The beautiful multimillion dollar, 9,000-squarefoot recreational facility will offer residents of the Addison Village community resort-like amenities.

Eva M. Rey, the director of community management, amenities and communications for The Viera Company, said the facility is located at the

corner of Stadium Parkway and Addison Drive (8150 Stadium Parkway).

Rey said the club contains an indoor basketball court that is complemented by several multi-use meeting rooms and a spacious, social area in the middle of the facility called the club room.

Outdoors, residents will find six tennis courts, two pickleball courts, two bocce ball courts and an

immaculate croquet lawn.

There are two, very large family-style resort pools.

One pool has a splash pad and a large bucket that dumps water, while the second pool holds 180,000 gallons of water that offers four lanes for swimming laps. There also is an abundance of green space

Petty's Meat Market in Suntree to close

BY ERNEST ARICO One of the most popular meat markets is closing its doors later this month.

Petty’s Meat Market at 6115 N. Wickham Road will close by mid-January, owner Leigh Pettigrew said.

The Pettigrew family sold their stores because they wanted to spend more quality time with friends and family.

Leigh Pettigrew has operated the Suntree store for 24 years, while her brother Jay has managed the Babcock Street store in Melbourne for 44 years. Both stores were sold to Southeast Petro Distributors Inc. Only the Babcock Street store will remain open with the new owners.

“It’s been 24 wonderful years,” Leigh Pettigrew said. “I have fondest memories of this place.

We have amazing customers. I thank them all and I will miss them.”

Of the 20 store employees, Pettigrew said some will retire and

some will relocate to the Babcock Street store. “It’s been heartbreaking,” she said. “We’ve had such an outpouring of phone calls, people stopping by the store and emails.”

Bruce Kwitny of Suntree said he will miss the store.

“I’ve been coming here for 20 years and I don’t know where I’m going to go for my dinners,” he said. “I’ve been coming here at least two days a week because they cook all my prepared dishes.”

Customer Pat Smith, who commutes from Cocoa Beach to shop in the Suntree store, said she feels terrible about the closing.

“I drive all the way here because I love the personalization of the employees and the quality of the food,” she said.

Pettigrew said the best part of the store is its employees.

“We have really special employees,” she said.

“They are knowledgeable and are sincerely caring and compassionate with our customers.”V V

Improved team chemistry gives Holy Trinity teams reason for hope

Ask members of the Holy Trinity boys and girls basketball teams where they have gotten better this season and you’ll get a similar response.

“We’re playing as a team more,” senior guard Antwan Freeman said. “I feel like we have more chemistry.”

Alinah Sarratt, an eighthgrade guard on the girls team, has noticed the same thing.

“It was a little bit more diverse last year, a little bit more on our own,” she said.

“We work more as a team

this year.”

That improved teamwork has led to a strong start for both teams.

The boys were off to a 5-1 start, including a thrilling 76-74 overtime victory against rival Melbourne Central Catholic.

“We’ve got a lot of seniors this year and a lot of those guys are trying to fill spots that they didn’t play last year,” Holy Trinity boys coach Steve Henderson said.

“We’re really trying to figure out who we are. We’ve got a new offense. We’ve got some new kids playing different positions.

Freeman, who hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to beat MCC, has certainly thrived in his increased role. So have seniors Javaris Johnson and Davarion Marvine. The Tigers also have gotten some strong play from sophomore Theo Mansell and junior newcomer Demetrius Robinson among others.

The Tigers and Hustlers likely will meet again in the district finals, and if their first meeting was any indication, it should be one heck of a matchup.

Likewise, the potential is there for a Holy TrinityMCC matchup on the girls side, even though the Tigers have a very young team with only two seniors — Jordan Blair and Haley Forde — and junior Emma Bishop.

With Blair still waiting to make her season debut after recovering from an offseason knee injury and Forde getting back into the lineup after hurting her ankle, the Tigers have had to lean heavily on a group that includes Sarratt, freshman

The group has been working on improving communication on the floor, and as evidenced by an early-season victory against a previously undefeated Wade Christian Academy team. The Tigers can be dangerous when they can pressure their opponents

and get their offense going as they did on that night.

