More than Meals on Wheels that serve group meals with food prepared by Kammerdener’s staff.

Local child and adult day care centers also place orders for healthy, warm meals. In the summer, the kitchen makes lunches for the summer camps run by Brevard County Parks and Recreation.

The kitchen prepares meals via bulk cooking and assembly-line production.

“We would actually love to do even more,” Kammerdener said.

To help supplement the cost of programs like Meals on Wheels, Brevard Community Kitchen caters business meetings and lunches.

Kammerdener says the reasonably priced meals are professionally packaged and any profit goes right back into the other community programs offered at the kitchen.

Since making his career change, Kammerdener said his family has been incredibly supportive and that they are now advocates for what the kitchen represents.

“Like the other people who work here, this outreach really becomes a family affair,” he said. “My wife and sons appreciate what I do for a living and we have all become very invested as a family.”

For more than 18 years, Tom Kammerdener was an operations manager overseeing 5,500 daily meals at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

Since coming on board as the program director at the Brevard Community Kitchen one year ago, Kammerdener has found that overseeing the making of 2,000 meals each day is just a small part of his job.

“Most people have no idea what we really do here,” Kammerdener said. “We do not serve food at our building. We make meals that go out into the community, and we even do some catering.”

One of the largest meal-making programs that is organized at the community kitchen is Brevard County’s Meals on Wheels initiative for senior citizens and others who are unable to make their own food at home. A registered dietician creates a four-week menu for the program that ensures seniors receive a healthy, balanced meal.

“We try our best to allow seniors to stay living in their homes,” Kammerdener said. “We provide one meal per day, but our volunteers are also trained in safety checks to make sure the people receiving our meals are well and safe.”

In keeping with its wildly popular destination location and theme, this year’s Boomer Guide release expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 offers a unique experience at the Brevard Zoo. Boomer’s bucket list is one short

Come Feb.1 the poodle skirt, a symbol of the 1950s Americana style and flare, will hit the Space Coast as the annual Boomer Senior Expo kicks off.

Guests, stepping into The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville will feel as if they’ve traveled back to the days of “Grease,” “Happy Days” or simply their teenage years. The museum will transform into a 1950s bash where poodle skits will be as abundant as they were in the days when they first adorned the waists of school girls.

To fully understand what was considered one of the most iconic fashion pieces of the decade is to first understand its history.

The skirt was introduced in 1947 after Juli Lynne Charlot, a young actress and designer, created the stylish bottom at home. She cut a hole in the middle of a large circle of of felt — an excess of fabric that was not popular during World War II or the Great Depression — large enough for her waist, the skirt reaching just below the knee. She wore it to a holiday party in Los Angeles.

As time moved forward, so did the skirt. It was first made in bright girly colors, like pink with crinoline, a stiff fabric underneath to support and shape the piece.

By Linda Wiggins It was with great precision that Frank and Eleanor Turner lived their lives.

While working for the Associated Press at “the Cape,” later named Kennedy Space Center, Frank Turner toiled on missions pre-dating the Apollo program that would culminate in man’s landing on the moon and safe return to Earth. His proudest moment, after installing NASA’s teletype machines, was to type and send the copy of John Glenn’s space shot as the first American to orbit the earth.

As per the times, Eleanor took charge of the home and primary care of their two children, tasks equal to the great service provided by their husbands in the frenetic Space Race to the moon.

In a Charlotte Observer story that has gone viral on websites and social media, the couple’s daughter Linda Purser explained how that precision would continue through her parents’ last chapter in “their love story … one for the ages.”

The pair died within hours of

each other on Nov. 29, unbeknownst to the other. While the two lived together in a nursing home, Eleanor was moved to hospice were she perished, while Frank remained behind and died of respiratory failure.

Just as they lived, the two had their visitation, funerals and burial together at the same time and place.

Their Dec. 1 obituaries ran side by side with the same photo for each, creating the Internet sensation.

“He did for her anything she wanted because he just adored her so much,” Purser said of her parents’ 60 years-plus marriage, which she said was strong to the end.

“And she sure loved him, too.”

Looking for inspiration to jump start the new year?

By Linda Wiggins Many people commit to working on their best self in the New Year.

Mike Gisondi of Merritt Island believes that no time is the wrong time to make that resolution, sometimes daily — or moment to moment — after we realize that fear or any other obstacle is holding us back.

