PRE-GROWN GREEN ROOFS

Green roofs come in various forms. Sempergreen specialises in pre-cultivated extensive and semi-intensive green roofs. Extensive roofs are light, low-maintenance and blend in nicely with the natural environment - with Sedum being a popular choice. WHY IS SEDUM SO WELL-SUITED FOR EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOFS?

There are several reasons why Sedum is an excellent choice for extensive green roofs:

• Root System: Sedum has shallow roots, making it ideal for the thin substrate layer of an extensive green roof.

• Drought Resistance: Sedum is highly adaptable and can survive dry periods when other plant species would wither. It has the unique ability to recover quickly as soon as moisture becomes available again.

• Low Maintenance: Compared to other plant species, Sedum requires minimal water and upkeep.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF SEMPERGREEN GREEN ROOFS

Our extensive green roofs are lightweight, lowmaintenance, and suitable for roof slopes from 0 to 45 degrees. The substrate layer ranges from 6 to 15 cm, and the total weight varies from 40 to 150 kg/m² depending on the type of vegetation. A standard Sedum roof weighs around 30 kg/m². For those seeking more variety, a combination of Sedum and herbs is available at up to 150 kg/m².

INSTANT GREEN RESULTS WITH SEMPERGREEN VEGETATION BLANKETS

Planting a green roof with plugs, seeds or cuttings requires a lot of maintenance, especially in the first years. It can take years before the vegetation fully covers the roof. Sempergreen’s pre-grown vegetation mats deliver instant green coverage – with minimal maintenance.

TRADITIONAL SEDUM ROOFS

A Traditional Sedum Roof from Sempergreen is a green roof system that can be used on a flat or slightly pitched roof. The build-up of this type of Sedum roof includes a protective cover, drainage, roof garden substrate and a Sempergreen Sedum-mix blanket with 6 to 8 different Sedum species. The roof garden substrate is produced in accordance with FLL guidelines. The substrate layer contains soil life and provides shelter for insects. In this light but nutritious substrate the Sedum plants can develop roots well, so the plants grow and stay strong after installation. This, and the fact that strong Sedum species are used, makes a Traditional Sedum Roof very low maintenance. The Traditional Sedum Roof is available in three different systems, for 0-5, 5-15 and 15-20 degree roof pitches. We offer these different build-ups so that the plants can flourish on each specific roof pitch with the most suitable system layers.

LIGHTWEIGHT SEDUM ROOFS

A Lightweight Sedum Roof from Sempergreen is a green roof system for roofs with limited loadbearing capacity. It consists of a drainage layer, a substrate roll, and a Sempergreen Sedummix blanket. Suitable for roofs up to 20 degrees, it can be used on structures like carports and distribution centers.

The substrate roll has a capillary function, allowing rainwater to be efficiently absorbed and retained. This improves water management and reduces the strain on drainage systems. Additionally, the Sedum plants help purify the air and enhance biodiversity. In this way, the Lightweight Sedum Roof offers a sustainable solution for easily greening buildings.

SEMPERGREEN‘S LIGHTWEIGHT GREEN ROOF SYSTEMS

The Lightweight Sedum Roof is available in three different systems, for 0-5, 5-15 and 15-20 degree roof pitches. We offer these different build-ups so that the plants can flourish on each specific roof pitch with the most suitable system layers. A 40mm thick substrate roll is supplied as standard for this system. For roof slopes between 0 and 5 degrees, a 20 mm version is also available. Then, the maximum saturated weight of the system is 40 kg/m².

EASY-TO-LAY SEDUM TRAYS

Sempergreen’s Sedum trays are ready-to-use cassettes made from recycled plastic, filled with a special substrate (a type of soil designed for optimal plant growth), and covered with a mix of six to eight different types of Sedum plants. A complete package in one!

The trays are compact and easy to handle. Simply place them side by side on the roof, and you’re done! Super quick and super clean, making them easy to transport—even through a house. Sedum trays are perfect for hard-to-reach roofs, as well as for carports, garages, verandas, and garden sheds.

STEEPLY PITCHED SEDUM ROOFS

The Pitched Green Roof from Sempergreen is a sustainable solution for sloped roofs in residential construction and renovation. It helps regulate temperature, enhances biodiversity, and is available in a vapour-permeable version. Suitable for both new builds and renovations, it offers an ecofriendly alternative to traditional roofing.

