Road trip brings comfort to daughter after mother’s death

For Bonnie Lee Nugent, a road trip soothed her bereaved soul as she healed and thought about the old adage: “Time heals all wounds.”

And, as time passed, Nugent said she was reminded to stop and look at things she walked past.

“You don’t know what you’ll see and learn,” she said. “This is the time we can slow down and reflect on what we miss.”

After the passing of Nugent’s mother, Anna Marie Amidon, a resident of Micco who died at age 94, Nugent and her husband went on a five-month sojourn that ended last month at their permanent residence in Massachusetts.

“The satisfaction of riding in our truck and being able to just look at things. Some days were hot, some days sunny,” Nugent said. “It’s just being out in the air. It was also about meeting people. I love meeting people.”

Among the numerous adventures the couple experienced were joyous reunions with old friends; stimulating conversations with residents in small towns; the exploration of local attractions and

sleeping in a tent on a reservation. They watched the sun rise and set. A highpoint of the trip for Nugent was achieving one of her enduring passions — to ride on as many excursion trains as possible.

Moreover, there was abundant joy knowing they were fulfilling Amidon’s wishes.

“Mother was very concerned the past few years before she died that my husband and I had stopped traveling,” Nugent said.

“She’d say, ‘you like to travel and now why haven’t you been traveling?’

“We expected her to live another 10 years. We didn’t know about the cancer, but there was just something that said, ‘Let’s just hang out here (in Micco) for a while.’ And that’s what we did, despite her urging us to do things.”

Nugent was encouraged by her mother to, “find something you just have to see, touch, feel, smell and go for it. It stirs something in you that’s special.’

“So, when mother left us, and I knew she was having a grand time up there in heaven,” Nugent said. “It just felt right to sell the house and get back on the road. I figure as long as I can move, I will.” SL

Local octogenarians keep everyone laughing

I keep my eyes open for magazines, newspapers — sometimes I’ll hear a joke and say, ‘oh, that’s good,’ and one skit that we did (tonight) came right from the ‘Carol Burnett Show.’ ” The current cast of The Downstagers is: • Mary Hamilton of Palm Bay • Jim Gaidry of Palm Bay • Karen Kosnik of Melbourne • Richard and Jeanette Bradley of Malabar.

Bradley is the director of the group and collects, writes and produces most of the show’s material.

The Downstagers currently are looking for a new male lead since one of the male cast members is moving to West Palm Beach in July.

“There’s a little poem that I sometimes read, it’s called ‘Keep Wiggling,’ ” Bradley added. “That’s sort of (it), never give up — there’s too much to do, there’s too much life around us. Don’t give up, you don’t want to vegetate. You can’t just sit (...) and watch soap operas all day; there’s too much (more to do.)” SL

One of the best ways to keep active in the later stages of life is to keep the mind engaged and the body moving.

One local group, The Downstagers, is doing just that. The Downstagers is a readers’ theater consisting of five octogenarians who perform skits, jokes, acts and humor for senior audiences. The group performs at various assisted living facilities within a 25-mile radius of Malabar.

“Being a volunteer group of mostly retirees,” officials stated in The Downstagers’ most recent program, “The Downstagers is a ‘readers’ theater’, i.e., actors perform with script-in-hand.”

On May 15, The Downstagers visited Century Oaks Assisted and Independent Living in Melbourne.

It performed a program entitled “Happily Ever After … Maybe.”

The group opened directly into a skit (involving an NYPD cop and a certain troublesome dragon), which earned a great laugh from the audience and kicked off the show.

Throughout the performance, The Downstagers used a variety of fun voices and animated physical comedy for each new skit.

The performers also had a number of props, including a mirror-frame, two drumsticks and even a miniature dragon.

Skits touched on modern issues to entertain both the senior audience and the staff members of Century Oaks.

There’s no shortage of fireworks for July 4 SPECIAL TO SENIOR LIFE Brevard County likes to show off its patriotism and July 4 is the perfect time as Uncle Sam celebrates another birthday.

Field Manor offers unique look into Brevard’s pioneer life

BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL Between the Kennedy Space Center, the Florida Institute of Technology and the myriad of research projects happening at any time on the Indian River Lagoon, Brevard County is known as being on the cutting edge of today.

With a little bit of a closer look, however, Brevard County also is steeped in history. On Merritt Island, visitors to Field Manor can view the home of the first family to settle on the island.

“In 1867, John Moss Field and his younger son, Charles Edgar Field, left Macon (Georgia), destined for Florida,” Field Manor officials stated.

“They wended their way across rivers and swamps with four horses and a covered wagon. Upon reaching Florida, two horses were stolen. At C.J. Joiners in Titusville, they hired a flat boat to take them to Merritt Island.

One horse fell off the boat and died.

The last horse was shot by a hunter.

John Moss and Charles landed, staked their land, and they named the area Indianola in April of 1868.”

After this somewhat rocky start, the Fields began to establish themselves on the island, growing crops such as pineapples, tobacco, mangoes and sugarcane. They eventually spread out into the first town in Indianola (Merritt Island).

