Back to school brings excitement It's time to return to the classroom

If you have recently moved into the Viera and Suntree area and you want your child to attend Viera High School for the 2019-2020 school year, student registration will be conducted Aug. 8.

According to the high school’s website, registration for the four grades will be held during five different time spots: • Grade 9: 8 to 10 a.m.

• Grade 10: 10 a.m. to noon.

• Grade 11: Noon to 2 p.m.

• Grade 12: 2 to 4 p.m.

• All grades: 4 to 6 p.m.

Registration will be held in the school’s auditorium and cafeteria.

Last spring, registration packets were distributed to all Viera students in order to expedite the registration process.

School officials said if you have not completed your student’s registration packet, contact the guidance office in order to complete this packet prior to Aug. 8. This will ensure a smooth registration process and that your student has a completed

Chamber luncheon hosts space program patch designer

BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing this year, what better time to appreciate those members of our community that have been a part of NASA and the various space programs?

On July 10, the Greater Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce (GPBCC) held its monthly membership luncheon with guest speaker Timothy Gagnon, the Kennedy Space Center artist and NASA missions and commemorative patches designer.

One of the central aims of the chamber’s monthly membership luncheon is to share community representatives with Palm Bay and its surrounding cities in a central location.

“The goal (of these meetings) is to educate and inspire our members to grow their business,” said Cindy Hunt, the director of member relations and

work designing patches for various space programs, as well as about his inspirations. Gagnon’s work has been part of the International Space Station program, and many of his designs have been worn by astronauts in space.

“The most interesting aspect (of my work) is that my artwork orbits the Earth,” Gagnon said. “A lot of artists have gallery showings, and they’re all wonderful and well deserved, but my gallery is the International Space Station.

“Every crew is different,” Gagnon said, explaining the difficulties of his work.

Gagnon was invited to July’s luncheon by Nancy Peltonen, the president and CEO of the GPBCC. “I met Gagnon at the 46th Space Congress, and he designed the patch for that,” Peltonen said. “It was beautiful. We were sitting together and (...) I said, ‘you would be perfect to speak at our luncheon,’ and now with the Apollo celebrations, he (turned out to be) the perfect one to be at this luncheon. We have a lot of community leaders (at the monthly membership luncheon).”

When one thinks of the typical Floridian animals, the image of an otter isn’t always the first to spring to mind. With Brevard County’s close proximity to the Indian River Lagoon, however, otters might be closer than you think.

Discover Florida’s Oceans has a program called Otter Spotter that is actively researching and documenting otters in Brevard.

“For the Otter Spotter program, there are two different components to it,” said Susan Phillips, the development manager for HSRI. “One is our Citizens Science Project for citizens of Brevard. If they spot an otter, either alive or dead, they (can) go report it on our website (discoverfloridaoceans.com/ otterspotter).”

Second annual Space Coast K-9 Competition set to educate, excite

BY CHRIS BONANNO Last year’s inaugural Space Coast K-9 Competition, held at Cocoa High School in October, thrilled an enthusiastic crowd as police dogs and their handlers based both locally and from other parts of the state competed for both pride and prizes.

As great as that event was, the second annual version of the competition figures to be even better. It will be held Oct. 12.

“It’ll grow this year and it’ll be a big fun time,” said Cocoa Police Department officer Chris Hattaway, who organizes the event along with fellow CPD officer Dan Rhodes.

Last year’s event, which featured competitions that saw dogs navigate an obstacle course and participate in a hard dog/ fast dog competition that measured both the dogs’ speed and bite, featured 26 officer and dog tandems.

This year’s event, Hattaway said, will feature between 35 and 40 teams.

Some of those teams will be based locally though others, as was the case last year, will come from places outside Brevard County. Hattaway expects an increase in teams from the southern portion of the state.

Those competitions will return, though Hattaway added that the obstacle course competition this year will finish with dogs having to perform an “apprehension bite.”

