Hurricanes bring fun waves to the Space Coast

BY R. NORMAN MOODY Sometimes hurricanes bring a little fun.

“There’s no better feeling than seeing that beautiful hurricane spinning off the coast, out of harm's way, and pumping swell right into our coast like a machine," said Viera resident and surfer Mike Persichetti.

"Hurricane season is the best season when you're a surfer. No matter how old I get , I always feel like a little kid on Christmas morning when a fun swell is on the way. Fresh wax , new boards to try, warm water, and pumping swell. What more could you ask for?”

While local surfers spend most of the summer waiting for the return of swells

that come during cooler weather, tropical storms in the Atlantic sometimes find them riding the waves.

For almost a month, near the September peak of hurricane season, many tropical storms have delivered some rideable waves.

Though at times the surf was too choppy, the parade of tropical storms has kept waves coming, inconsistently but on a fairly regular basis for several weeks. V V

If you’re a parent, you know raising a child can be very challenging, a full-time job.

But for the parents of a child who works in the entertainment industry, it can be a daunting task, almost like working two or three full-time jobs.

For Lee Nessel, and her husband, Brandon Helton of Viera, taking care of their 7½-year-old daughter Ella Grace Helton, a vivacious, funny and perky child actress, has been an exciting and rewarding experience.

For now, Ella is concentrating on her school work (Nessel is home-schooling her), her six training sessions a week to help her career and bicycling around the neighborhood with her parents.

“We try to do a lot of things together as a family,” Nessel said.

Real Men Wear Pink to raise money, awareness of breast cancer

BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER Men are subject to contracting breast cancer.

So, the Real Men Wear movement has tapped into the power of pink, raising more than $6.5 million to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives from breast cancer, says the ACS. “Five years ago during Breast Cancer Awareness, someone came up to me and asked me about participating in the Real Men Wear Pink ACS fundraiser,” said Curt Smith, a Brevard County Commissioner and chair of the Real Men Wear Pink fundraiser for Brevard County. “I think they reached out to me and asked me because my mother and eldest sister both succumbed to breast cancer and I had a high school buddy who died from breast cancer. I have been doing the fundraiser ever since.”

Smith has raised several thousand dollars each year for the event.

“In fact, currently we are third in the nation raising funds with our group for the ACS,” Smith said. “Tropical Smoothie gives proceeds from some drinks as a

fundraising arrangement.

Some volunteers do things at restaurants or tend bar for the tips. Most just reach out.”

Smith urges support of $5 to $500 as it all adds up. Because of COVID-19, fundraisers are not being held in the usual places and the strides walks are not being held so that cuts into the possible funds raised.

So, volunteers are working harder.

“I will match any $500 gifts,” Smith added. “There is a team of volunteers. One guy teams up with a company that makes pink T-shirts printed with breast cancerrelated slogans. Then, 100 percent of the proceeds go to Real Men Wear Pink. Also, corporate sponsors usually give $1,000 to $5,000.”

Drive-Thru Expo a hit in Viera, more to come

BY CHRIS BONANNO The excitement started building long before the exhibitors were ready to start the inaugural Senior Life Drive-Thru Senior Expo held at The Avenue Viera.

At 8 a.m. Sept. 4, the vehicles started rolling and several hundred patrons received COVID-19 supply kits and lots of other senior-related giveaways and information. All the giveaways were dropped into a big red bag that each motorist received at the inaugural Senior Life DriveThru Senior Expo.

Vehicles began lining the area near the AMC Movie Theater complex just after 7 a.m. and a steady stream drove through from 8 to 10 a.m. The vehicles stopped at each of the 18 tent stations, where the occupants were greeted and given senior resource information and lots of giveaways from participating vendors and organizations.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibitors wore masks and practiced CDC-recommended social distancing guidelines.

Attendees were asked to remain in their vehicles.

Some asked that the giveaways and information brochures and flyers be placed in the trunk of their cars or on the back seat.

Even with all the precautions, the mood was festive and upbeat.

Tigers expecting ‘most productive season’ in school history

There was a time when just making the state playoffs would have been reason for excitement around the Holy Trinity football program.

But as coach Nate Hooks Jr. pointed out recently, “the bar has been raised.”

The Tigers, who made the regional semifinals for the first time in program history two years ago — and reached the second round again last season — are aiming higher in 2020.

“I think it will be the most productive season in the history of the school,” Hooks said. “Anything less

than the regional final is unacceptable.”

Despite having just 20 players on the roster, the Tigers have plenty of reasons for believing a deep playoff run is possible.

Senior wide receiver and Georgia Tech commit James BlackStrain is back after missing all of last season with an injury. Linebacker/ slot receiver Carlos Estronza also is healthy again.

With Wydner at quarterback, the Tigers are expected to have Jadon Gowins at running back and a wide receiving group that includes BlackStrain, Estronza, Farmer and Ja’Lon Hudgins. Senior Rico Frazier leads a line that will include Reynolds, Peppers and Layden Brunger along with Campbell McNab, Rod Thomas and Mick McCarthy.

Defensively, the Tigers plan to line up with Frazier, Peppers and Brunger up front, Estronza, McNab and Ronald Brown at linebacker and a secondary that includes Hudgins, Jonathan Bailey, Bowden, Farmer and Gowins.

“The talent level this season surpasses our team last season and it’s a different feel with the team,” BlackStrain wrote in a Twitter message. “We have a pretty solid QB and I have a great feeling he will lead us this season.”

Ja'Lon Hudgins is just one of the reasons why the Holy Trinity Tigers are loaded at the skill positions this season.

BlackStrain is one of three Tigers who has been named an ESPN 300 recruit in recent years. In fact, since Hooks arrived in 2014, Holy Trinity players have garnered more than 180 college scholarship offers despite having such a small roster.

“We take pride in having Harvard, Yale, Duke, Penn State, Clemson, Illinois and many more Power 5

colleges in my office saying they had never been to — or recruited — Brevard County until coming to Holy Trinity,” Hooks said.

