They hope others like them, and those of lesser and greater means, will experience homelessness for the night to benefit those less fortunate at Family Promise of Brevard’s Box City event April 25 and 26.

Participants can bring a cardboard box, tents, tarps or other shelter materials and spend the night at the fairgrounds.

Cardboard boxes are often the only shelter option for homeless people, said Tara Pagliarini, executive director of the Brevard affiliate of Family Promise,

a national organization that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013. The problem is acute in Brevard, as the local agency has handled referrals from more than 300 homeless families since its inception, she said.

The families are housed a week at a time in a network of churches, with hospitality provided by congregation members in the evenings.

Each morning, adult family members go to a resource center to look for work and children head to school.

Through a network of 13 churches, the agency provides shelter, meals, case management and life skills assistance, with a goal of keeping homeless families together and helping them to become independent.

Several churches are in the local area and have already helped families “graduate” from the program to permanent housing and jobs. The group is working with the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches to help organize volunteers and resources as a model for other areas in Brevard County that will eventually form hubs in the north, south and beachside areas of Brevard.

The event will allow the community to see first-hand how it feels to be one of the families before entering the program.

“The idea is to come and experience a night without being in a home, and that’s where our families are coming from,” Pagliarini said. “A lot of families in Brevard County are going through that exact same scenario in their lives and so it’s raising awareness of just how prevalent it is in Brevard County.”

A minimum donation of $15 for individuals and $30 for families includes a bowl of soup from a “soup kitchen” inside the church gymnasium, live music, games and a showing of inside The box continued to page 13

Give and get wild at exotic adoption event and festival

Seekers of playful puppies and cuddly kittens, look elsewhere. This is not your typical pet adoption event.

The Exotic Pet Amnesty Day and Wildlife Festival on Saturday, April 5 at Wickham Park Pavilion is the firstever surrender and adoption event in Brevard. Folks who have taken on more than they can handle can give a potentially dangerous pet an appropriate home, and those seeking just such a new addition to the family can take it home that afternoon.

The public is invited to come from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and have fun while learning to care for, and learning about, all kinds of wildlife, with free games for children, information booths and wild animal exhibits.

The main goal is to prevent the overrun of reptiles and other exotics experienced in South Florida and other sunny climates where released pets have succeeded to the detriment of native species and humans. Burmese pythons, huge hungry tegu lizards and lionfish in the waters are some of the highestprofile invasive species.

“We do have a problem with exotics that get released into the environment,” said Penny McDonald, Eastern Florida State College biology professor and faculty sponsor of the EFSC Melbourne Wildlife Club, which is hosting the event for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). The FWC began hosting the events around the state last year.

People are invited, with no questions asked and no fines or penalties, to bring in

anything that is not a domestic pet or livestock: parrots, sugargliders, snakes, turtles, big cats, monkeys and all other reptiles, mammals, birds and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteer veterinarians will examine the surrendered animals for health issues. If they are healthy, the animals will be adopted out in the afternoon from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to people who have preregistered and applied for the proper permits where needed.

While the event is necessary to protect the environment and the native species that live in it, there is another valid reason for it: compassion, even for creatures not classically attractive.

“It’s not fair for the animal that is used to the comforts of hand-fed captivity to be released, under predation for the first time in its life,” said Liz Barraco, nonnative wildlife biologist and FWC Exotic Pet Amnesty Program coordinator. “And it’s cruel for people to keep these animals for pets if the owners do not know how to properly care for, feed and house the animal.”

There is no fee to surrender or adopt the exotic pets. The FWC is always looking for exotic animal lovers willing to foster or adopt. If people need to surrender an animal and have missed the event, they can call Barraco and she will reach out to the nearest foster or adoptive home to place the surrendered animal.

for several years now, said team organizer Dan Hancock, whose son Jack also took part.

“Our goal was $5,000 and as of right now we’re over that,” Hancock said.

Space Coast St. Baldrick’s organizer Garrett Lamp said the event is expected to raise about $320,000, eclipsing the group’s $250,000 goal.

“It’s amazing, it’s truly, truly amazing,” said Lamp, whose group collected $73,000 in donations in its first year and is now only $200,000 shy of its goal of raising $1 million in five years. “We are blown away by the generosity of the Space Coast. We far exceeded any goal that we expected to reach.”

