Jamieson is using her platform to bring awareness to pediatric illness.

“I work with a lot of children who are battling cancer,” said Jamieson, who was crowned the first Mrs. Brevard County by the Brevard Regional Pageant. “Out of the federal funding, there’s only 4% that goes to pediatric cancer.”

The two promoted service, leadership and meaningful community impact. Candle handed out hurricane preparedness checklists to the more than 1,000 seniors at the Hurricane Prep Rally.

The second annual Hurricane Prep Rally held July 17 included a host of community partners and exhibitors who shared valuable information on important storm-related topics such as emergency responses, poststorm planning, what to do with pets and shelters among many other topics.

An example of the important

information that could be found at the event came from Health First, which was the presenting sponsor of the event. There, representatives from the company informed residents about how they could take care of medication needs.

Buen Camino!

It is a phrase we heard and said repeatedly to sometimes-exhausted pilgrims as we walked the Camino de Santiago from Valença, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Our pilgrimage took us through villages and alleys of ancient stone buildings, through green moss-covered lush forests and along vineyards. The entire trek was 124 kilometers or 77.5 miles, which we did in six-and-a-half days.

Camino experience leaves you longing to do it again

Sometimes when I hear or learn the name of a building, bridge or park, I am curious to know a little about the namesake.

I had been to Erna Nixon Park on several occasions and knew a little about the person for whom it was named. So, we wrote a story about the park that explained who Erna Nixon was.

There are so many others — Pineda Causeway, Lori Wilson Park, Max Brewer Bridge and others. I know some of these and about the people for whom they were named, but I wonder if others do.

We have decided to explore and investigate some of these names and write three or four paragraphs for each edition about one of the names mentioned. We’ll see how long a series we can make of what we might call Behind the Name.

We have done many series of stories, including one about hobbies and passions, which has run for two years; This Old Church, which is in the 12th installment of the series; and others that you read each month.

I don’t know how long we will be able to continue with the This Old Church series. However, we’ll search again next month to see if we find another to highlight.

As e-bikes proliferate, the Florida Legislature took up a bill that would have gone into effect July 1, but the measure was vetoed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. That leaves any additional regulations to those already existing up to counties and local communities. We’ll tell you about e-bike regulations in this edition of Senior Life.

Brevard County has many elderly residents who have little or no family to check on them from time to time. We know a recent case and have heard of others where elderly residents have died in their homes and no one knew — sometimes for days.

That led us to check whether there was a system or organization that helps to check on seniors who live alone. We tell you what we have found in a story in this edition.

Have you ever heard of children reading stories to horses? Yes, I said horses. This gives children a captured audience as they learn to read without being scored or judged. Apparently, the activity helps children overcome reading anxiety and builds the child’s confidence. The activity is being done at Harmony Farms, a therapeutic horse-riding program in Cocoa for children and adults with certain disabilities.

Future of Rockledge hospital property likely to remain hospital zone

BY CHRIS BONANNO What will be the future use of the old Rockledge hospital property?

While its exact use is not entirely clear, it is expected to remain a hospitalzoned area.

About 100 people gathered Thursday, July 9 at Rockledge City Hall for a discussion on the future of the old hospital property which Orlando Health bought in Oct. 2024. The buildings are being demolished.

Residents had an opportunity to ask the City’s Community Development Director John Cooper questions about the property.

“We live in the area and we’re concerned about what the property will be used for and the area is very dear to us.”

“I think it’s always (good) to have community engagement, but I also believe that having the right information for the community is the most important. Coming to the source to get the right information makes it even more valuable, so that we can get the narrative corrected for them by giving them the information,” said Cooper, following the meeting. “So, community engagement is key. Right information makes it even more valuable.”

Most of the main building has been demolished.

Woodturning becomes a lifetime hobby for some

BY R. NORMAN MOODY Paul Jackson was in high school in Fairmont, West Virginia, when his love of woodturning was ignited.

“I started in 1973 in high school shop,” he said. “The teacher was making a finial (ornament) for a gun cabinet. I just thought it was so cool.”

The now retired air traffic controller and FAA engineer has been turning wood since then, making artful pieces as a hobby for 53 years.

Jackson, who lives in Malabar, is the secretary for the Space Coast Woodturners, a group of hobbyists who meet and work on their projects at Melbourne Makerspace. There, several lathes might be running at the same time on most Saturdays.

electronics, software coding, crafting and 3D printing. It is located on Wickham Road, north of NASA Boulevard.

In the woodturners shop, Jeff Evans spun his first piece on a recent Saturday with the close guidance of Jackson.

“This is my first 45 minutes,” Evans said. “It is definitely interesting.”

