Everyone stood as Mike Alba, the principal at Viera High School, uttered his last request in the turning of the tassels for the Class of 2016 during commencement exercises held at Viera High School Stadium on Saturday, May 21.

Moments later, the students paraded out to the class song “See You Again’’ by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.

Under the command of band directors Dominick Eggen and Maria Dix, the Viera High Band played for the processional.

Six students stood out academically as principal’s scholars and had prominent roles during the commencement exercises.

Versatile local actor remains focused, wins Telly Award

Jonathan McFadden, 32, prides himself on working as an actor in a variety of ways.

That work includes commercials and as owner of Prodigy Talent Training in Rocklege, where for the past year he has built a business of passing along real-world acting skills.

McFadden has received recognition for acting in the form of a Telly Award for his work on a 2014 commercial

for the National Restaurant Association.

“I did the gig, got the check and didn’t think much about it until I got a call recently that I had won a Bronze Telly. They had called me to do another commercial and said by the way you won a Telly. It’s your peers that decided that the work is exceptional. That why it means so much to me,’’ he said.

The judges, who are made up of former winners, rate each entry on a 10-point scale. Entries do not compete against each other. Rather, they compete against a high standard of excellence.

Judges score entries on a performance scale and winning entries are awarded as Silver or Bronze Telly Award winners. McFadden opened up his own school operation a year ago “to give actors on-set experience so they know what it’s like,’’ he said.

And that experience can take many forms, including actually shooting commercials and model portfolios and giving the students — teens and adults — valuable hands-on experience, McFadden said.

“I tell people it’s like learning how to swim by waving your arms in front of a mirror.

You’re not learning how to swim until you actually do it in the water.

“And that’s what we do at Prodigy Talent Training. We put students on a real set, in a real production scenario. Then we use those fully produced scenes as demos to send out to agents and casting directors.

Our students book paying gigs all the time. I’ve really thought this through, and it works. I’m not just somebody who owns a school for acting, modeling and production. I live it every day.

“They hear the owl and they start learning who they are and not end up thinking that they are a person,” Frampton said.

Last year, the hospital saw more than 5,200 patients, its biggest year ever. Fundraisers like the baby shower are crucial for the nonprofit, because the group doesn’t receive federal funding.

“We get no government funding, so [we rely on] grants, donations, memberships and sponsorships [to] pay the bills,” Frampton said.

Around 125 party guests had the opportunity to meet Owliver, Gonzo and Corey and discover the ways Florida Wildlife Hospital cares for Brevard’s injured and abandoned animals.

Partygoers brought gifts that included supplies for the babies and other animals.

“We have it in the spring, when we have a lot of babies, and just like a baby shower for people, it kind of shares the excitement of having the baby, but also helps the parents, to spare them some of the financial impact of having a new baby,” Frampton said. “We received lots of great items: paper towels, baby food, welding gloves, bungie cords, trash bags, dish gloves, gift cards.”

The group’s passionate volunteers are an integral part of the organization, and Frampton needs people to

assist with tasks that range from cleaning out cages to educational outreach.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old before they can work directly with the animals. They must pay their dues doing dishes and cleaning.

Bill Bjork is a seasoned volunteer who acted as Owliver’s handler during the event. Owliver is a great horned owl and he appeared at ease on Bjork’s arm.

Gonzo, an eastern screech owl, was Linda Archer’s partner for the day. Archer started volunteering at the hospital 14 years ago, after she brought an injured bird to the Wildlife Hospital.

According to Archer, she fell in love with the animals, what the group was doing for wildlife, and never left.

Karen Johnson spent the afternoon with Corey, a barn owl, as he posed for his fans. Johnson has been a volunteer for four years and is an important part of the educational outreach program, bringing the animal ambassadors to area schools and other events.

“Returning wildlife to their homes, that’s where they want to go,” Archer said.

“I’ve had the opportunity to release some and that’s all they want is the opportunity to go home, like any of us would.”

Winners announced for 2016 Charlie Corbeil Youth Art Contest

Brevard County students of all ages participated in the 2016 Charlie Corbeil Youth Art Contest in three categories.

Students painted or drew pictures of wildlife, photographed or wrote essays and poetry about animals and conservation.

