In this edition of Senior Life, you will find several veterans’ stories, including the main event this month — Memorial Day commemorations. We will tell you about the Memorial Day ceremonies and commemorations in Brevard County, including events at the Cape Canaveral Cemetery and the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center.

Memorial Day is set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation. There are many ways to honor the memories of the fallen, among them is flying the U.S. flag, attending a memorial ceremony, parade or other observance and even posting a tribute on social media.

In addition to our story and listing of Memorial Day events, we bring you several other veterans’ stories. The Florida 38th All Veterans Reunion will be held May 3 through 10 at Wickham Park in Melbourne.

We also tell you about a military enlistment ceremony in which about 250 newly enlisted young men and women officially joined the different military branches. It is the second year for the mass enlistment ceremony in Brevard County.

There are just some of the military stories. In addition to those, there is hobbies and our newest series, Remembering 9/11, which you won’t want to miss reading. This series will run through September, the 25th anniversary of the horrific terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001.

In this edition, we tell you about the Erna Nixon Park. It is a 54-acre wooded park with about a half-mile boardwalk through Florida hammock. The park occasionally offers a moonlight stroll. Visitors stroll the boardwalk and stop in different areas to listen to musicians play and sing. Erna Nixon Park is a gem that offers a respite from the bustle of nearby commercial areas. It has a nature center, a butterfly garden, picnic tables and restrooms.

These stories are just a sample of what we have for you in this edition of Senior Life.

This year’s Expo will be at the Viera Regional Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. The event marks the release of the 20th edition of the Boomer Guide — two decades of providing information to Brevard County residents.

The free magazine makes it easy to find local clubs, organizations, support groups, senior centers, emergency hurricane information, sports, veteran meetings and more. It’s essential for both newcomers and longtime Floridians.

“We are excited to present the latest edition of the Boomer Guide because we know that our readers have been waiting for it,” said Jill Blue, the publisher of the Boomer Guide, Senior Life and Viera Voice. “This will be another exciting BoomerFest! Expo. So come on out for the Expo and pick up your copy of the magazine.”

BoomerFest! will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 24. Orlando Health — Melbourne, Rhodes Law. P.A. and Parrish Medical Center will be the presenting sponsors.

Attendees will enjoy live music as they visit exhibitors, watch demonstrations, seminars and learn about valuable resources. There will be giveaways, and the first 250 lucky attendees will receive an exclusive tote bag. Guests will enjoy snacks and a coffee bar sponsored by Lucky Goat Coffee Company.

A mobile shredding truck will be available on site sponsored by Health First.

A decade in the making — amphitheater, park opens

BY ERNIE DORLING Nearly 10 years after the vision first took shape, The Amphitheater at Brevard Veterans Memorial Park opened its gates. It marks the completion of a project designed to honor the county’s large veteran population while creating a new destination for Space Coast residents and visitors.

The $8.2 million park and outdoor amphitheater was formally dedicated Thursday, April 23 in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, elected officials and community leaders.

For Donn Weaver, who has helped guide the project from its earliest days, the opening represents more than the completion of a construction project.

“This gives us the opportunity to have the most impact we could possibly ever hope to have to thank our veterans here in Brevard for their service to this great country,” Weaver said.

The venue features seating space for 2,000 people, with lawn and standing-room space that can accommodate up to 5,000 guests for concerts, ceremonies and community celebrations.

From command to craft: retired Navy commander finds purpose in leatherwork

BY ERNIE DORLING After two decades of service in the U.S. Navy, retired Cmdr.

John McMorrough found himself returning to something far quieter than command at sea — the steady, deliberate rhythm of his hands shaping leather.

Raised on a family farm, McMorrough learned early the value of working with his hands. As a teenager, he became known among friends and neighbors for his ability to repair and refurbish old firearms.

“I am entirely self-taught,” McMorrough said. “I spent hours tinkering, learning through trial and error, bringing worn and broken pieces back to life.”

U.S. Navy retired Comdr. John McMorrough taught himself the art of leatherwork by studying online videos and tutorials.

What began as a favor for friends soon became a trusted skill.

About a decade ago, McMorrough’s focus shifted.

Curious and eager to learn something new, he began exploring leatherwork — initially as a complement to his

interest in knives and firearms. Like in his early days in gunsmithing, he turned to self-instruction, studying online videos and tutorials on saddle stitching, leather forming and shaping techniques.

“I just kept practicing,” McMorrough said. “Every time I made something, I tried to improve it.”

Today, his work centers on leather goods designed for practical use — knife sheaths, letter opener cases and custom inlays.

“Each piece begins the same way — with a sketch,” he said. For McMorrough, planning is essential.

The drawing allows him to study dimensions and ensure the finished product will fit precisely as intended.

carefully selects the type of leather, applies dye and finishes it with a polished coating. Stitching comes next, with options ranging from single row to double or crossover saddle stitching, depending on the durability and style he wants to achieve.

