English Since taking over the post of Artistic Director in the summer of 2006, Aaron S. Watkin has transformed the Semperoper Ballett into an international company of world standing. Over the past years I have observed with great satisfaction how a group of brilliant individual dancers have cohered into a versatile, expressive and powerful ballet ensemble. Together we review with some pride an impressive repertoire ranging from classical narrative ballets and neoclassical masterpieces to contemporary choreographies of the highest artistic stan­dard and featuring the most important names in the world of ballet. All this mirrors Watkin’s vision of breaking down the borders that traditionally exist between classical and contemporary dance, thereby redefining dance as a culmination of both these styles.

Many of today’s most celebrated choreographers have created new works for the Semperoper Ballett; indeed, they return time and again to work with a company which in the meantime enjoys international recognition and respect. Now the time is ripe to accept the invitations pouring in from around the world in order to present the utmost perfection, individuality and passion that characterises the ensemble to audiences outside of Germany. In the current season the company is travelling to France, Spain, Austria and Belgium with three works by William Forsythe, as well as to New York, where it will thrill audiences at the »Fall for Dance Festival«. Alongside the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Semperoper Ballett is the second important cul­tural ambassador of the Semperoper Dresden, contributing to the institution’s considerable prestige.

Ich bin überaus glücklich darüber, dass Aaron S. Watkin bis mindestens zum Ende der Saison 2017 / 18 weiter an unserem Hause arbeiten und seine Ideen und Projekte weiter voranbringen kann.

Deutsch Unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Aaron S. Watkin hat sich das Semperoper Ballett seit dem Beginn seiner Ballettdirektion im Sommer 2006 zu einer internationalen Company von Weltformat entwickelt. Mit großer Freude beobachte ich, wie herausragende Tänzerpersönlichkeiten in den vergangenen Jahren zu einem vielseitigen, ausdrucksstarken und leistungsfähigen Ballettensemble zusammengewachsen sind.

Gemeinsam blicken wir stolz auf ein beeindruckendes Repertoire, das sich vom klassischen Handlungsballett über neoklassische Meisterwerke bis hin zum zeitgenössischen Tanz auf höchstem Niveau bewegt und eine Vielzahl der wichtigsten Namen der Ballettwelt beinhaltet – ganz im Sinne der

künstlerischen Vision Watkins, die Grenzen zu überwinden, die traditionell zwischen klassischem und zeitgenössischem Tanz bestehen, um so den Tanz als Krönung beider Stile neu definieren zu können.

Viele der renommiertesten Choreografen haben Neukreationen für das Semperoper Ballett geschaffen und kehren immer wieder nach Dresden zurück, die Arbeit mit der Company schätzend, welche inzwischen internationale Aufmerksamkeit und Respekt genießt. Es ist nun an der Zeit, den Gastspieleinladungen aus aller Welt zu folgen und das hohe Maß an Perfektion, Individualität und Leidenschaft, das unser Ballettensemble auszeichnet, über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinweg zu präsentieren. In der aktuellen Saison geht die Company mit drei Werken von William Forsythe auf Tournee in Frankreich, Spanien, Österreich und Belgien und wird auch beim »Fall for Dance Festival« in New York vertreten sein und Tanzfans begeistern.

Das Semperoper Ballett wird damit neben der Sächsischen Staatskapelle Dresden zum zweiten wichtigen Kulturbotschafter der Semperoper Dresden und trägt zum hohen Renommee unseres Hauses bei.

Zu dieser erfolgreichen Entwicklung beglückwünsche ich die Company und ihren Ballettdirektor Aaron S. Watkin von ganzem Herzen, der – kaum zu glauben – nach seiner Karriere als Tänzer hier in Dresden seine erste Direktionsposition wahrnimmt. Seine gelungene Arbeit spiegelt sich nicht zuletzt in unserem begeisterten Ballettpublikum wieder und ich freue mich sehr, dass gerade auch viele junge Menschen zu den treuen Besuchern des Balletts gehören.

I sincerely congratulate the company on this successful development, and in particular its director, Aaron S. Watkin, who, we remember with astonishment, came to Dresden as a novice director after finishing his career as a dancer. His achievements are clearly reflected in the enthusiasm of our audiences, and I am delighted that many young people have become loyal ballet fans.

And, of course, we are all thrilled that Aaron S. Watkin will remain with us until at least the conclusion of the 2017 / 18 season, during which time he will continue to develop his ideas and projects. With pleasure and commitment I will do my best to support him and his brilliant ensemble to pursue their chosen artistic path with continued success. I wish them, and indeed all of us, many more memorable experiences with the Semperoper Ballett and an exciting season 2014 /15.

English Eight seasons have passed since the start of our newly branded company, the Semperoper Ballett, and we now begin to say goodbye to one generation of dancers, the pioneers that carved our identity onto the world dance scene. With this change come feelings of sadness and uncertainty, as these experienced artists have defined our artistic and technical level and fed our younger generation a wealth of invaluable knowledge. At the same time, this natural cyclectic evolution brings feelings of excitement and inspiration, new challenges and the opportunity to nurture our next generation to blossom into the soloists of tomorrow. Both of these generations are essential players in our evolution: The former have paved the road at home in Dresden and created our internal identity, our »company culture«.