Space Coast Woodturners has lathes that can be used by newcomers to the hobby. Lathes can cost $700 or more and quality tools can be about $100 each.

Ninety-one-year-old Nelson Palmer is a regular at the woodturners shop, though he started his own shop at home.

Palmer said he likes the creativity woodturning allows.

“You are in control of that transition,” he said.

“I came one night,” she said, as she worked on the lathe. “I got hooked. They teach you.”

Martinez, who has a bachelor’s degree in fine art and worked as a tractor trailer driver for Walmart, is among the active members of the Space Coast Woodturners.

“I really love this thing,” she said.

Jackson said that anyone who wants to try woodturning can just stop by during one of its Saturday morning open houses. Space Coast Woodturners has more than 50 members, of which about 20 are the most active. On a recent Saturday there were seven people working on their woodturning projects.

Jackson and others create bowls, vases, pens, platters and many other items on the lathe. For most of them, it is simply a hobby.

“Most turners do it for the fun of it,” he said.

Jackson said that an intricate bowl made of 1,400 pieces of wood of four different species he created took about 80 hours of work.

“You can be creative and still come up with something functional,” he said.

Margaritaville Hotel coming soon to Cape Canaveral

BY MIKE GAFFEY Officials broke ground on a 150room Compass by Margaritaville Hotel during a rain-shortened ceremony on July 13.

A short distance from Port Canaveral’s cruise terminals and the forthcoming Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center, the six-story Compass by Margaritaville Hotel in Cape Canaveral at 8955 Columbia Road is expected to open in late 2027, said Chris Taub, the hotel’s general manager.

“We’re the closest hotel to the cruise ships,” Taub said. “We’re really excited to be part of the expanding and growing port operations. Hopefully, we will be the beginning and end of everyone’s cruise ship adventure as we bring a new and exciting hospitality experience to the area.”

The boutique hotel’s aim is to capture the laid-back, relaxing spirit of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who sold more than 20 million albums,

entertained his devoted fans known as Parrotheads for decades and built a business empire inspired by his tropical tunes, including his signature hit “Margaritaville.” The Mississippi native died in 2023 at age 76.

“The casual luxury Compass brand encapsulates the fun vibes of Margaritaville and the life and legacy of Jimmy Buffett with his passion for the beach and being involved in the community,” Taub said. “It’s also a very special location for us because Jimmy

Buffett had a huge passion for space.”

The Margaritaville boutique hotel will feature two restaurant concepts, a sunset terrace, a backyard area with an outdoor pool, live entertainment, lawn games and fire pits. The hotel will also feature two meeting spaces for groups and a rooftop observation deck for unobstructed views of sunrises and sunsets, cruise ships and rocket launches from nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Once the hotel opens, guests will enjoy the Sunrise at Compass complimentary breakfast, a welcome cabana with daily light snacks and refreshment, and a provision shop with Compass Hotel and Margaritaville merchandise.

The Cape Canaveral location being developed by Melbourne-based Certified General Contractors Inc. is one of three Compass Hotels scheduled to open in the coming months, with one in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. and another in Nassau Bay, Texas. Six other

Compass Hotels are open, including three Florida locations in Flagler Beach, Naples and Anna Maria Sound.

Taub said the new hotel project has no connection to Compass Landing by Margaritaville in Melbourne, a planned riverfront resort along U.S. 1 that’s been delayed by rising construction costs.

The hotel is a few hundred feet from State Road A1A, of which a segment was designated the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway after Buffett’s death. Buffett wrote his fifth studio album, “A1A,” while living in Florida and the album was released in 1974.

“It’s a really fun opportunity to be able to build in Cape Canaveral,” Taub said of the hotel’s location.

“We want to be a place that not only welcomes cruise ship travelers, but also serves as a gathering spot for the local community to eat, drink, be entertained and enjoy the Compass by Margaritaville vibes.”

Plans underway for new public safety training center in Rockledge

The City of Rockledge aims to give its public safety employees the added resources and training they need to better serve the community.

Renewed plans are underway for the development of a Public Safety Regional Training Center to be located at the corner of Murrell Road and Commerce Court.

The city council recently approved the funds for the pre-design of the facility that will serve both its police and fire personnel.

“The new Public Safety Regional Training Center will be an all inclusive, state-of-the-art law enforcement, emergency medical and firefighting training center, which will be a robust training facility with modern technology,” the Rockledge

City Manager Brenda Fettrow said.

“Rockledge just acquired its first ladder truck, and we are excited the new facility will have a three-story training tower for ladder, hose and rescue work.”

All public safety personnel are trained at Fire Station 37, in addition to ongoing on-the-job training. The city has 125 public safety employees — 56 police officers and 41 firefighting personnel.

the Public Safety director and Police Chief.

Fire Chief Jim Wilson also has concerns.

