Legendary Highwaymen status looms larger than their art

FEATURES

By Linda Wiggins

Robert “R.L.” Lewis, Jr. of Cocoa is among the 26 Highwaymen artists inducted in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004 for the unique Florida landscape paintings dating back to the 1960s. Once looked down upon during segregation in the South, the works of the AfricanAmerican artists have become the darlings of the art world across the country and the globe. While his paintings command top dollar, and while his live, in-person 14_Layout 1 12/16/13 2:44 PM Page 1 painting exhibitions draw growing, over-capacity crowds, one side result of the growing fuss leaves Lewis increasingly puzzled. Helen LaPointe

The Senior Life 2014 Caregiver of the Year Award goes to …

A

s recipients of the Senior Life Caregiver of the Year Award in previous years, Jim Buffington and Maria Velasquez of Health First Center for Family Caregivers know first hand why this year’s selection is an excellent, well-deserved choice. They had the honor of presenting the 2014 award to a caregiver named Helen LaPointe, who for many years has been the primary caregiver for her lifelong friend who has no close relatives living in the area. LaPointe has been by her friend’s side since their early carefree days as young women who loved harmonizing with a chorus and sharing many other interests in life. However, LaPointe’s friendship was put to the test as her role transitioned into a more difficult, unexpected one: caregiver for her friend following a diagnosis of dementia. LaPointe welcomed this opportunity to help the friend who had given her so much joy in life. When her friend could no longer live by herself and was placed in a nursing home, LaPointe became a frequent visitor, always making sure her friend was in good care, in good spirits and didn’t feel alone or afraid. LaPointe was selected as this year’s Caregiver of the Year because she

consistently shows, without a doubt, that no adversity in her life can keep her from “being there” for the lifelong friend she loves. Recently, when her car was stolen, her main concern immediately turned to, “How am I going to be able to visit my friend without my car?” She is a role model for all who know her. Her support-group friends at the Center for Family Caregivers admire her spirit, enthusiasm, positive attitude, and fabulous sense of humor, as well as her deep commitment to her friend. In her presentation to LaPointe on Jan. 18, Velasquez said, “It is one thing to take on the role of a caregiver for our spouse or a parent, but to be a caregiver for a friend is truly honorable. Helen, your actions exemplify the true definition of a friend. A friend loves at all times, no matter the circumstance. You are my HERO!” Velasquez said this year’s recipient of the Senior Life Caregiver of the Year Award teaches all of us that “the quality of life for a person suffering from a chronic illness depends on the presence of a very caring individual, which this extraordinary caregiver is. “And by the way she’s only 92!”

The 2014 Senior Life Caregiver of the Year is Helen LaPointe, center, with Maria Velasquez, left, the 2013 Caregiver of the Year, and Jim Buffington, right, the 2012 recipient.

Now, you can follow me to Florida!” Naturally, he did. SL

Ann Pitt’s summers with her grandparents in Rocky Mount, N.C., intensified once she met Wilson Pitt, who shares her Aug. 14 birthday. She was 11 and he was 12. They wrote during the school year and dated others, whom they forgot each summer. Her grandparents’ house had a big front porch with a swing that grew in significance as the youngsters sat there before Wilson’s morning paper route and after supper each evening. It is where they shared their first real kiss. After Ann’s grandmother passed away, they asked for the porch swing, which moved with them and is now at a daughter’s house. Wilson graduated from high school in 1957 and received a Naval ROTC scholarship to the University of South Carolina. Ann graduated the following year and attended Columbia College. Boomer’s bucket list is one short

Come Feb.1 the poodle skirt, a symbol of the 1950s Americana style and flare, will hit the Space Coast as the annual Boomer Senior Expo kicks off. Guests, stepping into The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville will feel as if they’ve traveled back to the days of “Grease,” “Happy Days” or simply their teenage years. The museum will transform into a 1950s bash where poodle skits will be as abundant as they were in the days when they first adorned the waists of school girls. To fully understand what was considered one of the most iconic fashion pieces of the decade is to first understand its history. The skirt was introduced in 1947 after Juli Lynne Charlot, a young actress and designer, created the stylish bottom at home. She cut a hole in the middle of a large circle of of felt — an excess of fabric that was not popular during World War II or the Great Depression — large enough for her waist, the skirt reaching just below the knee. She wore it to a holiday party in Los Angeles. As time moved forward, so did the skirt. It was first made in bright girly colors, like pink with crinoline, a stiff fabric underneath to support and shape the piece.

Boomer Guide models: ambassadors for The Good Life

You simply have to meet them. The models that grace the pages of the 2014 Boomer Guide are not only stylish and vibrant no matter what their age, but their attraction is also an inside job. If I were to give them a common denominator, I’d say they live their lives now, not waiting until they lose enough weight, save enough money or have enough time. I think I’ll join them —not only at the Senior Safari on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Brevard Zoo—but in their mission to enjoy The Good Life this very moment, every day. Also on our pages this month are the wonderful love stories of a number of couples who, like our models, share life’s lived lessons to inspire us all. While our models are living their best life, our chosen couples are living their best love. Happy Valentine’s Day! Jill Blue-Gaines jill@myseniorlife.com

FEBRUARY 2014

I was finally able to read your article, Ed, about being youthful as we age and find it to be very timely as we each celebrate a new birthday. Because I was a kindergarten teacher, I have always encouraged play-based learning and live my personal life with the intention of “never growing up.” For me, being young is a lot about thoughts, attitude, continual learning and reaching out to try new things. Since two of my grown children and a grown granddaughter were with me this weekend, I asked them if they perceive me as “old” or “young.” They felt I emulated a youthful mom/grandma because of my physical activity, high energy level, extreme tolerance, open-mindedness and ability to keep up with technological and generational trends. Their responses were encouraging for me. I also believe that associating with younger people gives you energy and inspiration. I enjoy the company of many young friends. My greatest compliment came from my French son-in-law who one time said to me, “I chose to marry your daughter because I want to see her age in such a youthful manner as you have.” Yes, those French men have a way with words. Happy wintering to all of you and thanks again, Ed, for keeping in touch and encouraging us to ponder your thoughts. —Carol, Wisconsin

Boomer Guide models go wild at Senior Safari zoo expo “Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have not called yet, but when they do, I’m ready.”