“Just as athletes learn how to win, each of us can learn the skills to assure our success in life,” Gisondi said. He has a passion to speak to and inspire three groups in this order: young people growing up in challenging situations, young people of any background, and people of any age. He has spoken to youngsters in the most challenged area of Brevard, the Powell Subdivision of south Melbourne.

“I don’t think I’m any different than anyone else. I think it’s a natural human state to share things and ideas that have made life better personally. I’ve had a lot of people share good things with me and I want to pass that on,” he said.

“We’re all traveling together.”

Gisondi is a frequent speaker to groups in person and via radio programs heard locally that have been broadcast all over the world. He will share his ideas and experiences at a talk called “Winning” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Suntree/Viera Library.

life, I don’t feel great, and that is a reminder that motivates me to feel better by being true to myself and my passions. Being authentic means being who I claim to be and not letting fear or anything else prevent me from living my life like it’s the only one I’m going to get on this Earth.”

Speaking of Earth, one of his passions is not only being down to earth, but helping others come down to Earth, literally. In the past 32 years, he has worked on experiments on Spacelab modules, the Space Shuttle integration of payloads and the planning and development of the International Space Station.

Before the Shuttle program came to a close, he secured a position with another Kennedy Space Center contractor to develop the next generation of spacecraft. While others work on a new propulsion system, his team is working on the other end, developing a way to safely retrieve the crew module that will splash down in the ocean, as in the Apollo era, and bring astronauts safely back to Earth.

“What Mike had to say was relevant, engaging, held the interest of everyone,” said Ellena Little, Club Esteem executive director.

“He will not disappoint.”

In terms of youth of any background, Terri Friedlander of Future Business Leaders of Brevard County said his talk inspired teamwork among the teens and created a connection that helped them relate.

“His great stories, from presidential speeches to Lady Gaga, were a hit,” Friedlander said.

As for people of any age, Gisondi said there has never been a better time to be exactly who we are called to be.

“A lot of people are finding that because it is hard to find a job, they have nothing to lose in starting their own venture to try to make money. I have seen a number of colleagues do just that when the Shuttle program ended and there was no space program to transition to as in the past,” Gisondi said.

“They realized that this was finally the time they could find out what their passion is and to give that to the world. This life we are given passes in an instant, so there really is no time like this time, right this minute.”

Couples can say “I Do, Again” at Senior Safari zoo expo

By Linda Wiggins When Connie and Jim Fears renewed vows for their 50th anniversary this past Valentine’s Day, they were saying to themselves, each other and God that if they could choose now, they’d say “I Do” all over again.

The first-ever non-zoo event to take over the entire Brevard Zoo grounds, the Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout sponsored by Senior Life will give couples a chance to say “I Do, Again,” in front of a beloved animal attraction at the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. senior expo Friday, Feb. 7.

Couples can give each other a Valentine’s Day to remember with a champagne toast, wedding cake and a professional portrait for $75 a couple at either 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. that day.

For the Fears, their early years as a military family with young children entailed frequent moves, unforeseen challenges and limited finances.

Then, their vows meant, “I love you because.” Now, vows mean “I love you despite,” a decision that is much stronger and more mature, according to a neighbor and marriage counselor serving Suntree to Barefoot Bay who attended the ceremony.

“As they reflected on their shared joys and sorrows, like

the loss of a son who served in the military, it evoked the true meaning of the reading from Corinthians that followed,” Stephanie Byrd said. The therapist is certified in Prepare/ Enrich, the No. 1 approach used by relationship experts to prepare couples for marriage or enrich their existing union.

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. In their words and posture was a message relayed: we did it and would do it all over again.”

When couples choose to renew their vows, they are engaging in rituals that can have deep and profoundly positive effects on their marriage, Byrd said.

“Unlike the initial wedding ceremony, the couples have a clearer, more realistic perspective of their own and their partner’s strengths and limitations.”

Many boomers turning seniors married in a time when traditional rituals seemed passé, some opting for civil procedure over church ceremony. According to Chaplain Tom Unrath, pastor of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cocoa that serves Central to North Brevard, this can also be a good reason for renewal.

Married for 14 years, she also takes care of young children as well as aging parents while running a thriving practice.