“Their next question would be, ‘are there any other schools I should check out in this area?’

Holy Trinity seniors focus on winning eighth consecutive district title

BY CARL KOTALA The Holy Trinity volleyball team might be lacking in returners from last season, but the Tigers certainly aren’t short on talent or motivation.

Seniors Olivia Yochim, Mackenzie Sands and Taylor Mullen — along with sophomore Sophia Panarese — are all that’s left from last year’s team which won a seventh consecutive district championship en route to another appearance in the state tournament.

This year’s group wants to make that eight straight district championships.

“All of us are super motivated,” Yochim said just prior to the season starting. “We really want to push during practice, push through all the games leading up to it so we can go ahead and win the eighth district title.

“We’re going to talk to the younger players about it and motivate them to want to go and get it like the seniors before us did.”

The Tigers certainly got off to a good start, winning their first three matches behind the play of their returners, along

with newcomers such as sophomore Bella Rogers, junior Sydney Britto, freshman Maya Collins, sophomore Kareena Mathews, freshman Dailya Wydner and eighth grader Isabelle Clark. Other newcomers include Brianna Wakefield and AK Harmon.

Suntree Country Club honorary member wins first U.S. Open Women’s Doubles title

Sands was asked what it was about the newcomers that impressed her the most.

“I think they’re talented, honestly,” Sands replied.

“Maya Collins is really good in the back row and she’s a really young ninth grader.

Dailya is also very good, so I think their overall talent is impressive.”

The trick, Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski said, is to get the new players acclimated to how the Tigers do things on varsity.

“It’s a big leap for the other eight to understand how we practice, the expectations at practice and why we care about certain things like 100 percent effort, 100 percent of the time,” Klonowski said. “It takes a little bit of time for that to take hold, but we’re gaining on it.”

Because the start of the fall season was pushed back

because of the coronavirus pandemic, Klonowski believes his team will get better as the season goes along.

“It will get better with more game experience,” Klonowski said. “But we’re serving the ball well. We’re passing the ball well. That will pay off for sure in the long run.”

And if the Tigers can win another district title, their seniors will have upheld what has become a Holy Trinity tradition.

“We lost a lot of seniors last year, and since we’re graduating this year, it’s really important to continue that legacy,” Mullen said.

“Watching all the older girls when we were younger, we kind of looked up to them.

I feel like we need to pass down that same legacy and continue it for years to come.” V V

Pro tennis player and Viera resident Laura Siegemund won her first U.S. Open Women’s Doubles championship with firsttime partner Vera Zvonareva on Sept. 11 in New York.

As Suntree Country Club members cheered them on at a poolside watch party, the unseeded duo defeated No. 3 seeds Nicole Melichar of the United States and Xu Yifan of China 6-4, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to claim the 2020 Grand Slam title.

“Now that it’s settled in a little bit, I’m very proud about it,” Siegemund, 32, said in a recent video conference with one of her coaches, doubles specialist Paul Davis, who is also the Head Tennis Professional at Suntree Country Club. “I think we played a great tournament.

It’s a great achievement that no one can take from you anymore. We played excellent doubles. We beat great pairs.

It was not like it was given to us or we were lucky. We just outplayed different opponents, some of the best in the world.”

A native of Fielderstadt, Germany, who recently moved to Viera, Siegemund, 32, currently is on tour but plans to train at Suntree Country Club during the offseason later this year.

I can't say how proud I am of Laura and our team.”

In 2016, Siegemund won the U.S. Open mixed doubles title with partner Mate Pavic, who also won the 2020 U.S. Open men's doubles title on Sept. 10. In all, she has won two singles and six doubles titles on the Women’s Tennis Association tour, and 12 singles and 20 doubles titles on the International Tennis Federation circuit.

Suntree Country Club members watched the women’s doubles final at the club’s newly expanded pool bar, which served the U.S. Open’s official drink, Honey Deuce Cocktail.

After Siegemund’s victory, the country club erected a sign near its tennis courts that reads Congratulations To Our Member Laura Siegemund 2020 U.S. Open Women’s Doubles Champion.”

“I think it’s so awesome that the people are following it and they’re watching it and coming together to watch it,” Siegemund said of fans in her second home. “It makes me very proud. That’s one of the big reasons why I play tennis because I want to inspire people. I want to make people watch tennis and be excited and have someone who kind of pulls them into the sport.

Babilonia sets pace for Viera High School cross country

BY CARL KOTALA Imagine becoming perhaps the greatest athlete at your school in a sport … you kind of fell into.

That’s exactly the case for Viera High School cross country runner Isabella Babilonia.

As a freshman, she knew she wanted to compete in a sport, she just wasn’t sure which one. She was too short for basketball or volleyball.

So, she decided to run since she had enjoyed it in middle school.

Well, look at the senior now. Babilonia owns the school record in the 5K (18 minutes, 13 seconds) and her times in the 3,200 meters (11:27) and the 1,600 meters (5:16) are the fastest run by a Viera High student, according to cross country coach Scott Baker.

In August, after winning her third consecutive race for her club team, the East Florida Track Club, she was voted the MileSplit National Girls Performer of the Week.

“I did not think I would ever get to this point,”

Babilonia said. “I was honestly just doing it for the sake of trying to have something to do in high school, just to say I did it … have a high school sport.

“But obviously, coming back after a good track season sophomore year, I was like, ‘OK, I could probably do this. I could probably run in college.’ I’m very grateful that I decided to go and try to get the good times to run.”

Babilonia plans to keep running in college. She’s currently looking at UCF, UNF, USF and Florida Southern — where she will keep setting goals and keep chasing them down.

Because that’s exactly what she’s done at Viera.

“There are people that aren’t comfortable changing levels,” Baker said. “They get to a level (where) they’re a pretty good runner and they get comfortable with that.

They never want to be at that next level — in any sport.

“She’s changed levels so many times. That’s not easy to do. A lot of people can’t do that. They can’t get beyond what they think they’re

capable of doing. With her, she’s exceeded her own expectations so many times that when I give her a new goal, she’s like, ‘OK. I don’t know how I’m going to do it,

but if it wasn’t possible, we wouldn’t have it as a goal.’

