“This is my dream job,” the 33-year-old said. “My husband and I live in the Suntree community.

I loved working as the assistant principal for curriculum here. Viera is the school my son will eventually come to.

as the International Baccalaureate coordinator. It was while at Cocoa Beach that she met Mike Alba, who encouraged her to become an administrator.

Alba served as Viera’s principal for five years before leaving in November to take a job with the Brevard County School District.

Robinson had been serving as the school’s acting principal since then, but was officially named to the position last week.

Renfro said CubeSmart should be completed by August. Additionally, he noted that the other new facilities would be “coming out of the ground within three months.”

“There is going to be a lot of construction activity,” Renfro said.

Golf cart donation helps woman get around Viera

BY ERNEST ARICO There are two dates Pamela Bridges will never forget — Dec. 23, 2016 and April 4, 2019.

The first date is when the 10-year Viera resident suffered a stroke that left the right side of her body paralyzed. As a result of the stroke, Bridges suffers from aphasia. Aphasia affects a person's ability to express and understand written and spoken language. Once the underlying cause is treated, the main treatment for aphasia is speech therapy.

Because she lost her ability to drive a vehicle following her stroke, Bridges was forced to use a battery-powered golf cart to get around Viera from her Sunstone home and drive her son, Kye, to and from the Viera Charter School, her volunteer work at the Viera Pro-Health and Fitness Center and her part-time job at the Viera Children’s Academy.

At around 11:30 a.m. on the second date, Bridges was

involved in a crash with her golf cart and a vehicle near the fitness center crosswalk along Stadium Parkway.

The accident destroyed her golf cart, and she suffered a contusion to her head and injuries to her right foot that forced her to be treated for three hours at Viera Hospital.

“I thought I was lost after the accident,” Bridges said. “I didn’t know how I would get my son to school and I couldn’t work. I was desperate.”

Following the accident, 10-year-old Kye, a fifth grader at the Viera Charter School, told his teachers what had happened to his mother.

Word got around the Viera community that Kye’s mother needed help. The help came from Robbie Rosenberger, the chief financial officer for GolfCarts Unlimited.

Bridges received a Yamaha, four-passenger gas golf cart, which retails for about $5,000, from Rosenberger.

The golf cart can travel 150 miles on a tank of gas,

as opposed to the 15 to 20 miles on a battery-powered cart. Other unique features include street tires, seat belts, turn signals, brake lights, a horn, a windshield and an expandable rear compartment that can hold groceries and other items.

“It was unbelievable,” Bridges said. “It was lovely, a God sent. I couldn’t stop crying.”

Rosenberger said the golf cart is legal to drive around the sidewalks in Viera.

Rosenberger said his parents started the company in 2010, and they have three locations — The Avenue Viera, Melbourne and Titusville.

It’s time for a summer vacation!

Sailor credits lessons learned growing up in Viera for success in Navy “I was taught to never give up and not be concerned too much with what people think about you.”

BY ERNEST ARICO Since he was a child, Petty Officer 1st Class Daunte Kelly dreamed of serving in the U.S. military.

A Viera native and a 2008 Satellite High School graduate, Kelly made his dream come true when he joined the U.S. Navy.

And with his enlistment, Kelly continued a tradition of military service with family members who have previously served. Kelly said he is honored to carry on that family tradition.

“My stepfather was in the Army, my brother is currently in the Navy and my cousin was a Marine,” Kelly said.

“They all influenced me to join, especially my brother.”

Kelly also credits his success in the Navy with lessons learned while growing up in Viera.

“I was taught to never give up and not be concerned too much with what people think about you,” he said. “You just have to do your best.”

According to the U.S. Navy’s website, IWTC Virginia Beach provides a continuum of information warfare training to Navy and joint service personnel, preparing them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

The training command currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian and contract members who train more than 6,500 students every year at five different training sites.

Kelly is playing an important part in America’s focus on rebuilding readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

IWTC Virginia Beach is one of four schoolhouses for the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and also oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and

Mayport in Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning the information warfare community training.

CIWT is responsible for training enlisted cryptologic technicians, information systems technicians, intelligence specialists and electronics technicians.

CIWT also provides training to cryptologic warfare, information professional, intelligence and foreign area officers, which prepares sailors to wage battle and assure the nation’s success in this burgeoning warfare arena.

Kelly is most proud of earning four Navy Achievement medals and an Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal.

“It was an accomplishment and milestone for me,” he said. “It is rewarding because it makes you feel like you are part of something bigger.”

