Surfer girl a finalist for Miss Pre Teen

Performance will benefit children with autism

Young Brevard musicians will perform a recital to benefit children with autism at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7 at Unitarian Fellowship Hall in Rockledge.

Headlining the performance is Suntree violinist and recent Columbia University graduate Esther Muradov, 22, and Remington Howell, 19, a University of Central Florida student with Asperger’s syndrome.

Other young performers associated with Creative Arts Foundation will also sing and play classical instruments.

The performance is hosted by Suntree piano teacher Pervin Muradov, a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology.

Funds from the recital and other events will go toward a joint recital on Oct. 3 at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where Howell will perform. A donation of $15 is requested. Unitarian Fellowship Hall is at 3115 Friendship Place.

Twelve-year-old surfer Jasmine Marie Gailey of Suntree was selected as a Florida finalist for the Miss Florida Pre Teen Pageant to be held July 18 and 19 at the Hyatt Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando.

If crowned Miss Pre Teen Florida, Jasmine will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses and air transportation to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland in California. She

Camp helps children soar

Mandy Finley abhors labels, especially when it comes to children. But without them, it’s difficult to let parents know about an exciting summer experience that may help their children.

Camp Soar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday July 20 through 24 at Calvary Chapel Melbourne at Viera Campus.

“Camp Soar is a unique program for kids and teens with ADHD, LD and high functioning Asperger’s syndrome and autism,” said Finley, director of the camp offered by Florida Counseling Center in Viera.

“It’s directed by clinical psychologists and therapists who are highly qualified to teach children in a fun, engaging, instructive and interactive way.”

Finley calls the activities “ninja therapy,” because the children are never aware they are taking part in therapy.

“If they think it is therapy, they may shut down, but they’re happily doing role play like actors on a stage, playing games, enjoying new experiences with peers, all the while learning to communicate their thoughts, feelings, reactions in appropriate ways with our professional guidance and support.”

Camp Soar participants develop: problem solving

skills using their own individual creativity; effective communication strategies; increased selfawareness; social skills; behavioral and emotional regulation; the ability to make healthy choices; the ability to cooperate and demonstrate sportsmanship; and appropriate attitudes and behavior.

Mother’s Day has new meaning for adoptive Suntree mom

Mother’s Day will be extraspecial for Laura Baumeister of Suntree.

On that day, her newly adopted 1-year-old son Theo will be dedicated at Church at Viera. Baumeister and her husband, John, already parents of two, brought Theo, a special-needs orphan with a heart condition, to the United States from China in March.

“We’re excited,” Baumeister, a former nurse practitioner turned stay-at-home mom, said of the Mother’s Day service. Theo’s new grandparents will be in town.

The Baumeisters’ desire to adopt started before they had children of their own, growing from time spent volunteering at a home for pregnant teens in Raleigh, N.C. When the couple moved

to Florida in 2013 with son Everett, now 3, and daughter Nora, now 2, they began their efforts in earnest.

Told they were not eligible for adoption from the state foster system because they hadn’t lived in the state long enough, and unwilling to adopt domestically while other infertile couples waited for a baby, the couple looked overseas, where an estimated 153 million children are orphans, Baumeister said.

The Baumeisters learned about Theo in November from their adoption agency and after accepting the referral, a friend on Facebook was able to locate his “finding” video that detailed his harrowing first few days of life.

Born with tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart condition that leaves newborns with blueness

around the mouth, hands and feet, Theo had been abandoned shortly after birth by his biological mother. “She left him wrapped in a blanket with a bottle of milk and 200 yuan — about $30 — by a public restroom on the back of a tricycle at a market,” Baumeister said. A couple found the baby and brought him to a nearby hospital.

Because of Theo’s special needs, China sped up the adoption process, Baumeister said. After collecting about $38,000 in adoption costs through fundraisers, grants and by pinching pennies, the couple traveled to a chilly orphanage in Jinan, China, about three hours south of Beijing, to bring Theo home.

“It was pretty incredible” to hold Theo for the first time, Baumeister recalled.

“Part of me just wanted to hold him so I knew and he knew that he was safe,” she said. “And then after about one minute, I was all about business: ‘Tell me what medications he’s on, tell me this, tell me that.’ ” Theo has already had one

heart surgery and must have another in about five to 10 years.

