Birthday takes on new meaning for child and animals

When McKenzie Hibbett’s parents took her to a local animal shelter to pick out a second pooch to become a companion to their first rescue dog, Logan, she noticed how much the animals were lacking in basic necessities such as enough food, treats, litter and other items that would make them more comfortable.

Her heart went out to all of the animals sheltered in small cages that barely accommodate them.

So after adopting their new mixed breed dog, Sadie, she told her parents she wanted to do something to make a difference.

“I felt sorry for all of the animals in the shelter that didn’t have homes or enough food to eat,” she said. “I thought I should help them somehow.”

So for McKenzie’s 8th birthday, she asked her friends to donate gifts for the animals instead of bringing birthday presents for her during her birthday party Dec. 6.

“I have lots of things but the animals don’t,” she said. “My

Her two pooches, Logan and Sadie, are spry little terriers who obviously love McKenzie and her sister, 5-year-old Samantha. They seem to realize what a big heart the 8 year old has and lavish her with plenty of kisses and tail wagging.

As a Brownie with Troop 4094 and a student at Quest Elementary, McKenzie participates in many activities.

Her favorite subject in school is art where she can draw pictures of all kinds of animals.

She hopes that other children and their families will take a cue from her giving spirit and donate to the shelters during the holiday season “because they need a lot of food and help.” VV

Guardian Ad Litem volunteer turns recruiter

When Amber Olesen relocated to Brevard County from Maine a year and a half ago, she immediately felt a connection to the community.

She wanted to volunteer in the area by working with children.

As a mother of a 9 year old, Olesen knows how important it is to have someone support a child in need. She wanted to be there for those children who wanted someone on their side, to protect and reassure them when they needed it most.

So Olesen became a volunteer guardian ad litem after completing the required classes and learning as much as she could about the program. It turned out to be a perfect fit.

Now, she is the volunteer recruiter who interviews new volunteers for the program and gets them started in child advocate classes so they can become one of the more than 200 members of this exemplary program.

Volunteers can work as little or as much as they want.

“There is a misconception that our volunteers can’t do this and continue with their regular jobs. Most volunteers spend only eight to 10 hours a month. Many have just one or two children they see, others have more. We need advocates and are actively seeking more volunteers,” Olesen said.

Guardians are unpaid volunteers who must be at least 21 years old, pass a general background check and complete the basic classes at the courthouse.

as they want, whether it is full time or just a few hours a week,” Olesen added.

There are more than 700 children in the system who depend on guardians to make sure they are receiving the kind of care they need from their foster homes. Advocates visit the child at least once a month, report to the court and recommend services the child might need.

“We work with a nonprofit organization, Friends of Children of Brevard. They hold fundraisers for the program,” Olesen said.

Donations are always welcome and needed.

The next class begins Jan. 11 at the courthouse. There will be a Mix and Mingle gathering at the Cellar Door Wine Lounge in Suntree from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 9 where people can learn more about the program.

Olesen encourages everyone who is interested to attend and to bring a friend. There will be a job fair at One Senior Place on March 21. People of all ages and ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

Designing the next generation of resolve in the New Year

Many people commit to working on their best self in the New Year. Mike Gisondi believes that no time is the wrong time to make that resolution, sometimes daily — or moment to moment — after we realize that fear or any other obstacle is holding us back.

“Just as athletes learn how to win, each of us can learn the skills to assure our success in life,” Gisondi said. He has a passion to speak to and inspire three groups in this order: young people growing up in challenging situations, young people of any background, and people of any age. He has spoken to youngsters in the most challenged area of Brevard, the Powell Subdivision of south Melbourne.

“I don’t think I’m any different than anyone else. I think it’s a natural human state to share things and ideas that have made life better personally. I’ve had a lot of people share good things with me and I want to pass that on,” he said. “We’re all traveling together.”

Three generations of Grace lead to River dance

If boomer Michael Grace is pleased with one thing, it is the feeling of his father’s presence when he looks at his son, River. The young Grace never

got to meet his grandfather, but in a way, the senior Grace inspired higher education across the generations.

“My father never had the opportunity to go to college because he had a hard life like

many of his generation, but he conducted research throughout his life,” said Michael Grace, Ph.D., a Florida Institute of Technology associate dean of the College of Science and professor in the Department

of Biological Sciences.

“My parents knew the value of commitment and education, and made sure we had both,” he said of Bobby and Alice Grace.

That push has really paid off in third-generation River. At age 14 in October, he was named the Grand Prize winner of the 2013 Broadcom MASTERS science fair competition, earning the Samueli Foundation Prize and $25,000.