“We currently don’t have live fire training, even though we have live fire training instructors. With the fire and emergency services being the first responders to all types of incidents, complex and skilled training is a must. The new training tower and fire training structure will be wonderful additions,” Wilson said.

In addition to the three-story training tower, the new facility will have a confined space rescue

simulator, vehicle fire simulator, vehicle extrication pad and a classroom. It will feature a multi-level, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) confidence maze that is an enclosed, highly confined structural prop used by fire departments and rescue teams to simulate zero visibility, high-stress environments.

It will also have a vehicle Class A burn building, which is a specialized fire training structure engineered for firefighters to conduct live-fire drills using ordinary combustible materials such as wood and paper.

“We also plan to share our new Regional Training Center with other police and fire agencies in Brevard County,” Fettrow said.

Retired FDNY lieutenant cherishes memories of his brother lost on 9/11

BY ERNIE DORLING For those who knew Thomas Carlo Moody, the memories are not only of a brave FDNY captain who made the supreme sacrifice on September 11, 2001. It is also of a quiet man with a quick sense of humor, a brilliant mind and a lifelong commitment to serving others.

“Tommy was never the loudest person in the room,” his brother, retired FDNY Lieutenant Mike Moody, said. “As a child, he was reserved and studious, but he also possessed a mischievous streak that often caught family members by surprise. Tommy was quiet. But he was a jokester, too. He’d wait for just the right moment and come out with something that would have everyone laughing.”

Moody excelled academically, particularly in mathematics. His talent for numbers and problemsolving led him to pursue a career as a chemical engineer in the petroleum industry. For several years, he enjoyed success in the field, but as employment opportunities became less reliable, he returned home to New York.

That decision brought him back to a family tradition of service. Moody joined the FDNY, following in the footsteps of his father, his uncle and his brothers, Mike and Frank. His engineering background quickly proved invaluable. Combining technical expertise with calm leadership, Moody rose through the ranks and eventually became a captain leading a specialized FDNY hazardous materials unit.

On September 11, 2001, Moody answered the call as he always had.

Mike Moody learned of the attacks the same way millions of Americans did — by watching the horrifying images unfold on television.

“I immediately began trying to learn where Tommy was,” Mike Moody said. “Hour after hour passed with little information.

— Mike Moody As reports continued to emerge from Ground Zero, it became increasingly apparent that Moody and many members of his Hazmat unit were among those who had perished.

Unable to sit and wait, Mike and another retired FDNY member got into a vehicle and drove through the night to New York. Their mission was simple — find answers about Moody and provide support for his family, including his four children and, especially, Moody’s mother,

Angelina.

Once in New York, Mike Moody accompanied Moody’s wife to meetings in Manhattan with thenGovernor George Pataki and Mayor Rudy Giuliani as city leaders worked to assist families affected by the attacks. Yet none of those meetings prepared Mike Moody for the fact that his brother was gone, and for helping Moody’s family and his mother come to grips with the fact that he was not coming back.

Today, 25 years later, Mike Moody continues to reflect on the extraordinary courage his brother displayed, but he is equally inspired

by Moody’s wife and children.

He speaks proudly of how they persevered through unimaginable loss and went on to build successful and meaningful lives.

Mike Moody is also deeply moved by the countless acts of heroism witnessed that day.

“So many people risked everything to save their fellow man,” he said. “I take great comfort in that.”

For Mike Moody, preserving the memory of Sept. 11 is a responsibility that grows more important with each passing year.

His message to younger generations is simple and heartfelt.

Tributes to veterans unveiled in Brevard during America’s 250th

Brevard County loves and honors its veterans, and it shows.

During the weekend celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, three major projects paying tribute to veterans were unveiled in Brevard County.

The City of Satellite Beach unveiled its Military Honor Wall in honor of America’s 250th birthday.

The tribute wall at the Scotty Culp Municipal Complex features large bronze logos of each of the U.S. military branches and a garden with winding brick sidewalks.

The dedication plaque reads “The City of Satellite Beach dedicates this space in honor of all the service members, past and present, for their unwavering patriotism and for inspiring us to build stronger

communities together — All gave some, some gave all.”

Melbourne Square Mall officially unveiled the America 250 Mural, a 25-foot by 14-foot painting depicting military members from the different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Mural artist Lance Behringer, a Melbourne native who is a corporal with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, painted the mural.

He was joined at the dedication

by American Legion Post 420, Daughters of the American Revolution, veterans and city, county and state officials in a patriotic celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Officials included State Senator Debbie Mayfield and Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

Also, Grant-Valkaria dedicated its Veterans Memorial Park on Valkaria Road.

These dedications are not isolated exceptions. I know of several parks and roadways named after veterans.