Their compositions showed an understanding and appreciation for nature and the Viera Wetlands.

The categories were divided by grades. Third through sixth grade had the highest number of students who participated in the contest.

Four students have been selected to appear as guest columnists in Charlotte Corbeil’s column, “Charlotte’s Web.” Ella Barnes, won first place for her two-dimensional art, “The Frog at the Swamp,” in the kindergarten to second grade section. Lindsey

Mattessich’s “Collage” won first place in the same category for high schoolers.

Anna Mattessich’s photo of “The Heron” won her first place in photography for seventh and eighth grade students. In the third to sixth grade section, Reese Renfro’s poem “Describing the Viera Wetlands” garnered her the first place award and a place as Corbeil’s guest columnist.

JP Caglione wanted to leave his mark on the Viera High track team one last time before he graduated, and that’s just what he did.

Kaitlyn Jensen, Jamyson Boyd and Nick Bandos? They were pretty special, too.

In fact, all four Viera athletes earned medals at the Class 3A State Track and Field Championships held in Bradenton last month.

Caglione finished third in the shot put, while Boyd was fourth in both the long jump and the high jump. Jensen placed fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot. Bandos was seventh in the pole vault.

That’s six total medals for those of you counting at home.

was a great way to end it. The kids did a great job. I knew they were going to do that.

We had great practices. They were really focused.”

Caglione’s throw of 53 feet, 10 inches in the shot put broke the school record.

Ironically, had Viera been competing in Class 4A — like the previous two years — the senior would have won the state title.

Still, he was happy to get another school record before heading off to Charleston Southern University.

“I have my name on the board for discus (159-1½) and I wanted to put it on there one more time for shot put, because I always felt like that was my stronger event,” Caglione said. “I’m glad I got to leave something behind for kids to work up to. It was a good feeling, definitely. I walked away really satisfied

with how the day went.”

Boyd, also a senior, went 2211 in the long jump and 6-2 in the high jump to earn two medals and a place in Viera track history.

Bandos, meanwhile, cleared 14 feet in the pole vault, giving the senior a state track medal for the second year in a row.

Jensen, who medaled in both the shot and discus at last year’s state meet, did it again this year despite getting minimal practice time throughout the season because of her commitment to softball.

“The first couple of [discus] throws, I was a little nervous,” Jensen said. “But then I relaxed and I threw 121-[3] which was really close to my PR. Then in shot, I threw 39-2, which was really close to my [best].

“I wanted to throw some good throws, which I did. I’m really happy.” VV

The Holy Trinity football team is going to be put to the test in 2016.

Not only will the Tigers have a couple of tough district games against Melbourne Central Catholic and John Carroll, they will also face off against a quality local opponent and a pair of out-of-state champions.

After playing at Satellite in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 19, Holy Trinity will open its regular season with a Thursday night home contest Aug. 25 against St. Bernard’s of Eureka, Calif.

St. Bernard’s won the Class V-A state championship last season.

The Tigers will follow that matchup with another home game against Harvest and a road game at Coral Springs Christian before facing off with archrival Melbourne Central Catholic at Hustler Stadium on Sept. 16.

Last season, the Tigers beat MCC to clinch a spot in the FHSAA playoffs for the

first time since 2013.

Following that, Holy Trinity will again hit the road, this time all the way up to Savannah, Ga. to take on another defending state champion in Memorial Day. Returning home to face Trinity Christian on Sept.

30, the Tigers will then get a chance to win some local bragging rights with a game at Eau Gallie that is set for Oct. 7.

After an open week, the Tigers will get back to work at home against Bell Creek Academy before finishing up at John Carroll (Oct. 28) and home against Warner Christian.

Holy Trinity is coming off a season in which it went 8-4.

“In order to showcase the program and the players, it was vital to make a schedule that is attractive, respected, and gives exposure,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said.

“Kids will know that each year we will play an exciting schedule that they will be proud of.” VV

Playing a schedule full of heavy hitters helped prepare the Viera High football team for its run to the Class 7A state championship game last season.

Well, the Hawks will be playing those same teams again in 2016 with one exception.

