Unique flagpole serves area

This baby owl and its sibling were rescued after falling from their nest at Indian River Colony Club.

Louis Belize, an Indian River Colony Club golf course employee, discovered a baby owl on the ground while working on the seventh hole fairway. Realizing the owl was in trouble, he notified Ed Carbin from IRCC’s pest control. Randy Poppe started documenting the rescue attempt in photos and tracking the owl’s movement while Carbin contacted

Carbin and Johnie Sanchez , an IRCC pest control employee, carefully captured and took the owl to the sanctuary. The plan was to return the baby owl to its original location after a few days of observation, feeding and care, and once it was deemed healthy enough to return.

When delivering the baby owl to the sanctuary, they were surprised to learn that its sibling had been delivered a few days prior. The owlettes, as they are called, were most likely blown out of the nest during high winds. Two days later, Carbin coordinated with Green Leaf for a hydraulic lift and, together with FWHS volunteers,

The 10th annual Relay for Life Viera/ Suntree was a success, featuring a slightly shorter event this year for 22 teams walking around The Avenue Viera to raise money and awareness for cancer research by the American Cancer Society. “Each Relay for Life goes from 18 hours to 12 hours. This year we’re not doing it overnight. We’re trying 12 hours to change things up a little bit and the community responded,’’ said event chairman Rick Morton, a 10-year participant and supporter who also sits on the board of directors for the American Cancer Society, Brevard County Unit. At first glance, it appears the Brevard County School District headquarters or the adjacent Viera High School have a heck of a patriotic streak. And while that may be true, the giant flagpole that appears to be on their property does not belong to either of them. Box City drives the homeless point home BY GEORGE WHITE

They may have gotten wet at Box City held April 1 at The Church at Viera, but that may have helped spread the message among the 250 attendees about the challenges of family homelessness aided by Family Promise of Brevard. “It was a stormy night and it rained briefly. Even after the rain and things were wet and it wasn’t all that comfortable, we still had about 60 folks spend the night with us,” said Doug Holton, board chairman at Family Promise of Brevard, which became operational in 2013. Family Promise of Brevard has the support of 24 church congregations, 13 of which host families with the other supporting in various ways such as hosting a box city event, he said. “It was a great opportunity to make the community aware of family homelessness,” he said. Experts estimate there are 1,900 homeless kids in Brevard, he said.

It is becoming more common to work from home, but little would anyone suspect that Suntree resident Nancy Johnson is using her closet as a sound recording studio. “My first job was working at Post Group at the Disney MGM recording studios,” she said. “I remember being nervous on my first job, ‘Best Start on Breastfeeding.’ People were coming by on a tour and were watching me. “I submitted it for the FMPTA awards and won best female voiceover,” she added. She soon became known as “The Voiceover Queen.” Besides voiceovers, her portfolio includes TV work, including films, commercials and infomercials. A regular female voice on the Golf Channel, she has also played a news reporter on the television show “SeaQuest,” and did TV promo work for the Home Shopping Network. Today, she travels only as far as Orlando or Tampa for work because she is also a caregiver to husband Mel Johnson, once a top casting director in Florida. When he moved from Los Angeles to Orlando, he cast roles for episodic shows on

Nickelodeon, as well as film. The two met when she was auditioning for a secondary role in “Problem Child 2.” She was called back twice, then shot the scene. “That scene was later written out of the script,” she laughs. But the experience prompted her to take a class he was teaching. They married in 1993. Four years later, they bought a 7,000-squarefoot home overlooking Frenchman Bay in Bar Harbor, Maine. They opened a bed and breakfast, Sunset over West. The winters were spent in Orlando with Mel casting and Nancy acting. When Mel developed Lyme disease in 2003, they moved back to Orlando full-time. He continued to experience symptoms and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s five years later. “Parkinson’s is frustrating,” she said. “It affects the thought process and speech.” Still, they are hopeful about a recent Parkinson’s double blind study where Mel is improving. Tigers have momentum going into spring practice