“I just kept practicing.

Like any craftsman, McMorrough has learned as much from mistakes as from successes. One of his most memorable missteps was using a fullstrength commercial dye, which left the leather blotchy and uneven.

“I had to figure out how to fix it,” he said. “That’s when I learned the importance of diluting it properly.”

For McMorrough, leatherworking

is more than just a hobby; it’s part of a broader philosophy he follows in retirement. He describes it as a three-pronged approach to staying sharp: walking for physical health, writing to keep his mind engaged and leatherworking to maintain hand-eye coordination.

Despite the time and care he invests in it, McMorrough doesn’t sell his work. Instead, he gives it away to friends, turning each item into a personal gift rather than a commercial product.

His advice to beginners is simple — start small.

“Practice each step on scrap leather before trying to make something complete,” he said. “Take your time and learn the process.”

For McMorrough, the reward isn’t in perfection — but in the heartfelt thanks he receives from friends, some of whom he hasn’t seen in 20 years. They receive a beautiful leather gift and, of course, he plods along in the steady pursuit of getting better, one stitch at a time. SL

First female space mission commander greets Brevard to promote ‘Spacewoman’ Andrew Rechenberg of Cocoa Beach.

He did technical support for the International Space Station and now works with Boeing’s Starliner.

Elisa Todd of Vero Beach said she’s followed space exploration all her life, traveling to Kennedy Space Center to meet astronaut speakers there.

BY LINDA JUMP Retired Air Force Col. Eileen Collins returned to the Space Coast last month to greet hundreds of Brevard residents who viewed “Spacewoman,” a documentary based on her memoir about becoming the first woman to command and pilot a space shuttle mission.

Collins’ 2021 memoir “Through the Glass Ceiling for the Stars” led to the 90-minute movie premiered in Brevard County at Premier Theaters at the Oaks in Melbourne.

“The timing was perfect, with the recent success of the Artemis I mission. We’re nearly sold out for tonight’s meet and greet,” said Erick Crank, the night manager of the theater. He said writer-director Hannah Berryman was also expected, but couldn’t attend.

The film, released last fall, was shown at several film festivals and will be available for streaming. The movie highlights not only Collins’ challenges growing up poor with an alcoholic father separated from the family and a suicidal mother, but also the difficulties of raising a son and daughter while taking the nail-biting risks of space flight.

“I didn’t expect so much about my family,” Collins admitted.

Collins got her pilot’s license at age 19 and served 26 years in the Air Force. She was one of the first four women accepted to train as military test pilots and has flown 7,000 hours in 30 different aircraft. She spent 872

“I always wanted to be Capt. Kirk,” she quipped. She retired from the Air Force in 2005 and NASA the following year to talk extensively about space exploration.

Her Discovery flights in 1995 piloting STS 63 and 1999 commanding STS 93, plus two additional flights included visits to the MIR Soviet and International Space Stations. Collins cited focus, discipline, intentional listening, humility and training for her success.

She urged listeners to curb cellphone use.

“Scrolling makes you dumb. Go to the library and read good books. Read the classics. Read what interests you.”

After the film, brief talk and questions, Collins greeted more than 150 people for hours. Jon A. McBride II, son of the late test pilot, astronaut and administrator for NASA and others took out their cellphones for photos of Collins. Among them were former colleagues and locals interested in space exploration.

“I’ve wanted to be an astronaut since I was eight years old. I’ve applied twice and I’ll keep applying until they say I’m too old,” said

The Brevard Veterans Memorial Center has partnered with several organizations to help bring activity to the venue, including the Space Coast Symphony, which will now make The Amphitheater its outdoor home for upcoming performances. Brevard Public Schools is also expected to use the site for student events and community programming.

Beyond the performance space, the park features a two-and-a-halfkilometer walking, jogging and biking trail open to the public free of charge.

The loop is also designed to support community 5K races, with participants completing two laps around the grounds.

Dean Schaaf, the president of the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center, said the park’s impact will reach far beyond veterans services.

“The impact of this park will help businesses and promote community to the people who use the Vets Center,” Schaaf said.

With veterans estimated to make up nearly 20 percent of Brevard County’s adult population, the park stands as a lasting tribute to those who served while creating a new destination for the entire community. The park’s main entrance is at 555 Fortenberry Road on Merritt Island.

Business trip turns historic — retired Air Force captain caught in 9/11 chaos

BY ERNIE DORLING On the clear, blue morning of Sept. 11, 2001, retired Air Force Capt. John Gowing, along with his business colleagues, left Washington, D.C. and gazed out the window of his Delta Shuttle bound for New York.

As the flight descended toward LaGuardia Airport, he again looked out the window and saw the shimmer of early sunlight. Off in the distance, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stood tall against the sky.

