The creative team at Family Promise of Brevard hopes to take Viera Voice’s upcoming Scarecrow Stroll by a tornado of literary proportions when it seeks to recreate the twister that landed Dorothy and her pals in Oz. “The ’crow will be in the shape of a tornado and within it will be items such as the ruby red slippers, the Tin Man’s hat and the Cowardly Lion’s heart,” said Tara Pagliarini, the executive director of Family Promise of Brevard.

The “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” scarecrow theme was selected to complement the nonprofit’s major fundraiser, a March 1, 2019 5K run/walk that is all about the Emerald City. The run, which begins at the Church of Viera, has been embraced by the community.

New president sees fascinating future for Viera

There’s a new president at The Viera Company as Todd Pokrywa has taken the helm of the organization behind the planning and construction of Viera, the master planned community which is rated among the top 15 across the country.

Pokrywa replaces former president Steve Johnson, who had served in the position since 2005, according to the

company.

As he begins his tenure, which officially began Sept.

1, Pokrywa sat down with the Viera Voice to discuss a number of topics related to his new position, including what he sees for the future of the community.

That future, apparently, involves a lot of new growth as Pokrywa says the company has “somewhere between 20 and 30 years left of development activity

before the community’s built out depending upon the pace of the market.”

He added that they would “continue to develop south and then we will move to the west as well.”

Pokrywa says he defines success in his new position as “continuing to innovate” and “introducing new pieces to the puzzle that enhances our value and vibrancy as a mixed use community.”

One new piece to the puzzle envisioned could be the future addition of what Pokrywa calls the presence of a “post-secondary institution.”

“Education is essential and we have many components with the elementary schools, the charter school filling the near term the middle school gap, the high school but we don’t yet have within the community of Viera, a post-secondary presence,” Pokrywa said. “A lot of our competitor or counterpart master-planned communities do. (We’ve) long wanted to introduce that element and we still do; we have some flexibility as to where we might find the landing spot for that type of use if the right institution is interested but we believe that should be among the next steps that we take with respect to educational offerings in Viera.”

Pokrywa noted that the company is “developing a number of new neighborhoods south of Wickham Road” within the area called Addison Village.

“We will go from having two points of ingress and egress on the west side of Viera from I-95 to four, effectively doubling the number of access points into the community over the next few years,” Pokrywa said.

Another neighborhood named Bridgewater at the current southern terminus of Lake Andrew Drive, designed

to be home to those 55 years of age or older, is “actively underway and open for sales,” Pokrywa said.

Those neighborhoods are just part of the company’s residential development ambitions in the overall community.

Harvest Festival features stuffed animal clinic, pumpkin patch, Zucchini 500

While many children will bring their scarecrows to the Kids Mini-Crow Building Contest on Oct. 20 at the Avenue Viera, some will bring a not-so-healthy friend from home. Or, this friend might just want a little fresh air and to hear the bluegrass music of the Penny Creek Band.

Pediatrics in Brevard is sponsoring the Ted E. Bear Clinic for children to bring their Teddy Bear or other stuffed animals for their annual physical.

“The Ted E. Bear Clinic is just a fun way to introduce children to medical exams,’’ said Dr. Mary Ulrich of Pediatrics in Brevard. “If they understand it’s OK and safe to

examine the Teddy Bears, then they are less anxious when our pediatric providers examine them.’’

The exams also might prompt a child to become a doctor in the future.

“It’s fascinating to watch the children replicate a medical exam while being introduced to exam tools such as stethoscopes and otoscopes (for examining the ear canal),’’ Ulrich said. “Overall, the Ted E. Bear Clinic is a learning experience for the kids.”

There will be no shortage of doctors from Pediatrics in Brevard willing to perform the exams at the Harvest Festival.

“At Pediatrics in Brevard, we believe these types of community outreach events are a great way to introduce our practice to the community, while also visiting with existing pediatric patients,” Ulrich said.

“We participated in the Harvest Festival last year and had a great turnout for the Ted E. Bear Clinic. So, we wanted to participate again this year.

The kids absolutely love examining the Teddy Bears. It was fun watching them take the examinations so seriously.

The Teddy Bear exams give the kids a comfort level with the providers.”

After the Teddy Bears are examined, the children can take them to the pumpkin patch. Fresh Market is sponsoring the pumpkin patch, where children will be given pumpkins to decorate.

Kids Mini-Crow Building Contest promises to be competitive

The odds of winning the Kids Mini-Crow Building Contest in the seventh Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival on Oct. 20 got a little bit easier this year due to a wedding in Colorado.

Phoebe Pederson and Kahlan Pederson, who each won prizes last year in the

Kids Mini-Crow Building Contest, will attend their uncle’s wedding in Colorado the same weekend as the annual festival.

Phoebe’s Peeves was a Frankenstein robot, and Kahlan’s Spike was a dragon.

“I like how the children used their creativity and imagination to create something for the

community,’’ said Amy Pederson, the mother of the two children. “We actually did not plan to participate until after seeing all the big ’Crows in the Stroll.’’