Some of that money came from bids on auction items, which included wine tastings, travel packages, a signed Bryce Harper Washington Nationals jersey and even custom bald Barbie dolls, Lamp said.

Angel makes random act of kindness

Angel Andujar is 9 years old, loves baseball and donated more than $300 — all of his Christmas money — to St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help raise money for pediatric cancer research.

“It was completely his idea,” said his father, Jose Andujar.

Around Thanksgiving, Angel, who plays in the Viera Suntree Little League (VSLL), decided to send an email to his family explaining that for Christmas he did not want gifts. Instead, he wanted money for charity, though he did not yet know exactly what he was going to do with it.

When Angel and his family saw the movie “The Heart of Christmas,” about a boy with cancer, he realized where he wanted the money to go. The Andujars were aware that Angel’s former teammate, 9-year-old Caden Sichler, participated in the St. Baldrick’s head shaving event every year, and Angel decided to sponsor him.

“To a 9-year-old, that is a massive amount of money,” said Dan Hancock, who organizes Sichler’s team for St. Baldrick’s, in an email. “The amount of video games and baseball cards that could’ve been bought with this money is mind-boggling.”

Instead, that $300 helped Sichler’s team surpass their $5,000 goal.

Don’t ask Richard Margolis to put on his tuxedo.

It’s not that he doesn’t like the now 3,000 dapper collectible penguins he has amassed in his Suntree home, he just doesn’t want to look like one of them.

“Since I’m retired, I prefer a more laid back look,” Margolis said with a smile. The retired rabbi spent the last 17 years of his career as spiritual leader at Temple Beth Shalom in Suntree, still serves on many community volunteer boards and teaches university courses on religion. He remains a highly sought after expert in Middle East and related academia, regionally and worldwide.

What made him choose penguins as an object for collection?

“I have always had a fascination for marketing done with penguins, and there was a time when many major brands used a penguin as their spokes, er, person,” Margolis said, motioning to the popular Kool penguin that put the menthol cigarettes at No. 1 in the market.

Collecting fees Associations of all types are finding it increasingly difficult to collect past-due fees. Whether you live in a condominium, cooperative, mobile home community or homeowners association, the stressed economy has dramatically increased delinquencies. This month’s column will discuss various ways to step up the collection process.

In 2010, the Florida Legislature amended some of the association laws in favor of the association. Associations are now allowed to collect rent from tenants of delinquent owners. This stays in effect until the delinquent owner’s fees are paid in full. Included in the new amendments are strong penalties to the owner. If your association is attempting to collect fines, you are now allowed to place a lien on the owner once the fine amount exceeds $1,000.

Associations are no longer allowed to file their own liens. I strongly recommend you contact your association attorney for details on these procedures.

Consider enhancing your association’s collection procedures. The association I manage has added an additional written reminder. We also began phoning delinquent owners with positive results. We aggressively send delinquents to a collection attorney. Some attorneys do not charge the association upfront fees. The majority of their fee is usually collected from the owner. Again, contact your

association attorney for details.

Most attorneys will negotiate their fees.

During the past several years, I have noticed more and more associations adding a line item in their budget for bad debt or non-payment of assessments.

That exacerbates the consequence of the delinquent owner. The addition of the bad debt line item creates a situation whereby the upstanding owners are paying the assessment of delinquent owners.

Deciding the amount to set aside may be a judgment call. Each association may have different factors to consider. A suggestion is to set aside at least the amount of bad debt written off the prior year. A more conservative approach would be to track your three-year history for an average and add a reasonable arbitrary amount.

As you may have noticed, this topic requires legal knowledge.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act also plays a role. I recommend finding an attorney that specializes in association law to help your association sort through these issues.

Little League opening day is a major league success

Viera Suntree Little League (VSLL) held its annual opening day on March 1 at Viera Regional Park. Volunteers, sponsors and hundreds of T-ball, softball and baseball players gathered to kick off the season.

Besides a parade of all the teams and enough concurrent Little League ballgames to fill the fields, the event boasted a dunk tank, a K9 demonstration, vendor tables and plenty of food. The Viera High School baseball team and Manny,

the mascot of the Brevard Manatees, also were present.

