ANIMAL SHELTERS & BOARDING

EMERGENCY EVACUATION SHELTERS Shelter openings are incident specific. Never go to a shelter unless local officials have announced it is open. Shelter openings will be announced through local television, radio stations, social media and the Brevard County Emergency Management website.

Shelters are designed to house residents of the barrier islands (including Merritt Island), those in low-lying or flood-prone areas, those in mobile/manufactured homes, or those with no other sheltering options.

If you choose to go to a shelter, follow these instructions: • Stay as calm as possible and take your disaster supply kit.

• Bring your own cots or sleeping materials.

• Bring changes of clothing and wear sturdy shoes.

• If you have dietary restrictions, bring food that you will be able to eat.

• Bring what you need to stay comfortable and entertained.

• Not all shelters will have electricity throughout the emergency.

Rinaldi conquers adversity

M

elbourne chiropractor Frances Rinaldi approached her 50th birthday regretting how little time she had spent outside work and family. She decided to ride a bicycle cross-country after her husband Andre Merrill shared an article about a woman who had accomplished the feat.

“I wanted to do something unusual like that, but I had never done an athletic thing,” she said. With Merrill’s support, she trained with her piano teacher, a runner. “I asked if she’d bike with me, and she said only if you’ll run with me.”

Now 27 years later, Rinaldi looks back on five cross-country bicycle treks, a few half marathons, one full marathon, triathlons and adventure treks throughout Europe in Italy, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, and from Vienna to Budapest, and Bhutan. “All thanks to one decision to ride across the country,” Rinaldi said.

During her first triathlon, she barely made it up her first hill, and nearly drowned. She was chafed and couldn’t sit for a week. But she finished. Once recovered, she trained more rigorously. “I got a real bike and woke up before 5. I progressed to a new world,” she said. Rinaldi planned for the 2004 Southern Tier, a twomonth 3,400-mile trek from San Diego to St. Augustine to raise funds to fight breast cancer. But earlier in a Disney race, her pedal didn’t release during a crash. “I did a full 180 onto my back. I broke my pelvis and multiple bones.

Eventually, I got back on a bike, the hardest thing I ever did,” Rinaldi said.

She continued plans for the Southern Tier because they needed one more rider. Crossing the top of the first California hill, powered without changing gears, a 76-year-old fellow rider joined her for support and advice. “I would have dropped out, but I was addicted,” Rinaldi said.

Even with added training, she found time to paint, volunteer for the Special Spotlight Theater, Zonta

Club of Melbourne and storytelling with the Brevard Theatrical Ensemble.

Rinaldi’s first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage was in 2006 on the Camino del Norte.

“Seven of us slipped and slid on rocks and pulled feet out of the mud,” she said.

Before the epidemic, she hiked the Camino trail through Portugal, and hiked Mont Blanc — unknowingly myBoomerGuide.com

with a broken leg.

“We didn’t really know how intense that hike would be,” she said.

Mont Blanc’s trails were narrow, difficult to maneuver with steep drops and ever-changing weather conditions. “Even the seasoned hikers were challenged. Once on the slopes, there’s no turning back. I thought I had a bad sprain but, when I returned, home, I discovered my leg was broken.”

Two years ago, she walked the Australian coast and, last year, she and Merrill trekked through Alaska.

In October, Rinaldi plans a week-long bike ride along California’s coastline.

Rinaldi said she is taking Italian classes “to speak Italian va bene (well)” on her next overseas trip.

Her extreme treks might end, “but I’ll walk and ride whenever and wherever I can. This grand world was created to be appreciated,” she said. Rinaldi has authored seven books, some based on travels. “I’m always amazed at all she accomplishes,” Merrill said.

Rinaldi is grateful that he encourages her adventures and sometimes joins her. BG

Hilliard recently got back into backpacking after enjoying it in his youth. At Christmas time, he and a diving friend went backpacking in Torreya State Park in the Florida Panhandle, west of Tallahassee.

“We backpacked along the Apalachicola River, and it was just amazing,” Hilliard said. “It’s so funny. Everybody keeps saying there are no mountains in Florida. Well, they lied. It was like a billy goat trail that we were on and it kicked our butts.”