Various businesses in Suntree, Viera and Rockledge will build their own ’Crows. Participants in the Scarecrow Stroll are asked to visit the businesses and log in the secret code for each Scarecrow on their ballot to win possible prizes.

The deadline to turn in ballots for the Stroll is Oct. 17.

Extra green felt from around the house in a previous project led to the creation of Spike, a dragon with spikes on his back.

Peeves was composed of several rolls of toilet paper and recycled material around the house.

Mini-Crows can be no taller than 3 feet and they must incorporate straw or hay. All Mini-Crows must be on site and ready for display at The Avenue Viera by 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 when the Harvest Festival begins.

There will be two age groups — 5 to 8 years old and 9 to 14 years old. The winner in each age group will be awarded $30. A second-place showing will

This will be the fourth time that the Kids Mini-Crow Building Contest has been held as part of the Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival.

“They like to take them home,’’ Blue said. “Their creativity is amazing, and the supplies they use are very resourceful and clever.

They might use a basketball for a head, and it’s amazing what they can do with a single cardboard box.’’

Penny Creek Band will keep feet tapping at the annual Harvest Festival

Fans of the Penny Creek Band and the Harvest Festival will have a special treat this year just before Halloween at The Avenue Viera.

“We’ve been working on a second CD,’’ said Susan Pounds, who plays the mandolin, bass and vocals for the popular bluegrass band, which will once again play at this year’s Harvest Festival scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at The Avenue Viera.

“We’re hoping to release it in the next two months. Our guitarist Chris Paganoni sings ‘No Words to Describe.’ He’s an excellent songwriter. You’ve either got the talent to write or you don’t. Some of us have the talent, and Chris is one step above.’’

Besides Pounds and Paganoni, other members of the Penny Creek Band include Fritz Kraemer, John Apfelthaler and Trevor Klutz.

Kraemer plays the mandolin and vocals, Apfelthaler plays the banjo, guitar and vocals, and Klutz plays the fiddle and mandolin.

Viera High School grad heading on 11-month, 11-country mission

Summer Conneen is passing up a trip to graduate school — ­ for now — for what she sees as a life-changing experience.

The 22-year-old Viera High School graduate is going on an 11-month, 11-country mission put on by Adventures in Missions, which is based out of Gainesville, Ga. “I’m ecstatic,” Conneen said. “I’m getting a little more nervous. I leave (on Oct. 5).

It’s definitely exciting. I have to somehow learn how to pack a backpack for a year.”

Conneen, who has been on other missions — including family missions — to places like Nicaragua, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and areas around the United States, said she chose this particular Christian-based quest in part because it will take her to places she has never been before.

The destinations include Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, Albania, Serbia, Romania, Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda.

“It’s to not only serve people in other countries and spread the word, but we also call it a heavy, hardcore discipleship program for us who are actually going on the race,” Conneen said. “We call ourselves Racers.

“So not only do we go out and serve people in all the different countries and do different ministries — children’s ministry, women’s ministry … we focus a lot on

a week. I can post videos and pictures and blogs about where we’re staying, what we’re seeing and who we’re ministering to, things like that.”

In one of her blog posts, she wrote about four reasons she’s not going on this mission.

Viera volleyball will host MCC in 12th annual Pink Game

It’s the date every Viera High School volleyball player looks forward to.

And this season, that date is Oct. 3.

That’s when the Hawks will host Melbourne Central Catholic in the 12th annual Pink Game. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national organization that raises money for breast cancer research.

The action will get under way at 5:15 p.m. with the freshman game, followed by the JV matchup at 6:15 and then the varsity contest which is set to begin at 7:15.

Players from both teams will wear pink uniforms and fans

are encouraged to wear pink shirts to the event.

“It is so fun,” Viera senior Shaine Horvath said. “We love having it at home. It’s always such a huge deal. We love it when a big crowd comes out.

“We talk about it for weeks in advance, and everyone comes in their pink shirts. It’s a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can get a big crowd out.”

Once again, this year’s matchup will feature basket giveaways and a serving contest for prizes. The gym’s concession stand also will be open.

Viera coach Sarah Wayne, who lost her aunt to breast cancer in 2013, estimated the event has raised close to $30,000 through the years.

In the B Flight, Bob Graham prevailed with Wilson Butler placing second. In the C Flight, Abe Leonard was victorious.

Bob David was second. In the D Flight, Jeff Kelley prevailed.

Bill Oakley was second.

On Sept. 13, VEMA put together four-man teams and used one, two or three low scores on the holes.

The team of Graham, Bob Urban, Joe Trombly and Bruce Schwanda won the event.

The team of Dennis Lamb, Ron Gonyea, Marty Gillette and Randy Sweaney finished second.

Hard work pays off for Holy Trinity runners

An influx of young talent and some hard work during the summer already is paying off in a big way for the Holy Trinity boys and girls cross country teams.

Sophomore Matthew Allen already has beaten his best time from last season by three minutes and eighth-grader Carly McNatt has the thirdfastest overall time in the state.

“Last year, I just went for it and ran every race like it was my last race,” McNatt said.

“I tried to embrace the pain as much as I could and tried my hardest at every race and worked hard.”