“The surgeons at Arnold Palmer Hospital think he’ll make a full recovery,” she said.

Nora is a bit jealous of her younger brother, but Everett is excited to have another sibling, Baumeister said.

“We’re adjusting well,” she said. “I think I realized in the past six weeks that you don’t have to give birth to have this life-giving maternal instinct.

I love this boy just as much as I love my biological children. He’s definitely ours.

A seed was planted in our heart years ago and I know it was because of Theo, not because of just any child.”

Spring signing day at Viera High was memorable not only for the number of athletes involved, but the sports they represented.

Tyler Holland became the first Viera lacrosse player to earn a scholarship when he signed his National Letter of Intent to play at North Greenville University.

Molly Bryan, who has agreed to walk on at Florida Atlantic University, will be the first Viera cross country runner to compete at the next level. She will also run track.

Baseball player P.J. Robinson signed with Harvard, making him the first Viera athlete to play in the Ivy League.

Also signing were Nicki Fisher (Darton State), a member of the school’s first state championship girls soccer team, baseball players Alec Neal (Daytona State College) and Jacob Buck (Florida Tech) and soccer’s Tyler Fells (Missouri Valley College).

Hawks have had in a given signing period, just another sign of how far the school has come since opening its doors in 2006.

The idea of running in college started to become a possibility for Bryan after her junior track season, and especially after her senior cross country campaign.

“I was originally doing soccer and I started track my sophomore year, just to try it out because my cousin

was running,” Bryan said.

“I was like, ‘OK, I’ll just do this for fun. We’ll see how it goes.’ And I ended up being really good at it.

“It just kind of shocked me.”

Now she is always going to be known as the first Viera cross country runner to move on and compete in college.

“It feels really good, because I worked really hard for this,” she said with

a smile. “I’m very proud of myself.”

Bryan plans to major in

Music Business.

Holland, meanwhile, took his honor of being the first lacrosse player to get a scholarship in stride.

“It’s pretty special,” he said.

Holland also considered Pfeiffer University, but chose North Greenville, a Division II program that just completed its inaugural season.

“I really like the coach and they’ve got a lot of new facilities,” Holland said.

Like Bryan, Holland decided playing in college was possible a year ago.

Getting a chance to have a moment like signing day in front of friends and family was a special day for Holland, just as it was for all Viera athletes who signed this spring. VV

Getting Corbin the ball will be crucial for Holy Trinity

The plan for the Holy Trinity football team this spring is pretty simple: Find ways to get Jashaun Corbin the ball.

“Get our best player the ball with our best plays,” head coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “It’s not rocket science.”

Holy Trinity will host Lake Placid in its spring game at 7 p.m on May 22.

The Tigers will have a lot of holes to start filling this spring with the graduation of players like record-setting quarterback/safety Daniel Welch and J’V’on Butler, a linebacker/tight end who broke the school’s receiving records.

Hooks said the Tigers will have a lot of young players manning a number

of positions next season.

In that regard, this spring will be crucial toward their development and getting them prepared for varsitylevel football this fall.

One key returner will be 6-foot-3, 255-pound center James Rauhofer, who will be a senior next season.

Cameron McKenzie, meanwhile, has got plenty of size at 6-foot-9, 315 pounds. Born in England, McKenzie played in his very first football game against defending 2A champion Victory Christian last season.

Hooks plans to move McKenzie from tackle to guard, where he won’t have to worry about operating in space.

“He’s bigger, stronger, faster and after his first six football games, he’s starting to better

understand football,” Hooks said of McKenzie.

Hooks believes the 6-foot, 179-pound rising sophomore is a Division I prospect. Colleges are already showing interest in Corbin, who doesn’t have blazing speed, but nevertheless jumps out on film because of his hands, instincts, size and his obvious playmaking ability.

In fact, because Corbin is expected to draw so much attention from opponents, it could help others make big plays.

“You know what, our coaches say he’s got ‘it,’ ” Hooks said. “That’s what he has. I could show you less than one minute of highlights of this kid and you would say, ‘(Wow).’ I guarantee you.

The All-Purpose Camp runs from June 8 to 10. The Pitching and Catchers Camp is on June 22 to 23 and the Specialized Hitting Camp takes place June 29 to 30.