First is the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center with dozens of monuments and tributes to veterans.

There are parks in Melbourne, Cape Canaveral, Titusville, Palm Bay and other communities on the Space Coast.

In Cocoa, there are statues honoring Medal of Honor recipients, Private 1st. Class Emory Bennett, who was awarded posthumously, and Staff Sgt. Melvin Morris of Cocoa.

There is a portion of State Road 520 named for the late George Taylor Sr., who served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and was the founder of the National Veterans Homeless Support, headquartered in Cocoa.

Roadways elsewhere in Brevard County are named for other veterans.

I am likely missing some of the tributes to veterans in Brevard County.

I am never surprised when the residents of Brevard County — where a large percentage of its residents are veterans — pay tribute to service members. SL

Despite the dangers, he would return to Vietnam twice more.

During one tour, he served aboard the hospital ship USS Repose, providing medical care to wounded service members. On another tour, he led the medical support for the Army/ Navy Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta.

Following his combat service, Hagen continued advancing through the ranks while serving in a variety of medical leadership positions.

His assignments included duty as a staff surgeon in Pensacola; Yokosuka, Japan; and Jacksonville, Florida.

In 1991, Hagen reached the pinnacle of Navy medicine when he became the 31st Surgeon General of

Right after graduation, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Medical Corps.

His first assignment would prove to be one of the most memorable of his career. After landing with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines in Chu Lai, Vietnam, Hagen, who was the battalion surgeon, established a battlefield aid station to care for combat casualties.

the United States Navy. He served in that capacity until 1995.

In that role, he was responsible for all aspects of Navy medicine, overseeing healthcare services for sailors, Marines, retirees and their families worldwide.

“Probably my most rewarding assignment was serving as commander of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the nation’s premier military medical facilities,” Hagen said.

After retiring from the Navy, Hagen continued his commitment to healthcare and education. He served for 10 years as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center, helping guide the institution’s medical education, research and patient care missions.

Today, Hagen, who, with his wife, Karen, a former Navy nurse, just celebrated 53 years of marriage and

They are also founders of the new aquarium coming to Port Canaveral.

Though retired from active service, Hagen remains engaged in the military community through the Military Officers Association of America (MOAACC) and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.

Looking back on a career that took him from the battlefields of Vietnam to the highest levels of military medicine, Hagen remains proud of the opportunity to care for those who answered their nation’s call.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege,” he said, “to serve the men and women who serve our country.”

From treating wounded Marines under enemy fire in Vietnam to leading Navy medicine around the world, retired Vice Admiral Donald F. Hagen has spent a lifetime serving those who serve their country.

New mall mural pays tribute to U.S. service members

BY CHRIS BONANNO A new mural, inside the Melbourne Square Mall, stands in honor of U.S. service members.

The mural honoring U.S. military service members was completed in time for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s Declaration of Independence.

It was painted by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Lance Behringer, who has been with BCSO for 16 years and currently works with the office’s K-9 unit. He partners with K-9 Zeke.

“I wanted to do something very meaningful to all the current, past and present military service members who served our country,” Behringer said.

The mural features a large American flag and service members in uniforms, standing as tall as 9 feet, representing different branches of the U.S. military. There is also a large POW-MIA (Prisoners of WarMissing in Action) flag along with an America 250 logo.

“It was just in celebration of America’s 250,” said Cindy Rodenhizer, the general manager of Melbourne Square Mall. “We wanted to do something to celebrate the season and the occasion, so we partnered with Lance and he came up with some great ideas and brought the vision to life.”

The mural is “about 25 feet wide and about 13 or 14 feet tall,” said Behringer, who added that the painting of a Marine holding a U.S. flag in the center of the mural is about 9-feet tall.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mural on July 2, Behringer presented a check for $1,900 to the Brevard County

Sheriff’s Office for the K-9 unit.

“The handlers and the dogs can always use equipment and training, so those proceeds will help,” Behringer said.

American Legion Post 420 has a box in front of the mural to properly retire worn American flags.

“I think it (the mural) shows the community pride and the area pride and the stores pride as well,” Rodenhizer added. “We have gotten many positive comments and responses from our daily patrons to people coming here just specifically to see it. It’s been incredible.” SL

Grant-Valkaria dedicates Veterans Memorial Park

Grant-Valkaria recently dedicated its newly completed Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to its town hall on Valkaria Road.

The park includes a Battlefield Cross — a display of a bronze boot, rifle and helmet — along with lifesize bronze statues of a male and female military member and a bronze service K-9 statue. It also has plaques, including one with the Pledge of Allegiance, and shells with patriotic messages on a picnic table under a large tree at the park.

Flagpoles display the American flag and Missing In Action/Prisoner of War flag at the 4,900-square-foot memorial park.