The next generation can continue to define our external identity by promoting and presenting us to the world through touring. We now have a world-class ensem­ble of highly sophisticated individual artists who can move through an enormous allencompassing dance repertoire with an impeccable standard. Our repertoire now includes iconic works of most of the great masters of our time, as well as crea­tions especially made for our dancers by new up-and-coming choreographers. Respecting the past while looking towards the future – as Sarah Weir put it »You can look to the past but be careful not to stare«.

My vision for our company has been resolute from the beginning: to break down the boarders that traditionally exist between different styles of dance, to embrace all dance styles from classical to

Unsere beiden Premieren in dieser Spielzeit beinhalten zuerst am 15. Februar 2015 die Weltpremiere von »Tristan + Isolde«, ein abendfüllendes Handlungsballett des herausragenden britischen Choreografen David Dawson. Unsere zweite Premiere folgt am 22. Mai 2015 mit dem bahnbrechenden Werk »Impressing the Czar« des weltbekannten Choreografen William Forsythe. Zum Ende der Saison gestalten wir das Internationale Tanzfestival Dresden mit. Bei diesem Festival, das am 19. Juni 2015 beginnt und über drei Wochen dauert, werden wir mit vier verschiedenen Programmen vertreten sein.

Darüber hinaus bin ich sehr glücklich, Ihnen mitteilen zu dürfen, dass mein Vertrag als Ballettdirektor des Semperoper Ballett bis 2018 verlängert wurde. Mein Hauptaugenmerk wird nun auf der Verstärkung unserer internationalen Präsenz liegen.

In dieser Spielzeit werden wir nach New York, St. Pölten, Paris, Barcelona und Antwerpen reisen. Ich freue mich darauf, endlich die Möglichkeit zu erhalten, unser einzigartiges Ensemble der Welt vorstellen zu können.

Deutsch Acht Spielzeiten sind bereits vergangen seit dem Start unseres neu gegründeten Ensembles Semperoper Ballett, und damit kommt nun der Zeitpunkt, an dem wir uns von einer Generation unserer Tänzer verabschieden müssen, den Pionieren, die dazu beigetragen haben, dass unser Name in der internationalen Tanzszene bekannt wurde. Dieser Wechsel bringt auch

Gefühle der Traurigkeit und Ungewissheit mit sich, da diese erfahrenen Künstler das künstlerische und technische Niveau unserer Company mitbestimmt und ihr unschätzbares Wissen an die folgende Generation weitergegeben haben. Gleichzeitig ist diese natürliche Veränderung aber auch besonders aufregend und inspirierend, da sie neue Herausforderungen und die Möglichkeit birgt, eine nächste Tänzergeneration heranwachsen zu sehen, aus der die Solisten der Zukunft hervorgehen werden.

Beide Generationen sind elementar in der Entwicklung unseres Ensembles. Die Ersten haben hier zu Hause in Dresden mit großem Einsatz den Weg geebnet und unsere eigene Identität geschaffen, unsere »Ensemblekultur«. Darauf kann die nachfolgende Generation aufbauen und unsere zweite Identität formen, indem sie uns bei internationalen Tourneen in der Welt präsentiert. Wir haben uns zu einem Ensemble von Weltrang entwickelt – hochqualifizierte und individuelle Künstler, die ein enormes Repertoire beherrschen, auf meisterlichem Niveau. Unser Repertoire umfasst heute die richtungsweisenden Werke der meisten großen Choreografen unserer Zeit sowie Kreationen, die speziell für unsere Tänzer von jungen aufstrebenden Choreografen geschaffen wurden. Die Vergangenheit respektieren, aber dabei auch in die Zukunft blicken, so fasste es auch Sarah Weir in Worte: »Du kannst in die Vergangenheit zurückblicken, gerate dabei aber nicht ins Starren.« Meine Vision für unsere Company war von Anfang an sehr entschlossen: Die Grenzen zu überwinden, die traditionell zwischen klassischem und zeitgenössischem Tanz bestehen, um alle Tanzstile

neo-classical and modern with the same respect and integrity. We define our identity as a current »contemporary dance company« of today.

Our two premiers this season will include firstly, on 15 February 2015, a world premiere of »Tristan + Isolde« a full-length narrative by prominent British choreographer David Dawson. Our second premiere on 22 May 2015 will be world renowned choreographer William Forsythe’s iconic full-length »Impressing the Czar«. At the end of the season we will present the International Dance Festival Dresden. This festival will be held over three weeks beginning on 19 June 2015 and we will present four very diverse programs.

On another note, I am happy to announce that my contract as the Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett has been extended until 2018. My main focus now will be to foster our international presence.

This season we will tour to New York, St. Pölten, Paris, Barcelona and Antwerp. I look forward to finally having the opportunity to present our unique company to the world.

Aaron S.Watkin Biografie

English Born in Canada, Aaron Sean Watkin graduated from The National Ballet School of Canada in 1988 winning the prestigious Erik Bruhn Award, awarded to the most promising student in the school. Watkin is experienced in a variety of different styles of dance including Cecchetti, Vaganova, Bournonville, Balanchine and the French and English styles. Watkin enjoyed a full career in dance beginning with leading classical companies including the National Ballet of Canada, the English National Ballet and the Het Nationale Ballet. After seven years of classical repertoire, he was invited by William Forsythe to become a Principal Dancer with the Ballett Frankfurt.