“It is only now that I am beginning to understand the true meaning of the vows my husband and I exchanged

on our wedding day. Our love has never been deeper having been transformed by this journey,” she said.

“Life can be stressful at times, but through each challenging life experience, we made the choice to turn toward each other for strength and comfort, deepening our commitment and connection.”

Pausing to reflect on those years, a broad smile lit up her eyes.

“I look forward to the stories we will share on our 50th anniversary.”

Quilters cruise the seas

By MARY BROTHERTON Anita Kelly was 7 when she first started sewing in her native Denmark. “I’ve always loved colorful fabric,� she said.

The chemical engineer came to Florida in 2000, when her husband transferred to Patrick Air Force Base.

She later learned about quilting and fell in love with the American tradition. “As an engineer, I love the numbers behind quilting.�

Kelly enjoyed the craft and artistry so much, she opened Boutique 4 Quilters in West Melbourne. Friday morning sewing socials expanded into a Girls Night for quilters. “But the most exciting thing,�

Kelly said, “is our upcoming cruise.

It’s a first for us. Quilters can come alone. We have other singles they can share a cabin with, or they can come with friends or their spouses. No one will be left out.�

According to Kelly, the cruise will depart Port Canaveral March 23, returning March 30 on Royal

Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. “We will have four projects for our quilters. They can choose two, and we provide all the materials. All they need to do is pack a bag for the cruise.�

Kelly and other qualified instructors will teach participants the projects, which range in skill level from beginner to advanced. “Our kits have all you need. We will provide scissors, fabric, thread, even Pfaff sewing machines. There will be one for each quilter.�

The cruise offers the usual excitement of a seven-day cruise to the Bahamas, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. This special quilting cruise will offer a pre-cruise quilting party, onboard parties for the group, a unique, embroidered quilt label and goody bags from sponsors.

‘Then and Now’ watercolor paintings on exhibit at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Special to Senior Life “Then and Now” is an exhibit of watercolor paintings inspired by photos of activities on the land before it was the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR). It is giving refuge visitors a look back in time as well as current day.

This 11th annual exhibit by the Brevard Watercolor Society (BWS) features 40 paintings on exhibit in the Visitor Center auditorium through the end of January.

The “Then” aspect of the show was a collaboration with the refuge staff and the BWS members to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the refuge, which is being celebrated in a number of ways during the next few months.

An opening reception for the artists was sponsored by MINWR Dec. 7.

Attendees were greeted and served

by MINWR staff and volunteers Connie Cranston, Sandee Larsen, Jenny Golcher, Mattie Chamberlin, Betty Salter and Joanne Heenan.

Approximately 50 people attended the event open to all MINWR members.

Scott Cockerham and his Blue Grass Band entertained guests in front of the Visitor Center while everyone was delighted with the toe tapping music.

Supervisor ranger Nancy Corona presented the Refuge Awards to Pat Mears for her historical painting of “Allenhurst Fish Camp, There’s A Catch” and Cindy McKee for “On the Prowl.”

OUR columnists Fort Clinch Florida State Park

My travels have recently taken me to the northeastern most area of Florida exploring the many interesting and diverse sights on Amelia Island east of Jacksonville.

One of many areas I visited on the island was historic Fort Clinch, northeast of Fernandina Beach at Cumberland Sound. It’s an ideal destination for your entire family.

Fort Clinch is a 19th century brick fortress built in 1847 after the end of the Second Seminole War. The only battle to occur at the fort was when Union troops during the Civil war recaptured the fort in 1862 after Confederate forces seized control the previous year. Fort Clinch served as the base of Union operations in the area throughout the Civil War. Today, the fort is in excellent condition and is one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the United States.

You can start your visit of Fort Clinch by exploring the Visitor Information Center.

Daily tours with period re-enactors depicting garrison life bring the fort to life for your family. On the first weekend of each month, there are costumed interpreters performing living history re-enactments of a Civil War soldier’s life in 1864 at Fort Clinch. Demonstrations include military drills and working in the fort’s laundry, infirmary, kitchen barracks, quartermaster, sanitary commission and carpenter ship.

Fort Clinch State Park also offers a variety of nature and historic programs during the year. There is much to see and do at this outstanding state park, which includes excellent beaches, camping,

canoeing and kayaking, pier and surf fishing, hiking and self-guided nature trails and wildlife viewing. A full-facility campground and a youth camping area provide overnight accommodations. Just outside the park are many fine motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts and condos that are just footsteps from the beach.

