This edition of Semper is shorter than usual.

So much has happened in the past few weeks, and we had the option to delay and add less relevant content, or print now with a clear message. We chose the latter.

I never thought I’d call any period of time in my role as Semper editor ‘unenviable’. But with the recent bout of protests on campus, it seems as though readers are patiently waiting for this publication for yet another angle, possibly a scoop, and maybe even some evidence that proves one side was right and the other side was wrong.

Truth be told, I don’t suspect we’ll ever know who the violent agitators were, or which side they came from. I doubt they were even students. The Hong Kong side blames the Mainland side for the violence, and the Mainland side accuses the Hong Kong side of a false flag operation designed to gather sympathy. The same happens with the Lennon Walls.

It’s senseless for the Semper team to wade into this mess and try to make sense of it when each student has likely made up their mind already. And we don’t want to incite vigilanteism, if we can help it.

But what I can say from my experience talking to both sides is this: each side is home to friendly international students who have put a lot of time and thought into these issues. And further, this is true of the vast majority of people involved in the protests.

So think less about the people tearing down post-its and starting fights, and think more about the guy who approached the vandals to plead for peaceful action. Think of the people who ran into the fray on Market Day to tell people to “calm down”. Those are the clear heroes in this messy few weeks.

It would be remiss of me to pass up this opportunity to point out who the real culprits are, though. In my opinion, a more responsible University, one that puts student welfare before profit, would have helped us all become more aware and more sensitive towards these views before they ever became a flash point in Australian and international politics.

Apparently UQ is not that uni.

What will the Student Hub do to the student experience?

In the spirit of Jesus Week, here’s a little quote from the Bible: “A man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry” (Ecclesisastes 8:15). And when considering the UQ Union Complex, and its array of food outlets and two bars, you have plenty of opportunities to eat and to drink. But what opportunity does a student have to be merry?

Well, since the mid-80s, not many. Once upon a time, the building now known for offering counselling services was a fully student-run recreational centre. It was home to ping pong and pool tables, much like the Red Room now, but you could get in before your birthday in your first year.

As well as this, students used meeting spaces inside to plan events (including, shock horror, protests and demonstrations). I want to explain to you why I think handing that particular building over to the University administration to provide counselling was a bad decision that should be reversed.

Let’s get one thing straight before we start: Student Services do some important work for people experiencing problems with their mental health. If you’re experiencing some mental health difficulties, and you’re looking for a safe space to talk to someone for an hour, going to Student Services is often a good start.

But let’s get something else straight as well. The Union Complex has always been a hub for student activism. The very complex itself was built by students in the 60s, and has long stood as a testament to student autonomy.

Let’s look at last Friday, when Hong Kong students began a demonstration on the wall of Student Services’ counselling building over the top of the instagram-bait mural on its front. The Director of Student Affairs, Andrew Lee, commented at the time that “all students should feel comfortable accessing counselling services”, and for that reason he fixed himself to finding a different space for the demonstration. But it warrants remarking that this problem would never have arisen if Student Services had been located elsewhere.

Consider, for instance, that a plaque overlooks the area where the demonstration was occurring dedicating the space as the “Student Forum”. Historically, the student union plaza has always been a space for discussing major issues of the day. It’s the same area where people rallied against South Africa’s Springbok tour in 1971. It should be the same area where people discuss the major issues of our times.

I’ll note here that it doesn’t matter what side of the Hong Kong/Mainland China dispute you find yourself on, this issue affects everyone. The Student Forum ought to be a space for people to discuss issues, with the full backing of an autonomous student union, not at the whim of the Director of Student Affairs.

And just consider the benefits of having the opportunity to engage in this discussion. I mean: will students solve the Hong Kong/Mainland China issue? Probably not, but

at least we have a space where we can discuss it. Personally, I’ve learned about both sides of this argument to the point where I feel a little more comfortable about asking for a job at the United Nations some day.

And the matter of whether students will feel uncomfortable accessing counselling for this particular reason deserves some scrutiny as well. As someone who has accessed counselling on campus before, my biggest concern was that the whole building is placed inside the busiest food court on campus. As an aside, fellas, it’s normal to get counselling, and it’s also normal to talk to your mates if you’re not okay. But surely someone has realised that when we are at our most vulnerable and in need of assistance, a little discretion might be desired? If a student has made it far enough to actually reach the building, despite the potential for a stray classmate to see you from the food court, I feel pretty confident that a bit of a protest isn’t going to stop them. However, in this instance, the Director of Student Affairs made the decision, whether we like it or not.