Every job in Little League is filled by a volunteer, from players to team moms to the president herself. Volunteers help with concessions, uniforms, scheduling, coaching, team management and leadership. “I have a board of about 20 people that I can just completely trust to do anything,” said Cris Smith, president of VSLL. Leah McCombs, team mom coordinator and Smith’s twin sister, estimates they have about 65 team moms.

T-Ball is its own division, and softball has three divisions.

It was at that meet that junior J’V’on Butler planned to try out his new approach to the high jump. Butler, who tied for fourth at last year’s Class 1A state meet, is trying to stand back a little farther.

“Last year, I was just pretty much working on technique,” Butler said. “This year, I’m trying to go for height because I have the technique down.

“The more space I have, the more speed I have to pick up and it makes more power, so I can get higher and I don’t have to hold my arch as long when I go over. That helps out a lot.”

The boys are also counting on Jace Hogan, Marcus Barham and Julian Gardner, who will run the relays. Barham will also do the triple jump.

The girls, meanwhile, have the defending state champion in the high jump, Mckenzie Kilborne, and two dynamic Stanford-bound standouts in Gaby and Daryth Gayles.

“I’m having a strong season so far,” Daryth said. “I’m excited to see where it will take me.”

Daryth will run the 100 and the 400-meter relay, along with doing the long jump and, on occasion, the 200 meters as well.

Wakefield honors local volunteer coaches

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield hosted an appreciation day for volunteer coaches at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy last month.

The coaches, who participate in recreational and competition sport, and their players were treated to an exclusive showing of the documentary “Knuckleball!” along with a Q&A session with the pitcher himself.

They also received free admission to a Holy Trinity

baseball game.

“Without volunteer coaches, Brevard’s youth would not have access to the many benefits that come with participation in recreational and competition level of sports such as soccer, football, baseball, lacrosse, cheerleading, etc.”

Wakefield said in a press release. “Playing on a sports team is fun, enjoyable, and the physical activity helps combat the negative effects of more sedentary pastimes like watching TV. “I strongly believe in

thanking those who improve the lives of others in our community, so partnering with Holy Trinity to show our appreciation for all those volunteer coaches was a natural fit for me.”

Tigers tap Hooks Jr. to be their new football coach

New Holy Trinity football coach Nate Hooks Jr. wants his team to have the attitude of 1996 Olympic 400-meter track star Michael Johnson.

“He said he gave his opponents one of two choices … and both choices were wrong,” Hooks said.

Johnson was all about speed. Those who tried to stay with him in the first 200 meters usually wilted in the final half of the race. Those who figured they would catch him in the last 200 meters never did.

“I want my team to have that same personality,” Hooks said. “If you try to play up-tempo with us … you haven’t seen a team like that, you haven’t practiced against a team like that. If you try to come with us, it’s wrong.

If you try to let us go, we’re out (in front) too far, and it’s wrong.”

Hooks replaces Mark Ainsley, who guided the Tigers to a 7-4 record last season before leaving to become the head coach at Heritage High.

The 50-year-old Hooks was the assistant head coach at Titusville High, where he also served as the special teams coach, receivers coach and strength and conditioning coach under Wayne Lawrence last season.

Hooks wanted to thank Lawrence for giving him the opportunity to coach for the Terriers.

A graduate of Cocoa High, Hooks was inducted into the Cocoa High School Tiger Hall of Fame. He played wide receiver at Tennessee Tech and was named team MVP. He was attracted to Holy Trinity because of its high academic standing and the disciplined nature that creates in its students.

“We are absolutely thrilled to recruit such a talented individual as Coach Hooks into the Head Varsity Football Coach position,” Holy Trinity athletic director Lenny Paoletti said in a statement. “It is going to be a very exciting time for members of the Tigers’ football program!”

New Duran instructor wants golfers to have fun while they learn

Justin Blazer, the new director of instruction at Duran Golf Club, wants to make the game fun for players of all ages.

The 32-year-old, who came to Duran after more than six years at the Nick Faldo Golf Institute (now known as the Marriott Golf Academy) said one of the things that appealed to him about the job is that he shares the vision of general manager David Tomczak.

That is especially true when it comes to introducing kids to the sport.

