Mothers on frontline seek balance in COVID-19 fight

A trio of local elementary schools held We Miss You parades, where teachers and staff drove through neighborhoods near their respective schools in late March.

The first of these events took place March 27, when Manatee Elementary held a parade in and around neighborhoods in the vicinity of the school, which is located off Viera Boulevard.

“We had two parades, one on this side of (Interstate) 95 and one in the neighborhoods on the other side of 95 so we could hit just about all of our students,” said Shannon Daly, the school principal. “... We have such an amazing staff here in Manatee that they supported this here in a big way.”

As was the case in all three of the parades, teachers and staff rode in vehicles, at least some of which featured positive messages and school colors.

It’s rare to see faculty and staff interacting with VIERA MEANS students and parents on BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP a Sunday. That’s just what happened March 29 when representatives from Quest Elementary School, located on Trafford Drive in Viera, held its parade.

Charlie Corbeil’s legacy lives on each spring as children throughout Brevard County participate in the Charlie Corbeil Youth Art Competition.

There are three age categories — kindergarten through third grade, fourth grade through seventh grade and eighth grade through 12th grade — for painting, photography and poetry.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Colors of the Wild.’’

Corbeil’s widow, Charlotte, donated more than $500 for prize money.

Corbeil, who died in November 2013, was a nature photographer and one of the original volunteer rangers for the Viera Wetlands. He also was a Florida Master Naturalist. VV

Smith, Hooks Jr. weigh in on importance of spring football

From building relationships to showcasing how much a player has grown physically since the end of the previous season, spring football is a vital part of any high school program.

And for teams like the Viera Hawks and the Holy Trinity Tigers, spring football would have been incredibly essential — perhaps more than any in their recent past — toward building the team that we will see in the fall.

Well, that’s not going to happen now.

The FHSAA announced on April 20 that it was canceling all spring sports activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It was extremely important for us this spring because of wanting to get reps with these new guys, and with the new guys getting camaraderie,” said Holy Trinity coach Nate Hooks Jr., who has two new quarterbacks and a star wide receiver coming back from an injury that he was hoping to get

Austin is now close to 6-3 and weighs 180 pounds. He could be closer to 200 pounds by the fall.

Viera, Holy Trinity football players attract attention of college recruiters

BY CARL KOTALA The coronavirus might have shut down sports all across the country, but it certainly hasn’t stopped college football programs from recruiting high school players.

In just the past few months, Viera High School defensive tackle Jamari Lyons has received offers from schools such as Florida, Miami, Auburn, Penn State, West Virginia and Illinois.

“His ability to get off the football is extremely high,” Viera coach Derek Smith said.

“Plus, he’s got a large body with long arms. At 300 pounds, you don’t see that every day.”

Lyons isn’t the only Viera player to be getting some love by college recruiters.

Safety Zak Sedaros already had offers from Florida Tech and Ithaca when Army and Navy both made him an offer late last month.

Then there’s receiver Davis Mallinger, who recently committed to UCF. Holy Trinity’s Ja’Lon Hudgins has offers from William & Mary and Tusculum and could be in line for more come the fall when he transitions from quarterback to wide receiver.

The most highly-sought out recruit in the county is Holy Trinity wide receiver James BlackStrain. Ranked No. 193 in ESPN’s Junior 300, BlackStrain has more than 40 offers from schools such as North Carolina, Florida State, West Virginia, Penn State, USC and Mississippi State.

“They love the body,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “He’s 6-2 and some change with wide shoulders, long arms and big

hands. And he catches the ball.

He’s not a blazer, but they love his length, his hand size, his height and the wide shoulders.”

BlackStrain, who said he is 100 percent after missing last season with an injury, said the recruiting process never seems to stop and that at this point, it’s all about building relationships.

“I’m just thankful for Coach Hooks and Coach Cam (Matt Cammarata) for putting me in the position to have these many offers,” BlackStrain said.

While the coronavirus hasn’t stopped BlackStrain and others from getting offers — the Mississippi State offer came last month — it has prevented the wide receiver from making visits to schools such as USC and Penn State.