Driving to Fort Clinch on Amelia Island from Brevard is a pleasant 3-plus hours.

Take I-95 North to Exit 337. This is I-295. Go east on I-295 to exit 42, Route 105.

Route 105 is a scenic road and you will pass the famous St. Mary’s Ferry, Big and Little Talbot Island State Parks, Amelia Island and many exclusive resorts.

Drive north on Route 105 to Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach.

Go left on Atlantic to the entrance of Fort Clinch State Park on your right.

Fort Clinch State Park is open year round from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vehicle entrance with up to 8 persons is $6.

The Fort Clinch historical area is an additional $2 per person.

Old Talk Do you talk about being old?

What is “old?” People who live a long life do not play the “I’m so old” theme. In the Bible (Isaiah 65:20-21) there is a passage: “… an old man who does not round out his full lifetime; He dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years, and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed. They shall live in the houses they build, and eat the fruit of the vineyards they plant.”

Connecting with family and friends is a valued experience at any age.

Conversations may be a challenge, but you have a long life of experience.

What do I say to the granddaughter with a pierced nose, lip and eyebrow?

How do I connect with the grandson who looks like a peacock? Greet these young adults with love, kindness, and energy. Focus on what they are doing at school, their special interests and outside activities. Show genuine interest. You can learn from their new music, iPhone connectivity and events. Share your excitement and you will be considered “cool.”

As you participate in discussions, avoid referring to yourself as “old.”

You become what you talk about.

Share your experiences about your youth and young adult years. Begin with “when I was your age….” and add a brief anecdote. Reliving those years adds to those “senior moments” in a whole new way.

When the younger children want you to play, you don’t have to get down on the floor.

Ask them to bring toys, games

Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski and other activities to a table where you can be involved. You are never too old to play. Teach them a card game. Have fun even if they say: “Grandma’s cheating again.”

Recently, Dr. Stanley Paris (age 76) left St. Augustine alone on his 63-foot sailboat to set an aroundthe-world record of less than 120 days. When other sailors said, “You are too old,” Dr. Paris smiled and left the dock. Check his daily progress at stanleyparis.com.

As you go forward, focus on your vigor, energy and the future. As you visit and meet with people in your age group, limit your discussions of ailments and doctor visits.

Switch gears and talk about new adventures. I asked a grayhaired lady at a Rockledge Baptist church luncheon “How old are you?” She responded: “I’m 90 years young. Funny thing is…

Just when I thought I had seen everything at Walmart, the following happened. I call this one, “When 60 or More Equals 20 or Less.”

I had run into the store to buy one gallon of milk.

ONE item. I got into the only 20 items or less checkout line open in the entire store.

There stood a gentleman in front of me with somewhere between 60 and 70 items, but don’t get ahead of me because despite the dopey look on his face and the earbuds in his ears, making him oblivious to the remarks of my fellow shoppers, he actually did something darkly brilliant.

This guy had the cashier count out 20 items, then paid her cash for them, then count 20 more, then paid for them, ditto then ditto again. I started getting upset but wait, it gets better.

He finally got to the last 10 items, two of which were opentop boxes. The cashier rang up the first eight items but when she got to the open-top boxes she began to take these little cans of cat food or something out one can at a time. She had to ring up each can separately until she finished the

I started to chuckle, but wait, there’s even more. She looked in the other box, looked at me and rolled her eyes and began to ring up another 30 cans.

I couldn’t contain myself.

I looked away and started one of those unstoppable laughs that no matter what anyone said or did I couldn’t stop.

The other 20 or so people in line didn’t think it was so funny, but this guy was killing me. While watching him happily stroll off, I wondered if he was incredibly stupid or brilliant. Maybe a little of both, but he sure taught me a lesson. I learned that 60 or more CAN equal 20 or less. SL

Melbourne Community Orchestra teams up for ‘Swinging with the Strings’

Melbourne Community Orchestra will join Swingtime for a concert called “Swinging with the Strings” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 7 and 8 at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 Hibiscus Blvd. in Melbourne.