IWTC Virginia Beach sailors and staff are serving as a key part of the information warfare community in its mission to gain a deep understanding of the inner working of adversaries and developing unmatched knowledge during wartime.

New elementary school will emulate Quest Elementary

BY CHRIS BONANNO Officials with Brevard County Schools shared details of a planned elementary school, located southwest of Quest Elementary in Viera, that is slated to open in August 2020 at a meeting on May 21 at Quest.

As part of a presentation to 100 people in the school’s cafeteria, Sue Hann, BPS’ assistant superintendent of facilities services, stated that the school will have energy efficiency measures, new security features, new golf cart access management and will be built to accommodate future classrooms that can be relocated.

“If you look at Quest Elementary School with some minor security modifications for the entry way and other things, (this) is basically what it’s going to look like,” said Brevard County School Board District 4 representative Matt Susin.

Susin added that the new

school initially would not be filled to capacity.

“We’re looking for bringing in between 350 and about 450 kids to start it out and we’re going to build out possibly with growth,’’ Susin said. “So, you’re not going to start taking zones from all over the different places inside the Viera/Suntree area.

We’re actually going to build it out according to growth and a possible choice option.’’

Stadium Parkway also will be extended to accommodate the new school, according to Hann.

One question as it relates to the new school that has yet to be answered is the question of student allocation as it relates to existing area schools.

“What we wanted to do is introduce a couple of new ideas with the new school,” Hann said. ”We looked at the traditional way of doing student assignment where we move boundaries around and we assign children to a

school. But, we also looked at a new approach where we, for example, would consider the current boundaries for Quest and Manatee (Elementary) and just opening up those boundaries. Any parent within those areas could send their children to either Quest, Manatee or the new school.

Hann added that the decisions in this regard would be made in a “very public way” and wouldn’t begin until the fall and would conclude in the spring.

Some parents reacted

favorably to the approach school officials are taking in terms of soliciting feedback on which options work best.

“I think there’s a couple of interesting ideas,” said Brian Tarango, a parent of two daughters who attend Quest Elementary School. “It seems like they have a reasonable approach to get something. I think this is a good problem.

We have a really good school that’s over capacity that we’re trying to get lower capacity and we’re building a brand new school.”

“Either way, we’ll have a

choice,” said Loretta Gribble, a parent of two children at Quest who was pleased her children would get to stay at the school with either plan.

“I’m glad they’re building one (a new school) now.”

The name of the school, along with its mascot and colors, also has not been decided. Officials say a school name will be addressed in early 2020, when a new school principal is hired.

“The School Board will hire the principal and will make the decision on the name,’’ Hann said. “But the principal leads the process. So, we want to get the principal on board and they will engage with the community.”

The Brevard County School Board also was prepared to consider the construction project for the site at a May 28 meeting. Hann noted that a groundbreaking ceremony for the new school would be held sometime in the fall, likely in September. VV

Brevard embraces Pride as they go for another Cowles Cup trophy

The USSSA Pride are coming off one the most dominating seasons in all of professional sports … and Brevard County softball fans are paying attention.

“I think (people) are definitely taking notice in the area,” said Pride first baseman Alex Powers, who is a former Eau Gallie High School and Florida State standout.

“People are kind of rallying behind us now. They know who we are. They know what the (USSSA Space Coast) Complex is like. They

definitely get excited. There’s definitely a little bit of a hype. People are ready.”

The Pride went 45-5 last season, winning the National Pro Fastpitch Softball Cowles Cup for the fourth time in 10 seasons. They’ve won seven regular-season titles and five in a row.

This year, the quest will be to hoist that trophy one more time.

“A championship is always the end goal,” Powers said.

“The team at this level, and at this age group has never made it this far,” said Kara Mehalick, whose son Cole plays on the 12U team. “We’ve been to regionals, but we’ve been eliminated early on; they’ve never actually won it.”

At the state level, players and parents alike were

cheering for the boys on the field. “(Kara) didn’t have a voice for about three or four days,” said Rich Mehalick, Kara’s husband.

“It was crazy, it was exciting,” Kara Mehalick added. “The regional part of it was (especially) hard for the boys because we did have some injuries, we had some kids out, so we were pretty limited on our substitutions.

Viera wins second consecutive CCC sports trophy

BY CARL KOTALA It was an unprecedented year for the Viera High School athletics program … and the Hawks have the hardware to prove it.

For the second year in a row, and the sixth time in Viera history, the Hawks have won the Barbara Caywood Cape Coast Conference AllSports trophy.