He gained the notice of the scientific community with the discovery that endangered Malagasy radiated tortoises rose up and shuffled rhythmically in a rain storm.

River hypothesized the “rain dance” could be to survive should a flash flood occur.

“I’m confident that much of who he is comes from his grandfather,” Michael Grace said, “and I am absolutely sure his grandfather would have loved who River is. My dad was a very passionate person, much like River, taking whatever he did very

seriously and embracing challenges with enthusiasm.”

National competitions aim to spur an interest among youth in science, technology, engineering and math — STEM — upon which contemporary economics bases the country’s bright future. River also earned the award based on STEM activities throughout the competition week.

This month, the “mathlete” will start postholiday competitions in which he also excels.

“I like to think he gets that from his grandmother,” Grace said. “She was very intelligent and skipped a grade, and now she is a retired accountant.”

Structure and discipline to keep out distractions is important, said River’s mother, Tanya, but two other things count: good nutrition, and being a smart and nice person to begin with.

“He was always a good kid, even when I was pregnant with him.” VV

Viera High students give hats off to chemo patients

Patients at the Space Coast Cancer Center (SCCC) received a nice gift over the holiday season when Viera High School students in Susan West’s sculpture classes donated 40 hats they had knitted.

“I enjoy the arts,” said senior Arthur Mezheritskiy. “Not just drawing, but working with my

hands and making things.

“I had a lot of fun with this project, and I’m excited because I think giving back should be beneficial to both you and the person.”

West said her mother-in-law began making hats for Knots of Love, a non-profit charity that donates knitted and crocheted hats for chemo patients. Soon West and her daughter were

making hats as well, and the teacher in her decided it would be a good project to share with her students.

Last year, the students donated items to a veterans center. This time around, it was for chemo patients.

“A lot of the kids have had family members or people that they know who have had cancer,” West said. “So when

Old shoes get new life through Girl Scout program

The Girl Scouts want your shoes. Daisy Troop 647 and Brownie Troop 497 are part of a larger Girl Scout effort to collect gently used shoes that might otherwise be discarded.

Girl Scouts of Citrus is partnering with Shoebox Recycling, which cleans the shoes and ships them to places worldwide where affordable shoes are hard to find.

The girls will be collecting through March, but the task ahead is daunting. Every troop that sends in three 40-pound boxes of shoes will get a special “Scouting for Shoes” badge, and these scouts are going above and beyond: each troop has five boxes to fill.

The scouts in Heath’s troops took interest in the project when they learned that a pair of shoes takes about 200 years to decompose. More than half of them brought shoes to their very next meeting.

They will also participate in the “Find Your SoleMate” part of the program. The scouts will fill out a special form to put in the shoes, hoping that the recipients will write back.

“Some people have become pen pals over it,” Heath said. “Some programs don’t do that; often you donate and you have no idea where they go.”

Because of the shoes’ purpose, they cannot accept flip-flops, skates, Crocs, ski boots or bedroom slippers, but everything else — from tennis shoes to heels to cowboy boots to cleats — is fair game.

Wetlands’ “best friend” to be permanently remembered By linda Wiggins

Government and community leaders, citizens group members, fans and friends of legendary local naturalist and photographer Charlie Corbeil of Suntree are planning ways to remember him that will peak with an April festival to celebrate his beloved wetlands.

Major naming opportunities are under consideration for the man who photographed and shared the Viera Wetlands with nature enthusiasts from across Brevard and around the world, and taught them to photograph its wildlife as well.

A special edition birding guide by expo producer and Viera Voice publisher Bluewater Creative Group was printed this month and dedicated to Corbeil featuring his wildlife photos.

The Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide is available at the Viera Wetlands entrance information kiosk and at the newspaper offices at 7630 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 105 in Viera.

The waves of condolences and expressions of Corbeil’s greatness and kindness are a healing balm, said his wife, Charlotte, author of the “Parting Shot” column in Viera Voice.

The feature showcased birds and other wildlife that make their home primarily on the Space Coast alongside Charlie’s photos of them. He passed away recently after complications from a fall.

“Charlie’s friends have been a great comfort in their comments.

He was a sincere and gentle man and enjoyed everyone he met,” Charlotte Corbeil said.

The wetlands have lost a best friend, according to Environmental Land Manager Raleigh T. Berry III with the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, which oversees the wetlands.

“He’ll be hard to replace. No, impossible,” said Berry, Brevard County liaison to the nonprofit Friends of Viera Wetlands (FOVW).

The fourth annual Miles for Myles 5K is set for Jan. 18. It is a perfect event for runners, walkers and especially family and friends who not only get a chance to spend time together, but raise money for a worthy cause.