Hattaway noted that he enjoyed getting the public out to the event and being able to view the coordination between the dogs, which usually are either German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois and their handlers.

"I really care about educating the public,” Hattaway said. “I love the fact that the public can actually come see the handlers work with their partners, how intimate that relationship is."

Proceeds from last year’s event went toward Cocoa Community First, a nonprofit which helps to fund both youth and community outreach programs put together by the CPD, organizers said.

The Space Coast United Soccer program has always had a long history of success.

But never anything like this.

After having six teams win Florida Cup championships earlier this summer, the SCU has sent seven teams on to play in national tournaments throughout the country.

“The club has had tremendous success in the 2018-2019 (season),” said Scott Armstrong, the Space Coast United Soccer Club's executive director of coaching in a statement. “We have broken all records and created a great learning and development environment.

become a well-known, state-wide program and well respected. The success is across all age brackets, which reflects the development and the goal of creating a program that represents a positive environment for kids to learn and play and achieve their goals.”

Here’s a look at how some of the SCU’s top teams did this season: SCU Girls 2001 Red Team Although it lost the FYSA State Cup final on penalty kicks, the team was later invited to play in the USYS Southern Regionals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The team impressively made it to the quarterfinals, beating the Georgia state champion and tying the Tennessee state champs.

Viera's Davis hopes for 'monster' senior season

BY CARL KOTALA After a breakout junior season, Viera High School defensive lineman Cooper Davis didn’t want to just get better.

He wanted to become a beast.

So, as the Hawks kick off their 2019 season this month, you can expect to see a lot more of the 6-foot7 University of Missouri commit.

About 30 … maybe even 40 pounds more.

Advised by his coaches to bulk up without losing the speed that makes him so effective, Davis has gone from 220 pounds at the end of last season to more than 250 with the hope of reaching 260 before the start of the season.

If he was tough to deal with before, just think what it will be like for opposing offensive lines to have to deal with him this season.

“We’ve got a big goal that if I hit 27 sacks this year, I’ll break two school records,” Davis said. “I’ll break the most for one season and the most for a career.”

After going from nine sacks as a sophomore to 21 as a junior, getting 27 sacks as a senior wouldn’t seem like an unrealistic goal for Davis. It would also confirm why he received close to 30 scholarship offers from schools such as Missouri, West Virginia, Nebraska, UCF and Tennessee.

Viera High School defensive lineman Cooper Davis (No. 45) has added more than 30 pounds to his 6-foot-7 frame as he prepares for what he hopes will be a big senior season. Davis committed to Missouri during the summer.

Having spent the first 15 years of his life in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, before moving to Florida, the Tigers were always Davis’ dream school. That made his commitment an easy call.

“Missouri is just such a great place for me,” he said. “I feel like it’s just a perfect fit.”

Now that the stress of the recruiting process has been lifted off his shoulders,

Davis can concentrate on his senior year. He will be part of a defensive line Viera coach Derek Smith said might be the best he has ever coached.

With Davis, Julius Barfield, Jamari Lyons and Jackson Hatfield all returning from last year, plus Tyler Cooley coming in as a fifth defensive lineman, the Hawks have talent and experience up front.

But there is no question, the Hawks will look to provide a good matchup for Davis, or to use him to help free up the others when it comes to the pass rush.

“Our plan for Cooper is that we’re going to play him on both the inside and the outside, but we will probably play him over the weakest offensive lineman for the other team, forcing them to

double team him,” Smith said.

“He’s going to demand double teams.”

Although Davis would prefer to be on the outside, where he has more freedom to use what he called his, “high-twitch, finesse” style, he’s open to whatever the Hawks need to succeed.

State titles, district championships highlight VSLL All-Star season

BY CARL KOTALA Two state championships in one season.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

The Viera-Suntree Little League All-Star baseball and softball teams have had quite a summer … and it’s not over yet.