And if the problem is that the provision of Student Services is incompatible with student demonstrations, then why is it the responsibility of the demonstrators to move away? This space has stood for sixty years as a testament to the benefits of student autonomy. Every year, over 600 students are elected to executive positions by the members of 200+ clubs. Each of those students begins a new chapter in their lives as the head of their own project run almost entirely out of this complex. Every food outlet in the building is the result of hard negotiating work by successive union execs. The Schonell Theatre, as has been a rallying cry for most of this year, was built with student money to protect art on campus. All of these are the result of students being given free rein to work on their own ideas without input from the University. Not an inch should be sacrificed if Student Services can move instead.

All of this is important because the entire Union Complex could potentially be demolished and rebuilt. And soon. Despite the University lauding the oodles of facilities and extra servings of functionality in the rebuild, the truth is that the new space tips the scales balancing autonomous student hotspot against administration-run student services even further in favour of the latter.

The University even reports that the new building will add more teaching and learning space. But if we barely have the freedom to passionately discuss issues in a service-oriented space, what hope do we have when noise complaints come in from angry lecturers?

Will students even feel as though the new complex is culturally ‘theirs’?

In my mind, the solution to all this is simple. Student Services should move out of the Union Complex. Counselling can be offered anywhere on campus, but few places offer the unique, rich experience of a fully autonomous student operation. And if the Union Complex ever is demolished and rebuilt, it should be to give the student union every nook and cranny of the space available in the new development. In my opinion, the best method for preventing mental health problems on campus is to allow students the time and space to find purpose in life -- and they don’t find that when the Director of Student Affairs can step in at any moment to wave some rules around.

UQ won’t rule out large banners saying “OBEY” and “CONSUME” in new hub ROWAN EVANS - Chief Editor In the course of writing the previous article, I felt that it would be best to give one Andrew Lee, the Director of Student Affairs, the chance to speak for himself on the matters I was discussing. After all, I really didn’t want the man to come off as a shadowy figure who achieves his will with the snap of his fingers, and holds student democracy at his beck and call.

So, as any good journalist does, I called his office and explained that I had some questions for him.

He asked me to email them to him, and so I set to writing them down.

Being in one of my moods, I inserted some playful questions that should have been easy for him to answer.

After, I waited for Andrew to dispel the myth that he was a man who operates in secret. Surely, he would engage in my lofty philosophical questions, and knock my playful, easy questions out of the park.

When I instead got a response from the Office of Marketing and Communications, I decided to print this entire exchange verbatim.

As you know, on Friday, Hong Kong students called for messages of support to be posted on the Student Services building. They were asked to move away from the Student Services building on the grounds that they may make people uncomfortable.

In the week after the Christchurch shooting this year, UQ Life asked for messages of support for the Muslim community directly in front of the Student Services building.* Do you regret this decision?

Do you think that moving Friday’s protest was appropriate, given that the space is a forum area intended for student demonstrations?

Do you think that students generally feel comfortable approaching mental health counsellors in one of the most populated areas on campus?

Have you ever considered moving student services to an entirely different location on campus?

Do you think that the student hub project will empower or dampen the ability to protest in the student forum area?

The student hub webpage includes a demo picture saying “Graduations 2022” on one of the buildings.

Should this be taken to mean that students might actually have a say in how their graduations are run and who gets to speak, rather than the current purple-filled affairs with speeches from administrators

I should clarify that the reason I asked this question was because we all know that the Christchurch shooting was awful. It presents no learning opportunity to anybody, and it’s safe ground for the University to allow a demonstration on.

President’s Report What a fortnight to be President of the University of Queensland Student Union.

I’ve so far resisted saying anything too provocative online or in the media, for fear of catastrophising recent events. I’ve held my tongue in public, while in private voicing my serious concerns to members of the UQ administration about the fallout of the last fortnight of protests. I even kept a straight face when a senior UQ staff member implored the Union to host a ‘Diversity BBQ’ after a video of a violent clash between protestors went viral on international media. However, after the events of Friday 2 August, I am putting my views on the record. I do so not as a free speech warrior, a CCP shill, a coward who refuses to support democracy, or a pro-Hong Kong President, though I’ve been given all of those titles in recent weeks. I do so as a President deeply concerned about the University’s behaviour toward its students.

Let me begin when last Friday afternoon, a group of Hong Kong students began to put up a Lennon Wall on the side of the Student Services building. They wanted a peaceful show of support for their loved ones living through intense political unrest back home. Their friends, University students my age, are being arrested and/or are facing violence as they struggle for democracy in an increasingly violent context.

UQ’s response to the Lennon Wall? To ask the students to move it off the Student Services building because it might make some students ‘uncomfortable’. Luckily, a UQ Union wall (just five metres away and totally within sight of the Student Services building) was available and the Hong Kongers moved their protest. A few hours later, a group of Chinese students approached me and asked for permission to set up their own wall in response. I welcomed their idea and the Chinese wall is now perfectly visible beside Mr Beans.