“There was nothing unusual,” Gowing recalled. “It was just another beautiful September morning. The passengers were mostly businessmen and women, who drank a lot of coffee while they were glued to the screens on their laptop computers.”

he had just landed. When he arrived at the Northrop Grumman facility, he noticed a thick plume of dark smoke rising from the direction of Manhattan. At first, he assumed it was an industrial fire or a warehouse accident.

“You don’t immediately think (of a) terrorist attack,” Gowing said.

“Not on a day that looked so normal.”

Upon arriving at Northrop Grumman, Gowing encountered heightened security.

“Guards were restricting entry, checking identification carefully and directing employees toward television monitors,” Gowing said.

Inside, confusion and disbelief filled the air. It was there, standing among engineers and defense analysts, that Gowing first saw live coverage showing a second aircraft strike in the South Tower.

“The smoke and destruction were not unlike the devastation I witnessed during my time in Vietnam,” Gowing said.

In that instant, the scope of the crisis became unmistakable. Phones jammed. Cellular networks failed under the surge of calls. Like millions of Americans, Gowing struggled to reach his family in

Washington, D.C. “You couldn’t get through,” he said. “All you could do was hope they knew you were safe.”

With the nation’s airspace shut down by the Federal Aviation Administration, flights were grounded indefinitely. Gowing’s return ticket was useless.

“We were temporarily stranded, not sure how we were going to get home,” Gowing said. “We were lucky to find a room for the night.

And the next day, we decided to drive back to D.C. in the car we had rented for the day. The highways were crowded with other travelers doing the same, seeking any route home possible,” he added.

The events of that morning remain etched in his memory — the quiet view of the skyline, the sudden column of smoke and the stunned faces in that secure facility. For Gowing, the realization that he had flown past the towers just one minute before history changed forever is something he will never forget.

“I still have my boarding pass from my flight to La Guardia from that day,” Gowing said. “It will serve as a reminder for the rest of my life of what happened that day.” SL Comprehensive Range of Treatments

Advocates bring together Vietnam veterans for observance, camaraderie

National Vietnam War Veterans Day marks the day in 1973 when the Military Assistance Command was disbanded, and the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam.

For some, the observance of that day on March 29 is the welcome home the veterans of the Vietnam War never received when they came home.

The camaraderie, the brotherhood and the care for each other was palpable at the National Vietnam War Veterans Day event held March 26 at Captains House in Palm Bay. More than 150 veterans and family members filled the house to capacity.

As one of the event’s speakers, Bobbie Keith said, “This event was

orchestrated by veterans for veterans.

It is about our connection to each other.”

It was orchestrated by veterans’ advocates. Vietnam veterans Ben Bydalek and Manuel Alexander organized the event after an organization began planning it, but had to cancel. That’s when Bydalek

and Alexander quickly rallied support, among them the Vietnam Veterans of Brevard, and brought the veterans, men and women together.

The event even included a free dinner for all attendees.

It was billed as the first. By the comments heard at the event, this will not be the last of the commemoration of National Vietnam War Veterans Day in Brevard County.

Both Bydalek and Alexander are strong advocates for Vietnam veterans who already put a lot of effort in supporting and promoting veterans and veterans’ issues.

Bydalek operates the Vietnam War Exhibit & Education Center

in Melbourne, a museum of war memorabilia and artifacts.

Alexander is the president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1096 based in Palm Bay. The event brought together people who had not seen each other for long periods and others who met for the first time, including some who served in the same unit at different times during the war. Others made connections with representatives of veterans’ organizations that can be of assistance to them.

It is always refreshing to see how advocates and organizations work to help fellow veterans connect and help each other. SL

Top Gun to fishing guide, Marine reflects on career of service, leadership

BY ERNIE DORLING From the bayous of South Louisiana to the cockpit of a Marine fighter jet and the waters of the Caribbean, Mike Gautreaux has built a life defined by service, leadership and adventure.

Growing up in South Louisiana, Gautreaux joined the Marine Corps in 1969 during his sophomore year of college at Louisiana State University.

He answered the call to serve at a time when the Vietnam War was reshaping a generation.

In 1971, the band Faces, featuring Rod Stewart, released the hit song “Had Me a Real Good Time.”

That same year, Gautreaux was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

After completing The Basic School in 1972, Gautreaux reported for flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, the cradle of Naval Aviation. There, he began the demanding process of earning his wings. In December 1973, he was designated a Naval Aviator, launching a career that would eventually take him to the pinnacle of Marine Corps aviation.

In the fall of 1979, Gautreaux attended the elite United States Navy Fighter Weapons School — better

The experience further cemented his reputation as a disciplined and highly capable fighter pilot.

During the next decade, he rose through the ranks, culminating in command of a Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter squadron from March 1991 to March 1993. Leading Marines during a period marked by rapid change in military operations, Gautreaux emphasized precision, accountability and teamwork. He ultimately retired from the Marine Corps in 1996 as a colonel.

Mike Gautreaux served in the Marine Corps as an F/A-18 pilot, attended the Navy Fighter Weapons School, Top Gun, and later became commander of an F/A-18 fighter squadron. did not mean slowing down. In July 1996, he accepted an unusual assignment — island manager of Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean.

