YMCA still plans to build state-of-the-art facility in Viera BY CHRIS BONANNO

In 2015, the YMCA of Central Florida announced plans to build a sprawling YMCA Family Center off Murrell Road across the street from the Viera High School football stadium. Roughly three years later, the project has yet to break ground. Still, according to a statement sent to the Viera Voice on behalf of the YMCA of Central Florida, the proposed facility is

something they’d still like to make a reality. “The YMCA of Central Florida remains committed to bringing a YMCA to Viera. We are continuing to work with our community partners to raise the funds needed to bring our vision to life and we will share additional updates as our plans take shape.” The land near the planned project was donated by The Viera Company and they too remain bullish on the project. “We do continue to support

Local schools brighten campuses for Aug. 10 opening BY CHRIS BONANNO

It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school is less than a month away with students officially heading back to class Aug. 10. And when students and staff head back to VieraSuntree elementary schools, they’re likely to notice some changes ranging from subtle to substantial. Manatee Elementary has had new surveillance cameras installed, according to Principal Shannon Daly. That’s just the latest addition to security measures that were noticeable at the end of the 2017-2018 school year, Daly noted. “We were able to finalize our security door project during May so all of our families at Manatee have experienced our new security doors,” Daly said. “…. Our security doors are locked during student hours.” Quest Elementary will have some new measures in place as it relates to the pickup and drop-off of students, Principal Christine Boyd said. Students and parents will notice marked cones and a new PA system

wind as they drive through the parking lot so “you can accommodate more at the parking lot instead of having them in the street” in an effort to reduce congestion, Boyd said. At Suntree Elementary, students there can expect to notice a change to their

lunch atmosphere, as the school’s cafeteria will have been painted a “lovely shade of blue,” according to Carrie Kachur, the school secretary. Kachur added that security gates will be up at the school

All other registered GOP voters in Viera-Suntree can vote in the District 52 state representative race featuring incumbent Thad Altman against Matt Nye. Democrat Seeta Durjan Begui awaits the winner. Registered Republicans that live in the northern portion of Viera also will be able to vote in a primary contest for the District 5 Canaveral Port Authority seat as Robyn Hattaway faces off with Malcolm “Mac” McLouth. The winner will oppose Democrat Maurice Boudreau in November. Republicans will get to vote in the state senatorial primary featuring Gov. Rick Scott against Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente. The winner will square off against Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson in the fall. The primary race to fill Scott’s gubernatorial spot is crowded with seven candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties attempting to earn their respective party’s nominations. The Democratic primary will feature Andrew Gillum, Gwen Graham, Jeff Greene, Chris King, Philip Levine, Alex “Lundy” Lundmark and John Wetherbee. Republicans will choose from one of seven candidates, including Don Baldauf, Ron DeSantis, Timothy Devine, Bob Langford, John Joseph Mercadante, Bruce Nathan, Adam Putnam and Bob White. Democratic voters will decide between Sean Shaw and Ryan Torrens as their attorney general nominee, while GOP voters will choose either Ashley Moody or Frank White. Republicans have four nominees for the position of Commissioner of Agriculture, including Matt Caldwell, Denise Grimsley, Mike McCalister and Baxter Troutman. Democratic voters will select one of a trio of candidates to be their nominee as Nicole “Nikki” Fried, Jeffrey Duane Porter and Roy David Walker all try to advance to the general election. Early voting for the primaries will be held from Aug. 18 to 25. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 28. Sister Joan Grace looks forward to her diamond jubilee BY CHRIS BONANNO

A longtime local chaplain and teacher is celebrating her diamond jubilee, or 60th anniversary, of service as a Roman Catholic nun. Sister Joan Grace, 81, currently works as a chaplain with Rockledge Regional Medical Center and Melbourne Regional Medical Center. The longtime nun couldn’t be happier as the anniversary is celebrated. “It’s really awesome — 60 years of commitment to service to the Lord is really wonderful,” Grace said. “I must say it’s all because of the grace of God.” The community will celebrate her

diamond Jubilee at the 11 a.m. mass on Sunday, Aug. 12 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera. As a chaplain, she said she has learned how to handle good and bad news. “It’s wonderful to be with people so dedicated, the doctors and nurses,” Grace said. “…. It’s wonderful to see their dedication and their joy in their work. I just enjoy meeting them during the day.” According to a release from Steward Family Hospitals, Grace was born Juliette Anne Grace in 1937 in Ireland. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame and from Stetson University. At Stetson, she took graduate courses in counseling and guidance. In 1986, she

also earned her master’s degree in religious studies from Loyola University. That strong educational background undoubtedly served Grace well in her lengthy career as a teacher. She worked as an educator for 45 years, 42 of those years at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge. “My favorite memories are seeing the children from year-to-year achieve, especially when they go on to high school and become wonderful citizens,” Grace said. She also added that a lot has changed since she came to St. Mary’s in 1962. VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Steward “Watching the whole area grow, it’s Health Care really exhilarating,” she added. Women’s Baseball World Cup opens Aug. 22 at USSSA complex BY CARL KOTALA