Sempergreen offers three systems for pitched roofs, suitable for slopes ranging from 20 to 45 degrees. These systems ensure stability, prevent vegetation shifting, and can even replace traditional roof tiles.

SEMPERGREEN‘S STEEPLY PITCHED GREEN ROOF SYSTEMS

Sempergreen’s pitched green roof systems are available for different roof pitch angles, from 20 to 45 degrees. Fall protection and irrigation are advised to ensure the safety and appropriate maintenance of the system.

BIODIVERSE GREEN ROOFS

The biodiversity in Europe is rapidly declining. As humans, we depend on healthy ecosystems. These cannot exist without high biodiversity. This is because healthy ecosystems provide necessities such as clean air, drinking water and food. The loss of biodiversity is partly due to the reduction and fragmentation of natural habitats by construction. It is therefore of great importance to green cities, villages and industrial areas and build nature-inclusive properties. This will give local biodiversity a boost.

The Biodiverse Green Roof consists of a drainage layer and a layer of intensive roof garden substrate of at least 120 mm thick, covered with a flower-filled Sempergreen Biodiverse blanket. This Biodiverse blanket Bees & Butterflies is cultivated with a mix of more than 20 plants attractive to bees, butterflies and other insects.

In addition to the Biodiverse Green Roof, Sempergreen also offers a lightweight variant: the Lightweight Biodiverse Green Roof. These systems can be used on roofs with a roof pitch of up to 15 or even 20 degrees.

For users, the efficiency of solar panels is very important. With a Solar Green Roof, you kill two birds with one stone: sustainable energy generation and greening your building! Moreover, the combination of a green roof under the solar panels can increase the yield of the solar panels by up to 40%. Harmony between green and energy, that’s a green effect!

Sempergreen offers two types of solar on green roofs: a ballasted system with Sedum or Biodiverse plants for roofs with higher load-bearing capacity, and a lightweight system with vertical bifacial solar panels, ideal for roofs with limited load capacity.

BLUE-GREEN ROOFS

Due to climate change, we increasingly face extreme weather events where a lot of rain falls within a short period of time. However, our sewers can’t handle this, leading to more frequent street flooding during and after heavy rain. Blue-green roofs, such as Detention and Retention Roofs, are an ideal solution to combat this water problem. Let’s collect rainwater where it falls first; on the roof!

Sempergreen’s blue-green roofs are suitable for larger roofs, from 50 m2. For new construction projects the Retention Roof is very suitable. Existing and renovated roofs can be transformed into water roofs with the Detention Roof system. Based on a water calculation we can determine exactly what the Detention or Retention Roof can do for your project.

SUBSTRATE ROLL

The Sempergreen Substrate Roll is a lightweight alternative to traditional green roof substrates, made from needle-punched mineral wool. Its unique fibre structure gives it exceptional waterabsorbing capacity—up to eight times its own weight, even after drying out—making it an ideal foundation for extensive green roofs where weight and water retention are key. Available in 20 mm and 40 mm thicknesses.

BALLOON LEAF GUARD

A balloon leaf guard is placed in a recessed roof outlet in a flat roof. The stainless steel leaf guard prevents gravel entering the downpipe. If also prevents leaves and other debris from entering the drain. ø 80-100 mm.

LEAF TRAP

The leaf trap is made from rigid and durable LDPE material, designed to withstand all weather conditions. It prevents leaves and other debris from entering the roof drainage system, helping to maintain optimal water flow. Each leaf trap is supplied individually and can be easily attached to the rainwater outlet using a simple clamp mechanism. To ensure proper drainage, the leaf trap should be cleaned regularly during roof maintenance.

SEDUM CONDITIONER

Sedum Conditioner is a controlled-release NPK fertiliser. The coating ensures a gradual and controlled release of the nutrients. The main components are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) (16-3-20). Besides the NPK-ratio Sedum Conditioner also includes magnesium and trace elements. Boosting Sedum growth for up to 9 months.

FILTER FLEECE

INTRODUCING SEMPERGREENWALL

FLEXIPANEL

The Flexipanel is the building block of the SemperGreenwall. The Flexipanel was designed around the plants. Each Flexipanel has a duct at the top for the drip lines which deliver water and nutrients to the plants.

Unlike many other systems, Flexipanels allow full rooting: the plants can grow through the membrane and the growth medium in the Flexipanel. This allows the roots to grow much longer than green wall systems that only allow the roots to grow inside the enclosure. The result is bigger, fuller plants and more flowers.