Watkin always admired the works of Nacho Duato and in 2000 he joined his company, La Compañia Nacional de Danza de Nacho Duato. In June 2002 Watkin was appointed Associate Artistic Director to Víctor Ullate Ballet in Madrid. Watkin was a personal choreographic assistant to William Forsythe, in charge of setting and rehearsing his ballets on dance companies throughout the world. In 2005 he assisted David Dawson for his creation of »Reverence« for the Kirov Ballet and Johan Inger for his creation of »Negro con Flores« for the Cullberg

Ballet. Watkin was a guest teacher to many of Europe’s leading dance companies and the Artistic Associate Director of The Loft Dance Studio in Brussels. Watkin was also the Artistic Associate Director of the annual »Dance For Life« AIDS benefit gala at the Cirque Royal Theatre in Brussels. In 2006 Aaron S. Watkin became the Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett. In 2007 Aaron S. Watkin created his first full length ballet production »The Sleeping Beauty« followed by »La Bayadère« in 2008, »Swan Lake« in 2009 and a new production of »The Nutcracker« together with the Rector of the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, Prof. Jason Beechey, in 2011.

Deutsch Aaron Sean Watkin wurde in Kanada geboren. Als Schüler der National Ballet School of Canada wurde er 1988 mit dem renommierten Erik Bruhn Award ausgezeichnet. Deutsch Tief in der Vergangenheit liegen die Ursprünge der ältesten abendländischen Liebesgeschichte »Tristan und Isolde«.

Eine Sage keltischen Ursprungs über einen Zauber, der Isolde, die Prinzessin von Irland, und Tristan, ihren Brautwerber und Feind, in tiefster Liebe aneinanderbindet. Eine Liebe, zu groß für jeden Widerstand. Eine Verbindung, zu mächtig für alles Irdische. Weder Tristans Treue zu seinem Oheim Marke noch Isoldes Schuldgefühle gegenüber ihrem gefallenen Verlobten können die gegenseitige Anziehung schwächen. Wenn es um Tristan und Isolde geht, zählt nur eines: die tiefe, ewige, brennende Liebe. English The origins of »Tristan und Isolde«, perhaps the oldest European love story, lie far back in the mists of time. This Celtic legend tells of a magic spell which ensnares Isolde, princess of Ireland, and Tristan, her enemy and the man entrusted to bring her to England to marry the king.

Their burgeoning love cannot be quashed.

This is a bond too strong for earthly powers to break. Neither Tristan’s loyalty to his uncle, King Mark, nor Isolde’s feelings of guilt towards her dead lover can temper their attraction to one another. At the heart of the story of Tristan and Isolde is one, and one thing only: a bottomless, eternal, burning love. Following countless novels, Richard Wagner’s opera of the same name as well as film adaptations, these immortal lovers are now to be transformed into the ballet vocabulary of David Dawson. The first narrative ballet of this multi prizewinning choreographer was »Giselle«, created during his residency as choreographer to Semperoper Ballett. Now, together with the Polish composer Szymon Brzóska, he tackles this ancient myth. David Dawson’s typically elegant style, underscored by the modern, heart-rending sounds of Brzóska’s new composition, will breathe new life into this enduring love story.

Dawson I think the relationship between Tristan and Isolde is quite unique: mysterious, mythical, dark, romantic and tragic all at the same time. Therefore it is a real challenge to create a piece infused with all these emotions. »Tristan + Isolde« is more than just a simple love story, although that would be interesting enough in itself; love is a captivating subject for us all. Yet »Tristan + Isolde« tells the tragic story of finding and losing true love, of meeting your ideal partner and then being forced apart by moral and social constrictions. In contrast to Romeo and Juliet, the greatest lovebirds in the history of ballet, Tristan and Isolde are adults, and their love is an adult love.

They try to suppress their attraction to one another and stay faithful to those around them. When this tactic does not succeed, they choose suicide. This is a very human drama, and that is what makes the story so unbelievably touching.

Dawson In fact, I would say that all my works are narrative in some way or other.

They always deal with a specific topic, in

which diverse emotions come to light or particular situations are examined. The unique challenge of a narrative ballet is to work with a fixed linear plot. As a choreographer you must find a way to convey a complex story without words. Diverse characters, as well as their individual feelings or thoughts, must be portrayed using movement. The legend of »Tristan and Isolde« is perhaps especially complicated in view of the various time frames in which it takes place as well as the internalized nature of the story. At the same time it is an advantage to make use of a well-known story and not to have to make every single decision oneself. After creating so many abstract choreographies in recent years, I am enjoying working on a narrative ballet. It’s as if I have descended from a heaven of opportunities back down to solid ground. Now I have a foundation. That really is a nice challenge.

Dawson There is no doubt that »Tristan und Isolde« is a true masterpiece; but it is and remains an opera, in which the vocal parts and orchestral parts are inextricably linked. The vocal melodies and the orchestral melodies are in a continuous, organic flux, so that the score cannot simply be taken apart and glued back together again. Yet, ballet demands an entirely dif-

ferent narrative style – flashbacks, as often used in opera, are difficult to realize.

Therefore we decided to create something wholly new, to choose contemporary, more abstract music, in order to realize an innovative and fresh interpretation. The aim is to reinvent the myth of Tristan and Isolde.

We are a different generation, with its very own unique take on things. The ballet should be able to function on its own terms.