By Linda Wiggins Tom Guinther’s 5-year-old grandtwins Lauren and Benjamin have yet to wrap their hands around an official golf club — yet. In preparation, Guinther cuts down toy plastic putters and adds a grip, even designing one for left-hand use. But as for elders Aaron, Joseph and Troy Guinther, the links are well underfoot.

Guinther is a regular at the Barefoot Bay Golf Course on which his home is located, so this means time spent with Grandpa is likely also time spent on the greens. It’s an activity he highly recommends grands do together to start a healthy New Year, encouraging youngsters to spend more time outside in the fresh air and less time inside staring down a video game.

“It starts with a golf cart. There isn’t a whole lot you can’t get kids to do if it entails getting there in a golf cart,” said Guinther, president of the Barefoot Bay Recreation District, which includes the public golf course.

The Guinthers love the great outdoors, but Diane Guinther’s favorite sport is garage saling, so intergenerational golfing is all about quality time with Grandpa.

“You get to be outside close to nature, with bald eagles soaring overhead and all other manner of wildlife all around you,” Guinther said. “If you play the whole course, that’s 3 to 4 hours of quality time.”

Guinther reaches beyond his own family to help other youngsters benefit from life lessons learned in golf. He and other residents volunteer to teach alongside Barefoot Bay’s PGA golf pro Jim Kormondy, who has held summer learning programs for youngsters for 26 years.

Speakers for the meetings cover areas of information to assist grandparents in their task of providing the best possible care for their grandchildren.

Local artist launches sculpting classes

Local artist Ed Chope will host sculpting and mold making classes that will take place at The Art Gallery of Viera beginning on Jan. 30.

Creative individuals will have the opportunity to learn sculpting from a master sculptor and mold maker.

Working in a 3D medium can be a challenge for students. Chope will teach the proper techniques to bring artwork to life. The course will consist of six two-hour classes and will focus on sculpting, creating a mold and producing a finished product.

“I’m confident that much of who he is comes from his grandfather,” Michael Grace said, “and I am absolutely sure his grandfather would have loved who River is. My dad was a very passionate person, much like River, taking whatever he did very seriously and embracing challenges with enthusiasm.”

National competitions aim to spur an interest among youth in science, technology, engineering and math — STEM — upon which contemporary economics bases the

country’s bright future.

River also earned the award based on STEM activities throughout the competition week.

This month, the “mathlete” will start post-holiday competitions in which he also excels.

“I like to think he gets that from his grandmother,” Grace said. “She was very intelligent and skipped a grade, and now she is a retired accountant.”

Structure and discipline to keep out distractions is important, said River’s mother, Tanya, but two other things count: good nutrition, and being a smart and nice person to begin with.

Turning the tables: when the middle becomes the slice oldest daughter, Gina Gabriel Kearney, married, but not yet with children of her own to tend.

How does it feel to have to ask for help, on top of the typical feeling that all you can do is still not enough?

“It’s kind of weird, because I guess I feel in general that if I don’t do it, it won’t get done. It’s a scary thing,” said Kim, once, in my estimation as a former expert in the field, one of the top five most powerful executives in the nonprofit community as head of Habitat for Humanity of Brevard.

Even then, she held the role as primary caregiver in the home. As her deteriorating heart health moved her to director of development, then volunteer, then well-wisher from the sidelines, she still organizes transportation for busy teens and packs lunch every day for her husband, Scott E. Gabriel,

Sandwich Generation members get their name because they are sandwiched between aging parents and young or adult children who require attention. It sometimes feels like we are drowning in the demands, weighted down further by the feeling we somehow are not doing all we can to meet the need.

Sometimes, as in Kim Gabriel’s case, the tables are turned and the upper or lower parts of the sandwich must provide the care.

Kim is entering such a time as she gets a Jan. 17 checkup that could mean: moving to the top of the transplant list, getting checked into the Mayo Clinic for the duration, and coming home with a new heart.

Yet amidst the health challenges that require she relinquish her role as sandwich middle, Kim has found blessings. Kindness of family and strangers that shines brighter than the darkness of those who have turned away. The inspiring gratitude of those who have turned the negative of a life lost too early into a life renewed by that heart.

“I have to leave it up to God that things will be taken care of according to His will and not my will,” Kim said, adding that, like her loved ones, something in herself has had to step up.