It would also be easy for all of that attention to go straight to your average 17-year-old’s head and make him tough to deal with. But as Nixon has already shown, he’s not your average kid.

As Hawks coach Kevin Mays said, Nixon has remained “humble” throughout the recruiting process.

“There’s one thing you can be — humble,” Nixon said.

“That’s (the way) my mom and dad raised me; definitely be humble. This is all great and everything, but you’ve got to know high school is your No. 1 priority right now.

“Winning a state championship with your teammates this next year is what comes first right now.”

Viera, which went undefeated in the regular season on the way to its first district title last season, opened spring practice on April 27. The Hawks will play their spring game on May 21 at Spruce Creek.

By the time the spring is over, Nixon would like to have his list of potential suitors cut down to 10 to 12 schools.

His final decision will come either before or toward the end of his senior season.

Right now, he’s enjoying the moment, in part because the attention he’s getting could also help his teammates.

“That’s why I don’t want to trim my list down just yet, because as (many) colleges as we can get out here … some people might think

they’re just coming for me, but we’ve got other kids who can definitely get on the radar, too, by them just coming out here,” Nixon said.

When he’s not working on his pass catching or routerunning ability, Nixon is trying to bulk up. He’s put on 12 pounds since last season ended and hopes to weigh between 175 and 180 pounds by the start of his senior year.

It’s going to be a busy spring for Nixon … but he’s not complaining.

On March 19, the Viera East Men’s Golf Association (VEMA) completed its twoday Ryder Cup competition.

After the first day, the Blue Team was behind the Red Team 7 ½ points to 5 ½ points; however, the Blue Team pulled ahead on the second day to defeat the Red Team 14 ½ points to 11 ½ points.

In mid-April, VEMA held its annual Club Championship during a twoday period. This year’s Club Champion was Jim Minsky with a gross score of 155.

Minsky shot 82 and 73 to win the men’s championship by five strokes.

As part of VEMA’s April competition schedule, the Club Championship flight winners played an 18-hole match to determine the VEMA Masters Champion.

The competing flight winners were Tim Brown for Flight 1, Gerry Adams for Flight 2, Fred Baltazar for Flight 3 and Steve Vasilveich for Flight 4.

Jim Robinson shot his age or better during the first week of April. Robinson carded 2-under-par 70 on April 3 and shot 1-under-par 71 on April 6.

Bob Urban of Brantford Court achieved one of the most amazing feats in all of golf — the coveted hole-in-one. But what he accomplished was rarer than rare. He had two aces in less than one month. Urban aced the par-3 fourth hole on March 12 and the par-3 13th hole on April 6.

Recently the Viera East Golf Club hosted a 9-hole invitational — Diamonds in the Rough — attended by 80 golfers including Viera East and several other 9-hole lady golf leagues.

In keeping with the tournament name, there was plenty of “bling” to go around — tiaras, fake diamonds, beads, etc.

The day started with breakfast, followed by the 9-hole tournament, then a

lunch prepared by Mulligan’s Grill that was served at the Residents’ Club.

Entertainment was provided by the Viera East Singing Golfers with Sue Buttner at the piano. Door prizes of gift baskets were donated by several of the Viera East golfers.

New businesses need all the help they can get when it comes to raising awareness and spreading the word about what they can provide to the community. When Slow & Low Barbeque Bar and Grill opened a location at 5490 Stadium Parkway, they had an extra boost in this

regard from a group of Viera High School students.

VHS members of DECA, or Distributive Education Clubs of America, handled the promotion of Slow & Low’s grand opening on April 11.

This included developing an advertising strategy for the event, reaching out to local media outlets and actually manning the grand opening.

It is sponsored by major corporations like Publix and H&R Block that provide internships, jobs and scholarships. Locally, the Viera High School group is sponsored by Slow & Low Barbeque and Pizza Gallery.

“One of the greatest gifts I can give my students is real world experience,” said DECA advisor and Viera High School teacher Stacey Gammella. “Textbooks have their place, but when I can actually bring what we’re learning in class to life, the students really benefit.”

To draw in curious new customers, the nearly 100 DECA students promoted extra activities that went on during the event, including face painting and a flash mob performance by DECA students.

The DECA student project wasn’t just about bringing in business for the opening night though. The students collected customer emails to create a database for the Slow & Low owners to use for special promotions. In exchange for providing their

“I wanted to come up with something for the kids that was more like a partnership,” Gammella said. “I wanted them to see the process from the beginning to the event.”

