Hal Hannaford chosen as new headmaster

Hal HANNAFORD appointed new HEADMASTER

Selwyn House School Board of Directors announced on January 8 that Hal Hannaford has been chosen to become the school’s new headmaster. Mr. Hannaford will succeed Will Mitchell, effective January 1, 2009.

For the past 11 years, Mr. Hannaford has been headmaster of Royal St. George’s College (Grades 3-12) in Toronto. Before that, he was headmaster of Kingsway College School, an elementary school also in Toronto, from 1989 to 1996.

Ted Claxton ’73, Chairman of the Selwyn House Association Board of Directors, has the following to say about Mr. Hannaford: “Under his leadership, Royal St. George’s College, one of the country’s premier independent schools for

boys, with an enrolment of 440 students, has {significantly enhanced its academic standards with 85 per cent of its graduating class receiving Ontario Scholar Certificates. Keys to its success have been the recruitment of firstrate administrators and faculty and the strengthening of the school’s financial position. During his tenure, Royal St. George’s College has benefited from an $8-million capital program, and annual giving has grown from $90,000 to $600,000.

“In addition to his experience and his impressive track record, Mr. Hannaford brings to Selwyn House a deep commitment to boys’ education and to the principles underlying Selwyn House’s existing mission and values; a sensitivity to Quebec and a commitment not only to enhancing our French-language programs but to graduating students who are both bilingual and bicultural; a proven capacity to attract and retain the best faculty; strong communications skills; and management experience.”

Mr. Hannaford is a graduate of Lower Canada College, has an MBA from INSEAD, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University and previously attended Queen’s University.

Hal and and his wife, Susan, are both native Montrealers. They have two children, Alisse and Reid.