Massachusetts native Jacqueline A. “Jackie” Gulla has collected unique nutcrackers most of her adult life. Her collection includes Disney characters, a chimney sweep, rocking horses, the Three Wisemen, skier, doctor, hunter and various versions of Santa.

Most were made by the German Steinbach company and purchased from stores worldwide. However, the one nutcracker she cherishes most is the Molly Pitcher nutcracker.

Gulla met her husband, John, on a blind date more than 50 years ago. In 1962, they married and she embraced the life of an Army wife.

They settled in Brevard County after he retired from the military.

While her husband served in the United States, Europe and Vietnam, she served at home. When they were stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., she immersed herself in the Officers’ Wives Club, community services, Girl Scouts and their church.

There, in 1977, Commanding Gen. Charles “Chuck” Gordon presented Jackie Gulla with the Molly Pitcher award. This award is reserved to a limited number of military spouses who have met strict criteria emulating the actions of Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley, who

fought in the Battle of Monmouth during the Revolutionary War. More folklore than history, some historians suggest that Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of many women.

Today, many Army bases celebrate Molly Pitcher Day, annually.

On a trip, post-retirement, to Sedona, Ariz., the Gullas admired a Molly Pitcher nutcracker, but fearing the fragile object could be damaged on their trip, they decided they would not buy it.

However, without his wife’s knowledge, John Gulla purchased the nutcracker and had it shipped to their home as a surprise, his way to thank her for serving at home during his military career.

Healthy resolutions for 2014 Recommendations from a Pharmacist

Amy Tiemeier, Pharm.D., BCPS, associate professor of pharmacy practice at St. Louis College of Pharmacy suggests four easy resolutions for a healthier 2014.

Learn exactly what goes into your body “Start by writing down every prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, herbal supplement, vitamin, energy drink or enhanced water you have in a week,” Tiemeier said. “The length of the list may surprise you.

Talk to a pharmacist about your current health and goals for 2014 Take the list of medications and supplements you created to your pharmacist. “As medication experts, pharmacists are trained at spotting potential interactions that could be causing you problems,” Tiemeier said. “Your pharmacist may be able to work with your physician to reduce the number of medications you take.”

Clean out the bathroom medicine cabinet “It’s hot and humid in there, which can reduce the effectiveness of medications,” Tiemeier said. “A good rule of thumb to follow is that if you don’t remember the last time you used it, it’s probably time to have it replaced. Also, use this time to find another spot for pain relievers, antacids or any other “as needed” medications.

Do not flush the medication down the toilet or sink Dispose of it properly by looking for a medication disposal program in your city. More and more cities now have permanent drop-off sites located in police and sheriff’s department stations.

Get enough sleep “Insomnia is a common side effect of some medications, and it may be made even worse if you’re taking multiple prescriptions,” Tiemeier said. Even if you don’t have insomnia, getting enough sleep will provide you with more energy which helps you to remain active and make healthier decisions. SL.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) provides free, unbiased health insurance counseling and information to elders and their caregivers in person or over the telephone. Through a statewide network of trained SHINE counselors, individuals with Medicare-related questions and issues can receive personal and confidential assistance.

SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA), operated locally

by Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs). Money to operate the SHINE program is funded through a grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to the statewide SHIPs (State Health Insurance Assistance Programs). Our local ADRC is the Senior Resource Alliance, which covers Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties.

SHINE counselors do not offer advice or personal opinions; they offer information and clarification.

The goal of the program is to provide clients with whatever information they need to empower them to make the most informed health care choices for themselves.

Most new volunteers are not familiar with Medicare plans and choices, such as Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare supplement insurance, prescription drug plans,

Training on these subjects begins with a completed application and an interview. Orientation precedes a three-day Basic Training course, utilizing computers, and concludes with an open-book exam. A minimum of six weekly sessions working alongside a seasoned mentor in a SHINE office will further develop your new skills and provide you with actual counseling experience under their guidance.

Upon successful completion of this training, you will be assigned to one of the SHINE offices or counseling sites, attempting to place you at a location that is close to your residence. Updated information, along with additional training, is provided throughout the year through conference calls, webinars and regular meetings with local program leaders.

SHINE counselors are asked to complete a minimum of five client contacts per week (more during the yearly Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 Medicare Annual Enrollment Period) for two years. Many counselors also serve at outreach events by staffing a SHINE booth at health fairs or by giving presentations to community or private groups.