“As a program, it shows our commitment to our student-athletes, the coaches and each and every program,” Viera athletic director Chris Gallagher said. “There’s multisport athlete participation, a commitment by athletes and coaches to improve each and every year. Because each year you win it, now you’ve got a bigger target on your back.”

Target or not, the Hawks were the team to beat in a

number of different sports throughout the year.

Of the 23 varsity teams Viera fielded, six won or shared a Cape Coast Conference title and a schoolrecord 13 teams won district championships.

The Viera girls swimming team and the boys track team each won their first CCC titles this season.

Points are awarded based on where teams place in CCC competition among the 16 public schools. Conference champions receive 16 points, for example, with the remaining points distributed in descending order.

Viera had 20 teams finish in at least the top half of the conference during their respective seasons.

and girls cross country; boys bowling; girls soccer; softball; girls lacrosse; boys and girls tennis, and boys and girls track.

On top of that, it was a good season in the classroom as Viera softball had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.789 that was No. 1 among all Class 7A teams in Florida.

In fact, all 23 Viera sports programs qualified for the FHSAA Academic team championship, which requires a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0.

All of those accomplishments, Gallagher said, not only show how balanced the Hawks programs are, but that their student-athletes and coaches are dedicated to putting in hard work both on and off the field to help achieve the success the program has shown this year. VV

Eat My Crust 5K bolsters community through donations SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

The Special Olympics of Brevard and the Early Steps Program of Brevard County won’t be the only beneficiaries of the eighth annual Eat My Crust 5K. Through the Viera High School Track Renovation Project, Viera High School will get a new track. The modern track will allow the high school to host district and regional meets and perhaps a future state championship competition in track and field.

The community also will benefit since local runners will have select times to do their speed workouts or slower jaunts.

Holy Trinity’s Nimmo signs to play softball at Niagara University

BY CARL KOTALA Olivia Nimmo wasn’t really planning on playing college softball.

Now, the Holy Trinity senior is going Division I. Nimmo signed to play at Niagara University last month after a whirlwind courtship sparked by her neighbor and Niagara University alumnus, Dave Costello.

“I looked at it based off what he told me, and the (Niagara) coach was really interested in me,” Nimmo said. “I gave him all my information and he offered me a full ride and I took it.”

Costello used to coach track and field at Viera High School, which is where Nimmo went to school before transferring to Holy Trinity for her junior and senior seasons.

Although she played catcher and third base at Holy Trinity, she has been recruited by Niagara to play center field. The position is hardly foreign to her since she played center field in travel ball and at Viera.

“They have two sophomore catchers up there and they need outfielders, so I said I’d do that,” she said.

“I love playing center field.

Nimmo plans to major in biology at Niagara with the idea of becoming either an orthopedic or flight surgeon in the Air Force or Navy.

She might not have planned on playing college softball before the Niagara offer came along, but she always has planned on joining the military after college. Her father was in the

Navy and her brother is in the Air Force.

“Just the fact that I could help serve my country and do medical … that’s been my goal since I was young,” she said.

Nimmo plans to visit the Niagara campus soon.

She is going to have to get used to a few new things such as snow and colder weather. Nimmo is looking forward to getting to know Purple Eagles coach Larry Puzan and her new Niagara teammates.

“He’s an awesome guy,” she said of Puzan. “He made me want to go there, even without looking. Everyone I’ve talked to there, the people in admissions, they’ve all been super helpful.

Viera football players eager to step into new, bigger roles

BY CARL KOTALA It’s the way of life for all high school teams regardless of sport.

Players graduate. New players come in. And others, well, it’s their chance to step up into bigger roles.

That’s the way it will be for the Viera High School football team, which is coming off a year in which it reached the regional semifinals and just graduated a number of high-impact seniors, including a couple of record-breaking receivers.

So, who will step into new, or bigger roles for the Hawks in 2019?

One of the biggest question marks about the 2019 team will be how well it can replace skill players such as receivers Sean Atkins and Shamaar Mohr. But the guys Viera will be counting on next season don’t seem to be lacking in speed, and they certainly have talent.

“On the offensive side of the football, (wide receiver) Jeremiah Housey is maturing tremendously,” Smith said.

“I think he’s going to be an exciting playmaker for us.

His brother (running back Jalen Housey) is going to be a really good running back for us also. Between him and TJ (Johnson), it’s going to be a nice little one-two punch.

“The receiving corps, everyone’s asking how we’re going to replace Sean and Shamaar, I think (Jeremiah)

Housey and (Davis) Mallinger are going to fill those two roles pretty well.”