Mallinger, who intends to enroll early, will be the third receiver to play at UCF. “We’re the second-smallest school in the county that plays football, behind Merritt Island Christian. We’re 16th out of 17, but we’re right there with everyone in accomplishments.”VV

Tomczak, Duran’s only general manager, retires after 45-year career

David J. Tomczak, who has been with the Duran Golf Club since its inception in 2004, has retired after a 45-year career. in the golf business.

For Duran Golf Club General Manager David Tomczak, the marriage of building relationships with people and the game of golf always have seemed like the perfect fit.

“I love people. I love the game of golf,” he said.

“That’s the two things that constantly brought me to work every day and feeling passionate about what I do.”

Tomczak, who has been in the golf business for 45 years and at Duran since its inception in 2004, announced his retirement at the end of April.

“It’s a good time in my life,” said Tomczak, who turned 65 on April 26.

In addition to getting his own golf game back in order, Tomczak wants to spend more time with his grandchildren, meet with friends he hasn’t seen in years and do some philanthropic work.

Jeff Von Eschen, who also has been at Duran since 2004, will take over Tomczak’s role with the title of Senior Manager of Golf Operations.

Tomczak came to Brevard County in 1999 to serve as the general manager at Viera East. He said it was a “great honor” to be asked by The Viera Company to head up the project to turn what was once the Duda family’s thriving cattle ranch and sod farm into one of the area’s top golf facilities.

Working with the architect who designed the course, he oversaw the conception of the clubhouse and added his own touch.

“They gave me what I would call some great latitude to expand on things that I wanted to do that was going to set this facility apart from any other facility in the area, and literally in the state and even the country,” he said.

“That’s the Development Center that we built across the street. It’s got a driving range, encircled by the nine-hole, Par 3 course and it’s all lit for night use.

“It was kind of a dream I always had to see a facility built with that kind of additional asset. It truly separates us from any other golf facility.”

From helping introduce people to golf, to hosting national championship events, Tomczak has helped create memories not just for himself, but for others as well.

“I’ve had a good career,” Tomczak said. “I’m one of the most fortunate people in the golf industry, to have gone down the path I went. The Duda family entrusted me to help build this golf club.

“At the end of the day, (I’ll) be able to look back and say, ‘hey, I’m looking back at the people that I work with and to think about what’s gone on here and how many people we’ve made happy, or made their lives a little better’ … yeah, it was great.” VV

Open for business, but taking precautions during pandemic

BY CARL KOTALA Jerry McNaulty and the rest of the Duran Men’s Golf Association members have always followed the tradition of having players take off their hats and shake hands following a round.

Now, because of the coronavirus, they elbow bump instead.

“It’s a matter of understanding,” McNaulty said. “You understand what’s going on, so you adjust accordingly. “… We’ve made adjustments and the adjustments are working out. I haven’t heard any complaints.”

Elbow bumps aren’t the only precautions being taken at Duran, which is considered an essential business during the coronavirus pandemic.

The club has implemented a number of safety precautions to keep players safe.

Duran PGA head pro Matt Morrison said the club has gone to single cart riders and those carts are sanitized after every use.

The club also is promoting walking the 6½-mile course at a reduced rate of $25.

There also have been adjustments made at the bag drop area. Only one car can pull up at a time and none of the staff members will touch the golfer’s bags. It’s all selfservice.

Viera’s Lee named national semifinalist for U.S. Presidential Scholar award

When Viera High School senior Shannon Lee saw the title of the email that had just been sent to her, she became ecstatic.

After reading the first sentence, she opened the door to her room and screamed for her parents.

She even started dancing around.

“Semifinalist Notification” the email title read.

After becoming Viera High’s first student to win the Brevard County Public Schools and state competitions, Lee is now a national semifinalist in the 2020 United States Presidential Scholars program.

The budding architect is one of 621 national semifinal candidates, chosen out of a pool of nearly 5,600 high school seniors.