“She’s taken that approach and each time she reaches those goals. Those are talents people don’t see. She has them.”

In fact, Baker said Babilonia has redefined the way he looks at athletes.

“This is my 34th year of coaching. I thought I knew what talent was and I thought I knew what it looked like … and I was wrong, particularly when it comes to this sport,” he said.

“She’s not big (5-foot2). She’s not strong. … She doesn’t come from a pedigree of runners in the family. She didn’t start really young and wasn’t a child phenom. She doesn’t check any of the socalled boxes of talent.

“But what I’ve learned is there are other talents that are as important, or more important. She possesses all of them. She’s the most disciplined, dedicated, the hardest worker, has an extremely high pain tolerance, driven … every adjective you can use to describe a successful athlete,

she has. I’ve never seen anything like it. She’s a 10 out of 10 in every category that I now describe as talent.”

Babilonia, who said she likes the feeling of accomplishment after reaching one of her goals, has set a few more for this season.

“My goal is to hopefully go under 18:10,” she said. “That’s my first goal. Honestly, if I could find a situation where I could break 18 minutes, that would be really awesome.

“I could see myself doing that in a scenario where the weather was good and the competition was also good.”

Babilonia should win her third district title this year, and competition will definitely pick up when Viera reaches the regional and state meets next month. After finishing 17th in the state last year while recovering from an early-season injury, she’s hoping to finish higher, perhaps in the top five.

Wherever Babilonia chooses to go, Baker has no doubt she’ll be a success.

“I think her future is going to be great,” he said. V V

receiving positions will be Caleb Osburn, Cohen Graham-Johnson, James Goffigan, Sedaros and Jake Woodruff.

The offensive line is big and experienced with Cooper Liston and Justin Humphreys at the tackles, Brady Touzet and Jake Koons at guard and Tyler Matas at center. Tommy Arevalos and Kyle Bortz will also be in the mix.

Jared Perdomo will handle the kicking duties.

Defensively, the Hawks will be strong and dangerous up front. Tyler Cooley, Nate Acevedo, Connor Nelson and Cameron Wright will be the ends while the combination of Jackson Hatfield and Jamari Lyons will be tough to handle in the middle.

Austin Smith leads a linebacking group that also includes Aiden Ferrer, Johnny Eaton and Andreas Foreman.

And in the secondary, it will be Sedaros, Connor Yancey, Nolan Helton, Bryce Reynolds and A.J. Floyd.

“A lot of people in the county believe our team won’t be any good and that is fine,” Sedaros wrote.

“It really does not matter.

All that matters is that we believe in ourselves and we fight together as a team every single week.” V V

Talented offensive, defensive lines give Hawks chance to go far

After a long offseason that was made even longer by the coronavirus pandemic, Viera High School senior Zak Sedaros was happy to put on his Hawk uniform again.

“Just putting my helmet on gave me the most joy I have felt in a while,” Sedaros said in a Twitter message.

“I’ve truly loved the game of football ever since I was a kid. There is nothing else like it.”

this year’s team, the Hawks opened their season on Sept.

25 at home against Bayside.

Viera is scheduled to play at Heritage on Oct. 2 before returning home to face Palm Bay the following week as part of what will be just a seven-game regular season schedule.

“We’ve had players step up that we didn’t know could be players for us and the chemistry of the team is spot on right now,” Smith said.

Junior C.J. Simms, who made several starts for Viera last season, will step into the full-time starting role.

Preston Foreman and Aidan Davis have never played running back before, but both have excellent speed and as Smith said, “they are working very hard to prove they can be quality tailbacks in this county.”

Hawks believe they're primed for big season

BY CARL KOTALA With an improved defense and two young standouts up front, the Viera High School volleyball team believes it has a chance to have a big season.

“I’m really excited about the things we’re going to be able to do this year,” Hawks coach Sarah Wayne said.

A big reason for Viera’s optimism comes from the return of junior libero Hannah Bradford, who missed most of last season with a back injury. Bradford’s ability to come up with a lot of digs — she had 24 in an early-season match against Merritt Island — will give the Hawks a big defensive presence.

Freshman setter Mallory Merz joins her sister, junior Kelly Merz, to help with the passing game and the Hawks have a lot of talent up and down the roster with seniors Lauren Lewis, Savannah Reiser, Devin Fox, Allie Ham and Kennedy Boswell.

Angie Durso is part of the junior class that includes Bradford, Kelly Merz and Hanna Carpenter. Viera’s sophomores are Hailey Hubbard, Mak Carter and Sydney Williams.

The duo of Carter and Williams, both coming off solid freshman seasons, are a big reason why the Hawks are so optimistic about this season.

“I think we’re super strong on the defensive aspect as well as hitting,” said Reiser, who was due to miss at least two weeks with an ankle injury.

“We have Mak and Sydney in the front row. With them together blocking, I think we can go a long way with this team.”

Not only was the start of the season delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but under Brevard Public Schools guidelines, the Hawks will play a countyonly schedule before entering district play.

With only 11 regular-

season games, the Hawks will have to make some adjustments. But Wayne, like many coaches in the same position, wasn’t complaining.

She’s just happy there is a season to be played.

“I’ll take what I can get,” she said. “It just means we’re going to have to do everything we can in practice to make up for the number of games that we’ve lost. Our schedule was cut in half and our season time was cut in half, so the time that we have in practice, we’re just going to have to make the most of it and go hard and scrimmage against each other really hard.”

The Hawks, who were off to a 2-1 start, are ready to put in the work that it will take for them to have a big year.

“I think we’re a lot closer as a team,” Lewis said. “I think we bond really well together, so I think that shows off on the court. I think we’re ready to push for the rest of the season.” V V

Suntree Country Club will break ground on new $7.5 million clubhouse

BY CARL KOTALA It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Suntree Country Club.