If Holy Trinity can keep improving throughout the season, it could lead to quite an interesting postseason run for the Tigers.

“This year, we’re young, but we’ve got some talent,” Holy Trinity girls coach Jay Castillo said. “The future is really bright. We have mostly sophomores and freshmen.” V V

He is Viera’s third girls basketball coach in as many years.

“My philosophy is to make sure we always have team unity and a desire to compete,” Carmer said. “I want every player to have that inner desire that on every possession, every drill, you try to win, you try to beat the opponent or beat the drill so you make yourself better.

“If you’re competing your best against the best from that person across from, it pushes you both to new heights.”

Led by co-captains Jaeda Stewart and Casi Ramirez along with Sofia Smith, Tatiana Stevens, Morgan Mordas and Jacquelin Castro, the Hawks were off to a 7-3 start and enjoy playing for Carmer.

Viera High set to induct third Hall of Fame class Jan. 10

BY CARL KOTALA The Viera Hawks have had a number of quality athletes and coaches prosper in their athletic programs through the years.

And once again, they’re going to celebrate them.

The third annual Viera High Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 10 in the school’s auditorium.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the school.

The cost is $20 for the entire event, which begins at 6 p.m.

It includes dinner. It’s $10 for just the induction ceremony, which is set to start at 7.

Here is a look at this year’s inductees: Kevin Mall — Football/ Track and Field A 2012 graduate, Mall became the first Viera football player to receive a Division I scholarship when he signed with Furman University. A standout tight end/defensive end/linebacker, he led the team in tackles and was the FACA Division 7A, District 11 Player of the Year despite sustaining a season-ending injury in the eighth game.

Kevin Mall was the first Viera High School football player to receive a Division I scholarship.

In track and field, Mall won a district, Cape Coast Conference and regional championship in the shot put.

He was All-State as a junior and finished among the top 10 as a senior despite wearing a cast on his broken leg.

After playing tight end at Furman for four years, Mall earned a degree in accounting. He recently completed U.S. Air Force pilot training and is serving as a

Prestigious junior golf tour coming to Brevard County

BY CARL KOTALA Two down, one to go.

And the last one is a biggie.

Duran Golf Club’s Director of Instruction Justin Blazer announced the U.S. Kids Golf Local Tour is coming to the Space Coast in 2020 with six events to be hosted by Brevard County courses.

The events are expected to provide another boon for junior golf in the area. Instead of having to drive to Orlando, Jacksonville or West Palm Beach to play in a tournament, children ranging in age from 5 to 14 will get a chance to compete locally.

It’s all part of the goal to put Space Coast junior golf on the map that Blazer laid out when he first arrived at Duran in 2014. It involved bringing three national initiatives to Brevard County.

The PGA Junior League, which plays host to more than 40 kids, was the first national program to come to Duran.

The Drive, Chip & Putt event was the second.

“The last piece of the puzzle was having an established tour for golfers who want to play in a tournament setting individually,” Blazer said.

“And that third one was U.S. Kids Golf (which gives) kids the opportunity to compete without driving an hour-anda-half away.

“I think it’s a big deal from the sense that now we have an established local junior golf tour. The impacts are

going to be tremendous.”

The first tournament is set for March 1 at Duran with subsequent events on March 8, April 19 and 26 and May 3 and 17. Locations for the remaining events were not available at press time, but local golf courses taking part include Suntree, Rockledge and Viera East.

Players can sign up at uskidsgolf.com and search for the Space Coast Tour. The cost is approximately $37 for nine-hole players (boys 5 to 10, girls 6 to 11) and $50 for 18-hole players (boys 11 to 14, girls 12 to 14).

Blazer believes there are at least three major impacts having the U.S. Kids Tour come to Brevard County and what impact it can have on local players.

For one, it will allow children to play in a competitive environment at an early age and advance their game to higher levels.

Additionally, all players at U.S. Kids Golf events are encouraged to have caddies — usually a parent — to not only help them navigate the course, but also to promote family interaction. All players 8 and younger must have a caddie at all times.