The countdown clock is running. And it won’t be long now. The USSSA Space Coast Complex will host the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup Aug. 22 to 31, marking the first time the sport’s biggest world-wide tournament has been held in the United States. “I think there’s definitely excitement and realization that it’s close,” said Jami Lobpries, vice-president of marketing for the USSSA. “The local community has been amazing. Everyone from all four chambers (of commerce) in the county, the Office of Tourism, the Viera Company, The Avenue Viera and (Brevard County) School Board, they’ve all been incredibly supportive. “They’ve really been helping drive awareness, helping drive volunteers, (getting) feedback from the community. We’ve had some local companies step up and donate meals for the teams. That’s pretty cool.” The 12-team field includes Japan, the fivetime defending champion and No. 1-ranked team in the world, along with No. 2 Canada and the thirdranked United States team. In fact, the U.S. will highlight the opening night of the tournament, playing unranked Puerto Rico at 7 p.m. Through an agreement worked out between the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and USSSA, all 50 games of the Women’s Baseball World Cup will be broadcast internationally to places such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Lobpries said the USSSA was finalizing a domestic partner, but that it would most likely be ESPN Plus. The 2016 tournament, which was held in Gijang, Korea in 2016,

had a broadcast reach of approximately 100 million households and generated an online viewership from 198 different countries and territories, according to a WBWC news release. As part of the kickoff to generate interest in the tournament, the World Cup Trophy Tour kicked off May 30 in Rockford, Ill., home of the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. In addition to making stops at five Major League Baseball stadiums, there will be a local tour for the trophy beginning Aug. 1 at the USSSA Space Coast Complex with the Wednesday Friendsday hosted by the Cocoa Chamber of Commerce. It also will appear at a breakfast hosted by the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce on Aug. 2 before heading to Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Rays on Aug. 3. The trophy also can be seen Aug. 16 at the Thirsty Third Thursdays event at The Avenue Viera. Those events all lead up to what will be a showcase event for women’s baseball, a chance to see the best players in the world in action in what should be a highly competitive World Cup. The United States will be in Group A along with No. 5 Venezuela, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 7 Korea, No. 8 Netherlands and unranked Puerto Rico, which is making its first appearance since 2010. Group B is stacked with Japan, Canada, No. 4 Australia, No. 9 Cuba, No. 10 Hong Kong and unranked Dominican Republic, which is making its World Cup debut. Viera Hawks Travel Baseball to add four more teams

BY CARL KOTALA

Youth baseball in the VieraSuntree area just got more interesting. Viera Hawks Travel Baseball, Inc. (VHTB) has announced it will expand its travel baseball program to provide more opportunities for players throughout the area. The organization has added 9U, 10U, 12U and 15U travel baseball teams to its already existing 13U program. Founded in 2012 by Travis Mack and Damien McDermott, the VHTB promotes itself as an organization that focuses on player development, baseball fundamentals while “fostering a competitive, fun and positive environment” according to a news release. The expansion will allow the VHTB to provide an opportunity for youth baseball players in the Viera-Suntree community

Members of the Viera Hawks 12U Travel Baseball team placed in the elite eight at this year's prestigious tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y. The organization announced that it is adding more teams this fall. to “continue to learn and develop at the next level beyond Little League.” In addition to having experienced team managers and a veteran coaching staff, Dave Mastrolonardo — a former major league pitcher and the pitching coach for the Viera High baseball team

member, said in the release. “Expanding the organization provides a natural progression to prepare young players to eventually compete at the high school level.” Viera Hawks teams will participate in tournaments throughout Florida starting this fall. The 12U team also

will consider attending the prestigious Cooperstown Dreams Park and American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 2019. Stay hydrated to post good scores BY DAVID D. HORST

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate is one of the keys to surviving the summer heat and staying focused, especially on the final four or five holes when heat exhaustion can begin to take effect. Drinking water, at least on every other hole during a round, can’t be overemphasized. At Viera East Golf Course, the Viera East Men’s Golf Association has been blessed with lots of sunshine and a golf course that is in exceptionally good condition. Just ask Fred Bogle. On June 7, he posted a holein-one on No. 16. This was his 11th hole-in-one. He recorded his 10th hole-inone just two days earlier. On June 21, VEMA members played a new game called Devil Ball. Each fourman team had to use one player’s score and then the low score from the rest of the team. The game turned out to be a lot of fun, creating camaraderie among team members. Bob Urban, Ben Herrman, David Horst and Gary Baxter teamed up to win the event. Steve Wing, Craig Smith, Dick May and Richard Blakney, a blind add on, placed second. Guy Sullivan, Andy Mammay, Ed Raleigh and David Hill finished third. Allen Satcher on No. 4, Tom Campbell on No. 7, Mammay on No. 13 and

Fred Bogle posted his 11th career hole-in-one on June 7 at Viera East Golf Course.