Mallinger, who transferred to Viera following the 2018 season, had quite a spring game debut, scoring on a 5-yard run and catching a 12-yard touchdown pass. It would seem Viera’s offense, with multiple receiver sets, fits Mallinger’s game more than the run-heavy offense he previously played in.

“I like this offense because we spread the ball around,” Mallinger said. “I get the ball now in the open field and can do what I’m good at.”

In addition to being a vertical threat, Mallinger wants to be a leader on the Hawks once he gets a firm grasp on everything the Hawks are doing. And if the West Orange game was an indication, he’ll be a big hitter in Viera’s secondary as well.

“He’s got this moxie like he just likes to hit,” Smith said. “I like it. He brings a little attitude to the defense.”

Viera Charter students help with clothing, assistance

Viera Charter School students are helping students less fortunate, sharing clothing they’ve grown out of as they would share with their own little brothers and sisters.

In addition to recent donations of like-new clothing, the students presented a check for $1,000 on May 20 so students at Endeavour Elementary School in Cocoa can get emergency needs met and receive food for their families from a new pantry set up at the school.

“We are so fortunate at this school to have what we have,” said Student Council President Allison Otero, a graduating eighth grader.

“We love the thought of helping students who don’t

have what we have, by giving them a little bit more.”

Endeavour is located in the middle of the most economically challenged residential community in Brevard County.

“We are gifted with what we have, blessed, fortunate,” said Mary Rabun, a VCS World Geography teacher and faculty advisor for the Student Council. “We have an abundance of resources, both as a school and for many of the families here.

Many families may not think of how they can volunteer at their school, or what they can send in as a donation.

They are trying to survive day to day. It’s great that the students here are thrilled to share what they have.”

Viera’s FCCLA Club wins national award for work with community

BY CARL KOTALA Some of them joined just for the competition, but what they got out of it was so much more.

And now, they’ve got a national award to show for it.

The Viera High School/ Space Coast Junior/Senior High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club was named the 2019 National first-place winner of the Families First Award at a recent ceremony in Orlando.

As the national winner, the club — which features 34 Viera students and one from Space Coast — will receive a $1,000 award presented to them at the 2019 FCCLA National Leadership Conference, which will be held June 30 to July 4 in Anaheim, California.

Carrie Humphrys, the Viera CTE department chair, fashion and interior design instructor and FCCLA sponsor, sent out a news release in which she described Families First as a peer education program

created by the FCCLA and designed to give children a better understanding of how families work and learn skills to become family members.

The VHS/SCHS FCCLA chapter partnered with Braveheart Properties in Cocoa for its project.

Braveheart helps provide attractive, affordable housing in a safe neighborhood to intact families, Humphrys wrote in her release.

Braveheart is the only organization in Brevard County that helps families with any male older than the age of 12, whether that be a parent or a sibling.

Through the project, students donated chickens, clothing, furniture, housewares, school supplies and holiday gifts to Braveheart families.

“I think I got a lot out of it,” Viera freshman Elise Neuman said. “Giving back to the community is really something special. Seeing them and how they really light up when they thank you is really cool.”

Viera freshman DJ Hosmer said she joined the FCCLA for several reasons.

“I joined it because it seemed like a really fun and interesting club,” she said. “And then, there’s the competition aspect as well.”

Indeed, there are 35 categories in which students

can compete for awards. Three club members have qualified to compete in National STAR events. Abigail Muenchow will compete in a focus on children, Kylie Mulligan in fashion design, and Hosmer in the Chapter Service Project.

But clearly, the category that made the biggest impact on

students was the Families First project they started last spring.

“I wanted to join for the competitions because the competitions really allow you to pursue what you’re interested in,” Viera junior Shannon Lee said. “Mine, personally, is interior design.

That’s what I’m focusing on.

“But I joined the club and realized it’s more than about the competitions. It’s about the people in the club and the service projects we do inside of it as well.”

Humphrys couldn’t be prouder of the student’s accomplishments in helping out the community.

“I think it’s phenomenal that they worked so hard to support other people and that they realized … in Family Consumer Science, the focus is (about) putting families first,” she said.

“Choosing an organization (to support) that also helps families, it just shows that they understand our purpose and our mission.” VV

Delegates also will get to observe a live surgery and even submit questions for the surgeon to answer in real time during the procedure.

That’s something Kerner is looking forward to.

“I always watch doctor shows,” she said. “People get grossed out with it. I’m just like, ‘Oh, this is cool.’ ” The sophomore also is looking forward to hearing speakers such as 2007 Nobel Prize winner Dr. Mario Capecchi and Dr. Gary Richter, who is billed as “America’s favorite veterinarian.”