The VSLL Juniors baseball team defeated North Springs 5-0 on July 21 at MitchellEllington Park on Merritt Island to win the state championship and claim a spot in the Southeast Regional, which is set for Aug. 2 to 6 in Broadway, Virginia.

That same week, the VSLL Majors will be playing in the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Georgia from Aug. 2 to 7. The Majors booked their ticket for the regionals by defeating Plant

City 10-0 in the state title game.

“I’m extremely proud of the boys,” said VSLL President Charlie Gutierrez.

“Quietly and through adversity, they just showed up.

“To get this far, it’s a blessing. It’s a testament to all their hard work and to all the coaches who are dedicated to these kids.”

In addition to the two state champions, VSLL players also were part of several District 2 winners.

Comedy specials, road trips part of recruiting grind for Viera’s Lamp

BY CARL KOTALA Gavin Lamp’s journey to fulfilling a life-long dream of playing college football ultimately led him to the University of Richmond, where the Viera High School graduate is preparing for his freshman season.

But during the course of three summers, that journey also led him to places such as Virginia, Furman, Georgia Southern, the University of Connecticut, Georgia State … and a lot of places in between.

“It’s a grind,” Lamp said of his college recruiting process which included trips to various football camps — sometimes three in a single weekend — throughout the southeast.

“Me and my dad would leave on Thursday or Friday.

We’d pack the car, get all my equipment and drive up there. We’d listen to the radio, listen to comedy specials.

“We would drive hours at a time, go to a camp, compete, take a quick shower at the hotel, get in the car … I would probably nap and he would drive to the next school.”

While five-star recruits have colleges practically banging down their door, for others it’s not just a matter of sending out tapes. It’s a matter of being seen and getting their names out there.

Lamp, an offensive lineman, remembers those days all too well.

“As an O-lineman, it comes down to do you have the grit?

How bad do you want it? Play to the whistle. Pancakes are always a plus,” he said.

“Recruiting is always a grind. It’s fun and it’s tough at the same time. It’s a great time in your life.”

In the end, Lamp had offers from Richmond, Stetson, Jacksonville, Morehead State and a Division II school.

Other places such as UConn, Lafayette, FAU, FIU and Mercer wanted him as a preferred walk-on.

Some coaches told Lamp he was their “next guy” and that if the player they had ranked in front of him decided to go somewhere else, they would offer him.

In other words, if the other guy commits, we wish you the best of luck. If he doesn’t, we’ll keep in touch.

“It’s a very real side (of recruiting),” Lamp said. “It sucks, but it’s all about the path, where I’m at. I obviously want to play Furman and show them what they missed out on. I want to play all of those schools, if possible.

“William & Mary, I was talking to them for a while and they told me the same

thing. Then Richmond offered and now I’m ready to play them this year. It’s a rivalry game. I’m ready to show them what they missed out on.”

If there were two things Lamp knew he could count on throughout the process, it was support coming from two areas — his real-life family, and his football family.

“Viera is home. That’s what I’m thankful for,” Lamp said.

“There are tough times when offers don’t come your way, or people leave, or you get injured.

“The one thing I’ve always felt about Viera is it’s always been a brotherhood.

It’s always been a family.

(Former offensive line coach, now offensive coordinator Mike) Degory has been in contact with me ever since I left. We still talk. When I go to Richmond, I plan on still talking to him.

“They’re just father figures to me, which I don’t think you get at a lot of at other schools.”

Gavin and his father, Garrett, have always been close. In fact, it was Garrett who took Gavin to see the movie “The Blind Side” that helped the younger Lamp fall in love with playing football.

The road trips the two took during those three summers … listening to Jim Gaffigan’s comedy on the radio … only made them closer.

“We had so many fun moments,” Gavin Lamp said.

“We’ve run into so many weird individuals along the way. We’ve been across the whole southeast of America together. At the end of the day, it’s just made us closer every step of the way. … Again, the recruiting process is tough, it’s a grind, but then again, it’s fun. I thank him a hundred percent.”