PLANT CARE SYSTEM

The Plant Care System of a SemperGreenwall is unique. It is an elaborate system, that ensures each plant’s roots to roam freely, micro irrigates the plants to save water and fertilizer and protects the roots from frost and heat. Herewith creating a continuous, monolithic vertical garden with lush, happy plants.

Thanks to the Plant Care System, plant loss is reduced to a minimum and replacement is unnecessary. Maintenance of a SemperGreenwall therefore only consists of pruning.

PLANT DESIGN

REUSE OF RAINWATER

To keep the water consumption of a SemperGreenwall as low as possible, without compromising the health of the plants, Sempergreen has developed a special solution to recycle rainwater for the irrigation of the SemperGreenwall. If rainwater reuse is chosen, there will be an extra supply from an additional rainwater storage tank. The system is regulated so that rainwater from the storage tank is used first, and when the tank is empty, the system switches to tap water. This is a continuous interplay between the two supplies.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

OF YOUR SEMPERGREENWALL

Periodic maintenance is essential to keep your SemperGreenwall looking great all year round. The maintenance consists of several maintenance visits, which include caring for the plants and the checking and testing of the Plant Care System. The gutter and drains are checked during each maintenance visit, and visual inspections are carried out periodically to examine the condition of the plant wall and map out the actions required for the next maintenance visit. The irrigation system is also serviced and nutrients are topped up regularly. The outdoor green wall irrigation programme is adapted to the different seasons.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

The SemperGreenwall is a modular living wall system made of pre-cultivated Flexipanels and finished with a gutter and a frame. This solution is suitable for both straight and curved walls. The Flexipanels have a TPO back side. Because the TPO protrudes on the top and right side, it always overlaps with the adjacent or above panel. This creates a closed and water-resistant rear wall after installation. SemperGreenwall systems have a maximum saturated weight of 45 kg/m2

GROUND COVER

Planting individual ground cover plants is labour-intensive and time-consuming. This also requires a great deal of maintenance, such as replacing dead plants, weeding and hoeing. All in all an expensive process. The ready-to-lay Sempergreen Sedum blankets offer the solution. They are fully grown, require little maintenance and are very versatile. So you can create a vegetated slope, an attractive embankment or beautiful green park in less than no time. We are happy to advise you about the best application for your project.

RESIDENTIAL TOWER KNOKKE, BELGIUM

The Helden (Hero) Tower in Knokke-Heist is a striking architectural beacon on the Belgian coast, with a beautiful 400m2 Sempergreen green roof being one of the eye-catchers. With a height of almost 70 metres, the Heldentoren is at once the tallest building in Knokke-Heist and one of the tallest towers on the Belgian coast. Designed by architect Neutelings Riedijk, the tower forms an integral part of the redevelopment of this iconic location, on the site of the former Grand Hotel - Casino Kursaal. The project consists of a slender 20-storey residential tower, a 5-storey flat tower and a restaurant pavilion and is located on the promenade next to Heldenplein.

LØREN SCHOOL OSLO, NORWAY

Løren School in Oslo has taken a major step toward its sustainability mission by combining an existing green roof with innovative solar energy technology. The challenge was integrating solar panels without compromising the roof’s biodiversity or load-bearing capacity. Thanks to the collaboration between Sempergreen and Over Easy Solar, the ideal solution was found. By using lightweight vertical PV units on the existing Sedum roof, the roof’s energy output increased significantly. This renovation project serves as an inspiring model for urban sustainability.

RESIDENTIAL AREA

UDEN, THE NETHERLANDS

A new benchmark in future-proof building, focused on a green and liveable environment. That is ‘De Bogerd’ new-build project in Uden. This project of housing association Area combines a Sempergreen green roof system with solar panels and is an excellent example of bio-based construction using wood and other natural materials.

All homes are equipped with Sempergreen’s vapour-permeable sloping green roof system, combined with solar panels. In this system, the standard roof tile is replaced by a Green Roof Scale, which results in a nice cost saving. This makes De Bogerd unique in the social rental sector in the Netherlands. Fully reusable and recyclable, the green roof system contributes to a pleasant living environment for residents and a green and sustainable future for the residential area.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHAUENSTEIN, GERMANY

In September 2023, Sempergreen, in cooperation with Browatech, installed Germany’s very first Detention Roof at Schauenstein primary school in Bavaria. This project, part of a Sponge City initiative, provides an innovative solution for water management on sloped roofs. The Detention Roof concept, developed by Sempergreen in cooperation with Browatech, transforms traditional green roofs into a tool for effective rainwater management. By slowly draining rainwater, this water-storing green roof system helps minimise flooding and improves urban water management.