Today, visitors still can see the rows of crops and trees during the half-mile drive into the museum. The museum itself is a historical structure

with areas within the house dating to “as early as 1880,” according to officials, with some possessions within the home from as early as 1860.

Field Manor was established as a living-history museum by Alma Clyde Field, who was the last of the Fields to live in the home. As a historian, it was Alma Clyde’s dream to have the house preserved for educational purposes, so that future generations might better understand what it was like to live in the 19th century Florida household.

In March, Field Manor came under the guidance of a new director, Korinn Braden, who informed Senior Life about the history of the museum and its importance to the county.

“It’s very rare to come into a historic home and actually see artifacts from the house,” Braden said.

“Oftentimes, you’ll walk in and (a museum docent) will say, ‘this would have been very similar to the style of table they would have had in that time period,’ where, with the exception of one piece in this room, (everything) came from the family.”

In fact, throughout the house, nearly everything was inherited by the Field family and carefully curated for display in the Field Manor home.

“People lived here for over 140 years,” Braden added. “Between three attics, a barn, (etc.), there was a lot to choose from; so it was a wonderful opportunity to create real-life exhibits with items that were truly used in their household, and that’s very rare.”

One of the reasons Field Manor

is particularly significant in today’s technologically driven society is that, as time passes, there are fewer and fewer opportunities to see old Florida life, and especially to experience it firsthand. This is not only due to that fact that old family farms are being sold off to developers, but also the nature of Florida itself.

“I’m glad that Field Manor continues to be here, and I’d like to see it continue,” Braden said.

“Because it really does show pioneer

life, and not much of it exists because it’s Florida: storms, weather and wood — so not a lot stuff survives. Every pioneer town has a different story.”

Neighbors Singing, entertaining suits The Golden Tones well

BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN Overda Stonerock and The Golden Tones bring joy to many in the Palm Bay area with their music. It’s undeniable that they have fun doing so.

The Golden Tones are a group of seniors who enjoy singing and entertaining. Stonerock is their esteemed director.

A few of the choir members also are part of The Pretenders, a lipsync comedy group which generally performs with The Golden Tones.

“Music is therapy,” Stonerock said. “It does for you what nothing else can do, equal to what chocolate can do for you.”

Stonerock has been the director for the past 10 years. Not only has she maintained its excellence, but she also has expanded its repertoire to encompass all genres. With skill and humor, she accomplishes her primary goal. She wants to make other people feel good — both her audience as well as choir members.

“That good feeling can last a few hours,” she said.

Pauline Harvey, a new member, said, “I’ve always loved singing, and (I) am enjoying it.”

Regina Chow, another relatively

new member, said she has enjoyed the experience.

“Singing is better than gossiping,” Chow said. “It’s fun.

It’s something to do, and a way to meet people.”

The choir performs at a variety of retirement and care facilities. It also produces a Christmas concert and a spring concert for the general public at the Greater Palm Bay Senior Center. It recently has performed at RiverView Senior Living Resort in Palm Bay and at Atlantic Shores Nursing and Rehab in Palm Bay. The all-senior choir varies in number from 20 to 35. At one time, its oldest member was 98.

BY AUSTIN RUSHNELL With a proliferation of cellphones, smartphones, tablets and devices, it is easier than ever to capture life’s moments in a photograph.

Some seniors might find working with digital photography a bit daunting, so Senior Life spoke with local photographer vonne Oak about how to take the perfect picture.

“Remember to take pictures of what you like and what makes you smile,” Oak said. “If you love butterflies, then by all means take pictures of butterflies.

If you like taking pictures of flowers, then take pictures of flowers.

“I find that it is more interesting to make your photographs tell a story,” Oak advised. “(For instance), if you find one white flower in a sea of purple flowers, then take a picture of both the white flower and the purple flowers, then you can ask, well, why is there a white flower in a sea of purple?’ Is it (representing) someone being unique?”

There are a number of different ways to take a photo, especially with a

smartphone, cell phone or tablet. “ ou can also try experimenting with different lighting,” Oak said. “Do not be afraid to try taking photos with flash and without using the flash.

Furthermore, you can take photos that are backlight, where the sun makes the (subjects) more shadow than clearly lit.”

One of the more common issues that seniors might experience with digital photography is the sheer multitude of ways that one can send and receive photos.

When taking a photo with a smartphone or any other device that has texting capabilities, the photo can be sent directly as a text. When looking at your library of photos on your device, there ought to be an option to send the photo as a text message. On iPhones, this option looks like a box with an arrow sticking out of it.

When sending a photo via email, the process has become streamlined.

Multiple photos can be attached to an email by simply clicking the attach button.

by a paperclip. From here, search files and find the photograph to send and then press OK. Presto! The photo is attached and ready to send.

“I feel like the old saying, a picture can speak a thousand words,’ ” Oak said. “I feel like I can express things and tell things better in a photo and showing people the story, rather than me trying to tell the story.

“My personal favorite photos are when friends are interacting with each other and not smiling into the camera saying cheese. (For instance,) if you and your friends like playing cards together, then try taking a photo of them intensely looking at their cards and not at the camera,” Oak said.