By Linda Wiggins Deborah Mazany had always dreamed of being a model, even as a little girl. It’s not that she wasn’t pretty enough, or slender enough, but somehow the years slipped by while she was waiting for just the right time and circumstance to do what she really, really wanted to do in her heart of hearts, dream of dreams. When she heard that Brevard’s annual Boomer Guide was looking for models to splash across its glossy, award-winning pages, she talked about it with a friend and all of a sudden, “it just went ‘click.’ ” The way-still gorgeous 51-year-old wasn’t waiting for anything anymore. Nearly 25 models answered the call and will find out at the Friday, Feb. 7 Senior Safari 2014 Boomer Guide Expo and Wellness Walkabout at the Brevard Zoo which one of them made the cover shot. Iconic covers of models channeling Rosie the Riveter and Marilyn Monroe from past retro expo themes the past two years have won first place for best cover photo from the North American Mature Publishers Association. Models will be on hand to greet their fans from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and officially recognized at 12:30 p.m. “This has given me a lot of confidence. I am definitely through waiting for anything and I am going to pursue my modeling career,” Mazany said. Current and past Boomer Guide models have done just that, including going to work for major companies that advertise in the magazine and in sister newspapers Senior Life and Viera Voice, which are also published by expo juggernaut Bluewater Creative Group. For Linda G. Jones, appearing in the Boomer Guide pages finally means that when people frequently ask her if she is a model, she can finally tell them ‘yes.” “Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have not called yet, but when they do, I’m ready,” Jones said. The next step for her is an invitation to audition for Burt Reynolds, who teaches acting classes twice a week in Jupiter and Stuart. While Mazany is the youngest

Bench a fitting resting place for volunteer who never slowed down By Rosemary H. Lynn Arthur Murray was a gentleman who loved to help his fellow man. At the age of 88, he was still volunteering via Joe’s Place to help with Alzheimer’s patients in their homes. He would relieve the regular caretakers so they could take a break during the day. He enjoyed spending his time this way. As Murray said back in January 2012, “Being Idle is terrible. There is a need to fulfill a purpose in life.” The Senior Life newspaper article brought attention to Murray as a way to get other seniors in the area to become involved in volunteer opportunities in Brevard County. Everywhere he went, he brought humor and a humble but vocal opinion about how seniors are needed to help one another in all walks of life. Murray spent time talking to the

ION SULTAT N O C E FRE

WE PUT OUR

caregivers almost as much as he did with the people he watched over. They enjoyed his insightful input and intelligence. Most of the caretakers for the patients are family members and need to have some time to themselves on a regular basis. Murray was someone who understood how burdensome it could be to watch over a loved one who was deteriorating rapidly. He was more than happy to help with that burden when he could. A loving partner to the love of his life, Eileen McMullen; a gentle and loving father to his two daughters, Trish Murray and Diane Dingman; and grandfather to a younger generation who adored him, Murray passed away on June 27 at 89 from congestive heart failure. Those he cared for and helped miss him terribly, but now they have a place they can go to pay their respects to this man who holds a special place in their hearts and minds. On Dec. 28, McMullen, along with Murray’s family, dedicated an engraved bench in his honor under a tree at Gleason Park in Indian Harbour Beach. “We wanted to do something special

Musical prodigy’s keyboard puts teens in the air By linda Wiggins At age 4, most children are still into finger painting, mastering new words, and tackling the tough “L,” “R” and “Th” sounds. Preschooler Angelia Mauldin started piano lessons. Soon, the prodigy had no choice but to continue. “My teacher wouldn’t let me quit. My parents wouldn’t let me quit. My brother and sister were allowed to, but not me,” said the pianist, singer and recording artist who lives in Indialantic overlooking the ocean. Her fans now know her simply as Angelia (an-GEE-la). A baby boomer whose children have all left the nest, Angelia now focuses her attention on “the 30 new children” she has with her husband, pilot and businessman Dwight Bell. Their nonprofit Wings of Grace Ministries gives teens age 13 to 19 the golden opportunity to earn a pilot’s license despite their family’s inability to cover the otherwise $8,000 minimum cost. They hope her annual “Angelia

and Friends” Valentine’s Day show planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at the King Center’s Studio Theater simultaneously will bring down the house and put students in the air. At $15 apiece, 200 tickets can pay for 30 hours of very expensive, fuel-intense air time. Each student is required to put in a minimum of 40 hours of flight time to obtain the license, in addition to all the book learning, class time and flight simulation that the ministry also provides at no charge. “These are some of the most critical years for young people. They really begin to make important life decisions,” Angelia said. “Our goal is, of course, for them to qualify for the solid, life-changing career that a pilot’s license offers, but more importantly, this aeronautical curriculum teaches decision-making principles that can help them make life-saving choices in the face of peer pressure. The SENIOR LIFE photo curriculum is character building because Boomer Angelia Bell hopes both to bring down the house and put teens in the air it is based on biblical principles.” at her 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 benefit concert at the King Center Studio Theatre. Highwaymen continued from page 1 The fascination of an in-person glimpse of his father is not lost on him either. “Hey, that just about wasn’t the case, we almost lost him. He made a decision to get healthy and come off all his medications, so I’ve been taking him to the gym every day, and he’s done it,” Lewis III said. “That is so wonderful, because we want to keep our national treasure around for a long time to come.” The line won’t end with Lewis III. One day, 11-year-old R.L. Lewis IV will pick up the paint-brush baton. Couples share reasons why they’d say ‘I do’ all over again By linda Wiggins At the Friday, Feb. 7 Senior Safari 2014 Boomer Guide Expo & Wellness Walkabout at the Brevard Zoo, couples will get a chance to say “I do, at the Zoo,” all over again at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They will renew their marriage vows in a unique and wild setting just in time for Valentine’s Day. A few long-married local couples shared their secrets to love’s longevity, to which they would happily say “I do” all over again. Cherchez la femme Robert Moeller might not have been Coilla’s husband of 70 years come Sept. 12. He first dated her sister, but picked the younger Coilla, while her sister became engaged to another beau. All’s well that ends well. So what is their secret to a happy marriage after all these years? “Who said it’s happy?” Coilla said with her trademark humor. “In all seriousness, we listen to each other. And when he doesn’t want to hear any more, he just turns his hearing aid off.” Bob chimed in without missing a beat. “None of that cold shoulder that some couples do, ignoring each another for days to make a point. That’s very bad for a marriage.” The pair lived across the street from each another in Omaha, Neb., first courting when Coilla was 14, then marrying when she was 18. Bob left for the service shortly afterward, and took the advice from his commanding officer and “dumped all the household and financial duties in her lap.” “It was the best thing I could have done. She ran the house and raised the kids while I flew all over the world. We were total partners in my career.” Bob retired as a brigadier general in 1974, his career focusing on cloud sampling and atomics surveillance, functions that have since expanded and relocated to the AFTAC building at Patrick Air Force Base. Both partners in derring-do have a pilot’s license. “We’ve had a wonderful life, traveling, flying, boating, golfing,” Coilla said. Are they each other’s best friend? “Well,” Bob said, “I’d say a little more than that.” They’ve still got it If the fears of 18-year-old Bob Willeke’s parents had ever materialized, there’s no way Esther would have “been his honey” for 69 years. The setting was World War II. Bob was working a crane high in the air of a scrap yard forging steel for the war effort. Far below him she strolled, coming in to do her Rosie the Riveter stint so the men folk could go to war. With one look, that, as they say, was that. Forget that she was the “older woman” by six years, divorced with two kids, and that these details in those times were quite set against convention. If she would have him, he was hers. Bob trained Esther for his job, married her, went off to battle, adopted her two little girls from their disinterested, uninvolved bio-dad, raised them as his own along with their two brothers to follow, and continued to look for new ways each day to please Esther. She has done the same.