The idea to help with the event was born when Slow & Low co-owner Nicole Smith sponsored the group’s 200 T-shirts. Gammella wanted to come up with a smart and mutually beneficial way to repay that good deed. Soon after, DECA students were brainstorming the best ways to help the new business get off the ground.

Gammella has been a business teacher at Viera High School for five years and also teaches personal finance and computer classes for college and career preparation. Nothing beats having the handson experience of working alongside a new business, though.

“I hope we get the chance to work with other businesses on projects like this. It really gives the students a chance to show what they are capable of doing, and also gives us a chance to introduce the community to DECA,” Gammella said. VV

Viera Charter School joins Faculty Softball Challenge

The Faculty Softball Challenge may be entering its 12th year, but this is a first.

Viera Charter School … come on down.

“Being the head of the whole thing, I’ve been wanting them since their first year,” said game organizer Todd Zgonc of Manatee Elementary. “We’re very excited to have them, especially with the crowd they’re going to bring.

“It’s finally the four true Viera schools, which is what I’ve always wanted.”

The games are set for May 15 at Space Coast Stadium.

Ralph Williams Elementary will play Quest Elementary

in the first game at 6 p.m., followed by Manatee Elementary vs. the Viera Charter School at 7:15.

Tickets are $2 at each school and $3 at the gate on the day of the game. Though the event is not designated as a fundraiser, proceeds will benefit all four schools.

Brevard County Manatees mascot Manny the Manatee will be on hand along with the Chick-fil-A Cow. The main sponsors are Perry Fiberglass, Space Coast Iceplex and Chick-fil-A. Last year’s game sold roughly 2,800 tickets, and that number is expected to increase dramatically with the addition of the Viera Charter School, which opened in the fall of 2013.

“As part of the Viera school community now, the charter school is very excited about becoming closer to our fellow schools around us,” said Damian Germain, who teaches physical education at the school.

“We’re just very thankful to the schools for inviting us to participate in this. It seems like a great event.”

Traditionally, the games are played on the last day of school, but this year’s event will actually take place two weeks before school lets out.

That should make for a few interesting conversations between the students and their teachers once they get back in the classroom.

“Two weeks to go back and show off your bruises,” joked Lisa Meder, a sixthgrade math teacher at Ralph Williams who has played all previous 11 games.

“We’ve got some new staff on board, so we’ve got some new people joining us,” Quest’s Katie Caruso said. “We’re excited for our rematch with Williams.”

For the Viera Charter School, the Faculty Softball Challenge will be the first of what will hopefully become a longstanding tradition.

“We’re really taking the approach — especially in our first year — that we just want to go out and have fun,” Germain said. “More than anything, we want to show our students how to be good F sports.” VV

After organizing a successful, first 5K for the Viera community, Manatee Elementary continues to receive positive news about its inaugural race.

The Dr. Seuss 5K race, which took place in March, encouraged participants to donate a gently used book.

These donations reached a total of more than 1,000. The books were picked up by the Supply Zone for Teachers, a service of the Brevard Schools Foundation. The

Older students help prepare younger scholars for FSA tests

The FCAT sweats may be in the rear view, but say hello to the Florida Standards Assessments that can be nerve-wracking for students, teachers and parents alike.

Some Viera High School math honors students gave back last month as tutors for fifth-grade students at Suntree Elementary School that was for most of them their alma mater.

Parents pitched in by bringing students back to school for an hour in the weeks leading up to the FSAs. “The tutoring sharpens their skills and builds confidence for the FSAs,” said Carol Albright, who organized fellow fifth-grade teachers Christy Fleig, Pam Bruce, Caroline Walker and Monica Slate to offer the assistance to parents and get students excited about taking part.

“I have gone to geometry, I’ve worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, and it’s really helped,” Ryan Biljan said. The age factor is a plus, said another student.

“They’ve just done what

you are going through, and they have neat tricks to teach us that are fast,” Kaylee Krininger said. “Plus, it’s kind of cool that they are high school students.”

That’s just fine with 10thgrader Mitchell Lewis, one of more than 20 high school students teaching up to 35 junior scholars each day.