“Unless you are trying to show their entire outfit that they are wearing, it is usually best just to take pictures of people just waist up. By not including their legs in the photo, you can focus in more on their faces and their reactions.

Sometimes, the best stories are when they are looking at the ocean and you are not even getting a picture of their face at all.”

In today’s world of smartphones, tablets and laptops, it’s easier than ever to share your photographs and experiences with your loved ones.

Many devices are designed to be user-friendly and often use common symbols to help use their many different functions.

Be sure to keep an eye out for arrows, letters and even a handy paperclip to help show the many ways to utilize a device.

“They say that you cannot time travel,” Oak said. “However, I feel like when I am looking through photographs that I have taken 16 or 20 years ago, that I have stepped back in time to that moment. The photo, for me, captures not only that small slice of time, but also the memory of the events happening at that moment.”

Ecologist committed to sharing knowledge

BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN On a recent Saturday morning, Dr. Paul Schmalzer led a small group of walkers to explore the botanical wonders of the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary, one of Brevard County’s most ecologically diverse areas.

Walking slowly along the sandy path, Schmalzer enthusiastically identified plants in a friendly, often humorous way and readily answered questions using scientific and common names. He also pointed out a few birds, such as the endangered Florida Scrub-Jay. His commentary was suitable for all levels of knowledge.

Schmalzer explained that he leads such hikes because he wants others to be aware of the area’s biodiversity.

“I think it’s important that more people see and experience the biological diversity (that exists here), because as a scientist I think biodiversity matters….” he said. “It’s a message the public will understand better if they experience it more, if they see what’s out there firsthand. If you know what to look for, you see a lot more.

“In areas like the (Malabar) scrub, not everybody finds them appealing initially, but they are rich in the species that occur there,” Schmalzer said. “Not

everything is showy, but there are a lot of subtle elements to biodiversity that many people will appreciate if they get to see them.”

Schmalzer, a plant ecologist with the Kennedy Space Center, is the recipient of the NASA KSC Engineer/ Scientist of the Year Award for 2018 in the contractor category. A graduate of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a doctorate degree in ecology, Schmalzer joined the staff at KSC in 1982 and has worked for the ecological program there since then.

In addition to his career at KSC, Schmalzer spends a considerable amount of time in numerous roles as a volunteer with the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program and as a member of the Florida Native Plant SENIOR LIFE Jennifer H. Monaghan Society Sea Rocket Chapter.

King Center director reflects on career as he enters his last year

BY JULIE STURGEON Steve Janicki thinks his job as the King Center director is fabulous.

It’s an ideal situation, but it won’t last forever. Janicki will retire in May 2020.

“I think I have one of the greatest jobs in Brevard County,” Janicki said. “I’m asking people to give up two or three hours of their day to be entertained. That’s an awesome responsibility.”

The King Center, owned by Eastern Florida State College (EFSC), is a six-story, 100,000 square foot performing arts center.

It was built in 1988 so that Brevard residents could have entertainment close to home.

During Janicki’s tenure, the King Center has been the source of entertainment for millions of guests. It offers more than 115 shows each year.

“Thanks to Steve, three generations of King Center patrons have seen a galaxy of stars without having to set foot into Carnegie Hall, Broadway or the theaters of Hollywood,” said Dr. James Richey, the EFSC president.

For Janicki, it started more than 30 years ago when he was hired as director of the King Center in 1987.

“I take my job seriously, bringing top notch, quality entertainment to Brevard (and) trying to educate our children on the arts,” Janicki said.

Coloring books for adults a relaxing hobby for many

BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN About five years ago, adult coloring books became a trend. This activity was no longer the exclusive domain of children and intellectually challenged individuals.

Coloring books, color pencils, patterned templates, gift bags, coloring groups and parties — all things related to the activity of coloring — burgeoned.

Adult coloring books are not the same as children’s, although the basic concept is similar. In general, adult coloring books are printed on higher quality paper, have intricate designs and a wider selection of adult-related themes are available.

Advertisers presented coloring as a new hobby that is fun and easy so anyone can do it. The completed projects can be used as bookmarks or displayed on a wall to make ideal gifts.

Since 2014, the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library in Cocoa has provided space for coloring from 10 a.m. to noon every Monday.

“It’s a creative outlet for the public; it offers socialization,” according to a representative from the library’s refrence desk.

Materials are provided by the library at no cost and it is open to everyone.

The Space Coast Women Fifty Plus group also colors. Their primary goal is “to socialize, meet people and make friends by participating in various activities,” said Lynn Longenecker, a Palm Bay resident and the leader of the group.

Longenecker’s group meets at the West Melbourne Library at 2755 Wingate Blvd. from noon to 2 p.m. on the second and third Wednesdays.

They color or play mahjong, with lunch afterward more often than not.

Each person brings his or her own coloring materials. This group is not library sponsored and is open to everyone.

Brevard Veterans News Bugle Award presented to ROTC cadet at Florida Tech

Almost 70 years ago, during the Korean War, a young Army Infantry officer, John Cleland, heard numerous bugle calls prior to an attack on his position by Chinese forces.