Dawson Ich denke, die Beziehung von Tristan und Isolde ist eine ganz besondere: Sie ist mysteriös, mythisch, dunkel, romantisch und tragisch zugleich. Ein Stück über und aus all diesen Emotionen zu kreieren, ist eine große Herausforderung. »Tristan + Isolde« ist mehr als eine normale Liebesgeschichte – obwohl das alleine schon reizvoll genug wäre, übt Liebe doch auf uns alle eine große Anziehungskraft aus. »Tristan + Isolde« erzählt von der Tragödie, wahre Liebe zu finden und wieder zu verlieren, dem idealen Partner zu begegnen und gleichzeitig durch moralische und gesellschaftliche Verpflichtungen von ihm getrennt zu sein.

Dawson Richard Wagners »Tristan und Isolde« ist ohne Frage ein Meisterwerk, aber es ist und bleibt eine Oper. In diesem Musikdrama ist der Gesang untrennbar mit der Orchestermusik verknüpft und Verswie Orchestermelodie entwickeln sich kontinuierlich weiter. Man kann diese Musik nicht auseinandernehmen und neu zusammensetzen. Das Ballett verlangt nach einer anderen Erzählstruktur – Rückblenden, wie sie die Oper einsetzt, sind schwierig zu gestalten. Wir haben uns deshalb entschieden, für unsere Neukreation auch eine neue, etwas abstraktere Musik zu wählen, da wir etwas Neues und Frisches wagen möchten, um den Mythos von Tristan und Isolde fortzuspinnen. Wir sind eine andere Generation und haben unsere eigene Interpretation des Geschehens. Das Ballett soll für sich bestehen können.

Dawson Wenn man so will, sind eigentlich all meine Werke auf ihre Weise narrativ.

Sie behandeln immer ein bestimmtes Thema, drücken unterschiedliche Emotionen aus oder beschäftigen sich mit einer speziellen Situation. Das Besondere am Handlungsballett ist nun, mit einem vorgegebenen, linearen Plot zu arbeiten. Als Choreograf steht man dabei vor der Herausforderung, ohne Worte eine komplexe Handlung zu transportieren. Nur mit dem Mittel der Bewegung muss man unterschiedliche Charaktere herausarbeiten und einzelne Gefühle oder Gedanken artikulieren. Der Mythos »Tristan und Isolde« mit seinen Zeitsprüngen und seinem großen Anteil an innerer Handlung ist dabei besonders kompliziert. Gleichzeitig ist es aber auch von Vorteil, einer bereits vorgegebenen Geschichte folgen zu können und nicht alle Entscheidungen selbst treffen zu müssen. Nachdem ich in den letzten Jahren viele abstrakte Choreografien kreiert habe, genieße ich es nun sehr, ein Handlungsballett zu erarbeiten. Es ist, als würde ich aus einem Himmel an Möglich-

keiten wieder zurück auf die Erde kommen. Ich habe nun eine Basis. Das ist eine schöne Herausforderung.

Doch längst hat es ihn hinweggefegt, wie die lebende Legende William Forsythe stets Konventionen des Tanzes über den Haufen wirft: Radikal, gespickt mit Witz, demonstriert er dies in seinem wegweisenden, 1988 uraufgeführten »Impressing the Czar«. Ausstattungsopulent beginnt dieses Handlungsballett ohne Handlung, ein frecher Bilderbogen, der sich als beißendes Spiel mit Kunsthistorie entpuppt und zugleich die Tanzgeschichte dekonstruiert. Auf deren Trümmern errichtet Forsythe eine neue Welt: Traditionelle Ballettfiguren werden gesteigert, beschleunigt, neu kombiniert und formieren als »In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated« – seit 2006 im Repertoire des Semperoper Ballett – den Mittelteil dieses Ballettabends. English Golden cherries, glittering clothes, a ballet with classical music – the Czar would have been impressed. Yet his pleasure would soon turn to apoplexy at that way in which this living legend, William Forsythe, continually cocks a snook at the conventions of dance. Radical and full of humour, »Impressing the Czar« (premiered in 1988) is pure Forsythe and a seminal work. The narrative ballet begins with a flourish of opulence and without any narrative, a brash series of images that turns into a bitter examination of art history while simultaneously deconstructing the traditions of dance.

Forsythe erects a new world on what remains. Traditional ballet figures are heightened, accelerated and recombined in the central section of this ballet evening, »In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated«, which has been part of the repertoire of the Semperoper Ballett since 2006. Electronic beats accompany this celebration of dance and dancers, or as one dance critic put it: »Drive, sex and virtuosity«. All that is extraneous is eliminated, leaving the dregs of our cultural heritage to be auctioned at the end of »Czar«. And what is left: a wild band of college girls, like in some MTV clip,

Watkin When I first joined William Forsythe’s company in Frankfurt as a young dancer I immediately felt that he approached me as an individual and encouraged me in my development. Perhaps the importance of examining and questioning oneself sounds self-evident, but in the world of ballet that is frequently not the case. This form of self-experience, challenging both the body and the mind, takes time. It is a gradual process of taking responsibility for one’s self. The diversity of the dancers in Frankfurt showed that William Forsythe is fascinated by the individuality of each person, in those aspects which make them unique.

Forsythe Yes, I am solely interested in the people with whom I am working. I mean that the basic tenor of my working relationships, which I always try to maintain, is an intense curiosity in the other person. This fascination can affect the concrete situation in which the dancers and I find ourselves. These are full of countless variables that can influence our perception of reality, the facts of our current existence. It is important to ask whether one is really seeing the other person, or

perhaps only a perception of them filtered through a screen of expectations. Curiosity is a very useful state of mind for both parties in a working relationship.