The fourth annual Miles for Myles 5K run will always be a special event because it not only helps preserve the memory of Viera High student Myles Freeberg, but it also helps raise money to support internships and scholarships for high school students.

This year’s race will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. The course begins on the Viera High track, which surrounds the soccer field where Myles once played, and goes through Viera Regional Park.

“It’s extremely special and important to us,” said Tom Freeberg, Myles’ father. “It’s a great way to recognize Myles as a scholar-athlete, but also people run with his memory and we play with his music.

The music that’s played during the run is straight off his iPod. “That kind of brings back the memory. There are friends of his who are in college now who come back each year for the run.”

The race has averaged

roughly 400 runners the previous three years.

The Myles Freeberg Foundation has awarded three internships each year through the Viera High School Academy of Business and Finance as well as a total of 34 scholarships (13 each of the past two years) involving as many as five high schools through the Brevard Schools Foundation.

The 5K entry fee is $25, with the first 200 registered runners receiving a free T-shirt. Because of generous sponsorships covering the low cost of the event, the entire entry fee goes to paying for the internships and scholarships.

The race is set up to be more of a fun family event than a competitive race.

Strollers are welcome and there is no pressure to run.

For those who do want to time themselves, there will be a running clock on the scoreboard.

The Viera High boys basketball team may have gotten off to a rough start, but the good news for the Hawks is that there is still plenty of time to turn things around.

“We have definitely made improvements as the year has gone on,” Viera coach Josh Sykes said. “We’re going in the right direction. That’s a positive signal.”

Viera was still looking for its first win after dropping the first nine games of the season. Senior point guard and team captain Kenny Anderson said the problem is that the team had yet to put four full quarters together.

“We have a lot of young talent and we have a lot of athletic guys, but … There are a lot of games where we can’t play a full game,” Anderson said.

“We only play good for the first half, or we only play good for the second half. Teams take advantage of that.”

Anderson is one of four returning seniors on the roster, which features six seniors overall. Dylan and Devon Smith are also back, along with Zack Roy. The other two seniors are Kai Wade and Terreon Johnson-Williams.

Junior Michael Johnson is Anderson’s backup at the point, while other key returners include John Tavarez and London Gowins. Josh

When Viera is playing well, Anderson said, players are sharing the ball, not turning it over, and making sure everyone is getting a chance to touch the ball.

The Hawks are pointing to

their district competition and postseason tournament as a way to help turn things around.

As Anderson said, there is still plenty of fight left in Viera.

“They’re a good group of boys,” Sykes said. “They’re working. They have a common goal to compete in the district and they know all of this leads to that. The process of the season is to get better as the year goes on, and that’s what our goal is right now, to improve daily.” VV

Viera girls hoping to pick up where they left off last season

The goal of this year’s Viera High girls basketball team is to pick up where last year’s team left off ... and presumably take it a few steps further.

All the Hawks need for motivation can be found in the feeling of last year’s loss to Buchholz in the Class 7A regional finals, a game that went back and forth throughout.

“It makes me mad to think about it, so I try not to,” said senior Dee Anderson.

To which teammate Ro Hayes replied: “Yeah, but it motivates us, because we don’t want to feel that same feeling. So we’re working hard so we’ll win and we don’t have to feel that.”

With Anderson (who signed with the University of Florida) and Hayes (who is bound for Florida Atlantic) leading the way, the Hawks certainly have the firepower to at least put themselves back in the position

That’s because they have plenty of help. Junior Kelsey Muller, who missed half of last season with an injury, is back (though she is coming off another injury) along with senior Shania Brantley and sophomore Alyssa Laudato.

Sophomore Cailea Gibbs, a transfer from Kansas, has been a big addition, as has the return of senior Alex Bynum and the play of juniors Jessika Wojciehowski and Teresa McCoy. “Potentially, I think we’re a better team,” Viera coach Jamie Risberg said. “But that’s yet to be written or determined.”

Though Viera was off to a 10-0 start, Risberg said the team had been playing a little up and down and needed to show more consistency.

Hayes and Anderson, who have been playing together since the fifth grade, have taken their leadership roles seriously as they try to finish out their decorated high school careers in style.

“We won two championships together already (at McNair Middle School), so I guess a third one (and it) being our senior year would be great,” Hayes said.

Anytime you have to replace 18 seniors from the previous year’s team, you know it could be a long season.

But consider what the Viera High wrestling team has done this season.

Eight days after getting blown out by Titusville in a dual meet, the Hawks came back to beat the Terriers by three points.