The formula seems to have worked. “We’ve had a really happy marriage,” Bob said, locking eyes and hands with Esther in the tidy sixth-floor Asbury Arms apartment that they love because “wherever we go, our home is where the other is.” “We’ve been very blessed, and we’ve served God all our lives.” Like the Moellers, the Willekes took a certain Bible scripture from Ephesians to heart and vowed never to let the sun go down on their anger. They settle disagreements before bedtime, even if it is to agree to disagree. “Young people get into trouble because day after day they stay mad at each other, and before you know it, they are talking divorce,” Bob said. Also, the couple has made a habit of finding a church wherever they move and becoming active in it, and Asbury Arms is no exception, except that church services now come to them. Esther said it is important for a joyful life to continue to seek God and help

others, despite that she “is blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other.” “If God can use me this way, I’m all for it.” Sorrows halved, joys shared Barbara and Ken Moore are finally getting to enjoy life more fully now that she has retired from her busy job of 40 years as founding executive director of the Child Care Association of Brevard. She was perhaps the most influential nonprofit executive in the county. Wrapping up a busy career at Kennedy Space Center, Ken is just about there, too. Now, they put even more time and energy into their church, their grandchildren, and, as always, their marriage. “It’s wonderful to be able to do all the things I want to do in my church, and it is something we love to do together,” Barbara said of their historic Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Cocoa. in a pew before him, favoring teaching ministries. The church, as well as their marriage, was a comfort through the tragic loss of their son, Kent, murdered several years ago while harboring and protecting a victim of domestic violence. Kent’s three children and those of his brother, Kendall, are frequent fixtures in their grandparents’ home. As she did while raising her children, and their friends and other children of the neighborhood, Barbara spends time with all five of them at her knee, teaching them good character traits, Biblical lessons and just plain having fun. “We lean not unto our own understanding, but we lean on the Lord,” Barbara said, “and we definitely lean on each other.” To register to renew vows or for more information about “I Do at the Zoo” and other activities of the Senior Safari 2014 Boomer Guide Expo & Wellness Walkabout, call 321-242-1235. OUR columnists Mission San Luis, Tallahassee

There are many excellent educational sites to see in our state capital of Tallahassee, my favorite and one I highly recommend you tour on your visit is the Mission San Luis. Mission San Luis de Apalachee was a Spanish Franciscan mission built in 1633 in the Florida Panhandle, two miles west of the present-day Florida Capitol building. The mission was part of Spain’s effort to colonize the region and convert the Indians to Christianity. The mission lasted until 1704, when it was evacuated and destroyed to prevent its use by an approaching militia of Creek Indians and South Carolinians. Today the Mission is reconstructed on its original site and brings the past to life with guides in period dress introducing you to colonial buildings, exhibits and archaeology. The buildings that have since been reconstructed include the Church, the Convento, the Council House, the Chief’s House, the fort and blockhouse, and a typical Spanish house as well as many interesting features around the site. The brand new visitor center has a beautiful lobby, and a 125-seat theater where you’ll view an informative introductory film on the Mission. The site is located on 63 beautiful acres. Our recent visit to the Mission transported us back in time to a 17thcentury community where Apalachee Indians and Spaniards are drawn together by religion as well as military and economic issues. This outstanding Mission is Florida’s Apalachee —

Touring the Town John Trieste

Spanish Living History Museum. A rewarding site for the entire family to enjoy. The Mission is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except Mondays. It is closed holidays. There is a very modest admission charge. Mission San Luis is located at 2100 West Tennessee St. in Tallahassee. For information, call 850-245-6406 Tallahassee should be at least a twoor three-night visit. There is a lot to see and do. Traveling to our state capital by auto is very easy from Brevard. Take Route 528 west to exit 4. This is the Florida Turnpike entrance. Then take Turnpike north to Route I-75. North on I-75 to I-10 West. I-10 West to Tallahassee. With stops along the way, it is a pleasant seven- to eight-hour drive. To access Trieste’s more than 100 previously published travel articles, go to myseniorlife.com. All destinations are planned for the entire family’s enjoyment and intended to be easy on the budget, possibly educational and definitely memorable. SL

Associations, agents: a good team Real estate agents and associations of any kind can be a great asset to each other. Whether you live in a condo, HOA, mobile home, co-op, etc., you probably purchased through a real estate agent. I always enjoy receiving phone calls from real estate agents asking questions. It means the seller is working with a professional, proactive agent. The calls inquire about association rules, amenities and restrictions. Some examples of questions are — “Is your association an over-55 community?” “Are pickup trucks allowed?” “Is board approval required?” “How do we get access to the clubhouse?” Over the years, I have heard Community Association Managers say they think real estate agents are the bane of their life. It’s important for both parties to realize they are in the same business. Cooperating with each other results in better new owners and content real estate agents. Sometimes, a new owner will say to me “Well, the real estate agent told me….” This is often because a new owner is unaware of covenants or rules. While the new owner has a responsibility to be an informed buyer, it’s much better when a real

12

estate agent explains the obligations of the respective association. One of the most frequent issues I hear from community association managers are last minute requests for estoppel letters and copies of association documents. Normally, the closing date is set allowing plenty of time for all parties to do their homework. At the same time, associations need to be prepared to release accurate information in a timely fashion. Associations and real estate agents, working together as a team, results in happier agents and informed quality association owners. SL It’s important to point out that Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his community association manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com.

Valentine’s Day From an early age, we have learned about the value of love, lost love, and all the nuances connected with its cultivation. Each year, we are reminded about the emotion of love with the observance of Valentine’s Day. It is not a recent commercial invention designed to sell greeting cards, flowers and candy. There were festivals dealing with love and fertility prior to Roman times. When Roman emperor Claudius II observed the problem of love-sick troops, he banned marriage for his young soldiers. A Christian priest Valentine went against the ban and married couples. An exchange of messages expressing love between the married partners (later known as valentines) was traced to Valentine. He was executed for his act of supporting love and marriage on Feb. 14, 269. Throughout our lives, we face the challenge of observing Valentine’s Day. As grade-school children, we wanted to exchange cards with only special friends. Our mother told us to be kind to all of our classmates. We put our cards for everyone in the box on the teacher’s desk. We “loved” everyone. In our teen years, we became more selective and asked a “special” person to be “My Valentine.” There is the chemical reaction in our brain. We encountered love, added new challenges as we faced romantic love, physical and mental images, our sex drive, and a deep sense of attachment through marriage and family. Each year, there is the challenge of remembering the special day with a greeting card that says the right