M r Fo r sythe, yo ur trail b l azing choreographies are performed all a ro u n d t h e w o r l d . To w h i c h e xtent d o yo u feel yo ur sel f to b e a » father figure«?

Forsythe I think that in relation to dance I’m not really a »father figure«. It’s vital that choreographer and dancers view themselves as equal partners. If you ask me whether I demand unquestioned authority in the studio, then of course the answer is no; that would be a very unpleasant and unproductive situation.

Those of us working on a new piece in the studio strive to find topics that are mutually stimulating. Human movement is such a complex phenomenon that perhaps the only »law« is to pursue a collaborative spirit of exploration.

M r Watkin, what d o yo u tr y to i mp ress o n yo ur d ancer s?

Watkin Believe in yourself, discover yourself, dare to do your own thing: that’s what I learnt from William Forsythe, and that’s what I wish to convey to my dancers. There are still many companies which do not leave any space for such freedom.

And, of course, the larger a company, the more quickly a hierarchy develops.

Certainly there has to be some form of authority: the dancers have to learn the steps. Yet whenwe are studying a new

work, such as by William Forsythe, and the choreographer is present, then the focus has to be on the bigger picture. I would call it coaching – that special something which breathes life into a work.

Then we have reached the next stage, and a choreography becomes true art.

Watkin I have been Artistic Director in Dresden for almost eight years, and during this time my company and I have undertaken a real artistic odyssey. From the very beginning it was my intention to tear down the traditional borders that exist between classical ballet and modern dance, for which the choreographies of William Forsythe are ideally suited. I want to avoid the Semperoper Ballett being categorised as either a classical or modern company.

My intention is for us to be recognised as a contemporary ensemble, in the sense of one in continual development. This is a journey we are making together with our audiences. »Impressing the Czar« is the next challenge.

Watkin Als ich als Tänzer neu in William Forsythes Company nach Frankfurt kam, habe ich mich sofort von ihm als Individuum angesprochen und mich gefördert gefühlt. Die Aufforderung, ein bewusst denkender und hinterfragender Mensch zu sein, klingt vielleicht selbstverständlich, ist aber in der Ballettwelt bis heute noch keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Diese Art der Selbsterfahrung, die Körper und auch den Geist beanspruchte, dauerte eine Weile. Es ist ein Prozess, Verantwortung für sich selbst zu übernehmen – die Mischung der Tänzer in Frankfurt machte deutlich, dass es William Forsythe um Persönlichkeiten geht, um das Besondere in jedem einzelnen.

Forsythe Ich denke, dass ich mich im Bezug auf den Tanz nicht so sehr als »VaterFigur« eigne. Als Choreograf und Tänzer sollte man sich auf der gleichen Augenhöhe begegnen. Vielleicht fragt man sich, ob meine Autorität in der Arbeits­situation nie zu hinterfragen sei, und ich würde darauf sagen, dass dies dann sehr unangenehme und unproduktive Bedingungen wären.

Diejenigen von uns, die in dem Raum etwas erarbeiten, versuchen, Themen von gemeinsamem Interesse zu finden, und da die menschliche Bewegung ein komplexes Phänomen darstellt, ist die kollaborative Erforschung beinahe das einzige Gebot.

He r r Watkin, was geb en Sie an I h re Tänzer weiter ?

Watkin An mich selbst zu glauben, mich selbst zu finden, mich zu eigenen Taten zu ermutigen, das habe ich von William Forsythe mitgenommen und das möchte ich an meine Tänzer weitergeben. Es gibt immer noch viele Companys, in denen kein Raum für diese Freiheit herrscht.

Und natürlich, je größer eine Company, desto schneller wird es hierarchisch. Um

Autorität kommt man natürlich nicht herum: Schritte zu lernen, ist die Basis, doch wenn dann wie bei einer Neueinstudierung, etwa eines Werkes von William Forsythe, der Choreograf selbst kommt, geht es um Essenzielles. Ich würde es Coaching nennen: etwas, das dem Werk wirkliches Leben einhaucht. Damit ist die nächste Stufe erreicht, und eine Choreografie wird zur Kunst.

Nach »Ein William Forsythe Ballettabend« im Jahre 2012 und zahlreichen weiteren Werken von Forsythe steht nun in der Spielzeit 2014 / 15 »Impressing the Czar« an, ein abendfüllendes Ballett – sind Tänzer und Publikum reif dafür?

Watkin Über die bald acht Jahre, die ich hier in Dresden Ballettdirektor bin, habe ich natürlich eine Strecke mit meiner Company zurückgelegt. Mir ging es von Anfang an darum, die traditionellen Grenzen zwischen klassischem Ballett und modernem Tanz einzureißen. Dazu dienen die Choreografien von William Forsythe. Ich möchte vermeiden, dass man das Semperoper Ballett eine klassische oder eine moderne Company nennt.

Mir geht es darum, dass sie als zeitgenössisch im Sinne einer andauernden, heutigen Entwicklung gesehen wird. Es ist eine Reise, die ich gleichsam mit dem Publikum unternehme. »Impressing the Czar« ist nun die nächste Herausforderung.