That work would result in a sixth-place finish at the Class 1A state meet last year for McNatt, who is looking to win it all this season and has shown every sign so far that she will be a legitimate contender for the gold.

There is plenty of talent behind McNatt, including the lone senior and team captain, Sasha Wiechecki Vergara, in the No. 2 spot. Braelyn Wahy is the Tigers’ No. 3 runner with the top remaining runners consisting of seventhgrader Ivy Knight, freshman Julia McNatt, eighth-grader Gabriela Shenbaum and seventh-grader Lani Watt.

“We’re looking for a topthree finish, which we think is very realistic, at state,” Tigers coach Anthony Sullivan said. “There’s some very good competition. Circle Christian, Oak Hall and Father Lopez are

going to be (good).

“Circle Christian should win it single-handedly. It’s more of a race for second place at this point. They’ve got about a minute gap on the rest of the state. It’s one of those (situations where) we’re all trying to shuffle for that last trophy.”

The Holy Trinity boys team, meanwhile, is hoping to have a few individual — and hopefully the entire team — qualify for the regional meet.

Freshman Jack Riggs is the No. 2 runner behind Allen with eighth-grader Ryan Henderson at No. 3. That group is followed by eighth-grader Austin Olivas, sophomore Gregory Bouyoucas, senior Hari Dandapani and senior team captain Max Pagan.

Allen’s best time this season is 20 minutes, 43 seconds and he’s hoping to continue dropping time with a goal of eventually getting under the 20-minute mark.

Last year, he did not qualify for regionals, but after a summer that included a team trip to a camp in North Carolina, he’s expecting much bigger things this season, not just for himself, but for his teammates as well.

“I’ve improved by three minutes from last year,” Allen said. “I’m ranked sixth right now in the district and I plan on making it to regionals.

“Hopefully, our team can do well enough so that we can all make it to regionals, which would be a big step forward for our team.” V V

Holy Trinity golf teams focused on winning district titles

The Holy Trinity boys and girls golf teams are both in a similar situation this season.

They both have a nice mixture of talented veterans and young players. And they’re both setting their sites on winning their respective district championships.

“Our main goal is always to win the district,” Holy Trinity boys coach Ron Benfield said.

“I think all of us in the district are about the same (although) Edgewood might be a little ahead of us right now.

“Most of our matches are right before the district

(tournament) so I’m hoping our scores will improve once we get closer to the district.”

Senior Daniel Muniz is the Tigers’ No. 1 player this season, followed by No. 2 Rahul Parsanna, a junior.

“Daniel’s capable of really scoring well, Rahul is, too,” Benfield said.

That duo is followed by freshman Cody Royston, seventh-grader Cash Hope and either Mitch McCullar (eighth grade), Roham Parsanna (seventh grade) or Joe Coston (sophomore) in the sixth spot.

“The main thing is, since all of us can’t hit it long, it’s

about consistency and being accurate with all of our shots,” Muniz said. “I think with this team, we’re pretty good with that. I think that’s what’s going to be the most important thing this year.”

While Holy Trinity’s girls feature a pair of seniors in the top two spots — Soy Choi and Grace Dance — there are no juniors on the team and a number of sophomores.

That list includes No. 3 Emma Baumgartner, No. 4 Ellen Choi and Avery Kenney in the No. 5 spot. The more miles the better for Viera cross country teams

The Viera High School boys and girls cross country teams have been putting in more miles this season … and it’s already paying off.

Led by sophomore Isabella Babilonia — who recently broke the school record — the Viera girls are ranked No. 1 in their region in Class 3A, while the boys team might be better than last year despite graduating three of its top five runners.

“We’ve got more depth now than we had, mostly because they’ve been running more mileage,” Hawks coach Scott Baker said of his boys team.

“Both teams have been running more mileage. That’s probably the No. 1 difference between the two years is the mileage. We’re running a lot more than we did last year.”

Junior Coby Karl already has shaved a minute off his best time from last year, running 17 minutes, 34 seconds, and is hoping to go even lower.

“I’m trying to break 17 this year,” he said. “I know that’s a big hop, but I’m down to improve a lot.”

Viera’s top three runners have been virtually interchangeable during the early part of the season with Karl, junior Bryan Baker and senior Shawn Coleman all

finishing in various orders.

Senior Andy Martinez, last year’s top runner, just recently returned from injury.

Add in juniors Navarre Solomon and Tyler Meilke and it’s easy to see why the Hawks are expecting to get back to the state meet this season.

That’s the same goal for the Viera girls team.

Babilonia, who set the school record with 19:30 (the previous record was 19:37), is only getting better and thanked Baker for helping her run times she didn’t think she’d be able to achieve.

“I was so shocked because I would have thought for sure there was someone who ran a time faster than mine,” she said of setting a new school mark.

“I’m just so stoked to see that I did that. I broke the school record as a sophomore.

That’s kind of insane.”

Sophomores Abigail Baker, Brooke Siviter, Elena Fentress and Alayna Thurner, along with freshman Danielle Contreras, are all part of a young core of runners that should make the Hawks contenders for years to come.

ranked eighth in the state in Class 3A after ranking No. 19 last season, are the favorites to repeat as district champs before moving on to challenge the state’s best.