Loaded with skilled players and young, but experienced athletes, this may be the most comfortable spring football practice session the Holy Trinity Tigers have had under head coach Nate Hooks Jr. After last year’s 7-4 season that saw Holy Trinity knock off Melbourne Central Catholic and advance to the Class 3A regional playoffs, the Tigers will have a little momentum going for them, too. “I think we’re going to have a better season this year than we did last year with everybody maturing,” rising senior linebacker/halfback Tay Griffin said. The Tigers, who began practice April 25, will host Jordan Christian Prep of Auburndale in their spring game May 20 at Catherine Ford Field. While Holy Trinity will once again field a young roster, a number of key players not only earned playing time, but had plenty of success last season. Defensively, the Tigers will be set at linebacker with Perry, Griffin and rising sophomore Sully Altman, who was second on the team in tackles last season. Rising senior Hunter Olinde, who had six sacks last season — his first year playing football — will anchor the defensive line. If all of that weren’t exciting enough for the Tigers this spring, there are a lot of college scouts expected to be on campus. “A ton of D-I coaches are coming through to see Jashaun and that’s going to increase the visibility of the program,” Hooks said. “It should be an extremely exciting time for the other players.” VV

And then there were two … state champions, that is. Viera High’s Sasha Belaya and Izzie Diaz became the first tennis players from either the boys or girls programs to win a state championship last month with an impressive performance at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. Belaya, a junior, defeated Geetha Velusamy of East Lake 6-2, 6-3 to win the Class 3A individual singles championship. She then teamed with Diaz for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) victory against Catherine Jakeway and Gabriela Castello of Nease to win the Class 3A doubles title. “These girls saw some fierce competition at the state level and, because of their hard work and dedication, they came back to Viera High School as the champions,” Hawks coach Maria Woodruff wrote in an email. “I’m very proud of the 2016 Viera High School girls tennis team, it was a successful season.” After going undefeated in the regular season and winning the Cape Coast Conference and district titles

“I was pretty excited when I won,” Belaya said. “I screamed pretty loud, didn’t I?” she asked Diaz, who responded with an affirmative. “I was just relieved and really happy that I won because I know that a lot of people wanted me to win states. They thought I could at the beginning. I was happy I was able to come through with it.” Diaz, who moved to Florida from Omaha, Neb., was excited about playing in the doubles final. Not only have she and Belaya formed a fast

friendship, but she said the level of play in Florida is better than Nebraska, giving the state title even more meaning. And after losing the first set, she and Belaya — playing her fourth match of the day — rallied for the victory. “I really wanted to win because last year I got really far in states in Nebraska and I got injured and I lost to someone I should not have lost to,” Diaz said. “I wanted to redeem myself and do better this year, and in Florida, which is a way bigger deal.” VV

along the way, the Hawks won their first regional playoff match against Jensen Beach before losing on the road to eventual state champ West Boca Raton. As district champs, Belaya and Diaz qualified for the individual state tournament and received the No. 1 seed in both singles and doubles.

Belaya, a tournament player who is ranked No. 4 in the state in the 18s and No. 41 in the nation in the 16s, had never played Velusamy before. But she was expecting a tough match. After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, she told herself to shake it off and just play tennis.

Sports and friendship are often intertwined, especially at the high school level. That’s especially true for seven seniors at Rockledge High School who will disperse for college to state schools and across the country after years of playing softball together. Some of the young women have played together since their Viera Little League days. Together, they’ve led the Rockledge girls softball team to its best record in school history, heading to regional competitions during both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. They also were named All Academic teams at the state level both years. From 2009 to 2015, all of the girls also traveled with

the Rebel Pride Gold softball club based in Brevard County. Six of the young women are zoned for Viera schools but are part of Rockledge’s Cambridge Program, a rigorous academic track connected to the university of the same name in England. “We are all very passionate about the game and have the same goals of winning and doing our best,” said Molly McLaughlin, who has been playing softball since age 8. She will head to Stetson University to play softball on a scholarship and major in math. Teammate and friend Savannah Simpson will also stay in state, majoring in microbiology at the University of South Florida.