“We want to make it affordable, and we want to make it accessible,” Blazer said. “That’s why we have the nine-hole, par-3 here and the lighted driving range. There’s really no excuse why a kid can’t come here.

“We’ll have clubs to provide for them. We’ll do anything we can to make sure they get a chance to see what golf is about. And we’re going to make sure it’s fun … then we let it grow.”

Blazer has built a reputation as one of the top junior instructors in the country. He has twice been named a U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Teacher and has worked with seven kids who have qualified for the U.S. Kids World Championships, including 7-year-old Asher Joseph, a Duran regular.

He also has caddied for Faldo, worked with several women on the Symetra Tour and also caddied at the LPGA level.

“I believe, especially for a new junior golfer, in a group program,” Blazer said. “Be around your peers. If you look at any other program … why is Little League so successful? Why is soccer so successful?

“They’re part of a team.

What happens is these kids come out and they’re like, ‘Wow, I’m meeting new friends.’ It’s more than just hitting a golf ball around.”

First VEMA Masters to follow championship

The Viera East Men’s Association (VEMA) held its annual Ryder Cup on March 6 and 13.

The first day of the match play tournament included a two-man scramble and twoman best ball, and though the day was shortened due to rain, the Blue Team took a 21-6 lead. The second day was 18-hole play, which the Red Team won 16 1/2-10 1/2.

Combined, the Blue Team won the 2014 Ryder Cup. HOLY TRINITY BOYS SOCCER Evan Enders made history as the first player from the Holy Trinity boys soccer program to be invited to play as a member of the FACA East All-Stars. Enders scored a goal in one game and had an assist in the other contest as the East defeated the North 4-0 and the West 4-1. The All-Star appearance capped a wonderful high school career for Enders, who helped lead the Tigers to the district title.

HOLY TRINITY LACROSSE Josh Moissand scored four goals and Charlie Barger and Trey Ville each added three as the Tigers defeated Rockledge 12-2 in a game last month that improved Holy Trinity’s record to 5-4. HOLY TRINITY TENNIS With the district tournament approaching, the Tigers were certainly having an excellent regular season. The boys were 7-1 while the girls were 7-0.

On the boys side, Matt Allison, Spencer Sperando, George Winston, Matt Ryan, Hunter Morris and Nick Keiter were all playing well. Both tennis teams were hoping to make a deep postseason run.

VIERA SOFTBALL After a bit of a rough start, the Hawks were playing better, particularly on defense, heading toward the postseason. Shortstop Kaitlyn Jensen — one of three Viera freshmen starters — has been playing well defensively and hit a three-run homer in a loss to Cocoa Beach. Sydney Brooks has moved from second base to left field and done a stellar job. Senior first baseman Kate Callinan was playing well defensively and leading the team with a .400 average.

VIERA TENNIS Top girls player Tori Pinchera was 3-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles, while No. 2 Gabby Stanifer was 3-3 in singles and 3-1 in doubles. Ana Hall and Nicole Rivera-Wynter had each won five singles matches and were undefeated in doubles.

Charity golf events provide glimpse at secretive golf courses

Joe Imondi has a secret that he’s willing to divulge. The gates at Indian River Colony Club aren’t always locked for non-residents.

There are opportunities for golfers to test their abilities on the par-72, 6,647-yard layout without owning one of the 771 homes in the 453-acre Viera development that caters to retirees from the military. IRCC was the host for 11 charity golf events in 2013 and Imondi, the director of golf and recreation at IRCC, expects the club to host that many again in 2014.

“We give each player that supports one of our charity golf tournaments a bounceback certificate that allows that person to come back and play here again for a $35 rate that includes cart and greens fees,’’ said Imondi, a native of Rhode Island, who will celebrate his two-year anniversary at IRCC next month after working at Suntree Country Club for seven years. “That certificate allows four people to golf together for that $35 rate. They can come back and give the golf course a shot for stroke play. Everyone wants to know what they would shoot while golfing their own ball. It’s a great way for us to get on the map.’’

There are no vacant lots to build on at IRCC, but there are 26 homes available to purchase. From time to time, it is possible for civilians to obtain a golf membership. But, IRCC’s bylaws limit civilian membership to the golf course to 20 percent.