“We see a lot of heart and dedication,” junior 106-pounder Chase Vollenweider said. “If the new guys keep doing that, hopefully, we’ll progress.”

Vollenweider, who was out for seven months after surgery to repair a torn meniscus, had a 13-3 record through midDecember. That included a win at the prestigious Barbara Pill Memorial Tournament, which featured eight Brevard County schools.

“That was a big accomplishment for me,” he said.

In all, the Hawks had six wrestlers place at the measuring-stick tournament with three reaching the finals.

Other top wrestlers this season include sophomore Gavin Johnson (113 pounds), who was 12-4 and finished second at the Barbara Pill tournament. Sophomore Aron Mahl (10-7) was also second at Barbara Pill at 132 pounds.

Junior Kris Wawrzyniak (9-8) and freshman Mason Lombardo also placed at the tournament.

Darius Dar is another top wrestler for the Hawks.

Jeremy Meehan (8-8) is the Hawks’ only senior this season.

The 145-pounder is taking on

more of a leadership role with the Hawks this season while also keeping his goals fairly simple.

Steve Henderson’s Holy Trinity boys basketball team likes to play tough defense, push the tempo on offense and see who can hang with them.

That could prove to be a tall order this season.

The Tigers were off to a 9-0 start, including big wins over Astronaut and Father Lopez, on the way to what they hope will be a deep postseason run in Class 4A. “I’ve been here for three years, and every year I’ve been here our goal has been to win districts and move on,” senior shooting guard Zach Ullian said. “Last year, we went to the regional semifinals, but I feel like this team is better than last year’s team when we’re playing well.”

With nine of 10 players back from last season, the Tigers certainly have a lot of familiarity with each other. Junior transfer Skyler Hogan, the lone newcomer, is the younger brother of standout forward Jace Hogan.

Jace Hogan, who broke several school records last season, was off to another strong start, averaging 23 points and 11.5 rebounds a game. Junior point guard Keoni Wallington was averaging 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

“Our focus has been on defense,” Henderson said. “It’s been our strength so far. We like to get out and push the tempo, which is something we

feel benefits us against teams throughout four quarters.”

Because the Tigers like to get out and run, it allows the players to operate in an offensive system that allows plenty of freedom to take advantage of their talents.

“I get to play my whole game,” Jace Hogan said. “He uses your strengths. Like (Zach) is a shooter. We set him up for shots.

If you’re a penetrator and you can handle it, he’ll set it up to get you in the paint. He works with your strengths like any good coach would do.” VV

The Viera East Men’s Golf Association (VEMA) continues o grow, thanks to the efforts of the current board and active members.

While Viera East Golf Club was undergoing some fairway maintenance in December, members enjoyed a golf outing at the Indian River Colony Club (IRCC). This course was a challenge for most competitors, with the hazards playing a major role in the higher final

scores. Doug Jackson and Jack McGinn finished first. Gary Shiffrin and Bob Sobeck placed second, and Ray Shorts and Bill Oakley were third. David Hogan, Dale Zeigler, Hank Zurowski and Ed Raleigh tied for fourth.

The VEMA Director’s Cup continues through January. The latest winners advancing to the semifinals were William Powell and Ted Edlow. They will face off, with the winner eventually playing Jim Robinson for the Flight 1 title. Enrico Dinnocenti and Tom Walker will play for the right to take on Andy Mammay for the Flight 2 title.

Eighteen holes were played recently as a fun shotgun scramble for both the Viera East Ladies Golf Association and the 18 hole golfers.

On the 14th hole, a golfer was designated to hit over the water. If they were successful, their team earned a coveted par.

On the par 3’s, if anyone drove onto the green, the team earned birdie.

Marcus Shalley of the pro shop hit the tee shot on No. 10 for each group. He always either reached or was near the green.

The team of Gertie Buren, Elaine Farentelli, Gladys Gillette and Ellen Price finished first, coming in with 74.

A luncheon followed at the Residents Club, with entertainment by the “Singing Golfers.”

New coach, improved results lift Holy Trinity girls basketball

A new coach and a new style of play have led to some new-found success for the Holy Trinity girls basketball team.

“I would say at this point, we’re having a good season,” first-year coach Marc Bailey said after his team’s 5-2 start.

“We’re building. We’re trying to turn the program around. We’re trying to create a positive, winning program.”

Bailey, 41, last coached basketball at Merritt Island 10 years ago but gave it up to start a family and his own business.

He began helping track coach Doug Butler two years ago and decided to return to basketball with some encouragement from seven of his track athletes, who also play basketball.

With only two seniors — forward Izzy Greenspoon and point guard Kendall Kara — to go with three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen, the Tigers are certainly a young team.