“It’s a young team, but it’s a pretty experienced team,” Baker said. “Four or five of them ran at the state meet last year.”VV

Golf teams still have high expectations

The Viera High School boys and girls golf teams both find themselves in need of a new No. 1 player this season … but for completely different reasons.

While the boys team lost Calvin Sierota to graduation, the girls team is without top player Manon Donche-Gay, who is currently away from the team due to a family health situation.

There is a chance Donche-Gay could return to the team before the end of the season, but in the meantime, the Hawks are getting tremendous play and leadership from senior Mary Kate Smith and junior Briana Gabe.

“We’ve got a young team with some new girls,” Hawks coach Greg Ford said. “We have to find somebody to step in. And I’ll be perfectly honest, I think it’s made those two girls step up.

Their games … especially Mary Kate. Oh my gosh.

“If we can keep moving forward like that and I can develop some of these younger ones, then we’ll be OK. Are we going to be what we were with Manon? No. Can we make the state tournament? Yes, I fully believe we can.”

The Hawks, who also are going for their 11th consecutive district championship this season, have one other experienced player in senior Meslissa Luciani, who has been playing in the No. 3 spot.

The rest are newcomers such as freshmen Heart Gerosano and Anna Maria Tea, sophomores Alexa Baker and Ashley Armitage and another freshman, Katie Lathem.

While Viera has become known as a state powerhouse with two titles to its credit, the Hawks aren’t taking anything for granted.

“Our biggest goal is to make it to state,” Smith said. “We can’t contend for state unless we’re there.”

Not only are the Viera boys looking for a new No. 1, they also have a new coach in Gene Trent.

But despite all that, the expectations for the program haven’t changed.

“We can definitely get to regionals,” sophomore Sam Karman said. “We might be able to get to states.”

Karman and junior Douglas Gearhart have been the Hawks’ top two players so far this season with other players like Dylan Melby, Joe Malatino, Billy Barrett, Gage Guettler and Jacob Melby also contributing.

The Hawks also have six promising freshmen who already have shown by their strong play early in the season that they can help the program both now, and in the future.

“The kids are great,” Trent said. “I have 15 guys and every single one of them, they want to play and they want to practice.

A Viera High original â&#x20AC;&#x201D; sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been teaching there since the school opened in 2006 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly-Brand is now in her 22nd year of teaching.

Her husband, James Brand, also is a teacher at the school. And her family has a long history of being in education. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My grandmother was a reading teacher for 33 years,â&#x20AC;? Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly-Brand said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Back then, it was considered remedial reading. She taught for Department of Defense schools, so she taught over in England and Germany and then she came stateside. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I guess it runs in the family. My mom also taught college courses at the community college level in Las Vegas. Teachers are a big part of my family. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a third-generation teacher.â&#x20AC;?

Viera High principal Mike Alba commended Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ReillyBrand not only for her teaching chops, but for her ability to connect with her

students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mrs. O'Reilly-Brand is an exceptional educator,â&#x20AC;? Alba said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She believes that all students in her class can be successful. Students know that Mrs. O'Reilly-Brand genuinely cares about them and works hard to ensure each student receives the extra support necessary for their success.â&#x20AC;?

Because most of her students struggle to read when they first come to her class, Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly-Brand said the most fulfilling part of her job is having students come back during their sophomore, junior or senior years to tell her about the books theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now reading.

And, of course, to see them eventually graduate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an avid reader, so I love reading myself,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like trying to bring that joy of reading back to my students. So many of them lose that in the midpart of their elementary years. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when it hits and they start not liking reading at all. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to show them that it cannot only be useful, but enjoyable. I find it a big accomplishment when I have students at the end of the year say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This is the most Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever read.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;I find that more rewarding than, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey, I passed the endof-the-year test.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? New program helps struggling teens, young adults leaving foster care

For teens and young adults who are aging out of foster care, life can be tough.

Young adults who struggle from the repercussions of homelessness or human trafficking also can face a bleak future.

In Brevard County, a new program has evolved to fill the void in their lives at a vulnerable time.

LiftUp Young Lives, which launched in August, is a program in which Holy Trinity parish mentors and instructors hold bi-weekly classes and workshops on life skills, living skills, social skills, financial responsibility and much more.

According to its mission statement, LiftUp is designed to help young people realize their purpose and give them the tools they need to succeed in life.

"We are excited as we had five young people join us in our session that started on August 22, 2018,” Holy Trinity Deacon Stacey Westphal said.

LiftUp will have its first graduating class from Level One in December, with five young adults receiving a new laptop computer to assist them in everyday life. The participants in the first graduating class range in age from 16 to 26.

Upcoming fundraising

events for LiftUp include a golf tournament fundraiser Nov. 10 and a fall shopping spree Nov. 17.

The goal of the golf tournament, at the Majors Golf Club, is to have 60 golfers.

Sponsors are needed for each hole, with a fee of $100 per hole.

All levels of golfing skill are welcome to play.