Up to 161 students will be named U.S. Presidential Scholars this month. All scholars will be invited to Washington D.C. in June for the National Recognition Program that will culminate in the presentation of the Presidential Scholar Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.

“It would mean the world to me if I was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar,” Lee wrote in an email. “I have been working

extremely hard in my academics and in our community my whole life, and this would just be the cherry on top. Even getting this far in the Scholar Program has motivated me beyond belief to continue on and reach for my goals.

Established in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program spotlights the academic achievement of outstanding graduating high school seniors. Candidates are evaluated on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities and the quality and content of six essays the students were required to write.

Lee, who has a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.5 weighted GPA, wrote an essay about the characteristics of her family that she values the most. She also wrote about the teacher she admires most — Viera High’s Carrie Humphrys, who also is the school’s CTE Department Chair.

She plans to attend the University of Florida in the fall and major in architecture.

But before she goes, hopefully, she’ll get to dance around her room one more time.

TIPS from the TOP Space Coast leaders offer advice to graduating seniors

BY ERNEST ARICO Although the coronavirus pandemic put a damper on high school graduation ceremonies this month, thousands of high school seniors across Brevard County will graduate and receive their high school diplomas.

If your son or daughter is graduating from high school this school year, you’ll know how bittersweet this milestone is. All the sacrifices you made through the years — driving your kids back and forth to school, athletic practices and games, clubs, band, theater and, most recently, helping them with their online homework and assignments during the stayat-home order because of the coronavirus pandemic. You name it. You did it all.

But what about advice for your children going to college? How about the military? What if he or she decides to join the workforce? What words of wisdom do our graduates need to hear that will influence and encourage them to make the most out of the next phase of their lives?

There are many words of wisdom that are available for parents to give to their children. To help out, the

Viera Voice asked some of Brevard’s top religious, political, military, business and community leaders for some words of wisdom they would pass along to this year’s graduating seniors.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey “First and foremost, congratulations on this amazing accomplishment and milestone in your life. As you leave this chapter behind you, I encourage you to focus immediately on furthering your education as you have the remainder of your life to find your career and do the amazing things you will enjoy doing. Additionally, if I could wish only one thing for each of you, it would be to have the blessing I feel in having a career that I love.

For almost 40 years I have been blessed to wake up every morning and be excited about going to work. The truth is that if you love your

job you never actually go to work. Instead, you go each day to a place you love, you enjoy and where you feel a sense of accomplishment. My last piece of advice to our graduating seniors and future leaders is to always love your country and strive to be the most patriotic person in America. Never forget those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms and never forget that the United States Constitution is what makes us the greatest nation in the world.”

McDonald’s offers free meals to first responders, health care workers

BY CHRIS BONANNO McDonald’s restaurants across the country are offering free meals to first responders and health care workers from April 22 through May 5.

Among the establishments participating in the plan is the Suntree McDonald’s, located off Wickham Road near Jordan Blass Drive in Suntree.

"My goal is to provide one meal to every first responder or health care provider in our community," said Michelle Rodriguez, the owner of the restaurant. “I know McDonald’s is expecting to give away millions

As part of the plan, first responders and health care workers can receive either a breakfast or lunch/dinner meal.

The breakfast meal, Rodriguez said, consists of the choice of an Egg McMuffin, Chicken McGriddle or a bacon egg and cheese biscuit along with hash browns along with the choice of a soft drink, tea or coffee drip.

The lunch/dinner option features the choice of a double cheeseburger, sixpiece chicken nuggets or filet o’ fish along with a drink and a small order of French fries.

To be eligible, Rodriguez also said that prospective recipients must show their work badge, ID or be in uniform. Each recipient is only eligible for one meal at the establishment for the duration of the offer.

From a personal perspective, Rodriguez said she was proud to be able to serve those who are helping the community.

"I feel extremely blessed and honor to be in the position to be able to support those individuals that are risking their lives every day to protect our well-being during these pandemic," said Rodriguez.