Forsythe Ja, es geht mir ausschließlich um die Menschen, mit denen ich arbeite. Ich meine, dass die Eigenschaft, die ich in meinen Arbeitsbeziehungen aufrecht zu erhalten versuche, die Neugier gegenüber der anderen Person ist. Diese Eigenschaft mag die Gegebenheit der Situation betreffen, in der die Tänzer und ich uns vorfinden, die angefüllt ist mit unzähligen Variablen, welche unsere Wahrnehmung dessen verändern, woraus die Gegenwart zusammengesetzt ist. Man muss sich

dann fragen, ob man wirklich sein Gegenüber vollständig sieht und nicht seine Wahrnehmung durch eine Schablone von Erwartungen filtert. Neugierde ist ein sehr nützlicher Zustand für beide Seiten der Arbeitsbeziehung.

Somewhat closer to home, but no less exciting, was the trip to Weimar in the autumn of 2013 to present a joint programme with The Forsythe Company featuring diverse works by the master. Forsythe’s choreographies are the most popular »exports« of Dresden’s ballet company, whose dancers are widely recognised for their expertise in this repertoire.

And thus the Semperoper Ballett is thrilled to have the opportunity in the 2014 / 15 season to display its great qualities by performing »A William Forsythe Ballet Evening« at five different venues. From the dance festival »Fall for dance« in New York the company goes to the leading centre of contemporary dance in Austria, the Festspielhaus in St. Pölten and shortly after to the french centre of ballet, to Paris. Then in February 2015 comes a return visit to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, after which the dancers will make a brief stop-

over in Dresden before travelling on to Antwerp for another three performances.

There will certainly be a lot of new experiences to be discussed at the end of this tour regarding art, culture, people or places.

English The Semperoper Ballett has always been enthusiastically received at home, as confirmed by their appearances throughout Saxony, in Berlin or Heilbronn. Following its reformation in 2006 by Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin, featuring a new and more international repertoire, the ensemble has enjoyed an ever increasing influx of invitations from abroad. In only their third season, a group of dancers travelled across the Atlantic to appear for the first time on the American continent at the »Dance Salad Festival« in Houston.

This quickly led to an invitation to »Fall for Dance« in New York. The company has also travelled to Imatra in Finland and Spoleto in Italy, as well as to that cradle of classical dance, St. Petersburg, where they have displayed their brilliant skills in contemporary productions. At another guest appearance in Abu Dhabi, the Semperoper Ballett chose a suitably oriental programme (»La Bayadère«) to mir-

Semperoper Ballett und in Sankt Petersburg, der Wiege des klassischen Tanzes, bewies das Ensemble mit einer seiner zeitgenössischen Produktionen seine herausragende Qualität. Orientalisch geprägt – im Sinne des Programmes (»La Bayadère«) wie auch des Ortes – war das Gastspiel in Abu Dhabi. Naheliegender, aber deshalb nicht weniger spannend ging die Reise im Herbst 2013 nach Weimar, um dort gemeinsam mit The Forsythe Company einen kontrastreichen Abend mit Werken des Meisters zu zeigen. Die Werke Forsythes sind der meistgefragte »Exportartikel« des Dresdner Ballettensembles, ist es doch dafür bekannt, dass in diesem Repertoire eine seiner besonderen Stärken steckt.

Umso glücklicher schätzt sich deshalb das Semperoper Ballett, in der Saison 2014 / 15 gleich an fünf Gastspielorten mit »Ein William Forsythe Ballettabend« seine Qualitäten zeigen zu dürfen. Vom Festival »Fall for Dance« in New York geht es auf die bekannteste Bühne für zeitgenössischen Tanz in Österreich: das Festspielhaus St. Pölten und von dort ins französische Zentrum des Balletts, nach Paris. Im Februar 2015 wird das Reiseziel bereits zum zweiten Mal das Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona sein, um von dort aus, nach einem kurzen »Zwischenstopp« in Dresden, mit nochmals drei Vorstellungen in Antwerpen aufzutreten. Da wird es am Ende der Reisen sicherlich wieder viel zu erzählen geben: von Künstlerischem wie Kulturellem sowie von Menschen und Orten.

Englisch An homage to that most innovative living choreographer, William Forsythe, many of whose »classical« choreographies have become mainstays of the Semperoper Ballett’s repertoire. These include the four works presented by the company in diverse combinations on its international tours. The astonishingly dynamic »Enemy in the Figure« is certainly one of the choreographer’s most impressive works, in which the dancers are illuminated by a moving spotlight. Here Forsythe plays with audience perceptions. Similarly, in »Steptext« he subverts stage rituals and accepted structures. »Neue Suite«, specially put together and arranged for the Semperoper Ballett, is a series of pas de deux, which captivates through the highly musical interaction of the dance elements.

For »In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated« Forsythe has transformed traditional ballet figures by means of expansion and acceleration, creating an unexpected energy that is both breathtaking and graceful.

English Three innovative and influential choreographers from the world of contemporary ballet come together: Jiří Kylián, David Dawson and Ohad Naharin.

The work by Jiří Kylián from 1998 (which lends its name to the evening performance) plays with the dancer’s on-stage façade, with identity and gender relations.

The long-time Artistic Director of the Nederlands Dans Theater is the idol of many in the contemporary dance scene. Human fragility and an exploration of the seemingly unlimited range of movement of the body are at the heart of »The Grey Area«.