The shopping spree will have a wide variety of vendors selling gift items as well as an indoor farmers market. The shopping spree is seeking vendors whose products will make great Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers. It is hoped that the vendors will donate 50 to 100 percent of the day's sales to LiftUp. Murder mystery dinner theatres also are being held several times a year. The first one, “Murder in Margaritaland,’’ was well attended. "(It) was great success, raising over $2,000" said Deacon Stacey Westphal, the co-director. "It was a Margaritaland setting, very tropical, not only scriptwise, but our entire Parish Hall was decorated to fit the theme, including live palm trees.”

Imposing resource officer protects everyone at Viera Charter School

If you plan on causing any trouble at Viera Charter School, you’d better think twice.

That’s because you’ll have to deal with Cpl. Colin Kearns — all 6 feet, 9 inches tall and 265 pounds of him.

To say that Kearns is an imposing figure is an understatement. And with the tattoos on both arms you get a very quick, first impression that this is one person you don’t want to mess around with.

“I’m really a very nice guy,” Kearns laughed. “I know I look big to the elementary and middle school students, but I’m not scary to them. I’m just a big officer here to protect the school.”

Kearns is a 1998 graduate of Rockledge High School and a 2005 graduate from the Florida Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in forensic psychology.

Following his graduation from Florida Tech, Kearns became a high school teacher at his alma mater — Rockledge — where he taught a variety of subjects for three years.

In December 2009, Kearns fulfilled a life-long dream and joined the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

He served for four years and eight months in the

G.A.M.E.O.V.E.R. (Gangs and Major Epidemic of Violence Enforcement Response) Task Force. The unit is a collaborative effort addressing criminal activity in Brevard County due to gangs.

It is a partnership between the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Cocoa Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Melbourne Police Department, Palm Bay Police Department, Rockledge Police Department, Titusville Police Department and Brevard/Seminole State Attorney’s Office and includes federal and state criminal justice partners from various disciplines such as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Florida Department of Corrections (Parole and Probation), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Department of Juvenile Justice and Central Florida’s Crime Line.

In August, Kearns became Viera Charter School’s resource officer and safety specialist. Joining the school as its resource officer was a “no brainer” for Kearns.

“I come from a family of teachers,” he said. “My wife is a teacher and I have two children in the fourth and seventh grades. It’s a great opportunity for me to combine my teaching with law enforcement in one place.”

routines include helping out with traffic in the morning and afternoon; walking the school’s perimeter; monitoring the hallways and lunch room, and meeting with students and teachers in the classroom.

“I’m super happy at what I’m doing,” he said. “I get the chance to teach students, teachers and staff about the importance of safety.”

In addition to those daily duties, Kearns holds monthly patrol meetings with students and teachers on a variety of safety topics.

“For example, I try to teach students on what they should do if a teacher faints or gets ill,” he said.

Kearns said Viera Charter School administrators, staff and teachers have gone “above and beyond” to make the school a very secure one for its students.

“I’m very impressed with what they have done here,” he said. “Parents should be very happy with the security systems and measures we have in place.”

Kearns said he has received “positive” feedback from parents about school safety.

“I’ve spoken at a couple of PTSO meetings and the reaction has been very positive.”

What has really impressed Kearns the most has been student reactions to his presence on campus. “Every

single day a student comes up to me and says thank you for your service,” he said. “It blew me away. I get high fives every day from students.”

Kearns said his first responsibility at the school is to protect the students.

“Considering what is going on in the world today and what has happened at many schools, my job is to make sure everyone is safe at the school.

“I am responsible for over 1,000 kids at the Viera Charter School,” he added.

“And I will do whatever it takes to protect then. I treat these kids like they are my own.”

Besides working for the Sheriff’s Office, Kearns

coaches basketball at Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge and will coach fifth and sixth graders at Viera Charter School.

Anime is a style of handdrawn and computer animation originating in, and commonly associated with, Japan. The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. It is often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes.

Katie Ballagh, a library assistant who started the teen department at the Suntree/ Viera Public Library, noticed several months ago that a lot of kids were interested in animation material.

“We started the anime club in April,” she said. “I noticed there was a steady amount of teens participating in anime.”

Ballagh said one of the online services the club uses is crunchyroll. Crunchyroll is an American distributor, publisher, licensing company

and international online community focused on video streaming East Asian media including anime, manga, drama, music, electronic entertainment and content.

One of the most popular anime programs is Gundam, Ballagh said. Gundam, also known as the Gundam Series, is a science fiction media franchise that features giant robots called mobile suits bearing the name Gundam.

The Gundam Series began April 7, 1979 as ”Mobile Suit Gundam,’’ a TV series that defined the real robot "mecha" anime genre by featuring giant robots in a militaristic setting. The popularity of the series and its merchandise spawned a franchise that includes a television series, films, manga, novels and video games.

Besides watching the Gundam Series, Ballagh said the kids like to read manga material. The term manga in Japan is a word used to refer to both comics and cartooning. It conforms to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. They have a long and complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art.

Four students who regularly attend the club are the children of Clare and Nicholas Saint Gabriel of Melbourne.

The children are Adelie, 12; River, 11; Duncan, 10, and Austin, 8.