Challenges of Living to Age 100 Ed Baranowski words. Flowers (red roses), chocolate, and jewelry are added to the mix. What is enough? When faced with financial challenges, a handmade card or message on paper may have to do. Songs of love fill the air and remind us of times long ago. Poems copied from others or our own compositions show our love even when they begin: “Roses are red, violets are blue….I love you.” Letters from war zones are challenges. Funny thing is… When my kids were small, I kept hearing about this phenomenon called “The Mother’s Curse” which I thought was only folklore, until now. What is “The Mother’s Curse?” It is what almost all mothers say sometime during the raising of their children. The curse sounds like this: “I hope someday you have children that act just like you.” So now our daughter has her own daughter and I’m getting to see the curse in action. Oh yes, my granddaughter is a miniversion of the terror we raised about two decades earlier. When I see her playing with her new doll so preciously, then all of a sudden rip the limbs off, then start wailing because her new doll is broken, well I go through the entire gamut of emotions. At first I feel sorry for her, then I feel mad at her for breaking her new toy. Then when I see her mother’s (my daughter’s) look of disbelief because the brand new $20-plus toy is ruined, well, I break out into total, uncontrollable laughter. It’s hilarious. “WOW, she is just like you,” I exclaim as I’m rolling over with

side-splitting laughter at my redfaced, mystified daughter. “The Mother’s Curse” has kicked in and it’s just too funny to ignore. Oh, we got constant lectures from her after she hit puberty about how she was going to raise her kids differently and they’ll be perfect. Well, I’m watching her version of perfection and it looks very familiar and I think I’m going to need oxygen before I pass out from laughing. She went from adorable innocence, to know-it-all teenager, to computerage cyber-based parenting expert, to “Mom can you help me with this monster.” But the most gratifying part is as she’s attempting to load the kids in their car seats and I hear the words: “I hope someday you have children.” SL

A musical afternoon tea to benefit local women scholars will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22 at First United Methodist Church of Melbourne, 110 E. New Haven Ave. “So La Tea” is being sponsored by Chapter GW of the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO), the program will feature a performance by the Platinum Coast Chorus Sweet Adelines. The cost of the tea is $15, $10 ages 10 and under. Proceeds from the 2013 tea netted about $2,500. The event will be entertaining, and the sweet and savory food and company will be great, but it’s future students of higher education who benefit most, said chapter member Claire Gibbs. “We have social components but our primary purpose is raising money to support women in their education,’’ she said. Chapter GW has been serving South Brevard for 25 years, she said. “It’s for women of all age ranges. Education is what we support but you don’t need to be a college graduate or related to a PEO, you don’t have to be anything. Membership is by invitation but it’s generally extended after we get to know someone and she’s interested and willing to committ to the ideas of the sisterhood,’’ said Gibbs. In Brevard County there are

eight chapters and each have a different way of raising money. Annual dues ranging from $40 to $60 set by local chapters. Scholarships range from a $1,000 to $15,000 and there also is a loan program, she said. Founded on Jan. 21, 1869, by students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, PEO has grown to nearly a quarter of a million members. There are about 300 members in Brevard County and 240,000 in the U.S. and Canada. The scholarships often

go to promising high school students entering college but not always, Gibbs said. “Our current scholarship and grant recipients in Brevard include two Ph.D. candidates at F.I.T. who are receiving fellowships and Habitat for Humanity homeowner who is completing her LPN degree,’’ she said. Tickets must be purchased in advance. For more information, call 321-727-2976 or 321-729-0707. SL

Senior Life Grandparents rock relationship skills for Valentine’s Day

Monthly support meetings for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

By Linda Wiggins

Charlie Long walked through the living room of his Titusville home and stopped to pick up a note. He smiled beet red and looked up to spot the culprit who left it for him. It was his wife, Donna, to whom he will have been married 45 years in September. Their date this Valentine’s Day promises to be no less important than their first, she as a doe-eyed teen at once attracted by — but wary of — the fellow Seminole High School junior’s cocky attitude. Donna Long said she hopes to pass along the secrets to a great relationship down the generations. “One of the most important things we can teach and model for our grandchildren is that you never stop dating, you never stop flirting,” said Long, whose seven grandchildren are the butter on her bread. But “good relationship” means more than just with a significant other, she said. “I want to teach them how important quality time is with family and friends, and that strong, loving relationships are our greatest treasures on Earth,” Long said, pausing to reflect on the difference between today and “back in the day.” “Today with text messaging it is easy to sit in silence with the one you are with while talking to others. When we are together, I ask for all electronics to be put away so I can look at their beautiful faces and have some quality time together.” In the Long household, character counts, and while good behavior is exalted, bad behavior is not necessarily a life sentence. “I strive to teach them that when they make a mistake in judgment

or deed, that it is wise to admit it and then START OVER,” Long said. “I give them the example that every night the sun goes down and in the morning the sun comes up. Each day is a new beginning.” The importance placed on good relationship skills goes outside the four walls of the home. Donna Long is the founder and president of Women Reaching Women, a nonprofit that supports military families, primarily the wives and children of men currently or formerly in the service, but also the military women as well. “Veterans have it especially hard when one has been deployed. Both partners have to readjust to their parental roles and step up their communication with one another as to what responsibilities as a parent

Dear Gramma

Dear Gramma: My grampa has diabetes and takes pills for it. He is supposed to maintain a strict diet and exercise. He takes a walk each morning which is good. However, someone told me they saw Grampa at the donut shop one day when he was supposed to be on his walk. He also hides sweets around the house. I’m worried about him. Oldest Grandson Dear Oldest: Noncompliance to a diabetic regimen can be dangerous. Some questions need to be answered: Does grampa check his blood sugar and are the results within normal limits? How is his overall physical and mental health? Is his physician aware of his noncompliance? While complicated, diabetes can be managed. However, we cannot force someone to do what’s good for their own health. Grampa’s doctor should be made aware of this situation so he can tell him again what he needs to do to stay healthy. Holly Fox Vellekoop, MSN, is the Brevard author of “How to Help When Parents Grieve” and “Justice and Revenge.” A retired Penn State University clinical instructor with six grandchildren, Vellekoop has a master of science degree in nursing. will work for them individually and for their children,” she said. This task is beyond challenging when the deployed spouse returns home “changed” by the horrors of battle. In these cases, her organization links families with free, confidential counseling services by militaryexperienced experts, especially marriage and relationship counseling. The Long household has not escaped its own share of heartaches. Long teaches her grandchildren that coping through adversity, not the absence of adversity, is the path to joy. “Even today we are working through some serious situations. A painting my oldest daughter made for me sums it up nicely: “Our family is a circle of love and strength ... with every birth and every union, the circle grows. Every joy shared adds more love. Every crisis faced together makes the circle stronger.” SL