“I think the impact on the younger golfers, giving them an opportunity to compete earlier and having a taste of that is good,” Blazer said.

“It would be like us having Little League practice, but

The third potential impact comes from the opportunities U.S. Kids Golf provides to take their games all over the country. The top five finishers in each age group will receive Priority Status which can bring invitations to play in state and regional

invitational tournaments, international championships and, the big one — the world championship, held each year in Pinehurst.

“It’s the best-of-the-best for these age groups, giving them that competitive drive,” Blazer said of U.S. Kids Golf. “Every year, I have six to 12 students that qualify for the U.S. Kids World Championships and it’s a big deal for them.

The new campus of Pinecrest Academy, which will serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade, is currently under construction near the intersection of Stadium Parkway and Trasona Drive. It plans to officially open in August 2020.

The school also will feature a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum called — Project Lead the Way — a program incorporating hands-on activities in areas such as biomedical science, computer science and engineering.

1996, the number of charter schools in Florida has grown from five to more than 658 in 2018-19 with 313,000 students enrolled.

Charter schools don’t charge tuition. They are public schools that receive public funding. All teachers are certified and each year the school’s academic standards and progress are evaluated and graded.

Homeschoolers enjoy fun break at Viera Regional Community Center

BY WENDY SCHEURING Every Tuesday, homeschooled children ranging in age from 5 to 11 can take a break from learning at home to engage in fun activities at the Viera Regional Community Center.

The homeschool program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m., is comprised of three different classes, all held in succession.

These courses center on art, life skills and physical education. The three-hour homeschool class is held year round, with the exception of holidays.

It’s probably one of my most fun paintings.�

In “Winter in Paris,� horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians navigate the snowy streets near the Arc de Triomphe. Linger a bit at this painting. What does the artist divulge and what more of the story would you, the viewer, like to know?

In her painting, “Autumn in the Mountains,� she captured “the sun shimmering through one spot, illuminating one part of the forest.� The peaceful, solitary setting feels like you’re in church.

Her artwork includes a Scripture verse. Some are easier to spot than others, and she urges people to “let the search begin.� “It is my passion to continue painting God’s creation and to share this with others,� Kucharyson wrote on her website.

When she lived in Colorado, her landscapes were the result of camping, and being outdoors with her family. Since moving to Melbourne in 2006, she says she is now “obsessed with the water. I go to the ocean and take gobs and gobs of

It is the 11th annual Brevard’s Got Music Talent.

Beginners hone creativity with artists at weekly classes

BY JUDY BERMAN Some see a blank canvas, sculpting material or other art supplies, and envision the potential it holds.

Others might find that intimidating. You should not.

The Art Gallery of Viera, a fine art gallery in The Avenue Viera, provides weekly classes to develop and hone skills in painting, textiles, jewelry, sculpting and much more.

“Most who come in start off as beginners. Some say they’re beginners, but they’re fabulous,” said Pearl Ollie, one of the gallery’s instructors who teaches sculpting and painting.

Ollie starts with perspectives and has her students focus on using their skills. That way, whether it’s painting or sculpting, Ollie says she gets them to create their own designs, rather than copying what she does.

One of Ollie’s students, Kate Johannsen of Satellite Beach, said she has “learned more from (Ollie) than anybody else. A lot of people come in and take a class. They say, ‘I’m not an artist.’ But she helps them see that they are.”

Sculpting classes are $45 for three hours. Painting sessions are $35 for three hours. If she provides the canvas or a small amount of clay, it’s an extra $10.

You can join instructor Ree Nathan on Tuesdays to learn how to make an original greeting card or papercrafted gift.

Nathan supplies highquality ink, paper, stamps and the tools to make two beautiful projects. The cost for the class and materials is $11.

“One of the things I really love is when they tell me that when people receive them, they keep them. Others say they don’t send them out because they love them,” Nathan said of the creations made in her class.

Suzan Brooks, a mixed media and mosaic artist, offers classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“Anything can be a mosaic.