At the time, the remote atoll was under Navy control before being transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Gautreaux oversaw the island’s infrastructure and managed its turf operations, ensuring the isolated outpost remained functional. He remained there until the summer of 2000.

Eventually settling in Cocoa Beach, Gautreaux combined his leadership skills with a lifelong love of fishing. He became director and co-host of “Big Game Fishing the World,” an ESPN program that aired on weekend mornings. The show took him across the Caribbean to cover competitive big-game fishing tournaments, introducing viewers to exotic waters and seasoned anglers.

He later operated a fishing charter business out of Port Canaveral before retiring for good in 2016. Today, Gautreaux resides at the Indian River Colony Club.

Now, he enjoys tarpon and freshwater fishing whenever time allows. Married to his wife Phyllis for 37 years, Gautreaux is also the

proud father of four children and a grandfather to seven — roles he considers among his most rewarding missions.

When he isn’t fishing, Gautreaux continues to volunteer with various organizations, including MOAACC, where he is the vice president of the Good Deeds Foundation, aiding active-duty, veterans and ROTC organizations.

It’s clear that, as the band Faces said, Gautreaux has had himself “A Real Good Time.” SL

Military mass enlistment — 250 young adults take oath to serve

BY ERNIE DORLING In a stirring display of patriotism and promise, approximately 250 young men and women from across Brevard County raised their right hands at Viera High School and took the oath to serve in the United States military.

The swearing-in ceremony April 17 was attended by local dignitaries, including U.S Rep. Mike Herradopolis, Florida Sen. Deborah Mayfield, Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Dr. Mark Rendell, the superintendent of Brevard Public Schools, along with family members and community supporters. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for enlistees bound for every branch of the Armed Forces.

Many of the recruits are expected to depart for boot camp within the next three to 30 days.

For many of those sworn in, the ceremony represented more than a career choice — it was the realization of a deeply personal calling.

Among them was Xavier Hill, a 2024 graduate of Satellite Beach High School, who was set to leave on April 21, for Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina.

Since graduation, Hill has served as a volunteer firefighter and worked as a cook in local restaurants.

“I’m searching for a sense of brotherhood, discipline and belonging,” Hill said. Following boot camp, Hill is scheduled to continue training as a military policeman.

Dylan S. Sudbrink, a Melbournearea graduate, will depart July 14 for Navy basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes.

“I wanted to see and travel the world,” Sudbrink said. “Plus, the Navy is going to train me in computers after which, I’ll be assigned to the submarine service.”

Dylan Hopper will begin Army basic training on May 4 at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina.

After graduating from high school in 2018 and later earning a degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design, he worked as a logistics contractor with Northrop Grumman before being laid off. The setback led him to pursue military service, where he plans to enter the Signal Corps after boot camp.

Also among the future service members was Rihanna Taylor Philistine, a senior at Melbourne High School, who is expected to depart for Air Force basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland later this summer.

“I was uncertain about my life plans after graduation,” Philistine said, who now sees military service as both a way to serve her country and prepare for college afterward.

“I’m looking forward to the new experiences,” she said. “I’m also nervous about what to expect. But my family has been fully supportive.”

Addressing the enlistees, Rendell,

praised the enlistees for their courage and commitment.

“You represent the very best of Brevard County,” Rendell said.

“As you stand on the threshold of your military journey, know that your commitment does not go unnoticed. Your courage, discipline and willingness to put service before self are qualities that inspire all of us. We are proud of you, we believe in you, and we will stand behind you today, tomorrow and always.”

This is the second year in a row that the mass swearing-in of enlistees has taken place. The event is part of the Brevard Public Schools Partnership with Education and Citizenship Armed Forces Coalition of the Space Coast

(ECAC). Collaborating with veteran organizations such as the Military Officers Association of America, Cape Canaveral (MOAACC), and ECAC aims to enrich students’ experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

“Over 250 young Americans are committed to serving their country today,” said Donn Weaver of MOAACC. “Their commitment serves as a lesson for all Americans.”

One generation to the next — All Veterans Reunion set for Wickham Park

BY DEBRA BRYANT For generations, military customs, tributes and traditions have been a mainstay of American life. This would not be possible without a smooth transition between generations that assures all veterans are not forgotten.

This year’s All Veterans Reunion is celebrating its 38th year as the nation’s largest and longest running veteran’s reunion from May 7 to 10 at Wickham Park.

Highlights include live music, food trucks, a beverage tent, a vendor marketplace, job fair and the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall and The Some Gave All — The Moving Tribute.

Last year was a transitional year for the Reunion. Seasoned veterans felt it was time to transition the coordination of the Reunion to the younger generation.

“Doc” Russo, an eight-year U.S. Navy Veteran, served as a hospital medic in the Panama, Lebanon and Grenada invasions. He was the reunion’s event coordinator and chief of operations for 15 years.