The University’s response to the peaceful installation disturbed me. How thoroughly sanitised has the UQ experience become? When did it become more important for students to be ‘comfortable’ rather than exchange ideas about democracy, free speech and human rights at a University? In fact, the area UQ feared could create an less-than-comfortable experience for students sits behind a plaque declaring the space a ‘student forum’. God forbid passionate young people contest ideas there.

While the Hong Kong students moved their installation, I observed the mural to the right of Student Services’ newly declared Comfort Zone. Uncle Sam Watson, descendant of the Birri Gubba tribe, painted the mural during his time as a UQ student in the 1970s. One weekend, someone drew the letters KKK in distinct white paint over the mural, and in defiance, Uncle Sam left the writing there as testimony of white attitudes toward Indigenous Australians. He then painted Aboriginal men holding AK47s and bullets, sending a clear message: we

Like it or not, UQ is a political centre in Queensland. The last few weeks have shown why it matters for the Student Union to give a strident left-wing lead on social questions.

Student Action is proud to have raised and passed two motions affirming the UQ Union’s support for the struggle for democracy in Hong Kong, and the right to freedom of expression on campus.

We firmly believe that to win a better world, unions need to struggle to break down the divisions of race and nationality which keep oppressed people apart. The left has to wage and

I imagine a few Aboriginal students over the years have felt uncomfortable at the giant KKK emblazoned over a mural depicting their culture. I even think a few white Australians feel uncomfortable at the scenes depicted in the mural, like white nurses stealing babies from Aboriginal mothers and white soldiers shooting Aboriginal men with bayonets. Should we paint over this mural in consideration of the comfort of all parties?

On the Tuesday prior to the HK installation, I had faced immense pressure to publicly support the University’s decision to move protestors to a ‘free speech zone’, for their scheduled protest on Wednesday 31 July. The student protestors had been relegated to Forgan Smith Lawns, which conveniently has significantly less foot traffic than the Great Court.

I refused to let the Student Union become a mouthpiece for the University’s ill-thought out ideas. Not only do I disagree with the idea that free speech can only be exercised in carefully measured boundaries of the University campus, I hadn’t been consulted on the initial idea of moving protests. Had I been asked for my views on the move, rather than received demands to support a ‘free speech zone’, I would have advised the University that asking anti-establishment protestors to move locations would only have drawn the ire of said protestors. It would have encouraged them to protest in whatever location the University (or Union puppet) didn’t want protests to occur.

Lo and behold, the students rejected the Forgan Smith Lawns and assembled on the Great Court.

So what is the role of the student union in times such as now?

I like to think that we’re a (mostly) reasonable voice that advocates for students regarding decisions made by the University.

University executives can call the Union unrepresentative (before asking us to represent their views on Stalkerspace), or they can call our organisation pitiful when we dare to question the status quo. We will continue to truthfully represent the views of the student body. That truth is great and mighty above all things. We will host student meetings in theatres you wanted to bulldoze, and we will support vibrant debate of academia, UQ history and student autonomy. We will lend our walls to the display of peaceful protest, and we will acknowledge the defiant political perseverance that our students are capable of.

We will represent the truth, in all of its might.

If you’re feeling despondent about the state of protest and political debate at UQ, take comfort in the Vice-Chancellor’s words earlier this year - you don’t have to be within the walls of the Schonell to criticise him! Last week showed that students are free to do so on the Great Court. They’ll just be acting in contradiction to UQ’s explicit demands, surrounded by dozens of riot guards, and a police helicopter.

PRIYA DE (Union Councillor) win the argument: no matter where you come from, it is the rich and powerful who carry out injustice in society, and we should stand together in our diversity to fight them.

It is in this spirit that we are equally proud to oppose the anti-Chinese racism and Australian nationalism that has proliferated on campus, from both left liberals and the far right. We defy those who have launched an unparalleled slander campaign against our activists to smear this position.

Principles matter: sometimes you have to be in a minority, and argue what is right.

Opposition Leader’s Report Welcome back to Semester 2, 2019! Hopefully over the break you managed to catch some time off to rest and recalibrate before returning to study.

My name is Tori and I’m from Momentum. Momentum is a team of progressive students from diverse backgrounds, making up just over a third of UQ Union Council.

Momentum spent the first half of this year standing up for students, holding the union to account and fighting to get the most for you out of university life, and this semester we will continue that work. We believe that the student union can and should be doing more to support students when they need help.

We encourage you to come along to our monthly union council meetings, so you can see how UQ Union works for yourself.