Golf membership is nearing capacity, the tennis courts have been renovated ‌ and now comes the big one: Ground will be broken next month on a new clubhouse that will also, by design, create changes to what is now the ninth hole green on the Classic Course.

Construction on the $7.5 million project to build the new venue at the private course is expected to take a year to complete. “We think it’s a really good thing for the community,�

Suntree Country Club General Manager Steve Lamontagne said. “We want to have a nice country club, updated and modern. I think it’s a big deal for all of us.�

The new clubhouse, which will measure just under 14,000 square feet, will be located just behind where the pro shop currently stands. It will have an outdoor veranda that will overlook new putting greens and the 18th hole. In addition to seating in the main clubhouse, there will be two banquet rooms for functions and private dinners hosted by members, a bar, men’s and women’s locker rooms and, of course, a new pro shop.

But that’s not all Suntree golfers will be getting.

The facility will encroach on what is now the ninth green, moving it closer to the water’s edge where it will be protected by a Florida capstone wall that will guard the green for a short approach shot on the par-5 hole, which is expected to be shortened by 45 yards.

“As much as I would like to say the clubhouse is exciting everybody, what I’m hearing from the golfers is, ‘Wow, we’re going to get a beautiful ninth-hole green,’�

Lamontagne said.

Changes to the green, along with furnishings and fixtures for the new clubhouse, are included in the $7.5 million price tag.

The project was approved by members in a late-June vote.

Suntree’s existing clubhouse will not be torn down. Instead, it will eventually be repurposed as a youth fitness center.

The existing pool area will also remain in place.

Navy destroyer USS Delbert D. Black commissioned at Port Canaveral

BY CHRIS BONANNO The U.S. Navy commissioned the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Delbert D. Black (DDG 119) in a ceremony Sept. 26 at Port Canaveral.

The ship will call Mayport, near Jacksonville, its home.

It will join other ships, including the USS Lassen, USS The Sullivans, USS Farragut, USS Thomas Hudner and USS Paul Ignatius homeported there.

The commissioning is believed to be just the thirdsuch event at the Port of a Navy vessel, according to Steven Linden, the director of communications and public affairs for the Canaveral Port Authority. The USS Porter was commissioned in March 1999 and the USS Mason in April 2003 at the port.

Linden said the Port played a role in last year’s commissioning of the USS Indiana, which took place at the Navy facility at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

“It’s absolutely unique,” said McKenna of the ceremony. “It only happens once in the lifetime of the ship. This crew has worked extremely hard to get to this point.”

McKenna noted that the ship is more then 500 feet long and more then 71 feet wide. As many as 300 sailors will be on board.

“It’s not just something that takes on surface threats,” Master Chief Petty

Officer of the Navy Russell Smith said. “It’s got a role in air defense, it’s got a role in submarine screen and keeping bad things underneath the sea away from us.”

Smith also noted that the ship has been designed with the comfort of those on board in mind.

“The process of ship building has really taken into account what sailor needs are and the rack space, the innovation of their design,

lights and plugs and things so that, you know, for modern electronics our young men and women can’t live without. They’ve got a way to manage those so the creature comforts on board, you know, even the galley and the mess decks, it’s light years beyond the ships that I’ve been on 32 years ago,” Smith said.

The ship is named after Black, who served as the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, according to the Navy’s website. Black

was assigned to the USS Maryland based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and helped to defend and recover ships that were too damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

While serving as Master Chief Petty Officer, Black established the Senior Enlisted Advisor Position, which eventually became known as Command Master Chief. Black also served at sea for 21 years on eight different ships. He passed away March 5, 2000. V V

Breeding added that she was pleased by the conservation efforts that have been made relative to bald eagles.

“Bald eagles are one of our great conservation success stories,” Breeding said in the e-mail. “They were near the brink of extinction in the early 1970s, but made an amazing recovery after laws were

put in place to protect them (including banning the pesticide DDT). Even today, it’s heartening to see everyone working together and taking the right steps to protect bald eagles and their nests (and other wildlife) in Florida. It really does take all of us keeping an eye out for them and reporting any concerns to FWC, the authority for enforcing the laws that protect bald eagles.” V V

Despite area development, eagles' nest in Viera perseveres

You might not realize it, but an eagle’s nest has been thriving just off the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 95 from Viera Boulevard.

The nest is visible from Viera Boulevard but even more so as you get off the road and onto Interstate 95 on the driver’s right-hand side.

It turns out, according to Shawnlei Breeding, the Audubon EagleWatch program manager with the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, the nest is home to a pair of mated bald eagles. It was first active in 2009, but Breeding said that represents the first year it was reported and not necessarily the year it became active.

Breeding added that Florida has one of the largest breeding populations of bald eagles outside of Alaska.

“We are fortunate to live here and be able to see them!,” said Breeding in an e-mail.

Despite the fact it rests in a dead or dying pine tree, Breeding said one chick was fledged in the nest in 2019 and two more were fledged in 2020.

In December 2017, Breeding said a volunteer with Audubon let her know that trees were being cleared out by the nest. After reaching out to both the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it was determined by an FWC officer that the work being done by a developer did not meet the federal bald eagle management guideline requirements of not working within 330 feet of the nest during nesting season.

The USFWS added that it didn’t have a permit because the developer had said it would follow the guidelines.

The work was stopped and

The nest is referred to in Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission parlance under the name BE072.

Breeding added she received photos of the tree last year that showed that the tree appeared to be dying and a drive by the area shows this to be the case.

Still, despite the issues with the tree, Breeding said one chick was fledged in the nest in 2019 and two more were fledged in 2020. The latter chicks were able to be fledged even after Breeding said a volunteer reported in February of this year that someone had driven over a sidewalk and curb in the area and had parked under

Volunteers help students advance with donated computers

“Freebie” Bassett lives up to his nickname, founding Computers Advancing Education (CAE) that has provided 31,000 free refurbished computers to schools, students, teachers and nonprofit organizations.

“I want everyone to have the technology they need to compete in this world, especially now with COVID, and classes online,” Fremont Bassett said.

A pilot and aircraft mechanic, he knew little about computers a decade ago.