In this work from 2002, David Dawson dis-

plays his skill in creating atmospheric ballet which manages to break the restrictive bonds of classical dance. Ohad Naharin has been setting new standards with a fearless, sensual style of movement since 1990. For his work »Minus 16« the Semperoper Ballett has rehearsed Naharin’s »Gaga« technique.

durch Fantasie und Träume« beschrieb Jiří Kylián seine poetische Choreografie »Bella Figura«, die er einst für das Nederlands Dans Theater kreierte und die titelgebend für den Ballettabend ist. Mit David Dawsons »The Grey Area« folgt ein abstraktes, äußerst emotionales Werk des ehemaligen Hauschoreografen des Semperoper Ballett. Den fulminanten Abschluss bildet Ohad Naharins kraftvolle Choreografie »Minus 16« zu einer Musikmischung aus Dean Martin, Cha-Cha-Cha und traditioneller israelischer Musik, die das Publikum zum Mittanzen auffordert.

Romeo and Juliet Romeo und Julia

English Many composers have been inspired by this tragic love story of a young couple who get caught up in the machinations of two opposing parties. Perhaps the bestknown ballet version is that of Sergej Prokofiev, with choreographies by Leonid Lavrovski, John Cranko or John Neumeier. The Belgian choreographer Stijn Celis has already brought »Vertigo Maze«, »Noces« and his bitingly funny interpretation of »Cinderella« to the Semperoper.

With »Romeo and Juliet« he has created an innovative and fresh version of this tragic relationship that captures the emotions of the audience.

English Intimate and explosively physical: The Semperoper Ballett clearly illustrates its full emotional and technical capability with Richard Strauss’s »Tanzsuite«.

The internationally celebrated Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky has brought this wonderful composition, originally a rococo divertissement, to life in a filigree work through his unique neoclassical dance style and impeccable musicality. In contrast, »The Legend of Joseph«

by Stijn Celis, a regular collaborator with the Semperoper Ballett, focuses on one

part of the Old Testament story of Joseph.

The result is a visually stunning work with a contemporary flavor which explores desire and seduction. The audience is left both intoxicated and breathless.

The Nutcracker Der Nussknacker

English Tchaikovsky’s »The Nutcracker« is as much a part of Christmas as the famous Dresden Stollen. In their production, Aaron S. Watkin and Jason Beechey return to the original story, creating a fantastic and traditional fairytale set around a Dresden Christmas: On Christmas Eve Marie is given a nutcracker, which she immediately takes a liking to. Soon danger arrives in the form of a regiment of bellicose mice. Then the wooden figure seems to come to life, leading the battle

against the invading army. Together with her new guardian angel, the young girl sets off on a journey through the land of sweet dreams.

Swan Lake Schwanensee

English This work, featuring the enchanted swan princess and her swan maidens, is the archetypal classical ballet. The story of Odette and her beloved Prince Siegfried is one of true love and the battle of good against evil. Cast under a spell by the sorcerer Rotbart, Odette can only return to human form when she is sworn undying love. Desperate for the love of the prince, Rotbart foils Odette’s plans with a doppelgänger in the form of a black swan. Today it is hard for us to understand how this legendary ballet

could have been so poorly received at its premiere. Watkin’s version follows in the tradition of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s choreographic vision, that defined »Swan Lake« as the iconic ballet that it is today.

Doch Rotbart durchkreuzt ihre Absichten mit Odile, der schwarzen Doppelgängerin Odettes. Kaum vorstellbar, dass der Ballettklassiker bei der Uraufführung durchfiel. Erst die Choreografie von Lew Iwanow und Marius Petipa, an die sich auch Aaron Watkins Version anlehnt, ließ »Schwanensee« unvergesslich werden.

Nordic Lights

English The work of three contemporary Swedish choreographers is united in the atmospherically titled »Nordic Lights«.

In his intimate choreography, Pontus Lidberg consciously seeks to forge a close poetical relationship with the audience.

The bizarre, comedic action in Johan Inger’s choreography »Walking Mad« teeters on the edge of disaster, accompanied by the intoxicating music of Ravel’s celebrated »Bolero«. Direct confrontation and absurdity are also central to Alexander Ekman’s »Cacti«. In his self-referential work on the art of dance, the 16 dancers not only share the stage with the members

of a string quartet, but also – in a rather odd yet mesmerizing touch – a number of cacti.

Together these three brilliant artists, each with their own unique choreographic signature, confirm the amazing power of dance.

Internationales Tanzfestival Dresden

English For the very first time, the Semper­ oper Ballett together with Hellerau – European Centre of the Arts and in cooperation with the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden are organizing an International Dance Festival in Dresden at the end of the 2014 / 15 season. Running from 19 June to 11 July 2015, the aim of the festival is to present both classical and contemporary dance of the very highest level, giving local audiences the chance to compare and contrast a wide spectrum of diverse dance styles. Several of the world’s leading choreographers and companies will attend the festival such as The Forsythe Company, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker with her company Rosas and the Israeli Batsheva Dance Company along with its director, Ohad Naharin, to name only a few. The dancers of the Semperoper Ballett, acclaimed for their stylistic diversity and flexibility, will have a chance to display the full range of their artistry, whether in narrative ballets such as the

classic »Swan Lake«, Dawson’s »Tristan + Isolde« and Forsythe’s »Impressing the Czar« as well as through the concentrated clarity of modern dance in the ballet evening »Nordic Lights«. The festival will also feature a soirée performed by the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

English Dresden and its majestic historic center are home to a cultural heritage of international significance. Precious paintings, leading musical ensembles and imposing buildings from diverse eras attract several thousand visitors each year. One of the world’s most famous musical venues can also be found in this city on the Elbe – the Semperoper Dresden. Destroyed by the air raid on Dresden on February 13th, 1945, the Semperoper Dresden was ceremoniously reopened forty years later on February 13th, 1985.