World War II veteran remarries after blind date By Rae Botsford

It was tax season when Mel Rappleyea, Sr. met his new wife. The 86-year-old widower and World War II veteran married 77-year-old Gayetta Blake on Jan. 18, less than a year after their initial introduction. “She came to H&R Block to get her taxes done last year at the office where I worked,” Rappleyea said. She was his manager’s client, and it was he who saw the potential for romance and arranged a blind date. Rappleyea called her, and Blake later told her daughter, “I could tell by his voice that I could trust him.” As it turned out, they had a lot in common. Both were committed to Christianity. Both were unusually healthy for their ages, and still

working. Each of them had been widowed for several years after long marriages. They found they had the same morals and even similar diets. Neither one of them was particularly looking to get remarried, yet neither had written off the possibility. “The most uniting thing about us is that we both have a passion for helping other people,” Rappleyea said. Blake serves others as a waitress, and for Rappleyea, that passion is what started him in tax preparation. He also participates in an international organization that places Bibles. Now that they have married, they both plan to spend more time working with that organization. On Jan. 18, they had the biggest wedding they could sensibly afford at her church on Merritt Island.

Mel Rappleyea, an 86-year-old widower and World War II veteran, married 77-year-old Gayetta Blake on Jan. 18 at the Merritt Island River of Life Church. “When she got married the first time, as a teenager, she eloped,” Rappleyea said. “That marriage didn’t work. Later she married the man she was married to for 43 years, and they got married in the study of a pastor, just with him and his wife. I told her that I felt she deserved to have a real wedding. She’d never had one.” The newlyweds have elected to move into his house. They haven’t decided whether either of them will retire, but Rappleyea is grateful he has the ability to work and do as much as he does at his age. “Just been blessed, I guess.” SL

Voting begins in contest to name meerkats at Brevard Zoo Special to Viera Voice

It is an exciting year for Brevard Zoo as it celebrates its 20th birthday. In honor of this major milestone, the zoo is opening a new exhibit featuring meerkats on March 15. The zoo is asking the public to help name the alpha male and female meerkats. Visit the Brevard Zoo Facebook fan page to see the suggested names in the comment box under the photo album of the alpha male and female. This list will be sent to PNC Bank, which is the title sponsor for the meerkat exhibit. PNC staff members will choose their top five names for the male and female. Individuals are encouraged to visit any of the 15 PNC Bank branches in Brevard County and cast a ballot for the names they like best. Voting in the branches will begin Feb. 3 and conclude March 1. On March 7, the winning names will be announced just in time for the opening of the new exhibit on March 15. SL

“We’ve been to every continent except for Asia and Antarctica.” He and his family raise funds to cover the costs of these trips by doing everything from cleaning houses to hosting evangelical gatherings. Most of the previous weddings officiated by Kruse were performed for members of his church’s youth groups or for his own family members. Ordained minister Gus Kruse believes zoos are perfect spots to enhance romance. He’s ready to help couples renew their vows at the Senior Safari & Wellness Walkabout and 2014 Boomer Guide Expo Friday, Feb. 7 at the Brevard Zoo. “I have a thing about zoos and dates. I think they’re great for couples, because they bring out the kid in all of us,” Kruse said. “I’ve never done a recommitment ceremony before, but I’m ready for as many couples as we get. It doesn’t matter whether it’s just one or 20, it’s going to be very special.” Kruse takes his responsibilities very seriously. He once had an opportunity to do weddings on a daily basis, but eschewed the revolving door approach that the job entailed. “I want people to understand the decision they are making,” he said. Kruse knows firsthand the heartbreak of divorce. His parents separated when he was just 5 years old. In 1998, he, too, went through a divorce, despite his best efforts. A member of the Church of the Avenue, Kruse has been an ordained minister since 1996, primarily focusing on evangelism and mission work. “My family has traveled to approximately 19 different countries with our mission work,” Kruse said.

Gourd show attracts visitors worldwide By Mary Brotherton

The Lambda Chapter of the American Gourd Society presents its Gourds Go Hawaiian show Feb. 21 through 23 at the Azan Shrine Center in Eau Gallie. The show always travels to the show chairperson’s home area and this is its third year in Melbourne. The Florida Gourd Society calls its chapters “gourd patches.” “We are lucky to have one of those patches here in Melbourne,” said Therese Ferguson, president of the local patch. “We meet once a month at the Eau Gallie Library for a demo and often a workshop taught by one of our members.” This year’s show is expected to attract more than 2,000 visitors. Protecting the shield: A strong relationship guards against stress from both ends of the generations By Linda Wiggins Having a great relationship is a challenge even during great times. To the extent we are under stress, the challenge can grow exponentially. Ironically, a great relationship is the perfect protection and shield against stress’ gamma rays. Financial friction, childrearing and pressure from parental relationships are some of top reasons couples give for seeking divorce. For members of the Sandwich Generation, finances can be strained as resources are spent on raising children or trying to keep adult children independent so they

protector and a healing balm to those of us sandwiched in the vortex between generations. Valentine’s Day month is a perfect time to pause and look at the little things we can do to improve our relationships. (Emphasis is on little, because in the Sandwich Generation there is little time for big things.) Of the members of the Sandwich Generation, one group’s relationships are under the greatest attack: those of us whose parents were older when we were born, or those of us who had children late, more so those of us who are older parents born of older parents, like me. One day, I realized the irony of having two different books on my night table vying for precious openeye time before lights-out. Bestsellers, “Magic 1-2-3” by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. advises of ways to discipline children without going nuts (vital for older parents), while “The Wisdom of Menopause” by Christiane Northrup, M.D. sought to show me that I wasn’t going nuts, but entering the time of my greatest joy, when I could finally do for myself above others. A friend in my shoes recently quipped over a rare shared meal out, “I like to go to places where I can get a senior discount and kids eat free.” When we found our conversation easily pulled to the topic of “how our husbands are not loving us right,” we made a pact: we would focus instead on how we could make our

relationships just a little bit better. So I mentally pulled out another bestseller, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” by John Gray, Ph.D. Generally, a man primarily needs to feel appreciated, and a woman primarily needs to feel loved. We reminded ourselves that it is vital to spend time alone together (a huge transgression that leads to feeling like mere co-parents, or worse, dried husks of co-parents), and we committed to finding babysitters for our children so our husbands could take us out on Valentine’s Day. We would lovingly ask for what we needed, and then when our spouse did it, we would lavish thanks upon them. This small step would make us feel loved (by receiving a gift of service), and it would lift our spouses to be thanked for doing it. By doing this, we would be oiling the shield that protects us from the attacks on The Sandwich Generation. SL Linda Wiggins is a member of the Sandwich Generation, which refers to persons who must oversee or provide care for an aging parent, while at the same time caring for young children or continuously keeping adult children from returning to the nest. Angelia Bell hopes the annual Valentine’s Day show planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at the King Center’s Studio Theater simultaneously will bring down the house and put students in the air.