Viera Charter takes learning to the next level

BY KAILA ZURAWIECKI Children at Viera Charter School started back to school the day after spring break Tuesday, March 24, greeted by their teacher’s face on a computer screen, and the smiles of their fellow classmates.

Students at traditional Brevard Public Schools started nearly a week later on Monday March 30.

“I just want to say thank you to Charter School Associates, VCS administration and the teachers for working so hard to get our children learning again,” parent Elizabeth Logan said. “I know most of (them) gave up time over spring break to take calls and strategize. Having these classes live (and recorded for those who can’t attend during the live times) is so important for our kiddos. To be able to actually see and hear their teachers and classmates during this chaotic time is invaluable. I could cry just thinking about it. Thank you for bringing a tiny sense of normalcy for them.’’

The school’s educational technology manager, Saxon Boucher, remains at school addressing any technology obstacle teachers or parents might have, and distributing laptops so that all students will have a station of their own for the duration of time they must learn from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. present new material to my students. I do a lot of handson and collaborative lessons in my classroom. Since I cannot teach this way online, I have had to adjust my methods. I miss being in the classroom with my students, so I am trying to incorporate a ‘morning meeting’ routine into each of my live video lessons.

A Viera High School student was one of four Brevard County students to be awarded the first batch of 2020 National Merit Scholars.

Kathryn A. Hund, sponsored

by Northrop Grumman, was one of nearly 1,000 students nationwide to receive the corporate-sponsored scholarship, funded by businesses across the U.S. The awards provide stipends of between $1,000 and $10,000, with most renewable annually for up to four years of college undergraduate study.

Hund was selected from the pool of finalists for the National Merit Scholarship competition that met the criteria of their corporate sponsors, which could include children of company employees, community residents or pursuing careers in the sponsor's industry.

National Merit candidates are chosen based on how they perform on the Preliminary SAT, which tests reading, writing and math, during their junior year of high school.

The winners of the National Merit $2,500 scholarships and collegesponsored scholarships will be announced between this month and July. VV

Hospitality Life offers free meals to unemployed food, beverage workers

BY ERNEST ARICO A non-profit organization is providing free meals to the more than 10,000 Brevard County unemployed food and beverage workers during this coronavirus pandemic.

Hospitality Life was cofounded in 2016 by Chris Conneen, owner of the Pizza Gallery Grill and 28 North in The Avenue Viera, and Buz Underill, owner of Squid Lips Grill in Melbourne.

The pair have a passion for people and the restaurant industry with a purpose to provide life-giving resources to the operators and employees of the hospitality industry.

If you have been laid off or furloughed because

of COVID-19 and want to receive a free meal through the organization’s Feed the Need program, qualifications include proof of Brevard County residency (drivers’ license or government identification); pay stub to verify service industry employment (your name and the name of your employer are needed) and a valid email address.

Once you’ve completed the form, you will receive a confirmation email. Forms must be submitted by noon for same-day pickup between 2 and 5 p.m. Requests are limited to one per day. You then can select from the following locations to get your meal:

• Pizza Gallery and Grill, The Avenue Viera • Pappagallos, Satellite Beach • PizzaVola eateries in Cocoa Beach, Indian Harbor Beach and West Melbourne • Aunt Louise’s Pizzeria in Sebastian “We would not be able to do this without the support and donations from our community,” Conneen said.

One Feed the Need donation — a $2,500 check from The Viera Company — will help feed 1,250 people, Conneen said. “Everyone is doing amazing work.”

Since the government’s stay-at-home order in March, the group has distributed

parents should be very direct with their children.

“The tone should be very straight forward, needs to be very factual,” Lewis said.

Lewis also advocates for a team mindset, as she’d like to see parents let their children know that “we’re going to get through this together.”

From an educational standpoint, Lewis notes that it is important to maintain a routine much in the way their children’s schools do as learning has shifted from inside the classroom to online.

To that end, Lewis said that a good idea is to have consistency with respect to where learning takes place in the home.

“They need to pick an area in their home, something very similar to where a kid would have like a desk in a school building, create a space for that student and have them contribute to that space,” Lewis said.