Suntree resident Sylvia Schenatzky has written a book called “Beyond the Eyes: THIS IS IT Becomes a True Story,” because, she says, she couldn’t not write it.

The German-born mother of two felt chosen to tell the true story of Michael Jackson as he told it to her — after his death.

“I know people may find this very strange because it is supernatural,” Schenatzky said. “I did not want to create this book but Michael insisted on me doing this project to let everyone know there is life after death. ‘This Is It’ was to be the name of his comeback concert, but it now represents the power of the afterlife that cannot be seen, and ‘Beyond the Eyes’ refers to the all-seeing eye that many have heard of but is not fully understood.”

In the book, illustrated by artist Kate Johannsen, Schenatzky also proclaims Jackson’s innocence of child molestation charges, detailing how the accusations destroyed the singer’s life. In truth, he loved them deeply, truly, above all else, she writes.

Though not a fan of body ink, she had the word “Believe” tattooed on her arm inside a heart design that she says Jackson picked out to express love to the world.

“I am not someone who is desperate for attention or pursuing riches,” Schenatzky said. “Sometimes when a task, a calling, is placed on you so strongly, it is impossible to refuse.”

Three new stores in the third phase of Viera Shops on Lake Andrew Drive south of The Avenue Viera are scheduled to open soon.

PetSmart will have a grand opening of its new 12,000-square-foot store on Saturday, May 2, with an in-store celebration and ribbon cutting starting at 9 a.m., PetSmart spokesperson Danielle Bickelmann said.

The first 50 customers will receive a Mystery PetSmart gift card valued at up to $50, and customers who enroll in PetSmart’s PetPerks Rewards program get free T-shirts. There also will be trick training sessions by pet training instructors, free giveaways and prize drawings, Bickelmann said.

The new store will employ about 40 to 50 people, Bickelmann said.

The Viera location will be the second PetSmart in Brevard. The other is at 1800 Evans Rd. in Melbourne.

Doubles duo outpaces tennis rivals decades their junior

Don’t expect hijinks on or after court time for these doubles tennis players. David Bonnar and Russ Reinhard of Viera are serious athletes.

At age 80 and 83, they beat out players in their 60s to qualify for and advance through state trials and will head to the National Senior Tennis Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. in July.

The duo met when Reinhard started playing tennis with Bonnar as team captain, and eventually they became co-captains, typically playing for Rockledge in the Space Coast League.

They play league games and they also play for practice. Their competitions may require grueling travel.

year to qualify for state competitions, and then they aced those trials in December in Fort Myers, requiring an overnight stay for the long drive.

The Minneapolis trip will require cross-country travel at the hottest time of the year, to a destination that can be even hotter and more humid in late summer.

Their wives will join them, increasing travel costs.

All these factors were carefully considered in determining whether to accept the hard fought honor they had won to go to the nationals held only every other year.

Melbourne balks at downtown stadium for Manatees

The Washington Nationals are leaving Viera, and the Brevard County Manatees might be right behind them. But a proposal to build a 4,000-seat stadium for the team in downtown Melbourne likely has struck out.

Melbourne City Manager Mike McNees recommended on April 13 that the city abandon further talks with officials from the Manatees about building a stadium on New Haven Avenue, citing problems with buying properties needed for the project.

The proposed stadium, called Harbor City Ballpark, would have occupied a 3 ½-acre lot where a SunTrust Bank once stood.

McNees said owners of two of five parcels of land required to locate the stadium on property between New Haven Avenue and Promenade Park have no intention of selling.

Another parcel portion owned by Florida East Coast Railroad must remain as right-of-way for the railroad.

And the stadium’s size would encompass part of Melbourne Avenue as well as the Promenade Park boardwalk area between U.S. 1 and the railroad tracks.

“Vacating this property in favor of stadium construction is problematic for a number of reasons,” McNees wrote.

“Melbourne Avenue is a highly used collector road.”

McNees noted that the boardwalk was built to connect the waterfront area to downtown, “something a stadium would not accomplish.”

However, McNees recommended that Melbourne continue talks with the Manatees, a Single-A Advanced Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, on alternative locations.

the partnership structure proposed, the economic benefits to the city and region could be substantial, and that more suitable siting options may exist,” he wrote.

On March 24, City Council members had voted 6-1 — with Mayor Kathy Meehan dissenting — to start discussions with the team, Melbourne and Brevard County staff members and a South Florida landowner about the stadium project.