She will not pursue softball in college, officially, but says the bond she’s formed with her teammates will stay with her. “No one is really left out. We are all together because of a common drive for softball and academics,” Simpson said. The other young women seniors on both the softball team and in the Cambridge Program are Ariel Aparicio, Kellie Bobango, Jennifer Bogus, Kayla Gray and Jaclyn Mijuskovic. When they aren’t on the field or studying, the young women hang out in typical teenager ways. “We go out to eat after practice and games, and like to go to other sporting events together,” McLaughlin said. The Eastern Florida State College men’s golf team will get the chance to play this year’s national event at Duran Golf Club. BY CARL KOTALA

A national championship will be decided at the Duran Golf Club this month. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Golf National Tournament will take place May 15 to 20. More than 20 teams from community colleges across the nation — including Eastern Florida State College — will compete for team and individual titles. “Duran Golf Club is much honored to be selected as host site for this prestigious event,” Duran General Manager David Tomczak said in a press release. “The course will provide an entertaining and challenging venue for this championship.” Through the years, the EFSC men’s golf program has traveled to Texas, Alabama, Iowa, New Mexico, Arizona and Kansas (last year) to compete for the national title. Titans coach Jamie Howell is happy the tournament is in Viera, but also doesn’t want his players to be overconfident because they’re playing on a familiar course. At the same time, it’s something his players can use to their advantage. EFSC finished second at

last year’s tournament and is seeking its first national title since 1991. “We’re preparing for a national tournament,” Howell said. “The idea here is to make sure you pay attention to all that you know about the golf course and use your past experience to your advantage as opposed to fretting about things. “We’re going to know the greens a little better than the other teams. We should know which way the golf ball’s going to travel when it’s windy out there. We’ve got a fair amount of course knowledge and we want to put that to use.” Former Holy Trinity standout Kerry Sweeney and Brad Bawden of England lead another strong Titans team this season. Now, not only will they get the chance to compete for a national title, they’ll get to do it in front of their home fans. That should make for a special tournament for both the Titans and local golf fans. “Our little community here has supported our program for a long time,” Howell said. “It will be nice to bring the national tournament home where they get to see it in person.” VV

Viera still a football force despite losses to graduation BY CARL KOTALA

There’s no question the Viera Hawks will have some holes to fill before football season begins next fall. After all, they will have lost star receivers Tre Nixon and Alex Cabrera, quarterback Hayden Kingston, plus defensive backs Jamyson Boyd, Trevor Merritt, Evan Cruz and Malek Folston to graduation. But as the Hawks go through their spring practice — it began April 25 — the situation isn’t as dire as it may seem. “We’re better off than I think a lot of people think,” coach Kevin Mays said. “… Now, is it going to be hard to replace Tre, Alex and Hayden? Absolutely. Is it going to be hard to replace those DBs? Yeah. But we’re not as bad off as people think.” People will be able to see for themselves on May 18, when

After going unbeaten in the regular season two years ago, then advancing all the way to the Class 7A state title game last season, the Hawks have emerged as one of the top programs in the county. Who said the cupboard is bare? “It’s false,” Foreman said. “Everyone is doubting us and they think those were our prime years. Well, that’s not true. We still have the same coaches. We also have a lot of players that are still here, and we still have leadership.” What the Hawks are going to have to find, of course, is a new quarterback. Because of all the players they have to replace, Kingston may be the toughest. Stepping up to that challenge will be rising sophomore Sean Atkins and rising junior Seth Kennedy. The two quarterbacks will compete into the fall. “One is not way ahead of the other right now,” Mays said. Whoever does not start at quarterback, will likely start in the secondary where they will join experienced returner Will Champion. With that much talent coming back, the Hawks should be better than most people think. How good? Those questions will start to be answered this spring. VV

This year’s game is set for May 20. Just like last year, Ralph Williams and Quest will play at 6 p.m., followed by the Manatee-Viera Charter School game at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $2 at each school and $3 at the gate on the day of the game. Though the event is not designated as a fundraiser, proceeds will benefit all four schools. Brevard County Manatees mascot Manny the Manatee will be on hand along with the Chick-fil-A Cow. The main sponsors are Perry Fiberglass, Ellingson Properties and Chick-fil-A. Last year’s game drew a record crowd of 3,222

to Space Coast Stadium in matchups featuring the same four schools. Given that Viera Charter School’s fifth and eighth grade classes were on a field trip — plus the fact that the Panthers had so much fun — an even bigger crowd is expected for this year’s contest. Damian Germain, who teaches physical education at Viera Charter, said last year’s game — the Panthers’ first in the series — was definitely a big hit at the school. “The returning veterans are very hungry to play again,” he said. ‘They thought it was absolutely great.” The games have been popular at all the participating schools through the years. Not only do families pack the stands, but the children can often be seen running around after the games to get autographs. “This is a big deal,” said Christine Ferrer, a sixthgrade teacher at Ralph Williams. “This is something the kids and the families