That’s because Kerner would like to one day

become a zoologist.

“I’ve always been kind of obsessed with animals,” she said. “It’s really exciting to me for some reason. I just kind of click with it.

Everybody has their thing and (animals are) mine.”

Kerner’s mother, Susan Sears, hopes the Congress can give her daughter a clear path

to get the kind of education she will need to realize her dreams.

“I thought this was a good opportunity because she could potentially meet a mentor,” Sears said. “That’s what they promote, the potential to meet a mentor and possibly get scholarships out of it. I’m hoping that will be an inspiration for her.” VV

Viera student headed to Congress of Future Medical Leaders

Seville Kerner has always loved biology, and she’s always been obsessed with animals.

This month, the Viera High School sophomore is going to get a chance to listen to some Nobel Prize winning experts in both fields in what could turn out to be an experience of a lifetime.

Kerner has been named as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, which will take place June 23 to 25 on the University of Massachusetts’ Lowell campus. According to the event’s website, the Congress is an honors-only program for students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher who want to become physicians or go into medical science.

The purpose of the event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct those top-notch students in order to help them ultimately follow their dreams.

Treasure hunt highlights Viera girl’s birthday party

BY ERNEST ARICO A 14-year-old Viera girl and her friends earned the chance to do a unique birthday treasure hunt at The Avenue Viera on April 19.

Abigail Watson, an eighth grader at West Shore Junior/ Senior High School and a big fan of “The Amazing Race,” an American TV reality show, was joined by 13 girls and two boys to search for clues to solve the puzzle and win prizes.

The idea for the treasure hunt was the brainstorm of Abigail’s mother, Karin Watson, and her grandmother, Diane Tinucci.

“Because they are pre-teen kids you have to come up with something that they will enjoy and also challenge them,” said

Tinucci, a retired teacher and Rockledge resident. “We picked The Avenue Viera because many of the kids enjoy shopping there.”

The children were given nine clues — one of them was a dummy story inside the Viera Voice — and placed at various locations throughout The Avenue. Twenty copies of the Viera Voice were donated for the treasure hunt.

One of the clues took the participants to the 9/11 Memorial Plaza near the AMC Theatre water fountain.

The kids had to place American flags and search for another clue.

The three-hour treasure hunt began and ended at The Avenue’s center courtyard near Panera Bread.

Karin Watson, a physical therapist for Brevard Public Schools and a Viera resident since 2001, said many of The Avenue shop owners were willing participants in the treasure hunt.

“Abigail was beyond excited,” she said. “The hardest part was keeping her from finding out where all the clues were.”

Tinucci said the children were divided into three teams of four or five children and received maps of The Avenue. At the end of the treasure hunt, the children were awarded “medals” (gift cards) from Amazon, Starbucks and Dunkin’.

“The kids had a great time,” Watson said. VV

Start-Up Viera showcases female entrepreneurs

It’s important that everyone gets an equal opportunity to work and thrive in the business sector. Groups such as the Bisk College of Business at the Florida Institute of Technology are working hard to assure just that.

From May 9 to 11, Florida Tech-sponsored weVENTURE partnered with The Avenue Viera to host Start-Up Viera.

Six local female entrepreneurs held a marketplace in front of the AMC Viera.

WeVENTURE is a nonprofit organization that was launched at Florida Tech in 2007 for the purpose of “accelerating growth for female entrepreneurs by providing customized coaching and mentoring, business education and

purposeful networking programs,” according to Florida Tech officials.

at Florida Tech. “We started back in 2007 as a women’s business center program, and that has evolved to be able to help with everything from small, start-up businesses to growth-based businesses (and not just women, men are assisted as well), and our whole goal is to assist women and entrepreneurs to become economically sustainable.”

Lemp said female entrepreneurs face challenges in today’s business market.

“One of the biggest challenges is always going to be access to capital,” Lemp explained. “One of the things that we have found is that (for) venture capital — 75 percent of that goes to men.

Part of the problem is that entrepreneurs don’t have all that many female investors.

“More female investors mean more investment into female start-ups.” Lemp said.

WeVENTURE seeks to not only support women in starting their businesses, but also to support the idea of women in business roles.

“Our whole goal is to make women in business ownership more accessible,” Lemp added, “by helping to provide education and some training opportunities, internship coaching, all that kind of (support).”