Lamp’s advice to other players who want to play college football is simple: “Be patient,” he said.

“Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to a coach. I was always a timid person and my dad would always say, ‘Gavin, go say hi to these people. Put your name out there.’

“It only takes one school. I think I’m going to be a prime example of that. I think me going to Richmond is going to be a great thing for me.

Obviously, the goal is the NFL. “That’s the end goal. But if not, I get a college degree.

Be patient and don’t be afraid to go out there and compete.

Don’t go hiding in the back.

Show yourself. Show what you can do. There’s a school for everyone and you’ll find it.” VV

Blazer’s impact on Duran’s Juniors Academy tremendous

BY CARL KOTALA There is no question Justin Blazer has made an incredible impact since being named the director of instruction at the Duran Academy of Golf a little more than five years ago.

And the thing is … it’s only going to get better.

“It’s hard to measure an impact year-to-year, but when you see things over the span of five years, what’s gone on … I’ve had seven kids go on to get scholarships to play golf, nine of them to go on to play college golf total,” Blazer said.

“To see them grow has been outstanding, not just on the course, but off the course.

than 150 have been involved, whether it’s the after-school program, the PGA Junior League or the elite player program.

Blazer is working with more than 50 competitive players and four are ranked in the top 50 of their class on Junior Golf Scoreboard.

Six players will play in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships Aug. 1 to 3.

One of Blazer’s students, Asher Joseph, won the Future Masters Championship in the 11-12 age group in June.

Among the players Blazer has worked with who have gotten scholarships are Viera’s Calvin Sierota (Florida State) and Mary Kate Smith (Lipscomb), Windermere’s

Eric Berggren (Indiana) and Cocoa’s Jenna Werle (Saint Rose).

While developing elitelevel golfers is something Blazer takes pride in, so is watching those same players give back to the younger kids who will one day, hopefully, be in their shoes.

After all, it’s nice to get advice and be able to spend some time with someone you look up to.

“Double teams are interesting,” Davis said. “If you beat the first guy, it’s kind of over because the second guy is shocked that you did it. There was one time … the guard tried to down block/ double team me. I swam him (used a swim move) and the tackle just froze and I just ran through.”

Though he grew up dreaming of playing at a bigtime college, and eventually the NFL, Davis admitted he was a little surprised at the number of offers he received after his junior season. But as Smith explained, there’s plenty there for college coaches to love.

“He’s got very good technique with long arms (79 inches),” Smith said. “His first two steps are very quick. But on top of that, he’s got very good leverage for a guy who is 6-foot-7.

“I don’t think there’s a question he’s going to dominate this year.” V V

With the rising costs of university schooling, every little bit helps. Some students are even able to earn scholarships to help fund the way.

One program that provides students with the extra funding for future learning is the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). The Cape Canaveral chapter of the MOAA (MOAACC) recently awarded 10 students with a scholarship during its MOAACC Scholarship Corporation's 36th annual Awards Luncheon.

“I think when people have input and when they’re truly committed to something, there’s a lot more chance of it being successful than if I come in and force something on people, or say, ‘This is the

Parking permits also will be available for sale for both golf carts and vehicles.

Seniors also can elect to pay an additional $20 if they would like to paint the concrete bumper of their reserved parking spot.

The school also announced that Calvary Chapel, located across the street from the high school, will not allow students to park their golf carts and other vehicles in their parking lot during the school year.

“Summer is a great time because we get to plan and prepare for the next year,” Robinson said. “Our school data came back and we’re once again an ‘A’ school, a very high ‘A’ school, which is attributed to the success of our students, our teachers, our supportive parents and our community.

Robinson will enter her fourth year at Viera after serving as the school’s assistant principal — curriculum — before being named acting principal after Mike Alba left to take a job with the Brevard County School District last November. She officially was named principal in May. Taking over a school that is projected to have an enrollment of 2,195 for the upcoming school year can be quite a challenge. But fortunately for Robinson, she knows there won’t be any major changes that need to be made when classes begin Aug. 12.