However, they’re also very athletic, and the ability to take advantage of that has been their strength so far.

“They hustle,” Bailey said.

“They play hard every night and they’re learning the game. Right now, we’re winning with a lot of effort, energy and hustle.”

Junior McKenzie Kilborne and sophomore Alisha Pound make up the backcourt for Holy Trinity, while freshmen Sadie Girard and Natalia Walcott play the forward spots and junior Milan Lanier is the center.

While there are times when

the Tigers have to be careful not to play too out of control, Kilborne said the fast-paced offense has been a good fit for the team’s talent.

“We play really fast,” Kilborne said. “I like it because I feel like we play better when we’re all in sync and going really fast. But there are some points where we just need to slow down and take a minute.”

The Tigers’ goals for the season are to reach the district finals.

Duck Dynasty craze puts Manatee students in top form

Manatee Elementary students got to dress in Duck Dynasty garb as an incentive to bring in more Box Tops for Education, and now they hope for a visit from characters in the show.

Tell a student they can dress up like their favorite wacky TV character at school and who knows what they will do for it.

This thought in mind, Samantha Guettler put out a casting call for anyone at Manantee Elementary School who wanted to dress like a Duck Dynasty character. A majority of the students—more than 400—and many of the staff and

The success of the recent event may bring some or all of the smash show’s characters to visit the school.

“We contacted the executive producer and got a letter back to confirm it is under discussion with the cast members, and we are waiting to hear back,”

Guettler said. “You never know.”

She organized the stunt to encourage students to bring in more Box Tops for Education.

Food product consumers cut out tiny certificates from box tops and other packaging and bring them to the school office or send them in with students.

The school gets 10 cents for each one. That adds up, Guettler said, allowing the school to

purchase many important items not included in the budget.

She has headed up the drive since her sixth grade son started kindergarten at the school. Since then, the annual amount raised increased from $2,000 a year to nearly $8,500 last year. With her youngest now in second grade, she has committed to continue for the next handful of years and always seeks to match or surpass the previous year.

“We hope that everyone, grandparents, other family members and friends of the family will take part, and if there is anyone who is not yet collecting for a school, we ask them to start clipping them and send them to the school,” Guettler said.

“One dime at a time, we can make a difference.”

Students at both the Upper and Lower Schools of Holy Trinity Episcopal schools recently took part in a nationwide initiative in support of computer science literacy. The Hour of Code encourages schools to give all students K-12 just 60 minutes to learn the basics of computer programming through free sites like Code.org.

During the week that took place in December, an estimated 10 million students participated.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Shakira voiced their own backing of the movement intended to teach even the smallest students the basics of computer programming.

“Coding is not just about the actual process itself,” said Pam Meier, Holy Trinity’s computer science teacher. “It is about the process — thinking through a problem and finding a way to solve it.”

In addition to the Hour of Code activities in her classes, Meier held two after-school sessions for anyone interested at the Upper School, as well as one session held at the Lower School.

Students, teachers and even Head of the Upper Campus, Nancy Giangrisostomi gathered in the computer lab to take part in the self-guided coding activities.

Everything from simple functions to game development took place in the computer lab during Holy Trinity’s sessions. Meier was on hand to offer support but students approached the activities in a self-guided fashion, choosing from coding modules based on age and experience.

Tenth grader Jens Sabbar is a student in Meier’s Computer Programming II class and spent his Hour of Code creating an iOS game.

“I’m just working on commands for this game,” he said, pointing to lines of code on his screen.

“Pretty easy.”

Eighth grader Sebastian Tirado had never tried coding before the event but was quickly learning the basics of creating functions.

“I was excited to come and try out coding because this is something I may want to do someday,” Tirado said. “I’d like to make video games.”

No matter what the industry, Meier says that understanding the basics of coding and programming is vital to all future career paths.

“Coding and computers are part of every industry,” she said. “It is not just technology or computer-related. Every student can benefit from learning these skills.” VV

New Year marks new fitness milestone for Manatee

“I think it’ll be really beneficial to see that a bunch of random high school students can make a difference,” said student Molly Howard said.

Now, they are talking to groups all over the state, from ROTC to the police to the National Guard. In the spring, they will go before a committee in Tallahassee. If the bill becomes Florida law, the VFW will take it to a national level.

“I didn’t think it would go this far, and it has,” Matos said. “If it doesn’t get passed, we should try in the future to work at it again.”

National program motivates local teens to public service

Teenagers are lazy? Not in this town. More than 200 students at Viera High School are working on major community service projects as part of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service program.