“A man I knew worked in Cairo and his son couldn’t stay in contact with him. Me and my sons John and Greg refurbished a computer and gave it to him for Christmas.

I realized there are other households without a computer and that’s how it started.”

His work is a blessing for Ashley Hopper of Titusville and her three children.

“Now, with my kids doing their schoolwork from home

because of the virus, you don’t know what this means,” she said.

Bassett said requests for computers expanded exponentially. Since March, more than 600 computers have been distributed, thanks to 35 trained volunteers who show up Tuesdays to accept donated computers, strip them of all data, test and upgrade them with Windows 10, Office Suite and anti-virus software and recirculate them. Qualifying families can receive a reduced rate on internet service through Spectrum, AT&T, Comcast and Connect2complete.

Wajita Khan, the executive director of Viera Children’s Academy, said receiving computers a few years ago “really helped our children receive hands-on new technology. It’s important that children start at an early age.”

Metal components that can’t be used are recycled to earn $2,800 a year to buy software and office equipment. Bobbi Lasher of Cocoa, nicknamed the

Several Brevard County businesses have donated outdated computer parts and components. Collins Aerospace gave 75,000 pounds of equipment in the past 18 months alone.

Charter School and Pinecrest Academy that are enrolled in the program will receive transportation provided by the program to the VRCC. Parents will be responsible for picking up their children.

After students are picked up from their schools at 2:30 p.m., a homework and snack time begins at 2:45 p.m., according to Brevard County Parks and Recreation. From there, enrollees have an opportunity to have a snack and do their homework from 2:45 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Thereafter, enrollees will participate in an outdoor activity beginning at 4 p.m.

before coming back inside for an activity at 5 p.m. prior to the program’s conclusion each day at 6 p.m.

Students from other schools are permitted to be enrolled in the program, but parents or guardians must provide for their students to be dropped off and picked up.

A maximum of 18 students are allowed in the program.

Changing Viera East Priorities “Changing Viera East Priorities” - In July 2019 at the annual CDD meeting, the Viera East CDD (VECDD) Board voted for the largest tax increase in Viera East history! Bill Oakley, Melinda Thomsen and Jo Walsh, incumbents seeking re-election, heard from 50 residents of 300 in attendance. 85% of the residents were against a bloated $11 million dollar bond the CDD board passed with zero discussion. 96% of the bond went solely to the VECDD golf course. Resident wishes of no bond and more fiscal responsibility fell on deaf ears. The CDD bond meeting process was repeated by Bill Oakley and the others in November 2019 to address inconsistencies in the July bond. Again, residents spoke against or mailed in numerous letters, but incumbents Bill Oakley, Thomsen, Walsh, and others voted unanimously for the bond.

CDD taxes were due to drop significantly in 2023 and 2026 when the existing CDD bonds were paid off. In a “Shell Game” move, the current CDD Board added millions in new debt, raising 2023 Viera East CDD taxes for the next 18 years vs. allowing the bond to sunset.

Experts contend that the high CDD taxes bring Viera East property values down. The result is large chunks of undeveloped commercial land on the east side of Viera, long after the

residential property was developed.

Private lawsuits, one residential and one commercial, brought against the VECDD caused the 2019 bond issuance to be delayed.

Current CDD Board Members responded by spending $350,000 of CDD money in legal fees, employing multiple remarkably high price attorneys. By contrast, the two private lawsuits saved the district roughly $500,000 in deferred interest the district would have paid since July 2019, had the bond not been slowed. The lawsuits also forced lowering the principal amount of the bond by several million and removed from CDD plans a $3.5 Million luxury clubhouse. A reduced bond came as a forced settlement before the upcoming election.

Unfortunately, 96% of the new $7 Million bond still goes solely to the golf course, not equitably to all Viera East.

To reestablish public trust in the Viera East CDD, residents Pete Carnesale, Steve Colasinski, and Rob Dale (CCD) are running for three open CDD board seats (Seats 3, 4, 5) in this November’s CDD election. If elected, CCD will halt for review, any new contracts passed by the current Viera East CDD board.

The alternative is to allow the 3 incumbent CDD board members, to spend 96% of their new $7 Million in cash on a golf course

spending spree. This November’s election is a referendum on the actions of the current CDD board.

Bowlds hopes to help her art students discover creative potential

BY JUDY BERMAN As a scientist, Pat Bowlds drew molecules. It wasn’t until the early 1990s, when she was working for IBM in England, that she first picked up a paintbrush.

Her first art teacher, Alan Roe, helped her realize that she could paint.

“To discover something about oneself is an amazing experience, especially as you get older,” said Bowlds, a resident of Viera.

Now, she loves reinterpreting landscapes into a contemporary look “that has a touch of abstraction.”

“It’s never my goal to paint realism. The thing I love about abstract art is each painting is perceived differently, depending on the viewer,” Bowlds said.

“This painting may establish a strong connection with the viewer and evoke a range of emotions,” Bowlds said.

‘With her childhood behind, the girl’s expression reveals a combination of scorn and disrespect. While she has an air of confidence, she is uncertain of her future.”

Bowlds learned this technique in a workshop and also teaches students in her classes at the gallery.

She uses a wide variety of new materials and techniques, and teaches them how to supercharge their watercolors using inks and acrylic paints.

What she wants those in her classes to remember is “that creating art is not just for the well-schooled in art.

Everybody is much more creative than they think they are.”

“My teaching goal is to help them find that out.”

Bowlds draws on her experience as a college professor in organic chemistry when she designs her classes.

“My approach to education is different from a lot of artists, in that I document everything with things that they can take away,” she said.

She provides subject material so they can create their own ideas. She lists objectives, the end product, and how students can fix mistakes.

Lowers, who lives in St. Augustine, is a freelance artist with degrees in graphic design and fine arts.

She has been reluctant to share her personal creations, which lately have been themed around realistic graphite drawings mixing female portraits with octopuses.

She met Adams about four years ago while visiting friends in Brevard County.