“I love the club,” said Adelie, a student at McNair Middle School in Rockledge. “I get the chance to meet new people and to watch the latest anime programs.”

28 North Gastropub will offer fresh menu sensations

Local businessman Chris Conneen loves Brevard County. Just look at the name of his latest restaurant — 28 North Gastropub.

“The name is inspired by Brevard’s latitude line on the map. We want to be a local-minded business with locally grown products for our products and services. Our menu will be a fresh, farmto-table, chef-curated type of menu.’’

Conneen also owns Pizza Gallery & Grill, which will celebrate its 29th anniversary on Nov. 3.

28 North Gastropub, which is scheduled to open in December, will be next door to Pizza Gallery & Grill. The roomy location will have high ceilings, large windows and a wrap-around patio with the flexibility to expand during comfortable days since it will have garage-type doors on part of the layout.

“I want to give props to the Space Coast Economic Development Commission,’’ said the 51-year-old Conneen, who graduated from Melbourne High School in 1985. “Money stays locally.

Conneen plans to extend that philosophy to 28 North Gastropub whenever possible.

“We want to purchase our ingredients in Brevard,’’ said Conneen, who is married to Robin and has four daughters ranging in age from 16 to 29. “Farmers markets will play a role. We will try to find local farms, but they can only provide so much. It’s too hot sometimes or too cold sometimes.’’

Tap-beer aficionados will like 28 North Gastropub.

“We’re going to replace nationally known beers with beers produced in local breweries. This should have a ripple-effect impact. We want to keep that money within the county instead of having it go to places like Arizona, Milwaukee or St. Louis.’’

Hand-crafted cocktails also will be a popular item.

“We’ll have fresh fruits from local farms for those drinks,’’ Conneen said. “It’s not going to be something out of a jar.’’

As available ingredients change with the seasons, the

healthy, chef-curated menu will change monthly.

It’s really amazing. Part of the experience is to educate the guests and to have fun.’’

The plan is to have 28 North Gastropub open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday. On the weekends, there will be a brunch from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. before making the transition to the regular menu at 4 p.m. V V

Senger wins top PR award

Some of Brevard County’s top public relations professionals were honored Sept. 18 at the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association's annual Communicator of the Year Awards Banquet at the King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne.

The Space Coast chapter of FPRA is a tradition-rich organization, having been

in existence for more than 30 years, according to the organization’s website.

That tradition was only added to at the banquet as the organization handed out a number of awards, including Communicator of the Year, which was awarded to Health First as well as an award for PR Professional of the Year, which was given to Samantha Senger, who also currently serves as the organization’s

“At first, I was quite shocked. I wasn’t expecting it but I am quite honored to be receiving this award on behalf of the Florida Public Relations Association,” said Senger, who serves as assistant to the city manager and public relations specialist for the City of Cocoa.

“It’s an honor to be voted on to receive this award by my peers so I think that’s what is the true honor.”

Among the others awarded was Autumn Shrum, who serves as the marking director and public relations specialist for the King Center.

She received the President’s Award, given to an individual for “distinguished chapter service,” the organization said.

“I have tremendously enjoyed being part of FPRA this past year,” said Shrum, who served as FPRA’s vice president of communications in the past year and is its incoming events chair. “It’s a great group of professionals.

“It provides a great opportunity to create a new mixed-used environment in proximity to USSSA Space Coast Stadium,” Pokrywa said. “We’ve witnessed the increasing demand

for hotel room nights, for additional retail and restaurant opportunities so in that vicinity of the new interchange, proximate to Space Coast Stadium is the ideal environment to introduce those uses and do something special. Palm trees spruce up Viera roads

If you’ve driven on Stadium Parkway near the intersection with Judge Fran Jamieson Way recently, you’ve probably noticed some new additions in the median of the road.

Recently, more than 50 palm trees were planted by The Viera Company in an effort to spruce up the area.

“I think it was one of the unfinished pieces,” said Todd Pokrywa, president of the Viera Company. “Exiting off I-95 at Fiske Boulevard or the Viera Boulevard interchange when it’s finished will bring you through that section of roadway toward either

residential or commercial properties that we’re selling.

So the experience needs to be consistent with the rest of Viera, that high-quality finish that we’ve been dedicated to providing.”

Pokrywa added that The Viera Company will be funding new road construction coming up in the area as well.

“Over the course of the next six, eight weeks, we’re planning to kick off the widening of Viera Boulevard from where it currently transitions down to two lanes east of Murrell Road down to U.S. 1,” Pokrywa said.

“We’re trying to line up the schedule of that improvement,

so as closely as we can that we would be substantially complete when the new interchange opens.”

Their investment in the widening of a portion of Viera Boulevard comes after the recent total funding of widening projects for portions of Wickham Road near Murrell Road and for portions of Stadium Parkway from near Viera Boulevard to Fiske Boulevard in Rockledge. The company also contributed more than $12 million, or roughly two-thirds of the construction cost to help fund recently concluded construction work on Barnes Boulevard in Rockledge. VV

“We do not do appraisal work at the library event,” said Bob Mellor, ANA’s Florida representative. “We do not do any buying and selling either.