A year after traveling to Allen, Texas to play in a $60 million stadium in Week 2, Viera has entered into a home-and-home agreement to play Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. The first game in the series will be played in Viera on Saturday, Sept. 3.

Gonzaga went 11-2 last year and won its second straight D.C. State Athletic Association Class AA championship.

Viera is coming off a season in which it went 10-5 overall and had its deepest playoff run in the program’s 10-year history. A number of players credited last year’s tougher schedule for helping them get ready for their incredibly successful postseason.

A year earlier, Viera went undefeated against a softer schedule, but then lost in the first round of the FHSAA playoffs.

“After the undefeated season, you know we didn’t get challenged too much,”

Viera coach Kevin Mays said. “You just learn through progression that you’ve got to challenge yourself during the regular season to have success in the postseason.

Everybody likes being 10-0, but it doesn’t necessarily help you.”

Viera will play at Eau Gallie in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 19 before opening the season Aug. 26 at Rockledge.

After hosting Gonzaga, Viera will visit Merritt Island on Sept. 9 and then return for three consecutive home games against Lakeland’s Kathleen, Cocoa (Sept. 23)

and Melbourne.

The Hawks will go to Palm Bay Oct. 7 before hosting a big district game against Martin County. Viera will close the regular season with road games at South Fork and Winter Springs (Nov. 4). VV

Holy Trinity sweeps hurdles, wins 5th straight 4x100 relay

Nothing sums up the kind of day the Holy Trinity girls track team had at last month’s Class 1A state meet in Bradenton like the 100-meter hurdles final.

Holy Trinity’s Giana Gayles finished first in 14.84 seconds, despite having to run into a strong wind.

Teammate Taya Britten was second in 15.52, and right behind her was another Tiger, Lizzie Bacon, who was third in 15.73.

Talk about a 1-2-3 sweep.

“That was perfect,” Gayles said. “It was a great day. We had Taya, who is a senior, and Lizzie, who is just starting out with the hurdles. We all came in the way we placed in the region. And they both got PRs, Taya and Lizzie, even with the really strong wind.

“They had awesome races.

It was a dream-come-true having the three of us up there [on the medal stand]. It was a lot of fun.”

The trio of Gayles, Britten and Bacon teamed up with senior Alisha Pound to do something else pretty amazing, too.

Holy Trinity’s 400-meter relay team (4x100) won the state championship for the fifth year in a row with a time of 48.54, a personal best for that lineup.

Gayles would also win gold in the long jump with a leap of 19-0 ¾, breaking her previous best of 17 feet, 10 inches.

In the 200-meter finals, the junior’s fourth event of the day and seventh of the weekend overall, she finished third.

triple jump and was part of the winning relay.

Bacon, meanwhile, medaled four times. In addition to her winning relay and third place in the hurdles, she finished fifth in the 300 hurdles and was part of the 1,600 relay team (4x400) relay team with Sydney Smith, Jaeda Stewart and Shelby Smith that finished sixth.

Sydney Smith, Mackenzie Wills, Samantha Folio and Shelby Smith finished second in the 3,200 relay (4x800).

Folio was fifth in the 1,600, Pound was seventh in the 100 and Paris Vergara was eighth in the discus.

That all led to a secondplace finish overall for Holy Trinity with 82 points, the most the school has ever scored at a state meet.

“I am exceptionally pleased with our girls’ overall performance,” coach Marc Bailey said. “It was the depth of our talent this year that made 2016 such a success for us at the state meet.” VV

Smith shot par 72 to surpass his age of 73. The low score was even more impressive since the course at the Viera East Golf Club was undergoing renovations on its greens.

At a recent meeting of the Space Coast League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities presented state Rep. Ritch Workman with a Legislative Appreciation Award.

Eat My Crust 5K bolsters Brevard charities with significant donations

During the past five years, Viera Pizza’s Eat My Crust 5K and family-friendly event donated more than $95,000 to Viera High School Athletics, Special Olympics of Brevard and Brevard’s Early Step program.

With more than 1,000 participants, the event was sold out the day before the race. According to race coordinator Mike Acosta, it is one of the most competitive races in Brevard County.