A prime reason for businesses seeking out the currently unoccupied presence of land is the recent opening of a diamond interchange, which links an

“As with any interstate interchange, certainly new ones, that's generally a focal point of development for the community," said Eva Rey, director of community management with The Viera Company. “We did anticipate that interest.”

She added that an area west of the Interstate

95 overpass near Viera Boulevard has even more potential for growth.

“Ideally, what we would like to see in there is sort of a corporate park. Businesses that need that interstate access relocate to the area,” Rey said of a space that she described as “north of Viera Regional Park all the way to Viera Boulevard west to Stadium Parkway.” VV

Viera junior Barai headed to international HOSA event

BY CARL KOTALA Shortly after taking the Dental Terminology test at this year’s HOSA state competition, Viera High School junior Mrunal Barai was asked by several classmates how badly he wanted to advance to the international event … on a scale from 1 to 10.

“I said, ‘25,’ ” Barai recalled.

Twenty-five it is.

Barai not only qualified for the international competition that will be held from June 19 to 22, he became the first Viera student to win a statelevel competition at the Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, (HOSA).

It was only the second year the Viera team, led by Viera teacher and HOSA advisor Frances Johnston, had competed in the state event.

Last year, Pritom “Peter” Karmaker finished second in the state, also in Dental Terminology, and went on to finish 11th at nationals.

“There’s this moment when it clicks in your mind that you have to do something,” he said. “My mom tells me all the time, to achieve it, you have to realize it. So, once you realize that you have to do this, you work hard toward it, and you reach your goal.

“My mom keeps telling me if you realize it earlier, the better it will be for you

because then you know how to plan your schedule of what you’re going to do over time.”

Barai planned to give himself at least a month to study before heading to the 42nd annual International Leadership Conference, which will take place at Disney World’s Coronado Springs.

Barai is aiming high.

“I would say the competition level has tripled or quadrupled,” he said.

“Everyone wants a spot to be recognized as one of the top 10 in the world, and so do I. “I have my book ready.

I’m going to start studying soon. So, I have a month (or so) to prepare everything, refresh everything in my mind, and hopefully score at internationals. Mrs. J. tells me I have to score.

“She tells me don’t even think about the top 10, just study and get first. She knows I can do it. She tells me I can do it. Same with my mom and dad. They say (I) have the determination, so go for it.” VV

Grant helps Rotary Club of Suntree’s Honduras project

After more than 18 months of planning and administrative work, the Rotary Club of Suntree Foundation has received a Rotary International Global Grant in the amount of $35,200. The proceeds of this grant will be used to procure a container of medical equipment and supplies which will be sent to a hospital in La Paz, Honduras.

The container is valued at approximately $400,000.

Make early preparations for hurricane season

BY CHRIS BONANNO More than 100 people gathered at the Springs of Suntree clubhouse on May 8 as the Suntree Master Homeowners Association and the Springs of Suntree teamed with the Brevard County Office of Emergency Management to host a hurricane preparedness event.

“Obviously, we want the majority of people to be informed,” said Todd Foley, the SMHA general manager. “I’d rather them ask the questions now than the day before or immediately afterward when our stress levels are high and we’re trying to put the communities together.

It’s definitely beneficial that they have the answer to their questions at this point.”

One of the speakers, John Scott, who serves as operations manager for Brevard Emergency Management, discussed how residents should make decisions as they relate to evacuations.

“We very much want to educate folks on the risks they’re facing and make sure they understand what the true level of need they have (is). So are they in a place where they can safely stay? Or are they in a place where they need to evacuate?,” Scott said.

Scott discussed the circumstances under which Viera and Suntree residents should and shouldn’t leave

as well, noting that those in mobile homes should evacuate as ordered and that those in constructed housing should evaluate the integrity of their roof, windows and doors. He suggested some residents might want to have wind mitigation tests performed on their homes.

“Obviously, the newer the home, the stronger the building codes so that helps quite a bit,” Scott said. “The

other big thing I’ll talk about is just in general. Florida has an older population, an aging population and all of us have medical issues. So, make sure that that’s part of it. The need for water from a reliable source, the need for a reliable connectivity to power. If your health depends on either of those two, make sure you’re going somewhere where you can do that.”

It was the second-annual event, with the first being held in August last year.

“We wanted to make sure that the residents have all the information necessary to be safe and knowledgeable during hurricane season,” Parente added.

Melvin the Basset Hound won’t win any foot races, but he was at his handsome best for Viera’s Pet Fest Derby Day, an inaugural event held May 4 at the Viera Town Center Park.