always look forward to. Sometimes, we have kids who have graduated who come back and watch the games.” Lori Kessel and Katie Caruso of Quest said they were pleasantly surprised by last year’s victory given that they were outnumbered by Ralph Williams. That should be different this year. “We have some new additions this year, so that will be good,” Kessel said. “We’re excited about that.” Zgonc said he expects Viera Charter School to be a much tougher opponent. “It should be a better game,” he said. “Last year, it was 15-5 and this year, I would suspect it’s going to be even closer than that. I couldn’t be happier if it’s a tight game. “Obviously, I’d love to win, but win or lose, if it is a close game and it’s fun for the fans to watch and the players to play, then that’s a victory for me. It’s a victory for this event.” VV

The Masters Jacket Tournament was played at the same time and was a handicap tournament with the flight winners being Peter Maloney, Bob Frasier, Jack Webb and John Gulla. They all competed on April 21 in a handicap playoff to determine the winner. Congratulations to Bob Frasier for recording a hole-in-one on Feb. 18 at Viera East Golf Course. He used a 5 iron on the 168yard seventh hole. This was almost duplicated in April on the same hole with the ball stopping 10 inches from the cup. VV

Viera High’s Foreman enjoys volunteer experience BY CARL KOTALA

Whether it’s working a concession stand at Viera Regional Park or working with children at Viera High’s football camp, Marco Foreman likes to volunteer his time. But this … this was something special. Foreman was one of five Brevard County high school student leaders who volunteered at the 14th annual Caring Hearts Benefit last month put on by the Cancer Care Centers Foundation of Brevard. The foundation, as described in a press release, provides assistance for cancer patients, alleviating them of their financial

burdens to allow them to focus on healing. Through financial counseling, support groups, educational programs and participation in medical research projects, the CCC Foundation’s sole focus is to help cancer patients and their families. “It sounded appealing to me because it’s a great cause — finding a cure for cancer and raising money for that,” said Foreman, a junior at Viera. “And also, I got to see a bunch of influential people in Brevard County. It’s good to meet new people and to talk to them.” Working with local leaders such as Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Foreman did everything from taking part in meetings leading up

to the benefit to holding up signs and paintings at live and silent auctions to taking out the trash. Foundation president Tom Drago requested the students because of their reputation for having integrity, being honest and hardworking. Foreman, in particular, was praised for his leadership, work ethic and charisma in helping make the event a success. The all-state defensive end got a lot out of it, too. “I enjoy doing stuff like this,” he said. “It made me feel happy to give back to other people. It does look good for college resumes, as everyone knows — volunteer hours — but my favorite part about it was just meeting new people.”

Holy Trinity students excel at Harris Challenge BY CARL KOTALA

It was a competition and a learning experience. Twenty students from Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy teacher Pam Meier’s AP Computer Science and Programming II classes took part in the fourth annual Harris/Student Design Challenge last month at the Palm Bay campus of the Harris Corp. Viera residents Miles Connolly and Erin Hu, along with Liam Kim (aka Team Nova) took third place in the judge’s presentation category while Squad 100/100, made up of Mason Baughan, William Boydstun, Matthew Levy and Jarod Smith, finished third in the

challenge category. Students from schools throughout Brevard County were asked to complete four challenges by developing Android phone applications. In one challenge, students were tasked with getting a spaceship to a docking station. They had to figure out how long the ship should accelerate, coast, decelerate and glide without crashing into the station or coming up short, all while making sure they didn’t run out of fuel. The challenges began in October and came to a conclusion April 14 when the teams brought their work to the judges. “It was definitely a big learning experience, especially since in the

programming class I’m in right now, we do C++ and we had to do all this in Java,” Connolly said. “So we basically had to learn all the basics of Java before we did all this. “It was fun to do. My teammates, we bonded a lot more because we had to have late nights at each other’s houses to work on it. Also, it just made me more interested in the subject [of making apps].” Holy Trinity had five teams take part in the challenge. Other students involved included Kasey Friedenreich, Jacob Liberman, Nicolas Underhill, Peter Laser, Luca Campanini, Josh Moisand, Justin Ganiban, Michael Ferrara, Ajay Das, Sunil Ghosal, Adam Roach, Harvey Jenkins and Matthew Rahmes. Meier said she was happy to see two of her teams place because it’s such a tough competition. She also believes the event will only continue to grow in popularity among both Holy Trinity students and the entire Brevard County community. “It shows them the complete software lifecycle,” Meier said. “So it’s taking what it’s going to be like in the real world [and showing them] how to develop an application. “It also takes what they’ve been learning in science and math, some of the physics and formulas and applying it to a real world problem.” VV