My outreach obligation is to provide assistance in helping people find out information about the coins, paper money, medals and tokens they have.”

Mellor said as few as five and as many as 20 people (the higher number is during the winter months when snowbirds arrive) attend the open forum.

“From newbies to experts, old and young, everyone is welcome,” Mellor said.

Founded in 1891, the ANA gained national prominence on May 9, 1912 when the association was granted a Federal Charter, signed by President William H. Taft.

An amendment to make the Charter permanent and allow for a larger Board of Governors was introduced in 1962 by Congressman Wilbur Mills and Sen. John L. McClellan, both of Arkansas.

This amendment was passed

by Congress and signed by President John F. Kennedy on April 10, 1962.

Today, the ANA has more than 25,000 members from around the world. There is a chapter in every U.S. state and its national headquarters is located in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“We have no set agenda at our meeting,” Mellor said. “It’s free flowing. We pick a topic to discuss. It could be about Colonial coins to modern or world coins. At our Sept. 25 meeting, our topic will be a book review about the early days of the U.S. Mint.”

Meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. and last until 7:30 p.m.

“Some of the people who attend bring their coins for ‘show and tell,’ ” Mellor said.

“We do our best to research items for people. We try not to get into valuation. We provide a venue for folks who have inherited or come into possession of coins an opportunity to find out more information.”

If someone is interested in getting a coin, paper money, medal or token appraised or to learn its value, Mellor said people can attend the monthly meeting of the South Brevard Coin Club. The club meets at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at the David Schechter Community Center at 1089 South Patrick Drive in Satellite Beach.

There also is a coin show held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Sunday of every month at the Azan Shriners Center at 1591 West Eau Gallie Blvd. in Melbourne.

ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival promises fun, comfortable day

Fans of outstanding artwork have something to look forward to as the annual ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival will be held Nov. 17 and 18 in the Eau Gallie Arts District.

One of the unique features of the art show is that it takes advantage of what is climatologically ideal weather along with the immense talent of its artists by being an “en plein air” show.

“ArtWorks was founded in 1996 as an en plein air show, an outdoor festival that features artists demonstrating their techniques — artists working,” said Sharon Dwyer, past president and exhibitor coordinator for the show in an email to the Viera Voice.

Dwyer said the festival was started more than two decades ago by Link Johnsten, a florist in Eau Gallie, who wanted to “establish an art festival that would educate people about what artists do and how art comes together.”

About 55 percent of the artists who display their work at the show are from Brevard County, Dwyer said. Most of the other artists come from elsewhere in the state.

She added that paintings, including oil, acrylic and water, are the most popular types of art at the festival.

There are other categories of art there, including jewelry, photography, clay and sculpture.

There will be all sorts of quality artists in those categories, including oil painter Michiel Bullock, who will participate in his fifth consecutive show, according to Dwyer.

“Oh, love it,” said Bullock of the show. “It’s one of my favorites. I do a lot of art shows and this is one of my favorites.”

Bullock said he received his first oil painting kit when he was around 7 years old. He started painting in earnest when he was “16, 17 years old” and added that his paintings take about three to five weeks each to complete.

Most artists I know cannot not paint. I have a painting on my easel seven days a week, all year-round. I’m constantly painting and it’s a great feeling once you’ve finished a painting. You feel like you’ve created something that no one else has.”

It’s perhaps due to that passion as well that he enjoys the en plein air facets of the show.

“I like it. What I do is I’ll set up an easel outside my booth and I’ll start painting and it’s amazing how it attracts the people who are at the festival,” Bullock said. “They come over and they’ll start asking questions, ‘how do you do this or ‘how do you do that’ or some of them will just stand back and watch and just observe what you’re doing.”

Bullock added that he feels no pressure when painting in front of an audience “because you’re doing something that you do every day.”

Theodore’s efforts made recycling a reality in Brevard Public Schools Theodore’s efforts made recycling a reality in schools When we relocated to Viera almost 10 years ago, recycling was not part of the daily routine in public schools.

Parents and PTOs in each school were voluntarily doing bits here and there to send less to landfills. That was until 2013.

That year, Brevard Public Schools (BPS) rolled out single-stream recycling district wide. BPS recognized the important role recycling plays in resource conservation and realized how much savings recycling would represent to its annual budget.

Since then, schools throughout the county have had access to recycling services. Not many people know about those behind that project.

Dana Theodore, the assistant superintendent of facilities services and a native of Pittsburgh who moved to Florida in 1980, always has been a champion of recycling.

He took on the challenge to create a program for BPS. In 2012, he hired Laura Kandiko to lead the recycling program.

Kandiko, an inspirational leader, tireless advocate for the environment and a creative and fun co-worker always happy to help, embraced the task and launched the program in all 82 Brevard County public schools. She has done a tremendous job. The program has been run successfully for the past five years with the help and support from custodians and other school staff, families and volunteers.