Dogs were judged for the best hat in three fun categories — Classic, Most Outrageous and Colorful. After that, a Best of Show winner was chosen. The Pet Fest Derby Day was held before the televised 145th Kentucky Derby, an event where fancy hats are adorned by fans in the stands of the prestigious horse race.

Melvin prevailed in the Classic category and edged Allie the Yorkshire Terrier and Mudge the Goldendoodle for Best of Show honors. Allie prevailed in the Colorful category, and Mudge was the top dog in the Most Outrageous category.

Petworks provided the Best of Show gift basket.

The Viera Community Institute sponsored the event and awarded gift certificates.

Laurie Duda hand painted the three trophies.

Melvin is owned by Desiree Peterson, Allie is owned by Casey Sheets and Mudge is owned by Kiley Dwenger.

Enthusiasm boosts annual Armed Forces Day celebration

BY CHRIS BONANNO Hundreds of local residents gathered to pay tribute to military heroes and, in many cases, get a great workout as the Armed Forces Day Rescue 5K & Community Fair was held May 18 at The Avenue Viera.

The early-morning gathering, formerly known as the Rescue Warrior Run, began the day’s festivities and included more than 300 participants, according to event organizer Robin Simons. The race course took participants in and around The Avenue Viera in what Simons called “great weather.”

Following that, the second annual Armed Forces Day Community Fair was held in The Avenue Viera’s center courtyard.

There, the fair featured the presence of a number of military and veteransaffiliated organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers Association

of America. It also included vendors, exhibits, prizes and demos, according to the organizers.

“I think it’s great,” said Steve Bond, the second vice president with the chapter and a former U.S. Army Ranger. “Brevard County’s one of the highest-density areas for veterans in the United States. … I think that we’ve got great support here in Brevard.”

The event also had live music from the band “Half Step Down,” with Simons serving as the lead vocalist.

“We’ve just been having a great time this afternoon and we’ve made it this year an Armed Forces event on (the nationally commemorated) Armed Forces Day of May 18 of 2009,” Simons said. “… This year, we’ve doubled in size for our runners and tripled in size for the community fair participants.”

“It’s everything. I mean, we are a military town and we have all five branches here. So, it’s a very important thing for our community to understand what’s

The day was capped off with a “Military Bride to Be” presentation where one lucky soon-to-be bride received a free wedding dress courtesy of Nicole Maree Bridal.

All proceeds from the event were slated to go toward the Rescue Special Functions Committee, which is based out of the 920th and of which Simons is president, and the Military Affairs Council, organizers added.

Local law enforcement praises bill protecting K9s

BY CHRIS BONANNO Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill May 1 that strengthens the penalties for those convicted of wanting to harm police K9s.

According to a release from the governor’s office, the penalties for “intentionally and knowingly causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or death to police canines or horses, fire canines or search and rescue canines” has been increased from a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony.

“Public safety K9s play a vital role in keeping people safe and preventing crime.

I applaud the governor for putting public safety at the forefront and looking out for our furry heroes,” Schollmeyer said.

“Like the officers they serve with, these animals are frequently placed in harm’s way for the safety of our communities and I was proud to sign this bill today that increases the penalty for harming them,” said DeSantis in a release. VV

Seminoles’ gritty history part of Florida’s fascinating lore Spinning tales about the Florida Seminoles. In the 1700s, facing conflict with British-controlled northern colonies and other tribes, some Native Americans (significantly Creek) migrated to Spanish Florida, joined by other tribes.

Consequently, they became known as Seminoles, from the Spanish label “Cimarron,” denoting wild, runaway, or free people — resisting capture and slavery.

Eventually, the Florida Seminoles formed a strong, protective union against slavery with the Black Seminoles — some were free blacks but most were Gullah escaped slaves (maroons) from the rice plantations of South Carolina and later Georgia (Low Country). Some

Seminole leaders held Black Seminoles as so-called slaves, but they were more free than with whites or other tribes.

Intermarriage occurred.

Seminole homes were chickees, built in large villages.

They were raised platform shelters with thick cypress logs and thatched roofs made from palmetto fiber.

Since there were no walls, canvas or hide tarps offered protection during storms.

For sustenance, wild nuts and fruits were gathered,

and women were productive farmers. Crops were raised unattended behind homes, overwhelmed with weeds and lacking irrigation; nature was the caretaker. Corn, the main yield, was used for bread, pancakes, or the soft drink (sofkee) — still popular today.

Sugarcane was a sweetener.

The hardy Seminole pumpkin, often planted at the base of a dead oak, vigorously climbed the limbs. Eager young braves retrieved the fruit, flaunting their skills.