New tennis tournament rips an ace for Devereux BY DARRELL WOEHLER

The idea for an inaugural Devereux-Suntree Country Club Open Tennis Tournament came out of a Devereux Council brainstorming session, including new Devereux board member and Suntree Country Club member Liz Pinchera. This tournament’s director was Paul Davis, who is also Director of Suntree Country Club Tennis. The tournament took place at the Suntree Country Club April 1 through 3, with 58 men and women participating from throughout central

Brevard. Divisions were broken down between men, women and mixed couples. Though all the players live locally now, the background of many of them had a distinct international flavor, including Caroline Jiborn, who is originally from Sweden, and Sharon Ford from South Africa. From the cloudy, warm weather on Friday evening and Saturday, Sunday broke crisp , clear and cool, perfect weather for the finals in divisional pairings. The organization was created in 1984 when a handful of Suntree neighbors wanted to establish a way to meet one another and learn more about their community. Since then, the group has expanded its membership to 280 and has evolved into a social organization with members throughout the Space Coast focused on raising money for local charities. Events include a welcome meeting, a fashion show and a spring tea. Through the years, NOS has raised $107,000 for a variety of charities. In September, the board of directors will decide which charities to sponsor for the following year. On a lovely April afternoon, the Neighbors of Suntree (NOS) held its High Tea and purse raffle at the Suntree Country Club. Donned in festive hats, 115 members feasted on cucumber sandwiches, chicken wraps, scones, sweet frosted cakes, fruit and hot and sweet tea. Twenty-nine chic and unique purses were raffled for next year’s fundraiser recipients. Other raffles were held, including a 50/50 raffle and $50 gifts. A $100 gift card to Djon’s was also secretly tucked away in one of the purses. This past year, the nonprofit organization raised a significant amount of funds, awarding a generous $2,500 each to the following charities: AVET Project, Harmony Farms, Aging Matters, Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary, and Nana’s House. AVET Project provides free programs for veterans, active duty military and their families. Harmony Farms, in its 25th year, provides equine therapy for the disabled and veterans. Aging Matters is a not-for-profit that helps people age 60 and older achieve happy and healthy lives. Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary assists injured and sick native Florida wildlife and releases them back into the wild. Nana’s House provides homes for abused, neglected and abandoned children. Representatives from the Women’s Center received purses and a donation of $250. The Women’s Center helps women embrace healthy and self-sufficient lives.

Registration for the Suntree Master Homeowners Association summer camp for Suntree residents began March 28 and non-Suntree residents on April 25. Registration forms must be submitted to the SMHA office at 7550 Spyglass Hill Rd. The camp is limited to 115 children ages 5 through 12, and the spots fill quickly. The cost is $165 for residents and $220 for non-residents. A birth certificate is required and payment is due upon registration. The camp begins May 25 and continues Monday through Friday until July 1. Structured activities run from 9 a.m. to noon. A 200-foot ditch at the Jack McMahon Park at 7550 Spyglass Hill Road has recently been piped, filled and sodded. “I would say it just about allows us to have another youth soccer field,” said Todd Foley, general manager of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association. The work, which has taken five weeks, was completed before the Cheeseburger Paradise event April 30. “For the big events, it is a much nicer space because we’re no longer restricted by the ditch any longer and you can walk along the back of our building.” Twenty palettes of sod covered the 8,500-square-foot space, connecting it to adjacent land, adding an additional acre to the park. Adults often raise money for the Children’s Hunger Project but the children got a chance to get in on the act with their own walkathon April 16 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera. A total of 107 children walked in loops for an hour around the church grounds to fulfill pledges, with a shorter loop for the younger children. Among supporters cheering them on was Bob Barnes, executive director of the Children’s Hunger Project, which provides children with food backpacks for the weekends when they would otherwise go hungry. “We wanted to have something for the children to do and we came up with a Mercy in Motion: Children Helping Children walkathon because for the Catholic Church this is the year of mercy,” the Rev. Brad Beaupre said. Added the Rev. John Britto, “We thought we should address the hunger in Brevard County which is very acute and very shameful. The locally-owned Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall made its annual trip — complete with more than 1,000 motorcycle escorts — to be on hand at the annual Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard Reunion at Wickham Park in Melbourne. But that really is only the start of its journeys in 2016, said wall manager and reunion chairman Doc Russo. The Traveling Memorial Wall, a three-fifths-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, is owned by the Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard. The VVB is a non-profit grassroots organization that was formed and incorporated in December 1985. For the past 10 years, the wall has gone on tour throughout the U.S. For 2016, it has a total of 16 stops, Russo said. “This is the event for us and then we hit the road, pretty much across the eastern half of the country. It’s a smaller version of the original for people who don’t get the chance to go to D.C. to see it,” he said. With good weather, the reunion, now in its 29th year, drew 87,000 in 2015, he said. “It all depends on Mother Nature. The better the weather, the more folks we have come out,’’ Russo said. VV