Peter Maloney on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin. On June 28, VEMA used the Stableford scoring system with four-man teams that counted the two best balls. It was the kind of cultural exchange that very few kids get to experience … and it was all brought about by the game of soccer. One month after Space Coast United coach Taylor Pitts brought a group of players to visit the Næsby Boldklub team in Odense, Denmark, the trip was reciprocated when the Danish players made a trip to Florida. It all culminated with a game between the Space Coast United U16 girls travel team against the team from Denmark, which took place July 16 at Holy Trinity. Though Næsby Boldklub won the game 1-0, the whole

experience of bringing the two sides together was far more important than the outcome. “It’s brilliant,” Danish coach Rene Lindharth said. “We played a really good game today against a very good team. … Of course, what’s most important is all the friendships you’re having here and creating. “They’re here to learn, to get friendships and to develop. Actually, I didn’t care if we were winning or losing. Most important thing was for learning and developing.” Pitts, who had visited friends in Denmark several times previously, brought 18

Atkins is Viera football’s undiscovered gem BY CARL KOTALA

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High's Sean Atkins, shown here during spring practice, caught 13 touchdown passes last year. He's known for not only running good routes, but also being hard to bring down. "I like to incorporate a lot of shiftiness," he said. "It's just fun to embarrass people."

Sean Atkins slanted across the middle and caught a pass. After being tackled, a player from Gonzaga Prep said … well, what just about every opposing defensive back says to the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Viera High wide receiver. “Get up softy. You’re too small. Don’t come (across the middle) again.” By the end of the night, Atkins walked off the field in Washington D.C., having caught 10 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a 4-yard TD. Oh yeah, and he went over the middle again. A number of times, in fact. “Everyone overlooks me, I think, just because of my height, but I’m a dawg just like everyone else,” Atkins said after a spring practice in May. “I’m going to go out there and I’m going to show you I’m better than you. … It’s fun.”

— Derek Smith Earlier this spring, Viera head coach Derek Smith said one of his goals on offense for this season was pretty simple: Get Sean Atkins the ball. “He’s just an electrifying athlete,” Smith said. “His lateral quickness and his ability to stop and start — without losing any momentum or speed — is unbelievable. “He reminds me of Jimmy Chitwood from (the movie) “Hoosiers” — just an AllAmerican athlete, an AllAmerican boy.” Atkins, now a senior, has an appreciation for receivers like New England’s Julian Edelman and San Francisco’s Trent Taylor — players who have made a name for themselves despite not having a lot of size. During the summer, Atkins was timed at 4.60 in the 40yard dash. A few weeks later, he’d already dropped his time to 4.56. And while he does hold

offers from Army, Jacksonville University, Florida Tech and Central Connecticut State, the general consensus around Viera is that Atkins is one of a number of Hawks getting overlooked in the world of college football recruiting. “Absolutely, I think he’s underappreciated, underrecruited,” Smith said after Atkins scored a receiving and a rushing touchdown in Viera’s victory against Orlando Jones in this year’s spring game. “I think he’s one of the best players in the country, let alone the state of Florida. He proved that tonight. “He’s proved it every game he’s ever played.” Atkins has spent his summer attending football camps and trying to open a few eyes. And with a new, improving quarterback in sophomore Bryce Norton and a talented group of receivers that also includes seniors Shamaar Moore, Jordan Emmons and Cortez Reid, plus youngsters Caleb Osburn, Karsten Poole and Jeremiah Housey, Atkins believes the Hawks have a chance for another big season. “Our potential is huge,” Atkins said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we make it to states this year. Bryce is going to grow, and our defense is stacked. Our defense is very good. When our offense goes up against them every day, it’s going to make us better.” VV

Brevard Zoo continues to help animals around the world BY JULIE STURGEON

One of the Brevard Zoo’s many success stories is the recent birth of a beautiful baby male giraffe named Sprinkle. The calf, the 11th born at the zoo and the fifth produced by 16-year-old mom Milenna, is a member of the threatened Masai giraffe subspecies. The species has declined due to habitat loss, poaching and other perils in its African homeland. By partnering with the Giraffe Conservation Fund, the zoo helps the organization with giraffe research and protection. Protection of the imperiled giraffe is just one of many conservation projects the zoo participates in. A dedicated conservation department also works to restore oyster populations, translocate vulnerable Florida scrub jays and breed the endangered Perdido Key beach mouse. “The Perdido Key beach mouse is essential to the integrity of its coastal ecosystem,” Zoo Marketing and Communications Director Andrea Hill said. “The Brevard Zoo has developed a breeding program to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse captive population.” The zoo also works with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to translocate scrub jays and manage protected scrub habitats.

VIERA VOICE Courtesy of the Brevard Zoo Perdido Key beach mice disperse seeds inside sand dunes.

“With scrub jays and other endangered species, agencies will call us because of our husbandry,” Hill said. “We know that we have to move the entire family — not just one bird.” Annual passes are an ideal way for locals to take advantage of the zoo’s setting and watch animals during peak viewing times. In addition to sustaining the zoo and animals, $5 of each membership supports Brevard Zoo's conservation efforts. What is your favorite conservation project? For a chance to vote, just visit the zoo. Upon entry to the zoo, each guest is given a token representing 25 cents. Guests can select their favorite project or organization at the Quarters for Conservation station. Three projects are featured at a time, with 12 local and global projects a year. Hill credits the large number of zoo volunteers for their contributions to

conservation projects, in addition to a dedicated conservation department. “As a community zoo, we encourage public involvement in all aspects of our operations,” Hill said. “We are dependent upon and very grateful to our volunteers.” Hundreds of zoo volunteers, both adults and teens, contribute as many as 70,000 hours of work per year. Built with the help of thousands of volunteers and spanning 75 acres, the

not-for-profit Brevard Zoo is home to more than 900 animals. There is always something new happening at the zoo. So the next time you visit Australia and Beyond or Expedition Africa at the zoo, say hello to Rafiki, a proud giraffe father, feed baby Sprinkle or chat with the