At that meeting, business consultant and project leader Mark LaRusso estimated that the stadium would attract 150,000 people downtown and pump about $6 million a year into the local economy.

Manatees officials also have offered to pay for half of land-acquisition costs and all stadium operating costs for 25 years.

Since 1994, the Manatees have played home games at the 8,100-seat Space Coast Stadium on Stadium Parkway.

But the minor league team may leave Viera for a smaller venue after the Washington Nationals move in 2017 to a new West Palm Beach stadium they’ll share with

the Houston Astros, who are leaving Kissimmee.

“Quite frankly, it’s a very big, expensive facility for a minor league team to take care of,” Manatees general manager Kyle Smith said. The team currently is “looking at our options going forward to try to find a long-term home here in Brevard,” he added.

The property between New Haven Avenue and Promenade Park is owned

by South Florida developer Brandon Lurie, who once planned to build a 159-foot condominium, townhouses, a restaurant and shops at the site. McNees noted that Lurie is “currently working on development options of his own.”

The Manatees are owned and operated by Central Florida Baseball Group, LLC, which is made up of chairman Dr. Tom Winters, vice chairman Dewight Titus and president Charlie Baumann.

Last year, trustees at Rollins College in Winter Park rejected a plan to build an oncampus stadium that would be home to the Manatees and the Rollins Tars baseball team. VV

Children with challenges find music an instrument of change

Renowned musician and philanthropist Arturo Echarte brought his mission to place donated musical instruments into the hands of children from low-income families to Viera. Performing at the April 9 Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards dinner at Heritage Isle Ballroom, he heralded the event’s tandem conservation-themed student arts contest. Art, photography and writing submissions were on display that evening and youth awards were given at the April 11 Viera Wetlands Nature Festival.

“Reaching children through the arts is an extremely effective way to bring them out of their shell to embrace life, to give them a sense of hope in what they can accomplish with their life and in this world,” Echarte told the sold-out crowd.

Change mission sparked during a charity event at which he was performing, when yet another attendee came up to share that he had an old instrument at home that was no longer needed. He knew of the need for instruments from performing arts charity events that his wife, Susan, frequently planned.

“Many of these children have the musical ability and desire to play music but their families cannot afford to buy them an instrument,” Echarte said. “Having their own instrument provides a reprieve from life’s stresses, an opportunity to express themselves and a way to create a unique identity.”

Echarte offers his performance skills at charity events to help nonprofits bring in funds. Because he cannot be all places at once, and to provide a greater variety, he networks with

Success stories abound.

An 11-year-old leukemia patient from a military family discovered a happy distraction from frequent hospital stays with his drum kit and lessons provided by Echarte. A Yamaha keyboard donated to a disabled Air Force veteran exposed to chemical warfare found music helped with his Autonomic Central Nervous System disorder. A boy with a muscular disability living in a homeless tent camp with his sisters and single mom improved his school performance.

“In the broader perspective, if you raise a well-adjusted child you will have a more civil, balanced adult community and world,” Echarte said. “Music and the arts play a large part in creating a well adjusted child.”

Six new conservation heroes took home a “Charlie Award” from the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards held April 9 at the Heritage Isle Clubhouse Ballroom in Viera.

“Is that what we’re calling it, a Charlie Award?

That’s all I keep hearing about,” said recipient Laurilee Thompson, founder of the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival, now the largest in the world.

“Oh, look, it’s an actual Charlie,” she said after receiving her award, which incorporates Corbeil’s most iconic photo, a baby sandhill crane peeking out from the feathers on its parent’s back.

Corbeil was a renowned nature photographer and Wetlands Ranger docent at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands adjacent to Heritage Isle.

He helped popularize the wildlife area locally and through his worldwide travels. VV

The Avenue Viera offers busy spring events schedule

Free yoga classes, live entertainment, a car show and a craft brew fest are a few of the events planned this spring at The Avenue Viera.

“We’ve got some really great events that I’m really tickled about,” Kristi Furci, marketing coordinator for the open-air shopping mall at 2261 Town Centre Ave., told about 100 people gathered April 9 at the mall’s community room for Viera Means Business, a monthly Viera Voice business networking breakfast.

Furci said The Avenue Viera’s free weekly Live After Five music series in Central Park has been moved from Fridays to Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. to capture afterwork crowds.