“It’s a nationally recognized group, and it’s amazing,” Susin said. He has been involved in the program for just a couple of years, but he took Eau Gallie High School to fourth place at the national level two years ago. They were the first Brevard county school to make it to nationals, and he plans to do it again with Viera High.

The Jefferson Awards recognizes individuals in the community, employees at participating workplaces, and students in their youth service initiatives. At Viera High, the students meet weekly to discuss and plan their projects.

Kyle Bishop, a student at Viera High and JROTC officer, is contacting ROTC programs throughout Florida to gain support for the bill with the help of his senior army instructor.

They have already achieved some of their goals, including cleaning out the Henegar Center’s costume room.

“It’s to get these kids motivated in the community, and to get the people who actually do something in the community an award,” Susin said. “Because we all know that those people who are doing that kind of stuff never get awarded. They just don’t.”

As Manatee Elementary students return to school, they will turn over something else besides a new leaf: the odometer on the Morning Mile program, which will surpass 30,000 miles since it started three years ago this month.

The activity, which boasts an impressive 60 percent student participation rate, was one of many reasons the school won the Brevard Public Schools 2013 Excellence in Physical Education Award, according to Manatee physical education coach Tabby Best. Fitness goes beyond the physical, she added.

“Getting active in the morning gets the students’ blood flowing and wakes up their brains so they start their school day ready to learn,” Best said.

Parent volunteers say they hope the workout benefits their own peers.

After walking the Manatee Morning Mile one day, a slightly out of breath but happy child approached parent volunteer chair Tish Calvert and told her how glad she was to take part.

Brevard Zoo will host a three-day special exhibit featuring impressive birds of prey 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day Jan. 18 through 20. The exhibit, called The Raptor Project, will feature 15 to 20 raptors from all over the world. Guests also will have a chance to see a few take flight and learn about the amazing birds from master falconer and wildlife rehabilitator Jonathan Wood.

Wood will host two shows each day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. inside the Nyami Nyami River Lodge. The exhibit is free with zoo admission.

Wood’s collection includes eagles, hawks, falcons and owls, representing every habitat on the planet, including the arctic, desert, rainforest, wetlands, prairie, woodlands and tundra.

Although many of his flock have permanent handicaps barring them from re-entry into the wild, these flaws are hard to detect. Today they have been tamed and trained as charming ambassadors of the species.

Wood travels the country bringing insight to audiences on the world of raptors.

When Dave Karner dreamed up the script for his short film, “The Killer Inside,” he had to find a local home where his crew could set up for a full day of shooting. Robert and Rosemary Lynn, both fans of the Space Coast United Filmmakers and Associates dedicated work in the area, welcomed them into their home.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, Karner and his crew arrived to take over the house along with three local actors. Also assisting in the shoot was Sue Dontell, a well-known film maker and president of Space Coast United Filmmakers and Associates and award winning producer/photographer

This was Karner’s first real foray into the short film arena.

“I am so excited,” he said. “We have an awesome crew and great actors.”

Karner can’t say enough about the SCUFA organization. “If it wasn’t for them, I would never have had this great opportunity,” he said.

“The Killer Inside” was scheduled to be edited and completed by Dec. 21 and will be submitted to the Melbourne Independent Film Festival for inclusion.

Tuscany House is helping hands away from home

When Trisha Mathis moved from Niagara Falls, N.Y. to Viera eight years ago, she did not know that her life would be taking a unique turn in the near future.

She and her husband Jason met in 2005. They purchased a home but later decided they needed a larger place for their growing family. So they put their home up for sale and bought a fourbedroom house in the popular Indigo Crossings subdivision in Viera.

When their home didn’t sell, they decided to rent out the new home. However, their home sold within another day and they had to move quickly. First, they lived with Mathis’ parents until the lease was up on the Indigo Crossing home. Then they made the decision to do something they had always wanted to do: open an independent assisted living facility that would house five residents in the new Indigo Crossings location.

Mathis, a trained physical therapist, and her husband quickly became licensed to open Tuscany House Assisted Living on Indigo Crossings Drive. As administrator and owner of the new facility, Mathis knew she would have her hands full but she was excited about it.

“We wanted to offer a place that had a home-like environment for just a few residents” she said. There are

three private rooms and one large double bedroom along with all the amenities of a large house. A private screened-in porch, modern kitchen, modern bathrooms, a large dining area and a family room with flatscreen TV are available to the residents.

“We have three CNAs who work here and someone is always here 24/7,” Mathis said. There is also a manager/CNA, Tisha Cordy, who has more than 25 years of experience in health care.

The residents enjoy outings such as shopping, restaurant visits, bingo and other activities.