Further, she notes that students eating balanced meals and getting a lot of sleep is key. Lewis also said that parents should monitor their children’s TV and social media time.

But she also advocates for breaks during the day to give children some enjoyment too, which includes time correspondence with peers.

“I do like the fact that I am seeing, in my neighborhood,” Lewis said. “… Kids are now more active, you see them taking breaks, you may see them outside on their bicycles.”

Lewis also noted that psychologists are assigned to each school to help any students that are going through a tough time.

Schools' psychologist offers tips to parents in challenging times

BY CHRIS BONANNO The COVID-19 outbreak has produced challenging circumstances for everyone.

But perhaps one great challenge is that which parents face as they attempt to keep their students on track from an education perspective while also, in many cases, having to work from home.

According to Paula M. Lewis, Brevard County Public Schools’ assistant director of psychological services, one of the biggest things parents can do to help their students is to simply remain calm.

“I think first off they need to remain very calm and be reassuring when talking to their child or student,” Lewis said. “… You need to make sure that you're calm 'cause kids they look toward us, the adults, and they pretty much model what we model.”

Lewis also believes that

“We all love the hospitality we receive when dining at a fancy restaurant, staying at a nice hotel or having cocktails at our favorite bar. What most don’t know is how crazy things are behind the scenes: fast paced, high stress, long hours, late nights, lots of partying, then wake up and do it again,” Conneen wrote on the groups’s website.

Despite circumstances, Brevard online learning progressing smoothly

BY CHRIS BONANNO The end of the 20192020 school year obviously hasn’t gone as anyone would have wanted it to, but those connected with Brevard Public Schools appear to be making the best of a difficult situation.

According to Brevard Public Schools assistant superintendent Matt Reed, more than 60,000 students are logging online countywide each day, which he called “pretty close” to normal attendance.

“One thing that we’ve noticed is that at least onethird of all of our students are logging on to learn after 4 o’clock in the afternoon and learning all the way up until 9 o’clock in the evening,” Reed said.

Viera-Suntree area principals indicated that while there has been a transitional period and some difficulties have emerged, overall things have gone relatively smoothly for students.

“Online learning has brought some challenges, but I am so proud of the way our staff has stepped up to these challenges and found solutions collaboratively,” Viera High School Principal Sarah Robinson said in an e-mail to the Viera Voice. “One challenge is ensuring that we are connecting with all students and that all students are making progress.

“In the classroom, it is easy to see if a student isn’t engaging,” Robinson added. “Online, this is more challenging to see and to ensure that we are reaching all students. Our

Students have obviously had to deal with a dramatic transition from normal schooling, though Jordan Spira, a senior at Viera High School, noted there have been positive aspects to online learning as she prepares to go to college.

“It gives me my time back by not having to sit in class

for hours without actually accomplishing any work,” Spira said in an e-mail to the Viera Voice. “My daily schedule has become extremely flexible and virtual learning has really allowed me to format my academics around my other goals in life and has given me much more time to work on my goals un-associated with Viera High, like figuring out logistics for college (I will attend UF in the fall, hopefully in person!) and getting to know all kinds of new friends who will, too, soon be living in Gainesville.”

As Manatee Elementary School Principal Shannon Daly alluded to, it hasn’t just been a transition for students and teachers.

Bicycle sales, repairs on the rise since outbreak of coronavirus

Sports and social exercise, as we know them, are over. Bluewater Creative Group moves to new location

The company that publishes the Viera Voice, Senior Life, the Boomer Guide and the Viera Wetlands Birding Guide moved its headquarters to a larger office space near the Design Center of Viera Builders and State Farm offices at 7350 Shoppes Drive, Suite 102. The new location also is near the Walmart Shopping Center.

Bluewater Creative Group is a woman-owned business that was established in 1997 in Brevard County. Its old location was at 7630 North Wickham Road, Suite 105, in Suntree.

The company’s chief executive officer is Jill Blue and its office manager is Sylvia Montes.