Hilliard credits his father and uncles for fostering his

love of the outdoors while he lived in California. “All my uncles had boats and so we would go to Lake Berryessa and Lake Tahoe and go fishing and water skiing, and visit the little islands and have picnics,” he said.

As much as he enjoyed the Bay Area outdoors scene, Hilliard prefers the easy access to his favorite Brevard County nature spots.

“When I was in the classroom, I would keep my kayak on the roof and I could get in an hour paddling after school and then go home,” he said. “It was wonderful.

I still love it. I definitely enjoy my Florida lifestyle.” BG

As a long-time teacher, Jonathan Hilliard receives great satisfaction in sharing his love of scuba diving with students. Hilliard helps instructors at Brevard Swim and Dive, a newly formed organization that introduces children in the Cocoa-Rockledge area to diving. Lessons are held at the Rockledge High School pool. Brevard Swim and Dive can also help adults become certified scuba divers.

This year’s Expo will be at the Viera Regional Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. The event marks the release of the 20th edition of the Boomer Guide — two decades of providing information to Brevard County residents.

The free magazine makes it easy to find local clubs, organizations, support groups, senior centers, emergency hurricane information, sports, veteran meetings and more. It’s essential for both newcomers and longtime Floridians.

“We are excited to present the latest edition of the Boomer Guide because we know that our readers have been waiting for it,” said Jill Blue, the publisher of the Boomer Guide, Senior Life and Viera Voice. “This will be another exciting BoomerFest! Expo. So come on out for the Expo and pick up your copy of the magazine.”

BoomerFest! will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 24. Orlando Health — Melbourne, Rhodes Law. P.A. and Parrish Medical Center will be the presenting sponsors.

Attendees will enjoy live music as they visit exhibitors, watch demonstrations, seminars and learn about valuable resources. There will be giveaways, and the first 250 lucky attendees will receive an exclusive tote bag. Guests will enjoy snacks and a coffee bar sponsored by Lucky Goat Coffee Company.

A mobile shredding truck will be available on site sponsored by Health First.

elanie Winters spent decades navigating the world with precision and discipline as a Navy captain. Today, she charts a vastly different kind of course — one defined not by orders or coordinates, but by curiosity, wonder and a deep desire to understand how people live beyond her own horizon.

Her journey into this new life didn’t begin with a passport stamp, but with a pair of hiking boots. In 2016, Winters set out on her first trek along the Appalachian Trail, unsure of exactly what she would find. What she discovered was not just the physical challenge of the trail, but a mental and emotional awakening.

Covering anywhere from 10 to 22 miles a day, she pushed through fatigue, discomfort and moments of doubt. But with each mile, something shifted.

“That hike gave me confidence,” Winters said. “It showed me I was capable of more than I thought.”

The rhythm of walking, step after step through changing landscapes, opened her eyes to a world that felt both vast and deeply connected. It wasn’t about reaching a destination.

It was about seeing, experiencing and understanding. That experience became a turning point.

After retiring from the Navy, Winters leaned fully into exploration.

She began traveling to places she had never seen before, drawn not by luxury or relaxation, but by a genuine curiosity about the world and its people. She seeks out experiences that allow her to immerse herself in diverse cultures, to observe daily life and to connect with others on a human level.

“I travel and explore new areas because I want to see how other

people live,” she said. “It reminds me that as humans, we’re more alike than we are different.”

In her travels, Winters has found a recurring truth: regardless of geography, language or culture, people share the same fundamental desires — to feel safe, to care for their families and to help one another when it matters most.

“It’s too easy to find myself experiencing feelings of annoyance when things don’t work out for one’s convenience,’’ Winters said. “Sitting in afternoon traffic and feeling like everyone is just trying to annoy me!

However, traveling helps me to refocus my perspective. In different environments and situations, I can focus on issues that are profoundly important and make these other inconveniences seem just what they are — inconveniences. Travel helps to remind me what is most important.”

For Winters, exploration is not just about discovery — it’s about grounding herself. Each journey serves as a reminder of what truly matters, pulling her away from distractions and back to a sense of clarity.

Winters remembers the stark contrast as she descended from a lush tropical rainforest into a barren volcanic crater.

The ground beneath her feet shifted from vibrant life to hardened lava fields. Steam rose from the earth, carrying the sharp scent of sulfur into the air.