For a year or more, they were only friends. But what started out as a friendship — once both realized that their differences could be their strengths going forward — became a relationship destined for marriage. And, they had laughed about having a small wedding, she said.

BY MIKE GAFFEY Melbourne artist Nicholas Roberts has a flair for the surreal but a soft spot for space.

A creator of imaginative, intricate art pieces, the painter, graphic designer, digital artist and freelance illustrator is finding inspiration from thunderous rocket launches from the Space Coast.

Two of his paintings, “The Sky is Ours No. 1 and No. 2,” are on display at the Art Gallery of Viera at 2251 Town Center Ave., Suite 105 in The Avenue Viera.

“It’s pretty cool that we’ve got (SpaceX founder) Elon Musk coming here, SpaceX and NASA revamping,” said Roberts, who grew up in the

Orlando area before moving to Brevard County.

“Just always hearing the sonic booms from the space shuttles coming back home and going to launches — to everybody who lives here it’s near and dear to the heart.”

While some space fans might prefer paintings of astronauts, Roberts strives to capture the drama and spectacle of liftoff on canvas.

“They’re powerful bursts of energy that shoot off into the sky,” Roberts said. “It’s pretty darn amazing and that happens in our backyard

Roberts also has designed space mission patches for his employer, Satellite Beachbased MTN Advertising. “I’ve been able to design patches that have gone up to the International Space Station,” he noted.

Roberts originally wanted to be a comic book artist but said he lost interest through the years. Two comic book illustrators, Moebius and Jack Kirby, still influence the UCF graduate’s work, along with creations by Swedish digital artist Kilian Eng. “I’m really inspired by (Eng’s) work because I love drawing lots of details and lots of things going on and that’s kind of reflected in my digital work, but I’m trying to transition that into my more traditional work,” said Roberts, who mainly works with acrylic but creates in other mediums such as oil, watercolor, graphite and charcoal.

“It’s a little more challenging because with digital you can zoom in really close and get all these sorts of details. But it’s a little more

challenging to do on a piece of paper or on a canvas.”

Response to the launch paintings has been positive, Roberts said. “As of lately, I haven’t been able to be around people to get feedback, but when I post it online I’ve gotten good feedback,” he said.

Roberts hopes his space artwork leads to commissions to create paintings or murals for space agencies.

“I’d totally be open to something like that,” Roberts

said. “And I always loved doing mission patches and anything space related.”

In the meantime, he’s enjoying life on the Space Coast with his wife, Tiffany, and their two children.

“I love the action of the Space Coast with all the launches, and it’s a nice area where everybody’s friendly,” he said. “It’s a great place to live.”

The all-suite, four-story hotel at 2404 Metfield Drive features kitchenettes in

every suite, free parking, free hot breakfast and in-room and lobby WiFi, an indoor, sustainable and eco-friendly saltwater pool, an oversized patio, outdoor seating, a fire pit and grills, a fitness center, a business center and an onsite restaurant.

The Viera location is the third Home2 Suites hotel to open in Brevard County in 2020. A 108-room Home2 Suites opened near Port Canaveral and an 87-room hotel opened in Palm Bay. Some 350 hotels already have opened and Hilton plans to open another 445 properties.

Viera resident named executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Brevard

BY CHRIS BONANNO Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County has named Viera resident Anna Terry as its executive director.

Terry had previously served in an interim role in the position beginning in November and was recently named to the position permanently.

“I just want to make sure we're representing Habitat as a brand," said Terry, 57.

Terry had previously been managing Habitat for Humanity’s Palm Bay ReStore, which is an independently-owned reuse

store that accepts donations and sells home improvement goods for less than retail prices.

Prior to her time in Brevard, Terry worked at Chico’s FAS headquarters in Fort Myers after moving to Southwest Florida in 2011. Prior to that, the selfdescribed “California girl,” who was born in San Diego, also worked in international retail as both a buyer and product developer for brands that include Guess and Nordstrom, according to a release from Habitat for Humanity.

Pandemic brings traditional shofar blowing service outdoors

BY ERNEST ARICO The shofar came outside for Rosh Hashanah this year.

On the high holiday - the Jewish New Year - which began at sundown Friday, Sept. 18, congregants typically bring their shofars (ram’s horns) to the bimah (synagogue stage) and blow.

However, with the coronavirus pandemic limiting indoor observations, members of Temple Beth Sholom in Suntree decided to bring their horns outdoors and sound them simultaneously for those sitting in their vehicles parked in the synagogue’s parking lots. The event took place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept.

20.

“This was a rare opportunity to do it safely for all of our members,” said Bill Troner, president of Temple Beth Sholom. “And for those who couldn’t attend, we streamed the event live on our special Zoom site.”

What does the shofar symbolize?

According to Jewish tradition, on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (The Day of the Shofar Blast), Jewish people read Genesis 22, a story from the Torah that ends with Abraham sacrificing a ram - instead of his son Isaac - on the altar.

“The ram, in some ways, represents redemption, because the ram saves Isaac,” Rabbi Craig Mayers explained.

“We’re hoping that listening to the shofar can save us from our mistakes and sins. One of the purposes of shofar is to startle the spirit and to wake us out of complacency."

The shofar has specific responses to traditional Hebrew calls: tekiah (a long, sustained blast), shevarim (three medium blasts), teruah (a number of short blasts in a row) and tekiah gedolah (an extra-long, sustained blast).

Lake Andrew Drive extension will spur more Viera growth

BY CHRIS BONANNO A new Tommy’s Express Car Wash is set to be constructed at the intersection of Stadium Parkway and Veterans Way in Viera, near the USSSA Space Coast Complex, a site plan shows.

The business is slated to open in the spring of 2021 according to Michael M. Ash, Sr., whose RCH Properties,

LLC will own the car wash franchise.

“The current contractor schedule says May sometime, but with weather and everything, you never know,” Ash said. “It could be between April and June.”

According to site plans, the car wash will be a 5,200 square-foot building with 20 self-serve vacuum parking spaces.

Tommy's Express Car Wash is slated to open in the spring of 2021.