Haywood appreciates Russo’s knowledge and experience, which continues to help him have the confidence to keep serving veterans.

“I learned from last year’s event to ask for more support, donations and sponsorships, which has made a big difference this year,” he said. “We are expecting 500 daily visitors, and this year’s event will be a laid-back, casual environment with better-thanever live bands and dedicated golf cart shuttles to and from parking.”

Everyone is invited to come out for a day of remembrance and fun for the whole family. Festivities begin Sunday, May 3 and end Sunday, May 10 with free admission.

“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said.

Memorial Day — a tradition that began in 1866, expanded after World War I and declared a national holiday in 1971 — remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

‘Silly Love Songs’ — Paul McCartney and Wings

One of Paul McCartney’s biggest post-Beatles hits was a retort to an uncalled for and caustic insult that undoubtedly pained the ex-Fab Four bassist.

John Lennon, the Beatles’ founder and one-time writing partner of McCartney, had made the snarky statement that, during their partnership, McCartney had merely dashed off sentimental slush that was no better or more important than socalled elevator music.

Really, Lennon? Let’s take a look.

McCartney’s early romantic contributions had actually contributed mightily to the Beatles’ oeuvre. After all, he was responsible for such classics as “And I Love Her,” “Here, There and Everywhere,” and “All My Loving,” the last mentioned a tune that Lennon once proclaimed “a fine piece of work.”

Lennon had obviously envied McCartney during their years together — 1957 to 1969. McCartney was the most popular Beatle, the best looking, the hardest working, the most knowledgeable about 20th century music and, arguably, the most talented.

shouldn’t have surprised anyone.

McCartney had no problem standing up for himself, though. “I’m a fan of old-fashioned writing,” he admitted. “I hate silly rhymes but, when they work, they’re the greatest little things in songwriting.” he stated.

Powered by a strong bass line, a pronounced disco thump and a cornucopia of disparate instruments, “Silly Love Songs” was a commercial masterpiece. Music critic John Bergstrom called it “an exemplary piece of mid-70s pop production and a pure pleasure.”

McCartney said, “Over the years, people have said, ‘Aw, he sings love songs, he writes love songs, he’s so soppy at times.’ I have thought, ‘Well, I know what they mean, but people have been doing love songs forever. I like ’em. Other people like ’em.’ ”

Folks have apparently been liking ’em for millenia. In fact, love lyrics have been around for at least 4,000 years, with the oldest known examples having been discovered in Sumeria — modern-day Iraq — and preserved on clay tablets.

“The fact is, deep down, people are very sentimental,” McCartney continued. “If they watch a sentimental movie at home, they cry. But in public, they won’t. We don’t like to show our emotions. We tend to sneer at that. And, in the same way, people may not admit to liking love songs, but that’s what they seem to

crave.

“The nice payoff now is that a lot of the people I meet who are at the age where they’ve got a couple of kids and have grown up a bit, settling down, they’ll say to me, ‘I thought you were really soppy for years, but I get it now! I see what you were doing!’ ” SL

A wonderful life — bond still strong after 75 years of marriage

BY LILLIAN NGUYEN Evelyn and Darwyn Compton recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. What’s the 93- and 94-year-old couple’s big secret to a successful marriage of seven and a half decades?

“Don’t assume you know what the other one’s thinking,” Evelyn Compton said. “You talk it over.”

The two of them still share a kiss in the morning and at night. Her husband added a slightly different perspective — “We’re a great pair,” he said. “She can’t hear and I can’t see!”

The Comptons celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on April 14.

Evelyn and Darwyn Compton’s story starts in a Maryland neighborhood, on a suburban street corner. A 17-year-old Evelyn was waiting for the school bus when she was approached by a stranger.

“This young man came along and said, ‘Hi, come on, I’ll give you a ride to school,’ ” she recalled. “And I said, ‘No, thank you.’ ” Evelyn met the stranger again when her mother urged her to meet with the nice young man that had

“He rang the phone and I quickly grabbed it because I didn’t want my dad to hear the phone,” Evelyn

Compton said. “I said, ‘Hello’, and he said, ‘You’ll never see me again’.

Click … and I thought to myself, ‘Who cares?’ ” Despite the rocky start, the two of them eloped at 18 and 19. Everyone who heard about it told them, “It’s not going to last five years.” The Comptons proved them wrong.

In his younger days, Darwyn worked as a heavy equipment operator and moonlighted as a bodybuilder.

Evelyn owned a flower shop in Baltimore. She continued her work as a florist when the couple moved to Florida.

Meanwhile, her husband found work with Sea Ray Boats on Merritt Island.

“I got a job as a guard, and within one year, I was running the company’s security,” he said. “They still call me every once in a while.”

Although he retired at the age of 84, he’s still known as Captain.

They raised three sons, Darwyn Jr., Allen and Steven.