A short time later, Carbin and company discovered the return of the parents and the babies have since graduated to “branchers.” The wildlife sanctuary volunteers have assisted

Aging Matters in Brevard’s signature fundraiser Passport to Wines Around the World was held April 16 at the Space Coast Convention Center in Cocoa and raised about $100,000. The event was capped at 320 this year to make sure there was enough room, said Aging Matters CEO Cindy Flachmeyer. “It went really well and it was very successful. This is a key piece of our budget,” she said. Launched in 2008 by Miller & Hurt Financial Group, the event featured food by The Kitchen, wine curated by Florida Wine and Spirits and a live auction by Sheriff Wayne Ivey. USO Welcome Center coming to Orlando International Airport SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

USO Central Florida announced that after nearly three years of groundwork, the organization will start construction on an Orlando International welcome center. At 3,100 square feet, it will be one of the nation’s larger facilities and one of its finest. It’s expected to open in June. The center will feature an etched glass and brick exterior, a commissary, bigscreen TVs, quiet rooms with recliners and a children’s area with video games, books and children’s furniture. It will be on the A side of

the main terminal, near ground transportation. OIA is providing the space free of charge. Officials project some 10,000 service members and family members will use the center each month, though the number could be larger. More than 700,000 activeduty troops, veterans and their families are expected to fly into or out of OIA this year. And while active duty troops — from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, reservists and National Guardsmen — are the USO’s first priority, veterans and their families are welcome at the center if

space is available. The facility will be able to accommodate 75 to 80 visitors at once. The USO expects they’ll range from deploying service members — who often take commercial flights at least part of the way — to veterans visiting Central Florida theme parks with their children. Most major U.S. airports, including Tampa, Jacksonville and Pensacola, already feature USO centers, and Miami International Airport has a military hospitality lounge.

Corporation and community support has raised roughly 60 percent of the $750,000 needed for construction, and it’s expected the USO will have the full amount by next month, though the USO will continue to raise money to cover the center’s maintenance. Northrop Grumman, Disney, SeaWorld Orlando, Universal Orlando Resort, Mears Transportation Group, Regions Bank and the American Legion are among the major contributors.

Some of the companies also have promised to provide volunteers. Up to 400 a month could be needed. Though the center’s hours have yet to be determined, the facility is expected to be open from roughly 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The USO Welcome Center at Orlando International Airport is located at 3353 W. On a local scale, we at 3Rs and Beyond looked at a simple mechanism to help reduce waste and pollution in our community. This year, we created a Green Event Certification to recognize events for promoting the 3Rs and sustainability, and are making strides towards a waste-and-pollution-free culture. We are happy that our first pre-certified event was to celebrate Earth Day when the city of Palm Bay received our seal of Green Event Certified for its April 23 event at Goode Park. Congratulations to the city and its community which is incredibly fortunate to have such caring leadership. In the end, my mother was right: Mother’s Day is every day and we should not only celebrate their unconditional love once a year, we should show them respect and appreciation every single day because, as Jane Goodall reminds us, “you cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.