It’s far easier to compete in the Daily Bread Tournament or the Fallen Warriors Tournament, two of the biggest fundraisers scheduled for IRCC this calendar year. The Daily Bread Tournament is scheduled for May 30 and 31 and the Fallen Warriors Tournament is slated for Nov. 1.

“Our members support and also play in these tournaments,’’ said the 49-year-old Imondi, who graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy. “Membership support has been fantastic.

DogFest heralds man’s best friend as ‘angels with fur’

Two Viera neighbors have teamed up to help promote the first DogFest on Sunday, April 6 at Riverfront Park in Cocoa Village to celebrate Canine Companions for Independence.

The specially trained dogs help children and adults, including injured veterans, live a full life with special assistance.

“They are angels with fur,” said Nick Heldreth, who with neighbor Michael Gaich are two of three Brevard board members for the CCI Southeast Region. The third is Michele Murrell of Melbourne.

Brevard is one of the communities where the dogs are raised, lanky pups in yellow and blue service vests frequently seen walked by handlers who don’t seem to have a visible need for their assistance. At DogFest Walk ‘n Roll, the nonprofit’s new national signature event, Brevardians will get to

learn the rest of the story.

The day will feature entertaining canine contests and attractions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as traditional festival games and fare for children and families. The public can bring their leashed dogs to come, sit, stay, walk and play.

Canine Companion dogs are Labrador or golden retrievers or a cross of the two, breeds scientifically selected for temperament and talent required for the job. Volunteer puppy raisers expose the puppies to every public experience possible to make sure they get used to various sounds, sights and all kinds of people. At 13 to 18 months old, the dogs are turned in to the CCI Southeast Region training academy in Orlando, the closest of five regional centers around the country.

Brevard board members have been instrumental in raising money to develop the 35,000-square-foot, state-of-

the-art facilities on eight acres there, with air-conditioned kennels to house up to 100 dogs, a veterinary center with a digital X-ray machine, and dormitories where the humans in need stay to receive training on partnering with their Canine Companion. All meals and lodging are provided at no charge to the human recipient.

Dogs that achieve benchmarks of physical prowess and ability are matched with a child or adult in Brevard or beyond with hearing, physical or cognitive disabilities, or placed in a facility to assist with healing therapies. CCI is not involved with dogs for the vision impaired.

Canine Companions can pick up items, open doors, alert a deaf partner of sounds and much more using 40 basic commands that are further developed for specific needs of the human companion. The skilled companions enhance

There are 13 families and five facility teams in Brevard whose loved one or patients are served by a Canine Companion.

The dogs are in service for six to nine years, and then retire to that family as a pet when a new dog is brought in for service.

The national organization is 38 years old and Brevard residents have been raising puppies and receiving trained dogs for nearly 20 years.

“Canine Companions are provided free of charge to recipients with disabilities.

We have some individuals in Brevard who are now on their third dog,” Gaich said.

“We’ve had dogs that have assisted a child with disabilities through school, college and now the workplace.”

While much help is received in Brevard, much is also given, Heldreth said of vital volunteers.

“People who raise the puppies are the backbone of the program,” Heldreth said. “They pay for all their food and care, and put in so much effort toward initial training. We could not do it without them and their efforts to instill socialization skills.”

Only four of 10 dogs selected for advanced training possess the skeletal health, talent, motivation, discipline and disposition required to make it through the rigorous process that, all told, will cost more than $50,000. Dogs that don’t graduate are still in such high demand that there is a long waiting list for those

Shrek comes to life at Viera High

Viera High School student actors and production crew face a theatrical challenge for “Shrek the Musical” to be held April 10 to 13, but its director/ producer Eliose Evans said they are up to the task.

“Shrek is a well-known, beloved cartoon figure. I’ve experienced bringing cartoons to life before in Seussical the Musical, but Shrek is a pop culture icon. People will come in with high expectations, wanting to experience the characters they have come to view as friends. I know we’ll be able to deliver the goods,’’ she said.

There is something missing and something added to the 2014 annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival, set for 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26.

Organized by the Natural Resources Management Department through the Brevard County BRAVE volunteer program , this family-friendly event will feature nature exhibits, children’s games, food vendors, live animals, and tours of the wetlands and adjacent water reclamation facility.