Students speak to board members about plight of homeless BY JULIE STURGEON

Viera teens Julie Adams and Deegan Tarrillo each delivered passionate speeches to the Brevard Board of County Commissioners in July on the plight of the low-income and homeless population in Brevard. In an attempt to persuade commissioners to reconsider the depletion of funds to the CCA (Community Action Agency), the Viera and Rockledge High students doubled up, speaking a total of 10 minutes to board members. The CCA was established to help poor, unemployed, disabled and senior citizens pay for rent, utilities and food. It is an income-based program. “Last year, the commissioners cut Community Action Agency’s budget in half, taking away $184,942 to pave a tiny section of road,” Tarrillo said. “That cut was stopped at the last moment, but it is scheduled to automatically happen at the start of this budget year.” Although the Brevard

County Commissioners voted in favor of cutting $184,942 in assistance to the CCA, there was short-term reversal due to Hurricane Irma. County Commissioners have spoken in favor of restricting certain types of nonprofit organizations eligible for taxpayer-funded grants. “I believe we have a fundamental ethical and moral responsibility to help those around us … to those most vulnerable in our community,” Adams said. The mission statement of the CCA is, in part, to reduce the causes of poverty by empowering persons to become self-sufficient through case management, life management training and short term financial assistance. “Our neighbors and friends will still cost the county money if you leave them homeless,” Adams said. Adams cited a study that homelessness can end up costing taxpayers as much as $30,000 to $50,000 per year. The students emphasized that the CCA program helps keep the lights on in

One of the area’s best after-school programs is not just expanding, it also will be holding a grand opening festival and fundraiser this month to show off everything it has to offer. CraftingEducation, a STEM non-profit charitable education Academy, is still located at 3270 Suntree Blvd. But it’s new office space has allowed it to triple in size to 1,500 square feet in Suite 1130B. The grand opening festival will take place Sept. 21 and 22. The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at the academy’s location. There will be food trucks and vendors in the parking lot, and visitors will get a chance to see the new office space. Palm Bay Ford also will have a shuttle bus on display both days that the CraftingEducation Academy is hoping to purchase with the help of donations made at the fundraiser. The festival will shift to the Viera Rec Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. There will be food trucks, bounce houses, face painting and a number of carnival-like games related to Minecraft and Roblox. New schools still needed for Viera-Suntree BY CHRIS BONANNO

When will Viera-Suntree area residents see the construction of new public elementary and middle schools? As part of a five-year plan set forth from Brevard County Public Schools in February 2017, a new elementary school, built on a site southwest of Quest Elementary, would be slated to open for the 2021-2022 school year, according to Brevard County School District 4 representative Matt Susin. “The reason that 2021 makes sense is because that is at which the capacity of the elementary school will be justified with the student capacity to build it,” Susin said. The need to do something with respect to capacity management is clear when looking at projected capacities for area elementary schools. For the 2017-2018 school year, Quest served 1,000 students, Manatee 914 and Suntree 686. From a percentage standpoint, Quest and Manatee operated at 96 percent capacity while Suntree operated at 91 percent. Manatee and Suntree are projected to maintain capacities exceeding 90 percent for the next five years, while Quest’s capacity is forecast to skyrocket with 117 percent capacity by 20192020 and 126 percent by 2022-2023. “Quest is growing so fast that it’s not sustainable without building another elementary school,” Susin said. “ … There has to be a new elementary school built.” Susin adds that the

One of the fastest growing schools in Brevard County is Quest Elementary School in Viera. elementary school will cost $22 million to build, all of which will come from impact fees, which he says can only be used for new construction. Plans remain in place for the school to become a reality, though a recent recommendation from a staff member with Brevard County Public Schools at a July 10 workshop leaves open the possibility that plans could change. The presence of Pinecrest Charter Academy in Viera, which projects to open for the 2019-2020 school year, could alter those plans. “We think it’s important to kind of see where the charter school effect shakes out in our enrollment,” said Susan Hann, the director of planning and project managements with Brevard Public Schools at the workshop. When contacted by the Viera Voice, District 3 board representative Tina Descovich agreed with the notion that the recommendation made the

Viera student discusses process that led him to choose Notre Dame BY CARL KOTALA

John Sayut will be heading to Notre Dame this month to begin the next chapter in his education. How the Viera High School graduate got there is a tale that began before his freshman year, when he took his first college tour, and included a poster board of pros and cons between his final two choices. But ultimately, it came down to where John Sayut felt most at home. And when you’re a high school student thinking about what colleges you want to go to, figuring out where you will be most comfortable should clearly be among the deciding factors. Sayut did his research. He went on the College Board and U.S. News & World Report websites, along with Niche.