“We’ve had a wonderful life.” The two of them agreed that it’s been hard at times, but they wouldn’t trade it for the world. SL

Second Harvest Food Bank’s new warehouse now distributes a third more food

BY LINDA JUMP Brevard County’s new Second Harvest Food Bank distribution center in Melbourne that opened a year ago is feeding Brevard’s needy with a third more food and four times as much fresh produce.

“We are distributing more than 8.2 million pounds of food per month,” said George Ortiz, the branch director.

For students and workers at Eastern Florida State College, partnering with Second Harvest in February 2025 has swelled its Titan2Titan program from about 10 per month to more than 500, said Emily Tonn, the associate dean of student success and support.

“It’s growing and growing and growing on each of our campuses.

Me and my team are collecting 1,800 pounds each week,” she said.

With the addition of refrigerators and freezers, now dairy, fruit and vegetables can also be available, she said.

Second Harvest of Central Florida is part of Feeding America, the largest U.S. charity for domestic hunger relief. It provides 330,000 meals each day to those in Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties.

In addition to providing food, the charity also provides a variety of other services, including job training and assistance with bills.

“As demand continues to grow, this (Brevard) facility allows us to respond faster and more efficiently to the needs of our neighbors,” said Derrick Chubbs, the president and chief executive director.

Ortiz said the distribution center provides food for 88 partner feeding agencies in the county.

“The need has increased because everything is so expensive now — the rent, the bills and so there’s not

enough money left for food,” he said.

Ortiz said four trucks leave the warehouse daily to pick up produce from 22 stores in Brevard County, including Sam’s Club, Walmart, Costco and others Monday through Friday.

At the warehouse, the goods are sorted by category and stored in assigned areas for meat, fish, poultry, dairy, canned goods and fresh produce. Most sorting is done by volunteers. Then, Ortiz said, agencies shop through the sorted foods for their pantries and distribution to the needy. Nonprofits such as Providence Connects, local churches and community groups help provide the food to children, seniors, veterans and low-income families in Brevard.

Last year, more than 2,260 volunteers donated nearly 6,000 hours in the fight against hunger.

The Galmont Ballet has announced its Spring Gala 2026: “Defile Classique: An Evening of Artistic Excellence and Celebration.”

Student dancers will take the stage May 22 and 23.

The ballet offers pre-professional training for aspiring dancers ages 5 and older, and is well known for its annual holiday productions of “The Nutcracker.” Founders and artistic directors Frank Galvez and Lucia Montero have worked tirelessly with their students to create a performance that is a representation of the young dancers’ growth and development.

The Erna Nixon Park and Nature Center will host four themed weeks of programs in July and August to celebrate the park’s 50th anniversary.

“It opened as a county park in 1976,” said Susan Skinner, the environmental program supervisor at Erna Nixon.

In February, a moonlight stroll with music and vendors drew nearly 1,000 visitors for stargazing, listening to folk music and participating in a drum circle.

Child to adulthood — asthma can be triggered at any time

BY EMILY WARNER Did you know 20 to 25 million Americans are affected by asthma and that it can develop at any age?

With May being Asthma Awareness Month, there’s no better time to learn more about this condition, its causes and treatment options.

Asthma is a condition that causes a person’s airways to become inflamed and filled with mucus, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness or difficulties breathing. It can present itself in mild, moderate or severe cases.

Known as an asthma attack, when symptoms flare up more unexpectedly or severely, without proper or timely treatment, these attacks can be fatal.

Brevard resident Misti Blu Day has had asthma since she was a child.

She recently recovered from an exacerbation (a sudden worsening of asthma symptoms) last month. “(Asthma) can be really scary, because your airway is a top priority.

Although there are many different triggers for asthma, symptoms and attacks often present themselves similarly. and know your triggers,” Day said.

“Having a pulse oximeter at home can be helpful to make sure you are getting enough oxygen. I have inhalers, medication and a nebulizer when an exacerbation occurs.

For anyone who wants to better understand asthma, grab a straw and only breathe through it.”

Triggers — the things that set off asthma and a possible asthma attack — can vary based on a person’s diagnosed type of asthma.

It is always possible that someone can be born with asthma, while others will be diagnosed later in life.

This condition can stem from allergies, exercise, stress, weather,

a cold virus and breathing in substances that trigger asthma such as cigarette smoke or irritants found on job sites.

Some individuals can even experience a type of asthma that only has coughing as a symptom, while others could develop asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) simultaneously.

While there is no cure for asthma, it is a manageable condition with a variety of treatment options.

“Spring is in the air and for some, this poses challenges,” said Angelo Fodor, a pharmacist at Browning’s Pharmacy & Health Care. “Here are some points: • Identify and avoid asthma triggers • Use prescribed medications regularly • Monitor your symptoms and peak flow reading • Work with your doctor on an action plan • Stay active with regular exercise or in contact with your doctor Your doctor and pharmacist are here to help and support you.” SL

Cocoa loses its Queen: paddlewheel boat for sale

BY MIKE GAFFEY Cocoa’s riverfront likely will lose a unique landmark soon.