This year’s race finished at the Viera High School track where participants’ final laps were timed for the new Fast Track award in addition to the overall, age group, team and Pizza Delivery challenge awards.

In addition to donating $20,000 to Viera High School athletics, race finishers participated in the county’s largest pizza party and received medals. The grand prize was a golf cart donated

by GolfCarts Unlimited.

Acosta said the event is more than a race. “We’re touching the lives of infants along with student and special athletes with the monies raised from the race.”

Sergio the duck captivates students at Suntree Elementary

Sergio is a sixth-grade class member at Suntree Elementary School much like any other ― as far as he is concerned. Except that rather than adolescent braces and the trendiest gear, he has a beak and feathers.

Sergio is a duck.

His was the only egg out of 40 that teacher Jana Gabrielski’s class could get to hatch during a spring science project, which made him all the more important to them. With no other species

of his kind to imprint on, his classmates became more important to him as well.

For Sergio, the students are his fellow hatchlings and Gabrielski is their mom.

He’ll follow the group anywhere. One day filing out the door after students who were dismissed for orchestra practice, he had to be picked up and returned to his classroom enclosure wings beating. He so desperately did not want to be left behind.

Children from all over the school make a beeline for his outdoor enclosure to say hello whenever they can.

While roaming the classrooms, he wears a specially fitted diaper to prevent accidents. If any cleanup is needed, students in the classroom make up the Sergio Squad and see to this and all manner of his care and feeding. The experience inspired students to write an article published in the school district newspaper called Goose, Goose, Duck.

Student volunteers come to school early to fill his kiddie pool with fresh water and make him take a bath. They sit cross-legged in his low fenced enclosure reading books to him.

“He loves our company. He gets really lonely without us,” student Julia said.

Tommy is a favorite fellow fledgling, the pair frequently found in a soothing embrace, Sergio’s long neck draped across Tommy’s back, eyes drifting to a close.

A duck’s gender is not clearly discernible until it passes adolescence — exactly the current human age of Sergio’s student counterparts. If he is truly a male, he will grow a curly

While his sixth-grade peers graduate to middle school, and Sergio spends the summer in a foster home, it might just be “Sheila” who returns in Sergio’s place. VV

For Wendy Shelden, it’s a case of “love it or lose it.”

The science-focused teacher at Ralph Williams Elementary School hosted a field trip to the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands May 13 to teach all fourthgrade students at the school how to identify flora and fauna with guide books.

“I’m from California, way up in the mountains. Being outside and knowing nature was just a fact of my life growing up,” Shelden said.

“But now, with all the [perceived] dangers of the outside world and all the technology that is encouraging people to stay indoors, parents aren’t allowing their kids to go outside as much, and they definitely aren’t able to explore natural settings.

We’re losing touch with the natural world. If we don’t love something, we won’t take care of it and that scares me!”

Whether her students are gazing up at the stars and planets with telescopes and iPads on nights out, or wading in the Indian River Lagoon, organized field trips have gained the teacher a reputation that makes siblings look forward to being in her class.

“My older child had Mrs. Shelden and ever since, Dalton couldn’t wait to get her,” Linda Foster said of her son as she chaperoned the Viera Wetlands jaunt.

“She’s very hands on and gets them excited about what they can find in nature. She’ll be moving up to teach fifth grade and she’ll be taking her entire class with her, so you can imagine that Dalton is ecstatic.”

Like Dalton, many of Shelden’s students have ranked high on the science fair circuit and won many awards inside and outside the school district.

5, also winning the Northrup Grumman Green Award and its $50 cash prize. His experiments involved testing dissolved oxygen and other quality levels in the water inside the lagoon and outside the locks toward the ocean.

He also tested the areas near Sebastian, close to the inlet.

His conclusion was that the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard would benefit from regular flushing with ocean water.

“I’ve definitely become more interested in nature, but beyond that,” Dalton said, “the activities we take on make me feel like the things I do can make a difference, and that I am able to do things.”

Already this past year, Dalton’s class has produced informational presentations geared toward students’ homeowners associations to make them aware that the use of certain types of fertilizers can contribute to the brown tide that caused a massive fish kill, which fired up students to action on their return from spring break.

