Last season’s motto – »On the Move« – announced the intention to explore new dance venues throughout the city and broaden the repertoire. Now Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin will pursue this spirit of experimentation by tearing down traditional conceptions of dance. His current programme documents in impressive fashion a huge diversity of dance styles: From a new production of the classical »Nutcracker« via the neo-classical »Jewels« (finally to be presented in their entirety in a full-length evening programme) to the stylistically eclectic programme »Les Ballets Russes – Reloaded«. The latter will offer audiences a number of premieres, as will »An Evening with the Works of William Forsythe«, a programme dedicated to the work of ultimate exponent of modern dance, William Forsythe.

This represents a huge range of styles and works which the dancers must absorb both technically and emotionally, and between which they must be able to »switch«, an ability which the company has developed over many years. For the audience it represents a wonderful opportunity, and a challenge, to open their hearts and minds to new and unknown forms of dance alongside more familiar and established choreographies. To shatter barriers and dissolve traditional conceptions of art: At the Semperoper Ballett these are not empty words or mere visions, but rather an expression of jointly lived ideas, and an invitation to audiences to participate in something new… and leap over their own internal borders.

Was bereits letzte Spielzeit mit »On the Move« Motto war – die lokale Eroberung neuer Tanz-Räume in der Stadt und die programmatische Ausdehnung des Repertoires – findet nun seine Erweiterung: Um nichts weniger als um das Einreißen traditioneller Sichtweisen geht es dem Ballettdirektor Aaron S. Watkin. So dokumentiert sein aktuelles Programm unter anderem beeindruckend die große Bandbreite verschiedenster Tanzstile: von der Neuproduktion eines klassischen »Nussknackers« über die neoklassischen »Juwelen« – endlich sind sie vollständig als abendfüllendes Programm zu erleben, bis hin zu einem stilistisch gemischten Programm »Les Ballets Russes – Reloaded«, das genauso mit choreografischen Uraufführungen aufwartet wie »Ein William Forsythe Ballettabend«, ein Programm ausschließlich mit Werken des Vertreters des modernen Tanzes schlechthin, William Forsythe.

Breiter kann kaum die Spannweite sein, in denen die Tänzer technisch und emotional zu Hause sein müssen, um zwischen den Stilen und Werken »switchen« zu können – eine Fähigkeit, die sich die Company über die Jahre erarbeitet hat; etwas, was letztendlich auch Chance und Herausforderung für das Publikum ist, sich neben vertrauten und etablierten choreografischen Handschriften auch auf Neues und Unbekanntes einzulassen.

Grenzen und traditionelle Sichtweisen überwinden; das sind im Semperoper Ballett nicht nur Begriffe oder Visionen, sondern Ausdruck von gemeinsam gelebten Ideen und Einladung an das Publikum, daran teilzuhaben und auch eigene Grenzen zu überwinden.

Ich wünsche dem Semperoper Ballett eine erfolgreiche Spielzeit und weiterhin ein höchst kreatives Wirken.

Dear Ladies & Gentleman, As the initial chapter in the short life of the newly branded »Semperoper Ballett« comes to a close, an exciting new chapter is about to unfold. The first 5 years of our existence have been dedicated to building and defining our company as a unique entity and making our presence known both locally and nationally as one of the leading ballet companies in Germany.

I have been very fortunate to have a talented, consistent group of dedicated dancers in my ensemble, the pioneers of the Semperoper Ballett. These artists have diligently carved our identity into the dance scene as dynamic group of highly versatile world-class dancers with an all-encompassing repertoire.

I compare the next chapter in the life of our company to that of a relationship. As is normal, relationships grow and develop and a natural metamorphosis occurs. This change can bring feelings of sorrow and loss, but it also brings a wonderful feeling of excitement and new inspiration for the future and the unknown.

My primary goal now is to focus on our international presence by touring abroad. After two very successful tours last season to Gran Teatre de Liceu, Barcelona and New York City Centre, we have received several offers for tours to two other continents, in particular America and Asia, which we are working hard to realize over the next few seasons. Here at home I have planned a season with 6 premieres, including »Jewels« (Balanchine), a »Dresden Ballet Gala«, »The Nutcracker« (Watkin / Beechey), »Young Choreographers«, »An Evening with the Works of William Forsythe«, »Les Ballets Russes – Reloaded!« (Creations by Jiŕì Bubeníček (Faune), Jacopo Godani (Sacre) and including Stijn Celis’ »Noces« & George Balanchine’s »Apollo«).