As the Chinese deployed for the attack, the bugle calls increased.

During the attack, the bugle calls were at their loudest.

If and when the attack was held off, the bugle calls decreased. After one attack by Chinese forces was turned back, Cleland found a bugle during a sweep of the area.

Cleland was curious as to why the Chinese used so many bugle calls.

What he learned was that, due to a shortage of radios, the Chinese used bugle calls to direct their forces to move into different formations.

An example was going from marching to an attack formation.

Maj. Gen. John Cleland enlisted

at the age of 17 and, after service as an enlisted man, attended the Infantry Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

He commanded all levels of infantry units from the rifle squad to the mechanized infantry division.

Cleland also fought as a parachute infantry unit commander in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a commander, staff officer, a service school instructor, State Department officer, overseas military advisory group chief and director of U.S. Army Security Assistance during his military service.

The late Cleland is a member of the U.S. Army Infantry Hall of Fame. He received two Purple Heart awards, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal and the Legion of Merit with three oak leaf clusters, among others. He was a master parachutist and was awarded the combat infantry badge on three

Reunion conjures memories, fosters camaraderie

BY DARRELL WOEHLER The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall and the 32nd annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion attracted an estimated 80,000 veterans, family members and other visitors from across the nation and abroad to Wickham Park in Melbourne.

Billed as the largest reunion of its kind in the nation, the weeklong event organized by Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard, Inc. and coordinated by Richard “Doc” Russo, concluded May 12.

The Traveling Memorial Wall arrived May 5 at Wickham Park and was escorted by an estimated 1,500 motorcyclists, including some from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

A day later, veterans and others gathered for the Laying of Wreaths and the Wall’s opening ceremony.

Nearly 100 wreaths were presented by various veterans organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, social and church groups. Some brought wreaths for recently deceased veterans who were members of the sponsoring organizations.

Dr. Elizabeth Pepe of Indian Harbour Beach, who served six years in the U.S. Army and is a member of the First Cavalry Association, presented a wreath in honor of the late Ken Baker, who served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. She was assisted by Tommy Blackwell, sergeant at arms of Vietnam Veterans of Brevard and who served two tours in Vietnam in 1964 and 1965 and again in 1967.

During the opening ceremonies, U.S. Air Force Chaplain Capt. Jeff Hill of Patrick Air Force Base gave the invocation; Ken Torres sang the National Anthem; The Battlefield Cross was presented by Young Marines of Brevard; John Winchester played the bagpipes; and Rob Medina, a former Marine representing U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, gave an inspirational talk on the importance of children and tradition of the military.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey urged the audience to remember our heroes, and Col. Kurt Matthews, commander of the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, gave an inspiring presentation on family, tradition and continuity within the military.

Just walking along the Traveling Memorial Wall, which is a 60-percent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., veterans whispered names of places and battles long forgotten by many, but not forgotten by those who lived through such battles. Some of those names such as Khe Sanh, Quang Tri, Quang Traung, Plei Ku, Phu Lo, Da Nang, Hill 875, Slope 76, The Tet Offensive and many more are not forgotten. Vietnam and the All Veterans Reunion also includes veterans of Korea, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and others who have their own lists.

Vietnam veteran Martin McAlwee of West Melbourne got down on one knee at the Wall, placing a list of six names of personnel killed during a rescue mission near Da Nang. He was a captain with the 366th Fighter Wing, participating with the Jolly Greens rescue helicopters.

Billy Isaacs of Rockledge was a

Navy Corpsman assigned to the Marines whose location happened to be near a “soon to be infamous” Khe Sanh. The siege at Khe Sanh lasted 77 days with U.S. losses totaling 205 killed and 1,600 wounded. Enemy losses were estimated to be around 15,000.

“All the C-130 airplane pilots should get a medal for their daring under heavy enemy fire for bringing in supplies to sustain our troops,’’ McAlwee said.

Not to be lost among the stories of these veterans of war, is that of Billy Steer. Now a reverend, Steer was an Army Specialist 4 with a unit in the Central Highlands region of South Vietnam, near the borders of Cambodia and Laos. Hill 875 and Dak To saw some of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Volunteers keep Cape Canaveral National Cemetery running smoothly Interments, ceremonies and events at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery run smoothly, thanks in great part to an army of volunteers who are present for the families of veterans laid to rest there.

Since before a caisson carrying the cremated remains for the first burials at the cemetery in January 2016, a group of Cape Canaveral National Cemetery volunteers already had been formed.

These volunteers are true advocates for those who served in the military.

Priscilla Southworth was among the first to sign up more than three years ago. She now helps to coordinate

some of the 144 volunteers.

“I feel like I am paying back for my husband,” she said. “I want to do my share. He did his part. Now, I am trying to do mine.”

Her husband, Buck Southworth, who retired from the Air Force after

more than 20 years, is interred at the cemetery in Mims.

Alden Griffin also began volunteering before the cemetery’s first burials.

“I did not get to serve in active duty,” said Griffin, a retiree who lives in Titusville. “I look for opportunities to volunteer and help our veterans and families whenever I can.”