“The great thing about

Viera is that Mr. Alba did a phenomenal job as a leader, putting a lot of positive things in place to continue to move the school forward,” she said.

“It’s not a school where I feel like I have to come in and change everything, or fix everything. There’s a lot of positive things that are already going on and are in place. Part of what I think is important is involving our parents, our teachers and our students in any kind of change process.”

Life gets busy for Medal of Honor recipient

BY R. NORMAN MOODY Medal of Honor recipient Melvin Morris shared with members of the Military Officers of America Cape Canaveral Chapter how his life has changed since he was honored with the medal.

Morris, a retired Army staff sergeant and the only living Medal of Honor recipient in Brevard County, was the guest speaker at a recent MOAACC luncheon meeting.

Because of speaking engagements and community involvement, Morris has had to set aside the fishing he was doing since retiring. But he tries to honor as many requests for speaking engagements as possible.

“I’ve been busy ever since I received the Medal of Honor,” Morris said. “It gets hard, but I try not to turn them down.”

Since he received the medal, he has traveled throughout the state and around the nation speaking to different veterans and civic groups. He also is involved with the Medal of Honor oundation’s Community Development Program. The program works with teachers to promote understanding among students of the American tradition of liberty, military history and patriotic values. sing oral histories of Medal of Honor recipients, the program focuses on how students can use examples of courage, commitment, sacrifice, integrity, citizenship and patriotism to influence change in their communities.

Morris, who lives in Cocoa, said he has only missed attending meetings and speaking engagements twice. He said that for the first time he had not traveled in about a month.

Morris was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on Sept. 17, 1969 in Vietnam. He was commanding the Third Company, Third Battalion of the IV Mobile Strike orce, near Chi ang, and led an advance across enemy lines to retrieve a fallen comrade.

He single-handedly destroyed an enemy force that had pinned down his battalion. Morris was shot three times as he ran back toward friendly lines with the American casualties, but he did not stop until he reached safety.

Morris initially was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in April 1 0 for his extraordinary heroism. Within a month, he returned to Vietnam for his second tour. Morris retired from the Army in 1 .

Hot, spicy chicken restaurant to open at The Avenue

BY ERNEST ARICO If you like your chicken hot and spicy, then you might want to check out the new Joella’s Hot Chicken restaurant coming to Viera.

The restaurant, which is opening later this summer or early fall in the old Pollo Tropical location at The Avenue Viera, 1 ake Andrew Drive, is one of three planned to open in Florida.

The other two locations are in the Tampa area argo and Seminole.

Christina Happel, the regional vice president of operations for Joella's Hot Chicken, said the deciding factor for opening a restaurant in Viera was the company’s ability to reuse the old Pollo Tropical restaurant.

“The buildings are modeled to what we can do,” she said. “We are a family-

oriented restaurant. We wanted to be located in an urbanized area and Viera was the perfect fit.”

Once the construction is complete, a grand opening will take place providing tours to the general public.

RV adventures keep Suntree author busy

Violet Favero loves adventures.

In fact, the -year-old Suntree woman and author of several children’s books, is enjoying life so much right now she isn’t thinking about slowing down.

“I’m having a wonderful time,” she said before embarking on a hiking trip to urope. “I have nine granddaughters and I love spending time with them, writing and illustrating books and doing volunteer work at schools and libraries.”

Ancestry website helps Suntree woman nd long-lost half-sisters

The great English writer Geoffrey Chaucer is the first person to have put the proverb “better late than never” into print in “The eoman's Prologue and Tale, Canterbury Tales,” around 1 .

And while this proverb is often expressed with a degree of sarcasm, apparently saying or doing something positive or do something later than expected is better than not at all.