If you have a strong interest in helping Medicare beneficiaries in our community, are adept at basic computer and internet skills, are good at listening, and have a willingness to serve the public, becoming a SHINE counselor may be a good fit for you. For disabled veterans on the street, there’s no place like home

Homelessness seems a million miles behind William Crocker, but in fact it was just months ago that the VA Clinic in Viera referred him to the Bridges Patriot House, a transitional home in north Melbourne for disabled veterans.

Crocker had suffered a heart attack and was otherwise going to be released from a physical rehabilitation center back onto the street. Stress from a divorce that forced him from his home was the last straw, emotionally disconnecting him from the community.

“What a relief. It really makes a difference when you feel like you have a place to come home to, a roof over your head, a place you can make your meals,” Crocker said as he rinsed and placed the last dish on the drying rack, tidying up from the lunch he prepared for himself and some of his five veteran housemates.

“It’s whole lot different than being out there and not knowing what you are going to do the next day,” he said.

Like many veterans, Crocker still suffers post-traumatic stress from the horrors of battle civilians can never know. He spent three years defending democracy from Communist aggression as a machinegun operator in Vietnam.

Crocker will be placed in an apartment of his own this month on the heels of his 62nd birthday, a requirement to receive benefits to offset his rent. In addition to receiving mental health and career counseling, going to medical appointments at the VA Clinic and regaining self sufficiency skills, Patriot House residents get linked to every possible source of benefits available to them.

Two years old this month, the

facility has transitioned and placed a number of disabled veterans in jobs and homes of their own. Residents can stay from 18 to 24 months, but in actuality, success has been achieved in an average of six to nine months.

“We are thrilled to receive so many accolades for the program’s success,” said David Cooke, executive director of Bridges. Formerly known as ARC, the Arc of Brevard, the nonprofit has provided services and supports to children and adults with mental and physical disabilities in Brevard for more than 50 years.

With budget cuts, funding has dried up for services for the traditional disabled, Cooke said. The former Sherwood House sat virtually empty until it was renamed Patriot House and continuously filled to capacity with disabled veterans. As one resident leaves, another is placed in a bedroom of his own through a referral from the VA, the sole method of placement in the home.

Cooke is quick to give credit to the VA for funding and program director Jim Stroup for successfully creating and running the program.

“It just made sense,” said Stroup, a social worker for 25 years. “Our country’s veterans are now the major population needing disability services.

We could use our same skills to help them work on specific goals, save money, find their birth certificates and other documentation necessary to apply for benefits. We needed the money that the VA wants put to use. It’s a win-win-win for them, the veterans and the community.”

Flying on Air Force One was all in a day’s work

Retired Coast Guard Rear Adm. Wayne Justice has circled the globe 10 times, aboard Air Force One, no less.

As military aide to presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Justice was at the side of world leaders for several years. But, this enviable assignment was only one of many in a long and charmed career.

“You are really blessed when you can be in a career that is right for you,” the Cocoa Beach resident said.

Justice’s blessings began when he was 6 days old and adopted in Seattle.

“I was a pretty lucky guy,” he said.

His adoptive father, a public health physician, moved the family to Stanten Island, where Justice spent most of his youth. Because his father often treated Coast Guard personnel, Justice soon became interested in that particular branch of the military.

“My family said that since I was in first grade, I was always saying I wanted to join the Coast Guard,” Justice said.

The Coast Guard Academy was the only college Justice wanted to attend.

After graduation, one of his earliest assignments was a 95-foot patrol boat in West Palm Beach, a great base of operations for chasing drug-laden boats around the Bahamas and the Florida Straits, as well as rescuing hapless mariners who run into trouble at sea.

Justice also was in Florida when the Cuban Marielitos left their island in droves to get to Florida, as well as during the Haitian exodus of the early 1990s.

“I have stories of towing five boats at a time and of seeing many empty rafts,” he said.

“When you see those, you really understand the human tragedy.”

In total, Justice spent 15 years of his Coast Guard career in Florida, and six of those out at sea.

Justice’s Florida tenure also encompassed the hurricanehappy period of 2002 to 2006.

His last naval assignment was commanding a 400-foot ship out of San Francisco, a vessel responsible for serious drug seizures off the coast of Colombia.

“One time we were able to seize 10 tons of cocaine,” he said.