Tommy’s Express locations in Florida, with five more labeled “as coming soon,” the company’s website shows.

All are located along the Gulf Coast of Florida and the upcoming Viera location is not mentioned.

Ash said there were about 100 locations nationally. The website indicated many more

were in the works across the country.

Cars are washed as they traverse through a tunnel that is roughly 130 feet long.

“It’s pretty cool. You don’t get claustrophobic in this thing,” Ash said. “It’s wide open.”

The tunnel also features a conveyor belt that moves

vehicles through, Ash added.

“No risk of any kind of wheel or rim damage,” Ash said.

He also noted that it would be quick for cars to get through the process, adding that some locations have been able to service “as many as 230 cars per hour.”

“Roughly two minutes in and out,” Ash said. “…. Your car comes out very clean and very dry.”

The website also states that Tommy’s Express locations have low energy use and reclaimed water in an effort to help the environment.

Renewed Suntree Plaza will include micro offices, coffee shop

Having nearly finished a $300,000 facelift of Suntree Plaza, owners Mary and Mike Renfro are focusing on creating a new kind of coffee shop, similar to a “Cheers” in friendliness and a center bar layout, to also include micro office workspaces.

The Renfros purchased the plaza last October and have since undertaken major renovations, including a new security system, removing overgrown landscape that had hidden the businesses, new signage and a brighter paint job.

One major expense involved reducing the number of columns running along the front of the property, each of which required special reinforcement to structurally be able to carry the weight, he said. The cost was worth it to open up the covered walkway to more light and make the plaza look more modern, he said.

The 2,300 square foot space for the unique yet-tobe-named coffee shop with patio seating, located at 6977 N. Wickham Road, is the northernmost unit in the four-building, 14,000 square foot plaza located on two acres. The main anchor at

the plaza is Niki’s Restaurant at 6947 N. Wickham Road, which like other current tenants will remain unchanged.

The coffee shop unit was designed, as all the units in the plaza, with a single span across the ceiling tying into the exterior walls. There are no support columns in the center to break up the look and take up valuable space.

The four micro offices along the exterior walls, each big enough for a desk and other work space, will share a small conference or community room and restrooms. Glass doors will enable office space renters to see inside the coffee shop, but still have it quiet enough to

work comfortably.

The micro offices, to be managed by Amber Carroll, are expected to be popular with work-at-home parents and others impacted by the shut downs related to the COVID-19 virus. Many are tired of working alone and home and want to be productive, but around people.

All that is needed now is an experienced coffee shop operator to help make their ideas of a place “where everybody knows their name” into a reality for the Suntree area, Mary Renfro said. VV

BY CHRIS BONANNO A new apartment complex located off Wickham Road in Suntree will soon open for residents.

Phase 1 of the new Legacy at Oakwood Landing Apartment complex in Suntree is set to open in early November, according to Stacy Dahms, the property manager with Legacy. The first phase consists of 56 of

the complex’s 274 units.

The other units, part of 13 three-story buildings of the complex, will open later as Phase 2 and 3.

“I think first and foremost we’ve gotten a lot of attention about the location,” Dahms said.

According to a brochure from Legacy, one-, two- and three-bedroom units are available at the complex, which also has concrete

block construction. Garage and storage units also are available.

The complex has a host of features that include barbecue grills, a car wash station, electric car-charging stations, a playroom for kids tot lot, a swimming pool and what Legacy calls a “stateof-the-art” fitness center.

Additionally, there is a dog wash station and a dog park.

“We’re very focused on outdoor amenities,” Dahms said.

From an indoor perspective, units feature vinyl plank flooring, impactresistant windows and

under-mount sinks with garbage disposals and other amenities.

Dahms also noted the presence of 45 to 50 oak trees, some of which are illuminated. She also added that the complex has a nature trail.

There also are three lakes on the property. According to a site plan, one lake has two fountains while another has one.

The complex is owned and developed by the CFH group, which has developed similar projects in South Florida.

“We’ve been accepting applications since early May,” Dahms said.

If you have ever been in a pickle, tonguetied, had too much of a good thing, refused to budge an inch, or heard your folks say, “You’ve eaten me out of house and home,” then you’ve been living with the words of William Shakespeare.

He was able to put words together so beautifully that today, almost 460 years after his birth, we are still quoting Shakespeare.

‘All the world’s a stage’

Shakespeare invented hundreds of words, used them in brand-new ways and wrote lines that opened up new ways of seeing. Words from his plays and poems still ring true today.

His plays include “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet” and “Julius Caesar.” He is also famous for a special kind of poetry called a sonnet (SAHN-ut).

‘The play’s the thing’

People in Shakespeare’s time loved to play with words. They also loved proverbs, or sayings. Shakespeare shared these loves. He invented hundreds of sayings.

Some of the language may have already been in use at the time, but his works are the only record we have of it.

Pomp and circumstance

Let’s explore some of Shakespeare’s words that we still use today.

• If you’ve ever been to a high school or college graduation ceremony, you probably heard a song called “Pomp and Circumstance.”

This phrase comes from Act 3 of Shakespeare’s play “Othello,” but the characters aren’t talking about high school. “Pomp and circumstance” in this case refers to the ceremony and excitement of warfare.

• Family members Your own flesh will sometimes call and blood each other their “own flesh and blood.”

Shakespeare used this phrase in several of his plays, including “Hamlet” and “Merchant of Venice.”

• This funny saying Eaten me out of is from the play “Henry the Fourth.” house and home A woman who takes in boarders, or people who rent a room, is talking about Sir John Falstaff, who “hath put all my substance into that fat belly of his.”

• You might say For goodness’ “For goodness’ sake!” sake when you drop a ball or trip on a branch. But Shakespeare meant it differently. In “Henry the Eighth,” it means “for the sake of goodness and decency.”

‘Be that as it may’ Although Shakespeare’s words are familiar to us today, we don’t have any manuscripts of his work in his own handwriting. In 1623, two of his actor friends published the “First Folio.” A folio (FO-lee-o) is a special kind of book.

