Using the platform for good BY LILLIAN NGUYEN Mrs. Brevard County Florida, Colleen Jamieson of Palm Bay, and Mrs. Viera, Ciara Candle, used their appearance at the Viera Voice/Senior Life Hurricane Prep Rally to champion social issues. Jamieson is using her platform to bring awareness to pediatric illness. “I work with a lot of children who are battling cancer,” said Jamieson, who was crowned the first Mrs. Brevard County by the Brevard Regional Pageant. “Out of the federal funding, there’s only 4% that goes to pediatric cancer.”

Jamieson and Candle represented the Brevard Regional Pageant at the Hurricane Prep Rally & Senior Fair on July 17. The two promoted service, leadership and meaningful community impact. Candle handed out hurricane preparedness checklists to the more than 1,000 seniors at the Hurricane Prep Rally. “There were a lot of people— I was so surprised!” Jamieson said. After meeting with local leaders and community members, Jamieson and Candle also met Elaine Terranova, who in 2008 was crowned Ms. Florida Senior. SL

The Viera Voice/Senior Life Hurricane Prep Rally brought out hundreds of area residents to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community eager to prepare for storms. The second annual Hurricane Prep Rally held July 17 included a host of community partners and exhibitors who shared valuable information on important storm-related topics such as emergency responses, poststorm planning, what to do with pets and shelters among many other topics. An example of the important

information that could be found at the event came from Health First, which was the presenting sponsor of the event. There, representatives from the company informed residents about how they could take care of medication needs. “When the governor issues a state of emergency, the fact that they can refill their prescriptions early,” said Jose Hernandez, the pharmacy manager with Health First, “All the restrictions are lifted so they can get their