The Indian River Queen, a 100-foot-long paddlewheel boat that’s been taking passengers on leisurely river and lagoon cruises since 2004, is up for sale because its owner is retiring.

“Most likely it won’t remain in our community,” Penny Flaherty said.

“It’ll probably be sold to someone in another community.”

The riverboat has been in drydock locally since mid-January for extensive renovations. But because the vessel is on the market, “we are not planning to continue regular service when it returns to Cocoa,” Flaherty said.

At the Indian River Queen website, the boat tour agency announced that the riverboat “is temporarily not accepting reservations while we complete our scheduled bi-annual drydock and operational maintenance.”

Sporting a distinctive red paddlewheel, the Indian River Queen sailed from Cocoa Village Marina at 90 Delannoy Ave. With room for 234 passengers, the triple-deck boat specialized in private charters such as weddings, corporate events and reunions, but also offered excursions for the public including brunch and dinner cruises.

“People have come from all over the world to host special events on the Queen,” said Flaherty, who is the agency’s owner/founder and event planner. “Movie stars, rock stars and astronauts have also enjoyed private events onboard.”

The Indian River Queen has been a fixture at the Cocoa Village Marina since 2004. It took passengers on leisurely cruises on the Indian River Lagoon. in Wisconsin, Flaherty said. It was moved to Michigan and then to Charleston, South Carolina, where it was renamed the Charleston Harbor Queen.

After the riverboat operated for several years in Boynton Beach under the name Rambling Rose, Flaherty bought the vessel at auction in 2002 after it was used during production of the 2003 Denzel Washington film “Out of Time.”

Flaherty and her crew brought the riverboat to Brevard County, spent two years renovating it and gave the vessel its current name.

The Indian River Queen sailed for the first time from Cocoa on Thanksgiving weekend 2004 for a wedding, she said.

heard from several potential buyers in South Florida, Sarasota and North Florida, according to Flaherty. The Queen nearly wound up in Oregon but a deal fell through, she said.

Once the Coast Guard-certified riverboat returns from drydock, Flaherty said efforts to sell will accelerate.

“At drydock, we do projects most people wouldn’t expect,” Flaherty said. “For example, we are painting the bottom, which we always do. We also cleaned and painted the fuel tank.

We even removed the paddlewheel so we could rebuild the aft platform.

We also repaired any other issues to ensure it’s in great shape when we return to Cocoa.”

After more than 20 years of cruises, Flaherty felt it was time to sell.

“My husband retired two years ago, and we are looking forward to traveling and spending more time with our friends and family,” she said.

“Cocoa doesn’t look the same when you go over the (Hubert H. Humphrey) Bridge,” she said. “It will be missed. The Queen has maintained a successful reputation for over 22 years. So I’m pretty proud of what we’ve done over the years.”

Seward Johnson’s live-size sculptures captivate visitors at Ormond Beach

Cristina Cottom and her children reside in Ormond Beach and often pass by the many bronze sculptures located along Granada Boulevard.

“We missed them last year when they were here, so today my children and I decided to explore the boulevard, take the dog for a walk and find all the sculptures. We’re trying to get photos of us with all the sculptures.”

Cottom and many others have been enjoying Seward Johnson’s Art Imitates Life II: Beyond the Bronze sculpture tour in Ormond Beach, which will run until June 19.

Johnson (1930-2020) was born in New Jersey and after taking a beginner’s sculpture class, he began creating figurative sculptures spurred to strengthen communities through everyday life, incorporating music, dance, poetry and food. These sculptures appear so life-like and realistic that they are often mistaken for real people.

by Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens. There are 12 sculptures located along the Granada Boulevard corridor on both public and private property. Two very exciting areas to explore include Fortunato Park and

Lauren McCloud of Rockledge brought her mother Karen Reprogle, who was visiting from Indiana, to explore the sculptures for the first time.

“What a great reason to explore Ormond Beach’s charming downtown area.

The statues were so lifelike!

You couldn’t help but want to talk to, reach out or snap a photo with them. We met a lot of friendly locals who were buzzing about this attraction. My favorite was the Mona Lisa,” McCloud said.

Ormond Beach is easily accessible from Brevard County via Interstate 95 North. Take exit 268, turn SENIOR LIFE Pam Williams right and follow straight into Cristina Cottom and her children pose with one Ormond Beach. It’s about 75 miles from Rockledge of the life-size statues. and should take about 75 Rockefeller Gardens, both of which minutes. Ormond Beach has wrap around under the bridge on several free public parking areas, Granada Boulevard into a wonderful offering one the opportunity to park family-friendly park with picnic and walk the village searching for the tables, exercise equipment, swings sculptures.

Walking the Granada bridge is likely to provide a good workout.

A good visit plan would be to park on West Granada, find some of the sculptures, break for lunch, then drive over the bridge and park in a public lot near The Casements, John D. Rockefeller’s winter home.