In the coming year, Shelden’s class will expound on their research at the Viera Wetlands and produce public service announcements for future students, instructing them on the use of field guides to learn more about, and thus love and care more for nature. VV

As the Democrats and Republicans continue to wage their battle into the November elections, students in The Academy for Communication, Art + Design at Viera High recently got their own up close and personal look at the political process.

Rather than having candidates deliver a 30-second speech in front of a bus before a field trip as in years past, this time, the academy elections featured debates, online polls, primaries, delegates and even different voting systems.

“As an academy, we want to do as much cross-curricular stuff as we can,” said Mark Cole, a Digital Media teacher at the school. “It just so happens that we’ve got elections happening and that seemed to be one that was something we could latch onto and do something kind of fun.”

The system, which used the concept of gamification, engaged students to immerse themselves in the election process and was designed

by Visual Design teacher David Peregrina and history teacher Keith Vincent.

go off a story where Mars has been colonized. There are seven colonies and at the beginning of the year, freshmen coming into the academy were put into a different colony. Once that was done, they came up with two different political parties — the Unionists and the Reformists —– complete with their own logos.

Students had to register for their party affiliation.

A website was created for the election process.

Candidates could post their platforms, students could watch the debates and online polls could be conducted.

Unsurprisingly, those polls proved to be influential in each candidate’s electoral strategy.

“As they were targeting specific groups throughout their campaigns, it was really mimicking how politicians target voting blocks in real life,” Vincent said.

After using the popular vote to decide the primaries, the rest of the election was done by using the single transferable voting system used in places like Australia.

“It’s really useful when you’re trying to elect more than one person in an election,” Vincent said.

“The students had to rank their choices. So if their

first vote didn’t get in, their vote counts for their second choice.”

Four winners were eventually chosen, along with four members of the Ambassadorial Senate, which has a representative from each class. The House of Representatives is made up of seniors from each colony.

“I definitely learned a lot more about the primaries and I definitely think it educated us much more about the whole political system so when we do become of age, [we’ll understand] how to vote,” Viera sophomore Sierra Connor said.

Student dedication to the process — from watching the debates to reading the students’ platforms and other information — impressed the teaching staff.

“When you look at this and go, ‘This is all the reading they had to do?’ Most students would go, ‘I’m not going to read that,’” Pergrina said. “But to watch students read through it — and it’s written by students, which is incredible.

“I think that really solidified for me that engagement is the key to education.” VV

Fans attending sporting events at Holy Trinity’s Catherine A. Ford Field will now have the ability to use recycling containers thanks to the school’s Environmental Club.

Seventh-grader Gabby Salyer re-started the club this past school year after seeing the conditions around the stadium.

“I used to do cross country and we would get here early in the morning and go down to the football field, and the garbage cans would always be knocked over and trash would be everywhere and animals would be in it,” Salyer said. “It was just bad.”

The club had 10 members this past year with students ranging from junior high to one graduating senior.

Zach Ippolito, a childhood friend of Salyer’s, was eager to join.

“I like the environment,” Ippolito said. “I don’t feel like seeing it trashed. I have a lot of animals in my backyard. I always see stuff out there — hawks, deer, armadillos, raccoons.”

In addition to having bake sales, the club raised money by selling Earth Day T-shirts with images — front and back — created by the school’s design class.

The group raised more than $1,100, enough to buy three bright blue recycling bins and with the Junior High student government agreeing to fund another one, there will now be four containers at Ford Field.

Score one for the environmentally conscious.

In addition to their recycling efforts, Environmental Club members helped repair oyster mats earlier in the year in conjunction with the Brevard Zoo and were scheduled to put some mats down in the Indian River

Guest speakers touched on environmental topics and specific marine life such as right whales, sea turtles and dolphins.

A number of Environmental Club students also took part in a project by the school’s Science Research class to build a new butterfly garden.

The next big project for the club will be to help the Florida Wildlife Hospital. Students already did some service work there, making toys filled with food for the injured raccoons, squirrels and birds.

There are plans to paint a mural next year to make the building more visible.

“Their fence is really rickety,” Salyer said.

“I want to get them a new fence next year, do more donations to them.