“Our performers come from all over the country — they’re just not local,” Furci said. “I think the last two weeks we had performers from Austin, Texas, so that’s been pretty exciting.”

The mall hosted British pop singer-songwriter Katy Tiz for a free concert April 15 as part of iHeartRadio’s On the Verge Artist music series. Furci said the iHeartRadio tour previously featured singer Meghan Trainor, whose single “All About That Bass” spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 list and whose followup, “Lips are Moving” was a Top 5 hit.

The mall presents Cruise at the Avenue, a classic car show, from 1 to 5 p.m. May 2 to benefit Boy Scouts of America.

On May 9, World of Beer hosts a craft brew festival from 1 to 5 p.m., featuring dozens of vendors offering samples of brews and live music, Furci said.

And on May 16, the mall is the site of the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia to raise money to fight the disorder

Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the 3K walk around The Avenue Viera starts at 8:50 a.m. Pre-registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children, while the day-ofevent registration fee is $25.

Furci said the mall’s free Yoga in the Park classes at 9 a.m. Saturdays in Central Park have become very popular. “It’s complimentary and the classes are led by certified yoga instructors,” she said. Participants should bring a mat and water.

The Avenue is working with the Chamber of Commerce on an upcoming Taste of Brevard event, and mall restaurants will take part, Furci said.

The Avenue Viera also plans to offer more kids’ events, Furci said. The mall

used to host Radio Disney events but no longer does so, she said.

“We’re going to be putting a lot of children’s events on the calendar,” she said.

Chelsea Handler, not for the faint of heart

Chelsea Handler, the latest bad girl of comedy, will make her way to The King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne on Thursday, May 21. The comedienne brings her brand of sharp wit to the stage at 8 p.m. for an exclusive Florida stand-up comedy engagement.

Handler first broke onto the scene with her standup comedy, and in 2002 she became one of the stars of the Oxygen Network show “Girl’s Behaving Badly.” The performer then went on to make television history in 2007 when she became only the second woman ever to host a late night show, with her E! Entertainment Network program “Chelsea Lately.” The forum of a cable network worked well for Handler’s “adult” humor, and had less content restrictions than a traditional broadcast network.

“Chelsea Lately” typically packed a monologue, guest panel and celebrity interview into each 30-minute episode.

The panel commonly consisted of Handler’s fellow comedians, staff members or celebrities. Handler and the group would take on topics ranging from current events to celebrity gossip. Handler’s interviews with guests were non-traditional, very candid and sometimes abrasive.

The show was very successful, and Handler received nominations for the People’s Choice Awards and Women’s Image Network Awards. “Chelsea Lately” concluded production in 2014, after an eight-season run.

Handler also has proven immensely successful as a writer. She has penned five New York Times bestselling books, including “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands,” “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” “Chelsea Chelsea

Strong voices in the Indian River Colony Club Chorus will again be raised in patriotic praise at the annual Armed Forces Day concert.

Nearly 300 residents are expected at the event featuring a full slate of rousing songs to be held at 5:15 p.m. May 16.

“The chorus celebrated 25 years a couple of years ago and we have a couple of members that have been with us the whole time,’’ said publicity chairman Jacqui Bermani, a member for six years.

The 35-to-40-member group holds two concerts a year, including a performance during the

Christmas season. They practice from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday.

“It’s just all of us getting together and having a good time singing,’’ Bermani said.

The Armed Forces salute will include Melbourne High School freshman and JROTC member Colin Patterson on trumpet. Songs include “Salute to the Armed Forces,” “Song to the Unsung Hero,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” (sung by the women) and a finale of “You Are My Sunshine” ending with “God Bless America.”

“We do a lot of audience sing-alongs,’’ Bermani said.

The music director is Kathy Westrip, who was hired from the outside, and the group

is accompanied by resident pianist Edith Schrope. Most of the chorus members, and the community, are military retirees.

All chorus members are retired and represent seniors ranging in age from 60 to about 90, she said.

As members come and go or age out due to health problems, other volunteer singers are waiting and willing to step in and fill the spot to keep the chorus active and singing out, Bermani said.

“It’s a wide range and it pretty much stays that way.

We have some incredible voices and this year the men especially are very strong,’’ she said. VV