Mirrors, boxes, shoes, lamps, bottles, rocks, flowerpots, back splashes. ... You are only limited by your imagination,” according to her flyer.

Students are responsible for supplies in the mosaic class. Kits are for sale from

the instructor. Fees are $25 per class if you use Brooks’ tools. If you provide your own tools, the cost is $20 per class.

Seating is limited. It’s recommended that you call the instructors for class availability and for sources of

supplies and any tools needed.

Boutique fitness facilities for women thrive in Viera

BY WENDY SCHEURING Two years ago, owners Diane Hawthorne Thomas and Dawn Garrison opened Empower Fitness, a boutiquestyle fitness facility focusing on overall health and fitness for women.

Located in The Avenue Viera, the 5,000-squarefoot facility offers space

for personal training, small group fitness, specialty classes and heart rate monitoring.

“She’s (Garrison) always wanted to have her own gym,” Thomas said. “I have always been in business to empower women. Our collaboration is very unique and what you would not find in most gyms.

“We focus on strength as

well as resistance training."

Empower Fitness offers a free, three-day trial. There also is a free community workout at 8:30 a.m. each Saturday and a beach workout each Sunday. There is a dropin fee for nonmembers. For members, the beach class is free.

Classes are small in size and are “designed to shape a woman’s body,” Thomas said.

On average, membership is about 130 members.

On Jan. 10, the kickoff for the Ultimate 21-day Decade Challenge will take place. This individual challenge is offered monthly to members and includes workshops, guest

speakers, a workbook, prizes and a drawing for $500 cash.

“What sets us apart is that we educate. That is our main key for our business,” Thomas said. “We are driven to create a community where women feel safe when they walk into a gym.”

Also at The Avenue Viera is Club Pilates Viera, “a boutique Pilates studio specializing in reformer fusion classes for anyone, at any age or fitness level. Pure to Joseph Pilates’ original Reformerbased Contrology Method, but modernized with group practice and expanded stateof-the-art equipment, Club Pilates offers high-quality,

“Pilates is a great form of exercise that heals the body,” said Julia Pontones, the general manager of Club Pilates Viera. “It is meant to correct misalignment and strengthen the core.”

Owners Emily and Heath Rehkop, a married couple who are both disabled veterans, were looking for a business that would allow them to give back to the community.

With more than three decades of experience in the field, Purinton’s inspiration for the name of her salon is her family.

“Madeleine is my mother’s name and she was a large influence in my choosing a career as a hairstylist,” said the New Hampshire native.

Purinton’s mother, who passed away in 1995, also is the namesake for Purinton’s 13-year-old daughter, already considering becoming a hair stylist like her mom.

After 24 years of running a successful salon in an Ivy League, New Hampshire town, Purinton relocated to Suntree in 2017. She was unsure of what the future held for her professionally.

Co. antique shop thrives in unique peaceful place

BY ERNEST ARICO Once upon a time, there was a man named Peter Karas of Greek origin who loved his wife, Calliope, very, very much.

Now Calliope was very sick and her husband was worried she would die. He was determined to heal his wife by honoring God. His prayers were answered and his wife recovered. To honor God for healing his wife, in 1992, the husband built a private, family chapel at 5830 North Wickham Road in Melbourne and called it the Chapel of St. Panteleimon.

According to many religious scholars, St. Panteleimon is venerated in the Greek Orthodox Church as a mighty saint, the protector of soldiers.

This aspect of his veneration is derived from his first name Pantoleon, which means a lion in everything. His second name, Panteleimon — given to him at Baptism — means all-merciful, which reveals itself in the veneration of the great martyr as a healer. The connection between these two patronages of the saint is readily apparent in that soldiers, receiving wounds more frequently than others, are more in need of a physician-healer.

The name of the fourth century healer is invoked in the

Sacrament of Anointing the Sick, at the Blessing of Water and in the Prayer for the Sick.

For many years, the chapel was used by the Karas family for special events such as weddings and baptisms. It was even used as a school for Greek children. It has a fairly large blue dome in the middle between two turret-like elements. Three Greek crosses are on the roof tops and dome.

However, when the husband died several years ago, the family decided to sell the building.