com, to not only get a feel for where the schools ranked, but also what the surrounding neighborhoods were like and the different kinds of reviews each institution received. “I ended up applying to about a dozen schools or so, Sayut said. “A lot of them I really liked. I probably went on 10, 15 college tours. In addition to Carnegie Mellon University — his first college tour going into his freshman year — Sayut visited schools such as Penn, Columbia, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Florida, UCF, Case-Western Reserve and the University of Chicago. Sayut, who plans to major in mechanical engineering with an eye on eventually becoming a designer of prosthetics, not only applied to schools he thought he could get into, but also those he

urgency for elementary capacity in Viera. However, there’s still obviously a need for elementary capacity,” Ziegler said. “In my opinion, we should not sit back and do nothing, just because there might be a charter school.” The new elementary school in Viera projects to have an opening enrollment of 424 students, taking 214 from Longleaf Elementary, 82 from Suntree, 69 from Quest and 59 from Sherwood, BPS says. It also will have 970 student stations. In either event, it’s clear that continued growth in the area will force BPS to consider a host of capacity management options, which includes evaluating existing space for classroom conversion, portables, classroom additions, boundary changes and moving sixth grade back to middle school. Everyone at Kennedy Middle School will notice new paint in the commons area and in classrooms according to school secretary Rita Patient. The painting was done by volunteers that consisted of current students and their parents, former students who now attend high school and teachers. “It’s bright and cheery,” Patient said. Patient added the school’s cafeteria is being remodeled and that some older portables at KMS have been replaced by newer ones. VV

could solve these issues. The school would come with a $35 million price tag that is also derived from impact fees, Susin said, and it would be open sometime between the start of the 2022 and 2024 school years. Susin is a particularly strong proponent of building the school and is urging residents who also want the school to be built to speak out. “We’ll first have a discussion and then we’ll probably set direction on the 14th of August and in order to do that, we need to have two other board members, at least three to set the direction for that. … We’re not there yet, we need those two votes. Hann also recommended the board send out a request for proposals for a new prototype design for a new elementary school with new security framework. In addition, Hann recommended adding portables to Quest in August 2019, considering boundary changes for underdeveloped areas and that the BPS capacity plan be updated early next year. Perhaps as pressing a need, if not more so, is the need for the construction of a new middle school in the area. Much as it was at the elementary school level, there are capacity issues creeping up quickly at both Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge and DeLaura Middle School in Satellite Beach. These are the two schools where Viera-Suntree students predominantly attend middle school. A would-be middle school that would be located adjacent to Viera High School

Study of space becomes easier with ShareSpace's donation BY CHRIS BONANNO

Brevard Public Schools was the beneficiary of an out-ofthis world donation July 19. BPS was the recipient of a package donation from Buzz Aldrin’s ShareSpace Foundation that consisted of a glossy 25-foot by 25-foot map of Mars, 10 “Welcome to Mars” books, a Vex IQ robot (controlled remotely) and a curriculum package that will go to each of Brevard’s 56 elementary schools, according to Jim Christensen, who serves as executive director of the foundation. “Every kid that is in school today will have the opportunity if they study, if they work to actually participate in humans being on Mars permanently and you put those things together and those are really incredible opportunities,” said Andrew Aldrin, Buzz’s son and president of the foundation. Christensen adds that the foundation values each package at $5,000 each. p o o c BUSINESSS Nicole Maree Bridal will host fashion show at The Avenue Viera BY WENDY SCHEURING

While white and ivory will always be the traditional choice of colors for bridal gowns, mocha and blush undertones also have become more popular. Yvonne Raley, the co-owner of Nicole Maree Bridal at The Avenue Viera, has seen the trend, especially among millennials. Raley has a variety of wedding gown choices at her bridal boutique. There’s classic styles, vintage, bohemian and, along with them, sequins and crystals. “I love glamour,’’ Raley said. “I’ve always been drawn to shiny things.’’ Raley makes note of her newest wedding dress adorned with a cape. “Use the train for your wedding and, afterwards for your reception, you can take it off,” Raley said. The bridal shop also offers tuxedo rentals, hair

accessories and custom veils. Raley and her husband, Joe Raley, purchased the former L.A. Bridal on Feb. 1. After renovating their suite, including painting the wooden floors white, Nicole Maree Bridal was ready to open its doors to upcoming brides and their families. The couple named their business using the middle names of their two daughters. Yvonne Raley wanted the shop to be an inviting environment, with spacious areas for relaxing and enjoying the experience. A typical bridal party, including siblings and family members, will have plenty of room. “Our team likes to make people comfortable, giving them the time and attention they need,” Yvonne Raley explained. And, with so many dresses to choose from, making the right choice can become overwhelming.

“We find silhouettes that help you find your shape,’’ Raley said. “That’s what’s nice about having experienced staff.” At 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9, Nicole Maree Bridal will host “A Walk in the Park Fashion Show” in The Avenue Viera’s newly renovated Central Park. The show will have a runway and a disc jockey. Joe and Yvonne’s 18-year-old daughter, who models many of the Nicole Maree Bridal styles, also will be on the runway. There also will be a bridal show from 2 to 5 p.m. It will feature local wedding vendors such as bakers, florists and wedding planners. Hawks conduct school supply drive BY CHRIS BONANNO