Missing is cornerstone volunteer and Florida Master Naturalist Charlie Corbeil, a Viera resident and unofficial docent who welcomed visitors to the wetlands locally and from across the globe, and held nature photography workshops and led tours at each festival.

The Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands, more commonly known as “the Viera Wetlands,” are one of Central Florida’s top birding and wildlife hotspots and a very popular site for birders, photographers and eco-tourists.

“On any given day, you can see dozens of different species of birds, plants and animal life from alligators to crested caracara; dragonflies to woodpeckers; and wildflowers and water lilies,” said Raleigh T. Berry III, Environmental Land Manager for the Brevard

County Natural Resources Management Department, which owns and manages the Viera Wetlands.

The entire 200-acre wetlands site is surrounded by raised berms easily traveled by car, bike or on foot. The berm roads will be closed to vehicular traffic during the festival.

Special-needs parenting tips good for all families

Top teaching tips for harried parents of students with special needs are also good for typically developing youngsters, according to the organizer of a March 14 parenting workshop at Brevard County School District headquarters in Viera.

“Most parents care about their children and do all they can to help them grow into happy adults,” said Heather Theobald, resource teacher with Brevard’s area Florida Diagnostic & Learning Resources System (FDLRS), which provides diagnostic, instructional, and technology support services to school districts’ exceptional education programs and families of

students with disabilities.

“But if we only focus on what more or what else we could be doing that we aren’t doing, it only stresses us more, which makes us less emotionally available to our children.”

Some of the best destressors are all around us, said Tracy Little, a coordinator with Brevard CARES, a child abuse prevention and positive parenting effort.

“I attended a conference and fellow attendees from across the country kept coming into the classroom marveling at the beautiful ocean and how it relaxed them. I realized I’d been so busy I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been to the beach even though I live minutes from it,” Little told the group of 200 parents

Aging Matters brings back ‘excellent’ wines for annual fundraiser

Wine experts and novices alike are invited to the seventh annual Passport to Wines Around the World, presented

by Aging Matters in Brevard and hosted by Miller & Hurt Financial Group. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the Space Coast Convention Center Holiday Inn at 301 Tucker Lane in Cocoa.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and guests will enjoy music performed by the Tree Frogs, a live auction and balloon pops. As for the wine, the event will feature 17 varietals, or wines made from a single grape variety, representing France, Spain, Italy, the United States, Argentina, Chile and New Zealand.

“We’ve definitely covered the premise of wine, which is Old World versus New World,” said Nancy Hastings, one of the founding owners of

Florida Wine & Spirits.

They make no assumptions about guests’ wine expertise, so if you don’t know a Spanish verdejo from a Chilean merlot, don’t be intimidated.

Each varietal was selected specifically to pair well with the food, helping anyone learn to appreciate the taste.

“The wines we select for this event are very excellent wines.

You can’t get them in the grocery stores,” Hastings said.

The cause is personal to Hastings, who is on the Aging Matters board and whose mother-in-law benefited from services like Meals on Wheels.

Hastings’ company has helped with Passport to Wines since the beginning, when Tony Hurt of Miller & Hurt Financial Group created the fundraiser.

According to Hurt, who is also on the Aging Matters board, he realized the nonprofit needed a new funding source, so he and his firm decided they should host an event. It turned out to be a

much-needed idea.

“Our traditional sources of revenue for most nonprofits continued to decline and the event has continued to grow,” he said.

Proceeds from the event benefit the programs of Aging Matters. Last year’s funds were used for Meals on Wheels, Senior TranServe, RSVP, and Home & Community Based Services to help seniors throughout Brevard County maintain independence and safety in their homes.

The event entry price is $50 per person. Register by April 4 if possible, but they’ll happily accept reservations until all seats are filled. Businesses can also sign up to sponsor the event.

Make Art, Not Trash

Project brings students, community members together

Recycle Brevard and the art students at Viera High School have teamed up for the second Make Art, Not Trash event meant to promote recycling and sustainability in the community. Already, local businesses and residents have been donating their cork wine stoppers to the cause.

The idea for the private, nonprofit entity Recycle Brevard evolved organically.