I’ve seen some of these volunteers in action. Some, like Southworth, answer the phone at the front desk at the cemetery’s administration building. Others drive golf carts and help to direct traffic.

Most of the veterans live in Central

and North Brevard, but some come from much farther away. One woman drives from Palm Bay once a month to volunteer in the office.

More volunteers are needed. Those who want to help can just show up at the front office at the cemetery Monday through Friday to get signed up.

Southworth said volunteers can work as little as one day a month and can even bring their personal items such as knitting or a tablet to be used during down times.

Norman still the heart of Veterans Memorial Center

Donn Weaver, the chairman of the Brevard Veterans’ Council, refers to Raymond Norman as “a rock of leadership and legacy” for the past two decades of the history of the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center and Museum.

“His imagination, energy and determination to make the center better has been a source of inspiration for many members and many in the community who support veterans and the center,” said Weaver, who should know all about Norman, since he is president of the center and museum.

Ray still enthusiastically volunteers for the center, bringing new ideas and concepts without a sign of slowing down. During his tenure with the center, Norman has served as president, vice president, secretary, chairman, vice chairman and docent.

The years have not diminished his interest, either. Now 84, the Merritt Island resident has turned to yet another type of volunteer service.

“I’m now learning to work in the store at the center,” he said.

Norman is grateful for his own

time in military service, because the Naval Air Reserve served this Birmingham, Alabama native well.

“I wanted to see the world and go to college,” he explained.

Uncle Sam gave him travel opportunities and also helped Norman foot the bill for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, which he earned in 1957. Norman would eventually expand his military horizons from the Naval Reserve to the Army National Guard.

In his second career as an engineer, Norman worked for Pan American, first in St. Petersburg and then at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

“Along the way, I picked up a wife and a couple of kids,” he said.

He lost his “forever girl,” Faith, four years ago.

“We were married 56 years, three months, 20 days and 38 minutes,” he said.

He worked for NASA for 33 years, remaining with the Army for many of those years.

“I would put in 2,000 hours a year with NASA and 1,000 with the Army,” he said.

Retirement from NASA and the

military did not mean the end of his working career. Norman became involved with Space Coast Sports Promotions, which orchestrated golf tournaments aimed primarily at military personnel.

in heavy fighting, he survived by pulling his dead fellow soldiers over himself as enemy troops came along and shot survivors in the head. He lost his right arm in that combat.

Steer has written several books and he travels the world to promote veterans’

causes. He lives in Cabot, Arkansas, and he often visits Central Florida. He was named No. 682nd by President George W.H. Bush as one of the One Thousand Points of Light.

Cleland gave the bugle to the Florida Tech ROTC department in 1994 to inspire cadets in their training to become Army officers. Today, the bugle hangs on the wall in the ROTC Military Science Building on the FIT campus. The Bugle Award is presented to a cadet recognized for leadership qualities including “personal example, infectious enthusiasm, and encouragement of others.”

The name of each year’s trophy recipient is etched into the plaque below the bugle. For 22 years from 1994 to 2016, Cleland presented the award at an FIT ROTC award ceremony, where he recounted the story of the Chinese attack and bugle calls. He died in October 2017.

This year, the 25th Bugle Award was presented to Cadet Luke Mullins by retired Maj. Gen. John Dreska. Mullins was cited by his ROTC instructors for exhibiting the leadership traits represented by the bugle. SL

Group travel popular among seniors

For newly retired seniors or those who are just planning a summer vacation, there are many decisions to make before traveling.

One such choice is whether to travel independently or within a group. Group travel can be cheaper and there are many options available.

Travel enthusiast Judy Kaufman recently shared some of her tips on trips. Kaufman often travels with her partner, Steve Salzman.

“We like taking trips where everything is planned out,” Kaufman said. “The all-inclusive

trips include the meals, and activities are planned so we don’t have conflicts about what to do.”

Group tours typically include popular sightseeing destinations, sometimes with a theme. One of Kaufman’s favorite trips was horseback riding in Belize.

Another was a breathtaking cruise in Alaska.

“With tours, we don’t have to do all the scheduling or make the reservations, so we can enjoy the experience more,” Kaufman said.

“The planned day excursions are more expensive, but we feel safer using them,” Kaufman said. “The guides come and pick you up and drop you off right from where you are staying.”

The camaraderie of exploring new places with others can be part of the fun. Sharing a laugh or conversation makes travel more enriching.

Of course, sometimes, group travel can be tedious.

If the lack of privacy is a concern, sharing a hotel room can be a challenge.

And sometimes, there might be personality clashes within a group.

Another option is traveling independently and joining group tours for a portion of a trip. Group-guided day trips provide a chance to gain access to popular attractions.

Seniors have good prospects for group travel. There are many tour groups designed just for senior citizens, such as Road Scholar or a local traveling club.

Kaufman and Salzman will be heading to Europe for a cruise and group biking trip in June. Everything is planned, so they look forward to enjoying the ride.SL

Just 30 minutes of exercise a day boosts health

BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER Seniors are urged to exercise and there is a real purpose for doing so.