“The scene was both eerie and awe-inspiring — a raw display of the planet’s power and beauty,” Winters said. “I was struck by how incredible this planet is. It stayed with me.”

Now, Winters doesn’t just travel to see new places — she travels to understand them. And in doing so, she continues to discover something even greater: a shared humanity that connects people across every landscape she crosses.

“I plan all my travel and adventures to minimize risk to myself,” Winters said. “I’m Melanie Winters often in awe of the vastness of

In the coming months, through 2026, Winter’s exploration travels will take her to Ecuador, South Africa, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Costa Rica, Vietnam and Cambodia. BG

Get ready to explore the Space Coast without limits — with the award-winning Boomer Guide! The newest edition of the premier magazine will make its debut and be available to take home at the annual Space Coast BoomerFest! Expo.

This year’s Expo will be at the Viera Regional Community Center at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way. The event marks the release of the 20th edition of the Boomer Guide — two decades of providing information to Brevard County residents.

The free magazine makes it easy to find local clubs, organizations, support groups, senior centers, emergency hurricane information, sports, veteran meetings and more. It’s essential for both newcomers and longtime Floridians.

“We are excited to present the latest edition of the Boomer Guide because we know that our readers have been waiting for it,” said Jill Blue, the publisher of the Boomer Guide, Senior Life and Viera Voice. “This will be another exciting BoomerFest! Expo. So come on out for the Expo and pick up your copy of the magazine.”

BoomerFest! will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 24. Orlando Health — Melbourne, Rhodes Law. P.A. and Parrish Medical Center will be the presenting sponsors.

Attendees will enjoy live music as they visit exhibitors, watch demonstrations, seminars and learn about valuable resources. There will be giveaways, and the first 250 lucky attendees will receive an exclusive tote bag. Guests will enjoy snacks and a coffee bar sponsored by Lucky Goat Coffee Company.

Ann Tarpey aspires to try new things. “If you don’t try something, how would you know if you like it or not?” Tarpey has tried Tai Chi, chair yoga and singing — something she was hesitant to try but hasn’t looked back on since. “Sometimes, people put limits on you,” Tarpey said. “I try not to because as long as I’m healthy and can physically do things, I keep trying

Steve Fouts is still new to the area. He’s been busy exploring all that the Space Coast has to offer, such as hiking through local wildlife refuges, taking strolls on the beach and playing golf. Fouts grew up in Bloomington, Illinois, along Route 66. He’s journeyed down the road many times, citing amazing museums and monuments.

“It’s great,” he said. He encourages everyone to try it.

Nancy Sauter was selected Best Petite Model in the 2019 Florida Model of the Year competition.

Since then, her modeling restarted with the Boomer Guide. “It’s never too late,” she said. “Just look at Martha Stewart!” Sauter’s inspiration comes from the words of Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

Brenda Jones was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis. She refuses to let that stop her. She stays healthy by taking strolls through her neighborhood, around the Avenue Viera and along the Banana River.

Jones shares her passion for walking with her daughter.

“We do at least three miles,” Jones said. “It’s at my pace, since she’s going to walk much faster, but she knows that I have this illness and helps me to try to keep my stamina.”

Gail Martin is a native Floridian and avid traveler.

For the past three years, she’s trekked all over the globe. On her last cruise, Martin flew to Athens, Greece and wound up in Venice, Italy.

She has traveled to Quebec, London and Reykjavík, Iceland. During an Alaskan excursion, Martin had the exciting opportunity to board a helicopter for a tour of the glaciers. It was her first time on a helicopter. “It was exhilarating.”

Phyllis Irvine, a recent retiree, is exploring different ways to stay fit. “I’m really into exercise and health,” she said. Aside from being a dancer with the Golden Steppers, a local tap dancing group, Irvine has taken up Tai Chi. “I’m just retired, so I’m trying to explore different things,” Irvine said, “Tai Chi just reached out at me.”

Irvine often travels to North Carolina, where she enjoys swimming, hiking and boating.

Gerald Bertekap is a reallife treasure hunter, just like Indiana Jones — although instead of Jones’ signature whip, Bertekap is equipped with his metal detector. As a member of the Treasure Coast Archaeology Society, he’s scoured the sands for rings, jewelry and coins from the 1715 Fleet Shipwreck.