In 2016, Robyn Walley and her husband, Robert Williams, bought the chapel and property and converted it into a unique antique shop called Junk & Co. The couple collaborated on a very special shop full of handpicked items from all over the world with a French influence.

They have transformed the chapel inside and out with Old World finishes, original trompe l’oeil paintings, custom flooring and an incredible collection of some of the finest historic architectural examples in the Southeast.

The grand opening was held May 8, 2017.

In addition, Walley kept the elaborate stained-glass windows and light-filled cupola as a reminder of the building’s original purpose. But, beyond

that, there is little to remind visitors of the old chapel. She assigned local muralist Jean Filipski with the task of faux finishing the place to replicate an antique barn.

The ancient milk truck that is parked next to the store seems to be real, but here Filipski also did her magic to fool the eye into thinking the vehicle is as old as it looks. It is not.

Originally from Boston, Walley moved to Brevard County in 1992 because “the weather was good” and she wanted to be close to her

randfather of Heritage sle resident receives long-overdue medal

Ron Faessen can’t be blamed if a few tears flow from his eyes whenever he finds the iconic 1 57 war movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” on television.

Faessen’s grandfather, Louis Hendrik Coppen, died Oct. 15, 1943 of malnutrition in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in the village of Chungkai in Thailand.

Coppen, a rifleman in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), was captured March 9, 1942

by Japanese soldiers while defending the island of Java in Indonesia.

Coppen eventually was sent to a POW camp, where the prisoners were forced to work on the construction of the Thai-Burma railroad to India near the River Kwai.

On Dec. 11, military representatives from the Netherlands traveled to Viera to present the Mobilization War Cross to Faessen in honor of his grandfather. Faessen is a resident of Heritage Isle in Viera.

The presentation was held in Building C of the Brevard County Government Center.

said. “Jacq Brijl, a 91-yearold retired Dutch lieutenant colonel, was looking for families whose relatives died during the war. He wants to keep alive the history of my Indo-Dutch ancestry and culture.’’

During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese tried to obtain the support of the Indonesian people by promising their

independence from the Dutch after World War II. “After the war, there was a large migration to Holland and to the rest of the world,’’ Faessen said. “Some in Indonesia wanted to remove the Dutch identity. As part of the Marshall Plan, the Dutch had to give up the Dutch East Indies.’’

Faessen’s father Paul, a member of the Indo–Dutch

Marines, married Eleonore Coppen, the oldest daughter of Louis Hendrik Coppen.

Ron Faessen has submitted a request to the Dutch government for his father to receive the Cross for Order and Peace for his service during the late 1940s.

Ironically, Ron Faessen was born March 9, 1948.

That was six years to the date that his grandfather

was captured. Three months after his birth, Paul Faessen moved his family to Holland to live.

In 1952, Faessen’s father moved to the United States and the family soon followed in 1953.

Ron Faessen served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Da Nang in South Vietnam. During peace talks in 1972, his unit was transferred to Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand.

While there, his mother told him that her father was buried nearby in Thailand.

He was able to visit his father’s grave site near the River Kwai.

“Before he was sent to Thailand, my mother was able to see her father at a POW camp in Java,’’ Faessen said. “The family was able to bring him food and medicine.

The last time my mother saw her father he had teeth missing from being beaten.’’

Faessen and his wife Mona wish that Eleonore Faessen had lived long enough to see her father receive the posthumous medal. She died in February 2016 at the age of 89 from complications

Bobcats saunter through yards. If confronted, they generally hide or walk away.

If they do not retreat, it is best to deliberately back away. Running to escape might instinctively cause them to pounce 12 feet or chase in short bursts at 25 to 30 miles per hour.

Seemingly, certain creatures have some control over disease-carrying mosquitoes. The renown Charles Darwin’s fastevolving finches of the Galapagos Islands were observed rubbing their feathers with the leaves of the Galapagos guava tree, supposedly to repel mosquitoes and parasites.

The mosquitoes were believed to have been brought over on tourist planes. It is claimed that other species in the world also instinctively rub their feathers or fur with plant material for repellents.