The company began operating out of its new location on April 13.

The Viera Voice currently prints 24,000 copies monthly and is direct mailed to more than 18,500 households in Suntree, Viera and Rockledge with more than 5,500 copies distributed free of charge in Central Brevard.

Tigers and humans

Mini Fact:

People are the reason tigers are endangered.

Humans have caused trouble for tigers in three ways: • killing of tigers • overhunting of prey • habitat loss or habitat breakup

Killing tigers: Sometimes people kill tigers because they are afraid or because the tigers are eating farm animals.

But the biggest reason people kill tigers is to get their body parts to sell. Many people in Asia believe eating tiger parts will give them some of the tiger’s power. China is the largest market for tiger parts today.

Poachers, or people who hunt illegally, kill tigers to make a profit.

Tigers don’t purr, but they make a kind of chuffing sound in their throats when they are happy.

If you were going to pick one of the most magnificent animals on Earth, what would you choose? The tiger would be many people’s top choice.

In the last century, tigers have suffered a sharp drop in numbers. Today there are fewer than 3,900 tigers outside zoos. One hundred years ago, there were about 100,000.

There once were nine subspecies, or types, of tigers.

Three of those types are already extinct.

Awesome power The tiger is the biggest cat in the world. Some male Siberian tigers can weigh as much as 570 pounds.

They can stretch from 7 to 12 feet long.

It is the only big cat with stripes. The stripes help the tiger blend into forests and tall grasses. It hides in the vegetation, stalking its prey until it gets close enough to pounce.

Tigers have powerful teeth and claws. An adult tiger can kill an animal four times bigger than itself.

Hunting habits Tigers need to eat an amount of meat equal to

about one deer a week. If there is a lot of prey in an area, tigers have smaller home ranges. For example, in some reserves in India, a tiger’s home range can be as small as 20 square miles.

But in areas where prey is scarce, such as in the Russian Far East, tigers need much more space. One tiger may claim almost 800 square miles of land for itself.

Solitary animals Each tiger has its own territory. It hunts alone.

Tigers come together to mate, and then the male leaves.

The mom cares for the cubs on her own. A mother tiger may have one to five cubs per litter, but often all but one or two die.

Cubs stay with their mom for about two years.

Tigers keep away from one another’s territory. But there are bigger home ranges where tigers might meet up as they hunt.

Tigers mark their territory by spraying urine. They also have scent glands in their faces and feet. They rub their faces against trees to mark their area and let other tigers know where they are.

Overhunting prey: People eat the same

foods tigers eat, such as deer and wild pigs, or boar. As people have spread into the tigers’ habitat, they have killed most of the tigers’ food for themselves.

Then, hungry tigers have eaten cows and other livestock and scared people.

Habitat loss: People have destroyed much

of the tigers’ historical habitat. They have cut down forests and constructed buildings within tiger habitat.

Give your fertilizer a summer vacation, help the lagoon

Even with the current COVID issues, we can still relate to the joys of a summer vacation.

The Indian River Lagoon will thank you if you give your fertilizer a vacation this summer. In fact, Brevard County regulations prohibit spreading fertilizer on lawns and yards from June 1 to Sept. 30. The fine can be up to $500.

With frequent summer rain, fertilizer spread during the summer is more likely to wash into the lagoon. That causes more algal blooms than vegetation growth.

Before the regulation was passed, more than 127,000 pounds of nitrogen and 12,000 pounds of phosphorous nutrients entered the waters each year.

With the regulations in 2014, nitrogen dropped by 36 percent and phosphorous by 74 percent. By ensuring that lawn care companies comply, we’ll even do better.

In addition to banning spreading from June to the end of September, the ordinance specifies that only fertilizers with zero phosphorous and at least 50 percent slow release nitrogen are allowed in Brevard County. Also, avoid fertilizing within 15 feet of water bodies.

Why? Because these nutrients contribute to algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon. So, we need to be sparing. Most of Brevard’s soils already are rich in phosphorous (it is actually mined nearby).