Musical prodigy puts teens in air continued from page 9

Performing to packed houses is nothing new to Angelia. She first started performing professionally at age 17, at the popular Rudolph’s on Green Street, around the corner from Brenau University in Gainesville, in her native Georgia. She entered college there early on a partial scholarship and earned her fouryear music degree in three years. From then to now, Angelia has performed all over the country and recorded numerous albums of original music and popular covers, as well as the Christian music she has always preferred.

At the King Center show, she will be joined by Ashley Breaux and his band, which leads worship at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne. Together they are billed as “Angelia and Friends,” which opens the stage for a surprise guest or two, and will include some of the aviation students who dream of their name in lights as well as the sky. For more information on the show, call 321-288-7209; to learn more about her music, go to Angeliaonline. com; and for more information about the flight program, go to WingsofGraceMinistries.org. SL

When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn credits. These credits count toward retirement, survivors and disability benefits. The number of credits you need to qualify for disability benefits depends on your age, and some of the work must be recent. For example, the younger you are, the fewer credits you need to have. For most people, you need to have worked at least a total of 10 years, but if you are younger, you may qualify with as little as a year and a half of work. You don’t need to have had a heart attack, organ transplant or cancer to qualify for disability benefits. However, you must have a disability that is severe enough to render you unable to work and that is expected to last a year or longer, or result in death. If you have such a disability, you should start your application now. That’s because it takes time to determine whether you qualify for benefits. It usually takes three to four months for a medical decision from the state agency that evaluates your condition. If your application is approved, your first Social Security disability payment will be made for the sixth full month after the date the state agency determines that you qualify for disability benefits. For example, if the state agency determines you qualify for disability benefits effective Jan. 15, your first disability payment would be paid for the month of July. (Your July payment would be received in August.) It’s in your best interest to do everything you can to help speed the process. The best first step is for you to read our online publication, Disability Benefits, at socialsecurity. gov/pubs. It will tell you all about the process, including the information you will need to apply for benefits. Then, take advantage of our online disability starter kits. We have one starter kit for children and one for adults, and both are available in English and Spanish. The starter kit will help you get ready for your disability interview or online application, and provides information about the specific documents and the information that we will request from you. You will find the starter kits on our disability website at socialsecurity.gov/ disability, under Apply for Benefits. Once you complete your online disability starter kit and you’re ready to apply, the most convenient way to accomplish this is also online. Just visit socialsecurity.gov/ applyfordisability to begin. Swimmer remains young with regular workouts in the pool By Jeff Navin Mary Tusa never pushed her six children to swim and two of her children, who went on to become coaching legends in Brevard County, never forced their love of swimming upon their mother. It all came naturally. “All my life, I don’t ever not remember being able to swim,’’ said Tusa, a native of Brooklyn, who moved to Brevard County in 1966 with her first husband, John Hughes Sr., after he retired from the Air Force and took a job at Kennedy Space Center. “I swam as a kid, but not really competitively. We had a cabin in northern New Jersey in the summer, and we competed in some little swim meets. But, that was only in the summer. As a teenager, (competition) really didn’t interest me. But, any chance I got near a pool or a lake, I was in it.’’ Last year, Tusa won the One Hour Postal Swim in the women’s 80 to 84 age group in the 2013 United States Masters Swimming National Championships. She fell just short of completing 3,000 yards. “I’m really proud of that,’’ said Tusa, who will turn 84 on Feb. 14. “I got both a patch and a medal. A lot of things intervened, and I didn’t do it this year (in January). I hope to do it again next year when I move up an age group. Freestyle is my best stroke. I’m a long-distance swimmer more than anything else. Then, the backstroke. I’m not like Martha Henderson with her butterfly. Martha and I have so much fun going to swim meets together.’’ Two of her children, John Hughes and Maureen “Mo’’ Hughes, who both graduated from the University of Florida, came back to Brevard County to become influential swimming coaches. John Hughes was the coach at the Brevard Community College before the swim program was disbanded, and Mo Hughes guided swimmers at Merritt Island High School. “My rule was to never teach the kids how to swim or how to drive,’’ said Tusa, who lives in Rockledge

and trains at the YMCA in Suntree. “They had lessons and good instructors and they took to it naturally, both in swimming and other sports.’’ In 1994, her son told her about a group of swimmers, whom he coached, who were training for the Senior Games. Tusa, who was swimming quite a bit anyway, filled out the paperwork to join the Space Coast Masters. Now, she competes for the Florida Combined Aquatics Team (FACT). “I always want to be fit,’’ Tusa said. “I’m very healthy, but I did have a stent put in and that was shock of sorts. I’ve had melanoma, but that’s what you’ll get in Florida when you do so many things in the sun. I’ve always exercised — swimming, or floor exercise or walking. I feel it’s important for a long-lasting life. My grandmother lived to be 97 and she was still touching her toes. Longevity runs in my family, and I hope that my children all have that, too.’’ Her son, John Hughes, taught nutrition as well as physical education at Brevard Community College before retiring. She’ll ask him a question from time to time. “I try very hard to eat well,’’ Tusa said. “My husband Sal and I try to eat salads and fruits and just a little red meat. I take one daily vitamin and I do take a little dose of B-12.’’ Tusa is quick to recommend swimming for women and men in all age groups. “We have water aerobic classes and, if you like to swim, you can do two or three laps in the pool,’’ Tusa said. “Then, the next time you can do four or five laps. You don’t have to be speedy. Swimming gets all your body muscles going — the arms, the legs and the core.’’ Arthritis in her hands curtailed Tusa’s golf game in 2000. She used to be a regular at Patrick Air Force Base and Turtle Creek Golf Club. Dear Claire, Thank you for your inquiry about “Extra Help” for individuals enrolled in Medicare who meet certain income and asset limits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) assists with the annual deductible, monthly premium, and co-payment expenses associated with a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. This program is known as Extra Help or the Low Income Subsidy (LIS). The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates income and asset levels of those who apply for the Extra Help program. If income and assets are sufficiently low, most of those who qualify will pay no more than $2.65 for generic and $6.60 for brand name prescription drugs. Those medications must be on their Prescription Drug Plan’s list of covered drugs and must be purchased at a pharmacy within the plan’s network. Additionally, individuals enrolled in the Extra Help program do not have a drug coverage gap (i.e., the doughnut hole). Most will also qualify for a Part D prescription drug plan with no monthly premium cost to them. Who qualifies for Extra Help? Some people will automatically qualify for Extra Help if they have Medicare and have full Medicaid benefits, receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or get help from the state’s Medicaid program to pay Part B premiums. In 2013, a single person earning less than $17,235 in annual income ($23,265 for a married couple) and up to $13,300 in financial resources ($26,580 for a married couple) is