Prior to what they hope will be another in a streak of successful seasons on the field, Viera High School’s football community took a little bit of time off of it to give back to those in need. VHS players and coaches, in conjunction with the Viera Hawks Quarterback Club, gathered July 22 at Buffalo Wild Wings in Viera to hold a school supply drive. “With a new coach (Derek Smith) comes some new ideas and one of those ideas was to start giving back to the community a little more,” Hawks Quarterback Club president Garrett Lamp said. “The Viera Hawks program has been very blessed by the Viera community and the outlying areas. We wanted to make sure that we give back to them to kind of show our appreciation for what they’ve done for us.” Donated items filled three large containers. “We’re trying to collect as

many school supplies as we can to give to the Brevard Schools Foundation,” Smith said. “From that point forward, Brevard Schools Foundation gives it to the free- and reduced-lunch kids of Brevard County in the elementary schools and the middle schools that are in need of school supplies.” Those who donated received a coupon from Buffalo Wild Wings. Seniors from the team worked the event. “It’s going to be good to give back to our community,” said Jordy Emmons, who plays wide receiver and tight end for the Hawks. “It’s something we take pride in at Viera. They support us and we give back to the community for such a great cause.” “We’ve had a lot of positive responses,” added kicker/ punter Robbie Murtha. “Everyone’s motivating us to keep pursuing great things like this and to keep giving back to our community.” V V

New Fairfield Inn & Suites feels quite at home in Viera BY ANGELA MILKIE

A stunning addition to the Viera Town Center, the brand new Fairfield Inn & Suites across from The Avenue Viera, boasts a modern and relaxing atmosphere for guests, with convenience to dining and shopping. Since opening its doors May 30, it has been been sold out nearly every night. According to Jennifer Vasu, the sales manager at The Fairfield Inn & Suites, the new hotel “is one of the top performing newly opened hotels within Marriott. We hope to keep this positive trend moving forward.” Its success can be attributed to its exceptional guest services and amenities, such as a poolside bar open to the community, as well as a large fitness center that boasts both cardiovascular equipment and free weights. Guests have been particularly excited about the complimentary breakfast serving mini-waffles, and the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo & Conditioner available in all rooms — not to mention the appeal of the visually dynamic space. Offering 90 rooms, 26

New GM of The Avenue Viera ready for challenges, changes BY ERNEST ARICO

Since its opening 14 years ago, The Avenue Viera has become the top destination to shop in Brevard County and the region. Kevin Cedik wants to keep that tradition going and make The Avenue even better. “It’s all about making sure that the guests coming here have a good experience, whether they're visiting a restaurant, an entertainment venue or a retailer,” Cedik said. “We want to make sure that when they come out here we want to give them an opportunity to come again.” Cedik is a professional management executive with more than 21 years of experience in property management, financial management, corporate security, and operations and personnel management within the shopping center and entertainment industry. He was named The Avenue’s new general manager earlier this month. Prior to joining The Avenue, Cedik was general manager of The Liberty Center near Cincinnati, Ohio, which is owned by Steiner + Associates. He also was director of special events for the Easter Seals Center of Louisville, Ky. and director of security for the Richard E. Jacobs Group.

VIERA VOICE Jill Blue

Kevin Cedik is the new general manager of The Avenue Viera.

Cedik has a master’s degree in business administration from Franklin University and a bachelor’s of science degree in political science and criminal justice from the University of Akron. Cedik said he took the job because it was a real good opportunity to take The Avenue to the next level and where it needs to grow to continue to be successful. “The Avenue is a community-based center,” he said. ”The Avenue is very big on the Viera area and the people who live here, but it’s also trying to be the destination for the region. The biggest challenge for

The Avenue is keeping up with Viera’s growth. If the demographics change, we have to change with it.” Cedik said some of the changes he would like to see at The Avenue include additional dining options and entertainment venues. “I would like to create a good mix of retail, dining and entertainment options that will drive traffic and families to The Avenue. I think we have a pretty good customer-base now but with more families moving into the area, we want to attract more families to come here.” Cedik said some of the changes coming to The Avenue include some redevelopment plans, a new look in the Central Park area, the new pop fountain in front of the AMC Theater, four, five new tenants in the next six months and improvements to some upcoming events. “We are always re-evaluating everything, from events to tenant mix to what we do with the property,” he said. “We are always trying to attract tenants or looking at advertising and marketing opportunities. All of those are on-going things,” he said. Despite recent statistical data that have shown how online shopping has had a dramatic impact on retailers around the world, Cedik said

there is still a need for brickand-mortar stores because many retailers are changing the way they do business. “They’re changing the way they’re doing retail,” he said.

“It’s all about the experience and the guests coming in have to have a good experience coming into those retail shops. That’s what we are doing at The Avenue.” VV

There were 13 boys from the 04 team (in club soccer teams are named after the date of birth of the players) and five girls from the 02 girls team. They got a tour of Copenhagen after arriving, then spent the rest of the trip in Odense, where they stayed with host families. Pitts said they discovered there is no air conditioning, it doesn’t stay dark for very long and that they had to either ride a bike or walk to the club for training every day. The SCU players even got to attend a day of school with the Næsby Boldklub kids. “It was a big culture shock,” Pitts said. “But they had a blast, an absolute blast.” When the Næsby Boldklub players arrived in Florida, they too stayed with host families in the Viera area. In between taking part in a camp in Port St. John, they went to Universal Studios, shopped at an outlet mall, went to the beach, paddle

The preseason game against Space Coast United was organized in just a few weeks, but again, it was a success for all as the game was competitive and enjoyable. “It was cool playing against a team that, No. 1, isn’t from here,” SCU player Piper McHenry said. “And there

Representatives from the Viera Lions Club and Family Promise of Brevard stand next to goods that will be donated to those in need. Chiffone Sandberg, left, a Viera Lions Club member and volunteer with Family Promise of Brevard; Carl Sandberg, a member of the Viera Lions Club; Lynda Jackson, the secretary of the Viera Lions Club; Larry Jackson, president of the Viera Lions Club; and Tara Pagliarini, executive director of Family Promise of Brevard, worked hard in the joint effort to help the community.