“All of our military armed forces services are represented,” said Katrina Strand, a volunteer with the Grant-Valkaria Community Association. “We have at least six walls that have bricks that have been purchased from anywhere from … memorial bricks for those who have passed away (to) those who are currently serving. We also have our Oath of Enlistment and different things that represent our armed services and their sacrifice and commitment.”

“Their Duty was to Serve. Our Duty is to Remember,” reads a large inscription on a wall.

Hundreds attended a ribboncutting ceremony, which was held July 11 and included the presentation of colors, speeches, a ribbon cutting and a rifle salute.

“I’ve always wanted to do something at least on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, do something, but this idea came up and it’s just wonderful.”

Lois McManus, the president of the Grant-Valkaria Community Association, said the community came together to make the park a reality.

“Everything you see out there today was either donated moneywise by selling bricks, T-shirts, whatever we could sell,” McManus said. “We have a lot of businesses in this town that supported us and did a lot of work for no charge, so we were thankful for that.”

McManus added that the project

took two-and-a-half years to complete.

“We gave us a three-year timeline,” McManus said. “We did it in twoand-a-half years and, of course, way under budget.”

Purple Heart local chapter set to salute 10 medal recipients Since 2017, the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 453 has honored 10 veterans each year. Stories of each of the veterans, including how they were injured are told during the ceremony. This year, more focus will be on what the honorees have done after their service; (two are deceased).

“We’re trying to shift the focus,” said Keith Van Buren, the commander of the Space Coast Chapter 453. “We really like to highlight what they have done after their service, after they were injured. They are not letting that keep them down.”

The ceremony has grown through the years.

“This ceremony gets better every year,” said Donn Weaver, an honorary member of Chapter 453, “As there will be an outstanding group of people coming to honor the recipients.”

The Purple Heart is not an award any soldier wants to earn.

“We should honor them for what they did serving our country,” said Marek, a past commander of Chapter 453.

It is a military merit awarded to those injured or killed in action against the enemy.

Every year, August 7 marks National Purple Heart Day, a time when people can reflect on and show appreciation for the sacrifices so many soldiers have given in service to the nation.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Space Coast Chapter 453 will hold its ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9 at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Museum on Merritt Island.

It is open to the public.

Guests listened to presentations by three expert speakers at the event, including Will Ulrich, the warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. He gave a presentation entitled Hurricane Season 2026: Focus on the Hazards.

Ulrich said that most of what Brevard County residents have seen in recent years have been strong tropical storms and near Category 1 hurricane winds. The larger, stronger storms have mostly passed by.

“Could you imagine what the community would need to go through if we had one of these large storms, and unfortunately there’s nothing protecting us from a Category 2, 3, 4 or a 5. Because we’ve seen these storms impact areas well to our north, so what makes us think that we’re going to be able to avoid these one day?,” said Ulrich to a crowd at the event.

“Now hopefully we do not see that in our collective lifetimes because you can imagine what that would do to our community as a whole. But understand that though we get these bigger storms less frequently, there’s absolutely nothing stopping us from getting one of them here.”

‘You Should Be Dancing’ — The Bee Gees

A 1976 disco hit suggested to actor John Travolta that he should be dancing. To his good fortune, he listened.

The Bee Gees began as a singing English family trio called the Rattlesnakes in 1958, when leader Barry Gibb was 12 and fraternal-twin brothers Maurice and Robin were 9.

The music-loving lads developed a harmony so seamless they could have been the Everly Brothers — that is, had Americans Don and Phil been a trio who sang with an English accent.

With no musical training, the British siblings, who never wanted a career other than singing and writing songs, formally became the Bee Gees (Brothers Gibb) in 1963 when they signed their first recording contract with a small-time English label.

In 1967, after the Beatles-led British Invasion had eased a bit in America but was still strong, the Bee Gees signed a contract with Atco, a subsidiary of New York powerhouse Atlantic Records. MainStreet Titusville aims to get downtown thriving again

Downtown Titusville was once a bustling place. Some recall it as the city’s heart and soul.

Its Main Street borders the downtown area on the north, Julia Street on the south, Indian River Avenue to its east and Hopkins Avenue to its west.

More people lived there, shopped there, dined in its restaurants and attended church. Guests vacationed in its hotels and attended plays at the Emma Parrish Theatre, now the Titusville Playhouse.

But with the advent of cars, shopping centers, supermarkets and e-shopping, many downtowns fell into decline. Titusville was among them.

Now the MainStreet Titusville program, a community based organization, aims to change that by unifying residents, business owners, and historians to preserve the city’s history and strengthen the local economy.

A four-point plan involves organization, design, promotion and economic vitality.