Competition is stiff for the job of military aide to the president of the United States, but Justice was one of the successful candidates, embarking on a three-year stint serving Bush and Clinton.

“Our duty was to always be within two minutes of the president with the satchel that holds the nuclear launch codes,” he said.

“You go everywhere with the president. It’s one of the jobs where you pinch yourself because you just can’t believe you got it,” he said.

From 2005 to 2010, Justice served as chief of operational policy, chief of capability and commander of the fifth Coast Guard District, which spans from from New Jersey to South Carolina.

Special to SENIOR LIFE Brevard Zoo will host a three-day special exhibit featuring impressive birds of prey from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day from Jan. 18 to 20. The exhibit, called The Raptor Project, will feature 15 to 20 raptors from all over the world. Guests also will have a chance to see a few take flight and learn about these amazing birds from master falconer and wildlife rehabilitator Jonathan Wood.

Wood will host two shows each day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. inside the Nyami Nyami River Lodge.

The exhibit is free with zoo admission.

Wood’s collection includes eagles, hawks, falcons and owls, representing every habitat on the planet, including the arctic, desert, rainforest, wetlands, prairie, woodlands and tundra.

Although many of his flock have permanent handicaps barring them from re-entry into the wild, these flaws are hard to detect. Today, they have been tamed and trained as charming ambassadors of the species.

Wood travels the country bringing insight to audiences on the world of raptors.

Classic musical coming to Titusville Playhouse

By Flora Reigada The classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical, “The King and I,” will be performed at the Titusville Playhouse Jan. 17 through Feb. 2.

“It is a dramatic, richly textured and uplifting tale of enormous fascination,” said Playhouse general manager, Steven J. Heron.

He explained that the setting is Siam and the year 1862, when English widow Anna Leonowens and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok. Anna was there to tutor the king’s many wives and children, as well as help the king change his patriarchal image, if not ways. Despite romantic “sparks” between the two, their Eastern and Western cultures clash. At first, the king treats Anna as a servant, but they eventually grow to understand and respect each other.”

Sandy Chamberlain directs the local production while James Harrison and Peggy Renshaw take the key roles.

Theater-goers will come away humming familiar Rogers and Hammerstein songs, such as “Getting to Know You, I Whistle a Happy Tune” and “Shall We Dance.”

“The incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet, ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas,’” will be performed in the show,” Heron said.

by Playhouse costume designer, Katy Ball.

“For months, she has been shopping for exotic fabrics and items,” Heron said.

He commended the backstage crew, who operate lighting, microphones and sound, and create the set. They work at the ticket booth, serve drinks and even clean the theater.

Titusville woman recaptures youthful dream

By Flora Reigada Nancy Boffo of Titusville has rediscovered a lost love. It is her youthful love of horses and horseback riding. It began when she was a child in Ramsey, N.J. “I’d play with toy plastic horses and dream of riding. I went on a few pony rides. One look into the pony’s soulful eyes and I was hooked,” she said.

Her dreams began to unfold when she was in her 20s.

“My sister-in-law had a thoroughbred horse,” Boffo said. “We made a deal. She’d give me riding lessons and I would teach her to cook.”

Boffo soon owned a pinto gelding and later, a registered quarterhorse mare. However, the horses and equestrian dreams were left behind when she and her husband, Mike, moved to Florida to fulfill other dreams, such as raising a family.

Through the years, Boffo yearned to ride free. Following a job layoff, she heeded the call and volunteered with an organization that does

therapeutic riding. After 32 years, she was able to get back in the saddle.

“But I didn’t have the confidence or muscles to post to the trot after so long,” she said. “Because the horse’s motion pushes its rider up and out of the saddle, I was afraid of falling off.”

Wanting to enjoy faster gaits, she signed up for riding lessons with instructor Pattie Peoples at Hidden Acres Rescue for Thoroughbreds (HART) in Port St. John.

“Trotting now comes easier and I am no longer afraid to go fast. I have also bonded with my lesson horse, Lucky,” she said.

Come January, Boffo will be leasing Lucky, renting him on predetermined days.

She plans to become involved with the Silver Saddles Club that HART is forming for senior citizens.

Skill level is not a factor. Group and private lessons will be available.

“I want my children to know they can dream big and succeed no matter how young or old they are,” Boffo said. SL