There are only 232 known copies of the First Folio still in existence.

Unfortunately, no two are exactly alike. Printers of the time put the folios together in different orders.

Sometimes they decided to correct what they thought were errors; punctuation was put in differently, and the spellings of some words changed. Actors and directors may have changed things in the plays too.

By looking at all the versions, scholars have put together what they believe are the most accurate scripts.

The First Folio contains 36 of Shakespeare’s plays. If we didn’t have this book, we would have lost about half of his plays, including “Macbeth” and “Twelfth Night.”

The facility in totality will have 145 units, according to Debbie Gentry, the operations director with Concord Management, a property management company.

Some of those units are part of a large, fourstory building, Gentry said.

Others will be part of nine one-story villas.

Gentry added that the units include onebedroom, two-bedroom and two-bedroom with den apartments. A sign on the property shows that onebedroom units will range in price from $820 to $1,039

per month, which Gentry said includes an optional washer-dryer and one reserved parking space.

Two-bedroom units will range from $967 to $1,311 and two-bedroom with den apartments will range between $1,109 to $1,469.

Amenities at the facility, according to the Venue’s website, include a business center, heart-healthy cardio and fitness studio and a clubhouse replete with a collector’s edition 1965 Ford Mustang pool table.

Though an exact opening date is not known, Gentry said she is hopeful the complex will open in

January.

Stock market still remains baffling in troubling times I keep asking, “What’s up with the stock market?”

Pun intended.

My inquisitive nature led me to do research on the phenomena known as the U.S. Stock Market. I just don’t get it.

So, let’s say you have $1,000 extra (one grand) and you can’t decide what to do with it. You can go to Disney World, which is essentially a people trap set by a mouse.

Think about it.

You’re drawn there by a mouse for a grand adventure, but after two days the only thing grand is what’s missing from your wallet.

Or, you could buy more health insurance so you can be ill at ease (pun intended again). Speaking of insurance, how do atheists justify paying for insurance that only pays off from an act of God. You finally come down to the choice of the stock market or a casino. Now someone tell me what’s the difference.

Greed never goes extinct during troubling times

One of my favorite people, Jane Goodall, wisely recognizes that “it’s important to take advantage of the time we have, right now, because we never know how much longer we have left in this life.”

That is so true …

My dad just spent a little more than a week in ICU. Besides being worried about him and scared about what the outcome could be, the feeling of powerlessness was overwhelming.

These are times that get us thinking, pondering life, the things we can change and others that we cannot control.

Goodall is one of the world’s most prominent and popular primatologists, ethologists, anthropologists and environmental activists.

Despite all the adversities

and setbacks, she continues to fight for the greater good.

Why? Alice Outwater documents in her book "Water: A Natural History" how the colonization process affected our land and water and drove beavers to near extinction.

In the 1600s, “the beavers disappeared trap by trap, and hat by hat,” Outwater writes on page 31. She continues to describe the effects that removing beavers from the environment had on everything else - wetlands,

water quality, rivers and all the various species living in those environments that depended on ponds and wetlands created by beaver engineers.

All gone.

“The primeval splendor of the land disappeared with the beaver’s demise.”

Today, most people understand the connection between water, land and forests as well as our dependency on the earth resources and services provided to us for free - that affect our health and way of living. People are a lot more aware of issues like those and are more willing to fight to preserve those resources.

Forest services have learned from past "well-intentioned mismanagement" and are able to apply more effective

techniques that benefit the land long term.

In the modern days, we have means to try to discourage and stop that kind of destruction through studies and lawsuits; grassroots movement to stop loggers and plant more trees; ecologists and biologists who keep track of habitats and populations and work to reestablish their numbers and prevent species extinction; and animal advocates fighting to save various species.

But I am afraid it is not so much the gap in knowledge or lack of resources that profoundly affect the environment and our lives.

It is the arrogance of the human species and greed that are driving destruction and animal extinction.

Despite what some

might think, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "this planet can provide for human need but not for human greed."

Natural resources are depleting fast. The battle to preserve and restore habitats, build through sustainable development, educate people on the connection between nature, natural resources and humans (and our future!) and instill best practices into everyday living still continues. Like Goodall, we will probably never stop, but hopefully the level of destruction will diminish as ecological conscience grows.

Other trees, such as birch and walnut, also supply similar syrup. Vermont is our country’s top maple syrup producer, and the Canadian province of Quebec claims 70 percent of the global output.

In addition, trees provide wood for esteemed products.

For example, the bodies of string musical instruments, such as violins, are made from wood. The treasured Stradivarius violins were handcrafted from spruce, maple and willow during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Today, they are worth millions of dollars.

Woods of quality also are handcrafted by Steinway for outstanding pianos. This American company was established in 1853. It uses Sitka spruce for its piano soundboards. In 1938, it presented an exclusive Steinway, veneered in Honduran mahogany, to the White House. Certainly, this brand has been acclaimed by many artists, from Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist, to Irving Berlin, a most prolific American songwriter who died in 1989

at 101 years of age.

Berlin featured the Steinway in his song “I Love a Piano.”

Unique wooden products were convenient in the past. Cradles of birch bark were utilized by some Native Americans. Covered wagons were constructed of maple, hickory and oak.

The Pullman sleeper car displayed a luxurious black walnut interior — it was part of Lincoln’s funeral train. Wooden nickels served as emergency currency in Blaine, Washington during the Great Depression. The 1933 Chicago World’s Fair offered wooden nickels as souvenirs; such keepsakes still are popular.

Today, some wooden items are substituted or face competition. For example, wine corks made from the bark of cork oak are sometimes replaced by synthetic corks or aluminum screw caps. Wooden building studs compete with metal. Precast concrete railroad ties, instead of wood, are in demand for highspeed passenger railroads.

Nevertheless, many household products are made from wood components: rayon bath towels, nail polish, makeup, toothpaste, disinfecting wipes or medications. To ensure trees continue to enhance our quality of life with natural or innovative products, scientists are dedicated to maintaining forests through proper management.