Three hot meals are served a day and no one is rushed to get to the table at a certain time. They also have their laundry done, receive assistance with medications and transportation to and from

appointments. There is a doctor, a podiatrist and a hair stylist on call as needed.

“We are a family here,” Mathis added “We pride ourselves on offering quality and compassionate care. The dignity of our residents is very important.”

weeks that the adoption center has been open, we have been able to place 91 cats in loving homes,” said Mike Johnson, store manager, “and we are hoping to celebrate 100 cats adopted in the next day or two.”

The cats in the store come from the SPCA as well as from Brevard County Animal Services. Between Nov. 29 and Dec. 16, 70 adult cats and 33 kittens have been pulled from the county kill shelters so that they can be adopted at the mall location. The 100th cat adoption from the mall adoption center will be a great moment for this community,” Johnson said.

The SPCA Cat Adoption Center is open during mall hours throughout January, with the possibility of continuing store operations further into next year.

The adoption center is located on the west end of the mall, near JCPenney and beside Puppies Plus.

Faith and Hope for Little girls is a nonprofit organization run by Rockledge resident Wanda Schultz and Valerie Paul.

They distribute bald Barbie Dolls and cloth baby dolls to young children who are fighting cancer.

Paul came up with the idea of creating bald Barbies when her friend was diagnosed with stage-four ovarian cancer. Initially, she ordered five bald Barbies on eBay. Now she orders the heads, without hair, from various manufacturers, attaches them to the Barbie bodies and distributes them to young cancer patients.

The idea is that bald can be beautiful.

Juanita Barker, Paul’s 90-year-old grandmother,

contributes by sewing cloth baby dolls for younger children. Students from Edgewood Junior and Senior High School paint the faces on the dolls, giving each a unique personality.

Eric Hargreaves is a local firefighter/EMT. He lost his son Sean to cancer seven years ago. Since then, he has participated in fundraisers for cancer patients.

Hargreaves is a member of the Dragon Slayers Motorcycle Club. They organize fundraisers for all sorts of events.

“My life is like a country song,” he said. From losing his son to having his house burn down, he has experienced adversity. These events gave him the push he needed to help others.

fundraising projects such as Candlelighters of Brevard, the Wounded Warrior Project and the Childrens’ Burn Camp. The motorcycle club itself is dedicated to helping those in need, particularly cancer victims.

So far, 1,200 bald Barbies and 75 cloth baby dolls have been given away.

“There is always a need for people to help with this project,” Schultz said. “We also need donations of time and money.”

“We’re fighting cancer, one doll at a time,” Paul smiled.

“If we can make a child’s life easier while she fights this disease, it’s worth the effort.”

Trim down fat cats and round retrievers

Every year around this time, gyms across the country see a boost in attendance as people commit (or recommit, or re-re-commit) to sticking to their New Year’s resolution to be healthier.

Maybe now is a good time to take a moment to evaluate your pet’s health and fitness as well. In this two-part article, I’ll go over the basics of pet weight management.

A recent survey found that more than half of the dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Pets carrying extra pounds are prone to multiple health problems.

Overweight dogs, for example, are more prone to having arthritis due to the additional stress and strain on their bones and joints. Overweight cats have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than cats that are an appropriate weight. Diabetic cats frequently require owners to give expensive insulin injections twice a day.

Helping your pet slim down, if needed, can help them live happier, healthier lives. “How much should my pet weigh?� is a common question I receive from clients. While a scale can be useful for quantifying a pets weight, setting goals and checking progress, it’s often more helpful to use your eyes to assess a pet’s health status. The body condition score (BCS) is a system used by many veterinarians to assess if a pet is at his or her ideal weight. An example of the five-point scale (some veterinarians use a ninepoint scale) is available at vet.osu.edu/vmc/bodycondition-scoring-chart. For a more specific target,

Any excess calories are stored as fat. This fat is used at a later time when the calories used throughout the day exceed the amount taken in as food. This is known as a “negative energy balance.� A continuous negative energy balance is required for the body to use up the stored fat and lose weight. This negative energy balance is achieved by eating less (taking in fewer calories), being more active (burning more calories), or both.

The first step in weight management is to measure how much you’re feeding your pet.

He plays for Rockledge in the Space Coast Tennis League’s Super Senior division for men older than 65 each Tuesday and then takes on younger players each Friday in the over-50 division. He is the manager and coach for both teams.

“I’ve been playing non-stop tennis since 1970 and off and on before that,’’ said Bonnar, who grew up in Massachusetts and traces his lineage back to Gov. William Bradford and the pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Rock.

know the rules. I watch the pros to get pointers; that’s the kind of thing you should do. I’m not as strong as others, but you can do what the body allows you to do.