Theodore — whose team of 200 includes maintenance technicians, custodians, groundskeepers and professional staff — has recently retired. This project was just one of his many accomplishments during his 16 years with BPS. His other remarkable feats include: • Constructing five schools

and maintaining 12.8 million square feet of facilities to create a safe, comfortable and healthy learning environment for more than 70,000 students.

• Implementing a districtwide energy conservation program that included summer hours, a mandatory 76-degree thermostat setting and restrictions on building use.

• Reducing electricity expenditure from $15.3 million in 2008 to $11.5 million in 2017 — a 25-percent decrease that had a tremendous positive impact on staffing and programs.

• Organizing the BPS Facility Renewal Referendum and being instrumental in the Sales Surtax Initiative which will result in $200 million for facility renewal projects such as upgrading mechanical systems, improving security and enhancing IT. • Initiating an LED lighting conversion that reduces energy consumption by 50 percent in a five-year program.

• Pursuing U.S. EPA Energy Star certification to recognize energy efficiency performance in the top 25 percent for 50 of the 83 schools. That is the most in the state.

Theodore was appointed to the Brevard County Planning Commission and will carry on being an asset and an invaluable resource for the community. From what friends and co-workers shared with me, he will be golfing quite often.

SAIL offers range of interesting classes close to home

Seniors can set sail this fall by engaging in a new venture — right at a neighborhood church.

The adventure requires only two things — your mind and your body.

Senior Adventures in Learning (SAIL) of Melbourne is currently offering classes at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera.

There are many classes to choose from, and all are geared toward enrichment.

The fall session began Sept. 25 and runs for eight weeks. Participants are welcome to join the fall

session at any time.

“The genius of the program is that it is a ministry by and with older adults, rather than just a ministry to them,” said Brian Wade, the executive director.

“We offer classes in the fall and winter at local worship houses.”

SAIL is an interfaith organization serving senior adults 50 and older throughout Brevard County. Local churches and synagogues provide a campus for a variety of fun, stimulating classes for a nominal fee.

Yearning for intellectual stimulation? Try learning Spanish, studying Irish

history or joining a lecture series on current events and foreign affairs.

Learning and interacting with others is a proven way to fight off dementia and improve the mind.

Want to get your body in shape while having fun?

Try a Zumba or yoga class.

Exercise classes are a great way to stay fit and meet new friends.

Classes are held Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the fall term.

Wade’s enthusiasm for learning spurred him to take the helm from Beverly M. Wheeler, the previous SAIL director.

“We usually have about 200 participants in the fall and as many as 300 in the winter session,” Wade said. “And we are not affiliated with any church, so all are welcome.”

Past participants have enjoyed writing their memoirs, exercising and learning a new language.

The instructors for most classes are seniors who share valuable skills and experiences cultivated throughout their lives.

Participants set their own course, navigating new subjects or becoming

teachers in an area of expertise.

People of all faiths work together in SAIL to help older adults celebrate their knowledge and experience, sharing it with their peers.

The primary purpose of SAIL is to enrich the later years with opportunities for service, self-expression, meaningful work and close friendships.

Fall classes are held Tuesdays and Wednesdays at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 5655 Stadium Parkway in Viera.

The Wright Group offers critiques, tips for promising writers

If you’re looking for help in getting something published or would like someone to critique your writing, you might want to check out a writing group that meets at the Suntree/Viera Public Library.

Formed in June 2017, The Wright Group meets from 4 to 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the library’s conference room.

“Our first meeting was at the Fresh Market Grocery Store on Wickham Road,” said Lori Shepard, a library assistant at the Satellite Beach Public Library and coordinator of the writing group. “We bought sandwiches and drinks, and then ate and talked about what we wanted out of a writing group while sitting at the tables in the little cafe area in the front of the store.”

Besides Shepard, the other person attending that first meeting was Linda C. Wright.

Wright is a writer of fiction and personal essays with a sense of humor. She was the winner of the 2008 National Indie Excellence Award in the

humor category for her first novel, ‘‘One Clown Short.”

Wright also has had her essays appear in seven “Chicken Soup for the Soul’’ titles. Her short story “Trouble” was a 2018 finalist in the Royal Palm Literary Awards.

Wright is currently working on a full-length memoir, “A Bittersweet Goodnight,’’ about her 50-year relationship with her stepmother. She lives in Viera with her husband, Richard, and cockapoo, Skipper.

“Our group is really creative. We support each other, and give honest feedback,” Shepard said. “It

has been really helpful to have other people read our work and give us a fresh perspective and a critical (yet positive) eye.”

Shepard said she became interested in writing as a child and never focused on it until the current stage of her life.

She was a police sergeant with the Orlando Police Department for 20 years, and when she retired in 2008, renewed her interest in all things books.

“I have been working part time for the last eight years at several libraries, and I also volunteer with the Rolling Readers program to kids at local elementary schools,” she continued. “I have found a love for poetry — my first poem I wrote last year was submitted to several contests, but was not chosen. I recently wrote a new one and will submit it once again.”

The writing group formed after some members of the library’s Book Club expressed a desire to discuss and critique their own writings, Shepard said.

“We encourage other prospective writers to attend who are interested in bouncing around story ideas and would like honest

critiques of their work,” Shepard said.