It is an institution with an international

reputation, an outstanding ensemble and star guests from Germany and elsewhere.

This is also the home of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, founded in 1548

by Prince Moritz of Saxony as his court orchestra, and thus one of the world’s oldest orchestras. Steeped in musical tradition, the ensemble has been shaped by its many prominent directors: Heinrich Schütz and Carl Maria von Weber both worked here, while Richard Wagner called the Staatskapelle his »miraculous harp«.

Richard Strauss was also closely linked to the orchestra for almost seventy years:

nine of his operas saw their world premiere in Dresden, among them »Salome«, »Elektra« and »The Knight of the Rose«.

The Semperoper honored the composer in 2014 in a variety of ways in celebration of his 150th birthday.

Christian Thielemann is the Principal Conductor since 2012 and, in this capacity, directs symphonic concerts as well as musical theatre productions. Auch eine der berühmtesten Spielstätten der Welt hat in der Elbestadt ihren Sitz – die Semperoper Dresden. Beim Luftangriff auf Dresden am 13. Februar 1945 zerstört, konnte die Semperoper vierzig Jahre später, am 13.

Seit 2012 ist Christian Thielemann Chefdirigent der Staatskapelle und leitet in dieser Position Symphoniekonzerte ebenso wie Musiktheaterproduktionen. Der von Carl Maria von Weber 1817 gegründete und von 2009 bis 2014 von Pablo Assante geleitete Opernchor der Sächsischen Staatsoper ist ebenfalls durch Konzerte und CD-Produktionen über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus bekannt. Während der Intendanz von Prof. Dr. Ulrike Hessler etablierte sich außerdem eine weitere Sparte – die Semperoper Junge Szene. Sie öffnet die Semperoper seit 2010 auch für Kinder und Jugendliche und schließt sich den anderen Bereichen in ihrem Bestreben an, das Opernhaus fest in der Stadt Dresden zu verankern.

Dresdens Bedeutung als Tanzstadt und Wiege des modernen Tanzes wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts vor allem durch Mary Wigman und Gret Palucca begründet. In den zwanziger Jahren erlebte auch das Ballett in der Semperoper einen ersten Höhepunkt. Es folgten große Choreografien unter den Ballettdirektoren Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke und Vladimir Derevianko.

of Dr. Ulrike Hessler, the Young Scene, a further branch, established itself. This branch opens the opera house specifically to children and youths and is part of its efforts to successfully anchor the Semperoper within the city of Dresden.

In the 20th century, Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca were especially important in the establishment of Dresden’s reputation as a city of dance. The 1920s saw ballet at the Semperoper enjoy its first artistic flowering, to be followed by other great choreographies under artistic directors Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke and Vladimir Derevianko. Aaron S. Watkin became the director of the Semperoper Ballett in 2006.

His artistic vision is: Breaking down the borders that traditionally exist between classical and contemporary dance and redefining dance as a culmination of both.

Open Dress Rehearsal English The choreographer makes last corrections; a dancer has not managed a costume change fast enough; the stage suddenly plunges into darkness. The final rehearsals offer a chance to iron out such problems. In fact, it is often said that these things must happen in order for the dress rehearsal and premiere to run smoothly. Schools have the chance to see dancers and theatre staff at their daily work, and thus get a taste of the sometimes fraught – and always exciting – mood during rehearsals.

English Till today Marius Petipa is regarded as the most important choreographer in the history of classical ballet. He was the creator of such masterpieces as »The Sleeping Beauty«, »Swan Lake« and »The Nutcracker«. Together with »Monsieur Petipa«, dancers of the Semperoper Ballett will introduce the world of ballet to young audiences, all the way from pointe shoes to the current repertoire. Open Rehearsal in the Ballet Studio English This event offers dance-lovers an insight into the daily work of a professional ballet company. Introduced by the ballet masters, visitors can learn how individual scenes with dancers are rehearsed, and have to be corrected and repeated. The open rehearsals are a great introduction to the finished productions, so that visitors can review what they have learnt whilst enjoying the complete choreography in its final incarnation on the Semperoper stage.

Semperoper Ballett & Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden English The Apprentice Program enables up to six apprentices to gain practical experience with the Semperoper Ballett for a complete season while studying at the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden. The apprentices are involved in company performances, and benefit from a complete training program organized in conjunction with the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden. Offering a combination of performance experience and intensive training, the program is designed to facilitate young dancers’ integration into the professional world.

Deutsch Das Eleven-Programm bietet sechs jungen Tänzern die Möglichkeit, eine ganze Spielzeit lang praktische Erfahrungen mit dem Semperoper Ballett zu sammeln und zugleich an der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden zu studieren. Dabei sind die Eleven in die Vorstellungen der Company eingebunden und profitieren von einem vollständigen, in Verbindung mit der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden organisierten Trainingsprogramm. Durch die gebotene Kombination aus Berufserfahrung und intensivem Training soll das Programm den jungen Tänzern den Einstieg in die Profitanzwelt erleichtern.

Deutsch Bei dieser Veranstaltung bekommt das interessierte Publikum Einblicke in den Probenalltag des Balletts. Geleitet von den Ballettmeistern ist mitzuverfolgen, wie einzelne Szenen mit den Tänzern einstudiert, wie Teile korrigiert und wiederholt werden müssen und dass minutiös gearbeitet wird, um tänzerische Perfektion zu erreichen.