A previous Main Street effort disbanded; however, the new effort is moving forward.

Downtown Titusville and its small businesses are adding attractive amenities such as flowers and fresh paint. president. “We are putting together a vision for a program which includes bringing in events. We hope to have our first in September.”

Wyatt Kucera, an intern with the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce based downtown, said that the area remains the heart and soul of Titusville.

“It earned that name because it brought people together, giving them a sense of community,” he said. “That is still evident today during events such

as the Red, White and Boom parade on Independence Day and the Christmas parade. The sidewalks are packed with viewers.”

Two downtown museums, the American Space Museum and the North Brevard Historical Museum, contribute the knowledge they have gained to the sense of community.

Both host events and exhibit local artifacts.

Universal CityWalk

Universal CityWalk is a short day trip for family entertainment

Universal CityWalk, an open-air entertainment district at Universal Orlando, features a wide variety of shops, restaurants and nightlife options. And it’s a short drive from Melbourne.

A large Universal Studios store is stocked with exclusive merchandise, including Harry Potter, Super Nintendo World and Minions. The district even includes a 20-screen movie theater and an 18-hole miniature golf course. Many kiosks are located around the area selling a variety of items.

It is a place Nancy Jo Clough of Cocoa enjoys.

“Walking into Toothsome smells wonderful,” she said. Clough always stops at Voodoo Doughnut, gets her picture taken sitting in the big chair out front and goes inside for one of their delicious donuts.

The shop’s signature pink box can often be seen in guests’ arms as they exit CityWalk and head to their vehicles.

CityWalk is structured around a large, beautiful lagoon, with restaurants and shops circling the area.

CityWalk also offers a water taxi service to various Universal hotels.

Each taxi has its own dedicated route, so there are no extra stops at other hotels. A walking path is also available for those who prefer to get in their daily steps.

Couples celebrate America 250 in special marriage ceremonies

BY CHRIS BONANNO Local couples celebrated America’s sesquicentennial in style by saying “I do” as part of marriage ceremonies conducted by Brevard County Clerk of Court and Comptroller Rachel Sadoff at the Government Center in Titusville.

The ceremonies, July 8, were held at the center in a room filled with patriotic décor where couples exchanged vows and snapped photos of the occasion.

“I’m just absolutely thrilled that they will let me be a part of it,” Sadoff said.

“I mean, that’s the way I see it. It’s an honor.”

Among the couples who said “I do,” were Emily Beech and Luis Padilla of Melbourne.

“We wanted to get married and this seemed like a wonderful way to celebrate our love and then it’s also a love of our country as well,” Beech said.

Padilla also noted that he and Beech are both patriotic.

“I felt married to her for a while now, so it basically formalized my love for her,” he said.

Another couple who exchanged vows were Shawn Zerke Austin and Chris Austin of Palm Bay. “In the Catholic world, it’s also a feast day about marriage,” Zerke Austin said. “… It just all turns out to work out.”

Having the group marriage events on special occasions is not something new in Brevard County, with these events being held in Titusville or in other government offices in Melbourne and/or Viera depending on the occasion, according to Sadoff.

However, it was the first time such an event was held in conjunction with Independence Day, taking a cue from other events held throughout the state.

“Everybody does it a little differently,” Sadoff said. “Some do a marriage (ceremony) and they marry everybody at one time. Some do (for) individuals, so I think everybody does a little differently and what days they pick. To me, it’s a lot of fun and it

“The people we’ve seen come in today have certainly been very enthusiastic,” Bobanic said. “The first couple we had come in, she had a red, white and blue dress on. We made up some special bouquets and boutonnieres for the bride and groom, and the last couple that we had, they used them in their photos and videos.”

Other similar events will be held in the future with the next slated to be held to celebrate the release of the original “Star Trek” movie on Sept. 8.

Enjoy summer sun in moderation, take precaution against UV effects Key said people should know what their bodies can tolerate. She recommends using an umbrella on the beach. Spend some time in the shade, rather than being in the direct sun for a prolonged time. The sun is healthy, but too much can be harmful in short order. Avoid getting sunburned.

Whether it is enjoying the beach, surf fishing, bicycling or hiking the Linear Trail in Viera, he cherishes his time outdoors.

“I am out every chance I get,” said Laird, who lives in Suntree. “I am fishing, hunting, bicycling or walking the trails.”

Staying safe from the effects of the summer sun is always a concern, so Laird, like others, must take certain precautions to protect themselves.

Sunlight helps the body create vitamin D and improve health, but protecting the skin and eyes from UV damage is essential. It is recommended to combine methods of protection from the effects of too much sun. Among those methods are protective clothing, sunscreen, shade and hydration.