Finding classes in the community that include strength, cardio and stretching are best, experts say, but just sitting less and moving more helps.

“The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity per week, which could look like 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week,” said Joann Puglia, who has taught exercise to seniors for 11 years in Melbourne. “We lose what we don’t use. Exercise helps lubricate the joints, reducing pain and stiffness present in those with arthritis.”

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines for older adults also indicates 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise (30 minutes a day, five days a week).

Benefits abound in exercise from cardio heart healthy exercise, lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels and cholesterol. It makes bones stronger, helps with pain in joints and aids in sleep.

There is evidence that strengthening is a key component in reducing risk of falls.

6 oz. Top sirloin or other beef steak cubes (12 cubes) 6 oz. Boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into ¾-inch cubes (12 cubes) 1 Large white onion, cut into ¾-inch squares (12 pieces) 12 Cherry tomatoes, rinsed 1 Red bell pepper, rinsed and cut into ¾-inch squares (12 squares) 12 Wooden or metal skewers, each 6 inches long (If wood, soak them in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes to prevent burning)

1. Preheat grill pan or oven broiler (with the rack 3 inches from heat source) on high temperature.

2. Combine ingredients for marinade, and divide between two bowls (one bowl to marinate the raw meat and one bowl for cooking and serving).

3. Mix the beef, chicken, onion, tomatoes and red pepper cubes in one bowl of the marinade and let sit. A˜ er 5 minutes, discard remaining marinade.

4. Place one piece of beef, chicken, tomato, onion and red pepper on each of the 12 skewers.

5. Grill or broil on each of the four sides for 2 to 3 minutes or until completely cooked (to a minimum internal temperature of 145 °F for beef and 165 °F for chicken). Spoon most of the second half of the marinade over the kebabs while cooking.

6. Serve three skewers per serving. Drizzle the remaining marinade on top of each kebab before serving (use only the marinade that did not touch the raw meat or chicken).

Many seniors are bothered by sleepless nights. Sleep experts offer reasons and helpful remedies for that tossing and turning into the wee morning hours.

Forty percent of the public, when older, has some sort of insomnia, according to Dr. David Bhola, a family medicine doctor on Merritt Island.

Among the reasons are keeping an irregular schedule, an afternoon nap or taking medications that might affect sleep.

“Use the bedroom for only sleeping or intimacy,” Bhola said. “Keep a regular routine at bedtime, make sure medications are taken properly and don’t use screens or cell phones late into the evening. Don’t read or watch television in the bedroom.”

“A senior citizen needs to get between seven to nine hours of sleep per night,” said Melissa Auricchio, the manager of Health First Sleep Centers. “Establish consistent sleep and wake schedules, even on weekends. Create a regular, relaxing bedtime routine such as

Georgia Milly, a resident of Victoria Landing in Melbourne, will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 10.

Milly, who has lived at Victoria Landing since 2015, was raised on a farm in Virginia. Her father sold grain feed for livestock and the farm had several apple trees. She recalls one of the biggest challenges was bringing in

the cows from the pasture each night.

The college-educated Milly was married for 65 years before her husband died. They had six children.

Milly worked as a dietician, with most of her work being in hospitals.

Milly moved to Florida in 2015 to be closer to her daughter, Mary Ann. “I was careful in my lifestyle,’’ Milly said. “I have lived a good life.’’

when you go to bed, keep a diary and write down everything going on with your thinking. Or make a plan like notes for the next day.”

If problems persist, check with a physician.

Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol or electronics and avoid large meals before bedtime, said Tim Carlen, a manager of respiratory care. Naps can interrupt your normal sleep routine.

Lack of sleep causes other problems.

“Sleep deprivation can lead to increased risk of hypertension and stroke, diabetes and obesity, atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease arrhythmias and heart failure,” Carlen noted.

“Short sleep duration is linked to drowsy driving, remembering new information, increase in depression and decreases the ability to pay attention and react to signals,” Auricchio said.

“Four things to remember to sleep well — quiet place, dark room, 68 degrees ideal temperature and fresh air as in no allergens if you have allergies,” Bhola said. SL

‘Oh Happy Day’ — The Edwin Hawkins Singers, June 1969

BY RANDAL HILL “I had been singing at my Pentecostal church in Richmond, California and at local R&B clubs — secretly, because the church would have frowned on that,” admits Dorothy Morrison, the booming lead voice behind the majestic gospel hit single “Oh Happy Day.” There was another issue that Morrison faced on the day of the recording.

“The lyrics were simple and they rhymed, but they were a lot to remember. I wrote two sections on my palms with a pen. The third section, I memorized. During the recording, I put up my hands with my palms facing me. Everyone thought I was feeling the spirit. I was — but I was also reading the lyrics. I ad-libbed on ‘When Jesus washed, oh, when he washed my sins away,’ and I threw in a James Brown ‘good God!’ toward the end.”

