help with their mobility and confidence.

Medical detection dogs

• Some dogs have been trained to look for complications such as epilepsy, diabetes and cancer due to their acute sense of smell. A dog’s nose is estimated to be from 100 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human nose.

Dogs help people be more social

• Dogs make you get out of the house.

• By walking more, you meet more people and socialize more.

• A study has shown that you appear more likeable if you appear with a dog in a photo than you would with flowers.

Both regular and casual interactions with animals can improve the physical and mental well-being of humans.

From being used for protecting farm animals and helping humans hunt for wild animals to being our friends and healers, there is clearly a mutual relationship between humans and dogs.

This theory explains why and how our bonds with our dogs and pets are so strong.

The bond between humans and their pets Biophilia Hypothesis — There is an innate bond that humans have with nature and animals. This drives us to connect with them for our physical and mental health.

Author Edward Wilson described biophilia as the “innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes” noting that “to the degree that we come to understand other organisms, we will place greater value on them, and on ourselves.”

Social Support Theory — According to this theory, social support and loneliness are opposites of each other. “Loneliness refers to the experience of deficits in social relations; social support refers to the availability of interpersonal resources.”

Companionship with our pets helps us get rid of loneliness and provides us with social support, which is needed for our health.

Humans and dogs have cohabited for thousands of years and both sides have greatly benefited. They provide us with amazing health advantages and they love us unconditionally.