Laird said he does have some concerns about the effects of too much sun, but not enough to keep him from enjoying the outdoors.

“I wear a shirt that is 50 UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor),” he said. He also wears a hat, sunglasses and sometimes sunscreen.

“Do not go out into the sun during the hottest part of the day,” Key said.

“If you do, wear protective clothing.”

There are many brands of sunscreen and sunblock on the market, but Key said she prefers other forms of sun protection. She recommends Zinc oxide, which is used in mineral sunscreen.

Humane Society gala seeks to make change ‘fur good’

“Wicked Fur Good” — the 15th annual Tuxes and Tails Gala — is making its big return from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, August 22 at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral.

This year’s gala is themed after the popular musical, “Wicked,” which is an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz. The gala will shine a spotlight on the Brevard Humane Society’s lifesaving programs for animals, including shelter operations, medical care and second chances for pets in need.

of compassion, community and the belief that every animal deserves a second chance,” said Theresa Clifton, the executive director of Brevard Humane Society. “The support raised through this event allows us to continue providing shelter, medical care and hope to pets who need us most.”

Tables and sponsorships come with tickets, but individual tickets are available for $175 each. The event is presented by Subaru of Melbourne, sponsored by Phyllis C. Rice and Lynne Mountcastle and hosted

by Tom and Susie Wasdin and the Wasdin Family.

Last year, the gala raised $167,000.

Proceeds will go toward finishing the new Cocoa Intake and Adoption

Center at 1020 Cox Road in Cocoa, as well as funding various programs.

Mindy from Lite Rock 99.3 FM is returning to emcee the gala.

“She is a longtime animal supporter,” said Desiree Zink, the event coordinator. “We have a silent auction and this year we’re also having a Yellow Brick Road Treasure Trove — for $50, you get a chance to win mystery items.”

The auction will be led by Greg Pallone from Spectrum News 13.

Performers from Cirque It Events and the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse will provide plenty of live entertainment.

What’s behind the name?

The namesakes for Brevard County’s prominent landmarks?

A. Max Brewer Bridge Albert “Max” Brewer was a Titusville attorney in the 1950s and a State Representative from Brevard County.

In 1961, Gov. Cecil Farris Bryant appointed Brewer to the State Road Board.

In 1966, Brewer was killed when his private plane crashed, according to research done by the North Brevard Historical Society.

The 3,200-foot high level A. Max Brewer Bridge over the Indian River was named in his honor.

First parishioners at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church came by boat

BY LINDA JUMP Holy Trinity Episcopal Church’s 1886 chapel still welcomes prayers in two weekly services. It was originally on the south bank of Crane Creek, on land purchased by freed slave and early Melbourne settler Wright Brothers.

“The church has always been involved in the community. It was instrumental in creating an early hospital and Trinity Towers (affordable apartments for seniors), and its quest is to be both evangelical and liturgical,” said Rev. Robert Bruckart, the associate priest. He said generations have kept the church active “so it wouldn’t go into obscurity.”

Beth McMullen, 77, regularly attends the Wednesday healing service using the Book of Common Prayer Rite I held at 10 a.m. in the historic site, now renovated at 50 W. Strawbridge Ave. “I went here as a kid when it was on U.S. 1 and Fee Avenue, and I was married here,” she said. “It was such a peaceful, joyful time. It’s great that they kept this building original,” she said.

The Rev. Daniel McCarley, the resident associate rector, said Holy Trinity holds four services weekly, and he most enjoys the Sunday 7:30 a.m. Book of Common Prayer Rite 1 service and the mid-week healing service in the chapel.

“This building is more organic and informal and brings that old style back. It feels more family-centered and is not as overwhelming as going to the main church with 1,000 people,” he said.

by boat. Later, a footbridge was added, but the church was moved in 1897 to the north side where the population grew.

In 1923, a bell and belfry were donated by Jessie S. Goode, prior to a renovation with a pipe organ and an addition with cream stucco four years later. In 1963, the church settled at its current site on the campus, with an expansive front porch.

The main church building and chapel are part of the Diocese of Central Florida.

In 1958, the parochial school began, later called Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, and now includes preschool through grade 12. The church has a thrift store and several small groups.

Always check on seniors living alone without family nearby

BY LINDA JUMP One in four seniors in Florida over the age 60 live alone without family nearby. For many, their biggest fear is dying and not being missed or discovered for days.

“It’s sad when someone is old or disabled who lives alone and doesn’t have people to check on them,” said Erin Harvey, the developmental and donor director for Aging Matters in Brevard.

She said the organization’s Meals on Wheels program provides at least a weekday check for those receiving the meals. “There is no current funding for Saturday or Sundays,” she said.