BMW SERVICE CENTER BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC

At the new BMW service center in Brno, Czech Republic, a 1,435 m² green roof was installed right in the middle of winter. Despite the snow, the Sempergreen vegetation blankets performed flawlessly. Thanks to their pregrown nature, the Sedum mats are resilient and thrive in extreme conditions. As seen in summer photos and video, the roof flourished with lush greenery and vibrant blooms.

The entire installation took only seven days. Flat roofs are perfect for green roofs, using a layered system: drainage with filter fleece, extensive substrate, and pre-grown vegetation blankets. These Sedum-mix blankets— planted with 6 to 8 types of Sedum—are easy to roll out and offer 95% coverage upon delivery, guaranteeing an instant-green result.

GREEN TRAMWAY BARCELONA, SPAIN

With 8,000 m² of greenery along a 2 km tram line between Plaça de Les Glòries and Passeig Verdaguer, Barcelona redefines urban mobility. This groundbreaking project merges transport and nature, creating an ecological showcase powered by Sempergreen’s instant-green ground cover.

The city aimed to boost biodiversity, drastically reduce water use—by up to 80% compared to traditional grass—and mitigate flooding through excellent water retention. The green tram route also helps lower CO₂ emissions and combats the urban heat island effect, contributing to a cooler, healthier city. Beyond its environmental impact, the design integrates beautifully into Barcelona’s landscape, aligning perfectly with the city’s sustainable vision. This project proves that infrastructure can be both functional and future-proof, setting a new global benchmark for climate-conscious urban development.

THE GREEN DIGITAL DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY

At a prominent location along the busy S-Bahn station Am Wehrhahn in the centre of Düsseldorf, you can now endulge yourself in a green environment. Following an earlier cooperation with blowUP media Germany, experts in large-format outdoor advertising, Sempergreen has now installed a second SemperGreenwall for blowUP media Germany around an LED video wall here on behalf of LEDCON Systems GmbH. This renovation project, called “The Green Digital”, consists of a huge 100 m² digital screen powered by solar energy. The screen is framed by a flourishing green facade of no less than 180m2 in size. This facade renovation literally provides relief to passers-by at this busy urban traffic junction and the resulting air pollution.

THEATRE ON THE PARADE DEN BOSCH, NETHERLANDS

Architect NOAHH faced a challenging task: designing the renovation of the Theater on the Parade in the Dutch city of Den Bosch. The new theatre had to be built on the historical foundations of the old building. Thanks to various spatial inventions, the new Theater on the Parade makes smart use of the limited space.

The result is a theatre of the future; a multifunctional and irresistible cultural hub. This extrovert building does not stop at the façade, but extends into the public spaces and moves with its users. An inviting theatre café and a botanical foyer transparently connect the interior with the Parade. For the design of the botanical foyer, NOAHH was inspired by the historic Casino garden, dating from 1860. They managed to capture this feeling through the application of a lush SemperGreenwall Indoor.

WELLNESS HOTEL AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

On the edge of Amsterdam’s largest park, the remodelled Hotel & Wellness Zuiver has extended the green atmosphere to its building with a 560 m² SemperGreenwall. The design of the recently renovated and expanded hotel was inspired by the experience of the four seasons in the surrounding forest ‘Amsterdamse Bos’. While the rooms are designed according to beautiful spring, summer, autumn and winter-themes, the living walls will also represent every season with a different look. Of the over 50.000 plants living in the façade, many are winter-hardy or summer bloomers, ensuring a green but varying appearance year-round.

MCDONALD’S DISNEY WORLD ORLANDO, USA

At Walt Disney World in Orlando, McDonald’s has opened a pioneering flagship restaurant aiming to be the world’s first energyneutral fast food location. Nearly 185 m² of SemperGreenwalls contribute to cleaner air, increased biodiversity, and reduced heat stress.

The plant mix, tailored to Orlando’s subtropical climate, stays green year-round thanks to Sempergreen’s smart Plant Care System.

The building, designed with Ross Barney Architects and CPH, also features 1,000 solar panels and serves as a learning hub for sustainable solutions—supporting McDonald’s global ‘Scale for Good’ program. Visitors can interact with green features like energygenerating bikes and educational games, blending sustainability with experience.