I have planned 5 other existing productions, including 3 full-length classical ballets as well as a new mix from our existing modern repertoire to create our »Black Magic« programme (Touzeau / Ek / Godani). For our Youth Scene we will continue with more performances of the highly successful »Cinderella« by Stijn Celis. For the first time we will present a »Ballet Week« from September 22nd to October 1st 2011. This week will include lectures, open rehearsals and 4 different programmes of dance from our classical, neoclassical and modern repertoire. Our Dresden Gala evening will provide a fitting climax to the Ballet Week. I have invited directors, agents and critics from all over the world to enjoy an exciting week of dance with us with the objective of personally presenting my company to them.

Sehr geehrte Damen & Herren, während sich das erste Kapitel im noch kurzen Leben der neuen Marke »Semperoper Ballett« seinem Ende neigt, eröffnet sich ein spannendes neues Kapitel. Die ersten 5 Jahre unseres Bestehens waren dem Aufbau und der Definition unserer Company als einer einmaligen Einheit gewidmet.

Außerdem arbeiteten wir daran, unsere Präsenz als eine der führenden Ballett-Companys in Deutschland im In- und Ausland bekannt zu machen. Ich hatte das große Glück, eine talentierte, beständige Gruppe engagierter Tänzer in meinem Ensemble zu haben, die Pioniere des Semperoper Ballett. Diese Künstler haben als dynamische Gruppe höchst vielseitiger Weltklasse-Tänzer mit einem breitgefächerten Repertoire unsere Identität geformt.

Ich vergleiche das nächste Kapitel im Leben unserer Company mit einer Beziehung. Es ist ganz normal, dass Beziehungen wachsen und natürliche Metamorphosen stattfinden. Diese Veränderungen können Trauer und Verlustgefühle hervorrufen, aber auch das wunderbare Gefühl der Vorfreude und neue Inspiration für die Zukunft und das Unbekannte.

Mein oberstes Ziel ist nun, mich auf unsere internationale Präsenz zu konzentrieren, indem wir im Ausland auf Tournee gehen. Nach zwei sehr erfolgreichen Tourneen in der letzten Saison, die ins Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona und ins New York City Center führten, haben wir mehrere Angebote für Tourneen auf zwei anderen Kontinenten, vor allem in Amerika und Asien, bekommen, und wir arbeiten auf Hochtouren, um diese in den nächsten Jahren in die Tat umzusetzen. Hier zu Hause habe ich eine Saison mit sechs Premieren geplant, nämlich »Juwelen« (Balanchine), die »Dresdner Ballett-Gala«, »Der Nussknacker« (Watkin / Beechey), »Junge Choreografen«, »Ein William Forsythe Ballettabend« (Forsythe), »Les Ballets Russes – Reloaded« (Kreationen von Jiří Bubeníček (»Faune«), Jacopo Godani (»Sacre«) sowie Stijn Celis’ »Noces« und George Balanchines »Apollo«). Ich habe fünf andere bestehende Produktionen eingeplant, darunter drei klassische abendfüllende BallettAufführungen sowie eine neue Mischung aus unseren bestehenden modernen Produktionen, aus denen wir unser »Zaubernächte«-Programm bestreiten (Touzeau / Ek / Godani). Die Semperoper Junge Szene setzen wir mit weiteren Aufführungen unseres sehr erfolgreichen Stücks »Cinderella« von Stijn Celis fort. Zum ersten Mal präsentieren wir eine »Ballett-Woche,« vom 22. September bis zum 1. Oktober 2011. In dieser Woche wird es Vorlesungen, offene Proben und vier verschiedene Tanzprogramme aus unserem klassischen, neoklassischen und modernen Repertoire geben. Unser Dresdner Galaabend wird der krönende Abschluss der Ballett-Woche sein. Ich habe Regisseure, Agenten und Kritiker aus aller Welt eingeladen, mit uns diese spannende Woche des Tanzes zu genießen, mit dem Ziel ihnen meine Company persönlich vorzustellen.

As the story goes, George Balanchine first conceived of his idea for the world’s first full-length abstract ballet on a visit to a famous New York jeweller. ­These three distinct and autonomous pieces – the »Jewels« – are Balanchine’s tribute to the »Golden Age« of ballet as well as an exploration of the ­countries in which the choreographer had lived ­and which shaped his development: France ­(»Emeralds«), P r em i e r e America (»Rubies«) and Russia (»Diamonds«).

2011 With his »Emeralds«, Balanchine, who had, in August 27 th the 1920’s, belonged for a short time to the ­»Ballets Russes« company of brilliant impresario Sergei Diaghilev, celebrates a France of »elegance, society life and perfume«. To the music of two compositions by French composer Gabriel Fauré, »Pelléas et Mélisande« and »Shylock«, the lyrical choreographer conjures up the era of romantic ­ballet, the danse d’école and the Sylphides. Die in der letzten Spielzeit begonnene, nun jährlich stattfindende Reihe »Junge Choreografen« geht nach ihrem Erfolg in die zweite Runde. Tänzern des Ballettensembles wird die Möglichkeit gegeben, sich abseits ihres Alltags als Künstler auf der Bühne nun als Choreografen zu betätigen. Sie kreieren für Tänzerkollegen Stücke, die dann im öffentlichen Rahmen von »Junge Choreografen« zu erleben sein werden. Dies eröffnet den Tänzern die Möglichkeit, ihr Betätigungsfeld zu erweitern.