Melbourne’s first church now a museum highlighting its founders

BY LINDA JUMP Melbourne’s earliest church now shares the memories of life 141 years ago along Crane Creek.

Located across the street from the Greater Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the small cypress building was originally the home of Wright and Mary Brothers.

Wright Brothers was one of three black freedmen who founded the city along Crane Creek with Peter Wright and Balaam Allen.

Last year, the nonprofit Greater Allen Development Corporation (GADC) in collaboration with Northrop Grumman Corporation opened the refurbished and relocated home at 1001 Brothers Ave. at a cost nearing $200,000.

The house, which served as the first church, is now the Melbourne Founders Museum.

“It’s part of our history. The building was forgotten and nearly torn down for development, but we restored it,” said James Shackelford, the president of the corporation. “The house was built in three parts as the owners had the funds to add to it.”

The museum, open each second Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment, includes a reception area, dining room, bedrooms and kitchen.

In 1884, three black couples — the Brothers, Balaam and Selina Allen and Robert and Carrie Lipscomb — organized what is now the Greater Allen Chapel AME Church, with worship in

What is now the Greater Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church started in the home of Wright and Mary Brothers which served as the first church in Melbourne from about 1884 until 1885. The home now houses the Melbourne Founders Museum at Crane Creek at 1001 Brothers Ave. in Melbourne. the Brothers’ home.

The church was reportedly named after Bishop Richard Allen, the first consecrated bishop of the AME Church.

In 1885, the original church was built and lasted until it was replaced in 1964 at 2416 Lipscomb St. The home changed hands many times and in 2019, St. Stephens Way gave it to the GADC. Pastor Rev. Cheryl Wilcox said the 300-member church is critically important within the community.

“In all of Melbourne, our section is one of the most disadvantaged. We’re

called as Christians to be a community partner and a beacon of light to share Jesus,” she said.

Average weekly attendance is about 80 parishioners.

She said enhancements are planned both short and long-term to remodel the overcrowded pulpit area, bathrooms and kitchen and to restore pews and replace carpeting in the

sanctuary. She hopes to make the church building more accessible.

“We’re starting with bids from contractors and then will prioritize and start a campaign,” she said.

Mary Johnson, the head trustee pro tem and pantry administrator, said a building beside the church serves as a site for the distribution of food and services.

“One of our Sunday School teachers noted a lot of neighborhood kids didn’t have food to eat, so he created a pantry, and church members keep the shelves stocked,” Johnson said.

By partnering with agencies such as Second Harvest and Providence Connects, residents can get bagged groceries, mobile showers, mobile meals and case management.

Needs survey essential for planning for senior support services The 2026 Senior Needs Survey is here, and the Brevard Commission on Aging would like to hear from you.

Our organization is actively planning for the future of Brevard County’s growing senior population.

We are focused on advocacy, support services and strengthening the value of our aging community.

Using feedback from this survey, we are developing recommendations for a countywide Aging Plan that will be submitted to the Brevard County Board of Commissioners.

This plan will help address the needs of residents age 50 and older, with particular attention to those 65 and above.

What prompts people to be kind?

Childhood coaching and guidance by parents and teachers. What we’ve learned most as a child about helping others and caring for them is a big part of future conduct. When I was five years old and threw a shovel of sand at a little girl in the neighborhood sandbox, my mother made me apologize and explained “that was not kind.”

When my father gave me a Boy Scouts Handbook in 1946, I noticed Scouts Law No. 6 — A Scout is Kind.

“He is a friend to animals. He will not kill nor hurt any living creature needlessly, but will strive to save and protect all harmless life.” Today, it means being considerate, mild, gentle, benevolent, caring, helpful and humane. Whatever generation, we strive to do good.

Since I wrote the last column about being handicapped/disabled, I have been the recipient of many acts of kindness. People — young and old — open doors, help me with my walker, carry packages. It happens everywhere. While shopping, at the doctor, at church or out dining. People are kind and helpful. Smile! Express your thanks.

We have learned that being kind results in receiving kindness. As we age, we are blessed to have family, friends, caregivers, nurses, aids and helpers show their kindness. There is a term random acts of kindness that we observe in our lives. It just happens — at accident scenes, in malls, residential areas, parks, campgrounds and while

We are all on this big “mud ball” (planet earth) together.

The Facebook group site “Grumpy Old Men” shows older men in a complaint-oriented, negative thinking and bad attitude world. In a recent newspaper cartoon “Pickles,” the senior couple joust lovingly. While driving, Earl referred to his wife Opal as the “Nagivator” rather than the ‘Navigator.’ Name calling is not kindness whether joking about a spouse or neighbor.

Many church groups, service clubs and fraternal organizations show acts of kindness by helping seniors who need home repairs. The program H.E.A.R.T. (Help the Elderly Arrange Repairs Today) has volunteers “fix it.”