That might be the case for 79-year-old Janet Johns of Suntree, who recently found out she had twin halfsisters — siblings she hadn’t seen or known

On the website for Otter Spotter, there is a map with data points that represent otter sightings around Brevard County. There are a surprising number of points on the map. Phillips noted that otters are typically seen near freshwater areas such as under docks.

Phillips also was careful to note that people should not approach otters in the wild. Otters might carry diseases like any other

wild animal and might be aggressive. Instead, onlookers should report the sighting to Otter Spotter, and avoid coming too close to the otter.

The Otter Spotter program is run under one of Discover lorida’s Oceans’ research programs, called the River Otter cology Health Program.

Microplastics are everywhere Plastic is in the air.

Well, plastic is really everywhere.

Besides the obvious places, like oceans and land, studies have found small particles of plastic, known as microplastics, in the air, tap and bottled water, beer, table salt and, most recently, in a human stool.

Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than millimeters long, which is about the size of a sesame seed. These tiny pieces of plastic can make it into waterways and will never biodegrade. They might be in the form of microbeads,

found in toothpaste, facial scrubs and other cosmetic and personalcare products and fibers, released when washing synthetic fabric fragments, a result from bigger pieces of plastic broken down by sunlight or dust, blown from construction sites.

“The average American may be inadvertently swallowing as many as 0,000 microplastic particles every year because of contaminated food,” reports ChemistryWorld.com.

That estimate derives from the consumption of recommended amounts of seafood, sugars, salt and beer.

In 01 , President Obama signed the Microbead- ree Waters Act of 01 , banning plastic microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products.

That was a step forward in reducing plastic pollution generated, but more needs to be done. Reducing the production and use of plastic will reduce the amount of plastic waste generated.

Every corporation, business, organization and individual should be doing their part to cut down on plastic waste — however they can. Even though plastic is already everywhere, it would be good to believe that we can reverse that once cutting down is the selected choice.

Crackers were Florida’s first true cowboys Spinning tales about the lorida Crackers, who were pioneer, backwoods settlers who arrived in our future state around 1 .

This came after the Spanish interior colonialization efforts had ceased. They often were of Celtic ScotsIrish) and British descent.

For their livelihood, they pursued farming, but especially open-range ranching. They overtook the abandoned Spanish Andalusian cattle, sturdy ancestors of today’s Texas longhorns.

The Cracker label potentially originated from these first cowboys, also called cowmen or cow hunters, mounted on short horses Cracker ponies) of Spanish descent, cracking bullwhips to herd cattle.

Alongside were the loyal Cracker curs, their cattle dogs. et, the Cracker name also might have referred to cracking grinding) corn or being called uakers by the Spanish.

While driving cattle for weeks and months, cowboys traveled The Cracker Trail of 1 0 miles in Central lorida from

Fort Pierce to Bradenton.

Major algae blooms block the sun, which can cause the death of seagrass, plants, fish and other animals.

When mowing a lawn, be sure to blow or leave the grass and lawn clippings in the yard. When clippings blow into the street from a driveway or other cement areas, they often end up in storm drains and water bodies. Other nutrient sources include pet waste, pesticides and herbicides, and soaps used to wash cars.

“I was born in 1 0 and you have to remember things were a lot different back then,” Johns said. “My mother was 22 and my father was . They were not married when she had me so she thought it would be best to put me up for adoption.”

Janet Johns and her twin half-sisters shared the same biological mother, Evelyn Jessie, who died in 010. velyn Jessie married in 1 1 and had twin girls in 1 1. Janis Joan was born minutes earlier than her sister, Janet Jean. Today, the twin sisters reside in Jamestown and Bismarck, North Dakota, respectively.

“Our mother never told us we had a half-sister, Janis Joan said. “I guess she didn’t want us to know what happened to her. She velyn) was very tip-lipped about her past.”

“We could see right away the resemblance of our mom velyn) in Janet,” Janis Joan said.

“We have so much in common, it’s unreal,” Janet Johns said. “I play the piano and love music and so do my sisters.”