Dabei geht es darum, sich selbst auszutesten, aus sich heraus Bewegungen und Ausdrucksformen zu kreieren und diese vor allem dann den Tänzern zu vermitteln, welche die Choreografie ausführen. So sind höchst unterschiedliche Bewegungssprachen zu entdecken, und es ist auch mitzuerleben, welch grenzenlose Vielfalt an Themen zur künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung führt und in Tanz umgesetzt werden kann. Tänzer und Publikum sind gleichermaßen gefordert und treiben so die Kunst voran; und vielleicht ist jemand aus dem Semperoper Ballett zu entdecken, der heute am Anfang einer großen Karriere als Choreograf steht.

After the success it met during the preceding season, the »Young Choreographers« series, now to be held annually, is making its return for a second season. Company dancers will once again have the opportunity to exchange their daily onstage work for the discipline of choreography. They will create pieces to be performed in public by their colleagues, all under the auspices of the »Young Choreographers« project. The dancers are thereby given the chance to broaden the spectrum of their activities to encompass the creation of their own individual choreographies. The chief aim of this project, in addition to extending the young artists’ own abilities and exploring new forms of movement and expression, is to empower them to transmit their intentions to the dancers who are to perform the works. Audiences will discover highly diverse gestural vocabularies and experience the sheer limitless range of subjects that can be examined artistically and translated into dance. Both dancers and dance-lovers will be challenged in their preconceptions as the boundaries of dance are pushed to their limits; and perhaps a future star choreographer at the dawn of his or her new career will be discovered.

No ballet company so influenced the 20th-century intellectual world as did Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, with its signature conceptualization of dance, music and the fine arts as equal partners in a unified art form. N o T humb To the strains of »Dona nobis pacem« by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, Pascal Touzeau explores the vocabulary of human discourse in all its diversity and profundity. In the course of which, »No Thumb« dispences with a strict storyline in favour of a series of short, tableauesque scenes that fit together to form a whole, just like some sort of jigsaw puzzle.

Pascal Touzeau ergründet zum »Dona nobis pacem« des lettischen Komponisten Pēteris Vasks das Vokabular menschlicher Konversation in all seiner Vielfältigkeit und Tiefe. Dabei verzichtet »No Thumb« bewusst auf eine stringente Handlung zugunsten vieler kleiner, tableauartiger Szenen, die miteinander verbunden, wie in einem Puzzle, sich zu einem neuen Ganzen fügen.

S pa z io - T em po The Italian dancer and choreographer Jacopo ­Godani creates intense, powerful imagery characterised by a seemingly feather-like style. With »Spazio-Tempo«, created especially for the Semperoper Ballett in 2010, the multi-talented artist introduced himself to Semperoper audiences.

S he was black The work of choreographer Mats Ek, whether contemporary interpretations of the classics of narrative­ballet such as »Giselle« and »Sleeping Beauty«, or his abstract pieces such as »She Was Black«, all display an immense expressive force.

The son of choreographer Birgit Cullberg and an actor father, Ek devoted himself to dance at a relatively late age after working as a (marionette) theatre director. His choreographies deal with the excesses of human feelings and the straitjacket of social constraints. »She Was Black« from 1995 is intended as an exploration of the problems of life and cohabitation in a modern city. The result is a series of highly emotional scenes which – although without any clear narrative structure – describe familiar human conflicts. At the same time the work uses surreal elements to create a world of fantasy.

Die Choreografien Mats Eks, seien es seine sehr zeitbezogenen Bearbeitungen der Handlungsballett -Klassiker wie »Giselle« oder »Dornröschen«, seien es seine abstrakten Werke, zu denen »Sie war schwarz« zählt, überzeugen durch ihre ungeheure Ausdruckskraft. Ek, Sohn der Choreografin Birgit Cullberg und eines Schauspielers, begann erst spät mit dem Tanz, zuvor hatte er als (Figuren)-Theaterregisseur gearbeitet. Seine Choreografien erzählen von der Radikalität menschlicher Gefühle und von gesellschaftlichen Zwängen. So wollte er in »Sie war schwarz« (1995) das (Zusammen)Leben heutiger Stadtbewohner durch eine Lupe betrachten. Entstanden ist eine Szenenfolge, die – obwohl ohne nacherzählbare Handlung – hochemotional uns vertraute zwischenmenschliche Beziehungskämpfe schildert, gleichzeitig aber auch durch surreale Elemente eine Fantasiewelt schafft.