“They’ve given me a tour and it’s really cool inside. I think they help a lot of animals and they might need a little more help with that stuff.” VV

The popular Linear Park Trail at Brevard Zoo will be expanded for two and half miles to complete the project, which terminates to the south on Turtle Mound Road.

The $2.5 million project, funded from the Florida Department of Transportation, begins this year with design work and setting the exact route of the trail. Construction starting in 2017 is expected to take about six months to complete, said Jack Masson, Brevard County Parks and Recreation director.

The initial 10-foot wide, 1.1 mile segment, made of recycled plastic, winds through the wetlands and oak hammocks east of Interstate 95. The $3.2 million trail was built on land donated by the Duda family. The trail was paid for with parks bond money approved by voters in November 2000.

Construction began in 2012 after more than 10 years of discussion.

up the route that ultimately connects with the Pineda Causeway extension, that process, including a new source of funding, was something that had to be worked out, Masson said.

“I like that it’s an opportunity we have made to leverage the money to provide for an additional valuable recreation asset,’’ Masson said.

The county is going to request to extend the maintenance agreement with Brevard Zoo on the new segment, which entails keeping it clear of debris and regular inspections, he said.

The heaviest use of the existing trail is during the early mornings and evenings when it is not as hot, Masson said.

“We get very good usage early and late and we expect the same with the extension.

We expect the biggest increase to be in use as a bike trail because now it’s longer and goes through,’’ Masson said.

Student logs more than 500 volunteer hours

Zoha Irfan grew up watching her parents donate their time to help others.

So when it came to putting in community service time at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, she dived right in.

“I’ve loved it so much,” said Irfan, who recently graduated.

“My family’s always been super involved with service work.”

After forming the Interact Club — an offshoot of the Rotary Club — as a senior, Irfan was involved with projects that helped Humanity for Habitat, Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Those weren’t even part of the 500 volunteer hours she logged with the school this past year.

The 17-year-old Viera resident has volunteered in the emergency room at the Viera Hospital every Sunday since she was a sophomore.

“I was working up in the administration part of Viera Hospital, and then Sunday, I would go volunteer,” Irfan said. “It was really cool.

Through administration, I was dealing with patient satisfaction and how patients were reacting to different things. Then, I would go and actually implement those policies and what I’d picked up at meetings.

“I feel like I understood the system of the hospital more, and I came to like it more because it started to make

sense. I mean, it was a little baffling to see that it was so chaotic at first. I felt so inconsequential.”

Feeling reinvigorated by her internship experience, Irfan now trains others and shares her new perspective.

“It’s an emergency department room. These patients are freaking out,” she said. “The first person to take them back to the room, if that person’s not smiling, they’re going to continue to freak out.

“I realized, every person matters. We all have a voice, no matter how small you are, how small your job is, that first face is a big deal in an emergency situation. You can’t downplay something like that.”

Irfan will next attend the University of Florida to pursue a career in medicine.

Her father is a cardiologist.

“I spent a lot of my life thinking, ‘I’m going to be a cardiologist, too, just like my daddy,’” she said. “But we’ll see where the future takes us at this point. Right now, I’m on the path for Biomedical Engineering at UF.” VV

Suntree Rotary sponsors cleanup Suntree Rotary recently conducted a Park Clean Up at Rotary Park at Suntree, on the river at the end of Suntree Blvd.

Troop 224 Eagle Scout candidate Mitchell Shafer and his fellow Boy Scouts completed construction of a new, larger informational kiosk at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands on May 14. All materials were donated from Lowes and Home Depot.

“The main problem with the old kiosk is that it was to the left of the entrance,”

Shafer said. “With the popularity of this location, traffic now is routed to the right of the entrance, so you don’t see the information about the Viera Wetlands and all there is to see until you are leaving. This will fix that.”

A graduating Viera High School senior, Shafer was on the Viera Hawks football team and in JROTC. He will attend Eastern Florida State College and transfer to the University of Central Florida

The new Rotary Club of Viera, co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Suntree and Viera Voice will hold lunch meetings at noon in a location that will be announced in the July issue of Viera Voice.

Paul P. Harris, an attorney from Chicago, formed one of the world’s first service organizations in 1905.

Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

Rotary Club now has 1.2 million members from all walks of life. The members come together to create positive, lasting change in their communities and around the world.

The Rotary Club of Viera isn’t a new idea. A previous club had been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Indialantic, but was eventually dissolved.

Michael Pisacano, a spokesperson for the new Rotary Club of Viera said he and Ray Cornellius, who had been an active member of the former club,

recently discussed the many accomplishments of the previous club.

“We specifically target programs that would help children as they make the most difference over the long run,” Pisacano said in an email.

He said he expects the new club will adopt the same philosophy.

Past projects for the Rotary Club of Viera were The Children’s Hunger Project, Guardians Ad Litem and several projects at Viera High School.

The Rotary International Foundation has partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization to fund Polio Plus, a successful effort to wipe out polio worldwide.

Additionally, Rotary International provided shelter boxes to areas devastated by natural disasters and has an ongoing campaign to provide clean water everywhere.

The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron has been all about safety on the water since 1956. The nonprofit educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable teaches classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects.

The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron is part of District 23, which is comprised of 11 squadrons in the northeast part of Florida.

In March, the members of the local power squadron qualified eight of its members as certified vessel safety examiners. As a result, these certified inspectors will, at no charge, and confidentially, inspect any boater’s vessel, on land or on the water. They will use the same requirements as law enforcement agencies patrolling the Indian River Lagoon, and they will document any issues or shortcomings they find so the boaters can make the

necessary corrections. Their findings are not reported to authorities. The only people with the final inspection documentation will be the boaters themselves.

The inspector will keep a statistical record for summaries provided to the squadron.

Boaters whose vessels pass the inspection will receive a bright vessel inspection sticker, which will indicate to other boaters and law enforcement that the vessel has successfully passed an inspection. More importantly, these boat owners and pilots will know they can boat safely.

In May, the squadron conducted boater safety flare up practice. Flares can save lives and vessels when used correctly, but if used incorrectly, they can injure boaters and destroy vessels. Because the use of flares is prohibited except in emergency, boaters cannot practice their correct and safe usage. So the Banana River Sail and Power Squadron

offered sanctioned supervised instruction and hands-on practice with the types of flares required by law and used by boaters on the Indian River Lagoon at no cost to boaters.

In June, the Power Squadron is offering a junior safe boating class for children 11 to 17 years old. Students will learn the basics of boat handling, safety, navigation rules, government regulations and water sports. Attendance at the three-day course and passing the test is required to obtain the boating safety education ID card, required by Florida state law to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more.

The course runs from June 6 through June 8 and begins at 9 a.m. each day. Instruction will take place at Satellite Beach Recreation Center, 1089 S. Patrick Dr., Satellite Beach. The fee is $10 per student.

The Promise Walk is the signature awareness and fundraising event of the Brevardbased Preeclampsia Foundation to support its mission of saving the lives of mothers and their babies impacted by preeclampsia and related hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Girl Scouts of Citrus (Central Florida including Brevard) is seeking 2016 nominations of women who inspire and lead by their extraordinary contributions as visionaries, innovators and role models.

Two recent honorees are Betsy Farmer of Promise Brevard and Carol Craig of Craig Technologies.

The nominees will represent a diversity of professional fields, achievements and life experiences.

Women chosen for the awards will be recognized at an annual gala that directly benefits programs in the six Central Florida counties served by Girl Scouts of Citrus, including Riverpoint Camp, leadership training, STEM skills, MAH-KAW-WEE Camp and Tech on the Go. The Women of Distinction gala will be Saturday, Sept. 16 at Rosen Shingle Creek.

Two Suntree teachers boost appreciation of art through unique project

Don’t be surprised in the future if some students from Suntree Elementary School, who just finished fifth grade, visit the Louvre or some of the other great museums around the world.

While teachers around the United States lament the fact that art programs often don’t survive the annual budget cut, two teachers from Suntree Elementary have found a way to introduce the arts to their unsuspecting young students.

Pam Bruce and Christy Fleig have used their Masterpiece Museum of Art to introduce their students to the art work of Dali, Michaelangelo, da Vinci, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Seurat and Picasso. The program has successfully met the requirements of the Standard Base Literacy Project.