It might be a different game than it used to be, but you’ve still got to stay in shape.’’

Bonnar found that out the hard way about 2 1/2 years ago when he fell and had to undergo back surgery. Four screws and two titanium posts were placed in his back to relieve pressure on his spinal column after a disc was damaged. He was back on the tennis courts after a four-month recuperation.

“I used to be 188 pounds, but I was too heavy,’’ said Bonnar, who is 6 foot 1. “I’m down to 175 after the operation, and I feel a lot better in my legs, arms and knees.’’

Bonnar grew up in Newton, Mass., which is a suburb of Boston. He’s still proud that he had the opportunity during his junior year of high school to play baseball in a state championship event at Fenway Park, where his hero Ted Williams starred. Bonnar played both basketball and baseball for

The guide is just one more gift Corbeil made to the wetlands, the species that thrive there, and the people who love both, Behret said.

“Charlie sharing his images for free was a tremendous contribution. You don’t find that in the photography community at his expertise level.”

Robert Wicker is a close friend of the Corbeils and founding FOVW president. He and Behret worked closely with Corbeil as fellow volunteers with FOVW and the BRAVE program that coordinates thousands of county volunteers.

They are working privately, apart from their membership in either of those groups, with

Brevard County on the selection of naming opportunities.

“He was our No. 1 ambassador to the wetlands, and a great steward of them.

Not only could he talk about photography and help you with your shooting skills, he could also teach you about what was out there in nature,” Wicker said of the renowned Florida naturalist.

Current president FOVW Terry Mott is heading up coordination of the April Viera Wetlands Nature Festival.

She played a major role in expanding the one-day event to an entire weekend last year, with Charlie hosting popular tours and teaching nature photography. She said the festival and all FOVW events for the year will be dedicated to Corbeil.

“We will all miss Charlie so much” Mott said. “Through his brilliant photography and teachings, he inspired all of us to learn more about and appreciate the wildlife that lives in our own backyard.” .

Charlotte Corbeil reflected on her late husband’s life with a message to his fans and friends.

“His passion was nature, especially at the wetlands with its inhabitants. There, sunrises and sunsets were most comforting to him. Thank you all for remembering Charlie.”

Vets Driving Vets puts volunteers behind the wheel

For veterans who no longer drive or have no mode of transportation, getting to necessary medical appointments can feel impossible. A program launched in February hopes to change that through volunteer matching.

Vets Driving Vets is an initiative that matches up local volunteers with veterans that need dependable transportation for healthcare needs. It is just one of many programs organized

by Aging Matters in Brevard, which also heads up the county’s Meals on Wheels initiative and other programs for seniors.

More than 70 veterans of all ages have made use of the program, which currently has about 20 volunteer drivers.

The service is free for the veterans. Volunteers take on all of the expenses, like gas.

Jerilynn Brady is the veterans transportation coordinator and is a representative from Americorp Vista Volunteers.

She is in Brevard to get the program on its feet and then turn it over to local volunteers.

She said it is a great opportunity for veterans who want to volunteer, but do not have much time to commit.

“All the veterans must request their rides at least one week in advance,” she said. “This is a program that is completely tailored around the volunteer’s schedule.”

Quilters cruise for the stitch of it

Anita Kelly was 7 when she first started sewing in her native Denmark.

“I’ve always loved colorful fabric,” she said.

The chemical engineer came to Florida in 2000, when her husband transferred to Patrick Air Force Base.

She later learned about quilting and fell in love with the American tradition.

“As an engineer, I love the numbers behind quilting.”

Kelly enjoyed the craft and artistry so much, she opened Boutique 4 Quilters in West Melbourne. Friday morning sewing socials expanded into a Girls Night for quilters.

“But the most exciting thing,” Kelly said, “is our upcoming cruise. It’s a first for us. Quilters can come alone. We have other singles they can share a cabin with, or they can come with friends or their spouses. No one will be left out.”

According to Kelly, the cruise will depart Port Canaveral March 23, returning on March 30 on

Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

“We will have four projects for our quilters. They can choose two, and we provide all the materials. All they need to do is pack a bag for the cruise.”

Kelly and other qualified instructors will teach participants the projects, which range in skill level from beginner to advanced.

“Our kits have all you need.

We will provide scissors, fabric, thread, even Pfaff sewing machines. There will be one for each quilter.”

The cruise offers the usual excitement of a seven-day cruise to the Bahamas, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. This special quilting cruise will offer a pre-cruise quilting party, onboard parties for the group, a unique, embroidered quilt label and goody bags from sponsors.