When Marcia Booth’s daughter, Melissa, watched a garbage truck taking away their family’s trash, she asked her mother where all of that garbage would end up. Soon after that, Booth planned a landfill visit with her daughter and ended up learning a few things too.

“At the time of our landfill visit, we were told that only 30 percent of people

In 2011, the first Recycle Brevard project launched when Booth began collecting used spoons at Redberry

Frozen Yogurt in Viera. She then took them to Viera High School art teacher Susan West, and students transformed the spoons into sculptures and other artistic creations.

“It was really a fun way to connect students, businesses and the rest of the community and brought a lot of awareness to recycling,” Booth said.

This time, Booth decided to go with a more widespread medium: cork.

She started by distributing bins at local businesses to collect the cork from wine bottle stoppers. She then delivered the cork to West’s students, who used their imaginations to create with the material.

“We have combined the cork with other extra materials in the art room, like old picture frames, mirrors and pencil holders, to really reuse a lot of items,” West said.

Cork is still being collected and in mid-April, the student cork art will be on display at the Art Gallery of Viera.

An open house will kick off the exhibit from 6 to 9 p.m.

April 12. The students will price their art to sell and the proceeds will assist the art program at Viera High School in purchasing digital cameras to document student work.

“We are looking forward to this event. It is great getting students involved like this,” Booth said.

Since 2011, Booth has operated Recycle Brevard as a volunteer. She recently became incorporated though and has filed paperwork to become a 501(c)(3) entity.

Booth said that her daughter, now 9, has been her biggest supporter and helper in the Recycle Brevard initiative.

“She points things out to me now that we should really reuse, and makes her own doll accessories and furniture from reused materials too,” Booth said.

Wine corks can be dropped off at the following locations: Total Wine & More of Viera, The Green Marketplace in Cocoa and Franklin DeGroodt Public Library. At the Avenue Viera, the following businesses are donating their own corks: The Melting Pot, Bonefish Grill, Pizza Gallery and World of Beer. Other restaurants like Murdock’s Southern Bistro in Cocoa Village, River Rocks on U.S.1 and Continental Flambé in Melbourne also have plans to donate corks.

“There is something that is very relaxing about interaction with Paco, for the patient and for the family members, that promotes healing. It creates a supportive environment,” Marks said.

On her quiet command, Paco without hesitation jumped the high clearance into a patient’s bed, taught to intuitively “tuck

in” snugly if he senses the patient is upset or afraid.

Whether in a facility or in a home, the dogs are amazingly talented, hard-working and disciplined, Gaich said.

“When you take off their gear, they are happy to play like any pet,” Gaich said.

Kidney disease plagues older cats

While there can be a specific cause of CKD such as an infection, certain genetic disorders, or kidney stones, in most cases the cause is unknown. Regardless of the cause of the kidney damage, once 75 percent or so of the kidney function is lost, detectable symptoms can arise.

CKD results in the kidneys no longer performing their normal jobs, which leads to outward symptoms. For example, a buildup of waste products due to decreased blood filtering ability can cause nausea, decreased appetite and even vomiting.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD for short) is an increasingly common problem affecting the aging cat population. It’s estimated that nearly half of cats older than 15 have the condition. In this article, I’ll explain the disease process and symptoms to help you identify early warning signs and hopefully allow your feline friends to continue to live long happy lives.

The kidneys are extremely important organs and perform several important functions required for the everyday activities of the body that are made up of an array of tubes, called nephrons. The primary job of the nephrons is to filter the blood, eliminating waste products such as urine. The

There is no cure for CKD. The goals of treatment are to control the symptoms and delay the progression of the disease. Fluids can help with dehydration, antacids can improve gastrointestinal discomfort and some veterinarians prescribe a

The progression of CKD is variable and hard to predict.

Some pets may continue with a good quality of life for years, whereas others progress

more quickly.

Early detection of CKD is important for multiple reasons.

First, changes in blood values can be tracked over time, allowing a better prediction for the course of the illness.

Also, the earlier the condition is detected, the earlier treatment can start, giving the patient the best possible chance of slowing the disease process.

Ask your veterinarian if he or she recommends bloodwork as a way to screen for kidney disease and other problems affecting older cats.