Humans can moderately control mosquitoes by removing standing water, applying repellents or spraying infested areas.

Regarding other wildlife, it is prudent to suppress curiosity and evade encounters. VV

Pet chaplain helps people cope a er death of cherished pets

BY WENDY SCHEURING When you lose your family pet, it’s like losing a member of the family.

Whether pets die from natural causes, terminal illness, an accident, or if they run away or need to be rehomed, we can experience intense emotions of sadness, and even guilt.

In the case of pets that have become lost or have run away, Rockledge resident Karen Cohen, a pet chaplain, works with owners to find them.

“Did they contact all the shelters within a certain perimeter? Did they make a sign to post? Was the animal chipped? Did they let neighbors know that you’re looking?” Cohen said. “If the pet is never recovered, then we go into the mode that it was killed or someone else took it. Then, we move into the grieving mode. That’s

pretty challenging. In some cases, more challenging than animal hospice.”

Cohen has been a pet chaplain since 1995 and provides services for a donation.

We also grieve pets that we might need to rehome because we can no longer care for them for a variety of reasons such as relocation, finances or no longer being able to provide care. Finding a friendly home to take in your pets is optimal. If not, Cohen recommends doing your research and taking your pet to a reputable nokill shelter.

When terminally ill pets are euthanized, the guilt part is the hardest part, according to Cohen. “Many ask, ‘Did I do it too fast, or too late?’” Because pet parents worry that their pet was unduly suffering or could have lived a bit longer.

Quality of life is an important factor when deciding whether a pet should be in animal hospice or euthanized.

“I work with the pet parent and the veterinarian if the animal has a disease that there is no cure for and it will cause death. We keep

the animal pain free with minimal side effects and help the pet with its daily living,’’ Cohen said. “When the pain medications aren’t working, the quality of life goes down and we start working and preparing for euthanasia.’’

“It should be done at home or at least at a vet’s office

where there is a separate area,” she said. “I think by having it done at home, it’s more comfortable for the pet. When you try to take your pet to the vet, you add to their stress level. Second of all, keeping the pet in their surroundings helps keeps them calm. I also think it’s better for the owners because they’re in their own surroundings.”

Upon request, Cohen will accompany people to the veterinarian or be with them at home when a pet is being euthanized. She also does memorial services upon request.

“It’s comforting to know that you’re there for your pet and that you love one another. Saying goodbye is important and also knowing that you’re doing the right thing.”

Viera etlands polishes water provides home for wildlife The Viera Wetlands, at 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera, works hard to clean waste water and to provide a home for numerous birds, reptiles and mammal species. It’s worth a visit.

The Wetlands, also known as the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands, were built in 2000 as an add on to the South-Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. With the growing population, the utility needed more land to store and clean reuse water.

Instead of creating an industrial facility, it designed a 200-acre site with four large ponds and one central deep lake. It also features sand-packed roads, bike trails, parking lots and observation structures.

More than 200,000 people visit the Wetlands annually.

And, there is a lot to see.

The site is planted with natural vegetation. Each pond features an island with a specific habitat for different bird species. In addition, the space provides habitat for other animals, including otters, bobcats, alligators and turtles as well as a special butterfly garden.

In 2002, thousands of birders attending the Space Coast Birding Festival visited the Wetlands to see the first .S. sighting ever of a Mangrove Swallow and, in 2006, a pair of Masked Ducks.

While these are highlights, dramatic and unusual birds frequently can be seen. Bald Eagles and the rarer Crested Caracara, herons, limpkins

Winter is the best time for bird watching before migrators return north in the spring.

Returning to polishing water, the wastewater from the advanced treatment plant contains high concentrations of phosphorous that can help cause harmful algal blooms if released directly into the St. Johns River or the Indian River Lagoon.

The Wetlands’ abundant vegetation is perfect for extracting and lowering phosphorous levels. It also acts as a seasonal storage site for water during the rainy season.

The Wetlands are operated by the county utility. The Brevard Department of Natural Resources monitors the biology of the site semiannually. Volunteers help maintain the site and donations help support it.