Edwin Hawkins was the driving force behind the now-classic song.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, he played the piano at Berkeley’s Ephesian Church of God in Christ. It was at his church in May 1967 that Hawkins formed the Northern California State Youth Choir, which was comprised of people ranging in age from 17 to 25 who had been recruited from other nearby

Pentecostal churches.

In 1968, Hawkins brought in Dorothy Morrison, then contracted with a local label — Century Records — to create an album of songs by the choir to use as a church fundraiser.

“One of the eight songs I wrote and arranged for the album was ‘Oh Happy Day,’ based on ‘O Happy Day, That Fixed My Choice,’ ” Hawkins said.

Composed as a Protestant hymn in 1755, the lyrics were based on Acts 8:35.

The LP was recorded at Hawkins’ church on a two-track tape machine.

Hawkins, who titled the album “Let Us Go into the House of the Lord,” had Century Records manufacture 500 copies.

Then, something unexpected — and delightful — happened. The album track of “Oh Happy Day” found its way into heavy rotation on San Francisco’s hip KSAN-FM radio station. Soon, Hawkins’ phone was ringing nonstop with offers from several major record labels, including Buddah Records, with whom they eventually signed.

Not all went smoothly, though.

“The church thought what we were doing was sacrilegious and insisted we remove the choir’s name from the record,” Hawkins said. “So Buddah renamed the choir the Edwin Hawkins Singers.”

In early 1969, “Oh Happy Day” was released on Pavilion Records, a Buddah label established as a gospel music outlet. By May, the tune had rocketed to No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The following year, the Edwin Hawkins Singers won a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance.

More gospel-influenced singles soon found their way onto the radio

airwaves, including Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Melanie’s “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).” And while ex-Beatle George Harrison was often vilified for stealing the melody to the Chiffons’ “He’s So Fine” for “My Sweet Lord,” he eventually admitted that “Oh Happy Day” had actually been his main influence. Shoveling snow not bad vs. washing off love bugs I have no love for love bugs.

Yes, it seems this time of year Floridians trade snowbirds for love bugs. It’s like the little devils wait until all our northern friends leave.

Then, they arrive just in time to depress us a little more.

Unlike our snowbird friends who leave a lasting impression of good memories, our love bugs leave a lasting impression of splats on our nice shiny cars if we don’t clean them off right away.

Sure, all winter we are rejoicing in not having to deal with that white powdery stuff known as snow. But, is it better here in the spring?

We go from no snow to yellow snow (pollen) to black snow (love bugs) in May! With real snow, at least you know which direction it’s going thanks to gravity. With the black snow, they’re going all over the place.

Ever try to walk around them?

With black snow, we don’t have to shovel it but it takes equally as long to deal with it (washing the car) before we can get back to our regular lives.

All of a sudden, we realize that the white powdery stuff isn’t so bad. At least, it’s pretty when it inundates us.

next to the butter. On the front door of the house and the outside door of the refrigerator is placed a green “Vial of Life” sticker. When first responders arrive, they know you are prepared.

Additionally, use the same completed and updated form to place in your wallet or purse, auto glove compartment, and provide it to close family members. The vial and sticker give first responders and medical staff quick access to your “permitted” information. This can save your life!

Schools slowly moving away from foam trays

Wishes can come true — activism and leadership might help make them happen.

All across the country, environmentally minded students and parents have been vocal about the use of polystyrene trays in schools, wanting to see them removed from cafeterias and replaced with compostable, reusable or recyclable alternatives.

A Washington Post article from 2012 reported how difficult it was to remove polystyrene (commonly referred to as Styrofoam) trays from schools. Even though student activists pushed for changing the trays, most school districts were reluctant claiming that the cost increase was simply prohibitive.

“I hate serving on Styrofoam, but when push comes to shove, you have to decide where you’re going to spend the money,” the director of nutrition services for Portland Public Schools said at the time.

To curb that obstacle and get rid of trays made from a component, styrene, listed as a “possible” human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency, some school districts got creative.

New York City’s Department of Education joined forces with schools districts from Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Orlando and Chicago to found the Urban School Food Alliance in

2012 to use their combined purchasing power to drive the change. That made possible for those districts to replace foam trays with a compostable, foamfree alternative in the fall of 2014.

That was a good idea, but membership to the Alliance was limited to school districts of equivalent size. Joining that alliance was not an option for smaller districts such as Brevard. That didn’t stop Brevard from pursuing other options to replace foam trays.

With almost five million trays used in 83 schools each school year, Brevard Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) realized that a more environmentally friendly alternative should be used in our schools.

Brevard FNS had been looking for more sustainable, but still affordable, options and had schools test different trays. According to Laurie Conlin,

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse is a national historic landmark in the town of Ponce Inlet. It is just south of Daytona Beach.

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse sheds light on impressive history

A great place for a one-day visit with your family and friends is the magnificent Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Station and Museum located just south of Daytona Beach.

At 175 feet in height, it is the tallest lighthouse in Florida and one of the tallest in the United States. The complex has been completely restored, and there is much to see and do.

Start with viewing the video in the Woodshed Theater and Privy exhibit building.

See a 20-minute program about the history of the Light Station. On the side of this building, view a restored privy as it was when it served as the family’s restroom.