This year’s Quest Elementary Jump Rope for Heart event honored a former beloved student, Justin Solnay.

Solnay was in fifth grade at Quest Elementary last year and was waiting for a heart transplant.

Sadly, Solnay died before he was able to receive a new heart.

This is Quest’s 10th year participating in Jump Rope for Heart.

In honor of Solnay, Quest students are called this year’s event, “Jumping for Justin.”

“Solnay will always be a part of Quest Elementary and will hold a special place their hearts,” said Quest PE coach Christina Nestor.

Quest families and students helped raise a total record $7,000, a school record. Donations will benefit the American Heart Association. VV

Eat My Crust 5K bolsters Viera High athletics

Locals of all fitness levels are invited to run or walk in the third annual Eat My Crust 5K at 7 a.m. May 4 put on by Viera Pizza.

The race will begin and end at the restaurant, located at 5450 Stadium Pkwy., between the Mobil station and the Brevard County Fire Station #47. At the end of the race, participants are invited to a huge pizza party and celebration.

The proceeds from the race will benefit the Viera High School athletic department. A golf cart donated by Golf Carts Unlimited and a $500 gift certificate to Wesche Jewelers will be raffled off. The money raised through the golf cart raffle will be split between Special Olympics Brevard County and Space Coast Early Steps.

Last year, the race alone raised $15,000 and had 735 participants. Mike Acosta is the operating partner at Viera Pizza and also helped found the race. This year, he hopes to see 1,000 participants.

“This really is a community race, we see a lot of families who come out. We are kid friendly, and happy to see walkers in the race,” he said. “We are also trying to bring in some competitive runners from the area this year,

A runner himself, Acosta developed the idea for the first Eat My Crust race with running friend Brittany Streufert. Neither had ever planned a race before, but knew enough about the racing circuit to come up with some ideas to attract entrants and give back to the community at the same time.

“There are so many 5Ks in the area, every weekend, but ours stands out a little bit,” Acosta said. “We like to think of it as an event, not just a race. We give away the biggest medal in Brevard County and have a pizza buffet, live music and our mascot walking around for kids.”

Streufert now volunteers as the race director and Acosta tries to get the community and businesses involved.

“It really is a fun race and this year will be our biggest yet,” Acosta said. “I encourage people of all fitness levels to come out and have a good time.”

Registration on or before April 25 costs $20 and $18 for runners age 18 and younger.

Aspiring actors and models can meet with a top talent agent and casting director team during a workshop and scouting event hosted May 3 and 4 by The Viera Studio for the Performing Arts, 3270 Suntree Blvd., Suite 1113.

Powerhouse Orlando agent Nick Clayton and dynamic casting director Amy Baker Severson will present a threehour workshop May 3 in which students separated by age group will learn techniques, skills and auditioning tips, and gain modeling and print work insights from Clayton and Severson, including written feedback identifying roles best suited for each student.

Egg hunt accommodates children with allergies

Families with kids who have severe food allergies will have a chance to feel safe and have fun during an Easter egg hunt 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 12 at Mrs. Mango’s, 3500 U.S. 1 in Rockledge.

The event was the brainchild of Lisa Ficke of Viera, whose 4-year-old daughter Sophia suffers from severe milk allergies.

“My only hope is she’ll be able to feel like a regular kid, play and have fun, and nobody is going to have an allergic reaction because there will be no food there,’’ she said.

Ficke also is founder of a brand-new nonprofit called Food Allergy Resources & Mentoring (FARM).

“FARM’s mission is to increase public awareness of the growing food allergy epidemic across the globe and to provide a voice for those who live with food allergies. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and FARM intends to educate that village, so food allergy families can find support,’’ she said.

“They need not struggle alone to find balance between food allergy safety and participation in the wider world. Through outreach and events, FARM will inspire compassion and mindfulness across the community,’’ she said.

“Every year, I’ve had an allergy-free Easter egg hunt. I just decided, why don’t I open it up to the public?” she said.

Rather than request other events to accommodate for allergies, Ficke said she wants to set new expectations both for the community and the children.

“I really want to show Sophia that I want to be the model of her perspective and expectations. I’m running around town saying this is what we’re doing, please come and join us, and while we’re here, please don’t bring food,’’ Ficke said.