Second semester is always the time when life on campus starts to really buzz – Balls and Galas taking place, graduations for those who are leaving, and finally the lead in to Christ-

I have always believed in building towards a society that moves beyond scarcity and hierarchy, toward a world that reharmonizes human communities with the natural world, while celebrating diversity, creativity and freedom, the right to free speech and assembly, and the right to self-determination. As a committeed anti-nationalist, and as someone with a strong history of opposing both right and left wing reactionary politics, I am humbled to support not only the Hong Kong students at the our university fighting for democratic rights but also proud to have the opportunity to stand in solidarity with all peoples oppressed by authoritarian regimes. Unfortunately, after a violent mob formed last week to target peaceful student protesters, the university administration has decided to take a stance of not only issuing limp-wristed statements that do not assign blame to the perpetrators of this aggression, but go as far as theating the enrolment of students who stand up for their rights to free speech and free assembly.

This postion, as contrary as it is to not only democratic rights but the most basic interests of students, must be stringently critiqued with a specific focus to the governmental interference and corporatisation of academia that are undermining the ability of the university to exist as a respectable and independent institution. Anything from giving physical space to the propaganda arms of authoritarian regimes, right through to the establishment of academically dubious institutions to promote “Western Civilisation” are primarily driven by economic interest, first and foremost. It is difficult to make an argument about how the student body is served by the university granting adjunct professorships to visiting foreign diplomats from brutal dictatorships, who have been willing to state their support for attacks by a violent mob against peaceful student protesters as being nothing more than legitimate expressions of “spontaneous patriotic behaviour”. By refusing to appropriately deal with this issue the administration has made it abundantly clear they are not capable of defending academic integrity and student rights on campus, and thus it is up to the student body ourselves to do what we can to hold the university accountable by demanding transparency in their dealings with such hostile actors.

I have been here a long time. Too long, by my own account.

And yet, I believe this is the most non-partisan issue to have existed on campus in at least the past decade. This is not a left wing or a right wing issue: as Adorno stated, the need to let suffering

Semester 2 also brings with it the annual student elections, with voting to elect Academic Board members taking place from this month, and UQ Senate and UQ Union elections to follow in September and October respectively. With this in mind, now is the time to start thinking about what you want to see more of from the University and UQ Union.

Momentum has been leading the charge in the fight to end sexual assault on campus here at UQ. On August 21, there will be a National Day of Action to end sexual assault on campus.

To support this, we will be having a rally outside the UQ Union complex from 11am - 1pm on the day. By joining in this protest you can stand in solidarity with thousands of other students across Australia who are fighting to end sexual violence on universities.

Hopefully you can make it along!

CAMPBELL RAY (Union Councillor) speak is a condition of all truth, and so we must stand together as one, so that those who follow us can even contemplate being able to stand against tyranny at all. Regardless of our political perspective, all students have an inherent interest in ensuring student activism is not corraled into dead patches of lawn well away from spaces where we may gain public interest or attention, as the university has demanded. The right of students to meet and speak freely without threat of violence or intimidation must be defended, and it has been extremely heartening to see people from all major and relevant political groups and factions, regardless of our somewhat bitterly contested political differences, unite behind a common cause to defend not only the right of students to peaceful assembly, but to oppose any and all attempts by the powers that be to reduce or even eliminate that right. There will, of course, always be a few hyperbolic and shrill quislings who foster suspicion between campus groups along racial lines in order to undermine any progressive political activism they can’t manipulate to their own advantage, the usual irrelevant champaigne socialists and seething left-wing neoliberals in their vampire castles, willing to suck the blood out of any parades that they can’t jump in front of, any long years of hard work that ain’t theirs. But on the whole, the willingness of students to work across party lines to defend not only international students but to work together in common cause for the rights of everybody is easily the most amazing thing I have seen in student activism.

See also: who thought it was a good idea to waste a hundred thousand dollars on a mInDfUlNeSs sEsSiOn? That’s 400k packets of mi goreng, a week of delicious monosodium-glutamate laden dinners for every single student. Maybe the university administration is even more disconnected than we previously thought?

As for me, I’ve completed my master’s degree, so I’m heading off in a few months to build greenhouses elsewhere, at least until I inevitably end up in a ditch after being assassinated by maoist, islamist or fascist guerillas: do not worry, I understand there is already a betting pool! My heart will be remembered when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits, at any rate.

I would-a say this, however! You often find-a the thing you looking for if you go backa to the last place you had it. That is one thing I learned when I lost-a my fish nets many years ago. You can imagine what a stronzo I felt like when I was halfway out on the Mediterranean realising I didn’t have what to pull in the pesce with! But on-a that day, I went-a back to where I remember last having the nets (back on-a the dry land, you see) It’s a lotta like that-a how-you-say Bo Peepa di Poca... uhh... “Little Bo Peep”! What did she do when she lost-a her sheep? She hadda to “leave them alone, and they willa come home”.

What I’mma tryna say to you is that, maybe, if all-a you students putta down-a you placards, and maybe you go backa to class and-a you university goes back to being a Top 50 World-Class Institution, you Vice-Chancellor mighta turn up again. Justa think about that!