View the outside exhibits of small homemade rafts that Cuban refugees used to cross 90 miles of open sea to arrive in Florida. You will marvel on how the rafts made land.

It’s then on to visit the three restored Lighthouse keepers and their families’ dwellings.

These dwellings are now home to multiple exhibits related to the Town of Ponce Inlet. In addition, the buildings have exhibits of furniture and household items as it would have been at the turn of the 20th century.

The complex also has the restored 1906 pump house that provided drinking water, a generator building that provided electricity, and an oil storage building for the storage of kerosene. All the buildings have been restored.

You’ll spend a lot of time viewing the Lens Exhibit Building that houses an outstanding collection of lighthouse lenses, including two fully restored first order Fresnel lenses. The original first order Fresnel lens from the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse is among the collection at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.

Local law enforcement praises bill protecting K9s

BY CHRIS BONANNO Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill May 1 that strengthens the penalties for those convicted of wanting to harm police K9s.

According to a release from the governor’s office, the penalties for “intentionally and knowingly causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or death to police canines or horses, fire canines or search and rescue canines” has been increased from a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony.

“Wading birds, waterfowl and shorebirds are among the most commonly sighted wildlife,” she said.

“There is a chance an alligator may be spotted. In warm weather, manatees may be seen from an observation deck along the Haulover Canal.”

Hiking trails provide access to a variety of habitats such as coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks.

The Cruickshank Trail along Black Point Wildlife Drive is among KingWren’s favorite destinations. It is considered the best place for viewing wildlife. Among these are water fowl, river otters, alligators, bobcats and snakes.

“I climb an observation tower for its beautiful views of the refuge and Indian River Lagoon,” King-Wren said. “The view is especially beautiful at sunset.”

The seven-mile auto tour costs $10 per vehicle.

Each year, during their annual Florida vacation, Laurie and Ron Roberts make it a point to stop at the refuge. The Michigan couple spoke enthusiastically of seeing at least 50 manatees, an osprey feeding her chicks, and a horned owl.

“It’s like walking back into another world,” she said. “It shows us the real Florida.”

Ministry bridges the hunger gap with weekly meals

BY FLORA REIGADA Each Monday afternoon in the shadow of Titusville’s Max Brewer Bridge, hungry bodies and souls are fed thanks to Under the Bridge Ministry.

It was founded by Curtis and Tracy Wright.

“The ministry began when my wife had a vision to do something for the community,” Curtis Wright said. “Our mission statement is to make God look good by being love in action.”

This is fulfilled as the group helps feed homeless people who sleep under the bridge, in local woods and throughout the community.

At the ministry’s first meeting, on June 1, 2015, one person showed up under the bridge to be fed. Today, the core team of eight with 25 volunteers feeds 70 to 80 people each week.

Due to problems caused by a hurricane, the group needed to relocate to a nearby pavilion at Sand Point Park.

Food is contributed by volunteers and a hot meal is served weekly.

“Veterans get dibs,” Wright said.

“They are always first in line.”

A recent menu featured baked ham, green beans, corn, sweet potato casserole, rolls and assorted desserts.

In addition to food, there is a short message by Wright, a clothing table for street homeless, a resource table and free haircuts.

“It’s also about the fellowship, feeling loved and important,” said team member Susan Overton Slayman.

Block unwanted calls with a few steps Unwanted calls often are harmless, but some of those calls are far from harmless as they seek your credit card information, identification or passwords.

All are a distraction and a waste of your time. Robo-callers have gotten more devious by masking their calls with phone numbers that use the first three or first six digits of your phone number.

If you don’t get a lot of unwanted calls, you can block calls one at a time.

On the iPhone, select phone, then tap the information icon, which is the encircled lowercase i. Then, select block this caller.

On an Android, tap on the caller’s name, long press the number and tap block/report spam. This procedure can vary slightly from device to device on an Android.

There are a lot of apps that take on telemarketers and suspicious calls.

Some are better at blocking calls before they get through than others.

AT&T and Verizon, as with other carriers, offer apps that block calls by identifying likely fraudsters. To identify a suspicious call, numbers are run against a massive list of robo-callers that is updated daily.

The most effective method is to limit calls to your contact list. On the iPhone, this will stop all unwanted calls from ringing on your phone. The only calls that get through are people on your contact list. Other legitimate calls typically go to voicemail.

On the iPhone, go to Settings, tap on the do not disturb, then select allow calls from and then select all contacts.

For an Android, do this with apps such as calls blacklist. SL

Brevard County will hold World Elder Abuse Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed June 15.

In Brevard County, the Department of Children and Families, Brevard County TRIAD and Brevard Commission on Aging will host the 10th annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (W.E.A.A.D.) Fair a day earlier on June 14.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Melbourne Auditorium at 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd. in Melbourne.

Admission, parking, breakfast and lunch will be free for all attendees.

This year’s Brevard County event will provide the community with information on resources available to assist them. Exhibitors will offer memory screenings, caregiver information, local law enforcement and public safety providers, community service resource providers, local pharmacies, meal providers and transportation providers with options and solutions.