While there is a waiting list and no income requirements, she said, new requests with an intake form are graded by a case manager, based

on responses such as living alone without a caregiver, accessibility to transportation and medical condition.

Some seniors who live alone have scheduled in-home care, but the majority of Brevard seniors living alone have no consistent visitor to check on their well-being.

2-1-1 Brevard Sunshine Service lost funding for a program of

ongoing well-check calls to seniors living alone, but continues its 24-7 phone hotline at 2-1-1 for both a crisis line and non-emergency information and referral services.

Cpl. Carlos Diaz of the community services unit of the Brevard Sheriff’s Office said the department offers well-being checks for not only family members, but also neighbors or friends concerned about someone they haven’t heard from.

“Those living alone should keep a charged phone within arm’s reach and develop a friend system with someone they trust to check on each other,” he said.

Medical alert systems abound for those alone, he said. For a fee ranging between $120 to $150 plus annually, some private services provide daily check-in calls. Some

systems are wearable, while others are home-based devices that connect clients either to a live trained responder at the push of a button.

Other non-monitored systems alert a named contact or call 911.

Global positioning systems can detect falls and alert help.

Smart medical devices provide two-way audio, voice activation or smart phone integration.

Most police agencies or fire departments can also be contacted on non-emergency lines to report a senior suspected to be dead in their home, ill or hurt but unable to call for help.

You regularly check your cholesterol, why not your brain?

“There’s really nothing you can do to check your brain health.” — I still hear this fairly frequently when out in the community discussing brain and memory health.

The importance of early detection and intervention is widely known for conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, but many individuals still think there is nothing that can be done for your brain. The good news — you can check your brain.

The first thing I tell everyone about changes in their or their loved one’s memory or cognition is to: 1. Speak with their doctor about these changes 2. Get a free baseline memory screening Why should you talk to your doctor? Believe it or not, there are several things that are not an Alzheimer’s disease pathology that can cause changes in your cognition.

Urinary tract infections (or UTI’s) in older individuals often do not present the same as they do in younger individuals. Commonly known UTI warning signs include

urgency, frequency, burning, pain, and urine changes. However, for many older adults, UTIs can manifest cognitive and/or behavioral changes, including personality changes, mood swings, irrational decisions, hallucinations, delusions, even paranoia. This delirium can occur within days, or even hours — and is treated with antibiotics.

Other pseudodementias (a clinical condition that can cause cognitive deficits not caused by progressive neurodegenerative disease processes like Alzheimer’s disease) include vitamin deficiencies, dehydration, medication (and supplement) interactions, untreated thyroid conditions or poor sleep. Believe it or not, depression can also be considered pseudodementia.

Why get a memory screening?

There are several organizations in various locations across Brevard County that offer free confidential baseline memory screenings (which are typically a little more complex than the standard.

Take, for example, the “I’m-goingto-give-you-three-words” memory

test you get during your annual doctor’s visit. While these memory screenings are not diagnostic (you’re not going to walk out with any kind of diagnosis), they are a non-invasive tool to help determine if your memory is functioning where you should be, or if you should investigate a little further.

You can contact the Health First Memory Disorder Clinic at 321434-7614 for locations offering free memory screenings closest to you.

Additionally, you can join Alzheimer’s/Dementia-related research studies offered here in Brevard. They often offer a small participation stipend, as well as provide access to testing that would otherwise be incredibly expensive (if not unavailable) to obtain (such as PET scans). Still not sure if you should get a memory screening? You can look at the Alzheimer’s Association’s 10

warning signs below: 1. Memory changes that disrupt daily life 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks 4. Confusion with time or place 5. Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps 8. Reading good books is a great summertime activity for seniors. We have favorite authors or we check out new writers for variety. What’s your favorite story? Everyone has a story.

In the New York Times best seller “Theo of Golden,” by Allen Levi, it carries the reader through an adventure of learning the stories of 92 people triggered by framed pencil portraits hanging in a coffee shop.

Check it out! We tell stories with our words, but more often with our facial expressions and body language.

Artworks are often forms of storytelling. When I was a docent at the Foosaner Art Museum, I would ask the visitors “What do you see?” or “What story is being told?” Each of us may see a different story.

When my wife of 58 years died, I painted a park scene with an old man sitting on a park bench feeding pigeons. The painting entitled “Shades of Gray” was exhibited in the Strawbridge Gallery in downtown Melbourne. Periodically, I would sit there and listen to the visitor comments. Each saw a different story.

This monthly column is a story about a particular topic that challenges the senior population. We see ourselves in what has been written.

We think about what has happened and what could happen. We remember our family members who have gone before us or who are part of our lives.

They all have stories. There are many challenges.

When you meet someone for the first time, after the small talk, ask open-ended questions. Find out their story. “What’s your claim to fame?”