Wieland Müller-Haslinger To celebrate the coming-of-age of Prince Siegfried, the Dowager Princess organizes a ball in his honour. Her son should marry a suitable wife before assuming his rightful place on the throne. The evening before the planned celebrations, however, the prince discovers the meaning of true love.

While out hunting swans with his best friend, Benno, the two young men ­observe how the birds are transformed into swan maidens. Siegfried falls in love with one of these, the beautiful Odette. He intends to break the curse with which the evil wizard Rotbart has bound the maiden to himself by declaring an oath of eternal love. The next evening the wizard foils Siegfried’s plan. ­The young couple’s love seems doomed; but in the end Rotbart fails to destroy the bond of true love, and cannot separate those who are destined for one another.

18., 20., 25.mat.+eve. September & 21., 23. October 2011 Anlässlich der Volljährigkeit von Prinz Siegfried organisiert die verwitwete Fürstin einen Ball zu seinen Ehren: Ihr Sohn soll standesgemäß heiraten, und ihm soll die Krone übertragen werden.

Am Vorabend des Festes lernt der Prinz jedoch die wahre Liebe kennen – auf der Jagd nach Schwänen beobachten er und sein bester Freund Benno, wie sich die Vögel in Schwanenmädchen verwandeln.

In eines, es ist Odette, verliebt sich Siegfried, und er ist gewillt, diese durch seinen Schwur ewiger Liebe vom Fluch zu befreien, mit dem sie der böse ­Zauberer Baron von Rotbart an sich bindet. Am nächsten Abend auf dem Ball durchkreuzt dieser Siegfrieds Absichten. Doch schließlich, obwohl ihre Liebe dem Untergang geweiht zu sein scheint, vermag Rotbart das Band wahrer Liebe nicht zu zerreißen und die auf ewig füreinander Bestimmten zu trennen.

Princess Aurora’s baptism is being celebrated in the king’s palace. The fairies are to be the child’s godmothers, and they arrive offering good wishes and their blessings, each endowing the girl with one special virtue. Suddenly the wicked fairy Carabosse appears to ­utter a dreadful curse: on her 16th birthday Aurora will prick her finger on a spindle and fall dead. However, the good lilac fairy has not yet offered her gift, and she is able to weaken the curse. Now the child will not die, but only fall into a deep and long sleep, which only the kiss of true love has the power to break. All the kingdom’s efforts to protect the child are in vain, and the prophecy comes to pass: the needle prick, the sleep … and then the kiss which releases the princess from her slumbers.

Die Feen, die Patinnen des Kindes, treffen ein, bringen gute Wünsche dar und segnen das Mädchen mit je einer guten Gabe. Doch plötzlich erscheint die böse Fee Carabosse und spricht einen furchtbaren Fluch aus: Aurora werde sich an ihrem 16. Geburtstag an einer Spindel stechen und tot umfallen. Da greift die Fliederfee ein, die glücklicherweise ihren guten Wunsch noch nicht ausgesprochen hat: Ihr gelingt es, den Fluch so abzumildern, dass das Kind nicht sterben werde, sondern nur in einen tiefen, langen Schlaf falle, den nur der Kuss der wahren Liebe aufzuheben vermag. Alle im Reich vorgenommen Maßnahmen zum Schutz des Kindes erweisen sich als zwecklos, denn es geschieht genau wie vorausgesagt: der Stich, der Schlaf, aber auch das Erwachen, herbeigeführt durch den erlösenden Kuss …

»Just as ›Giselle‹ is ballet’s great tragedy, so ›Coppélia‹ is its great comedy« (G. Balanchine).

Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story »The Sandman«, the central figure of this ballet is a doll which comes to life.

When Swanilda accuses Franz of falling for the charms of Coppélia, the daughter of Doctor ­Coppélius, jealousy drives them apart. Neither ­realises that this »rival« for Franz’s affections is in fact a doll, and it requires some courage to uncover the deception. In creating his »Coppélia« in 1974, George Balanchine turned to the classical choreography of Marius Petipa (1884) while creating a third act for his modern version.

In the current ­production Roberta Guidi di Bagno has created a porcelain landscape featuring authentic decoration from the famous Meissen factory, thereby lending local flavour to the performance.

»So, wie ›Giselle‹ die große Tragödie des Balletts ist, so ist ›Coppélia‹ die große Ballettkomödie.« (George Balanchine) Diese basiert auf E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erzählung »Der Sandmann«, indem sie sich auf deren heitere Momente konzentriert. Als eines der erfolgreichsten komischen Ballette des 19. Jahrhunderts ist in »Coppélia« erstmals die Verlebendigung einer Puppe und damit die zeitlose Auseinandersetzung von Mensch vs. Maschine thematisiert.