Lions donation to buy supplies BY CHRIS BONANNO

Family Promise of Brevard and the Viera Lions Club recently teamed up to help those in need in the community with the former donating $500 to the latter to buy badly-needed supplies. The supplies included hygiene products, socks and underwear for all ages, food, school supplies and umbrellas. Getting supplies to those who need them in Brevard is just a part of what the Rockledge-based Family Promise of Brevard does, said Executive Director Tara Pagliarini, with donations going to those who “aren’t able to meet their everyday basic needs.” “Our mission at Family Promise is to end family homelessness by collaborating with the community to provide families the support and resources they need to put themselves back on a track towards long-term housing stability, and so while they’re with us, we try to connect the community to help meet their emergency needs for food and shelter and for items like lunchboxes, backpacks, deodorant, just everyday needs that they may not have but would help them on their path as they work to get back into housing,” Pagliarini said.

TDD #(800)545-1833 Ext. 359 1200 S Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL 32952

Pagliarini spoke at a recent meeting of the Viera Lions Club, and according to Viera Lions Club president Larry Jackson, hearing Pagliarini’s message about her organization helped spur on the donations. “She indicated that they help people who are homeless and we wanted to participate with them, but we felt they knew better than we did so we donated $500,” Jackson said. This donation seemingly fits right in the wheelhouse of what the Lions Club is hoping to do in terms of giving back and representatives with both organizations are excited about what has been and what they hope will be accomplished. “We will be providing funds on an ongoing basis because one of the things we’re looking to do at Viera Lions Club is to give back to the local community,” Jackson added. “…. This is a very direct way to get things back into the community and that’s very important to us, so we’re fundraising all during the year and we’ll be making more donations.” Those interested in more information and/ or contributing to the cause should go to familypromiseofbrevard. org. “I’m totally thrilled that this is something that might happen,” said Kayla Spellman of Viera, who is a mother of four and a community advocate that runs a Facebook page dedicated to the would-be Viera Middle School. “…. For the last, easily the last decade, this is something that was wanted in our community and needed in our community and there was no chance that this was happening.” John Burnham, who served during the 2017-2018 school year as head of the parentteacher organization at the school, said the proposed middle school is something he’s been waiting on for a long time since he moved here with his infant son more than a decade ago.

“We moved in knowing he’d go to Manatee and there was always talk “there’d be a middle school by that time,” Burnham said. “… And now 12 years later, there’s no middle school yet.” Ziegler favors the idea of a new Viera middle school to solve elementary capacity issues as well through being a venue that houses sixthseventh- and eighth-grade students. “Our seventh and eighth graders from the Suntree and the Viera area are mostly going to DeLaura up beachside. I think they would prefer to go to a new middle school in Viera,” Ziegler said. “So we pull all of them back into the new middle school and now we’ve got a thriving middle school in the Viera area. We’ve solved all of our Viera problems right there.” That, Ziegler said, would precipitate Hoover and DeLaura also taking on sixth graders which he said would “lead us to be on our way to changing our model to be consistent with the state model with sixth grade and middle school.” Currently, Brevard is only one of three school districts in the state that does not have sixth grade with seventh and eighth grade in middle schools. “I think we definitely need to look at an option for middle years,” Belford added. “Whether that is a middle school or a junior/senior or a K-8.” V V

Chateau Madeleine moves closer to eventual opening BY CHRIS BONANNO

The Chateau Madeleine, located off Wickham Road in Suntree’s Medical City plaza, will be a three-story senior living and memory care assistance facility when it’s completed late this year. The facility, according to Chateau Madeleine director of sales and marketing Yvette Jenkin, will feature 56 apartments dedicated to independent and assisted living along with 33 memory care studios. It will be what Jenkin refers to as a “senior resort community” that comes with cooking, housekeeping, laundry and transportation services along with providing what Jenkin says is a “robust calendar of activities, outings.” Ronald Aylward, executive director of Chateau Madeleine, added that the facility would employ “about 70 people” as well. The project has been in the works for a few years, organizers say. But tragic and unforeseen events along the way were responsible for the facility’s name. “About three years ago, we were discussing the fact that there’s a need for more

assisted living facilities in the area or adult communities in the area,” said Abe Hardoon, owner of Chateau Madeleine and founder of Suntree Internal Medicine. “We were

thinking of Brevard Medical City as an addition to Suntree Internal Medicine, which is an internal medicine practice and we started planning and planting the seeds of forming

such an undertaking. Along the way, my mom passed away and we decided to name the project after her.” On July 14, administration and staff with the facility