Ask Lance Lance P. Jarvis SHINE

eligible for Extra Help. The income limits will change when the Federal government updates them for 2014. If your yearly income is slightly higher than the amounts shown above, you still may qualify for Extra Help. If the numbers are close, it is always better to apply. SSA will determine the eligibility. How do I apply for Extra Help? There are several ways to submit an application: 1. Call Brevard SHINE at 321752-8080 and request to speak to a SHINE counselor. The SHINE counselor can provide you with a paper application. 2. Apply online at the Social Security website, ssa.gov. Click “Online Services” and then select “Apply for Benefits.” One of the options is to apply for Extra Help. 3. Go to your nearest Social Security Administration office and request the paper application for Extra Help (Form SSA-1020B). SHINE is an award-winning statewide volunteer program that provides free, unbiased, and confidential counseling and information for people on Medicare, their families, and caregivers. SHINE is a program of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is administered in partnership with the state’s 11 Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs). To contact a SHINE counselor for unbiased assistance, call the Elder Helpline toll-free at 1-800-9635337 or locally at 321-725-8080. In Brevard, there are 11 SHINE offices to serve you including two new offices in Satellite Beach. To find a SHINE counseling site near you, go to FloridaSHINE. org or call the numbers above. If you are not interested in becoming a SHINE volunteer counselor but need Medicare

assistance, call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337 or 321-7528080 (for Brevard County). You can also visit floridashine.org for more information. To find a local SHINE counseling site near you for in-person assistance, click on the “Counseling Sites” tab at the top of the web page.

Dear Lance, I am a Medicare beneficiary. Recently, I was speaking with my neighbor about the high costs of my prescriptions. She stated that a SHINE counselor helped her apply for “Extra Help” with her prescription drug costs. She was accepted and now pays no more than $6.60 for any of her brand name prescriptions and much less for her generic prescriptions. In addition, she stated that she does not pay a monthly premium for her Medicare prescription drug plan. How is this possible? How can I get “Extra Help”? —Claire, Satellite Beach

SALUTE

Former paratrooper shuns retirement, continues job at airport car rental center BY Maria Sonnenberg At an age when most men would be happy just watching television or perhaps engaging in a light round of golf, Lyle Henry spends 30-some hours per week repositioning rental cars at Melbourne International Airport. Henry, who will be 87 this year, is one of the line drivers for one of the airport’s rental car companies. His duties include picking up the arriving rentals to be cleaned and prepared for the next customers. Henry then brings the spiffed-up rentals back to the airport so customers have their cars ready when their plane touches down. He’s been at the Melbourne post for several years. The year 2012 was particularly difficult for Henry, who kept his job at the airport even while being primary caretaker for his son, who was battling terminal cancer. Henry has never been afraid of hard work. A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Henry joined the military two months SENIOR LIFE Photo after he turned 18 in 1946, training Lyle Henry spends 30-some hours at Fort Lee, Va. and joining the 11th per week repositioning rental cars at Airborne Division as a paratrooper. World War II, Henry was one of the soldiers tasked with bringing the world back to normalcy. His assignments took him to Sapporo, the fourth-largest city in Japan, located in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and the site of the 1972 Winter Olympics. Even though Japan at the time was in shambles, the area retained considerable natural attractions. “It’s beautiful country,” Henry said. Ringed by rivers and mountains, the city’s topography required Henry to add another skill set to his military resume: skiing. Trained to ski as part of the job of keeping peace, Henry would paratroop down into the mountains. “We’d jump with all our equipment to check on roads and railroads,” he said. “We’d usually have an interpreter with us to see how the locals were doing.” Following his stint in Japan, Henry left for a less scenic assignment in Korea. By the end of his military career, he had amassed 52 drops from a plane. Luck was on his side as he escaped enemy gunfire. “They missed me every

time,” he joked. In Korea, Henry, by then a master sergeant, was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy. Assigned to Orlando in the 1950s as first sergeant of an engineering/ aviation group tasked with building airport runaways, Henry first fell in love with Central Florida, although jobs took him to Texas for some time before he could “retire” in Melbourne. Until the savings and loan debacle of years back realigned the banking industry, Henry served as a bank vice president in charge of loans. The job eventually evaporated, but the ever-flexible Henry launched his own home improvement business until age made clambering up and down ladders too difficult. Although he sometimes thinks he might enjoy the freedom of retirement, Henry nevertheless still enjoys his duties as line driver at the airport, except for one aspect of the job. The lanky Henry, once well over 6-feet tall, has trouble with the car fleet’s smaller vehicles. “My long legs don’t fit in the compact cars,” he joked. SL

Silver Alert marks five years

and many saved lives

By linda wiggins It could have been his mother. Richard Rossell recalled the story of a Palm Bay woman with a memory disorder who got in her car and drove, then, in confusion, pulled off the interstate. Her car broke down and she remained in her vehicle for two days because she was afraid and didn’t know where she was. Thanks to a Silver Alert, which broadcasts a missing senior driver’s vehicle identification information along interstates, freeways and state roads and alerts media, hunters found her. The elder protection service recently turned five years old. “That’s just one example of many,” said Rossell, program director for the new Purple Balloon Alzheimer’s Awareness Center the community awareness arm of the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation. “It’s a wonderful service, and it’s going to become even more important as more people get early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and as more people in Florida age and experience memory disorders of any type.” Silver Alert was launched in 2008, but was publicized in earnest in 2011 by order of Florida Governor Rick Scott. “Individuals with dementia are at the greatest risk for wandering, and they make judgmental errors such as driving into wooded areas or water, driving the wrong way on the road, and not recognizing road signs,” said Mary Barnes, chair of the Florida Silver Alert Support Committee, tasked to raise awareness of the problem and educate citizens to respond to Silver Alerts. The program respresents a major collaboration between all law enforcement agencies and also the elder service agencies to whom the elder driver is referred once located, Barnes said. This year, the Silver Alert Committee is partnering with AAA South to provide notifications to AAA automotive service vehicle drivers throughout Florida. Seniors make up nearly a quarter of Florida’s population, and the number of older Floridians is expected to double by 2030, according to the Department

of Elder Affairs. “The Silver Alert program is a valuable tool for law enforcement to help locate missing seniors with Alzheimer’s or related dementia,” said Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Gretl Plessinger. Since Silver Alerts began, 712 Alerts have been issued and 92 seniors have been found after an individual saw a Silver Alert, recognized the missing senior and called law enforcement, she added. One unsolved Silver Alert case remains open and FDLE is still seeking public input, Plessinger said, for 86-year-old Newton H. Widden of