Eifersucht schiebt sich zwischen Swanhilda und Franz, als sie ihrem Verlobten ein Interesse an Coppélia unterstellt, der Tochter des geheimnisvollen Doktor Coppélius. Dass es sich bei dieser »Konkurrentin« aber um eine Puppe handelt, weiß sie zunächst genauso wenig wie der tatsächlich in diesen Trug verliebte Franz. Wurden sie Teil eines Experiments? Um die Täuschung aufzudecken, bedarf es Mut und Neugierde, bis der Weg zum gemeinsamen Glück frei ist.

»Cinderella« is a much-loved character common to many European fairy tales, and one who has also long secured her place in the classical ballet repertoire. At the premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s »Cinderella« at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1945 it quickly became clear that the composer had created a work for the ages, one which even today has lost nothing of its charm and vivacity. Keeping a respectful distance to the traditional story, Stijn Celis’ contemporary version tells of a modern girl whose suffocating life in a dysfunctional family leads to alternating bouts of reality and dreams. Accompanied by the memories of her dead mother, she sets off on a journey to the world of love, finally meeting »her« prince. In his interpretation Celis portrays a touching voyage of human fulfilment and selfdiscovery.

Ob Charles Perraults »Cendrillon«, Ludwig Bechsteins »Aschenbrödel« oder auch »Aschenputtel«, niedergeschrieben von den Gebrüdern Grimm, stets handelt es sich um eine im europäischen Kulturraum weit verbreitete, ähnlich geformte Märchenfigur, die als »Cinderella« längst ihren festen Platz im Ballettrepertoire erobert hat. Mit der »Cinderella«-Uraufführung am Moskauer Bolschoi‑Theater im Jahre 1945 wurde deutlich, dass Sergej Prokofjew mit seiner bis heute nichts an Farbigkeit eingebüßt habenden Komposition genau den musikalischen Ton getroffen hatte, der dem fantastischen Inhalt entspricht. Mit Respekt, aber gebührendem Abstand zum Märchen, erzählt Stijn Celis in seiner inhaltlich wie choreografisch modernen Version die Geschichte eines Mädchens von heute, dessen eingeengtes, zum Teil von Unterdrückung geprägtes Leben in einer disfunktionalen Familie zwischen Realität und Traumphasen wechselt. In der Phase des Heranwachsens lernt Cinderella zwischen »Gut und Böse«, »unwahren und wahren« Gefühlen zu unterscheiden. Geleitet von den Erinnerungen an die verstorbene Mutter begibt sie sich auf die Entdeckungsreise in die Welt der Liebe und trifft schließlich auf »ihren« Prinzen. Mit seiner Version gewährt der Choreograf einfühlsam Einblicke in einen der aufregendsten Lebensabschnitte eines Menschen, das Erwachsenwerden, und zeichnet damit einen Weg der inneren Entfaltung und der Selbst-Erkenntnis.

Born in Canada, Aaron Sean Watkin graduated from The National Ballet School of Canada in 1988 winning the prestigious Erik Bruhn Award, awarded to the most promising student in the school. Watkin is experienced in a variety of different styles of dance including Cecchetti,Vaganova, Bournonville, Balanchine and the French and English styles. Watkin enjoyed a full career in dance beginning with leading classical companies including the National Ballet of Canada, the English National Ballet and the Het ­Nationale Ballet. After 7 years of classical repertoire, he was invited

by William Forsythe to become a Principal Dancer with the Ballet Frankfurt. Watkin always admired the works of Mr. Nacho Duato and in 2000 he joined his company, La Compañia Nacional de Danza de Nacho Duato. In June 2002 Watkin was appointed Associate Artistic Director to Víctor Ullate Ballet in Madrid. Watkin was a personal choreographic assistant to Mr. William Forsythe, in charge of setting and rehearsing his ballets on dance companies throughout the world. In 2005 he assisted Mr. David Dawson for his creation of »Reverence« for the Kirov Ballet and Mr. Johan Inger for his creation of »Negro con Flores« for the Cullberg Ballet. Watkin was a guest teacher to many of Europe’s leading dance companies and the Artistic Associate Director of The Loft Dance Studio in Brussels. Watkin was also the Artistic Associate Director of the annual »Dance For Life« AIDS benefit gala at the Cirque Royal Theatre in Brussels.

In 2006 Aaron S. Watkin became the Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett. In 2007 Aaron S. Watkin created his first full length ballet production »The Sleeping Beauty« followed by »La Bayadère« in 2008 and »Swan Lake« in 2009. This season 2011 / 2012, Watkin will create a new production of »The Nutcracker« together with the Rector of the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, Prof.