sought to introduce themselves as part of a meet and greet held at Suntree Internal Medicine, also at Medical City. “The meet and greet gives us an opportunity to be able to meet the community, meet the Suntree community, say hello,” Aylward said. “People know who I am, know who some of the key members of our staff are and to really understand the marriage and partnership with Suntree Internal Medicine.” But people who stopped in for the event were able to meet more than just humans as Hunter, a 3-yearold rusty golden retriever, also was on hand. Hunter, who was matched with his owner Aylward when he was 7 weeks old, is a trained diabetic alert dog. He also is a companionship dog for those with post-traumatic stress disorder. “He doesn’t bark. He doesn’t growl. People are just amazed,” Aylward said. “He will be actually also helping our residents and visiting residents that welcome pets,” Jenkin added. “He can detect the highs and lows and sugars.” VV

NEST continued from page 7 far-ranging visibility that such trees offer. Dead trees, or snags, can continue to provide structural support for nests. “Mega canopy trees tend to be bald eagles’ favorite,” said Kirkpatrick, “because they have really good vantage points of their territory.” Because these large trees might protrude out more than the surrounding trees, they also can be susceptible to lightning strikes. Currently, the reason for the tree’s demise is unknown.

The biggest concern for the eagles would be if the nest drops out of the tree when hatchlings are in it, according to Kirkpatrick. In Florida, bald eagle egg laying can occur anytime from October to April. Female bald eagles usually lay two eggs, and both parents incubate the eggs for about 35 days. “As long as the nest is present, it will forever be protected,” Kirkpatrick said. Bald eagles are safeguarded under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Eagles continue to face threats each year, including encroaching development. Nearby construction of the new interchange in Viera must be outside a 330feet buffer from the bald eagle’s nest per Florida Wildlife Commission regulations. Furthermore, construction activity closer than 660 feet to the nest is limited to outside the nesting season. Kirkpatrick encouraged interested citizens to monitor the nest at a safe distance and report activity. Interested citizens should watch for signs of the eagles laying eggs and hatchlings

during the nesting season, if able to do so at a safe distance. With the Florida Department of Transportation construction, that might be difficult.

“As long as the nest is present, it will forever be protected.” — Ulgonda Kirkpatrick

“It’s always good to give the birds plenty of room,” Kirkpatrick cautioned, “and not put yourself in harm’s way.” Through the Audubon EagleWatchers citizen science program, members collect data on nesting eagles in Florida, including nest locations and possible disturbances to nesting activities. Citizens can contact the FWC office of law enforcement if they see anything of concern. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission monitors known eagle nests in Florida by conducting aerial surveys every three years. The next survey in Brevard County will be in 2019. For information, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife at 888-404-3922 or the Audubon EagleWatchers citizen science at fl.audubon.org/get-involved/ audubon-eaglewatch. V V

SUNTREENews Sharing Center boutique, donation center opens its doors

BY WENDY SCHEURING

The Sharing Center of Central Brevard has made its way to Suntree. Its newest facility, an upscale boutique and donation center, is located in the Boardwalk Plaza at 7720 N. Wickham Road, Suite 103. “The Sharing Center is about the generosity of others,” President/CEO David Brubaker said. “This year, we are celebrating our 40th year as a nonprofit, communitybased organization. With the growth of the SuntreeViera area, we wanted to provide an opportunity for the residents to participate. There is an opportunity for everyone to learn about our mission and to support us through volunteering and donations. “The emphasis of this location is also to know the struggles of the many people within Brevard County that come to us every day. We

are the only one in central Brevard that has a consistent feeding site.” Brubaker said. “We feed 150 to 200 people daily. We fed more than 15,000 people requesting emergency food, and we distributed more than 500,000 pounds of food last year.” “We also provide financial assistance with rent, mortgage and utility payments. When it gets below 45 degrees, we convert our kitchen at the Cocoa location into a cold night shelter.” The nonprofit’s brochure states that less than 6 percent served are homeless, and that 40 percent are children. The center seeks donations of clothing, household goods, furniture and non-perishable food, with the exception of outdated electronic equipment. The Suntree location also is looking for volunteers to

help sort items, go through clothing and research the value of donations before putting them on shelves. Part of the Sharing Center’s outreach also includes establishing partnerships with area businesses. “My goal is to see what businesses are around, and to get to know them and let them know we are here,” said Heather Richards, a vice president of resource development. “I’m looking forward to seeing how we can grow.” For the past year, establishing this center has been a grass-roots effort. “I set it up from the ground down,” said store manager Jo Batchelor. I built the dressing rooms, stained the doors myself, hung the mirrors. Macy’s donated all of the racks and all of the pictures and the mannequins in the front window. “Our neighbor said from the outside it looks like a dress

shop.” To obtain food or emergency services (only at the Cocoa location at 113 Aurora St.), proof of residence in central Brevard and a Social Security card is required. “Our client assistance program includes emergency food, a health and hygiene kit, clothing, household goods, beddings, furniture and shoes,” Brubaker said. The Suntree boutique hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 321-426-3334. To arrange for a pickup of donations, call the main office at 321-631-0306. The Suntree grand opening, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, will take place through the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce later this month.