Men hunted, fished and raised cattle abandoned by the Spanish. Hunters pursued creatures, including birds, turkeys, or alligators. To capture venison, grass was burned and luscious new growth attracted the animal.

Fishing, probably from a

cypress dugout canoe, often involved spears, sometimes tipped with the spiked tails of stingrays or horseshoe crabs. Turkey or deer bones were common for fishing pole hooks.

Daily meals were enjoyed in the communal eating house, the biggest house in the village. Women prepared food. Prevalent was corn bread, soups and stews.

Certainly, trading posts were welcomed. Pelts and hides were exchanged for items such as staples, cookware, tools, guns and vivid cloth.

The fertile and nurtured land of the Seminoles was inevitably pursued by those who were better equipped for battle. Aggression resulted in the three Seminole

Wars from 1817 to 1858.

Many Native Americans were forced to Oklahoma reservations. Few remained (200 to 300) concealed in the Everglades — proudly the “Unconquered.”

Today, devastating encounters belong to history.

Seminoles now maintain enterprises such as casinos, high-stakes bingo, tourism and the cattle business. Their vibrant patchwork clothing, originally fabricated from scraps, is much in demand, as are palmetto dolls.

Whether they live on reservations or elsewhere, these Native Americans continue to preserve their Florida culture and homeland. VV

Schools slowly move away from foam trays Wishes can come true — activism and leadership might help make them happen.

All across the country, environmentally minded students and parents have been vocal about the

use of polystyrene trays in schools, wanting to see them removed from cafeterias and replaced with compostable, reusable or recyclable alternatives.

A Washington Post article from 2012 reported how

difficult it was to remove polystyrene (commonly referred to as Styrofoam) trays from schools. Even though student activists pushed for changing the trays, most school districts were reluctant, claiming

that the cost increase was simply prohibitive.

“I hate serving on Styrofoam, but when push comes to shove, you have to decide where you’re going to spend the money,” the director of nutrition services for Portland Public Schools said at the time.

To curb that obstacle and get rid of trays made from a component, styrene, listed as a “possible” human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency, some school districts got creative.

New York City's Department of Education joined forces with schools districts from Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Orlando and Chicago to found the Urban School Food Alliance in 2012 to use their combined purchasing power to drive the change. That made possible for those districts to replace foam trays with a compostable, foam-free alternative in the fall of 2014.

That was a good idea, but membership to the Alliance was limited to school districts of equivalent size.

Joining that alliance was not an option for smaller districts such as Brevard.

That didn’t stop Brevard from pursuing other options to replace foam trays.

With almost five million trays used in 83 schools each school year, Brevard Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) realized that a more environmentally friendly alternative should be used in our schools.

Brevard FNS had been looking for more sustainable, but still affordable, options and had schools test different trays. According to Laurie Conlin, the District Food & Nutrition manager, cafeteria managers experienced some quality issues with certain brands — trays not separating easily on the serving line, or bending in half and breaking, or absorbing too much sauce or heat from food.

At the end of the test period, a five-compartment lunch tray made from sugarcane bagasse and bamboo was selected

and the change was implemented in 2017.

Even with a cost increase of $0.035 per tray and some operational downside that called for trays to be separated before the start of meal service in order to keep the lunch line moving efficiently, Brevard FNS opted to stick with the more sustainable alternative and recognize that the “environmental benefits far outweigh the cost.”

According to Conlin, the community has been supportive of the change and as one of those parents advocating for the change since 2015 (see http://vieravoice.com/ September-2015/Back-toschool-blues/), the news of the replacement of foam trays was encouraging.

I am proud that Brevard FNS took that task on to help our school district further its move to become more environmentally responsible.

More districts around the country are making the transition.

In 2017, Baltimore, Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia joined the Urban School Food Alliance.

Just this past April, the Connecticut State Senate, in a bipartisan 29-6 vote, passed Senate Bill 229 to ban polystyrene trays in schools, colleges and universities. Under that bill, which awaits action by the state House of Representatives, each school district is required to develop a plan to discontinue the use of polystyrene trays by July 1, 2021.

Others, like the school districts in North Carolina, are slowly steering away from foam trays. With the assistance of Every Tray Counts, a non-profit organization, districts are eliminating foam trays and some are embracing composting as well.

According to The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, in districts where composting is a practice, “students serve as helpers each day, sorting the compostable trash, which teaches them to be good stewards of what they’re using and throwing away.”

The tray is the first step but we don’t have to stop there. Maybe here in Brevard County, we will soon make composting in our schools a reality, too.