Aaron Sean Watkin wurde in Kanada geboren. Als einer der besten Schüler der National Ballet School of Canada wurde er 1988 mit dem renommierten Erik Bruhn Award ausgezeichnet. Er beherrscht unterschiedliche Tanzstile wie Cecchetti, Vaganova,­Bournonville, Balanchine sowie unterschiedliche englische und französische Stilarten. Seine Karriere als Tänzer begann er in namhaften Companies wie am National Ballet of Canada, English National Ballet und Het Nationale Ballet.

Nach sieben Jahren Tanz in klassischem Repertoire wurde er Erster Solist am Ballett Frankfurt unter William Forsythe. Seine Bewunderung für die Werke Nacho Duatos ließen ihn im Jahr 2000 zu dessen La Compañia Nacional de Danza de Nacho Duato wechseln. 2002 wurde er zum stellvertretenden künstlerischen Leiter des Víctor Ullate Ballet in Madrid ernannt. Als persönlicher choreografischer Assistent William Forsythes­war Aaron S. Watkin verantwortlich für die Einstudierung von dessen Choreografien weltweit.

Watkins professionelle Erfahrung, sein exzellentes Wissen über das klassische Ballett sowie seine Kenntnisse über zeitgenössische Arbeiten ließen ihn zu einem angesehenen Lehrer führender europäischer Companies avancieren.

Er hatte zudem die künstlerische Leitung des Loft Dance Studios in Brüssel inne und leitete als Künstlerischer Co-Direktor die jährlich stattfindende AIDS-Benefizgala »Dance For Life« im Cirque Royal, Brüssel.

Seit 2006 ist Aaron S. Watkin Ballettdirektor des Semperoper Ballett. 2007 choreografierte er mit »Dornröschen« sein erstes abendfüllendes Ballett, dem 2008 »La Bayadère« und 2009 »Schwanensee« folgten. Diese Spielzeit 2011/12 wird Aaron S. Watkin gemeinsam mit Prof. Jason Beechey, Rektor der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, eine Neuproduktion des »Nussknacker« schaffen.

Adi Luick was born in Stuttgart. After a commercial education and occupational activities, he studied musicology and history of art in Tübingen. During his studies, he was an apprentice in the departments of ballet dramaturgy and press and public relations at the Bavarian State Ballet and the State Opera ­Unter den Linden in Berlin. After completing his studies, he worked at the Linden Opera in Berlin in the artistic management office, for the ballet dramaturgy and supported tours of the opera to Paris, Madrid and Tokyo. Thereafter, he became assistant to the managing director for ballet and dramaturgy. He joined the Semperoper Dresden in 2000. Adi Luick was first working as a dramaturg for ballet and ­opera, before he became management assistant to ballet director Vladimir Derevianko. In 2006, he was appointed as Company Manager of the Semperoper Ballett under the artistic direction of Aaron S. Watkin.

Adi Luick wurde in Stuttgart geboren. Nach einer kaufmännischen Ausbildung und Tätigkeit studierte­er in Tübingen Musikwissenschaft und Kunstgeschichte. Während des Studiums hospitierte er am Bayerischen Staatsballett sowie an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin in den Bereichen Ballettdramaturgie und Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Nach Abschluss seines Studiums arbeitete er an der Lindenoper im Künstlerischen Betriebsbüro und in der Ballettdramaturgie und übernahm Gastspielbetreuungen für Paris, Madrid und Tokio. Daraufhin wurde er als Assistent der Ballettbetriebsdirektorin und -dramaturgin engagiert. An die Semperoper Dresden wechselte Adi Luick im Jahr 2000 zunächst als Dramaturg für Ballett und Oper, später war er Management-Assistent des Ballettdirektors Vladimir Derevianko. Seit 2006 ist er Ballettbetriebsdirektor des Semperoper Ballett unter Ballettdirektor Aaron S. Watkin.

Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden Dresden and its majestic historic centre are home to a cultural heritage of international significance. Precious paintings, leading musical ensembles and imposing buildings from diverse eras attract several thousand visitors each year. One of the world’s most famous musical venues can also be found in this city on the Elbe – the Semperoper Dresden, an institution with an international reputation, an outstanding ensemble and star guests from Germany and elsewhere. This is also the home of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, founded in 1548 by Prince Moritz of Saxony as his court orchestra, and thus one of the world’s oldest orchestras. Steeped in musical tradition, the ensemble has been shaped by its many prominent directors: Heinrich Schütz and Carl Maria von Weber both worked here, while Richard Wagner called the Staatskapelle his »miraculous harp«. Richard Strauss was also closely linked to the orchestra for almost seventy years. Christian Thielemann will be the Principal Conductor from 2012. The opera chorus, founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817, is well-known to audiences around the world through their many concerts and CD productions. Weber also fought to secure a permanent ballet company for the city. The 1920s saw ballet at the Semperoper enjoy its first artistic flowering, to be followed by other great choreo­ graphies under ballet directors Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke and Vladimir Derevianko. Aaron S. Watkin became director of the Semperoper Ballett in 2006. His artistic vision is to create a form of dance which comes directly from the heart, and which can speak directly to the heart. And the S ­ emperoper has even more to offer: operatic history­has been written here. This was where Richard Wagner presented the premieres of »Rienzi«, the »Flying Dutchman« and »Tannhäuser«. And the name of Richard Strauss is also eternally linked to the Semperoper.

Nine of his operas were premiered here, including »Salome«, »Der Rosenkavalier« and »Elektra«. Over the centuries, tradition and moderni­ty have gone hand in hand in the Semperoper.

After its destruction during the bombing of 13 February 1945, the opera house was later painstakingly reconstructed, finally opening on 13 February 1985. In 2010, the 25th anniversary of the »New Semperoper« was celebrated.

Auch eine der berühmtesten Spielstätten der Welt hat in der Elbestadt ihren Sitz – die Semperoper Dresden ist ein Haus von Weltruf mit einem Ensemble von Rang und internationalen Gästen. Hier spielt die Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, 1548 durch Kurfürst Moritz von Sachsen als Hoforchester gegründet und damit eines der ältesten und traditionsreichsten Orchester der Welt. Bedeutende Kapellmeister haben ihre Geschichte geprägt, darunter Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber und Richard Wagner, der das Orchester als seine »Wunder­harfe« bezeichnete. Richard Strauss war der Staatskapelle fast siebzig Jahre lang freundschaftlich verbunden. Ihr nächster Chefdirigent ist Christian Thielemann ab 2012. Der von Carl Maria von Weber 1817 gegründete Opernchor ist ebenfalls durch Konzerte und CDProduktionen über die Grenzen Deutschlands hinaus bekannt.

Weber war es auch, der sich für ein fest engagiertes Ballettensemble in Dresden engagierte. In den zwanziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts erlebte das Ballett in der Semperoper einen ersten Höhepunkt. Es folgten große Choreografien unter den Ballettdirektoren Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke und Vladimir Derevianko. Seit 2006 / 07 ist Aaron S. Watkin Ballettdirektor des Semperoper Ballett. Seine künstlerische Vision: Tanz zu schaffen, der vom Herzen kommt und zum Herzen spricht.

Die Semperoper hat noch mehr zu bieten – hier wurde Operngeschichte geschrieben: Richard Wagner konnte hier »Rienzi«, den »Fliegenden Holländer« und »Tannhäuser« zur Uraufführung bringen. Untrennbar ist auch die Verbindung zu Richard Strauss. Neun seiner Opern kamen hier zum ersten Mal auf die Bühne, darunter »Salome«, »Der Rosenkavalier« und »Elektra«. Tradition und Moderne gehen seit Jahrhunderten Hand in Hand. Beim Luftangriff auf Dresden am 13. Februar 1945 zerstört, konnte die Semperoper 40 Jahre später, am 13. Februar 1985 feierlich wiedereröffnet werden.­2010 wurde das 25-jährige Jubiläum der n ­ euen Semperoper gefeiert.

This event offers dance-lovers an insight into the daily work of a professional ballet company, from classical training to rehearsals.

Introduced by the ballet masters, visitors can learn how individual scenes with dancers are rehearsed, and the reasons why some elements have to be corrected and repeated.

See for yourself the painstaking work required to achieve on-stage perfection, the intense concen­tration and high artistic skills continually demanded of the dancers, as well as the fun which all those involved experience during the rehearsal process. The open rehearsals are a great introduction to the finished productions, so that visitors can review what they have learnt whilst enjoying the complete choreography in its final incarnation on the Semperoper stage.

O p en D ress R ehearsal The choreographer uses the last opportunity to make some corrections; a dancer has not managed a costume change fast enough and misses her entry; the stage suddenly plunges into darkness. The final rehearsals offer a chance to iron out such problems. In fact, it is often said that these things must happen in order for the dress rehearsal and premiere to run smoothly. Visitors to the Semperoper have the chance to see dancers and theatre staff at their daily work, and thus get a taste of the sometimes fraught – and always exciting – mood during rehearsals.