“You find all kinds of things on the beach and playgrounds and by amusement parks, old buildings,” he said. “I wanted something exciting to do, so I took up metal detecting.”

Carole Bertekap loves exploring new hobbies and new locations. She and her husband have been to Africa, Hong Kong, as well as traveling around the continental United States.

Her next, grand venture?

“I’m looking to go out to the Pacific Northwest, to the San Juan Islands, explore mountains and wildlife other than what’s here in Florida,” she said.

“The Pacific Northwest will show me a different part of the world, you know?”

When he’s not on the clock, Carlin does fitness training, pushing people to meet their fitness goals. Carlin breaks past numerous limits to achieve his goals. “I’ve overcome a lot of adversity in my life physically and health wise,” he said. “I just push myself, each and every day to be the best person I can be.”

From dancing on Broadway to appearing on “America’s Got Talent,” Elaine Terranova has made waves. “I am exploring life,” she said. “I’ve been a performer.

I’ve choreographed. I’ve danced with the best of them.” She’s shared the stage with Bob Fosse and others. Recently, Terranova has rediscovered her passion for singing. “Dancing is a bit rough now at 89,” she said. “So I sing.”

Nada Devito used to spend her days horseback riding on a 10-acre ranch in Indian River County. “We would just tack our horses up in the barn, put their saddles on and get them ready.

We would just ride,” she said. “We didn’t have to travel anywhere. We didn’t have to cart them anywhere if we didn’t want to. We could just get on them and ride.”

Unfortunately, a car accident in 2023 brought an end to Devito’s horseback riding days. While her cowgirl days may be over, Devito still explores ways to keep her mind and body healthy, such as working out with a personal trainer and researching which food is the healthiest for her diet. “To me, first and foremost is my health,” she said.

“And then comes the circle around you, whether that’s your family, your dog, your work … you’re no good unless you really have your feet planted on the ground solidly and you’re healthy.”

Despite initially being thrown off by the bright studio lights and the flash of the camera, Trooper, the 9-year-old purebred Siberian Husky, proved himself to be the paw-fect model! In 2020, Trooper was one of 30 huskies rescued from a hoarding situation before being adopted by Devito. While he prefers to remain an “only dog,” Trooper is wonderful with people. Trooper is very talkative and isn’t afraid to yell until he gets his way. Devito and her husband swear that Trooper understands what they’re saying. “He’s a survivor,” Devito said. “And I’m thrilled to be his mom.”

Aging Matters in Brevard — programs for seniors Caregiver Resource Center: The Sunflower House offers education, exercise and support programs for caregivers. Donated medical equipment and supplies are available.

Seniors at Lunch: Bus transportation is provided to many locations throughout the county for adults, 60 and older, who gather for dining. Hot meals and activities are offered. Call to RSVP.

Home safety: The Senior Assistance Program provides environmental modifications to improve accessibility, safety and security for the home.

Background-checked handymen will install grab bars, build access ramps and perform other safety-related services. The cost varies.

Transportation: Senior TranServe provides transportation for medical appointments, grocery shopping and to visit relatives for seniors 55 and older. Seniors must be ambulatory and capable of entering and exiting a vehicle without help. A sevenday advance notice is required.

In-home care: Licensed healthcare workers provide personal care, homemaking, respite care and case management. For an assessment, call 321-806-3802.

Meals on Wheels: Trained volunteers deliver meals and offer a safety check. Call for an appointment.

Seniors At Lunch is held at nutrition centers within the North, Central and South areas of Brevard County every weekday and provides hot meals and activities for seniors, who are 60 years and older. Participants will enjoy food, friendship and activities. Bus transportation provided to many participating centers.

Meal reservations at all sites are needed by 12:30 p.m. the previous serving day.

Centers are open Monday through Friday, except where noted.

EARLY VOTING Early voting for federal or state races is available at all Supervisor of Elections offices and, at the Supervisor’s discretion, at certain other locations, beginning 10 days before Election Day and running through the third day before the election. Additional early voting may be offered at the Supervisor’s discretion on the 15th through 11th and on the second day before the election. Identification requirements for early voting are the same as for voting on Election Day.