Students were assigned an artist, who somewhat resembled their personality.

“The children then serve as museum docents,’’ said Bruce, who has taught at the school for the past 20 years and created the Masterpiece Museum of Art project 17 years ago. “They really work on their reading, writing, listening and speaking. Several of the students just absolutely loved the project.’’

As a docent, the students were required to learn all they could about their artist. After the research, they shared their knowledge through their oral reports. Besides the standard biographical information, the docents also described the techniques of the artists and their styles of painting.

“They not only became experts on their artists, but they learned about all the other artists through the class experience,’’ Bruce said. “We had one student from Ireland who picked Paul Henry, an artist from Ireland.’’

Bruce praises her teamwork with Fleig, who has taught at the school for the past 11 years, for improving the project each school year.

“I feel like this has been spearheaded by a book I read years ago,’’ Bruce said.

“It talked about how the children don’t have a background in art. This was a good opportunity to bring art into the discussions in the classroom.

I’m definitely not an expert.

Belle is a good-natured and sweet fawncolored terrier mix who needs a wonderful forever home.

She can lovingly be described as 8-yearsyoung because her activity level matches that of a much younger dog. Belle is a social butterfly and at a recent adoption event made pals with members of the Brevard County Fire Department, gave some sweet and sloppy kisses to event volunteers and happily greeted children who stopped by to give her some love.

This sweetheart steals the hearts of everyone she meets. For now, she patiently awaits that special day when she will go to her new home.

The past month, Belle has lived at the South Animal Care Center in Melbourne, and the shelter volunteers sing her praises.

This lovable girl has also made some great furry four-legged pals, and was brought to the shelter with her best buddy Buford. Belle grew up with Buford, an adorable 3-year-old male brindle mix. Buford is dog-selective at the shelter, but he sure loves his girl Belle.

Belle and Buford are housed near each other at the shelter and serve as a calming presence for one another. Fans of the duo tried to adopt them out together as a pair.

Unfortunately, this task proved difficult because of Buford’s dislike of other dogs and since most families aren’t looking to adopt two dogs.

Belle now continues her road to adoption solo and would make a fantastic addition to any family. Her sweet disposition is perfect

SENIORNews Brevard Genealogical Society hosts summer workshops

The Brevard Genealogical Society will host summer workshops at the Central Brevard Library, located at 308 Forrest Ave. in Cocoa. All workshops begin at 9:30 a.m.

All workshops are free.

The first workshop, Family Search, takes place Monday, June 13. A panel from the Family History Center in Rockledge will lead the discussion about their family search website, its features and what the Family History Center has to offer.

John Whitney and Dorrie Dykstra will lead the “Brickwalls” workshop Monday, July 11. Attendees will pre-submit requests and discover special techniques at the workshop. In order to participate, attendees must join online at:

Anyone interested in genealogy is welcome to the society’s Beginning Genealogy Class coming up in July. This four-week course will start Thursday, July 7.

USO Central Florida welcomes volunteers

New and prospective United Service Organizations (USO) volunteers and members of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) recently convened at the Indian River Colony Club in Viera.

Out of the approximately 50 attendees for both the MOAA meeting and for the USO presentation, many were elderly men who had served their country, some in numerous conflicts.

Robert Watts, 65, a USO volunteer and MOAA member, was in the Navy for 32 years, from Vietnam through Iraq and Afghanistan.

Watts said, “All of our members, a lot of us here, even though we are out of the service, we want to continue to serve. We want to make sure our military folks are being taken care of.”

As I found out, technology can even get us closer to nature. Yes, there is an app for that!

In fact, many applications will help you learn about the natural world. For example: Leafsnap uses visual recognition to help you identify leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds and bark; MyNature Animal Tracks helps you match a set of

tracks to a species; iBird and Merlin Bird ID App help recognize birds; Butterfly Collection has information on more than 200 species of butterflies and moths; and Audubon Ultimate Nature Guide Series includes field guides into everything about a state or geographical region. Others like Oh, Ranger! In the end, technology has its good and bad. It’s up to us to find the balance and use it wisely. As simply put by professor Greenfield, “society needs to put technology ‘back in its place.’”