Der Choreograf nutzt die letzte Gelegenheit, Korrekturen zu machen, ein Tänzer hat den Kostümwechsel nicht schnell genug geschafft und kommt zu spät zum Auftritt, die Bühne ist auf einmal dunkel – all dies kann in einer Hauptprobe passieren, mehr noch, muss sogar passieren, damit ein paar Tage später Generalprobe und Premiere fehlerfrei verlaufen. Besucher von Hauptproben haben so die Möglichkeit, Künstler und Theaterschaffende bei der Arbeit zu erleben und die aufgeregte Endprobenstimmung am eigenen Leib zu spüren.

Till today Marius Petipa is regarded as the most important choreographer in the history of classical ballet. He was the creator of such masterpieces as »Sleeping Beauty«, »Swan Lake« and »The Nutcracker«. Together with »Monsieur Petipa«, dancers of the Semperoper Ballett will introduce the world of ballet to young audiences, all the way from pointe shoes to the current repertoire. Created in 2006, the Apprentice Programme enables up to 12 apprentices to gain practical experience with the Semperoper Ballett for a complete season while studying at the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

The apprentices are involved in company performances, and benefit from a complete training programme organised in conjunction with the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

Offering a combination of performance experience and intensive training, the programme is designed to facilitate young dancers’ integration into the professional world.

Working with the Faculties of both the company and the school, the apprentices will benefit not only from specially designed classes, but also from workshops to learn the company repertoire, personal coaching and mentoring, as well as classes in additional subjects such as contemporary dance, improvisation, pointe work, pas de deux and partnering, theory classes with themes relevant to the content of the programme, as well as tutoring from both the company and the school, thus providing a well rounded education and intensive artistic guidance.

The apprentices participate in the performances and activities of the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden, and may receive special coaching for competitions or similar events as the Rector or Ballet Director sees fit.

The programme is a joint venture between Semperoper Ballett and the Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

11. S eptember 2 011 Open Door Day

Bei dieser Veranstaltung bekommt das interes­sierte Publikum Einblicke in den Probenalltag des Balletts - vom klassischen Training bis hin zu szenischen Proben. Geleitet von den Ballettmeistern ist mitzuverfolgen, wie einzelne Szenen mit den Tänzern einstudiert, wie und auch aus welchen Gründen Teile korrigiert und wiederholt werden müssen und dass minutiös gearbeitet wird, um tänzerische Perfektion zu erreichen. Es ist zu ­erleben, welch hohe Konzentration, künstlerisches Leistungsvermögen immer wieder abverlangt wird, welchen Spaß letztendlich aber auch die Arbeit im Ballettsaal allen Beteiligten macht. Die öffentlichen Proben haben einen direkten Bezug zu in nächster Zukunft stattfindenden Ballettvorstellungen, so dass die Zuschauer das Gesehene kurze Zeit später bei einer Aufführung des Semperoper Ballett wiederfinden und im kompletten Zusammen­ hang ­einer vollständigen Choreografie entdecken ­können.

Das 2006 ins Leben gerufene Eleven-Programm bietet zwölf jungen Tänzern die Möglichkeit, eine ganze­Spielzeit lang praktische Erfahrungen mit dem Semperoper Ballett zu sammeln und zugleich an der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden zu studieren.

Dabei sind die Eleven in die Vorstellungen der Company eingebunden und profitieren von einem vollständigen, in Verbindung mit der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden organisierten Trainingsprogramm.

Durch die gebotene Kombination aus Berufserfahrung und intensivem Training soll das Programm den jungen Tänzern den Einstieg in die Profitanzwelt erleichtern.

Sowohl in der Company als auch an der Schule profitieren die Eleven von eigens auf sie zugeschnittenen Kursen, von Workshops mit Bezug auf das Repertoire sowie von Coachings, Beratungen und von Kursen in weiteren Fächern, wie Zeitgenössischem Tanz, Improvisation, Point Work, Pas de deux und Partnering. Zudem sind Theorieunterricht zu Inhalten des Programms sowie die Einrichtung einer Tutorenstelle sowohl in der Company als auch an der Palucca Schule vorgesehen, um den Eleven eine abgerundete Ausbildung mitzugeben und sie intensiv künstlerisch betreuen zu können.

Die Eleven beteiligen sich auch an Vorstellungen und Aktivitäten der Palucca Schule und können speziell auf Wettbewerbe oder ähnliches vorbereitet werden, wenn der Rektor bzw. der Ballettdirektor dies für angebracht halten.

Das Elevenprogramm ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Semperoper Ballett und der Palucca Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

Marius Petipa ist bis heute einer der wichtigsten Choreografen des Balletts, Schöpfer von Meisterwerken wie »Der Nussknacker« »Schwanensee«, und »Dornröschen«. Tänzer des Semperoper Ballett werden gemeinsam mit »Monsieur Petipa« in die Welt des Balletts einführen – vom Spitzenschuh bis zum ­aktuellen Repertoire.