Sarasota, missing since 2102. As for Rossell, he meant it when he said the missing Palm Bay woman could have been his mother. He had to get creative in wresting the keys to her car from his own mother, since she was clearly unable to drive but resented giving up that mark of independence. “I told her my car broke down and I needed to borrow hers. I think she knew, and it made it easier because she didn’t have to face the issue, but it illustrates one of the most difficult issues in aging. “Unless you’ve experienced a loved one who can no longer drive, but resists your attempts to make them stop, you don’t realize what a tough issue this is. “Nobody wants to give up their independence, which is why Silver Alert is such a great answer to this huge problem.” For more information on Silver Alert, to give input or to register a missing senior, go to fdle.state.fl.us or call the Elder Helpline at 800-963-5337. Program looks at Florida and the American presidency by maria Sonnerberg For one reason or another, Florida has always been in the crosshairs of the president of the United States. For George Washington, the swampy peninsula was worrisome, a place where renegades and runaways could easily hide in between troublemaking episodes. For other commanders in chief such as Harry S Truman, the Sunshine State proved a heavenly respite from the rigors of office. “Presidents used to come regularly to Florida for vacation,” said Dr. Jim Clark, a historian and lecturer at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Clark, author of “Presidents in Florida, America’s Presidents and their Presence in Florida,” will visit Brevard to talk about the presidential connection to Florida during a free program at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16 at Franklin DeGroodt Library, 6475 Minton Rd. SW in Palm Bay. It’s a fascinating sidebar into our state from the viewpoint of the nation’s top leaders. From the first days of the presidency, the presidents of the new republic were well aware of Florida. After the American Revolution, when Florida reverted to Spain, the peninsula proved a headache for Washington because it served as a hiding place for criminals who could strike havoc in Georgia and quickly run for safety in Florida. In 1883, Chester A. Arthur was the first president to visit Florida for the sole purpose of fishing. Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad, opened just a few years before Arthur’s visit, making the journey easy. Of all the presidents, perhaps none enjoyed the state more than Missouri’s main man, Truman. “Truman spent eight months in Key West out of the eight years he was president in Florida,” said Clark.

“He didn’t even have a house, but he would stay at the naval base, which was free to him. It was a free vacation.” Alas, the days of extended presidential visits have come and gone. “President Obama comes into Orlando for a few hours and then is gone and sometimes we don’t even know about it until after the fact,” said Clark. What changed the Florida mindset of today’s president? For one thing, he favors Hawaii, and for another, presidents today don’t get as much free time as their predecessors. “Presidents today don’t go away for much more than a long weekend or at most a week,” Clark said. Never-before-seen artifacts and historic clothing to highlight Pioneer Day

Guide

New issue arrives Feb. 7

Pioneer Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Sams House at Pine Island is sure to please history buffs with displays of never-before-seen artifacts and historic clothing. Citrus grower John Sams’ descendants and relatives, including local residents Fred Woelk, Sandee Natowich, and Cindy Whalin, have graciously shared these items. Display coordinator Diana Sageser is an expert on historic clothing and artifacts. “The clothing in this exhibit shows wear, but they also show us needlework techniques used by women in the late 1880s and early 1900s. “We get a feel for what ladies could afford, and sometimes we see items that were made over, or saved from earlier times,” Sageser said. The display includes several white clothing pieces, which were worn by younger women as a sign of innocence, an evening bodice made in the Pouter Pigeon fashion, and several mourning outfits.

Sageser is donating a parasol from her own collection, which was owned by Betty Pfeiffer, wife of Orange County Chief Circuit Judge Frederick Pfeiffer. Handmade jewelry, including a brooch made from the hair of a loved one, a cigarette holder with teeth marks, a quilt, wooden and metal tools, houseware, and paper items such as gas-ration cards and postcards, will also be on display. Pioneer Day runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free, with a suggested donation of $1 per car for parking. Sams House at Pine Island is located at 6195 N. Tropical Trail on Merritt Island. The historic complex includes the oldeststanding home in Brevard County, the 1875 Sams Cabin. The property is located within the 1,000-acre Pine Island Conservation Area, which is owned and operated by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program. Art and tea at Pritchard House Gardens by Flora Reigada Paintings by local artists will be on exhibit during the en plein air (outdoor) art show. It will take place Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Pritchard House Family History Gardens, on the grounds of Titusville’s historic Pritchard House. Public viewing is free and begins at 11 a.m. Judging is scheduled for 1 p.m. The exhibit comprises 15 themed gardens, each sponsored by a family and marked by a plaque that explains their history. Families are mainly descendents of early Florida settlers. “Different types of art capture the beauty of the gardens,” said Roz Foster, President of the North Brevard Heritage Foundation. “Artists have been working on their paintings since last February because flowers bloom at different times and we wanted foliage painted in season.” Paintings are to be judged as to which 15 best represent their respective garden. They will be published in “The Family History Gardens Book,” to be released by the North Brevard Heritage Foundation in 2015. Other paintings will be offered for sale. Next, at 2 p.m. is Afternoon Tea on the Porch. Space is limited to 20 and tickets must be purchased by Feb. 10. Tickets are $25. A house tour is included. Her recipes utilize lemons and oranges grown on the property. “The depression glass was donated by Annie Maass,” Foster said. “Movie houses used to distribute these as promotional items.” With the event one day after Valentine’s Day, Foster noted that the linen and pink glass is in keeping with the holiday’s romantic theme. Future events include another chance to view winning paintings Saturday, March 15. Another tea that day includes a women’s vintage clothing exhibit, with clothing dating

Step lively at the North Brevard Senior Center by Flora Reigada Dance classes at the North Brevard Senior Center in Titusville provide the opportunity to get moving, meet people and have fun. Clogging is taught by Linda Peraza. “Clogging is similar to Irish dancing but also tap dancing because we have metal taps on our shoes,” Peraza said. “In America, it was originally done to mountain, country and Cajun

music, but it is now danced to any kind of music, even rock and roll.” She said clogging is largely footwork and excellent aerobic exercise. “However, we are mainly seniors and we pace ourselves.” The group holds occasional shows and performs at nursing homes. Lessons start at 10:30 a.m. each Friday at the North Brevard Senior Center at 909 Lane Ave. The cost is $2 per lesson for senior center members

and $3 for non-members. For additional information, call 321-383-0735. English country dancing is taught by Onie Senyk. Although there is some question as to its origins, Senyk credits King Louis XIV of France, who reigned from 1643 to 1715. She said the dance form began when the king wanted to entertain guests with something other than tumblers and jugglers. “He had a huge military and he decided the men would entertain guests with dance,” Senyk said. “Standing opposite each other in long lines, they would perform dance patterns created by the king, repeating them to music as they moved down the line. They would then work their way back to the top.” Known for being eccentric, the king expected soldiers to perform to his standards. If one didn’t measure up, the king would rise to demonstrate the proper technique, then relegate the offending soldier to the stable. Things are more relaxed in the classes Senyk teaches for fun and fitness. Lessons are held from 7 to 9 p.m. each Friday at the senior center. Cost is $2 per lesson for members and $3 for non-members. For additional information, call 321-636-2209 or 321-269-3682. The senior center also offers instruction in ballroom dancing, line dancing, tap and jazz.
